Myant to Demonstrate Connected Textiles for Fitness and Cycling at CES 2020 that Enable New Modes of Textile-Based Performance Optimization – PR Web

The quantification of performance has become a critical aspect of training and performance optimization for athletes, who have relied on performance quantification technologies to fine tune their performance, understand how to push harder, and when to pull back to avoid injury.

TORONTO (PRWEB) January 10, 2020

Myant Inc., pioneers in Textile Computing, will be exhibiting at CES 2020 in Las Vegas and showcasing a system of connected performance apparel (including a pair of connected cycling shorts) designed to augment fitness experiences, connecting athletes to their bodies, their training partners and coaches. Connected fitness represents just one facet of a life connected through textile that Myant is creating. These garments along with other connected textile form factors are poised to change the way people across society work, care for each other, and play.

The quantification of performance has become a critical aspect of training and performance optimization for athletes, and for cyclists in particular who have relied on performance quantification technologies to fine tune their performance, understand how to push harder, and when to pull back to avoid injury. The objective quantification of performance also serves as a motivational tool, helping to demonstrate progress over time and versus the competition. While many such tools exist, the individual measurement tools are often difficult to swap between bikes and the data generated from various tools are locked in their own platforms making it difficult to obtain a holistic view of performance.

Recognizing these challenges, Myant has been applying their expertise in textiles that can sense and react to the human body and is developing a line of fitness & performance apparel that consolidates numerous performance measurement tools into a single textile-based measurement platform. Different textile form factors (e.g. sports bra, underwear, sweat band, compression tights, etc.) all will have the ability to contribute data towards building a holistic picture of your performance and provide deeper context and understanding on how your broader life off the field (i.e. your sleep, your daily activity, etc.) is impacting your performance on the field. One such garment in development is a pair of connected cycling shorts with EMG sensors knitted directly into the textile which in combination with data captured by other connected garments (such as the connected athletic shoe or ECG shirt) enables access to a variety of performance metrics like fatigue, power output and blood/muscle oxygenation.

Other potential capabilities that can be integrated into fitness & performance apparel include posture detection and haptic feedback to correct form, heart rate via continuous ECG monitoring, respiration monitoring, blood pressure tracking, electrolyte-level monitoring via sweat sensing, activity tracking, electronically-controlled moisture management, and more. The cycling shorts and other fitness & performance interfaces will be on display in Myants booth at CES 2020, happening January 7th to 10th in Las Vegas.

The data generated by these textile-based sensors will be fed to the Myant Platform which aggregates these different data types to provide a single holistic view of your fitness & performance. Using machine learning on the Myant Platform, users will also be able to identify and predict performance issues, unlocking a new level of optimization. The insights derived from this data can be shared back to the athlete but also shared with training partners and coaches to augment the training experience. Training partners can share their data via apps connected to the Myant Platform, providing the social motivation to improve and push through.

The optimization of performance through connected textiles is just one of the many possibilities enabled by the Myant Platform, which provides a continuous and ambient connection between people and their bodies, their communities, and their environments across all aspects of daily life (i.e. home, work, and play). Myants presence at CES 2020 was designed to encourage others envision these possibilities, inspiring the world to challenge the way they see everyday textile and to reimagine the value that these objects can provide. Myant invites you to visit their booth at CES 2020 (Booth #43925, Sands Expo, Health & Wellness) to discover more about a world connected by textile.

The Best Fitness Tech Innovations of CES 2020 – gearpatrol.com

The biggest show in consumer tech is on right now. Catch up on our highlights and follow us on Instagram for up-to-the-second coverage!

On the surface, technology and fitness might not seem closely tied, but as the quest to live our best physical lives rolls on, the two worlds become inextricably linked. Nowhere is this connection more apparent than at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where brands unveil their latest efforts to help us get healthier and fitter. Some of the ideas are just fine, some are goofy and some are ahead of their time, but they all combine to move us forward. The following six tripped our sensors, for one reason or another, at this years show.

