New Tightsqueeze gym aims to fill need for fitness facility in county – GoDanRiver.com
TIGHTSQUEEZE Daniel Rogers had dreamed and talked about opening a gym for 15 years.
That dream became a reality three weeks ago when the 33-year-old, along with wife MaryBeth, 26, opened R3 Fitness in Tightsqueeze.
[MaryBeth] told me to either stop talking about it or do it, he said.
On their first day, 105 new customers signed up as members. Customers flocked to them from Blairs, Chatham and Gretna. A few even came from Danville.
The couple, both longtime locals who attended Chatham High School, chose the area to set up shop because of a problem they faced. For the past several years, they had to drive nearly half an hour to get to a gym.
Many of their customers faced the same experience, souring them on the idea of going to a gym at all.
Altavista has a YMCA and Danville has a number of gyms, but for the last several years there have not been many good options between the two.
We wanted to take peoples excuse away ... convenience is the biggest thing, MaryBeth Rogers said.
Adam Lumpkins, who lives in Climax, had stopped going to the gym because the closest ones were more than half an hour away from his house. Now that he is a member at R3, he can be at the gym in less than 10 minutes.
In addition to the distance, he said the gyms round-the-clock hours are a major part of the appeal.
Being able to come and go as you please is excellent, he said.
With the amount of people who work varied shifts at such companies as Goodyear, keeping the gym open 24 hours was a priority for the couple.
The name R3 which stands for three Rogers, to include their 1-year-old daughter, Claire Rogers is meant to be simple, memorable and mean something. Daniel Rogers said when people ask them what will happen when they have another child, he replies he will be excluded from the name and it will refer to his wife and children.
Another goal was for the gym to be a friendly atmosphere where everyone, even those without previous experience working out, can be comfortable.
We just wanted to make it simple and not intimidating, MaryBeth Rogers said.
In addition to their new enterprise, both work other jobs as well, with Daniel Rogers teaching drivers education and physical education at Chatham High School and MaryBeth Rogers working part time at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex.
Customer Michael Yates lives in Blairs and works in Lynchburg, so he has made a habit of going to R3 Fitness on his way to work.
Before, he had to drive in the opposite direction of his work.
Theres a lot of options, equipment wise, he said. You can hit every muscle group as good as anywhere else.
A variety of cardio machines, free weights and strength training machines fill the space in the building next to Food Lion that had been vacant for the past eight years.
With this being the first business they own, the Rogers said the custodial aspect of running a business cleaning the facility, keeping up with finances, etc. has been the biggest adjustment.
In the future, they hope to expand the operation to include space for child care and classes.
The communitys happy and thats what we care about the most, MaryBeth Rogers said.
Adam Lumpkins, who lives in Climax, said that it used to take him 35 minutes to get to the nearest gyms in Danville and Altavista. With R3 Fitness in Tightsqueeze, he can be at the gym in less than 10 minutes.
MaryBeth and Daniel Rogers said the gym has become sort of a second home for their daughter, Claire.
MaryBeth (left) and Daniel (right) Rogers sit with their 1-year-old daughter, Claire, in the office of their new gym, R3 Fitness, which is named after their three person family.
Michael Yates lifts weights at R3 Fitness, a gym that opened in Tightsqueeze three weeks ago. For him, the 24 hour access for members is the best part.
Ayers reports for the Register & Bee. Reach him at (434) 791-7981.

These Are the 8 Most Important Fitness Trends of the Year – ISPO
The conclusion for fitness centres is clear. The demands towards gym are becoming more and more individualand more specific. Studios that offer their members a wide range of services will thus be far ahead of the competition.
This diversity is also part of the Fitness Trends 2020, because those who want to increase their performance in the coming year will do so with several sports. Only strength training and jogging are out. Recently mindbody.io confirmed this insight in the annual report "Fitness in America". Yoga, Zumba, Spinning, Aerobics, Crossfit, HIIT, Kickboxing, Pilates, Martial Arts are among the most popular sports that Americans do in gyms. This trend is sloshing more and more into Germany.
