Milwaukee woman blames burn on exploding fitness tracker – WISN Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE
A Milwaukee woman said her Fitbit fitness tracker exploded while it was on her arm, leaving her with second-degree burns.
Dina Mitchell said she had owned her Fitbit Flex 2 for about two weeks when the device allegedly caught fire on her arm while she was reading a book on Tuesday night.
"I was literally just sitting and reading when my Fitbit exploded," Mitchell told ABC News in an emailed statement on Sunday. "It was either defective or really mad I was sitting still so long I dont know. Either way, It burned the heck out of my arm."
She said she ripped the device off of her arm as it was still burning and tossed it onto the floor. Mitchell said her doctor had to pick pieces of plastic and rubber out of her arm after the incident.
Mitchell, who said she got the tracker as a birthday gift, said Fitbit offered her a free replacement device after she notified the company about the apparent malfunction.
"We are extremely concerned about Ms. Mitchells report regarding her Flex 2 and take it very seriously, as the health and safety of our customers is our top priority," the company said in a statement.
We are not aware of any other complaints of this nature and see no reason for people to stop wearing their Flex 2, the company added.

Greenwich trainer competes for top fitness titles
It was just a few years ago when Stamford native and the recently named Fittest Man in Connecticut Mike Palomba tried CrossFit for the first time.
I got obliterated, said the former three-time all-conference player in baseball and football. I was immediately hooked. I wanted to go back the next day and beat everybody.
And that is pretty much what he did, Palomba said.
In the coming months, 21-year-old Palomba, who weighs 195 pounds, will use that same attitude to take on other CrossFitters in pursuit of the title Fittest Man on Earth. On CrossFits online leaderboard of individual men, the 5-foot-9-inch trainer, who is employed by CrossFit Exceed in Glenville, was ranked 20th out of more than 200,000 in the world as of Friday.
Millions of people across the world subscribe to the CrossFit workout at roughly 13,000 affiliated gyms, based on 2016 numbers. Connecticut boasts about 100 of those gyms, according to CrossFits website. Greenwich hosts two franchises within a five-minute drive.
CrossFit workouts vary, but primarily consist of intense strength and conditioning components that combine everything so youre using every single muscle and throwing all the movements together, said Palomba.
The high-intensity, ultra-competitive sport has faced its share of criticism, but that hasnt stunted its popularity, which is on display at each year at the annual Reebok CrossFit Games, at which Palomba hopes to compete. The Games, as CrossFitters often refer to it, will mark its 10th birthday in Wisconsin this summer. Athletes will vie for titles of Fittest on Earth.
Before contestants make it to the weeklong event that draws thousands of spectators, they have to qualify in regionals. Palomba, who was this month named The Fittest Man in Connecticut at another CrossFit competition, anticipates the upcoming Northeast regional in May. In Albany, N.Y., he will face off against the reigning champion of the CrossFit Games, Mathew Fraser, the son of Olympic figure skaters. Fraser took second at The Games in 2014 and 2015.
These days, Palomba splits his time between classes at Norwalk Community College, work and training two-a-days five days per week. I still have a test at 7 I have to get done today, too, Palomba said last week between workouts.
Surrounded by wall-length banners bearing messages such as: How bad do you want it, and Success isnt given, its earned, Palomba has overcome years of sports injuries to prepare himself for the series of workouts that could lead to his claiming a champion title.
Just last fall, Palomba tore his meniscus, but that barely stopped the athlete, who has broken every finger at least once and recovered from tendinitis and a gunshot wound. For legal reasons, Palomba wouldnt discuss the circumstances, but he said he was hit by a stray bullet in a public shooting. As with most of his injuries, regardless of severity, it only kept him out of the gym for a few weeks.
As Palomba describes his training plan for the The Games, its clear why nothing can keep him down he cant remain still for more than a few minutes at a time. Activity appears to be his only state as he alternates between stretching and small exercises while chatting about his motivation.
I hate to lose more than I like to win, Palomba said.
In the weeks leading up to Palombas big events, the entire CrossFit Exceed community is rallying around him, according to Maggie Felli, who has trained there since the gym opened. Everyone is amped and excited for him, she said.
Since my first class with Mike, Ive always tried to go to his classes, she said. Hes always upbeat and happy, and theres a passion with him. You can tell he believes in it.
It was for those reasons the gyms owner and Greenwich native Todd Vitale hired him, Vitale said.
I hired Mike day one when we opened, he said. He is one of the best of the best who does what he does, and he passes off his knowledge to my members. Plus, hes a low-key, good guy and not one of those testosterone gorillas.
CrossFit can be intimidating for those new to it, Vitale admitted, but Palomba reads his clients really well and makes sure people dont feel left out, he said.
When Palomba talks about his own competitiveness, his voice becomes grave. Its evident that the drive to be the best is the biggest motivator he could have, though the winnings of The CrossFit Games are nothing to dismiss. Last years individual winners for both men and women raked in $275,000 each.
If he doesnt win The Games in August, I would just feel like I want to do it all again, Palomba said. And if he wins, would he feel the need to defend his title?
I hate to say it, but yeah, Palomba responded.

