24 Hour Fitness Vallejo members may have been exposed to tuberculosis – East Bay Times

A letter informing gym members of possible exposure to tuberculosis was sent out to members of 24 Hour Fitness in Vallejo from the Solano County Public Health on Thursday.

Its essential to test those who may have had contact with the person with active T.B. disease, said the notice.

The infected individual has not been to the gym since May and there is no current risk at the facility, said Solano County Health Department Dr. Michael Stacey.

The county routinely reaches out to anyone who may have been in contact with an infected person once someone is diagnosed, he said.

A recent patient was diagnosed with the disease and authorities are working to not only keep the person isolated but to do community outreach to anyone who might have come in contact.

We want people to know so they can get tested, he said.

The patient was a member of the 24 Hour Fitness at 4300 Sonoma Boulevard.

Our members and team members health and safety are of the utmost importance, said a statement put out by 24 Hour Fitness. Working with Solano County Public Health, we have communicated this notification to members.

The county stresses that theres no need to panic. T.B. can only be acquired through close contact over a prolonged period of time with someone infected, said Dr. Stacey. Its also an airborne illness and cannot be contracted through touch or germs left on surfaces.

Most of the members of this gym were not that close to the individual, said Dr. Stacey. And many of them probably werent visiting the gym at the same time.

He said that they will be following up by further narrowing down the list of people who may have been exposed.

The person has not been in the gym since the end of May, he said. So there is no ongoing risk now. Everybody is safe and can keep going to the gym.

Dr. Stacey also wanted to point out that when a person is initially infected with T.B., they usually dont get sick right away, and they are also not contagious. He urges members to go get a simple T.B. test to be sure.

We can treat them, he said.

Startup Spotlight: motion.social is a fitness app that connects users around common interests – GeekWire

Motion.social co-founders Justin Huff andDavid Longdon. (Motion.social Photo)

David Longdon and Justin Huff believe that the experience not the data is what drives people to continue exercise routines over time.

Thats the premise for motion.social, a fitness app they created that relies more on connecting people around common interests than beating your last mile time (or trying to beat your friends).

Longdon is the co-manager of Cascade Bicycle Clubs High Performance Cycling Team and he produces the Velocity cycling blog for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. His background in Pacific Northwest fitness is complemented by Huffs as a tech exec. Huff was an early hire and Picnik and co-founder of PicMonkey, a photo editing startup in Seattle.

We are avid recreational athletes with deep personal connections to Seattles cycling and running communities, said Longdon, who serves as CEO of motion.social.

We caught up with Longdon for this Startup Spotlight, a regular GeekWire feature. Continue reading for his answers to our questionnaire.

Explain what you do so our parents can understand it:A smarter way to plan and share fitness activities with your friends, groups, clubs, and teams.

Inspiration hit us when:We recognized that group fitness activities, whether with formal teams or simply with friends, are the primary social hub for millions in the U.S. and across the globe. We also recognized that planning and carrying out these activities is harder than it should be. So we started to look deeper at some of the obstacles and unmet needs.

VC, Angel or Bootstrap: Bootstrap and Angel, because we prefer the flexibility and control that comes with a minimum of outside investors.

Our secret sauce is:Most existing fitness tools are based on the assumption that folks have a training and performance orientation. The current evidence is that a training and performance orientation is great for folks who are highly self-motivated and have a clear training objective like an upcoming race. Unfortunately, most folks who use fitness trackers actually gain weight.

In contrast, motion.social is built around the simple idea of bringing people together to do fitness activities. The motion.social user experience deemphasizes competition, performance data, and stack-ranking in favor of enabling and supporting the enjoyment and social benefits that come from moving our bodies with friends. Motion.social is based on the idea that fitness groups and the activities they do together are the most important social hubs for millions of us.

The smartest move weve made so far:As founders, weve brought complementary skills and experiences to this project.