The fitness enthusiast wants to use all body parts and muscles comprehensively. And if possible improve his mental well-being. Industry experts assume that basics such as workouts, swimming lessons and cycling will be part of every gym's offering. If you want to be one of the hottest locations, it is best to have yoga, dance and meditation classes available.

Fitness Model Found Shot In The Head, Repeatedly Stabbed In Her Home – Oxygen
A 23-year-old Mexican fitness model was found brutally murdered in her Tijuana home Sunday night.
Alondra Getsemani Villaseor had been shot in the head and stabbed several times, according to the Herald of Mexico.
Her body was discovered by her mother, who had gone to check on her daughter after she was unable to reach her on the phone.
Authorities believe that Villaseorwho had worked at a local gym and as a fitness modelhad been dead for more than 24 hours when she was discovered.
Investigators found a 9-millimeter cap and two small bags that contained what appeared to be marijuana at the scene, according to Notimex.
Witnesses reported seeing someone in a red vehicle flee the area; however, no arrests have been made in the case as of yet.
Villaseors Facebook page is filled with images of happier times as the 23-year-old worked out at the gym or happily posed around the city.
Her death is the latest in a string of murders of women in the area, the Herald of Mexico reports.
Tijuana has seen almost 1,800 murders this year, according to a report earlier this month from The Guardian that called Tijuana one of the worlds most deadly cities. In 2018, the number of murders reached 2,518.
Experts have speculated that much of the violence canbe attributed to a dispute about Tijuanas drug trade.
Its devastating what is happening here, a man who asked to remain anonymous told the news outlet. It is out of control.

These Are the Top 10 Fitness Trends for 2020 – Bicycling
Its that time of year again, when the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) polls thousands of health and fitness professionals around the globe to peer into the crystal ball and identify the top fitness trends for the following year.
This is the 14th year for the ACSM survey, and many of the hot trends, such as HIIT and group training, for 2020 have been along for the ride since the beginning. Cyclists have been at the pointy end of fitness trends like HIIT training, wearable tech, and employing certified professionals since long before such surveys existed. But its worth noting that there are other consistent (and important) trends more cyclists would be wise to hop on.
So without further ado, here are the top 10 fitness trends for 2020 and what they mean for you.
[Want to fly up hills? Climb! gives you the workouts and mental strategies to conquer your nearest peak.]
Hiring a fitness professional debuted on the trend list at #6 last year, and holds its position in the top 10 for 2020. For cyclists, this means hiring a coachsomething I recommend all serious cyclists try at least once.
Ive been USA Cycling certified coach myself for about two decades and I still hire a coach to help me nail my goals. And I can say unequivocally, all of my best results are a direct result of working with and listening to some really great coaches.
Good coaches do more than just write training plansyou can download those online for a few bucks. Theyre a confidante, someone you can share your goals and insecurities with who will help you cut through the clutter and be the best bike rider you can be. They eliminate the guesswork and make you accountable for getting your training done.
And coming in at #9more coaching! Health and wellness coaching is different from cycling coaching in that its not focused on exercise performance, but rather helping you live a healthier life overall.
Wellness coaches can help you deal with stress, improve your mindset, find balance, and make healthy lifestyle changes (say, like riding more) stick.
Only you can say if you would benefit from a health and wellness coach (and its possible that a multi-faceted cycling coach could pull double duty here). But if you consistently struggle to make behavioral changes that would improve your emotional and physical well-being, it might be worth a try.
No surprise here. People are living longer and remaining active for many more years than past generations. And the more fit you stay into your later years, the more years youre likely to live. One study found that those with the highest levels of fitness at age 75 were more than twice as likely to live another 10 years or more compared to those with poorer fitness.
