LA Fitness in Hunters Creek tests positive for Legionella | WFTV – WFTV Orlando

by: WFTV Web Staff, Cierra Putman Updated: Jun 27, 2017 - 7:07 PM

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. - At least one of the Central Florida LA Fitness gyms the state health department linked to four cases of Legionnaires disease tested positive for Legionella bacteria.

The Orange County Health Department reported that multiple samples from the LA Fitness at Hunters Creek came back positive.

Officials are still waiting to get the results from the LA Fitness in Metro West.

Legionella can cause two illnesses, including Legionnaires' disease, which is a rare but serious form of pneumonia.

People can get sick when they come in contact with contaminated water particles.

LA Fitness member Laura Castillo said she didnt use the spa or showers after learning the health department linked her gym to the disease.

I kind of freaked out, but this has always been pretty clean, she said. I just want them to take every precaution they can to prevent this from happening again.

Kent Donahue, with the Orange County Department of Health, said the agency does not require the facility to shut down completely.

Our epidemology staff has recommended to the LA Fitness in Hunters Creek to work with a water company to address the possible issues they have there, he said.

LA Fitness reports it ensured the showers and the pool were closed off to guests before the positive results came back.

A water treatment company has deep cleaned the spa and shower areas.

Earlier this year, three members of the LA Fitness in Ocoee were sickened by Legionnaires disease, but test results came back negative for the Legionella bacteria.

In Orange County, LA Fitness gyms were also linked to the disease in 2008 and 2010.

I Tried A Diet And Fitness Plan Based On My DNA And Couldn’t Believe The Results – BuzzFeed News

1. My suspicion was correct. Genetically, I do have a slower metabolism. Dr. Dan described this in scientific terms as an "efficient metabolism," meaning that I store energy more than someone with a fast or "inefficient metabolism."

2. I also have a gene variation for the FTO gene that is linked to a hormone called ghrelin, which controls hunger. My gene variation implies that I am someone who becomes hungry very easily, therefore creating a higher risk of overeating. Dan said that eating small frequent meals throughout the day to control hunger would be important.

3. I also have a gene variation in the APOA2 gene, indicating that I am sensitive to saturated fats, meaning that it sticks to me more easily! I asked Dr. Dan what foods have saturated fats and he said things like animal products, butter, dairy products, palm oil and coconut oil. Coconut oil?! I ate so much coconut oil because of how often it's promoted as a healthy oil. No wonder I was having trouble.

4. I am someone who would benefit from working out later in the day because my CLOCK gene variations imply that I am a night owl. This made perfect sense because I am definitely not a morning person.

5. I am someone who responds well to "high volume training," meaning high sets and reps of weight training. I always thought that lots of cardio would be the key to losing weight. It turns out that it was going to take a lot of strength training. Dan said that the more muscle I built, the more fat I would burn.

6. I am someone who does not switch from burning carbohydrates to burning fat easily. This would mean that I would need to be eating the right balance of macronutrients: Carbs, protein and fat.

7. Dan also said that I have a gene variation that indicates I metabolize caffeine slowly. This means that I would benefit by having a cup of green tea about 30 minutes prior to a workout for optimal energy.

LA Fitness club tests positive for Legionnaires’ bacteria – Orlando Sentinel

An LA Fitness club near the Hunters Creek neighborhood tested positive for the bacteria that causes Legionnaires disease while state health investigators await results from another club location.

The two LA Fitness clubs in the area have been under investigation since May by Florida Department of Health officials in Orange County after four separate cases of Legionnaires were traced back to the two gyms.

The club that tested positive is at 12700 S. Orange Blossom Trail, about 12 miles south of downtown Orlando.

Epidemiologists are still waiting for results from water tests taken at the LA Fitness in Metro West; those could be back within the week, said Kent Donahue, a spokesman for the Florida Department of Health in Orange County.

The samples were taken at several spots in the Hunters Creek gym, before the hyperchlorination of the spa and the install of point-of-use filters on the showers, Donahue said in an email.

Health officials were not able to provide the status of the four people that contracted Legionnaires.

Two customers at each facility were diagnosed with Legionnaires disease, a severe form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria, which usually grows in closed water systems. The bacteria can be especially harmful to people with compromised respiratory systems and the elderly.

The bacteria grows in the water pipes at large buildings and then is expelled and turned into mist when devices such as showers and spas are turned on.

LA Fitness sent warnings to customers of the two clubs earlier this month warning about the possible contamination. LA Fitness has not responded to a request for comment about the positive test.

Reports of Legionnaires disease and Legionella bacteria happen more frequently in enclosed water systems, such as hot tubs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC reports that there were about 6,000 cases of Legionnaires diseases reported in 2015 in the United States.

LA Fitness has been involved in two other Legionnaires investigations in Orange County in the last decade, including in 2008 at a club on Michigan Street in Orlando and in 2010 at an LA Fitness in the Waterford Lakes area.

However, health clubs are not a common source of Legionnaires disease, said Laura Cooley, a medical epidemiologist for the CDC.

State health officials recommended that LA Fitness consult with a water management company to address the issues.

Earlier this month a spokeswoman for LA Fitness said the company has hired water treatment firm Nalco Company to help take care of any problems.

Investigators in Lake County are also looking into three cases of Legionnaires disease tied to the hot tub at a senior living community in Clermont. Results from that test were not yet available.

Joshua Newman, a Fitness Entrepreneur, Sentenced to 41 Months in Prison – New York Times

Josh acknowledged he came from privilege and he blew it, said Michael Stolper, the lawyer who represents 11 investors. I think justice was served.

Mr. Newmans business failures and allegations that he had failed to repay debts to investors were first reported by The New York Times in May 2015. He is scheduled to report to prison on Aug. 28.