The biggest mistake weve made so far:Like all founders, we second guess many of our decisions, and its hard to discern which may be mistakes, but here are a couple possibilities:

We are initially focused on getting established here in the Pacific Northwest. The use of motion.social is weather-dependent, so our launch timing last fall, as well as this years wet weather, may be a limiter on early adoption.

Our competition includes email groups, invite systems, group texts, and generic tools like Meetup and Facebook, all of which are formidable competitors that we may have underestimated.

Would you rather have Gates, Zuckerberg or Bezos in your corner:Zuckerberg: motion.social has the audacious goal of becoming the go-to social hub for fitness. The Facebook founders experience with building a social network would be an obvious benefit to us.

Our favorite team-building activity is:An easy run in the woods.

The biggest thing we look for when hiring is:Curiosity! We love people who want to try new things, as well as learn from them.

Whats the one piece of advice youd give to other entrepreneurs just starting out:There is a 90 percent chance you will fail. Inspire the rest of us by trying anyway!

Editors note: GeekWire Chairman Jonathan Sposato is a co-founder of Picnik and PicMonkey.

New fitness center opening in Toronto – WTOV Steubenville

At the corner of Federal Street and Franklin Avenue sits Torontos newest gem. The grand opening of The Gem Fitness is only a few days away.

At the corner of Federal Street and Franklin Avenue sits Torontos newest gem.

The grand opening of The Gem Fitness is only a few days away.

"We just want to help people, co-owner Maci Snyder-Crawford said. I mean that's why we're gearing this gym for young age, middle age, older adults. It's for anyone and everyone. We want everyone to get healthy together."

Snyder-Crawford and Kelly Francy's love for fitness brought them together. They originally met at a gym in Calcutta.

"The rest was history, you know, Snyder-Crawford said. She found a building and she wanted to start a business and asked me if I wanted to join in and it happened.

The gym features three different rooms with three different styled classes. There's a yoga studio, group fitness area, plus an area with some really unique equipment.

Next to the building is an empty lot, but there's a pretty big vision for that space.

"Yoga, Snyder-Crawford said. We have one guy that was in the military. He's going to do some sand bag classes. We can do anything out there we want to have the fun outside and inside."

There's a patio right off the main gym space that will be used to relax and socialize after class.

"We'll have water, we'll have seltzers, we'll also have protein bars granola bars, we'll also have stuff for kids and adults, Francy said.

Snyder-Crawfords husband built a peg board, and the goal is to climb up and across it.

"We're actually putting a chalk board right beside it, so if you actually can beat it, we'll let you sign your name, Snyder-Crawford said. We're going to have ropes, climbing ropes, looking for some climbing walls, stuff like that."

Its a place, to get moving, and get healthy in the heart of the Gem City, inspired by two women with hearts to help.

"This has always been my dream, Snyder-Crawford said. And it's so funny. I never thought it was achievable. I've always talked about wanting to do this, but we're looking forward to everyone seeing our love, you know. This is our passion."

The Gem Fitness will have its grand ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8 a.m. on July 4., followed by 2 hours of fitness classes.

They'll have everything from pound, insanity training, yoga, weights, and Pilates.

It's $5 to work out.

Precise Devices: Fitness Trackers Are More Accurate Than Ever – ConsumerReports.org

So why do trackers seem to help some people but not others? Our survey, plus interviews with experts, uncovered some strategies that can help you get more out of your device.

Be social. Using the devices with others can be a powerful motivator. Fitbit says that people who use the devices with online friends log an average of 700 more steps per day than those who go solo. Wendy Beck agrees, competing with other users in virtual challenges. It just makes me get up and move, Beck says.

Reward yourself. Financial or other incentives might also help, says Mitesh Patel, M.D., at the Penn Medicine Center for Health Care Innovation, Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia. That can be especially true when youre starting. He recommends trying an app that gives cash rewards for meeting your goals. One such app is StickK, a program developed by behavioral economists at Yale University that lets you set a goal and a monetary stake and have a friend enforce it.

Keep it simple. Eric Topol, M.D., a cardiologist and digital-medicine researcher at Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif., tells patients that if they dont want another electronic device in their lives and dont want to track their heart rate, they can just use their smartphones to count their steps.

