Planet Fitness Breaks Out Into Buy Zone On Strong Q2, Raised Outlook – Investor’s Business Daily
Fitness-center operator Planet Fitness (PLNT) jumped into buying territory Thursday, a day after lifting full-year guidance after topping second-quarter forecasts.
XAutoplay: On | OffEstimates: Earnings per share of 19 cents, up 12%, on revenue of $102 million, also up 12%.
Results:EPS of 22 cents on revenue of $107.3 million. System-wide same-store sales climbed 9%, asfranchisee-owned comps increased 9.3% and corporate-owned comps grew 4.3%.
Outlook: Full-year EPS is now seen at 76-78 cents, up from a prior view of 74-77 cents, on revenue of$409 million-$415 million, up from$405 million-$415 million. Analysts see EPS of 77 cents on revenue of $415 million. Planet Fitness sees same-store sales up 8%-9% vs. a prior view of 7%-8% growth.
Stock:Shares jumped 9% to close at 25.13 on the stock market today, clearing a 24.68 entry from a flat base.
Planet Fitness has made a name for itself by being a less-intimidating, less-judgmental place to exercise. And as malls empty and retailers shutter stores, fitness centers like Planet Fitness, which have avoided the Amazon (AMZN) threat and other retail difficulties, have been more likely to appear in their place.
But Planet Fitness's higher-end, niche rivals have grown quickly, a Wedbush research note in June said, posing a risk to the chain. However, Planet Fitness owners told Wedbush they weren't concerned with the industry trends.
"Our contacts believe that in the current environment as targeted niche chains are divvying up the high-end of the market while (Planet Fitness) goes after the less avid fitness consumer and those without gym memberships, traditional gyms are getting squeezed," the note said.
The note also said that many Planet Fitness owners and managers that Wedbush spoke with said that they believed more room for growth existed, potentially outside the Northeast, where Planet Fitness was founded. However, the people said "the best locations are increasingly fewer and farther between."

Fitness, nutrition key to Brooks Koepka’s meteoric rise in the world of golf – CBSSports.com
Brooks Koepka is having probably the best season of his professional golf career. He has a U.S. Open win to his name, two other second-place finishes, six total top 10s and an average finish of 6th in the three major championships. He's also a trendy pick to win the 2017 PGA Championship.
Koepka, who honed his craft at the beginning of his career in Europe, has always driven the ball well, but other parts of his game (like his putting) are getting better. He credits a well-rounded game with better fitness and nutrition than he maintained in college or on the European Tour.
"Once I came back to the [United] States, I was like, 'Finally, let's do this,'" said Koepka. "'You can be in the gym every day.' And I tried to build some muscle and make sure I'm healthy."
Koepka noted that he has a chef for the majors, and though he sometimes struggles with diet, he recognizes its importance in his future.
"He cooks for me," Koepka said of his chef. "It's something I need to watch and take care of. You're trying to eat healthy. On the road, you can get kind of sloppy with it."
Koepka, who is often compared to Dustin Johnson in on-course temperament and success, also works out with D.J. off the course. They are both trained by Joey Diovisalvi ("Joey D").
"It's kind of a fun little training scenario," said Koepka. "It is [competitive] for me. I don't know about him, but it is for me. Any time we've got a leg day, he's pushing me. We're trying to push each other."
"With somebody like Brooks, you have a NFL player profile -- ability, athleticism, body type," added Diovisalvi. "You have an athlete that literally comes prepared to say, 'I'm here to work.' He asks great questions, but he never questions what we do. Great athletes do that naturally."
Koepka said he actually just started training with Joey D. before the U.S. Open, but he has already seen dividends (like, you know, winning the U.S. Open).
"I'm stronger, a lot more flexible," said Koepka. "More functional."
An enhanced Koepka is a scary thought for the future. He takes with him loads of talent into his late 20s and early 30s and could pretty easily become a multiple-time major winner before hitting his true prime. He's already forever off the tee, and as he starts owning the learning curve, it takes to win on the PGA Tour and folding in a world-class fitness routine, Koepka could establish himself alongside Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and others as one of the best players of this generation.

