New Trend Has Fitness Buffs Diving Into Water Workouts – CBS Miami
Follow CBSMIAMI.COM:Facebook|Twitter
NEW YORK (CBSMiami) Gyms are now riding the popularity wave of water-based exercise, but dont think this class is for your grandparents. Mountain climbers, jogging in place, and squats are all high intensity exercises usually done on land but are now being brought to the water. Its water aerobics taken to a new level.
Even Olympic swimmer Cullen Jones, who is taking the newest and most intense class called Speedo Water Extreme at Life Time Fitness gym in New York, says its like boot camp in the water.
I think when people see it theyll be excited to try it.
More gyms around the country are offering water exercise classes, getting people in the pool and pumped up for a challenging workout.
The level of intensity, the tools were using, the toys you get to play with, makes it different, said class participant Assia Winfield.
Instructors say water exercises arent just good for your joints but it also helps restore sore muscles.
When you bring it into the pool you can still have the intensity without the same level of compressive forces to the joints so you can do it more frequently and not feel as beat up, explained Life Time Fitness Rob Glick.
There are also yoga classes, but its anything but tranquil. These workouts make a splash even on someone like Eric Betz who works out six days a week.
It was actually really, really tough and challenging for an athlete like myself, said Betz.
Theres a class that uses yoga boards but is called Tsunami. Its meant to supplement traditional land based workouts, while still working key muscle groups.
I dont have to say connect to your core, because if you dont connect to your core, youre going in the water, said Glick.
Seems like a lot of people are having fun diving into these new water routines.
The Life Fitness Gym says its aqua classes are up in enrollment 10-percent year over year with more classes in development and the aquatic exercise association reports the number of certified aquatic fitness professionals has jumped by over 50-percent since 2009.

2900 Wichita 3rd graders participated in fitness and safety day – KWCH
WICHITA, Kan. Thousands of kids in the Wichita School District got the chance Friday to take advantage of the nice weather and promote a healthy lifestyle.
Friday was Kansas Kids Fitness and Safety Day.
Nearly three thousand third graders from every elementary school in the Wichita district were bused to Northwest High Friday morning for Kansas Kids Fitness and Safety Day.
They started in the gym to see, first hand the benefits of being healthy. The saw with a little show from some martial artists with Wichita Airstrike.
Once outside they got to compete.
"It's just great to see them having fun, at least for the morning," said P.E. Teacher Tim Coltrain from Caldwell Elementary.
Coltrain, along with other teachers and hundreds of high school students volunteered to show the third graders different sports like frisbee, tug-of-war, soccer and other games that encouraged them to be active.
"I think it's really important to encourage the physical activity with the kids. This way they get to have some exposure to new games and just think about a healthy and active lifestyle," said Coltrain.
With only eight days of school left, Coltrain says the nice day was a perfect way to get them prepared for the end of school and get a good running start to summer.

Labour’s election campaign secret in Exeter revealed by fitness app – Devon Live
Comments(0)
Labour's run of success in Exeter is often attributed to the energetic campaigning of its loyal band of local volunteers.
Ben Bradshaw won the city from the Tories in 1997 and has clung onto power ever since, despite two bruising elections for the party in 2010 and 2015.
The cathedral city remains a beacon of red in a sea of Tory blue across Devon with city council control and all its seven county council seats in the city
Now the extraordinary fitness of the doorstep team has been revealed by data from the online app FitBit.
Councillors, campaigners have been putting in the hard miles to keep the red flag flying over the city centre and tracking it all via smart phones and watches.
Ben Bradshaw, a keen cyclist, sparked the craze and regularly outpaces many of his younger supporters, putting in 21 miles on the campaign trail one day this week.
City councillor Emma Morse recorded a respectable 14 miles in one day while fellow councillor Hannah Packham clocked up 16 miles.
Even veteran city council leader Pete Edwards has got in on the act, racking up 14 miles, or around 30,000 steps.
Meg Williams, campaign agent for Ben Bradshaw in the upcoming general election, managed 15 miles despite spending much of her time driving around.
The record among the 100-stron team was set at 44km or 27 miles last year by a Labour campaigner.
She said the idea for recording how far people had walked started during the campaign to re-elect Mr Bradshaw in 2015.
"It has become something of a running joke about who is working the hardest," she told Devon Live.
"A lot of it is down to Ben he started the whole steps thing.
"He creates that sort of atmosphere by his personality and as soon as someone comes out campaigning they just tend to keep coming.
"Ben expects to work hard he knows it's a close election here and we don't take anything fro granted."

Liverpool managing Philippe Coutinho fitness ahead of Southampton – source – ESPN FC
Steve Nicol picks Liverpool to finish in the top four and Manchester United will be the team to miss out.
Liverpool forward Philippe Coutinho is having his fitness managed to maximise his chances of being able to play against Southampton on Sunday, sources have told ESPN FC.
Coutinho, 24, was forced off early in Liverpool's 1-0 win at Watford on Monday night after suffering a "dead leg."
The Brazil international was absent from team training at Melwood on Thursday afternoon, but sources say he took part in a light session as he recovers from the knock.
Coutinho downplayed the injury after the Watford victory, saying it was not "serious," while Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hoped for a swift recovery.
In an interview published on the club's official website, Coutinho says he is hopeful that he can play in Sunday's game against Southampton.
"The injury is much better," he said. "It was a hard tackle and what happened was a dead leg. It caused a lot of pain in the area I was hit, but the pain has reduced now.
"At the moment, I am feeling very well -- the first couple of days were the most painful.
"When you have to come out of such an important [game] like this one, and when you leave that early, it frustrates you. But thanks to God it was nothing major -- just a strong tackle."
Liverpool hope to have Coutinho fit and available at Anfield on Sunday as they look to keep their Champions League qualification hopes on course.
