Outdoor fitness center in the works in Salem | News, Sports, Jobs – SalemNews.net

SALEMStudies show that when communities encourage physical exercise they tend to be healthier physically, mentally and socially. The city Parks Commission hopes to further prove that theory, as they discussed purchasing and maintaining equipment and surfacing for an outdoor fitness area at Wednesdays meeting.

The area, which would consist of seven pieces of equipment and a sign, would be free and open to the whole public, including men and women of all ages.

Parks Director Shane Franks received permission from the board to ask the community foundation for funding for the project, as he continues to apply for grants.

There are a lot of people that cant afford to be members of the community and fitness center here, Commission Chair John Panezott said. This gives everyone an opportunity to have a good workout. Its really a complete workout.

The commission also gave Franks permission to ask for funds for a movie system, including a screen, projector, speakers and DVD player for outdoor movies. Franks said the goal is to show about five free movie events each year at the band shell in Waterworth Memorial Park. The equipment is easily portable and can be moved to other venues for separate annual park programs.

In other business, Franks created a mission statement for the department, which all members of the commission accepted.

As I continue to apply for grants, one of the things everyone asks for is a mission statement, Franks said. I would like to adopt one to everyone understands what our main goals are.

The mission statement includes the departments goal to provide clean, safe and diverse year-round recreational opportunities to

accommodate the needs of the residents and visitors of the community.

Park Foreman Jim Grimm said that the department does recycle Christmas trees, and they will be taken the day after Christmas until Jan. 31. Anyone can brig a tree to Memorial Waterworth Park during that time.

The commission approved a public informational meeting at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 8 in the city council chamber to discuss the idea of a volunteer program for the park.

I want to see if wed have any local residents that would be interested in becoming an official volunteer, Franks said. We do get a lot of people volunteering their help, so maybe we can get a little more organized with it.

Franks idea is to form a Friends of the Park group to get directly involved with park activities and events.

Were getting to a point where we have several volunteers that want to help, Grimm said. This is a good way to communicate and get the word out.

The Fitbit Versa 2, the Perfect Everymans Fitness Tracker, is Now on Sale – Slate

Photo illustration by Slate. Photo by Fitbit.

Why you dont have this yet: You keep thinking youll dig out that old pedometer you bought in the 90s.

Why you want this: Reviewers agree that the Fitbit Versa 2, a combination smartwatch-fitness tracker, is a great option for a basic model. If youre looking for a tracker specifically for intensive athletic training, this option lacks built-in GPS, but otherwise it performs all the necessary fitness tracking and phone tasks.

What the experts say: TechRadar writes: With the Versa 2, Fitbit proves that less is more. The fitness brand has taken everything that made the original a compelling budget smartwatch, improves on those features, adds a somewhat fiddly voice assistant, and spits out a near-perfect fitness tracker that comes with some smartwatch perks.

What the people say: It optimizes the features that matter. (I actually have an Apple Watch and prefer to wear the Fitbit because I think Fitbit really nailed the features that are important to me - fitness, battery life, sleep tracking, messages on wrist. Everything else I can handle on my phone but it is nice that the features I care about are done so well on this watch. Also, it is really comfortable to wear. I never take it off.)

The device is well-designed. (I love the size, the style, visibility of the stats I want to check on several times a day, the choice of faces and colors, the choices and prices of the bands, and I love the price!)

The Fitbit Versa 2 is currently $130, or 35 percent off the normal price.

Slate has relationships with various online retailers. If you buy something through our links, Slate may earn an affiliate commission. We update links when possible, but note that deals can expire and all prices are subject to change. All prices were up to date at the time of publication.

Apple still lists this bogus health & fitness app after Google removed it – PhoneArena

An app in the App Store called Lunar is currently the third most popular app in the Health and Fitness category after launching just three months ago. The listing in the App Store says that Lunar "tracks your period, ovulation, fertility, and much more." And the app also says that it helps women get pregnant by telling them when they are most fertile and able to conceive. Lunar also claims to be able to test users' blood sugar, blood pressure, ovulation levels and the genetic makeup of their unborn child merely by scanning their fingertips or stomach using a smartphone camera.

Two of the bogus claims made by the Lunar app according to Huffington Post

Google has already kicked the app off of the Google Play Store where it had an average review of 4.7 out of 5. You can't trust any of these reviews since the developer behind Lunar offered people the chance to win a $25 Sephora gift card by leaving a 5-star review of the app. Before the app was banned by Google, it was one of the Play Store's top free Health & Fitness apps.

