FRESNO, Calif. Dina Juve, a rising star in Fresnos health and fitness community, didnt always have a sculpted body, a taste for healthy foods or a positive attitude.
At one time, she was known as the fast food queen, weighed 202 pounds, and was an 18-year-old single mom. She suffered from juvenile arthritis and autoimmune disease. She was in physical pain most of the time, depressed and had little energy to keep up with a toddler.
I sat on the couch on day, looked at him and just started crying, says Juve. I didnt want him to see me like this, I wanted him to be healthy and happy.
It was a low point for Juve, but also the beginning of what would become her new life. She gave up sugary soda and eating fast food. She focused on healthier, minimally processed food. After a while, she also began to exercise. She stayed out of the health clubs in favor of her VCR at home and exercise tapes of Buns of Steel and Tae Bo.
I was too embarrassed to go to a gym; I did not want people to see me trying, she says. What if I failed?
Except Juve didnt fail. She got stronger, she got healthier and she became a new person. She immersed herself in the study of nutrition and exercise, earning certifications in kettle bells and TRX a band resistance program. Shes a battling ropes coach, Barre instructor and a weight-loss specialist, counseling clients on how to live and maintain a healthier lifestyle. She dropped 90 pounds and her weight these days ranges between 110-114.

Along with her business partner, Melissa Oberti, she also founded FitnessSocial, a northeast Fresno fitness studio with a growing following.
Juve, who admits to living comfortably outside of the spotlight, was thrust into the public eye by friends and clients. With their encouragement she rose to national prominence after being selected one of five women vying for Womens Health 2015 Next Fitness Star. She appeared in the July/August issue of Womens Health magazine. Although she didnt win, she appeared on the Today show twice and made many valuable connections.
Today, the 43-year-old wife and mother of four is in demand as a public speaker, cooking instructor, and weight-loss expert. She has a spot on the Patio Cafes menu under the label Dinas Picks where she and restaurant owner Robyn Richardson have come up with menu items that are under 550 calories. And this year Juve will be speaking at Central California Womens Conference on Sept. 19. Her topic is Real Fast Food.
Friends say they arent surprised that Juve has become a health and fitness guru.
People talk about finding their passion or their calling and for Dina it is fitness and nutrition, says K.C. Cornwell. I really think that Dina was put on the planet to make people feel better about themselves.

Hillori Hansen, culinary director for Whole Foods Market Fresno, has tapped Juve to lead several cooking classes. Recently, Juve and Hansen taught a class on how to make a healthier hamburger using five ingredients or fewer.
One of things that people love about Dina is that she is real, she has gone through struggles in her life and has overcome them, Hansen says. I can see her taking her message to a national stage.
That may be happening as Juve explores writing a book and more speaking engagements.
This is a whole new life for me, Juve says. But it is one that allows me to share my story and help others become healthier and happier.
To help you get started on living a healthy life, Juve has come up with 10 tips to follow:
Dina Juve, owner of Fitness Social, is photographed Monday, April 3, 2017 in Fresno, Calif.(Photo: ERIC PAUL ZAMORA, TNS)
1. Before embarking on a change in your diet, ask yourself why you are doing it. If you can dig deeper than just vanity, you are more likely to be successful. If you dont know why you are doing it, chances are you wont continue to truly live a healthy lifestyle. If you are doing it to feel better, have more energy, for health reasons, to be around for your children and grandchildren, etc., then you stand a better chance of success.
2. Drink water. Every system in your body depends on water. My recommendation to my clients is to drink 16 ounces of water before each meal and snack to keep it simple. On average, try drinking 48 to 96 ounces of water per day. I find that when my clients have water before eating they tend to eat less.
3. Stick to whole, real food. Avoid foods that are heavily processed or contain large amounts of artificial sweeteners, dyes or chemicals. Try to eat foods with ingredients you can pronounce. Think fresh fruits, vegetables, complex carbohydrates, and animal- and plant-based proteins.
4. Add healthy fats from fish, avocado, olives, nuts and tropical oils. Nuts have a lot of health benefits and help you lose fat by improving metabolism, balancing hormones and eliminating constant cravings by keeping you feeling full longer. Healthy fat calories do add up quickly, so be mindful of portion sizes if you are trying to lose weight.
5. If you crave something, eat it guilt free just dont overdo it. Eat the serving size, enjoy it, savor it and be done with it. If your indulgence doesnt satisfy you, ask yourself why. Are there other things going on in your life that need to be addressed?