Although todays sentence disappoints us, we have complete faith that Josh shall return to society as a true asset to his community, said Priya Chaudhry, a lawyer who represented Mr. Newman along with Eric Kanefsky. Josh is lucky to have many gifts, including resilience.

Mr. Newman intends to repay his victims and has accepted full responsibility for his actions, Ms. Chaudhry said.

Raised in Silicon Valley, Mr. Newman graduated from Palo Alto High School in 1997, just as the first internet start-up boom was taking hold. At Yale, Mr. Newman majored in cognitive science, a field that combines elements of computer science, neuroscience and psychology. By his junior year, Mr. Newman has said, he was a managing partner in the Silicon Ivy Venture Fund, which provided seed money to start-ups backed by college students.

Even before he graduated, Mr. Newman was featured in an April 2000 article in The Wall Street Journal about dorm room venture capitalists. He seemed to have a bright future, but things went wrong when a small film production company he had started, Cyan Pictures, ran into financial trouble and accumulated big debts that would dog Mr. Newman for years.

He then tried his hand at CrossFit, an intensive workout regimen, and became an outspoken devotee. He was a founder of a large, independently owned CrossFit center in Manhattan.

But Mr. Newman got in trouble when he began raising money to finance another CrossFit center. Federal prosecutors contend much of the money he raised for that venture and others went either to his personal use or to the investors in his failed movie production company.

Mr. Newman is not affiliated with CrossFit Inc., a fitness consulting firm based in Washington. Centers using the CrossFit brand name are independently run.

Even after he pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud in March 2016, Mr. Newman continued to posit himself as an entrepreneur. He created a website for a new fitness and training program called Composite Fitness.

And he continued to post messages on his blog. His last message was posted on Monday under the headline: Penance.

The brief post was a quotation from Joseph J. Ellis, the American historian and writer: And the only thing to do with a sin is to confess, do penance and then, after some kind of decent interval, ask for forgiveness.

Photo provided by Crunch Flatbush

I recently had a chance to talk with the Group Fitness Manager Josef Woodson of Crunch Fitness on Flatbush Avenue. Crunch Fitness has an impressive offering of over 50 classes, early risers can take classes starting at 6am and the last class of the day starts at 8pm.

Whats your fitness background like?

My background is a little different than most fitness instructors, as I am a professional dancer and choreographer. I came into fitness by way of dance. I am passionate about dance and fitness and how the two work together to support one another. In addition to my work at Crunch, I am the Associate Director at Skin Dance company.

Turns out, Mr. Woodson is being quite modest. He has an impressive background, including working at places like Disney Land in Tokyo and teaching at Queensborough Community College. Learn more here: http://josefwoodson.com

How do you approach teaching a fitness class?

I welcome all types of people into my classes. I want the novice to seasoned professional to feel like they have a place. At Crunch, we focus on no judgements and a place for all. First, I start off by picking really great music. Music is important and sets the tone for the class.

My classes are FUN! I try to bring my energy and excitement to the classroom- I want all of my students to really enjoy the class. I am always happy to provide modifications any students who may need them. We are here to move and have fun- no judgements!

Currently, I teach Zumba and after my classes, participants will often come up and tell me how they enjoyed the class so much it didnt even feel like a workout.

While all of the fitness instructors at Crunch have their own teaching styles, we all work as team and ant to provide fun, high energy classes that are for any type of fitness level.

Why should I go to a group class?

Community is so important and helps you to feel better while working out. Together, our energy creates a space, motivation, and the confidence for us to work together towards a common goal. In doing that, we help each other meet personal fitness goals. Working out in group classes is a way to create new friendships, accountability, and have fun together.

Whats your favorite group class?

We have so many I like:

Beachbody: a series to prepare your body to hit the beach

Yoga Body Sculpt: kicks up yoga a notch for a full body workout

Belly, Butt, and Thigh Bootcamp: you can imagine the fun in this class!

Representatives from a French manufacturing company are speaking out after a popular fitness blogger was killed by a whipped cream canister that malfunctioned and struck her chest.

Rebecca Burger, a 33-year-old fitness personality, suffered cardiac arrest in her home earlier this month, French authorities told 20 Minutes. Officials were able to revive her but Burger died in a hospital the next day.

Alleva: Variations for squats match your fitness level – News Chief

By Marlo Alleva Ledger correspondent

When it comes to lower body workouts, we all know, hands down, squats take the cake.

The possibilities are nearly endless. The choices in variations of squats are for all levels of fitness and capability. There are wide stance, heavy weighted, low, shallow, pulsing, and super slow, to name a few. You can change them up, add a few together and build your own lower body workout to suit your needs and your physical ability.

Our move today is a close stance squat, and the focus in this move is your quads and glutes. This move can be performed with or without added weights, depending on how much resistance you want.

To begin this move, place your feet just under your hips, keeping your toes pointed forward. Hold your chest tall and engage your midsection and you are ready to move.

Start this close squat by bending in the knees, aiming for a sitting posture. Keep the knees behind the toes and your body weight in your heels. Continue to lower your rear end as low as you can while being able to efficiently return to a standing position.

Keep this move on a steady rhythm, shooting for at least 1012 squats per set, for three to five sets. This close stance squat is great for all levels of fitness, as you tend to have more control of your move the closer your feet are together. Therefore, you can perform more, and increase your intensity as well. This move is also great if you add hand weights or a weighted medicine ball.

This move is good by itself on a daily basis or added into your lower body routine.

Any way you decide to incorporate this move, you will only be making your cake that much sweeter!

Marlo Alleva, an instructor at Golds Gym and group fitness coordinator at Fontaine-Gills YMCA, can be reached at faluvzpa@msn.