Because cycling is gentle on the joints, its easy to do for a very long time. But thats not to say that we dont face challenges with age. Science shows that metabolism changes, making it easier to gain weight and lose muscle, as we get older. Recovery takes longer, too. That means you need to keep up the intensity to maintain muscle and top-end fitness, and take proper care to bounce back from those efforts. So if youre in your 50s, 60s, 70s, or beyond, make sure the trainers and/or coaches you work with understand the nuances of working with someone your age.

Bodyweight training, which, just as it sounds, means using your own body to perform resistance training has been among the top trends since it hit the charts at #3 in 2013. And with good reason: You dont need a gym membership or special equipment to build strength, and you can get a good workout wherever you are.
Body weight training is particularly helpful for cyclists during prime riding season, when you may be reluctant to use precious riding time to go to the gym. Some push-ups, squats, and core moves can help keep you strong in the saddle without worrying about hitting the weights.
Exercise is Medicine (EIM) is a global health initiative that encourages primary care doctors and other health-care providers to include physical activity assessment as part of their care and to include exercise recommendations and referrals to fitness professionals as part of standard care.
A doctors note for a bike ride a day? Sounds like good medicine to us.

Its easy to be a little skeptical about personal training being the top trend (as it has been since the survey first published in 2006) on a list generated by fitness professionals. But personal training works, and it continues to evolve overtime to meet changing demands.
For cyclists, a few sessions with a personal trainer can help you feel comfortable and confident in your off-season strength training and in-season maintenance work. Today, mobile apps make personal training more effective and efficient than ever. You can meet with your trainer to do your assessments and cover the basics. Then, you can do the rest via fitness apps like True Coach that allow you to track progress, communicate with your trainer, and watch videos of exercises you cant remember when youre at the gym and your trainer isnt around.

Training with free weights like barbells, kettlebells, dumbbells, and medicine balls is a hot and growing trend right now, largely thanks to the rising popularity of functional and CrossFit style workouts and gyms.
World-class professional cyclists like Kate Courtney and Peter Sagan have put to rest any worries that weight training and cycling dont mix. Free weights recruit all your major and minor muscles, improve your balance and proprioception, and help build boneall things that will make you better on your bike.
Technically defined as more than five participants, group training is just that: a group of people led through a fitness routine by an instructor. The idea is to motivate people to move by making exercise fun and social.
Cyclists are all about that. In fact, we love group training so much we even have a special word for a pack of us: peloton, which not coincidentally is the name of one of the most popular group training workouts on the planet. If you tend to be a lone wolf on the bike, try a group ride for 2020. Youll be glad you did.

HIIT, which is a workout that involves short bursts of high intensity exercise followed by a short period of rest, has been a chart-topper since 2014, when it was the #1 trend of the year. HIIT doesnt just make you fit, but also boosts brain health, tames stress, improves body composition, and fends off a host of chronic diseases.
As a cyclist, you should absolutely be doing HIIT training. Even if you never sprint for a finish line in your life, HIIT training will help boost your endurance performance so every ride feels easier and you can hum along longer and stronger without hitting the wall.

If you heard the news that Google is buying Fitbit for a cool $2.1 billion, it will come as no surprise that wearable technology is the #1 fitness trend for 2020. Wearable technology includes fitness trackers, smart watches, heart rate monitors, and GPS tracking devices. Its a $95 billion industry and shows no signs of slowing.
Cyclists, of course, are not new to any of this. Weve been routinely strapping on heart rate monitors since Kurt Cobain was singing about teen spirit and wont roll out of the parking lot without recording the ride. Were also early adopters to new cutting-edge wearable tech like the Whoop Strap, which dig further into our physiology to track heart rate variability, sleep, and recovery.
If youve never tried wearable tech, and well, Im not sure theres one of you out there, its well worth investing in at least a heart rate monitor, which not only can help you track your training progress, but also can alert you to underlying health issues before they cause trouble.