Fundraiser for Colorado Springs City Auditorium combines fitness and a cause – Colorado Springs Gazette
As energetic music blared, it was difficult not to find someone with a smile on their face - even while they were exercising on an otherwise quiet afternoon in downtown Colorado Springs.
On Sunday, more than 100 people showed up in tie-dye T-shirts, sneakers and headbands to participate in a free "fitness party" hosted by TrendZ Fitness, raising money toward covering maintenance costs for the aging Colorado Springs City Auditorium.
With a suggested donation of $5, participants danced through two hours of Zumba sessions by more than a dozen instructors in the gym-like area of the downtown arena and theater at 221 E. Kiowa St. Nearby, vendors set up tables selling fitness-related products.
Last year, TrendZ Fitness held the fundraiser for the first time and raised about $700 with about 100 participants, said event organizer Don Quashie. He believes this year's event - with a "flower power" theme - was expected to raise more money because of a higher turnout.
"It's a two-hour event, that's a lot of calories burned," he said.
Quashie and TrendZ Fitness - in which he works as a Zumba instructor - decided to start a fundraiser after reading a Gazette article detailing a need to update and repair the 60,000-square-foot building that was built in 1923.
He also noted that it was a way for TrendZ Fitness to give back since the physical fitness company has held several fundraisers at the auditorium in the past last five years, including for breast cancer awareness and the Empty Stocking Fund by The Gazette and El Pomar Foundation.
"We knew we needed to do something to help because this is where we hold a lot of our events," Quashie said. "If we can do that, everyone can benefit from it."
Participants had little time for breaks.
They moved their feet and arms to energetic music while instructors led short Zumba sessions on an elevated stage.
"I love all the positivity and all the instructors who came in unity," said Rosaura Rojas-Dawson, who teaches Zumba at the Fountain YMCA.
To many, the dancing didn't seem like exercise.
"By the time you're done, you're sweating and it doesn't feel like you're doing a workout," said Amy Allen, a Zumba instructor at the Briargate YMCA.

Anytime Fitness open 24/7 on Henderson Street – Galesburg Register-Mail
Robert Connelly The Register-Mail RConnelly_
GALESBURG A new gym has been open for about a month in Galesburg and continues to grow.
Chip Staeball owns Anytime Fitness, 1964 N. Henderson St., which formerly housed Happy Joes about two years ago.
We chose that location. We liked the exposure. The landlord was real good about renovating the space from the old Happy Joes and creating a new space for Anytime Fitness, he said.
It opened on March 15 and is staffed for about eight to ten hours a day, but customers can access the gym 24/7 with a key fob.
People love the facility, the way that it is so spacious. Great free-weight area with amenities that a weight lifter would expect ... cardio that I know would be very new to the area, Staeball said.
He further said he had been eyeing the Galesburg market for about 18 months and also operates gyms in Muscatine, Burlington and Rock Falls. That means while he was looking to open here the Knox County YMCA announced, and opened, its downtown location with 24/7 access.
I knew that going in and it wasnt a major concern because we are different than a YMCA, Staeball said.
The types of services that weoffer are much different than a YMCA. Our personal training program is exclusive to Anytime Fitness. Were more of a coaching club ... were a little more welcoming towards somebody thats serious about working out.
Adam Sampson, chief executive officer of the Knox County YMCA, said another gym is welcomed in Galesburg.
Obviously were a little different than for-profit organizations where we use the profits for the community, he said.
Weve seen little to no impact to the usage and to the numbers of members since Anytime opened.
Staebell said Anytime Fitness is the first gym franchise in the country to offer a smartphone app.
You can choose that workout for the day and it will take you through all the exercises and show you examples of how the correct form and how much weight and how (many) reps, he said.
New clients meet with a professional trainer and have a plan set up, and then it is revisited about 30 days later to see where they have made progress with weight loss or increased muscle depending on the plan.
We will continue to grow, Staebell said.

