Machine-free gyms setting new goals for fitness freaks – The Sunday Guardian

Today, there is a greater need than ever to understand the importance of physical fitness in life, thanks to the sedentary lifestyle most of us have had to adopt due to professional reasons. Staying active and keeping your body functioning at a healthy level are of the essence.

Hitting a gym is always an option. But not everyone is comfortable with the intimidating aura of a gymnasium hall crammed with weight training and cardio machines. If you are that type, the good news is that there are machine-free gyms now operating across Delhi and NCR. The idea is to find alternatives to the old indoor excercise template and pay extra attention to free-hand workout.

Virendra Raj Singh never thought that he would come up with something like this until he set about bringing a change in this machine dominated industry. A model by profession and a certified trainer from the American Council on Exercise, Singh always focused on the natural way of attaining ones dream physique. When I was training myself, I realised that most of the gyms focused on marketing, commercialisation and membership selling, and hardly paid attention to the fitness regime. Their entire mission was to make quick money even if they have to compromise on their clients health. Also, when I was working as a trainer, I did not have the freedom to work and was to abide by certain rules and regulations of the place. I wanted to introduce manual training as I am against unnecessary use of machines. So, I was considered rebellious as I was against the management. People have forgotten that the famous Dara Singh trained himself naturally when there were no machines. Natural training is the best training, says Singh.

He opened his gym, called Strength Box, in Model Town in North Delhi in November 2016, aiming to introduce new concepts and ideas when it comes to physical fitness. Initially for the trainer, it was a challenge to attract new clients without flashy equipment and heavy machines in place. It worked in our favour as we are doing something very exclusive and more effective than machine workout. And therefore, people wanted to give it a try at least. Here, you are using your body as your own machine, exercising in a right way. It is the most natural way to lose weight and gain muscles. We use only those machines which are very, very essential to use in any workout. We dont do major workouts on machines. I train people through bodyweight and free weight workouts, says Singh.

Explaining the basics of bodyweight training and free weight workouts, Singh says, Free weight means when you use weights in your hands, shoulders to do an exercise. These weights are not assisted by machines. Bodyweight means when you are not working with any external weight but using your own body weight to work out. Machines are not compulsory.

Another fitness studio, called MADFIT Personal Training & Group Workout Studio, in Delhis Chattarpur Extension, is working on the same principle as Singhs Strength Box. Manish Ruhail, the owner of this studio says, Even though I understand the importance of equipment and why they are necessary for a lot of exercises, I opted for a machine-free fitness centre because machines bind us. Not only do they take a lot of space, they also restrict the number of exercises one can do on specific equipment. On the other hand, freestyle equipment take less space and allow us to move freely.

But for Ruhail, the challenges were of another order. The difficulty was to educate people as not many understand the meaning of functional training and know how it can help in achieving your fitness goals. The basic difference between bodyweight training and weight training is how one provides resistance to his muscles. In weight training, one increases the resistance simply by increasing the weights we put into use. However, in calisthenics (bodyweight training), we manipulate our own movements using the principles of angular training by using our own bodyweight. Use of minimal equipment or maybe even none is recommended most of the time, says Ruhail.

Similar ideas are espoused byAnand Nagaich, of Go Fitness Academy, Janakpuri. Nagaich, who is the master trainer and educator here, says, We wanted to give something which was absolutely different for people who are actively involved in the fitness circuit. We completely respect conventional gyms and weight training, but bodyweight training is something we believe can train people to become more functional and better prepared for day-to-day challenges in life. We need to agree upon one thing, that maximum movements we do during our active period of the day are done using our bodyweightitself and the rest of them are easily managed because you are still lifting/pushing or pulling significant amount of weight in bodyweight training.

Today, there are only a handful of such gyms in the national capital, but the demand for them is on the rise. We do think that that lots of people are still unaware of the benefits and effectiveness of calisthenics (or bodyweight training), and so yes, the circuit is still a bit bent towards weight training. Nevertheless the shift is happening now and people are opening up to the new regimes as well, says Nagaich.