How to Lock Down Your Health and Fitness Data – WIRED
Unlike Apple Health, you can uninstall Google Fit from your phone if you want to make sure it's not collecting any data. If you're logging data from a connected Wear OS smartwatch and want to stop this from happening, meanwhile, open the Fit app, scroll down to Settings, then tap Sign out.
Fitbit
It's not clear what Google's acquisition of Fitbit means for your Fitbit or Google Fit data. But now you can open the Fitbit app on your phone or Fitbit on the web to manage what it collects. You can read Fitbit's privacy policy here.
If you use Fitbit, you have a profile page, which your friends can see if you link up with them. In fact, anyone with a Fitbit account can see it if they're looking specifically for you. To manage what's visible on this profile through the app, tap your avatar on the top left, then Privacy, then choose what's public and what's private.
Back on the previous screen you can select Manage data to do just that: pick Manage third-party apps, and you can disconnect anything that's been hooked up to Fitbit and that can access the health and fitness data that you're logging.
The other option here is Delete account, which, as you might expect, wipes everything you've ever done with Fitbit from the record, including from Fitbit's servers. If you're really worried about what Google might be planning in terms of data collection and targeted advertising, this is one of the options you might be weighing.
You don't get any options for restricting what Fitbit can track, or for deleting just certain categories of data: It's all or nothing. Once you've set up a Fitbit tracker or smartwatch, it'll track everything unless you remove it from the Fitbit app entirely.
Fitbit includes quite a few social features for challenging your friends and sharing your goals and achievements with other people. To manage the people you're connected toand the people who can see the data you're sharingin the Fitbit app tap your avatar, then your name. From there you can remove or block friends.
Strava
Like Fitbit, Strava encourages social sharing and community interaction, so you need to think about what other people can see in terms of your running routes and your daily step counts, as well as the information that Strava is gathering. You can view the full Strava privacy policy here.
As soon as you open the Strava app, you'll see the Following tab, where you can manage the friends, colleagues, and random acquaintances who are keeping tabs on your activities in Strava. From the same screen you can stop these people from following you and block them from trying to follow you in the future.

The Best Fitness Gifts: ClassPass Forecasts The Top Workout Trends And Products For 2020 – Forbes
Fritz Lanman and Payal Kadakia of ClassPass
Whether youre a die-hard loyalist to your current gym (in fact, half your closet consists of their merch) or prefer hopping from studio to studio (Liftonic today, BollyX tomorrow), its always helpful to know the latest trends in exercise, wellness and health.
ClassPasspartners with more than 25,000 boutique studios and gyms worldwide to create their monthly subscription, so its safe to say the company has their pulse on whats trending across every corner of the fitness industry. This year, the startup added wellness experiences to its membership offerings, including massages, meditation, saunas, cryotherapy and more.
We met with Payal Kadakia, founder and chairman ofClassPass, and Fritz Lanman, CEO, to get their insider perspective on the future of fitness and wellnessand the biggest trends we should expect in 2020.
More thanone in three business travelers worldwidewill add at least one personal component to a business trip this year, and more companies are addingwellness programsto their benefits suites. The convergence of these two trends means that its easier to stay fit while traveling for both work and leisure. Its also a fantastic way to explore a new city.
Attending boutique fitness classes anywhere from Singapore to London to Memphis is one of my favorite ways to experience the unique flavor of a city, said Kadakia. Its not only fun; its also a great way to see new parts of the city, connect with locals and studio owners and learn about cool new trends that are emerging in one part of the world but havent yet made their way to LA or NY.
BEIS
The water-resistant fabric lining and bottom shoe compartment will make it easier for you to pack your gym essentials for your next work trip or getaway.
High-intensity interval training sessions are some of the trendiest classes of the year.ClassPassdata shows that HIIT classes, as well as boxing classes and strength training, have climbed the charts in popularity both before and after work.