Samsung’s next fitness watch is probably coming this month – The Verge
Samsung is headed to IFA later this month, and its starting to sound like well see some new smartwatches there. Android Headlines spotted an FCC filing from Samsung showing off a Samsung Gear Sport, a thus-far nonexistent smartwatch or fitness device of some kind.
Given that its passing through the FCC right now, the device is probably almost ready to be released. Samsung used its IFA presentation to introduce a new generation of Gear smartwatches this time last year, so it makes sense that were seeing hints of that happening again this year, too.
All we really know so far is that the Gear Sport supports Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and probably runs Tizen, given the lack of Galaxy branding. Its not clear if itll take the shape of a smartwatch or be closer to a long fitness tracker, but the most recent Gear devices have all had identical round shapes. The last Gear-branded fitness band was released just over a year ago.
A sports-focused watch would make plenty of sense. Apple has really refocused the Apple Watch around fitness, while Samsungs Gear watches are still going for a much more fashionable look. Making a new model thats more tailored to exercise would help it better compete with Apple and could get more people interested in the product.
If Samsung does release a sports-focused watch, it wouldnt be surprising to see it introduce other styles of the devices as well. But so far, we havent seen anything on it.

Reebok petitions Academy to award Oscar for ‘Best Fitness Trainer … – Fox News
On John Baileys first day as the new president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Reebok president Matt OToole wrote himan open letter, shared via Twitter.
The message was not a congratulatory note from one head honcho to another, but instead a passionate proposal for creating a new Academy Award to honor the unsung heroes behind the silver screen: fitness trainers.
Noting that Oscars have long been given for Best Makeup and Hairstyling as well as Best Sound Mixing, OToole makes a provocative argument for celebrating the craft of fitness through the individuals who guide actors into "fighting, flying and filming shape."
FITNESS TRAINER CLAPS BACK AT BODY SHAMER BY SHARING IMPORTANT MESSAGE
These people often hail from outside the glitz of Hollywood. Theyve crafted their expertise on the playing field, in their garage gyms and even defending our country, OToole said. He added that their backgrounds have not led them down the traditional path to show business, but their skills are indispensable nonetheless, in that they propel the actors to stardom and success.
Ask any motion picture star and they will tell you, these are the people who power the scenes and stories fans love so much, he said. The best scenes and storylines today often require amazing physical transformations, and actors and actresses rely heavily on a small field of expert trainers to get them in fighting, flying and filming shape.

In a day and age when self-made fitness gurus and stars ride a wave of popularity across Instagram, Snapchat and other visual social media, OTooles proposition is certainly intriguing.
And with the 2018 Oscars months away, the Academy has ample time to decide whether or not to recognize this community in the future.
John Bailey has not yet appeared to issue a response to O'Toole.

Plymouth business offers traditional fitness, circus arts training – Citizens Voice

Riot Circus Arts owner, Kayla Dyches, works out on an ariel ring at her new business on Main Street in Plymouth, where she provides circus training. Dyches formerly suffered from anorexia as a gymnast in her late teens and early 20s and the circus "saved her life."Mark Morancv10dychesp4
MARK MORAN / STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER Riot Circus Arts owner, Kayla Dyches, works out on an ariel silk at her business on Main Street in Plymouth, where she provides training, health, fitness and event services.
Kayla Dyches, who can climb more than 40 feet on aerial silks, says becoming a circus arts performer saved her life.
Dyches, 33, suffered from anorexia as a gymnast in her late teens and early 20s and, at her lightest, she weighed 90 pounds.
When she wanted to become an aerialist years ago, her trainers told her she needed to eat and take care of herself to be strong enough to do it.
This was enough inspiration for me to actually change my eating habits and get stronger and get out of that rut so that I could actually excel here, Dyches said.
Dyches, who is formerly from Alabama and now lives in Wyoming, recently opened Riot Circus Arts in a former Methodist church at 236 W. Main St., Plymouth. She moved the business from its former location on Rutter Avenue in Kingston.
Riot Circus Arts offers training, health, fitness and event services.
Some people take classes as a hobby or to become more physically fit and some are interested in a career in circus arts, she said.
We fit everyones needs, Dyches said. Whether youre trying to get in shape or if youre looking to get a job on a cruise ship or get a job in a show, well help you get there.
While the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus has come to an end after a run of 146 years, she said there are several other opportunities for performers such as Cirque du Soleil and Cirque loize.
Jobs are available for circus acts on cruise ships, and at casinos, hotels, theme parks and festivals around the world.
You have so many shows and options all over the world, Dyches said. Ive been offered contracts in Monaco and Dubai and casinos. There is work, but you have to actually do the work and get to a certain level to excel and get to those positions.
Riot Circus Arts is unique in the area and Dyches was attracted to the Plymouth building because of its high ceilings.
Our ceilings here are 42 feet and Ill climb as high as you want me to go, said Dyches, who also showed stunts she could do on an aerial ring. The great thing about old churches is no one really has a use for vertical space but I do.
Classes at Riot Circus Arts range from the beginner level to advanced, with guest instructors from all over the world, Dyches said.
The classes allow students to learn about everything from aerial silks and aerial rings to flexibility contortion. The business also offers standard fitness classes and Mommy and me classes.
The building also can be rented for events such as birthday parties and bachelorette parties, she said.
Some students have been taking classes for a few years and she recently began training younger girls with dance backgrounds who are interested in careers in the circus arts, she said.
Im trying to fill classes and bring a legit circus training facility to the area, she said.
Plymouth Alive, a group which promotes the borough and tries to bring businesses to the downtown area, recently welcomed Riot Circus Arts to town.
Its an added benefit that a specialty business like this can utilize the high ceilings in a church that would otherwise remain empty, said Plymouth Alive member Scott Cannon. Weve had a good amount of needed growth in the past year and are looking forward for more.