Lunar bribed people to get a 5-star rating

Some of the claims made by Lunar on social-media sound like they are old-wives tales aimed at the ignorant. On Facebook, Lunar told women to pee in a glass and add salt as a pregnancy test. At least one woman complied and posted a photo of her pee. On Instagram, it posted that women can enlarge their breast size by rubbing them "to flush out toxins and stimulate their growth." And in a blog post, Lunar said that women need to gain weight and go on a vegan diet to increase their chances of having twins.

One of the fears that experts have is that consumers will truly believe that health claims made by the app and use it in lieu of a visit to the doctor. Product-review expert Saoud Khalifah says, "People are getting duped and in many cases, legitimate businesses cant compete anymore because there are people leveraging nefarious tactics to get ahead. Platforms arent stopping them."

RHOC’s Tamra Judge Threatens to Sue Kelly Dodd & Slams Her as a Bully for Comments About Her Gym, Kelly Speaks – Reality Blurb

Tamra Judge is ready to file a lawsuit against her Real Housewives of Orange County co-star, Kelly Dodd, who attempted to involve herself in Jim Bellinos lawsuit against her earlier this year.

After Tamra denied that her gym, CUT Fitness, used the services of Groupon during a spat over their businesses at the reunion, Kelly called her out on Twitter by sharing her Groupon ad as Tamra fired back by suggesting the ad was seven years old and threatening to sue her bully co-star for attacking her business.

Tamra said she is not on [Groupon] here is your Groupon!! Kelly wrote.

Check your facts dumb-a**, Tamra replied. This is from MANY YEARS ago. Like I said we are Not on [Groupon], but if we were whats the shame? [It] was a great way to get people into our business [CUT Fitness] when we started [seven] years ago.

After seeing Tamras response, Kelly suggested her co-star was backpedaling and accused her of lying about her use of the online discount company.

Is backpedaling a workout routine they offer at CUT Fitness? When you stop lying so frequently in situations where its easy to expose the truth, you wont have to always scramble to change your story must be exhausting, Kelly tweeted.

You poor thing. You still dont understand even though I explained it to [you]. We are Not on Groupon, Tamra fired back. Have not been in years, if we were I would admit it. That is an extremely old ad thats not active.

Tamra then threatened to file a lawsuit against Kelly on behalf of her gym.

Keep attacking my business and youll find yourself in [a] lawsuit [with CUT Fitness], Tamra warned.

In another tweet, Tamra slammed Kelly as a bully after a fan verified that the Groupon ad she had shared was inactive.

Exactly. Its just Kelly being a bully, Tamra wrote.

During Wednesdays reunion episode, Tamra and Kelly got into a war of words over their businesses after Tamra pointed out that Kellys Positive Beverage drinks were on sale at Target for $1 and Kelly suggested Tamra had to use Groupons services for her losing freaking gym.

Prior to Kellys Twitter feud with Tamra, she took to Instagram to set the record straight regarding her involvement with Jims lawsuit against Tamra and Shannon after being accused of writing a note amid the case which ultimately proved costly for her co-stars.

Shannon said last night on a show that you had given a written note to a prosecuting attorney that helped the case against [Tamra] and Shannon Is that true? the fan asked.

That is not true!! That is [100 percent] a lie! Kelly insisted.

The Real Housewives of Orange County season 14 reunion, part two, airs Monday, December 23 at 10 p.m. on Bravo.

This Powerlifter Tried the Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test With No Training – menshealth.com

"You're never going to be the best if you don't train like the best," says powerlifter Xavier Barkley. He's called to put his muscle where his mouth is in a new video from Marine veteran Armando Nava, who challenges him to take on the Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test (PFT). While his lifting training is not to be sniffed at, Xander soon finds he struggles to meet the rigorous criteria of the PFT.

The first round consists of "dead hang" pullups until failure: Xavier completes 21 reps with perfect form, surpassing the minimum requirement and stopping just shy of the perfect score, which is 23.

Next up are abdominal crunches: Marines of Xavier's age have to complete 70 reps in a 2 minute window to pass the test, with an ideal target of 115. Xavier manages 85 before he can't go on. "That shit hurt," he says. "That was serious, you guys, that was really a challenge."

The third and final component of the PFT is a 3 mile run. This must be completed in under 18 minutes for a perfect score, with 27 minutes as the maximum cutoff time. The run is where Xavier struggles, and he's not the first: earlier this year bodybuilders Matt and Mike tried the Marine Corps PFT and as with their other videos, were defeated by the cardio portion of the challenge.

Xavier's finishing time is 28 minutes, 43 seconds; a failing score. "If I were prepared, I probably would have done a lot better, and I probably would have actually made the time," he says. "By lap four, lap five, is where I let it slip... It's not easy, it's very difficult."

