Fitness column: Put stretching in its proper place to tackle workout priorities – Edmonton Journal

Paul Robinson notes that stretching should not take priority over more important workout activities.Getty Images

Despite popular cultures obsession with flexibility, stretching may in fact be hindering your progress in the gym.

To be clear, this has less to do with physiology and more to do with priority.

When starting out, I often ask new clients to complete a simple exercise to determine priorities. Pretty simple, really: itemize your top three goals and assign a percentage to each one. To be successful, exercisers should pay particular attention to the goal that occupies the biggest piece of the pie. Nine times out of 10, flexibility gets bumped by fat loss, shaping and strength.

Its not that I dislike stretching. I do it myself. The problem is, many exercisers default to stretching whenever the going gets tough. On the I dont want to do this scale, stretching anchors one end (willing to do) while hard work stoically sits at the other (no thanks). The appeal of prone comfort beats chin-ups every time.

Stretching has morphed into a sacred cow. Question it in public forums at your own risk. Believe me, I know. When Ive raised this topic at speaking engagements its been met with horrified gasps and hushed whispers heretic!

I get it, flexibility is important. However, while obesity, coronary heart disease, diabetes and sarcopenia (muscle wasting) can end your life, touching your toes, relatively speaking, falls under the nice to have category.

Again, dont get me wrong, many of our clients stretch. However, if I only see you a few times a week you can bet were going to focus on your top priorities, and stretching doesnt help you drop pounds, tighten muscle or build strength.

So, when designing your priority profile keep these stretching guidelines in mind to help you stay the course.

1) Warming up and stretching arent the same thing. Never stretch a cold muscle, as it can result in injury and hinder progress.

2) Stretching should complement your workout, not overtake it (unless, of course, your goal is flexibility). Assign the appropriate time frame as per your priority profile.

3) Proper weight training challenges muscle through a full range of motion. For exercisers with a plethora of health problems, this adequately addresses flexibility at least initially.

4) Proper stretching is as complicated as proper weight training often more so. If you cant remember how to perform eight weight training exercises, good luck remembering a series of stretches. While they have their limitations, resistance machines (the ones with seats and pins) keep things relatively simple.

5) Poor posture and imbalance require you to stretch tight, offending muscles and strengthen their weak counterparts. For example, proper stretches open an inflexible chest while mid-back exercises strengthen a weak back. Release one side and tighten the other.

6) I repeat, stretching doesnt strengthen muscle or drop pounds but it does offer comfort to beginners and gym-phobics. If youre hiding in the stretching area or attending the beginner yoga class because the weight room is a dark, foreboding place I get it.

7) Early morning exercisers, seniors, rehab patients and more advanced exercisers may require longer warmups and more advanced stretching than the average rank and file who are simply looking to grab a quick workout.

8) Stretching can offer solitude and reflection. Dont undervalue the importance of quiet, mindful contemplation.

When designing your exercise program make sure youre spending the most time and energy on priorities. Value stretching for what it is. In the end, what demands attention gets results.

This soldier aced the Army Combat Fitness Test. You’d never guess he has chronic kidney disease – USA TODAY

Rachael Riley, The Fayetteville Observer Published 11:01 a.m. ET Nov. 25, 2019 | Updated 1:16 p.m. ET Nov. 25, 2019

Stewart Rembert was kidnapped as a baby. 22 years later, he got to thank the FBI agent who saved his life. Militarykind, USA TODAY

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. When Maj. Carpaccio Pace Owens was into the seventh year of his Army career, he was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease.

A civilian insurance company denied him term life insurance based on the preexisting condition. "Im part of the population that a lot of providers are worried about, Owens said.

Owens, 43, is in stage three of the disease, meaning his kidneys function at about 50%.

Nineteenyears into his Army career, Owens is one of the first soldiers within the 82nd Airborne Division who reached an unofficial maximum score on the newArmy Combat Fitness Test, whichwill gointo effect by October 2020.