6. Avoid categorizing foods with words like good or bad. Negative words make you feel bad about yourself and thats not helpful. Aim to eat foods that give you energy and not make you sluggish.
7. Mindful eating. Eat when you are hungry and do not eat when you are not. We have gotten into a routine of eating on a schedule, even when we are not actually hungry, or we skip meals. Try listening to your body. When you pay attention to your body, you will find yourself fueling your body and using that fuel before you eat again.
8. Slow down when you eat. Try to take 20-30 minutes to eat a meal. Put your silverware down between bites. Try to chew your food fully. You will most likely find yourself eating less. Try to not eat when you are stressed, anxious, angry or rushed because this can be the cause of overeating.
9. Aim to eat the rainbow by adding more fruits and vegetables. The more colorful your plate looks the more appetizing it will appear to your eyes. It will also most likely ensure that you will receive the vitamins and minerals your body needs.
10. Yes, you can still eat out and have the body you desire. You just have to balance it like a checking account. If you overeat the debt will show up on your body. If you do not go out to eat, stay at home and do not enjoy life, thats not creating a long-term healthy enjoyable lifestyle you can maintain. We call that a diet and diets dont last long term. A healthy eating lifestyle has variety and it includes occasional indulgences. You know you have the plan that works best for you when you feel, move and look your very best. It really is not as hard as it seems.

New fitness trend–crawling – Story | WeAreCenralPA | WTAJ – WTAJ
One of the newest fitness fads may look better suited for a toddler than an adult. It's called crawling. At A-4 Fitness, students hit the floor on all four to crawl their way to better health, from crab crawls ti a more traditional toddler move.
Instructor Adam Lerner, who owns the fitness club, includes crawls in his classes, each one activating multiple parts of the body.
"Your triceps are working, your chest is working, your abs are working, your hips are working," Lerner says.
According to Lerner, crawling offers more than just a workout. It can reset your body, bringing back strength and mobility most people lose over the years.
Crawling is an essential movement that helps babies develop core functions like balance, reflexive strength and hand eye coordination.
Lerner says an adult crawling fires up muscles that don't always get used the way they should.

YMCA upgrades underway, will include new children center and fitness center – WSAZ-TV
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The first stage of a $2.5 million upgrade project, at the YMCA of Kanawha Valley in Charleston, has been completed.
YMCA officials say a renovated bathroom is only the tip of the iceberg of this project, which also aims to improve facilities for children involved in the organization's after-school program.
"Something this particular YMCA has always needed is a dedicated youth development area," YMCA of Kanawha Valley President and CEO Monty Warner said.
That need is set to be filled over the next 16 months, during which time; the YMCA will spend over $1 million to convert the current fitness center into an all-inclusive child center.
"We'll be able to have the space for educational opportunities," Warner said. "But also opportunities for them to explore drama and theater and art as well as athletic activities."
The new children's area is expected to be open by August 2018; just before the start of the new school year.
Meanwhile, the fitness center isn't going away, it's simply moving to a more spacious area within the building, making room for more equipment and an upstairs running track, all of which will be open 24 hours.
According to Warner, additional improvements will be made in the YMCA's main lobby and the men's and women's locker rooms.

