Meghan Markle’s trainer said Mirror is the only fitness trend he likes – INSIDER
Sebastien Lagree, a former bodybuilder, has trained a long list of A-List stars, including Meghan Markle, Michelle Obama, and Kim Kardashian.
He's also the inventor of the Megaformer, a machine workout similar to pilates but with cardio elements. When its first version launched in the early 2000s, "people didn't know if it would be a [passing] fad or a trend," Lagree told Insider. "You never know what's going to stick or not stick."
But it stuck. According to data from ClassPass, a company that provides access to a variety of gyms and fitness classes, the Megaformer was the fastest-growing exercise of the year. ClassPass users attended over a million Megaformer sessions in 2019, a 38.6% increase from 2018.
Most hyped-up exercise and wellness gadgets have less staying power. In Lagree's view, it's because most of them lack original concepts and don't add anything to the current market.
And some workout gear, he added, is downright ridiculous the Shake Weight, a 2010s trend involving a modified dumbbell, is a particular target of his derision. "Sure, it works your brachialis," or the arm muscle underneath the biceps, Lagree said. "But so does masturbating."
Still, there's one new device Lagree expects to stick around in 2020 and beyond.
Despite his disdain for most new concepts in home fitness, Lagree said he's intrigued by Mirror, a device that streams live and on-demand workouts and personal training into your home. Celebrities including Kate Hudson, Ellen Degeneres, and Reese Witherspoon have praised the equipment too.
Lagree said Mirror is an innovative way of making a wider variety of workouts more accessible to people, even if they don't want to go to the gym. Particularly in the winter, it can be beneficial for people who still want to work up a sweat without venturing out in the cold, he added.
Business Insider retail reporter Mary Hanbury reviewed the product last year and also had plenty of praise. Its "mirroring format," which allows users to see both themselves and the instructor, helps users learn new skills, and the device can customize workouts based on fitness level and injuries.
Plus, since it looks like a regular mirror, it doesn't take up space like most gym equipment, although you'll need some room around you to exercise while you're using it.
The catch is that it's not cheap, at about $1,500, not including accessories like a heart-rate monitor, which is an extra $50.
Still, Hanbury wrote, "for those who don't have the time or can't make it to a group class, this is about as good as it gets."
All you really need is your body for a good workout. Shutterstock/
Still, the best ways to work out continue to be old-school body weight moves, Lagree said. It's hard to beat the classics like pushups, squats, and lunges, and tricep dips. "You don't need the fancy equipment," he said.
His personal favorite the plank, and variations thereof, which he said is the best overall exercise. The plank is easy to modify to make it easier or harder, depending on your fitness level and how much of a challenge you're looking for.
Lagree recommended picking five or so body-weight exercises and do them one after another for about a minute each. Move as slowly as possible, he said, to get the most muscle tension out of each move. Then repeat as desired.
The most important thing for exercise, he said, is to be consistent, and don't buy into false promises about a quick fix to strength or weight loss.
"My beef with fad fitness is the way people market products ... if they were honest, they wouldn't sell it," he said. "What I'm telling you, it's not sexy, it doesn't sell. But the slow and steady approach is best."

From kayaking to fitness workouts: Dubai enriches its offer for the health conscious traveller – Euronews
With its untamed environment and rugged landscape, Hatta is the picture-perfect destination. And this centuries old exclave of Dubai also caters for todays health conscious traveller.
High up in the Hajar mountains you can soak up the history while doing a spot of hiking. There are 32 kilometres of track in the area. More than a dozen possible routes have been mapped out, with four different levels of ability. Kayaking is also on offer on the vast lake next to the Hatta dam.
Fitness expert and Youtube star Lilly Sabri @lillysabri says the walking is an ideal complement to a regular routine.
I think that when youre on a holiday you want to make memories as well so trying different things, she says. So, if youre someone goes to the gym wherever you normally train and in whatever country that might be, it might be nice to try something different. So, getting outside. You certainly couldnt do this in London where Im originally from. So, its keeping fit and healthy but in a different way.
Wellness tourism has evolved to become the travel industrys fastest growing sector something Dubai is continuing to expand upon and develop.
Across town amongst the shimmering Jumeirah Lakes Towers you will find the SMSF Heartfulness Meditation Centre. Its the only one of its kind in the MENA region and they hold daily meditation classes that attract up to 500 people.
