Pottsgrove Beat The Calendar on Fitness Promise – The Sanatoga Post

With financial grant support from the Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation, the district Tuesday (Dec. 17, 2019) said its continuing to provide a diverse and wide range of healthy programs. So far theyve included an August wellness fair for teachers and staff, a student-oriented Wellness Week during October that featured outdoor fitness and plant-based food choices (above at right), and November Farmers Markets in its elementary schools.

Most recently the markets presented by Pottsgroves food service provider, Chartwells (above and below), gave kindergarten through fifth graders opportunities to sample, taste, and take home a variety of featured fruits and vegetables to try with their families, the district said. Those programs were jointly sponsored by Tower Health and Giant Foods.

During its Wellness Week, the district added, staff members in each school building emphasized good health with age-appropriate activities:

More than 40 local vendors turned out for presentations at the August wellness fair to educate Pottsgrove employees (above) on new trends in fitness and wellness. Staffers also could choose to attend more than a dozen professional development sessions that encouraged incorporating healthy lifestyles into classrooms and their own homes.

One of the most popular content creators and fitness models in the world, Sommer has accumulated more than 26 million followers on her social platforms.

Raised on a ranch in Larkspur, Colorado, Sommer grew up in a bodybuilding family. She began lifting weights at a young age and started competing in the NPC National Bodybuilding Championships at 16. Sommer will promote Ts and its capabilities ahead of the platform's early 2020 launch. Over the next few months, additional influencers and personalities across music, travel, fashion & makeup, gaming, health, sports, and more will join Sommer as ambassadors for Ts.

Sidemen’s Vikkstar reveals his one-year body and fitness transformation – Dexerto

Vikram Vikkstar' Barn is one of the biggest YouTubers in the UK, having amassed over five million subscribers as a member of the Sidemen. Yet, he took his content on a different route in December and showed fans his body transformation over the last year.

Vikkstar joined the Sidemen in 2013 and is one of the few of them that has stuck to regular gaming content since joining. While they originally started creating videos around the likes of Call of Duty and FIFA, much of the group has moved on to predominantly creating real-life content.

As Vikk explains in the video, he had always been very skinny, even calling himself skin and bone when looking at older footage and goes on to showcase his body transformation.

At first speaking about how he used to be very light and not have much meat on him, Vikkstar points to a couple of things that gave him the inspiration to get into shape: a skiing injury and JJ KSI Olatunjis fitness journey in preparing for his boxing matches.

Explaining how he started the process at 55 kilograms (121 lbs), he then put on 10kg (22 lbs) in the first six months with a lot of calorie intake and weight training, before incorporating more cardio into his workouts.

Now, Vikk says, he weighs in at approximately 60kg, having shaved off a lot of the fat that came with his weight gain and can finally lift his own body weight. He goes on to say "I feel so much better. I sleep better, I feel like I'm generally happier. It's that little endorphin rush and a new area to conquer for me and I'm really enjoying the whole process.

Vikkstar goes on to show some clips from the Sidemen movie trailer, in which he is noticeably smaller and describes himself as skinny fat saying that he doesnt have much fat but what he does simply hangs off of his skin.

He then shows what he would do in a typical workout, but advises viewers not to simply copy what he does, and instead figure out what works best for them.

Finally, Vikk states that he would love people to watch this video and take inspiration from it by going on their own fitness journey.

Peloton Slips, iFit Surges as ‘Connected Fitness’ Hits Fever Pitch – GearJunkie

A trend of connected fitness has brought screen-based workouts to the mainstream.

Its a business tale that may soon have a ripple effect for exercisers around the planet. Two plotlines this week crossed as Peloton reeled from a stock-price drop and negative publicity around an ad, whilecompetitor iFit announced massive funding.

Peloton launched as a Kickstarter project in 2013, promising to bring the studio-cycling experience to your home. Live and on-demand classes lured a swell of backers, and the company catapulted into the mass market.

It later unveiled a treadmill and new iterations of its screen-based technology, expanding a physical footprint in retail. The brand caught metaphorical fire in the process to become something of a venture-capital darling with ascending valuation.

A trail runner finds sage advice in a virtual-coaching program from iFit. It changed his view of what a session on a treadmill screen can do. Read more

Another narrative was unfolding in Utah and the headquarters of ICON Health & Fitness. The company owns iFit and multiple exercise-equipment brands.