Its not the first smart helmet to hit the market, but we dig the fact that LIVALLs brain bucket offers a ton of handy tech while looking pretty streamlined and cool. Standout features include front and rear lights activated by built-in gravity acceleration sensors, turn signals controlled via a handlebar remote and walkie-talkie functionality to aid communication when riding with a group.

Weve gotta give NURVV points for creativity here. The brand has embedded 32 precision sensors into a pair of insoles with the goal of helping runners improve their form to go faster and risk less injury. The sensors capture data 1,000 times per second and pair with an app to provide realtime feedback on factors like cadence, step length, footstrike, pronation and balance. At 250 ($327), they are pricy, but who knows? Maybe a big running shoe company will buy the tech and start integrating.

Assuming you can get used to sleeping with a giant headband, this streamlined update to the original Deep Sleep Headband promises to make sleep more restorative by triggering quiet audio tones that boost the quality of slow wave sleep (a.k.a. deep sleep). Theres also an app-paired sleep tracker (of course), and Philips says 80 percent of testers report positive results within two weeks of use. And thats not even including the bonus feature: we cant imagine this thing stirring anyones ardor, so it doubles as birth control!

File GEMS (Gait Enhancing & Motivating System), unveiled in 2019, under ahead of its time. The exoskeleton was designed to provide walking assistance and/or resistance, but Samsung rolled it back out this year as a potential home workout device, complete with a holographic personal trainer. Were not quite ready to strap on this harness, a pair of AR glasses and a Galaxy smartwatch just to do lunges, but it lays the groundwork for more feasible options down the road.

Suunto consistently makes burly and reliable sports watches, but as our own Oren Hartov noted in a story yesterday, the Suunto 7 is a bit of a departure. This watch seeks to blend sports watch functionality (offline maps, 70+ sport modes, GPS tracking) with a more accessible, lifestyle-y aesthetic (customizable faces, interchangeable straps) that wont look out of place with a suit or at least a blazer. So far, so good.

Finally, a Fitbit for dogs!

Steve Mazzucchi is Gear Patrols outdoors and fitness editor. Outside the office, you can find him mountain biking, snowboarding, motorcycling or sipping a dram of Laphroaig and daydreaming about such things.

Stick With It!: Hoover Resident Finds Her Passion in Fitness – Over the Mountain Journal

Ashley Dawsons bootcamp can look intimidating from the outside, but she said all are welcome. It doesnt matter what your fitness level is. She just makes sure everyone is doing their best. Journal photo by Ingrid Schnader.

By Ingrid Schnader

When people make a New Years resolution to exercise more, it doesnt take long before life gets in the way and they start coming up with excuses.

But in Ashley Dawsons fitness bootcamp, its hard to come up with an excuse.

She meets her fitness group on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Heardmont Park at 8:30 a.m., just in time for parents to drop their kids off at school and head her way. She also doesnt have any monthly commitments or cancelation fees.

Life happens; kids get sick, you get sick, she said. Other programs charge you if you show or dont show. But my people are so loyal, and they give me a heads up. So, I think that, too, helps them get out there, knowing that Im depending on them to be there.

Her bootcamp is an hour of cardio, core and weights. But until about 10 years ago, a workout like this was totally out of her comfort zone.

I was always at the gyms muscle works, step aerobics, spin class, she said.

Then her friend invited her to an outdoor lunchtime bootcamp. Being a gym rat, she had always done her exercises inside, but she instantly loved being outdoors.

Theres no mirrors, theres no heat or air conditioning, she said. Youre outside in nature. It sounds cliche, but its just a little bit more of an experience.

She started attending the bootcamp classes more and more, and she became a source of encouragement for the other people in the class.

It got to the point where people in the class were texting, calling, saying, Are you going to be there tomorrow? When youre there, youre so encouraging, she said.

She decided to pursue her teaching certification and started her own fitness bootcamp.

Motivation and Ministry

Even though its been about 10 years since she started Ashley Dawson Fitness, she said she never gets bored of her workouts.