Megaformer Pilates is also a growing trend. The zero-impact, full-body workout involves taking as few reps as possible without a break in order to focus on strength, balance and alignment. So far in 2019,ClassPassusers have already attended over a million megaformer classes, marking a 38.6% year-over-year increase in reservations at studios such as BodyRokandCore40.
Tory Sport
Inspired by gym uniforms from the 1970s, Tory Sport's latest activewear (which was unveiled at a fashion meets fitness workout at NYFW 2019) is lightweight and designed for low to medium-impact workouts. The cross-back allows for a full-range of motion for pilates or boxing workouts yet maintains support.
Dont be surprised in 2020 if more of your friends suggest meeting up for a boxing class before brunch.
Also, the gym is no longer just a quick stop between work and home. Group classes have now replaced happy hour as the perfect opportunity to catch up with friends in a healthier setting, and data proves that social workouts keep you accountable.People are 26% less likely to cancel a workout if it means inconveniencing a friend and are 25% more likely to test out a new type of exercise if they bring a friend along, says Lanman. His team has added new social features to the ClassPass app that make it easy toshare completed workouts with friends and plan new classes together.
Whether youre competing against a friend in an intense 45-minute cycling class at the Peloton studio or gritting your teeth through an OrangeTheory class, working out has become social.
Society 9
Wrapping up your hands then lacing up your gloves can eat up time. These gloves come with "Lace and Loops" which are designed to allow you to self-lace your own boxing gloves so that you can make it to work on time.
More gyms and studios are taking active steps to help people of all ages and fitness levels reach their goals and feel included and good about themselves while doing so.
When I startedClassPassyears ago, boutique fitness classes were a new trend, so most of the people who attended them were fitness enthusiasts like myself, says Kadakia. Today, independent fitness studios and many gyms are broadening their offerings so that everyone of every age, body type and fitness level feels encouraged and supported.
If youre just getting started on your fitness journey, consider looking for an impactful but welcoming class such as yoga or consider a class like trampolining that will feel more like play and less like work. Theres a class out there for everyone.
Lululemon
This featherweight, breathable top is completely seamless to keep you comfy and prevent chafing. You dont need to worry about your sweat or scent, since it features technology to prevent odor-causing bacteria from forming on the shirt.
Long gone are the days when people adhered to the same, structured fitness routine day in and day out. ClassPassdata shows that a majority of its members attend at least ten different studios and gyms within their first year. People are more likely than ever to engage in a range of activities because they want their workouts to feel fun, dynamic and less like workouts, commented Lanman.
Create & Cultivate
Stay on top of your goals and keep all your meetups and workouts organized in a planner. This 2020 calendar includes a #BOSSboard section where you can brainstorm and sketch your plans after a creativity-sparking workout.
Its increasingly popular to take a midday class, according toClassPassdata. With workplaces relaxing their lunch policies and more people working remotely, lunchtime workouts are on the rise, especially at workplaces that offer convenient on-site options orcorporate wellness benefits.
The always-on generation is pushing back and saying I that may always be online, but that doesnt mean Im always reachable. If you want me to perform my best, I need the freedom to escape for a quick midday refreshbe it in the form of yoga, HIIT or power cycling, said Kadakia.
Two added benefits are making this trend more viable: 1) an increase in workplaces permitting relaxed wardrobes, and 2) an increase in studios offering shorter express classes so members have the opportunity to work out, eat and still be back at their desk within an hour. Many of this years popular new gyms offer classes that are only 45 minutes in length; and in fact platform-wideClassPassusers were 33% more likely to book a 45-minute or shorter class in 2018 than they were in 2017.
Everlane
If you work out before or in the middle of your workday, the work clothes you wear are just as important as your workout ensemble. Youll need low-maintenance yet appropriate office staples that are easy to slip in and out of. These pants are made of comfortable four-way stretch cotton, yet have a side zipper and seam details that add a touch of polish to your outfit.
For decades, gyms and exercise equipment providers and studios focused on one singular component of fitness: weight loss. Today, mainstream fitness goals are as multifaceted as the people working toward them.