Promoting Paleo a different type of fitness studio – liherald.com

Rounds Elite Fitness 3199 Lawson Blvd., Oceanside (516) 442-2083
Just as the Paleo diet avoids unnatural items like processed foods, Paleo fitness focuses on the basics of exercise, from gentle wellness (found in yoga) to vigorous workouts (such as in CrossFit). Rounds Elite Fitness, a unique Paleo fitness studio, incorporates numerous forms of exercise to achieve optimum strength and endurance, with a more natural approach.
In many gyms, a circuit means going from machine to machine. The Strength and Endurance Circuit at Rounds Elite Fitness incorporates activities like boxing, cardio kickboxing, martial arts, free weight training, powerlifting, kettle bells, battle ropes, plyometrics and a lot more. The circuit has 17 rings (stations), with a bell that goes off every 2.5 minutes, alerting the members to move on to the next task. The circuit continues the entire time the studio is open, and a trainer is always on the floor, directing and available for help. Each week, the tasks (exercises) are altered, so gym members are never bored. The studio offers exclusive rowing classes, which are easy on joints, as well as cycling classes and group fitness.
Owner Sensei Eloy Santos was raised in Rio De Janiero. As a veteran of the Brazilian Army, he mastered military fitness conditioning and self-defense. He has been active in martial arts for more than 40 years, both competing, and instructing adults and children. Prior to opening Rounds Elite Fitness in 2015, he owned and operated Rio Academy in East Rockaway for nearly 20 years.
At Rounds Elite Fitness, Santos has developed a program for people with Parkinsons disease. Parkinsons attacks the nervous system, causing tremors and loss of balance, inhibiting daily life. Studies have shown that certain types of exercise can help reduce the intensity of symptoms. Santos uses his expertise, understanding of the disease, and passion for exercise to modify routines and monitor progress.
Those with Parkinsons disease want to prolong their independence, he said. The methods he uses, such as rowing, could promote smoother movement while strengthening the muscles, thus, possibly improving a persons quality of life.
While most of his clientele attends Rounds Elite for weight loss, toning, cardio, and/or building muscles, Santos takes things further. If a client has recently lost weight, he helps him or her tighten up and maintain the weight. With martial arts, he has continued with some students from childhood to college. Several of his students have even become his instructors.
Children can enjoy the Boxing Bee program, and the tire wall for climbing. Theres a special membership for high school students, with a startup-wrestling program. For everyone else, memberships vary from pay-as-you-go, to one-month, three-month, six-month, etc.
All instructors are highly experienced. Nia Merced was a trainer on The Biggest Loser TV series. Alba Galan is a female Black Belt and teaches the martial arts foundation class. Linda Rizzi is the cycling instructor and a personal trainer; Zack Blumberg, a Golden Gloves boxer, and Austin Halik, who started with Santos at age three, now teaches the grappling class. Rounds Elite Fitness is open seven days a week.

Napercisewas born to help exhausted mums and dads boost their mental and physical wellbeing," the company said in a press release.

Tackling the intangibles in fitness – Washington Blade
Summer is around the corner and now more than ever people are more aware of their bodies. I like to call it get right season because everyone is trying to get it right and tight.
This means many goals are being set for flat tummies, rock hard abs, tight booties, chiseled arms and that magazine body that we all would love to have. As much as I love people setting goals toward improved fitness levels and a sexier body, its important to value out the success of your program in ways outside of physique.
The body is unpredictable and even when you do everything right, sometimes the body doesnt respond how you want it to. So its important to recognize the successes that you are achieving outside of physical achievements that will keep you feeling engaged and motivated throughout your fitness journey.
While the rest of the fitness world is going to flood you with magazine articles and YouTube videos on how be the hottest girl or gurl at the beach, Im going to challenge you to look a little deeper and teach you how to turn your summer goals into lifestyle intangible goals. Today lets tap into my top four intangible results that you get from dedicating yourself to getting fitter and healthier.
Confidence is my number one most important reason to start and stay in a workout program. Im talking real confidence that is built by repeatedly trying new things and accomplishing things that you arent sure you can achieve. Like lifting that weight that is heavier than youre used to lifting, completing that extra mile on your run or going into that inversion in yoga class when upside down is not your forte. Its better to build confidence by overcoming plateaus you didnt think you could than focusing on physique results alone.
In the gym, as in real life, the comfort zone is the place where no growth happens. If you do the same workout at the same weight in the same order of course, your progress will halt. This rule also applies true for your personal and emotional growth. Its always a great moment when I see clients start to embrace trying new things in the gym and I see it start to bleed into their personal lives. As you are progressing through your workout, reflect on how you have changed emotionally to be more comfortable with the uncomfortable. The ability to adapt outside of what we are used to helps us to cope with stressors better.
How much can you take? Can you push through? Each day that you enter your workout is a day that you build up a little more resilience. Exercise thrives on the idea that you will put a little more load on your body than you did before and that the body will in turn respond making you stronger. The part we often ignore is the fact that we also are building up our mental strength each time we commit to getting to our workout, every time we say yes to something we normally would say no too, and each time our body says quit but we find strength to push through anyway. This resilience is what makes us live our best lives in and out of the gym so remember to reflect on how you have achieved the power of resilience as you have progressed.
Staying consistent is key to success in so many aspects of life but its paramount to seeing results within your exercise program. Over my years of training the biggest difference between those who reach their goals and those who dont has to be one that some stay consistent over time and the others dont. Ive also learned that learning to be consistent is a skill that is built in by constantly having systems in place to help keep you accountable. Its always great when I have clients over years who I remember would never do any workouts outside of our sessions who now enjoy working out on their own. They have built up the skill set to get their workouts in without guidance and this can be a skill of discipline that moves throughout all parts of their life. Discipline starts in the gym and moves everywhere.
Entering dedicated exercise routine can be the catalyst to improving your confidence, stepping out of your comfort zone, building resilience and learning consistency. Of course, the physical benefits to exercise are always fun to see, but remember those achievements may only surface depending on many factors. To stay engaged, look at the gamut of improvements that you get by being part of a consistent program.