Her classes are never the same. Shes always trying new things and seeing how her clients respond to different workouts. People never know what to expect when they meet her at Heardmont Park; theres an element of surprise.

The bootcamp meets rain or shine, freezing or sweltering. Dawson said shes surprised by how motivated and loyal her clients have been in all types of weather.

If its raining, theyll work out underneath the bleachers so that their mats and weights dont get too wet. They only move inside if its pouring rain.

But if its freezing, they dont care, she said. Were out there when its 100 degrees. I try to say below 30 is my limit, because my hands are cold and freezing. And theyll be like, Its 33 and sunny, we can do this!

The level of motivation she sees in her fitness group helps her stay motivated, too, she said.

Having determined, dedicated people come out there totally gets me excited and more passionate for it, she said. Theres such camaraderie. Everyone is so kind and encouraging.

Dawson said she believes that God put each one of her teammates in her life for a reason. Every morning as she drives to class, she prays for each one of them.

This is like my ministry, if that makes sense, she said. Ive had clients who lost their spouses. I have clients going through horrible marriages, divorces, battles with children. And a lot of people around them dont know that. But as a group, even though its a hard workout, its such a comfort zone to be in and workout in.

She recently had a text from one of her clients that she had been suffering from postpartum depression, and Dawson hadnt even realized it.

She talked about how shed gone into a real dark place and then found my class and my friendship, Dawson said. She was like, You and your class helped me get through something. I was like, Oh, thank you, Lord.

Her class can look intimidating from the outside, but Dawson said all are welcome. It doesnt matter what your fitness level is. She just makes sure everyone is doing their best.

Its a family, but it is one that welcomes, she said. I dont want anyone to think, I cant go out there because I dont know that group.

For those who have fitness goals in their New Years resolutions, Dawson has a simple piece of advice: stick with it.

Dont set the goal too high so that you dont let yourself down or disappoint yourself, she said. Whatever your goal is, get it on the calendar and check it off. Make sure you do it.

You can take a peek at some of Dawsons workouts by following her at ad___fitness on Instagram.

CES 2020: Best of Health and Fitness – AppleInsider

A market that is continuing to grow, providers of health and fitness devices have used CES 2020 to introduce more items to help people improve their wellbeing. AppleInsider lists off some of the new electronic devices and services that aim to make people stronger and healthier. Withings

After launching the ECG-taking Move smart watch during CES 2019, Withings is launching its newest wrist-worn health device, the ScanWatch.

The ScanWatch is the "world's first clinically validated hybrid smartwatch" that is able to detect AFib as well as sleep apnea.

"ScanWatch is our most ambitious medical tracker and purposely designed to detect the early presence of AFib and sleep apnea - two related issues that are extremely common yet largely undiagnosed, despite their known impact on multiple health conditions," said Mathieu Letombe, CEO of Withings.

Users can take an ECG on demand as well as monitor for AFib in the background using an embedded PPG sensor that continuously monitors hear rate. When an irregular heart rate is detected, it alerts users to take an ECG.

Sleep apnea is detected by way of a SpO2 sensor that monitors the oxygen saturation levels by emitting and absorbing light passed through blood vessels throughout the night. When the oxygen levels are identified to be inadequate, it signifies a breathing disturbance, such as sleep apnea. It also packs traditional sleep tracking such as length, quality, and depth.

ScanWatch will run for 30 days on a single charge and blends a classic analog design with a new PMOLED digital display at the top that is capable of displaying various health data. It also incorporates a new crown dial, similar to Apple Watch.

Withings is targeting a launching during Q2 2020 in both the United States and Europe at $249 for the 38mm version and $299 for the 42mm version, pending CE and FDA approval.

Philips has announced its SmartSleep Deep Sleep Headband 2, a headband designed to provide useful feedback to help the wearer address sleeping issues.

