Planet Fitness to open at The Loop pending city approval – Eagle-Tribune

METHUEN The city could see its second Planet Fitness location open in 2020, this one spanning nearly 21,000 square feet at The Loop.

Plans submitted by the fitness franchise will be reviewed and possibly approved by the Community Development Board on Jan. 8, according to Economic and Community Development Director Bill Buckley.

The nearest Planet Fitness location is just over a mile away, on Jackson Street, according to the Planet Fitness website. Other area locations are in Haverhill and Andover, as well as over the New Hampshire border in Plaistow, Salem and Derry.

Pendingboard approval, the gymwill move into space occupied by Motherhood Maternity and an abutting vacant space that once housed Dress Barn, Buckley said.

Motherhood Maternity locations across the country areclosingfollowing an announcement that the company filed for bankruptcy earlier this year. The last day the Methuen store will be in business is Dec. 26, a salesperson said.

Moving into that space would make Planet Fitness neighbors with Orange Theory Fitness, which offers instructor-ledfitnessclasses.

The recent coming and going of businesses at The Loop follows years of unchanged storefronts. Before Motherhood Maternity, two other departureswere announced this year.

Stop and Shop officials said in October that theywould not renew their lease at The Loop due to unmet financial expectations. Their 20-year run in that spot will end in July 2020.

Nearby Starbucks, which hasbeennext to the AMC Theater for two decades, will vacate its current space after breaking ground on a roughly 2,600-square-foot building that includes a drive-thru.It began to take shapein a section of parking lot across from Stop and Shop in November.

It is unclear still what willtake over those two storefronts.

Just remember to take time to rest and recharge. Make sure to take care of YOU. Weve gathered some practical tips from our trainers to help you stay fit while being festive.

Personal TrainerMerrick Larsonadvises using the 10-minute rule: If you get a craving for something sweet, wait 10 minutes before eating it. Chances are, that craving will pass and you won't even want it anymore! BUT, if the 10 minutes go by and you still realllllyyy want that treat, then go ahead and enjoy it! These are all habits of a healthy relationship with food, and the holidays are a great time to put these habits into practice.

TrainerTyler Hambergsuggests finding different ways to enjoy holiday camaraderie: "The holidays are a time for food, friends and family, so why not train with a friend, too? Then, when it is time to sit back and enjoy a meal together, try making your dishes homemade to avoid eating processed foods, which can be full of excess salt and sugar. It may take extra time, but the friendly company makes it something to look forward to!

Personal TrainerKristine Tannernotes planning can be key: When it comes to getting in a workout, try to schedule and plan them ahead of time. And take some time out for fun! "This is a happy and fun time of year, so remember to always relax and make time to HANG with family and friends!

Eat until you are satisfied, not stuffed, Personal TrainerStevie Levandoskirecommends. No one likes that sluggish, stuffed feeling after any meal. Take your time and enjoy your food, eat slowly, and check your fullness levels while youre eating. Remember, there are always leftovers!"

Former boxers Pavlik and Lyell create fitness and boxing training app – WKBN.com

Kelly Pavlik and Billy Lyell created the app the Sweet Science + over the summer

by: Jennifer Rodriguez

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) Two former boxers have created a mobile app to help others with fitness and boxing training.

Kelly Pavlik and Billy Lyell created the app The Sweet Science + over the summer. The app is designed to train users in everyday fitness workouts.

Download the app for Apple products here

Youre gonna learn great fundamentals of boxing by getting the app and youre also gonna get the best full-body workout of any app out there, Lyell said.

He and Pavlik were both professional boxers from the area. Now they dont fight in the ring anymore but want to give back to the sport by teaching others.

Billy was a former world title challenger, I was a former three-time world champion. So you have guys that have been to the top, that really know about boxing but also put in and implement a workout program like a professional boxer, thats gonna make it great, Pavlik said.