A 'Wheel of Fortune' technicality cost her a trip to Nashville: So Nashville gave her a new one

Owens said that when he received his diagnosis, doctors recommended that he medically retire.

For my quality of life, and my mental preservation, I was like, I can either take what they say and take a medical retirement or I can fight for my livelihood, Owens said. So I ended up getting on a track. I ran a mile in 14 minutes the first time after Id been diagnosed, and I was like, Hmm, Im going to have some work to do.

Owens put in the work.

On Nov. 6, he received an unofficial max score for the tests six events.

'Today': Hoda Kotb reveals to co-anchors she's engaged to Joel Schiffman

Lt. Col. Jose Durbin, director of human performance and endurance for the 82nd Airborne Division, said scoring on the Army Combat Fitness Test is based on a soldiers military occupation.

A cook, for example, would need to meet the gold, or lower level scores, and an infantry soldier would need to meet the black, or higher level scores.

The green level is the maximum level.

Maj. Owens exceeded these levels on all events, which is a pretty significant thing, Durbin said.

The range of scores are: 140 to 340 for the maximum deadlift; 4.5 to 12.5 for the standing power throw; 10 to 60 for the hand release push-ups; 3 minutes to 1 minute, 33 seconds for the sprint, drag, carry; 1 to 20 for the leg tuck; and 21 minutes to 12 minutes, 30 seconds on the 2-mile run.

Owens scores were: 340 for the deadlift; 12.4 for the standing power throw; 1 minute, 22 seconds for the sprint, drag, carry; 20 for the leg tuck; and 12 minutes, 40 seconds for the 2-mile run.

Durbin said the only reason Owens score is unofficial is because the Army gives a time limit of 90 minutes to complete all the events.

He said Owens went over that time limit because there were more soldiers per lane or event taking the test that day.

But Maj. Owens is such a phenomenal soldier and athlete that he would have maxed it anyways, Durbin said.

Thousands feared drowned: More than 14,000 sheep fall into Black Sea after ship capsizes

Owens, who hopes to one day own his own gym geared toward kids, said he wants to encourage and help other soldiers prepare for the test.

As we start going down this road for the ACFT, you need someone to be that person to make you uncomfortable, allow you to be comfortable being uncomfortable, he said.

I think being successful ... in this ACFT gives me a little bit more time in order to provide for my family, reach my goals, small goals or objectives while Im in the military and continue to be an asset to my organization, he said.

Boston Fitness Pros Agree: This Is the Biggest Fitness Trend of 2020 – Boston magazine

Fitness

As we head into the New Year, the mentality won't be "hustling" and "no days off."

Photo via Getty Images

Break out the foam rollers and grab your protein shakes2020 is all about performance recovery. While youre busy dialing in your nutrition and taking care of your mental health, give your body the TLC it deserves this year. These Boston-based fitness experts all unanimously agree: The theme for this year is slowing down. After all, we can only perform at our best when we feel our best.

1. Jaylee Oberg and Rachael Junard on: The wellness industry shift

The founders of You Good, Sis?, a collective for black and brown women looking for a mental, spiritual, and physical check-in by way of fitness events and community yoga classes, both agree: The wellness industry is shifting. As people struggle to keep up with the fast-paced and demanding approaches to fitness, I see more of an emphasis on overall wellbeing that fits into any lifestyle, Oberg says. I am so happy to see a wider range of fitness options at traditional gyms where walking clubs are being introduced by the same places that run bootcamps and high impact classes. She also anticipates dance classes will gain in popularity as a way for people to shake stress away and just be themselves. Junard adds that classes to stretch, roll, and realign the body are a great thing to see as people begin to understand the importance of cross training.

2. Cameron Ahouse on: Boston-based recovery services

It may not seem like it from his Instagram page, but EverybodyFights trainer Cameron Ahouse is all about rest and relaxation. I think people are realizing that you can train as hard as you want, but if youre not taking the time for proper recovery, then youre most likely not going to see the gains you want and you risk the chance of becoming injured, he says. This is something I have had to learn the hard way. He goes on to add that he utilizes the services offered by the stretch studio BdySqd, wearable technology Whoop, and CBD company Beam to support his active lifestyle.