Strut Your Way to a Dancer’s Body at Dance House Fitness – Houstonia Magazine
ONE GLANCE AT THE DANCE HOUSE FITNESS WORKOUT SCHEDULE and its pretty clear that this isnt your typical group exercise studio. The lineup is full of sassy class names like Strut, Booty Werk, and Tight AF that are designed to make clients feel sexy, confident, and strong. Inside the Montrose studio, a DJ booth sits in the back of room, which is splashed with plenty of sunlight and a brightly colored graffiti mural. Printed in huge lettering on the wall is the signature Dance House Fitness motto: We dont work out, we werkitout.
Meeting founder, co-owner, and instructor Jenny Sanchez is the first step to understanding the concept; the energetic dance maven is a powerful force at the helm of any class. On this particular Saturday she is wearing old school high-top sneakers and preparing to teach Hustle, which feels more like a party than a workout. As the DJ blasts the latest pop songs through the sound system, Sanchez quickly finds any neatly tied ponytails in the room and signals for them to be taken down (sweaty, sexy, hair whipping is a must in her studio). After a quick warm-up, the class falls in behind Sanchez, watching and following along with her steps. The dance moves are not only modern and explosive, but are also repetitive enough to allow dancers of any level to catch on and keep up.
Sanchez has been involved with dance in some capacity since the age of two, but didnt have enough time to pursue it during college. After graduating, she was determined to become her healthiest self yet. I started a blog The FITistato keep myself accountable," she says. What started as a personal method for accountability has since turned into a full-on brand. After sitting back and realizing that there was a need in Houston for this type of niche, I quickly moved on it.
Dance House Fitness opened its first location just over a year ago and continues to expand its following, with Sanchez recently being named one of Houston Chronicles 50 Hottest Fitness Pros. The programming she has created is a unique marriage of both dance and fitnesswhile three of the class types are dance-based (Strut, Hustle, and Choreography), the other three (Booty Werk, Tight AF, and Stretch4SX) do not involve any dance at all.
All our classes are open to all levelseven non-dancers! DHF allows people a space to do what they love without any stress or a competitive atmosphere, says Sanchez. Along with breaking the mold of typical dance studios, DHF is the first and only that has a resident DJ as part of the team. In order to manage the business and cope with the growing demand, two additional instructors have recently come on board.
Sanchez and her business partner Christian Bianchi have ambitious goals for the future of DHF. With continued dedication, they hope to bring more locations not only to Houston, but eventually the global community. Laughs Sanchez: I wantDHFto be the next Starbucks of the fitness world! I wantpeople to want it every single day and be able to get to it on every corner!