For more than 15 years, ICON has worked onits own version of connected fitness, including a library of onscreen classes, personal trainers, and videos made to mimic moving through the real world. A suite of ICON equipment slows, speeds, tilts, and resists to match experiences seen on screen.

This week, a capital management company banked on iFit and its vision of the future of exercise. The interactive fitness platformraised $200 million to help amplify its growth.

News site Axios cited the iFit deal a BFD (big f*cking deal) on the day the news broke. A summary noted the transaction reflects how home fitness companies and their investors keep moving toward the Peloton model, minus the highly questionable ad strategy.

In addition to iFit, ICON is a parent company to NordicTrack,ProForm, Freemotion, Golds Gym, and more. This makes the company among the biggest players in the space.

What are the plans for the $200 million? ICON gave some hints. In a press release, CEOScott Watterson said iFit will dramatically expand consumer awareness, broaden the most expansive library of interactive fitness content in the world, and continue to invest in innovation and technology that truly enhances our customers fitness experience.

ICON competes with fitness manufacturers like Life Fitness and Cybex International. New brands includeEchelon, which offers a fitness app, video classes, and bikes that fit iPad tablets. Another startup, Mirror, builds a display into a reflective rectangle mounted on a wall and serves as your new personal trainer, and so much more.

As for Peloton, despite the hiccups this month, the company remains a dominant competitor in the connected-fitness space. Last year, the company recorded $915 million in revenue and is commonly cited as a $4 billion valuation company.

Cyclists know Zwift and its popular app. The company turns indoor training into a game one that has attracted a mass of users who used to sit and spin on a bike trainer alone. Now they log in, ride, race on video game-like courses, and see where their avatar ranks on a real-world leaderboard.

In agreeing to sanction the first esports championship, UCI the world's governing body for cycling acknowledged it needs to 'remain relevant to all audiences.' Read more

When competition in a market is this intense, its not just about products and the price of a subscription. Brand recognition and marketing are crucial to a network effect with consumers.ICONs latest funding, asWatterson noted, will be directed towardconsumer awareness as well as product refinement.

The connected-fitness industry is no doubt hot. iFit has a built-in user base, claiming 330,000 paid memberships, and thats growing rapidly. We added more than 77,000 new paid iFit subscribers in our last quarter alone, the company touted.

Watterson said his company is laser-focused on bringing iFit to as many consumers as possible, on as many products as possible, as fast as possible. The capital raise, he said, just accelerated our ability to achieve our mission.

Putting Greek Design on the Global Fitness Map – Greek City Times

Luxurious to the touch as well as in quality and appearance, strictly eco-friendly and human-friendly, made by women for women to generate a real sense of individuality, comfort, empowerment, and beauty, is one way to describe the IAmVibes clothing brand, created by Katerina Melemeni. The Greek designer has lived all around the world over the last 20 years, from New York and Rome to Sri Lanka and Spain, studying at the KLC School of Design in London and eventually specialising in yoga gear.

Describing herself as an eclectic, artistic and passionate woman, Melemeni is certainly drawing the worlds attention not only to an ethical and sustainable range of trendy yoga apparel but also to Greece, a country where 20 years ago yoga was little more than a mystery and when most local fashion designers were relatively unacknowledged beyond their borders. Meanwhile, as a female entrepreneur who overlooks practically all aspects of her business herself from the actual designs to IAmVibes marketing, social media and more, this dynamic mother of two is also setting an example of the new Greek woman, an example we definitely applaud.

Now based in Athens, Melemeni has created a very successful business. I only work with beautiful things that a real and spark emotions in me when I see them, wear them or touch them, Melemeni says. And I only work with eco-sustainable materials, because we do not have a Planet B. Currently all our fabrics are made in Italy, with eco-friendly yarns and manufactured in the utmost respect for our environment. I want to create an intimate connection with the woman, so my materials are very soft on the skin, but also high performance, so they become excellent for anything we do throughout the day. My clothes may be designed for yoga, but thats if theyre comfortable during a headstand, they will be comfortable with you when you are on your feet. They can be worn 24/7. In fact, I sleep in my seamless Astra leggings! she laughs.