3. Kenny Vertus on: Wearable technology

Boston-based personal trainer Kenny Vertus says wearable fitness devices have revolutionized the fitness industry, and he only expects them to continue to pop up. Fitness trackers, smart watches, heart rate monitors, and many more devices offer a degree of transparency about our health/fitness, he says. Were starting to see fitness studios like BKBX and Orangetheory incorporate devices into their routine allowing visitors to measure their fitness level. These devices are also able to measure your recovery level as well as sleep, making users more aware of how hard they should push it on any given day.

4. Michael McKinney on: Mindful workouts

Certified personal trainer Michael McKinney is calling the biggest trend hes predicting for 2020 mindful workouts, and he doesnt just mean yoga. Exercise is many peoples go-to stress reliever, he says. In 2020, we will see an increase in emphasizing the stress-relieving component of workouts. The amount of time we spend recovering from exercise is just as important as the amount of time spent training, and this has a direct effect on our movement and performance. This includes productive sleep, proper warm-ups and cool downs, pliability, and mobility. He adds that Boston is already seeing a lot of these options for fitness consumers, which include compression therapy boots, percussive therapy guns, and standalone assisted stretch studios.

5. Christie Wang on: Convenient fitness options

Youve probably heard of Peloton and you might even have a few dumbbells at home for those days when you just dont want to go to the gym. Pilates instructor Christie Wang says at home fitness subscriptions are only going to become more popular. As people grow more and more strapped for time, at home products like Bostons own Hydrow make fitness even more convenient, she says. Hydrow, she explains, brings the feel of outdoor rowing to your living room and also offers a plethora of mat workouts like strength training, yoga, and pilates. Even she cant ignore the shift to recovery and mindfulness though, too. Studios like BdySqd and BKBX give people opportunities to recover in state-of-the-art equipment and more workouts than ever are shifting to emphasize the mind-body connection, mindfulness, and body awareness rather than going as hard as you can.

Work off the holiday feasts at Devil’s Backbone Fitness – Northern Virginia Daily

Giving the gift of fitness this holiday season can help jump-start those New Years resolutions.

Holiday meals, time off from work and visiting family can create a sluggish start to the new year but gyms such as Devils Backbone Fitness in Strasburg have a solution and the deals to help keep the momentum moving all year long.

Tammy Esterly, the owner of Devils Backbone, said she started doing CrossFit six years ago. She said she wasnt sure if she was fit enough to start and doesnt want anyone to have that same fear when they begin their fitness journey.

One of the misconceptions is you have to be fit I have to be fit to go into that type of fitness, Esterly said. No, we are where you want to start.

Unlike other gyms, Esterly said Devils Backbone is an all-inclusive space that trades unlimited access to unlimited classes and resources. Esterly keeps her gym open seven days a week but limits the time to morning and evening classes conducted by certified coaches who are on hand to guide beginners and challenge veterans.

What makes us unique is it is a group of like-minded people coming in at our scheduled class times and working out together, she said.

Building a community within the gym is what helps most people create a habit of working out. Knowing that the gym buddy lifting weights and running next to you every day is going to notice if you arent there for a month is a motivator to keep going when the going gets tough, she said.

Walking into a gym can be a scary experience, Esterly said, because most people who want to get in shape havent ever been taught what the machines are for or how to use them. Rather than letting newcomers flounder and slip through the cracks, Devils Backbone guides small classes through workouts every day, shaping each workout to fit the needs of each member, all without paying extra for a personal trainer.

You dont have to add on to your package. You don't pay anything extra if you want a private coach, she said. Thats all part of your membership with our gym and the type of fitness we offer.