Just as every soul is different, so are their needs for nourishment. Ive met tons ofClassPassmembers who work out to overcome health issues, breakups and even unbelievable grief, said Kadakia. Their stories inspire us and fuel our excitement about coming to work every day. We expect more fitness entrepreneurs and instructors to design classes and experiences that help people to find the physical and emotional balance they seekwhether its to cope with a bad boss, spark some creativity or to train for their next Iron Man.
Rhone
Your workout is a great time for digital detoxing. But if you aren't ready to leave your phone at home or even in your locker, Rhone makes workout shorts for men that are designed with a front media pocket that fits most small and medium-size phones. Put your phone away and find balance during your next workout.

17 Photos Of Former WWE Divas In Fitness Gear We Can’t Stop Staring At – TheThings
Exiting the WWE isnt the end of the road. In this day and age, a lot of the talent thrive without the company; it isnt like the early 2000s anymore. When it comes to Divas, some are thriving with other wrestling companies like AEW or Impact, while others are now making a living by other means, totally outside of the pro wrestling realm.
In this article, well feature former WWE Divas that clearly havent given up when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle, especially inside the gym and surely, with the diet aspect as well. We just cant stop looking at these pictures; lets just say these former WWE Divas are in fine form.
Enjoy the article folks and like always, be sure to share it with a friend. Lets get started!
We just couldnt help ourselves; Torrie is one of the few with two stunning photos on this list. Her IG account is littered with photos in fitness attire.
Wilson is a fitness enthusiast these days and it is remarkable as to how little she has aged over the years.
She retired from WWE at an early age. She would pursue a career in the fitness industry instead, starting her own brand and clothing line.
Without a doubt, she isnt skipping squat day and yeah, she knows how to rock a pair of yoga pants. However, shes back to wrestling tights these days back on the independent scene, hoping to make a WWE return.
Another ageless wonder, it's unbelievable to think that Trish is set to turn 44 in December. Given her recent WWE run, fans that didnt know Trish would think she was still in her early 30s.
The work ethic remains quite strong out of the ring and oh yeah, shes also a mother to two kids.
Just like Kaitlyn, Rosa recently returned to the wrestling ring. She wants to set an example for her daughter which is certainly admirable.
Shes rocking the Gym Shark gear in the pic above and like her app, we can definitely say that Rosa if one Fit Mama.
With CM Punk back in WWE, well, at least through FOX, rumors are now starting to swirl that AJ might be next.
Given the content on her IG account, shes definitely keeping in great shape despite the career change. She also has everyone drooling while she performs some tough pull-ups.
She wanted to enter the ring but WWE was hesitant. She didnt want to be strictly a ring announcer, so Brandi decided to leave the company alongside Cody.
We can say for sure that the decision worked out and then some. Brandi is a pivotal part of AEW at the moment, especially backstage. And oh, she sure knows how to rock workout gear.
She didnt have the best WWE run. Cameron is remembered for a lot of her blunders like pinning an opponent the opposite way.
Nonetheless, shes doing great in her post-WWE life, working as a talk show host. She also has some great fitness content via IG.
She recently left WWE which is so unfortunate. Kacy had such a bright future, her agility in the ring was something else.
No doubt, shell continue with her training despite leaving WWE. Whatever she does post-WWE, we can safely say that shell thrive without any hesitation. And who knows, maybe she might find herself back in WWE one day.
McMahon wasnt into Gail and ultimately given her post-WWE career, hes eating his words. Kim thrived with Impact and she should be considered among the elite of the 2000s.
Like lots of others on this list, Kim is an ageless wonder looking better and better like a fine wine year after year.
It was a failed gimmick that really sunk Emma. Following the failed Emmalina run, Tenille Dashwood was never the same.
Shes keeping the dream alive with Impact Wrestling these days. She hasnt missed a workout either, as evidenced by the photo above. Maybe shell find her way back to WWE at some point.