Fitness trainer claps back at body shamer by sharing important … – Fox News
Sadly, the internet is full of body-shamers looking to tear others down. But one woman is standing up to her critic with an important message.
Fitness trainer and motivational speaker Jessi Kneeland posted a photo of herself on Instagram Monday, which shows her stretching at the gym.
Oh hey there, have you met my fancy fat? It's these pretty dimples along the back of my legs and butt, she wrote in the post, referring to the cellulite visible on her thigh. Some people think fancy fat is 'bad,' and will try to convince you to get rid of yours, but we know better. Fancy fat is just a natural, healthy, built-in decoration. (Or at least that's how I choose to see it), she continued.
As a body image coach, Kneeland encourages her followers to rethink societys beauty standards. There is absolutely nothing objectively true about statements like cellulite is ugly or perfectly smooth and toned is more attractive. Those are just examples of a social reality we pass along to each other so often, that our brains start to believe they must be true, they're natural, or they're just the way things are. But they're not. We can change the way we see things by interrupting those old thoughts, challenging and examining them, noticing how they affect us, changing what we expose ourselves to, and finding new beliefs that affect us in a more positive way, Kneeland wrote.
Many of the comments on Kneelands post were positive, with people telling her how inspiring her words were. However one man felt differently. Spin it anyway u want, having unhealthy body fat like that is not natural; its because u eat or used to eat s----y food and ur body has stored it! he wrote. Stop eating s--t food and burn more calories that u put in ur face and it will go! he wrote.
HILARY DUFF TAKES ON BODY SHAMERS BY SHOWING 'CELEB FLAWS'
But Kneeland didnt let the hurtful comment get her down, and many of her followers jumped to her defense. In response, on Tuesday the trainer posted a mirror selfie in her underwear alongside the mans comment. This comment was left by a hater, on the cellulite photo I posted yesterdayI didn't realize I have cellulite because I'm just TOO FAT!! Kneeland wrote.
Don't worry though. Me and my unnatural, unhealthy body fat are just gonna be over here helping women understand that there is NOTHING wrong with cellulite (or anything else about their bodies!) and that trolls like you are ignorant and uneducated, she continued.
Also I'll keep spinning my body as none of your damn business. Kneeland wrote.
Kneeland told Yahoo Beauty she wants to help women see their body differently than society tells them they should. She said women are often given two choices: Love your curves, or buy into the weight-loss B.S. There needs to be another way to have a relationship with our bodies.

I became a body-image coach, and I teach women how to overcome the issues that cause body shame, she said. It usually boils down to women feeling unsafe in their bodies or not feeling worthy because they cant maintain a standard of perfection.