In contrast to traditional gyms that dont provide a variety of exercise options and offer monotonous workouts, these machine-free gyms regularly endorse Tabata training whichis a high-intensity interval training workout, featuringexercisesthat last for four minutes pikes, planks, high lunges, high knees, push-ups and many which could be an entertaining and effective means to losing weight.

Meet Power Plant Gym: The first to mix fitness and marijuana – Salon

Cannabis and athletics are a pairing that produce love and confusion in equal parts for a lot of people. Marijuana is a plant with many capabilities, able to invigorate and energize you while also letting you disconnect and relax at the end of your day, all depending on your mood and mindset. Power Plant Fitness in San Francisco plans to use the properties of cannabis as a way of enhancing the performance of their members and helping them focus on their workout.

Even though Power Plant plans on giving cannabis to their members before or after their workout, as either an enhancement or a recovery tool, the gym doesnt want their business to be exclusively about marijuana. The founders want to develop an environment of wellness where marijuana will play an important role and where people will feel like they belong, while also being something more than your average gym. Power Plants instructors are equipped with the necessary knowledge on training and physiology with the purpose of giving people the greatest results available while also debunking the myth of the lazy stoner and highlighting the positive power that marijuana can produce.

What’s the best fitness watch? It’s not the Apple Watch – Recode

When buying a smartwatch, its important to consider how active you are and how active you want to be. At the low end would be someone who rarely if ever works out; at the other end are consumers like this weeks guest on Too Embarrassed to Ask, fitness wearables expert Ray Maker.

Maker is better known by his online pseudonym D.C. Rainmaker (an old Blogspot username that stuck). He reviews practically every fitness gadget on the market on his website, using his body as a test vehicle. And hes a serious athlete: Once, Maker got hit by a car mid-triathlon and finished the race with a broken femur.

I actually ran one of my fastest 10ks ever, but I couldnt walk the next day, he said.

For people who are looking for a serious fitness device, Maker recommended two of the latest watches from Garmin: The Fenix 5 or the Forerunner 935.

The maturity level is so high now and theyre not starting from scratch every time, Maker said. Theyre actually building upon their past products. A lot of products will do a whole reset every time. Like, the iPhone, when you go from version to version, youre not going backwards in time, while thats true for a lot of [wearables]: You go backwards for a few months and then you go forward.

You can listen to the new podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Play Music, TuneIn, Stitcher and SoundCloud.

For less active consumers, Maker said theres little difference between Fitbit and Garmins relatively new line of lightweight activity-tracking wristbands. And for all activity levels, he acknowledged that Garmins software is a mixed bag.

Fitbits in a little easier spot, because theyre not trying to cater to two vastly different audiences, he said. Garmin is trying to cater to someone whos not even going to run at all, just going to walk and wear this activity tracker, at the same time as someone who is an Olympic athlete and a gold medalist who is trying to get very granular data.

But I think even with that in mind, Garmin can do a heck of a lot better job on the dashboard page of the app, to see that basic data, he added.

Maker said the Apple Watch is the best smartwatch period, but not the best for fitness. And across the board, he said the companies making wearable fitness devices could be doing way more with the vast amounts of data their hardware is collecting.

Right now, you may get your summary at the end of the day: Good job! you did more steps! or it tries to add some pseudo-big data twist on it like, This is more than most people of this gender, he said. Its like, Okay, great, but what does that actually tell me? I want a watch to tell me, at 4:00 as Im getting ready to go home, Hey, this day was pretty calm, lets up your run from this to this.

Milwaukee woman claims fitness tracker explodes, suffers second-degree burns – WTMJ-TV (press release) (registration) (blog)

MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee resident, Dina Mitchell, suffered second-degree burns Tuesday after she said her fitness tracker exploded while she was wearing it when reading a book.

According to Mitchell, she received the device as a birthday gift. She said it malfunctioned after wearing it for two weeks.

"The Fitbit itself is totally melted," Mitchell said.

"The bracelet melted, and I got pieces of plastic burned into my arm," she continued.