Fitness Buff Turned Trash At The Beach Into Full-Fledged Gym – Huffington Post
Most people go to the beach to kick back. Not Alcindo Soares.
Soares always dreamed of becoming a professional athlete, Great Big Story reported in its profile of the exercise buff. But when he couldnt afford to join a gym in Cape Verde, an island country off the coast of West Africa, he decided to build his own.
Soares, who works in construction, collects the detritus he finds on the shores of Santa Maria beach and fashions it into workout equipment. The outdoor facility is replete with many of the trappings youd find at a standard fitness club, including weights, pull-up bars and a bench for dips. But theres no membership fee here.
YouTube
Theres a dual purpose behind Soares mission. Hes is cleaning up his beach at a time when environmentalists are particularly concerned about the amount of pollution in our oceans. There are more than 150 million tons of plastic in marine waters today. At this rate, there will be more plastics than fish (by weight) in the oceans by 2050.
Soares is also providing a free community center to an area thats been ravaged by poverty. In Cape Verde, 21 percent of the population lives below the international poverty line, meaning they subsist on less than $1.25 a day.
For as long as I live, Ill continue to use it, Soares told Great Big Story of his gym. Train, then go swim in the ocean, and the day is complete.

LA Fitness approaching soft opening at Westfield Southgate – Sarasota Herald-Tribune
Maggie Menderski Retail Reporter @maggiemenderski
With at least eight new retailers in the works, theres been no shortage of movement at Westfield Southgate this year.
And thats even before the treadmills, cycles and aerobics classes at the new LA Fitness really get rolling.
The rows of fitness equipment have moved in and the construction crews have cleared the dust at the south end of the old Dillards property.
But its really not fair to call it that anymore.
The department store chains storefront and signature dome have been replaced with a sleek facade. Theres a three-lane swimming pool in a space that likely once held racks of clothing, and the interior has an earthy, fresh vibe to it that almost makes it feel like a spa. Its a new prototype for LA Fitness and a new look for the mall as a whole.
If youd never known it was once a Dillards, youd never be able to tell.
All thats really left in this part of the evolution is for the doors to open.
While LA Fitness couldnt give me a solid answer on when the soft opening will begin, the staff expects it will be soon.
This launch is the next step in a much bigger project. The traditional indoor shopping mall at U.S. 41 and Siesta Drive is midway through its transformation into a modern lifestyle and entertainment center. That began in 2013 with new fixtures and picked up speed in 2015 when Westfield demolished the vacant Saks Fifth Avenue and built a Cobb CineBistro on that site. Its been a 14-month gap between that opening and the new LA Fitness, but Westfield has been busy. The mall also has five restaurant spaces, a day spa and a new coffee shop under construction. Meanwhile, Benderson Development Co., which owns the old Dillards anchor, has a Luckys Market in the works adjacent to the LA Fitness.
Its a big moment for a property thats struggled since the Mall at University Town Center opened in 2014. That $315 million mall siphoned off tenants from Southgate, diluted the retail market and left the high-end shopping center in need of a whole new identity.
And it only takes a quick drive around the property to see that the mall is getting much more than a makeover.
I stopped in on Thursday morning and met with Natalie Adams, LA Fitness district operations manager for Southwest Florida, and Christa Kremer, the marketing director for Southgate and its sister property Westfield Sarasota Square.
In this increasingly difficult retail climate filled with bankruptcies and closeout sales, its unusual to see brick-and-mortar players excited, but Kremer and Adams were beaming.
Adams told me shes already seen a strong response from the community. Florida is an active place, and even though she has an LA Fitness just five miles east on Cattlemen Road, she says theres a strong demand for another one.
The new center will have child care, volleyball and basketball leagues, and may eventually offer as many as 30 classes. LA Fitness new prototype features a special space for its personal training clients and extra space for its members to gather. Its the kind of place where their clients can linger, visit and be recognized. Just like the old TV show "Cheers," she says, but its a gym, not a bar. The center will have a nutritionist on staff too, which pairs nicely with LA Fitness' organic-focus neighbor. Once Luckys Market opens this summer, the gym's members will have relatively immediate access to whatever supplements or foods the nutritionist recommends.
Its that kind of continuity thats exciting for Kremer.
The mall's newest tenants fit together, she told me. Luckys Market, LA Fitness and the upcoming LCore day spa have a wellness element to them, and theres a social aspect that comes with the restaurants and coffee shop.
The new identity that mall owners have been working on isnt just about shopping. Its about living.
National retail reports overwhelmingly show that people are increasingly spending more money on experiences than they did before the Great Recession.
If thats true here, things may be finally working out for the mall.
Or at the very least, with LA Fitness there people will be.