Its not by chance that IAmVibes has achieved a glowing global reputation, and that yoga-lovers as well as women who simply enjoy the modern cuts and deep comfort of her designs are very serious about the garments high-tech advantages. From the exceptionally soft and delicate BodyVibes fabric to the EcoVibes range made with suede-like ECONYL (regenerated nylon), which is both 100% eco-conscious and breathable on the skin, to the amazing seamless ASTRA range, which warms you when its cool and cools you when its hot because its made with a fabric with thousands of hollow microfibres that regulate body temperature.

Apart from keeping the environment as a top priority in her designs, Melemeti also considers the impact of labour that goes into making clothes and has made sure her business offers humanitarian standards to the women who work to make them. During my travels, especially when visiting factories in my previous jobs, I saw how many women were employed in the production facilities; and travelling to some developing countries in Asia I witnessed harsh conditions that made me feel so powerless. I thought that perhaps getting involved in apparel, which is among the industry sectors that employ mostly women, was my way of contributing something valuable to women, by paying them a premium and making certain that their working conditions are ethical. I want to use my business to inspire and implement solutions to empower women around the world. I know I run a small business, but Id like to think that even a small contribution can help support one woman somewhere in this world, and that can make a difference, she says.

Her very modern, minimalist designs in shades of grey, black, blue with touches of colours like rust orange or white are neutral enough to combine with other parts of ones daily wardrobe, and the Logo collection features the upside down Hamsa hand symbol. Very different from her other designs is the new range called Blossoming Lotus, which is a soft pink and is dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness. Melemeni explains the vision behind this range: We are trying to raise some funds dedicated to Breast Cancer research, so with this range, were providing a 10% discount to our customers and then 15% of the profits will be donated to research to foundations.

Alexia Amvrazi enjoys the thrill of discovering beauty in the world around her. With a passionately hands-on approach to Greece's travel, gastronomy, holistic living, culture, innovation and creativity, for 20 years she has explored and shared her findings with the world on all aspects of the country and its people via writing, radio, blogs and videos. Although her childhood and early youth in Italy, Egypt and England left her feeling somewhat root-less, she is by now firmly connected to her native land, bravely weathering the hurricane known as the Greek crisis!

Fitness: How much does exercise inspire other healthy habits? – Montreal Gazette

A study suggests that those who start racking up more minutes of exercise are also likely to post lower blood pressure readings, get more sleep and eat more fruits and vegetables.Bill Keay / Postmedia files

Theres no doubt exercise is good for you. If anything, the benefits of regular physical activity arent stated enough, with improved longevity, vitality and quality of life all positive outcomes of being active. Another benefit to exercise that hasnt received the attention it deserves is its ability to spark individuals to adopt healthier habits.

Eating well, sleeping well, maintaining a healthy weight, refraining from smoking, drinking in moderation and reducing sedentary time are all habits worth embracing. When combined with regular exercise, the health benefits are even greater, including slowing down the physical and mental decline often associated with aging. Yet too few Canadians exercise regularly, and even fewer can lay claim to an impressive list of healthy lifestyle behaviours.

The idea that exercise is a gateway to positive lifestyle changes isnt new. Common sense suggests the fitter you are, the more likely you are to choose healthier foods, sleep better, move more and shed some of those unwanted pounds. This has been proved time and time again by novice exercisers who suddenly cant stop talking about the success of their new diet, the number of steps they take daily and the sleep stats logged on their new smartwatch.

But up until now, there has been very little hard data supporting the theory exercise is a catalyst for healthier behaviours, which is why an article posted in the BMJ Open Sport and Exercise Medicine open-access journal is sparking interest. The articles authors reviewed the lifestyle stats accumulated by 34,061 individuals who participated in the Vitality program, an interactive online wellness platform that incentivizes healthy choices like exercise, medical checkups, sleep, healthy food choices and stress-reducing activities. The more healthy choices members make, the more points they accumulate, which they can trade for discount coupons to participating retail outlets (grocery stores, fitness clubs) or add to the point total of their corporate team vying to outperform colleagues on other teams.

The researchers wanted to use the copious data collected by Vitality to determine whether earning physical activity points was followed by improvements in engagement with other health-promoting behaviour and health markers. They also wanted to see if there were differences in healthy uptakes between those who accumulated the greatest number of exercise minutes (150 or more) per week and those who accumulated the fewest (less than 59 minutes) over the same time period.

Turns out all but the already active exercisers in the Vitality program increased the number of minutes per week they were active. And while they were racking up all those exercise minutes, they were also eating more fruits and vegetables, getting more sleep, spending less time being sedentary, cutting back on alcohol, experiencing less stress and posting better health markers (such as lower blood pressure readings).