Theres a portion where Kelly explains the exercises, hell explain the boxing techniques and the skills they learn and then Ill demonstrate them. So you get the actual explanation and then if you want video footage, I actually show how to do all of the exercises, Lyell said.

The app is available on Apple IOS. Although boxing is a key focus on the app, it is designed to do much more.

This is just not a boxing, boxing or for people who wanna box, its for anybody who wants to get in shape and learn at the same time. Thats the best part about it. Youre really learning real boxing combinations along with getting in great shape, Pavlik said.

The app also includes a nutrition plan to help with diet and meal planning. It allows you to enter personal information like weight and age, then it creates a customized meal plan. It gives you three meals a day and two snacks, with a list of ingredients and grocery list for the week.

We wanted to include everybody from a 50, 60, 70-year-old man that never boxed but was always interested to the 20-year-old female in college or 30-year-old stay-at-home mom, Lyell said.

The app is free to download, then there is a fee of $15 a month for the full workout sessions and $20 a month for the workout sessions and nutrition plan.

Both Pavlik and Lyell said being former professional boxers themselves, they wish they would have had an app like this available to help them train.

Expert: A big fitness center is realistic – Clinton Herald

DEWITT DeWitt is a compelling potential location for a state of the art fitness and wellness care facility, an expert told officials last week.

During a joint meeting of the DeWitt City Council and the Central DeWitt Community School Board, Donna Jarmusz, the president of IBIS Enterprises, relayed the results of a comprehensive market analysis of the area encompassing a 20-mile radius around DeWitt.

Its true: State of the art is a relative term. DeWitt can hold off on that application to host the next Summer Olympics. But if one studies the demographics, a large and dynamic facility is not tilting at windmills, Jarmusz said.

If it were to ever become a reality, it would be quite a draw for your community, Jarmusz said during a subsequent phone interview.

This comes from the leader of a company that has gone a perfect 26-of-26 in accurately predicting the behavior of the markets where freestanding fitness and wellness centers were built.

Whenever I go and speak before prospective clients, someone will say, You have all these fabulous projects on your website; tell us about the ones that have failed, she said. And I say, None, zero. And thats how we want to keep it. Were very proud of that, and we want all sides to win.

As it stands now, IBIS does not have a vested interest in seeing the project go forward. Although IBIS sometimes is asked to provide consulting for fundraising campaigns in relation to these projects, she said her only job right now is to present the unvarnished truth.

The city and the school district have dovetailing interests to enhance the areas fitness and wellness opportunities, particularly during the winter months. Meanwhile, IBIS has had numerous discussions with Genesis Health System and Rock Valley Personal Training, who are extremely interested in being involved in the project. She said it is far too early to discuss what that involvement might look like for Genesis and Rock Valley.

Its hard to make any kind of decisions when you dont know when and if this is going to be a real project, she said.

The initial vision presented to the city and the school board is one that incorporates the wish lists of nearly 40 local residents who were interviewed in depth by IBIS employees.

The initial conceptual drawings call for a 127,520-square-foot facility. In the drawings, 62,080 square feet of the facility would be dedicated to an air structure that would accommodate amenities such as a 200-meter, six-lane indoor track, a full-sized basketball court, an open turf area, spectator seating, pickleball courts and batting cages for baseball and softball.

The other half of the conceptual drawing was allotted 65,440 square feet to accommodate amenities such as multi-purpose areas lined with quality fitness equipment, a lap/competition pool, open fitness areas, racquetball court, a kids area, conference rooms with a teaching/demonstration kitchen, and clinical and physical therapy spaces and support areas.

The initial price tag for all those amenities was estimated at $25.34 million. By slightly downsizing the size of the pool and the air structure, IBIS found nearly $2 million in potential savings.

The new total of $23.37 million includes operational and marketing costs as well as the cost of purchasing high-top-notch fitness equipment. At this point, there is no formal plan to pursue a new facility. The city and the school district have not discussed any plans on how, theoretically, each entity would fund half the cost of any such project.