It was quite the treat for WWE fans as Stacy finally returned, inducting her best friend Torrie Wilson, into the WWE.
It was pretty evident, she hasnt aged a day and remains in phenomenal shape as well. Shes enjoying the family life these days away from the spotlight.
She had the persona to thrive, unfortunately for Summer, she was never slotted properly during her time on the main roster.
Shes still incredibly fit and if the pic above isnt enough, take a quick scroll down her IG account for more stunning photos. Summer is also very active at wrestling conventions.
All red everything is no more as Eva once again changed her hair color, going for a purple look these days. No matter what the hair color or style, Marie always has our attention, especially when it comes to anything fitness related.
She continues to tease a return to the ring fans are likely split on how they feel.
She was an underrated part of the Divas era. Torres became a big fan favorite and she brought it in the ring as well.
Torres left the business running her own self-defense class, empowering women around the world. She started a family, yet still looks to be in fine form. A final WWE run definitely isnt out of the question.
We include another Kaitlyn shot. She knows all about fitness attire, running her own brand following the WWE exit.
She appeared in the Mae Young Classic and we hope she gets another chance to shine on the WWE platform. For the time being, shell continue to work her craft on the indie scene.
One more pic featuring the ageless wonder, Torrie Wilson. Following the WCW merger, lots of stars from the company sank to the bottom, Wilson on the other hand absolutely thrived and she ultimately forged a Hall of Fame-worthy career. Well never forget those backstage skits and gimmicky matches from the early 2000s.
It was only fitting to end the article off with a Trish pic taken recently inside the squared circle. Trish hasnt aged a day and this picture is just further proof of that.
Her match against Charlotte seemed like a last hurray, though some fans believe she has one left in the tank, perhaps against Alexa Bliss.

Fitness corner: In November, my thoughts turn to men’s health – MLT News
Dan Potts and trainer Elston Cloy supporting Movember.
When November rolls around every year, I think a lot more about gratitude. Thanksgiving has a way of reminding us how much we have to be grateful for, and I often find myself telling people Im thankful for you and that sort of thing.
And when Movember rolls around every year, I think about my late husband Dan Potts even more than usual and, consequently, the importance of mens health.
Movember was created to bring awareness and attention to mens health in the month of November. Not just diseases such as prostate and testicular cancer, but also mens mental health and suicide prevention. You can show your support for this movement by growing facial hair, and/or raising or giving money for mens health in the month of November. We all have husbands, sons, brothers, fathers, cousins, grandsons and friends that deserve to be supported in living long and healthy lives. Men, you deserve it. A highly worthy cause, in my opinion.
Which reminds me, take a moment to be grateful for the men you love, right now, while they are here and all is well. Trust me.
Prostate cancer took my husband Dans life in 2104. Yet you never saw anyone live so courageously during the 16 years he fought it. It wasnt until the last year of his life that you ever would have known he was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer 15 years earlier.
Dan was the person you looked at and couldnt believe he of all people could have cancer. Years of weight lifting had made his veins quite prominent. Nurses and techs for years oohed and aahed at how easy it was to draw blood and insert IVs. (By the end those veins were destroyed, when they often had to bring in the expert nurses to find any vein in his arm or hand in which to insert a needle.)
Dans lifelong commitment to health and fitness was obvious. He ate well, he exercised, he was resilient and he was athletic and energetic. Yet cancer turns all of our beliefs about health upside down. Cancer patients just as healthy as Dan have lost their lives much sooner than he did. Cancer patients much less healthy than he have gone into remission for years or forever. It feels like there is no rhyme or reason to how cancer and treatment impacts each patient.
However, I strongly believe that Dans care for himself throughout his life was demonstrated in his longevity and resistance not just to the cancer, but to the endless treatments he endured. I cant help but feel that his physical and mental strength and his tremendous spirit and sense of humor carried him through all those years of surgeries, radiation, chemotherapy, hormone-blockers and various drug regimens. I wont go into how he was physically impacted by all of this; its worse than you can imagine. Regardless, we loved each other and laughed together every single day. I marveled at his energy, witnessing him give every day to his clients, athletes, friends and family. And to me.