Fitness Center at Portville Central targets health for the whole community – Olean Times Herald
PORTVILLE More than 1,000 people have passed through Portville Central Schools new fitness center since it opened in January.
The pace has slowed a bit now that the outdoors beckon, but it is not unusual to see 65 or 70 students working out right after classes are over for the day, according to District Superintendent Thomas Simon as he welcomed visitors to Thursday nights Fitness Center Open House. On slow days and in the spring and fall there could be 30 or 40 kids after school or athletic practice, and a before school early morning group numbering more than 20.
But school officials concerned with community health are hoping to draw adults with the schools amenities. Since the fitness facility opened in January, adults have thronged to the new facility that was part of the 2014 capital improvement project approved in a 2-1 vote that year. Snags in the State Education Departments review process delayed completion, but the communitys fondness for fitness only grew.
On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., adults have the exclusive use of the facility. A mix of adults and students in grades 7-12 can work out from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, a slot that provides a family time opportunity, officials said.
Any time of day or year, Portville Centrals Fitness Center like the ropes course, the outdoor classroom and the handicap accessible kayak launch is something that district residents, students and employees want. And its something of which the schools administrators are proud.
Thursdays event, purposely scheduled on a slow day in April, attracted a steady trickle of visitors and regulars from the community.
Annette Hill, a mother of two PCS students, said she works out during her sons track meet.
Brian Gariepy, a village resident, said he comes to the center for his health, working out three evenings a week on the stationary bikes and cardio machines, and then running on the outdoor track.
I need the track, Gariepy said. At 42, he added, he doesnt feel safe anymore running or riding his bike on the public roads while training for a triathlon.
Gina Zeigler, a PCS teacher and mother of three, said having the fitness center in the school is especially helpful for teachers.
Teachers can work off the stress, she said.
Many of the fitness enthusiasts using the center during the open house commented on the convenience of a local facility and agreed it is nicer than just about anything else in the area.

Carla Campbell, a community resident hired in January to run adult fitness classes and assist at the center Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, received CPR and nautilus training.
She said she thinks the community is getting healthier.
Matt Gnan, the schools athletic trainer for the past four years, was on hand to talk about his role in the curriculum and to show off the well-stocked therapeutic area he designed for the athletic facility.
My goal was to bring college-level sports medicine to the high school, Gnan said, noting this seems to lower the number of severe injuries in young athletes.
He and Simon say cleanliness and sanitation are key elements of the new athletic environment, and it includes providing in-house towels and laundry.

United boss Mourinho unsure of Pogba fitness for Manchester derby – Goal.com
The France international midfielder is a doubt for Thursday's clash at the Etihad Stadium after being forced off in a 2-0 victory over Burnley
Jose Mourinho confirmed Paul Pogba is a doubt for the Manchester derby in the Premier League on Thursday after suffering an injury in the 2-0 win at Burnley.
Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney goals saw United move to within a point of fourth-placed Manchester City ahead of the potentially critical derby, but Pogba limped off in the closing minutes.
Mou: EL still Man Utd's priority
United are already without Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo after the pair suffered "significant" knee ligament damage in the Europa League quarter-final against Anderlecht and Mourinho is unsure whether Pogba will recover in time to face City.
"I don't know," Mourinho said when asked about the world-record signing's fitness. "Dead he is for sure, if he's injured or if it's just the super accumulation of fatigue in the muscles, I don't know.
"But as I was saying, if he cannot play Thursday he cannot play Thursday, we play another one and we don't cry, like we didn't today."
United warmed up at Turf Moor wearing training tops bearing the names of Ibrahimovic and Rojo and Mourinho paid tribute to the duo, who are both set to undergo surgery.
Ibrahimovic, Rojo facing surgery
"We cry because we have two important injuries to two amazing guys," Mourinho said.
"But we don't cry because we lose qualities on the pitch, we just cry because they are important injuries, with two important surgeries and two important periods of recovery. And we feel for our friends."

Milwaukee woman claims fitness tracker explodes, suffers second-degree burns – WSAW
MILWAUKEE (WTMJ)-- Milwaukee resident, Dina Mitchell, suffered second-degree burns Tuesday after she said her fitness tracker exploded while she was wearing it when reading a book.
According to Mitchell, she received the device as a birthday gift. She said it malfunctioned after wearing it for two weeks.
"The Fitbit itself is totally melted," Mitchell said.
"The bracelet melted, and I got pieces of plastic burned into my arm," she continued.
According to Mitchell, the pieces of plastic she referenced had to be picked out of her wound by a doctor. Mitchell said there was no indication anything was wrong with the device prior to the explosion, and Aurora Health Care's urgent care facility in Waukesha confirms Mitchell visited the center Wednesday, the day after she said she sustained the injury.
Police: WI Woman Allowed Dogs To Eat Puppies "This a product so many people use," Mitchell said.
"My nephew, their whole class gets these from their teachers, and they wear them," she continued.
The device, however, does come with a warning. The Fitbit website cautions consumers stating:
"The device contains electrical equipment that could cause injury if not handled properly." Mitchell said she was very careful when wearing the device, but that did not prevent something from going wrong.
"If they are exploding or if there's some type of malfunction with them... I mean, I'm going to have a scar from this probably, can you imagine what it would do to a child?" Mitchell questioned.