We did the business plan in two phases, Jarmusz said. At the end of Phase 1, we asked people for their feedback, and the consensus of the city council and school district was, You know, the numbers are real high. We want all these things; dont get us wrong. But is there a way to look at it and and trim some things? So thats how, thats why we looked for some savings.

That also isnt to say that some of the other amenities eventually could not be downsized or eliminated to lower the potential cost further.

This is just the starting point, Jarmusz said.

At modest membership prices $45 for one person, $95 for a family the center eventually would need to attract a total of 1,611 members, according to the conceptual vision presented last week. Jarmusz said that 1,611-membership level is the difference between being a money-losing or revenue-generating facility within five years.

No one gets near (that target number of memberships) on Day 1, she said. Regardless of wherever the facility is located, its always a membership ramp-up. When you open the doors, you are not going to have 1,500 or 1,600 members right away. Its going to happen over time; some people are going to wait.

That membership threshold is based on conservative estimates based on the demographic pool. In virtually all cases in the past, the actual number of members surpasses the conservative-based threshold. Jarmusz said its not a big leap of faith to imagine steadily increasing membership numbers amid many of the new activities and programs that would be possible.

(The current center) already has 1,000 members, but its much better to come from a conservative perspective, she said. I always tell people, You cant over-project, you cant over-design and you cant over-build, or youre setting yourself up for failure, right from the beginning.

What the DeWitt area may lack in terms of population density, it makes up for with an impressive spirit of collaboration, Jarmusz said.

Most of the partnerships that we have developed have been in urban, more-densely populated areas, she said. What I think is unique about DeWitt, and this is my perspective as an outsider, is that (city officials) have used the partnership model very well. Its amazing for a town of that size, with 6 or 7,000 people to be able to have gotten all that accomplished with the fine-arts center, and they were able to get the community behind renovating all of the schools, and now the library.

John Ondrush Golf and Fitness Academy – Blog – The Island Now

In this age of specialization, its no surprise that golf fitness academies are thriving. As Victor Castro, an Ondrush golf fitness trainer told me we give the golfer the essential ability to swing the golf club properly. It takes more than swing mechanics to play good golf. It takes a body that is flexible, mobile and strong.Of course, this was preaching to the choir. I have been trained by John Ondrushs team for years and they are largely the reason I still play competitively in my club championship despite being 72 years old.

I visited Ondrushs new facility this weekend to check out the place and to meet Joe Trentacosta who is Johns new partner. This academy is located on Stewart Avenue in Garden City, right behind the McDonalds and just south of the Roosevelt Shopping Mall. When I walked in, the first thing I noticed was Lee Ferrucci launching drivers in one of the three state-of-the-art AboutGolf Simulators.

We chatted and he explained to me that he was preparing for a tournament in the Bahamas and that this academy was very conveniently located for the Garden City and mid-Nassau County residents.

This new facility was opened on December 1st and is equipped with three golf simulators, a putting green, golf-related fitness equipment, K-Motion 3D motion vests, three Keiser air pressure cable machines, two Titleist Performance Institute golf trainers (Victor Castro and Chris Ammarati) and soon they will have a club fitting section run by Club Champion the leading golf club fitters in America. In addition, there is a running track and a large well-ventilated work out area. Welcome to the future of golf.I asked Victor Castro about the type of players he works with and he told me he works with serious golfers who want to maximize performance and also with beginners who want to start out in golf with correct training.