It features soothing sounds to help the user fall asleep, and SmartAlarm, a feature that wakes the user up in the lightest stage of sleep within 5-30 minutes of their alarm. The updated version of the Deep Sleep Headband is smaller and lighter and features bone conduction tones to replace the over-ear speakers.

Philips' SmartSleep Snoring Relief Band trains snore-prone back-sleepers to roll onto their side. Worn around the chest, the Snoring Relief band will vibrate when a wearer is laying on their back for too long, stopping snoring before it begins. According to Philips in-house testing, 85% of wearer's partners reported less snoring and disrupted sleep.

For those who want a better bedside light, Philips' SmartSleep Connected Sleep and Wake-Up Light is designed to help you fall asleep faster and wake up easier.

Before bed, RelaxBreathe uses rhythmic light pulsing to help you wind down and fall asleep faster. Nature sounds or ambient music can help you block out distractions in and around the home. The customizable sunrise alarm helps to wake you up naturally and easily.

For those who are especially heavy sleepers, the PowerWake feature employs flashing lights and loud alarm to rouse you from even the deepest sleep.

The Connected Sleep and Wake-Up Light is Wi-Fi enabled and boasts a multi-level touch display that can be turned off to prevent distractions while falling asleep. Philips reports that 92% of users enjoy the way Wake-Up Light wakes them, and 89% would recommend the light to others.

Colgate has announced a new smart toothbrush capable of detecting biofilm, helping users to target spots they miss when brushing. The Colgate Plaqless Pro features an optic sensor that detects any buildup and provides information to the Colgate Connect app.

It enables users to tell when and where they have missed spots while brushing, or when they can move to a new area. By ensuring biofilm removal, users have a better chance at avoiding cavities, plaque, and gum diseases.

A ring light around the toothbrush allows users to know when and where biofilm has been detected, and the app provides detailed information, data, and tips for optimal oral health.

The Colgate Plaquless Pro smart electric toothbrush has won an award for innovation at CES 2020.

Oral-B also introduced a new toothbrush, the Oral-B IO. This new brush is a smart connected toothbrush that pairs with the corresponding app to help you monitor your brushing progress. It measures several different zones in your mouth to help ensure entire coverage while brushing.

An LED light around the neck of the toothbrush changes color depending on how hard you press while brushing, turning green when applying the correct pressure, blue if too light, and red if too hard.

A built-in display makes it easy to change modes as well as other settings and get feedback post-brushing session.

Oral-B boasts that the IO is also only the second toothbrush to support Apple's HealthKit feature for tracking brushing habits.

Aura has announced preorders of their intelligent Apple Watch band Aura Strap that is able to measure body composition and hydration levels with its integrated sensors.

After being announced last year at CES 2019, Aura Strap is getting ready to launch with a streamlined design. Using its bioimpedence sensor and its accompanying app, users can measure their fat-muscle percentage, hydration levels, and fitness/diet progress.

It transmits data to Apple Watch via "ultrasound interface" and can work six months on a single battery. It is water-resistant and syncs with Apple HealthKit for further analysis.

Currently at launch, only the Coal-colored strap is available though three additional colors will follow. Pre-orders run $99 and will begin delivery in March.

Trojan Fitness Center will open to students on Wednesday – Trojan News Center

The Trojan Fitness Center is set to open to students Wednesday, Jan. 8. (TROY photo/Joey Meredith)

When students return to the classroom on the Troy Campus Wednesday, theyll return to a campus that has the potential to make them healthier.

The new, state-of-the-art recreation and fitness center will be open for business, said Dr. Shane Tatum, Director of Health and Wellness.

When the students return, they can expect a recreation center that is equipped with all the fitness equipment they need, and an environment that is inviting and safe, he said.

Just shy of two years in construction, the 78,000 square-foot Trojan Fitness Center cost about $25 million. It includes a multi-activity court, a basketball court, free and circuit weight training areas, aerobic exercise rooms, an outdoor swimming pool, a multi-level walking track and four offices.

The building was a student-led initiative, and was recommended by the Student Government Association, which also recommended it be paid for through a student recreation fee of $100 per semester ($50 summer). The fee was implemented in 2016, in advance of construction.