According to Mitchell, the pieces of plastic she referenced had to be picked out of her wound by a doctor. Mitchell said there was no indication anything was wrong with the device prior to the explosion, and Aurora Health Care's urgent care facility in Waukesha confirms Mitchell visited the center Wednesday, the day after she said she sustained the injury.

"This a product so many people use," Mitchell said.

"My nephew, their whole class gets these from their teachers, and they wear them," she continued.

The device, however, does come with a warning. The Fitbit website cautions consumers stating:

"The device contains electrical equipment that could cause injury if not handled properly." Mitchell said she was very careful when wearing the device, but that did not prevent something from going wrong.

"If they are exploding or if there's some type of malfunction with them... I mean, I'm going to have a scar from this probably, can you imagine what it would do to a child?" Mitchell questioned.

In a statement sent to the TODAY'S TMJ4 Newsroom, Fitbit said:

We are extremely alarmed about Ms. Mitchell's complaint regarding her Flex2 and we are investigating the issue. We are not aware of any other complaints of this nature. In fact, based on our extensive internal and independent safety testing, we do not believe it is possible for this to occur under normal use. The quality of our products and the health and safety of our customers are our top priorities. Fitbit products are designed and produced in accordance with strict standards to ensure the safety of our users.

The Secret to Finding a Waterproof Fitness Tracker – ConsumerReports.org

For Connor Jaeger, who won the silver medal and set an American record in the 1500-meter freestyle at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, fitness trackers are less about distance and strokes and more about calculating the full impact his workouts have on his bodynot only in the pool but also on dry land.

He started using the $500 Whoop Strap fitness tracker in December 2015 and wore it every day in preparation for the Rio Games. Geared toward elite athletes, the Strap doesnt track speed and laps but rather heart-rate data, which can be used to monitor the toll that swimming, cycling, and other activities take on the body. With info like that, you can adjust your training schedule to allow ample time for recovery between workouts.

When you're training cross-discipline, everything becomes a best estimate of what your aggregate workload is, the Olympian wrote in an email. Whoop helped us say definitively just how much stress our bodies were under and how the out-of-the-water workouts were contributing to it.

This raises an important shortcoming in swim-related trackers: They rarely monitor heart rate. Thats because the water interferes with the optical technology employed by most trackers, which uses green LEDs to detect heartbeats by measuring the light reflecting from your wrist. (Blood absorbs green light and reflects red.)

Another trade-off? The trackers rarely have displays, which means you have to use a mobile app to view the results of your workouts.

In fact, that explains in part why the Misfit Shine, the Moove Now, and the Fitbit Flex 2, which offer swim-related tracking, received less-than-stellar scores in our ratings despite having excellent water resistance. All lack the versatility of trackers with heart-rate monitors and screens.

Even Apple's swim-tracking smartwatchthe Series 2which has a touch screen and delivers on its promise of water resistance to 161 feet for 10 minutes, comes with the caveat that the heart-rate sensor may not function properly in the pool.

Garmin has ventured to solve this problem with specially designed heart-rate monitor straps (the HRM-Swim and the HRM-Tri) that fit snug against the wrist and pair with its Swim smartwatch.

Of course, if you're willing to forgo competing in the Olympics (or a triathlon), you may be perfectly happy with a tracker that counts breast strokes instead of heartbeats. In that case, you should look for a tracker that claims to be swim-proof.

And, just to be certain that it meets that claim, consult our ratings. To pass our tests, a swim-proof tracker must survive for 10 minutes in the dunk tank at the equivalent of 50 feet of water.

Grand Opening of UP! Aerial Fitness – Buffalo Rising

An aerial fitness center is opening just off of Elmwood Avenue (School 56 Project). UP! Aerial Fitness is the sister school to Aerial Arts of Rochester, saysJennifer Dovidio. It is a partnership between the owners of Aerial Arts Of Rochester, myself and William Dovidio, along with Dr. Joanne Wu and Kimberly Eichorn. Joanne is long time yogi and holistic health coach and Kimberly is an award winning aerialist and special education teacher. Together we have been searching for a Buffalo location for almost 2 years and finally found the right space inside historic school #56 in the Elmwood Village.