They also work with golfers who are rehabilitating from injury and they occupy the same space as professional physical therapy so they work closely with them. Joe told me that a core group of their clients are the young elite golfers who are headed to college on scholarship and they ensure that these athletes stay fit and injury-free.Victor added that his training at Titleist Performance Institute focused on rotational sports such as golf, baseball, tennis and hockey and that he works with those athletes as well. He added that when it comes to training the businessman who loves golf these men and women tend not to be flexible, play without warming up and most sit behind a desk all day. Physical training can go a long way to help them not only improve their golf game but to avoid injury. In addition to fitness training this academy also enjoys the presence of local pros like Bobby Rittberger of Garden City Golf, John Kuntz of Garden City Country, Ed Kelly of Cherry Valley, Colin McConchie of Hempstead Golf and Country Club and John Guitton. So you can also schedule a lesson from your favorite pro if you like. One-stop shopping at its finest.Like all golf fanatics, I have always hated winter because the golf courses are largely shut down. Finally, there is a way around the winter blues. What better way to keep your game going, set up next years goals, get some real golf training, get fitted for some new clubs and just chat about the latest golf news from down under or Hawaii.I am lucky enough to have an inside the ropes view of what its like to play on the PGA tour since many of my clients are well-known tour players. So I know that its now uniform practice to have a team of sophisticated experts including a fitness trainer, a sport psychologist, a swing coach and a putting coach.

It is inevitable that these methods would slowly become known to serious amateur golfers. Being such a cerebral game, golf has led the way in sport psychology and in the use of metrics and analytics to analyze performance.

The newly opened Garden City John Ondrush Golf and Fitness Academy is a gold mine for the golfer, young or old, who seeks game improvement and physical fitness. Welcome to Nassau County gentleman and wishing you all the best of good fortune. Weve been waiting for you.

West Ham sweating on the fitness of Lukasz Fabianski and David Martin – FourFourTwo USA

West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini is desperately hoping goalkeepers Lukasz Fabianski or David Martin will be fit to face Crystal Palace on Boxing Day.

First-choice Fabianksi has been out since September with a hip injury and Martin suffered a knock against Southampton last time out.

Pellegrini admits the next couple of days will be crucial but, should neither keeper be fit, West Ham face the prospect of lining up with error-prone Spaniard Roberto in goal.

Since he replaced Fabianski, West Ham lost five and drew one of their next six matches without keeping a clean sheet, with Roberto at fault for five goals.

Pellegrini eventually lost patience and turned to third-choice Martin, who kept a clean sheet on his Premier League debut in the 1-0 win at Chelsea.

Now Fabianski and Martin are battling to be fit for the trip to Selhurst Park.

Both of them are recovering. We will see in the next day what happens with which of them is able to play, said Pellegrini.

Neither Lukasz or David are able to play two games in 48 hours. Both of them have muscle problems, and we will see what happens.

Both of them could be missing, both of them could be playing, we will see. These two days will be very important to have the medical decision, the players decision and of course, mine.

Roberto didnt have good performances when he played but I always say he has a career behind him, a lot of experience.

Maybe he was a bit unlucky but I continue to trust in him. If he has to play he will do it in the way we know he can do.

Lukasz has to have confidence in how he feels after not playing for so long. He is looking well, working a bit harder every day. If he is not ready for the 26th, maybe for the 28th or January 1 but in one week, he will be playing.

Silverwood hopeful Archer will prove fitness for first Test against South Africa – Isle of Wight County Press

England coach Chris Silverwood admits a couple of rapid spells from the recovering Jofra Archer could be enough to put him in contention for the Boxing Day Test against South Africa.

The tourists have seen their best laid plans for the series fall foul of an illness that swept the camp and ruled Archer, Stuart Broad and Jack Leach out of both warm-up matches.

All three hit the nets on Monday, alongside Craig Overton and Dom Bess who had been called up to cover them, as Silverwood cast his eye over proceedings.

Leach is an outside bet to play, with England strongly erring towards a seam-heavy attack bolstered by occasional spinners Joe Root and Joe Denly, while Broad seems increasingly certain to take the field at Centurion.

The 33-year-old is understood to have progressed best over recent days and, with 134 caps over 12 years, is deemed a relatively low-risk selection should he declare himself ready.

All of which leaves Archer as the major question mark. The cautious approach would be to not risk a second under-prepared bowler, particularly with James Anderson also returning from a long-term injury.