The improvements were greatest in those with the most to gain, those with low baseline physical activity levels, said the researchers.

One of the unique aspects of the data collected by Vitality is activity monitors were worn by participants, resulting in a more accurate representation of exercise minutes than self-reported stats. Also worth noting is all lifestyle changes occurred in real-world conditions, not in a lab, which makes them more relatable to the average Joe and Jill.

Our study extends previous findings that health behaviours such as physical activity, healthy eating and abstaining from alcohol and smoking tend to co-occur in individuals and the presence of one healthy behaviour is followed by other healthy behaviours, reported the research team.

Why does establishing an exercise routine result in other lifestyle improvements? No one knows for sure, but successfully introducing an exercise habit builds confidence, especially among those who have struggled to maintain a regular workout schedule. Mastery in one domain often reinforces the ability to master another, so once someone has achieved a previously elusive fitness goal, theyre motivated to take on another challenge, like cutting down on high-calorie foods.

The message to remember in these results is change begets change. Its also notable were capable of pursuing and achieving more than one goal at a time. Taking this new information into account, monitor several lifestyle markers as you boost your activity levels. Take note of your diet, sleeping habits, blood pressure, heart rate and time spent with your feet up. Chances are if you make a commitment to boost your exercise minutes, youll be motivated to complement your efforts by making other healthy changes. Use an activity monitor to keep track of your stats and an old-fashioned notebook to chart your progress, with the end goal being an improvement in the most important health marker of all: feeling better every day.

There’s more to winter fitness than shoveling snow – Green Bay Press Gazette

Nick Rozek, For USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin Published 9:47 a.m. CT Dec. 13, 2019

There's more to winter fitness than shoveling snow.(Photo: Valerie Mosley/The Coloradoan)

Picture those precious snowflakes falling gently from the sky.

Unfortunately, they hit the ground and turn into a heavy, slippery mess. Shoveling snow is a necessary evil living in Wisconsin. This year, do not let the threat of shoveling snow drag you down. This year, prioritize your health and happiness instead of worrying about how you are going to clear your driveway.

Below are five ways to enjoy being active and social while preparing your body for the shoveling season.

No 10-gallon hats or boot spurs necessary. Line dancing is for everyone, not just cowgirls and boys. A vine left and right, a few Lindy stepsand a quick Jazz box is all you need to ignite your newly discovered love of line dancing.

Prepare for some hootin and hollerin as standard steps are set to new and classic hits, making for a wonderful experience all will enjoy. Check your local YMCA or village association for program dates and times. Bring your pedometer because you will be amazed at how much movement and steps you accumulate while having so much fun.

Just imagine ... life-size ping-pong. Most commonly played outdoors in warmer states, indoor Pickleball has grown rapidly over the cold Wisconsin winters. Whether you enjoy a pleasant dink-and-dunk-style gameor are looking to scratch your most competitive itch, Pickleball is perfect for you.

Games last 5 to 15 minutes and feature quick volleys and fun times. You are sure to break a healthy sweat, so scribble down the next Pickleball match in your calendar now.

In the spirit of the holidays, take a moment to meet and greet a new person at your fitness facility. It is always a great day to make someone else feel recognized. Whether you learn someone elses story as you walk into the building, or chat with a new member at your regular class, 'tis the season for making new friends. This can be a great opportunity to enhance your own fitness experience and maybe even gain a new workout partner.

Plowing through heavy snow takes core strength, good balanceand willingness to work hard. Who would have thought barre class could get you so well prepared for shoveling?

Integrating the balance and body awareness of balletwith the flexibility and stability of yogaand the strength of weighted movements, barre class will have your body prepared for whatever winter throws your way. With fun music in a comfortable group setting, add barre to your must-try list this season.

If shoveling alone is not high on your list of interests, try this. When the next snowfall is headed our way, make a plan with your neighbors to have a shoveling party.

Plan to work together to clear off your driveways. The work will feel much easier as each persons house will take less time. You will also get to socialize to make it a more enjoyable experience. Plan to heat up a cup of hot chocolate together when all the work is done. Keep this holiday season merry and bright with the company of your neighbors.

Staying active this holiday season should include more than waiting for the next snowfall. Set the shovel aside and enjoy all the other socially engaging and active opportunities available to you this winter.
