Fitness professional offers advice to keep with your New Year’s resolution – WOWT
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - New year, new you.
The start of the decade means people with brand new resolutions are out in force at the gym.
Tony Schuster has been in the fitness industry for a long time and has worked as a trainer at Life Time Fitness for a year now.
He says the new year is the perfect time to kick things off at the gym.
"It's always nice to have that reset button," Schuster said.
Gyms like Life Time Fitness see hundreds of newcomers signing up between December and February.
Unfortunately, keeping them there is a whole other story.
"We see a lot of people come in for like two or three months and then drop off to where they were," Schuster explained.
The trainer estimates half of those who sign up, actually keep on with their fitness goals throughout the year.
"They're motivated right now -- but it's never the extended motivation. They see all of these cool things online about easy quick things to do and that's not necessarily the case," he said. "So you see a lot of people have a lot of energy and motivation to start, they don't see those results right away and then they start coming down."
That long term motivation comes more easily for some like Jeff Olson than others.
"It's been two years now," Olson tells 6 News.
It was his baby girl that kick-started his fitness journey.
"I figured I had to be a dad that lived a long time" Olson explained.
With identical twin girls on the way, motivation might be outpaced by his stay-at-home dad duties. But he's not complaining.
"Living the dream every day," Olson said with a chuckle.
For the rest of us, grabbing a gym buddy and focusing on a long term goal is the key to success.
"Meeting with a fitness professional, going with a group of people. Having a good support system to help them get in and keep them accountable," Schuster said.
Aside from fitness goals, quitting smoking, improving your finances and spending more time with loved ones are other popular resolutions for the new year.

NANTICOKE, Pa. New Years Day is the day people like to set goals and resolutions for the year ahead.
For some people, it was all about being more healthy and starting off 2020 at the gym, and there were plenty of people pumping iron at Nanticoke Fitness Center.
I try to work out a lot throughout the year, but you know, a lot of the times, I have lapses where I stop going. This year is kind of like make sure I stick to a steady schedule, Justin Casey said.
Just to live a healthy lifestyle. Live longer. A lot people have families, so the healthier you are, the more time you'll be able to spend with your family and keep up with the little ones, Mark Malshefski said.
Little ones we spoke to also want to be more active in the new year, including 7-year-old Jackson Griffith of Scranton, who wants to play more baseball.
In addition to making fitness more of a priority in 2020, people we spoke to say they also want to spend less time on their devices.
We want to do more family time, and we hope that everyone can kind of just disconnect this year and do more things together, Alyssa Wintermute of Jessup said.
Southside Bowl in Scranton was also busy on New Years Day. People of all ages were looking to start the year off right by spending more time with family.
To help my mom out more at home and walk my dog more and take her outside more, Isla Gargone, 8-years-old, of Wyoming said.
Beyond these individual goals, people have much broader hopes.
My hope for the country is just, you know, there's a big divide right now," Casey said. "So, I really hope we figure that out this year."
Solve the world hunger, world peace, Jason Saunders of Scranton added.
My hope is that 2020 is better than 2019, Frani Malinoski of Scranton said.

MISHAWAKA, Ind. (WNDU) --- Now that we rang in a New Year, you may be ready to start that New Years resolution.
If fitness is on your agenda for 2020, there are some simple steps you can take to make sure you stick with your goals.
Christina Monroe, the manager at Anytime Fitness in Mishawaka, says its important to begin by creating realistic, attainable fitness goals that work for you.
And once you set those goals, Monroe says you need to start them right away.
If you decide to go to a gym, having a personal trainer will help you keep those goals.
But if a gym isn't for you, there are some simple workouts you can do in the comfort of your home or office.
"There are definitely some body weight exercises you can do at home, said Monroe. Simple squats and lunges or dips using your chair or desk. There's ways to make it assisted so you can hold on to your chair when you're doing squats."
If you start straying from your New Year's fitness goals or stop altogether, Monroe says it's never too late to start them up again.

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) People across the world made New Years resolutions to get into better shape, or just get healthier.
KMVT talked with Nate Silvester, a personal trainer at Golds Gym, about how to keep that goal and live a healthier, happier life.
Typically about March. Most people will make the resolution December, January, and they'll stick with it until about March or so, and we kind of see that taper off a little bit, Silvester said.
He also said it's all about perspective, when setting those fitness goals.
Breaking down your goals into monthly, weekly and daily goals would help you better track the progress you're making, Silvester said. "You take it day by and you say like you said, 'I'm going to go to the gym today,' and 'Im going to do resistance training for 45 minutes and then cardio for 30 minutes.' And if you can accomplish that goal daily, consistently over the course of weeks and months that will definitely help you reach that yearly goal.
It comes down to healthy eating and moderation.
It's important to preplan your meals and prep those meals in advance. Because when you do that, you know exactly the amount of calories and the amount of nutrients that are in those meals, Silvester said.
Silvester suggests being patient.
You see people, they'll have a weak moment. And they say, Well, I ruined it, you know, I ate this and now I feel guilty, and I ruined my progress, so I'm going to keep bingeing and keep indulging,'" he said. "You're going to have those little moments of failure, little setbacks. It's going to happen, it happens to everybody. So it's important to say OK, I did that, but now I'm going to get back on track, I'm going to stick with my healthy habits, or get back into my healthy habits.'"

According to a 2015 Nielsen survey, the most common New Years Resolution is losing weight/getting in shape.
Since the biggest gym in La Jolla history just opened a couple of weeks ago with more square feet than an average Whole Foods we asked Life Time Fitness, and the nine other cardio and strength-training facilities in town, for their advice on how to shed holiday pounds.

There are many ways to lose weight, but the most effective approach is a combination of healthy nutrition and consistent exercise. River Trails Park District (RTDP) is giving the community a free Fitness Week with three days of free fitness classes from Thursday, Jan. 2 through Saturday, Jan. 4. RTDP is offering classes by experienced instructors to help community members reach their fitness goals such as managing stress, losing weight or living a healthier lifestyle.
On Thursday, Jan. 2 classes include yoga express at 8 a.m., gentle exercise at 9 a.m., We Fit U at 10:30 a.m., Tai Chi at 4:45 p.m. and cardio kettle strength at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3 classes include core conditioning at 8 a.m., Barre Fusion at 9:15 a.m. and We Fit U at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4 classes include interval mix at 8 a.m. and yoga at 9:30 a.m.

New Year fitness resolutions helping local gyms – WVNS-TV

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) Once the clock strikes midnight on Tuesday, it may be hard to get a spot on the treadmill at local gyms like the YMCA of Southern West Virginia because lets face itgetting in shape often makes its way to the top of new year resolution lists.
Director of Health and Wellness, Megan Clackler, sees it first hand every year.
Getting in shape and dieting are always at the top of the list! Clackler said. Which is good for us, we get a lot of new members and an influx of new people and old people coming back trying to get healthy for the new year.
Its the most wonderful time of the year for the Y financially speaking since they notice members cancelling or not coming as often during the holidays.
Its a huge benefit to us, Clackler added. Throughout the fall and winter months we tend to have some drop off in memberships so this is the biggest time of the year we get excited about it every year.
For many its time to shed some holiday bloatfor others its about becoming strong. Regardless of what your intentions in the gym are for 2020, dont rush the process and risk injury or even disappointment.