I think we just forgot where... weve been so focused on external gratification... now people are actually zoning in and they realise whats important on how we feel and how we can impact on those around us, says fitness expert Christian Williams. This place in Dubai is not just where people live, its a stop off where people go on vacation. So, what were doing here in Heartfulness Meditation is just incredible not just for people living here but anyone who is willing to come and travel. And I can just see us moving forwards and Im just so pleased I came to this centre because its free and its on every single week.
Dubai is growing,'' says Meherish, Regional Director of Heartfulness Meditation. This place is growing and it will 100% grow because they have this thought process and this positivity in them. So, Im all for it!
If high impact is more your thing, look no further than the Dubai Fitness Challenge - where visitors and residents are encouraged to take part in 30 minutes of exercise for 30 days. Its another example of the citys commitment to being a wellness destination.
Under the striking Marina skyline over 3000 people came together to work out with The Body Coach celebrity trainer Joe Wicks who parachuted in for the event.
My perception of Dubai was like you know it was great for food and a great place for holidays but theres a massive gym scene here and theyre like really big on fitness, says Wicks. Ive been invited to loads of gyms, you know really good cross fit and circuit training classes. So, theres a big culture of people now exercising and I think its great that the city is being encouraged together.
Travellers say there amazed to find so many free events.
I feel like theres always some fitness classes going on, says one visitor. And theres so much free classes. Back home in England you pay for everything, so I feel like here because its outdoors people want to get involved, its sun-shiny so everyones always out and about.
With over 12 million overnight visitors in the first three quarters of 2019 Dubais sustaining its tourism momentum. Its known for reinventing itself to meet the needs of the travel market and these days that means making fitness and wellbeing a priority.

Consistency, commitment key to fitness-related New Year’s resolutions – Valley morning Star
It may only be the first week of December, but its never too early to think about that New Years resolution to get fit in 2020.
While a commitment to fitness is often one of the most popular resolutions, it can also be one of the easiest to let fall by the wayside as schedules get busy after the holidays.
While making the commitment to staying active and making healthier choices can be challenging, Veronica Garza, Manager of the Valley Baptist Health & Fitness Center, said there are steps we can all take over the course of the holiday season and beyond to give health-related New Years resolutions the greatest odds of success.
Its important to find something you like and something know youre going to stick with. If you start a class or an activity that you just dont enjoy, youre not going to want to continue to do it. That is unique to everyone, and you need to find something that works for you and do your best, Garza said. Start two to three times a week, especially now. Dont wait until after the holidays. If you want to lead a healthier lifestyle, start moving. There is so much sitting in our lives now, but there are so many things you can do at home to get ready for making that resolution a success.
Planning while keeping long-term goals in mind can be a major challenge when it comes to a successful healthy New Years resolution. All too often, Garza said she sees too many new clients trying to do too much, too soon.
People start so strong. They come in and they want to give 110 percent. We see it all the time, especially in January. They want to work hard and they want to make changes, so they come in seven days a week and theyre here for three hours, she said. They completely stop eating certain meals and thats where we see people not staying with their resolution. They want to make a change that is temporary and fast, but what we preach all the time is a lifestyle change. This is something youre doing for the rest of your life.
For those looking to join a gym as part of their New Years resolution to fitness, Garza said her staff of 30 employees at the Valley Baptist Health & Fitness Center the majority of which are fitness course instructors and personal trainers is committed to helping others reach their exercise goals.
The 38,000-square-foot fitness center includes mens and womens locker rooms, sauna, heated pool, multiple spacious exercise and weight machine and equipment rooms, and more, is located at 3100 N. Augusta National Drive in Harlingen. Fitness center hours are 4:45 a.m. 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Perhaps most important, Garza said, is the feeling of community and togetherness that is encouraged by the facilitys members and training staff.
A lot of people need the extra motivation of a group setting. We encourage people to come in and try a class, because its a whole group working together and encouraging each other. Its a team and we really work to build relationships, she said. We tell people, just make the commitment to come in the door. Once youre through those doors, weve got you. Were here to help you reach your goals. We build relationships with our clients we push them, we inspire and motivate them, and we love what we do here.