"[Powerlifting] training is more just a pick up and go, strict build process," he adds, expressing his respect for the training that the marine corps have to go through in order to be ready in all conditions.

How A Weightlifting Community of Dads Became a Lifeline for This Fitness Coach – Thrive Global

The catalyst to my fitness journey started when I was 12 years old and was tagged as the scrawny one in my class. I remember my father, who was avid fitness enthusiast, took me to the gym shortly after that and that experience made a lasting impact. From there, the gym would be a place that would influence my awareness of self, both physically and mentally. Additionally, it became a safe haven for me to check in with myself, and connect with other men in my life who may be going through similar experiences. Throughout my fitness journey Ive been on a mission to cultivate a community of men, especially fathers, who may be looking for more than just a place to exercise but the support of others like themselves. Thats what inspired me to create a Facebook community thats changed my life, and so many others as well.

In September 2018, I was expecting my first child and wanted to avoid the proverbial dad bod. Thats when I started the Facebook Group Dads Who Lift, inviting my Facebook friends to join and talk about what it was like to raise kids and stay in shape in the process.

Since then, the Group has grown to more than 21,000 members and has become a place for a whole range of dads from new fathers to ones whose kids have flown the nest all on various parts of their fitness journey and personal lives. Our community discusses topics and offer advice on everything from having accountability in their workouts and showcasing what routine is working for them, to asking for advice on disciplining their kids and sharing struggles with their partners.

As we wind down the year, the conversation in our Group, like so many others, has shifted to the best ways to stay motivated during the holiday season and tips for setting (and sticking to!) New Years resolutions. For me, being part of this community holds me accountable. And it seems Im not alone. I recently learned that here in the U.S., more than 6.5 million people are part of at least one of the over 40,000 fitness groups on Facebook and its amazing that Dads Who Lift is one small part of that. So in the spirit of community and sticking to your goals, here are four actionable tips for kick starting your fitness goals in 2020 that have worked for me and so many of our Dads Who Lift members. Remember, its all about jumping in, no matter where you are on your fitness journey:

This community of Dads is special to me, not only because its a support system for my fitness goals and journey, but because it reminds me of my earliest memories of going to the gym with my dad, and continues to fuel the work I do today. Dads Who Lift is a community for dads to ask anything theres no such thing as a dumb question. When youre part of a community, youre all there to grow together.

Got Fitness? Bend Tops Another List | Local News | Bend – The Source Weekly

With New Years just around the corner, many Americans set goals to get in shape and maintain a healthier diet this time of year. But how accessible and affordable is it to achieve these resolutions?

Here in the Bend bubble were surrounded by gyms, yoga studios, healthy restaurants and inspiring professional athletes. According to SmartAsseta personal finance technology companyBend is the best place in the country to get healthy without losing your shirt.

Bend ranked third last year.

This year, Bend took first place, beating out Iowa City, Iowa and Wenatchee, Washington by slim margins. Cities were evaluated in five areas: percentage of commuters who walk or bike, concentration of fitness professionals, concentration of fitness businesses and percentage of fast-food restaurants. The researchers also evaluated the hourly pay of personal trainers as an indicator of how affordable it is to get in a shape in a particular city: trainers in Bend make an average of $15.07 an hour, according to the study.

Boulder, Colorado beat out Bend in the category of human-powered commuting with 9% biking or walking compared to Bends 4%. It also had more fitness professionals per capita than Bend, but got dinged for the $25.65 an hour people in Boulder pay their personal trainers on average, and thus it ranked 10th overall.

So is it easier to be healthy in Bend?

According to Datafiniti, close to a quarter of adults in America eat fast food every day, but the availability of this kind of food varies by state. Alabama has the highest number of fast-food restaurants with 6.3 for every 10,000 residents and Vermont has the lowest, with only 1.9. Oregon fares pretty well, ranking 16th, right behind California in a list of states with the lowest number of fast-food restaurants, according to a 2017 Census Bureau study of limited-service establishments. Here in Bend, many restaurants that might be considered fast-food actually have some healthy options: Caf Yumm, Laughing Planet and Active Culture, for example, serve some dishes with high protein/low fat content along with soups and salads, making it easier to make more nutritious choices on the go.

Bendites also live in a place where getting out on the trails is more accessible than other cities. According to the Bend Park and Recreation District, Bend has 70 miles of trails and 81 parks, with more in the works.