I know widows whose husbands died of aggressive prostate cancer in a matter of months or a year or two after diagnosis. I am so fortunate that Dan did not. My gratitude for the time he and I had with each other can never be quantified. As I reflect on my life with Dan, I am not sad, nor angry or bitter. I am so very thankful. I am the person that I am today because of his love and support, and I was privileged to love and support him.
Dans cards, letters and notes to me are among my most precious possessions, and I dont think he would mind if I shared some of his words with you:
I love you so very much, and I know and feel in my heart, what you have done for me. Our growth this year has been enormous. I love and look forward to each night. Thank you for the love you give from your heart! Heres looking to 30 more years. I love you, Dan.
We didnt get 30 years, but we got eight. Forever grateful, especially when Movember rolls around.
That man in your life, whoever he is? Or they are? Or perhaps its you? His health is very, very important. Please support him however you can.

Can You Pass the New Army Combat Fitness Test Without Training? – ClearanceJobs
Last month we published an article about the Army Combat Fitness Test. Specifically, it outlined how leaked results from the Armys initial test period showed 84% of women are currently failing the test. The same contributor had written about the Army Combat Fitness test in the past how it would impact the Guard and Reserve, and also how the new test was complicating a system that has always been pretty straightforward (its not hard to misinterpret a test based on a run, sit-ups and push-ups add in a host of new elements and equipment, and things get more complicated).
Each of those posts did well, but there was something about the spotlight on how women were performing on the test that set off a firestorm of debate and comments we received more than 700 comments from readers about the ACFT. After personally reading each of them, its clear the U.S. Army (or internet trolls) is passionate about fitness.
Im an Army girl I worked for the Office of the Chief of Public Affairs, spent significant time at a number of Army installations, and am the daughter of a U.S. Army Vietnam War vet. One of my favorite military bloggers once noted we all have our favorite flavor of military ice cream and despite the fact that my husband spent years working for the Air Force and I now live outside of Offutt Air Force Base my favorite flavor will always be Army green.
The thought of putting on my Hooah pride and taking the ACFT intrigued me even if my chances of failure seemed pretty high. Ive had four kids, and running late is my typical cardio. But I love a challenge, and with so much divisiveness and contention surrounding the test, I wanted to see how I could stack up.
Calling in a certified fitness trainer and with the help of a CrossFit-esque gym, I put the test, to the test. Did I fail? Absolutely. Did I have fun doing it? You bet. The amount of equipment required for the test certainly stands out right away. Critics have argued its not an easy test to train for in that respect and Ill agree. That said, Ive never pulled a sleigh in my life (other than pulling my kids up the hill on a snow day), and I was able to pass all aspects of the Sprint-Drag-Carry with ease (I equated the kettlebell carry to carrying two tired toddlers home after a long day at the zoo been there, done that). Another criticism that I can agree with is the difficulty in scoring the test. The deadlift is more of a squat, as my trainer pointed out. And what makes for a perfect hand release push-up? I certainly dont know.
My nemesis was the same exercise that foiled the vast majority of women and even quite a few men the leg tuck. After four kids, my core strength is obviously a bit out of shape. All the yoga in the world will not get your legs up to your elbows without some upper body strength. And here is where the gender divide starts I obviously have less upper body strength than all of those guys skipping leg day at Golds Gym (you know who you are).
Could I train my way into passing the test? I think so, and I might try. Or I might go to Starbucks and drink my second peppermint mocha of the day. Its hard to say. Im also not going to take an official stance on the test the U.S. Army may be my favorite flavor, but this isnt my test. I trust those in uniform to weigh in, and I can count on Army leadership to change (or lower!) the standards if they decide they need to.