But Archer matched Broad in sending down five overs at full speed in the practice session and, with England expecting SuperSport Park to be pace-friendly, it may also be a gamble to exclude a man who is capable of topping 95mph.

We saw how he was running in and bowling fast in those nets, said Silverwood.

He bowled a few overs with me the day before and he just backed it up again, so if we can see a few more sessions like that then hed throw his hat in the ring.

Maybe theres a little bit more caution around it, if Im brutally honest, but more than anything its for his well-being as well.

If hes going out on the pitch we need to make sure hes 100%, but equally hes played a lot of cricket as well albeit maybe not at Test level.

I dont think (its a gamble) as long as from a medical point of view they feel good.

The level of risk would be reduced yet further if England do follow their instincts by omitting a specialist spinner, as they did in their previous match against New Zealand Hamilton, meaning Archer would be one of five seam options.

The fact that South Africas first-choice slow bowler, Keshav Maharaj, got through just 14 wicketless overs in the last Test at the ground will hardly dissuade them.

You look at wickets taken by seam, wickets taken by spin and the averages that go along with them it suggests that seam is the way forward, said Silverwood.

Thats the thing that has most effect on the game here, so were seriously looking at that.

Centurion is a special place for the England coach, who tasted his only Test victory in six caps on the ground.Sadly, that result in 2000 is best remembered for the fact it was tainted by Hansie Cronjes match-fixing corruption.

Ive got feelings on both sides but at the same time it was a great experience for me, added Silverwood.

You get over it. To be honest I have good memories of playing in a Test that we won and its lovely to come back. Its a great ground.

An Expert’s Advice on Coping With Post-Holiday Depression and the Dreaded January Slump – POPSUGAR

I've always felt that Fall and the buildup to the holiday season are the best times of year. Starting in September, you get the fresh start of the changing seasons, then the excitement of Halloween and cozy family time over Thanksgiving. It's all a crescendo to the big finale: the holiday season, which means a break from work or school, much-needed time with family and friends, the best food, and major relaxation.

The problem can start once it's all over. You've just spent weeks or even months looking forward to the holidays, rushing from one social engagement to the next, focusing on the people you love, and making the most out of this time of year. Then, all of a sudden, it's over. You wake up on Jan. 2 and it's like . . . now what? That whiplash from December to January, from holiday to reality, can leave you disoriented, bereft, or even depressed. For people who can't or choose not to spend time with family or friends, or who struggle with depression year-round, those feelings might start even earlier. Coping with them can feel like a challenge that renews itself every year, never getting any easier.

"Around the time of the holidays, there's so much emphasis on human connection," said Alyssa Mancao, LCSW, a clinical social worker in California who specializes in depression and anxiety. You might schedule more social gatherings on your calendar. You might spend more time with family and friends. When all of that ends, the sudden loss of connection (or not having those connections to begin with) can trigger feelings of loneliness, Alyssa said.

You're also likely to have more time off during the holidays. You relax your usual structure and routine, Alyssa said, which feels good and is good for you; we all need a break from time to time. Returning to the grind after that time off naturally dredges up feelings of dread. "It's going back to all of the things that you have to do, those things that were put on pause," Alyssa said. "You find that those are things that don't go away. They're still there, you still have to face them." It's like coming back to work after any vacation: a little depressing.

That natural letdown of coming back to your routine combines with whatever deeper emotions the post-holiday period brings up for you: loneliness, homesickness, maybe sorrow or grief. It's no surprise that the combination can lead to a downturn in your mood and mental health.

Dealing with your post-holidays slump isn't easy, but it's not impossible. Alyssa said the recommendations intersect with treatments for depression. And while these tips are all things you can do by yourself, remember that seeking therapy and professional help is always an option, especially if your post-holiday slump isn't abating over time. (If you've never seen a therapist before, here's how to find one and prepare for your first session.)