The facility, located on the eastern edge of campus on the corner of George Wallace Drive and University Avenue occupies a portion of land where Sartain Hall, the campus former basketball arena, once stood. Parking, and new street connects University Avenue and John M. Long Avenue. Construction also included the removal of traffic signals at the intersection of University Avenue and International Boulevard. The intersection is now controlled with a roundabout.

A formal dedication and ribbon cutting will be announced at a later date.

’90 Day Fianc’: A Fitness Influencer Says Anfisa Nava Is ‘Nothing’ Like She How She Was Portrayed On the Show – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

When Anfisa Nava first appeared on TLCs 90 Day Fianc, many viewers perceived her as a villain. The Russia native was labeled a gold-digger and materialistic because of her desires for a luxury lifestyle. Her fiance and eventual husband, Jorge Nava, didnt exactly help matters. He often accused Anfisa of the same thing.

After Jorge revealed secrets hed kept from both the audience and his wife, though, fan perceptions began to shift. Jorge was eventually sentenced to two and a half years in prison for felony charges related to his cannabis business.

Now, Anfisa lives, works, and goes to school by herself in California. Shes kept mum about whether she and Jorge are still together or not. While she still gets her share of criticism, many 90 Day Fianc fans now support her. Recently, a fellow fitness influencer took to Instagram to claim Anfisa was completely different from her portrayal on the TLC show that made her famous.

Anfisa has always been the target of social media criticism. On the show, many 90 Day Fianc fans believed she was taking advantage of Jorge for money and a green card. Critics also mocked Anfisas sexy outfits and extensive plastic surgery.

However, over time, the tide began to turn. Jorge revealed that he had lied to Anfisa about how much money he had. He also already had a felony on his record, making it hard for the couple to find stable housing. He had lied about his criminal history, too, which led to trust issues with his then-fiancee.

Eventually, Jorge was incarcerated, and Anfisa began to make a life of her own in the U.S.

Now, the 90 Day Fianc star competes in bikini bodybuilding competitions and devotes her social media presence to nutrition, workouts, and diet information. Anfisa recently became a certified personal trainer and hopes to launch her own fitness-related business.

After completing two years at a community college, Anfisa also recently applied to finish a bachelors degree at a four-year university. She hopes to attend the University of California, Irvine.

Still, despite her accomplishments, Anfisa isnt immune to criticism. Some 90 Day Fianc fans have body-shamed Anfisa about her weight, while others think she bares too much skin on social media.

Recently, Anfisas fellow fitness coach, an influencer with the Instagram handle @emilymariadfw, praised the 90 Day Fianc fan on social media. She warned followers not to go off of the personal trainers portrayal on TLC to form their opinions of her.

Last July, I had the opportunity to spend a day with Anfisa in Las Vegas, Emily wrote. This post has been a long time coming but I chose to wait for the right moment.

She continued, The truth about Anfisa is that she is NOTHING like she was erroneously portrayed on @TLC. She is actually a super kind, sweet and caring young woman. She is soft spoken, funny, humble and extremely well mannered.

The influencer also argued that fans dislike of Anfisa might have to do with her gender, as well as language barriers and cultural differences. Because she is a woman, it does appear her confidence, determination, grit and outspoken ways are unduly mistaken for arrogance, she wrote. Remember this: she left her home country with a completely different culture & language to come to the US aka a land that was completely foreign to her.

Emily concluded by calling 90 Day Fianc fans to consider how they would deal with such a stressful situation and how they might be perceived by others. Before you judge her, ask yourself if you even have a passport and have even traveled out of your own state?! she questioned. Have you ever lived somewhere, long term, thousands of miles away where you knew no one, had no family, much less any kind of familiar landmark? I didnt think so.

Anfisa has been open about how online hate has affected her, and she seemed to appreciate the support. Aww thank you so much! So glad we met! Anfisa wrote in response, sharing the post on her Instagram stories.