While gift certificates and free trials are available year-round, starting on Black Friday, Esterly said she is throwing in a bonus month for anyone who buys two months' worth of classes. That deal is good for anyone who walks through the door, cash in hand, or for someone who has a gift certificate they want to redeem for two months.

Devils Backbone Fitness offers three levels of membership, all with the same access but with different levels of commitment.

Month-to-month memberships dont have any contract and cost $125 a month, Esterly said. For someone who knows they want to start the year off right, a six-month contract will cost $115 a month and a 12-month contract will knock the price down to $105 a month.

Working off that turkey dinner can start with two trial classes, Esterly said.

Anybody who might want to gift themselves the gift of fitness over the holidays; if theyre not sure what we offer and what makes us a different structure than other gyms. I strongly suggest they take advantage of those trial classes, Esterly said. You have nothing to lose.

Devils Backbone Fitness is located at 105 Stony Pointe Way, Suite 120, Strasburg; 484- 332-0307.

Luxury Fitness Club Coming to Half Mile Road in 2021 – The Two River Times

By Allison Perrine | aperrine@tworivertimes.com

MIDDLETOWN A $40 million luxury sports, fitness and wellness center is coming to Half Mile Road in the Lincroft section of the township.

The 120,423-square-foot, three-story Life Time club is expected to open its doors in late 2021 at 230 and 250 Half Mile Road, between the Academy bus station and Schultz Drive. The properties are part of the Half Mile Road Redevelopment Plan adopted by the township committee in 2018.

There are a few things to know about Life Time. Lesson number one? It is nota gym.

We actually think of gym as almost a curse word, said Natalie Bushaw, senior director of public relations and internal communications. Thats because Life Time is much more than just a gym, she said. Its like the Ritz-Carlton, or todays modern country club without the golf.

She described the club as a luxurious social space in which community members can meet. Its a place where friends go to improve their fitness and where children play with their peers and improve their life skills.

Outside, members will find a ground-level outdoor beach club and bistro with leisure and lap pools, a whirlpool, resort-style seating and a caf. We might have a party on the pool deck where they have cocktails and hors doeuvres on a Saturday night, said Bushaw.

When walking through the front doors of the three-level building, members will find a caf with seating. Awaiting them upstairs will be fitness studios for group fitness, cycle, yoga and Pilates programs; personal and small training groups; and over 400 cardiovascular and resistance training equipment pieces.

The club will also include a full-service salon and spa, saunas and steam rooms, a full-size basketball court with Ultimate Hoops leagues, a Kids Academy and much more.

And the Kids Academy will be an important feature at the Middletown-based Life Time, as there is a strong family member base expected for Middletown, Bushaw said. The Kids Academy will be full of programs to encourage a healthy lifestyle, including Zumba, karate, tumbling and other activities, but also homework help, Spanish immersion and more.

To accommodate parking, a four-story parking garage will be erected adjacent to the fitness facility. It will offer 577 parking spaces for employees, members and guests to use. There will also be 11 parking spaces near the entrance of the facility.

Most Life Time club members are in their 40s, but Bushaw said there are members in age groups across the board. We have so many, what we call our Junior Executives 26 and under, she said, as well as older singles and families.

Bushaw anticipates that when the Life Time opens in Middletown, it will bring more than 250 full- and part-time jobs to the community.

By the end of 2019, there will be 150 Life Time clubs throughout the U.S. and in Canada. Its New Jersey locations are currently in Princeton, Mount Laurel, Bridgewater, Montvale, Berkeley Heights and Florham Park. When representatives look for places to establish clubs, they look for places with growing communities, strong economies and good schools. Thats what made Middletown a great location, Bushaw said.

Membership prices have not yet been determined for the Middletown location. The Bridgewater club, however, is about $159 a month for a single membership, Bushaw said. There are individual, couple, family and child memberships as well. The range then will likely be high $100s to low $400s, she said.

Life Time has been well-received in the state and the demographics and economic growth in the area make Middletown a desirable location for Life Time. Were excited for whats to come, she said.