Think in bouts. Many trackers now allow users to schedule Move alerts after every, say, 30 minutes of inactivity. And research suggests that long periods of sitting can be especially harmful.

Watch what you eat. If you want to lose weight, diet is key, no matter how much you exercise or which device you use. You can never out-train a bad diet, says Ross Steiner of Steiner Strength in San Francisco. I dont care how many steps you do.

And resist the urge to use a workout as an excuse to splurge on a big meal, he says. Though the calorie-counting feature on trackers may not be very accurate, many pair with apps, such as MyFitnessPal, that have food databases, allowing you to record what you eat. That could make you more conscious of what you eat and prompt you to make wiser food choices.

Stick with it. Our survey and other research suggest that many people give up on trackers within a few months. But more than a quarter of people in our survey who currently wear their device have been using it for one to two years, and 16 percent have been using it for more than two. So if you can force yourself to stick with a tracker through that initial period, using the deviceand regular exercisecould be more likely to become a lifelong habit.

Fitness star Jackie Warner reaches plea deal in DUI case: ‘Nothing she did that day was conscious’ – Los Angeles Times

Celebrity fitness trainer Jackie Warner agreed to a plea bargain Wednesday after prosecutors lowered the pending charges against her to a single misdemeanor count, allowing her to avoid time behind bars.

Warner, 48, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor count of alcohol-related reckless driving, also known as wet reckless, the Los Angeles County district attorneys office confirmed.

A judge sentenced her to a two-year probation term and ordered her to complete a 12-hour drinking and driving program.

A source close to Warner who was not authorized to speak publicly said she had taken Ambien, the sleeping medication, and woke up in police custody with no recollection of what happened.

Prosecutors said on Feb. 24, Warner smashed her car into an electric pole near Hacienda Place and Holloway Drive in West Hollywood. Next, she drove to a 7-Eleven store, where a Los Angeles County sheriffs deputy tried to take her into custody.

Prosecutors said she reversed her vehicle toward the deputy and crashed into a sheriffs patrol car.

She was originally charged with a felony count of assault upon a peace officer and three misdemeanor counts: driving under the influence, driving with a .08% blood-alcohol content and hit-and-run driving, prosecutors said. She faced as many as six years in prison if convicted.

On Wednesday, the original charges were dropped and Warner pleaded to the new, lesser charge.

Nothing she did that day was conscious, said her defense attorney, Shawn Holley. I feel that we would have prevailed at trial, but I understand the reasons she wanted to accept the D.A.s offer and move forward with her life.

From 2006 to 2008, Warner starred on the Bravo docu-soap Work Out, followed by another Bravo show, Thintervention. She has also published diet and fitness books and was a part-owner of a Beverly Hills gym.

The best fitness trackers of 2017 – Telegraph.co.uk

Fitness trackers have become a popular way to stay active with the success of wareable devices from Fitbit, Garmin and the popularity of the Apple Watch encouraging people tokeep tabs on their health.

And the devices are still improving, offering functions including sleep tracking, heart rate monitoringand different exercises. There have been some questions over their accuracy, but many offer a path to a more active lifestyle.

Smartwatches have also come into the same market as many fitness trackers and there is some overlap, making the choice between them harder. If you are interested in a smartwatch you can see our full list of the best smartwatches for 2017.

Fitness trackers are a great way to stay fit and active and can monitor users daily step count, sleep, heart rate and activity levels.

Not all fitness trackers are like wristwatches and many come in the form of small, lightweight bands like the Fitbit Alta HR, or can be attached to your ankle like the Moov Now. Others are simple dongles that can be clipped onto items of clothing.

Most are also unlike smartwatches and are not made to support multiple apps, although they do share some similar functions and the line is blurred, as more smartwatches gear themselves towards health tracking. Fitbit produce their own sports watch, the Fitbit Blaze, while the Apple Watch is a powerful fitness tracker in its own right.