Best Fitness Motivator: Amelia Avila Garcia – East Bay Express
Customers love her dedication. She may not know it, but she was, and still is, my motivation for my fitness and health, explained Candy Villareal, Bladium member, who has worked out with Garcia for the past ten years. Amelia has changed my life completely.
This sentiment is common among the members. Garcia has been the Group Fitness Manager of the sports club for the past eleven years. Since joining, she has transformed the lives of countless of individuals, some perhaps initially intimidated at the thought of working out, but who found a safe heaven and a sense of community at Bladium.
It was actually those workouts with her mom that fostered her desire to become an instructor. As a college student at Humboldt State, she did just that, obtaining her certification to teach step-aerobics, and even teaching classes during her time as an undergrad.
Garcias style of teaching, and her devotion to fitness and desire help people get fit, has even converted members of the club into instructors. You gotta love what you do, and it will automatically inspire people, she said.
I tried every class she taught, because I couldnt get enough of how strong and powerful her coaching was, Jayne Gagliano, an RPM instructor at Bladium, fondly remembered. Eventually, I took her RPM class, and that was it: I was hooked, and I knew I wanted to be an instructor myself.
Garcia says that fitness should make you feel good, even if it is just a mental release, and a boost of confidence. But she also understands the struggle to find the time to work out; she is also a mom of two a toddler and a six-month baby girl and also a wife.
Not only is it rare that someone loves what they do for a living, she gives everything shes got, gushed her husband, Gabriel Avila. She leads by example.
Garcias forged a community bond at Bladium. Since her tenure began, she has made sure that members feel comfortable, and actually want to come back and become regulars. Her reach goes beyond the hours at the sports club; she uses Facebook to keep in touch with members, and shares tips not only for fitness, but also about healthy eating habits, too.
Have a question about a fitness tracker? Garcia has plenty of answers. Need a quick workout routine to try on your own? Shell even film one for you.
I want our [Bladium] family to continue to grow, make sure that new people feel comfortable, and find something they like about fitness, she explained.

The death of retail may be one of the best things to happen to the fitness industry – MarketWatch
The death of retail may be the best thing that ever happened to gym owners.
As retailers close, malls are desperate for tenants, paving the way for gym owners to find a deal on real estate.
Retails demise isnt hurting us, said Ben Midgley, CEO and co-founder of Crunch Fitness Franchise. Its a big boon for our industry in terms of the availability of space.
In Manhattan, the number of available storefronts increased from 129 in the first quarter of 2016 to 213 in the first quarter of 2017, according to a May 2017 report from real estate services firm CBRE.
And that increase in supply has led to a drop in rent prices. The average asking rent in Manhattan has decreased 21.1% since 2014, and CBRE also said that landlords are doing everything they can to lure in tenants.
Landlords are offering additional tenant incentives, allowances and free rent periods, according to the report.
And its not just Manhattan. As many as 324 department stores will close in 2017, turning about 36 million square feet vacant, according to a study from JLL Research. M, -2.08% Macys announced plans in 2016 to close 100 stores, and JCP, -4.27% J.C. Penney said it would close 130 to 140 stores this year.
The last time I remember seeing rent deals like this was back in 2007, Crunch Fitnesss Midgley said. Thats when Midgley was serving as Executive Vice President of Planet Fitness PLNT, -0.73% and the beginning of the financial crisis.
Midgley estimates that about 65% of a gyms success is contingent upon what types of real estate deals gym owners can secure.
With the amount of people shopping online, the deals we have seen lately from landlords have been amazing, Midgley said.
Upscale gym Life Time Fitness Inc. is replacing the closed Macys building in Ardmore, Pa., just outside of Philadelphia. In York, Pa., a former J.C. Penney location reopened as a Golds Gym.
And in new developments, gyms are becoming the anchor tenant. Huntington Beachs Pacific City shopping center is anchored by an Equinox gym, while another Equinox gym will be the anchor tenant at Anthem Row, a shopping center in Washington, D.C., expected to open in 2018. And the new Westfield mall in Century City, Calif., which opened this April, is anchored by an Equinox.
Low rent prices, coupled with other trends, including an increased awareness for health and fitness, has been a boon for Crunch. Midgley said the company expects to hit a million members shortly.
Of course, its not just gyms that benefit from the death of retail.
Better quality malls are adapting and introducing internet resistant concepts, according to a report from Green Street Advisors. Newer entrants, such as restaurants and movie theaters are becoming increasingly important anchors to the mall.