What's in store: The Lagree Fitness Methodthe next evolution of Pilatesuses a machine called a Megaformer, with bigger bells and whistles than a Pilates reformer. Offered at CB Fit in Walnut Creek and Dublin, Lagree uses slow movements to create constant tension throughout various muscle groups, leading to a leaner and more toned result. While doing bicep curls, youll sit on your tailbone, which activates your core, and your legs will be shaking from the leg series you just did. Its strength training without much joint pressurelow impact but high intensity.

Who it's for: Almost everybody, says CB Fit co-owner Chelsea Olarte. Weve had a 70-year-old woman come. What's in store: Defy gravity at Apex Movement NorCal, a parkour and ninja gym where you can tackle obstacles like a rolling log, rings, and a warped wall. If this sounds reminiscent of NBCs American Ninja Warrior, well, thats because it is. Owner Alan Connealy is a former contestant on the show and was inspired to create the gym to aid his own training. Today, the 11,000-square-foot facility draws athletes from all over the world who come to gain greater functional strength in nearly every muscle group.

Who it's for: One thing thats made American Ninja Warrior so popular is that its your average Joe Schmo who gets up off the couch and does the course, Connealy says. We have a lot of iconic obstacles from the show that people have wondered if they can do. Here, they have the opportunity to try them in a safe environment. And people have transformed themselves in so many ways by training for it. So we attract everybody, from kids to 50- and 60-year-old women and men who havent done anything in 20 years.

The instructor: Owner and athlete Connealy, who is also a chiropractor. (He maintains a chiropractic practice in an office next to the gym.)

Its 30 minutes, broken down into four-minute roundsfrom dumbbell squats to moves like the bear crawlwith everyone cruising at their own pace. Classes have a friendly, were-all-in-this-together vibe.

Who it's for: Anybody who wants strength and more mobility, says trainer Jason Smith. Its great for folks who enjoy the sensation they get from HILIT or exerting their bodygetting that sweat, getting the heart rate up. Iron Zuu creates an entry point for people of all skill levels, and its low-impact, so its safe. I have clients who have had knee and hip replacements, and theyre all moving. Every movement in the Zuu family helps with injury prevention, joint mobility, and strength. Iron Zuu also helps with mental toughness.

The instructor:Smith, an avid Zuu enthusiast. Five times in my life, health and wellness legitimately put me back on the right track, he says. I wanted to take something thats provided me with so much joy and happiness and give back by helping people reacquaint themselves with movement.

Come prepared: Wear comfortable clothes and athletic shoes, and bring water. And remember to take a deep breath and enjoy, Smith adds. We may not be able to get all the way down into our frog squat. We find our own range, and then we work from there. As we become more mobile, we start seeing the benefits of these amazing body-weight movements. There are no egos in Zuu. We bring a community spirit. We run around, we high five, and we tell each other, Great job!

When and where: Check weekly class schedules at Crunch Fitness, Walnut Creek. crunch.com/locations/walnut-creek.

Dont beintimidated. Its you versus the obstaclenot you versus other people. Just stay consistent with it. Its neat how quickly people can progress. Its fun, and the cherry on top is that youre getting in shape.Alan Connealy ofApex Movement NorCal

Want a challenging workout without leaving the house? From basic to high-tech, the options for at-home fitness are vastand evolving all the time.

Remember back in the 20th century, when home gyms meant working out alone, with no one there to urge you on? Todays immersive, state-of-the-art exercise systems have display screens that bring the high-energy studio experience right into your home. Live trainers keep you pumped, as artificial intelligence tracks your performance metrics. Here are three to try:

Get your cardio on with Peloton, a stationary bike with a giant iPad-like display that lets you ride with other Peloton members, live and on-demand, as your instructoroften a competitive cyclist or triathletekeeps you motivated and energized. (If cycling isnt your jam, try the brands Tread package for runners.) onepeloton.com.

For strength training, Tonal is a patented digital weight system that uses trickery involving magnets and electricity to give you a rigorous workoutsquats, chest presses, and moreusing a device thats sleeker than a wall-mounted TV. If your idea of workout bliss is joining a rowing crew, try Hydrow, an ergonomic rowing machine and screen that connects you to live rowing events in picturesque spots like Miami Beach. Invite a faraway friend to join you in a boat, and compete against other teams in real time. hydrow.com.

Like the idea of a boot-camp workout, but have trouble fitting a class into your schedule? Create your own boot camp at home and reap the benefits of a strength-training regimen thats fit for a Marine. Do it right by hitting your upper body, lower body, and core and mixing vigorous activity with short breaks. To build your boot camp, design a circuit by setting up several stations, such as these:

Incorporate good old-fashioned (no-cost) body-weight exercises like burpees, lunges, and push-ups.