The company will soon have a Middletown link on its website, lifetime.life, that will allow anyone interested to add their name to a membership wait list or to get more information.

Road to the 2020 Real Rider Cup: Focusing on Fitness – America’s Best Racing

Supporting Thoroughbred aftercare,The Real Rider Cupbrings riders together from all facets of the Thoroughbred industry to raise funds for aftercare. Americas Best Racing writer Melissa Bauer-Herzog is currently training for the 2020 edition of the event and is documenting her training up to next Septembers show.

While I took every chance I had to ride in October, getting on horses in three different states during a hectic month of travel, November was a different story.

Early November is almost always one of my busiest times of the year and 2019 was no different. With clients having multiple horses running in the Breeders Cup and selling at the November breeding stock sales there was barely time to sleep, let alone coordinate schedules so I could get out to ride. Add in a holiday and all of November is basically a toss for riding.

So I made a new plan for the month.

When I competed nearly every weekend as a teenager it was always drilled into my head that I should be in as good of shape as my horse, if not better. As I touched on in my last blog, I am in the opposite of good shape right now so instead of No Stirrup November (a form of equestrian bootcamp - or torture, depending on how you look at it - where riders spend the month riding without stirrups, which is much harder than it sounds) I decided to focus on Fitness November. Its not as catchy as No Stirrup November but it works.

While Im missing the part of my teenage fitness schedule that had me riding at least one horse every day, I do still have the gym part. Luckily for me, I have access to both my apartment complexs private gym and a gym I hold a membership to so there is no excuse not to go.

Getting into a go to the gym routine has been difficult, to be honest, so I embraced using the sales to at least get some exercise routine in. Sale days are almost step goal cheat days as I can often walk 10,000 steps just around the pavilion with trips to the barns adding in even more without even trying. After going from not getting in nearly the steps I should to the sale steps count, my Garmin must have thought I was in some sort of boot camp.

However, when the sales ended in mid-November I had to work harder to get in my workouts. Thankfully Im a goal-oriented person, so giving myself the goal of getting fit for the Real Rider Cup has been the kick Ive needed to do something every day.

One such method of tortu exercise is starting back on the Couch to 5K program that saw me train for a 5K in 2013 with grand plans of running a 5K in 2020. It seems great in theory but well actually see if I get that far. If nothing else, its reminding me that I can indeed run on a treadmill, something I wasnt convinced I could do without becoming a viral social media video in the past.

There is definitely a lot of work to be done both in and out of the saddle in coming months but as I get more involved in preparing for next years show, I am remembering how much I missed not only the riding side of things but having an equestrian goal to pursue even if every muscle in my body is currently convinced Im attempting to kill it.

"In 2019, the industry saw many brands try to mimic, copy or imitate what GHOST had been doing in the marketplace. However, GHOST was created on real authenticity, something that cannot be mimicked, copied or imitated."

"We are so excited and truly humbled to receive Brand of the Year honors from Fitness Informant" commented Daniel Lourenco, CEO and Founder of GHOST. "Fitness Informant is a well respected educational platform and can be tough critics; to receive such an honor from that team really means a lot to us and speaks volumes about the authenticity, innovation and quality the entire GHOST team has worked hard to bring to the market this year."

GHOST has earned more than its fair share of headlines in 2019, winning GNC's biggest award, '2019 Brand of the Year,' and releasing several of the hottest sports nutrition products of the year including authentic flavor collaborations with Sour Patch Kids Redberry, Warheads Sour Green Apple, Sonic Cherry Limeade, Welch's Grape and Chips Ahoy!.

"As my long-time friend and GHOST family member Christian Guzman would say, 'We are proud but never satisfied' stated Lourenco. "From the outset, GHOST's goal has been to consistently create and deliver authentic, innovative and exciting products and experiences for our fans. The recognition is amazing, but GHOST is only 3 years old and just getting started I can't wait for everyone to see what we are going to do next."