This is great news, because this aerial yoga, trapeze, and bungee dance scene (silks, hoops and hammocks) has been growing in Buffalo dramatically. Its a trend that is wholesome and healthy, and one that attracts young people who are looking to stay in shape, develop a skill set, meditate, meet others, while doing something that is a bit out of the ordinary.

UP! Aerial Fitness opens its doors May 1st in the repurposed #56 schools gymnasium, located at 722 West Delavan Avenue.

The fitness facility will offer a variety of circus arts inspired apparatuses, addedJennifer. The classes are formatted to build skills from the ground up, allowing all ages and fitness levels to participate. Some unique offerings that are new to Buffalo would be Bungee Dance, Flybarre Trapeze and Aerial Pole.We also have a cirque performance troupe that provides aerial entertainment and has performed locally at the Seneca Niagara Casino, Lafayette Hotel and the Lockport Circus. In addition, we have a lot of fun options for families where kids can celebrate with a superhero training party or adults can experience an Aerial Adventure.

The best thing about these sorts of alternative workouts is that they are open to everyone, all skill levels, ages, etc. Theres also something about experiencing thefreeness of flight that rallies people around these activities. This is a family friendly environment, taught be practiced and certified instructors.

Our clients dont realize they are getting a great workout until class is over because they are having so much fun, says co-owner Kim Eichorn.

If youve been looking to increase your strength and flexibility, while relieving stress and gaining confidence, this place is for you! Aside from introductory workshops on Saturday mornings, and regular classes running throughout the week,UP! Aerial fitness is also perfect for birthday parties, bachelorette parties, kids camps, etc. They even have a professional cirque troupe (The UP! State Cirque Troupe) that can performat off-site locations for events.

Why does physical fitness matter so much in NASCAR? One retired … – For The Win

It might seem easy because NASCAR drivers are just sitting down, but racing is actually exceptionally strenuous.

During a race, drivers spend hours actively fighting the G-forces from 200-mile an hour speeds in 130- to 160-degree heat made worse in the summer and the South without traditional air conditioning while furiously focusing on their every move, knowing a tiny mistake could destroy their cars.

To survive these conditions nearly every weekend from February through November, drivers have to be in shape, particularly to help them during the back half of a race when they become physically and emotionally drained, 22-year Cup Series veteran Jeff Burton said.

It doesnt make you drive the car faster, said Burton, whos now an analyst for NASCAR on NBC. It allows you to drive the car faster for a longer period of time.

Ryan Newman (left) and Jimmie Johnson after their respective 2017 race wins. (Getty Images/USA TODAY Sports)

So if fitness plays such a crucial role in driver success, why are drivers like Jimmie Johnson and Ryan Newman who appear to physically be on opposite sides of the driver fitness spectrum two of the six winners in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series this season?

At NASCARs highest level, these drivers will always have the skillset to race a car. But remaining competitive is less about what they look like or how much they weigh and more reliant on endurance.

In Ryan Newmans case, hes probably a very strong person, and he doesnt train the same way that Jimmie Johnson trains, Burton explained. But at the same time, hes not sitting on the couch eating potato chips.

Although NASCAR weighs drivers at the beginning of the season and at the midway point, those numbers are not made public.

When hes not on the race track, 41-year-old Johnson who drives the No. 48 Chevrolet cross trains and is incredibly active, so meeting the team workout quota for Hendrick Motorsports is relatively easy. He skis with his family, enjoys 10-mile runs and 30-mile bike rides with teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Matt Kenseth, among others. He also does triathlons.

Johnson told Mens Fitness:

Theres a lot of jump rope between weight sets; sprints; running; and stuff where were elevating my heart rate and trying to teach my body to recover, he said. The mindset being that Ill have more energy and perform better at my job.

Alternatively, Newman who pilots the No. 31 Chevrolet is not required to meet workout requirements. But every day hes home in North Carolina, the 39-year-oldexercises by working on his 208-acre farm, according to his team, Richard Childress Racing.

He told The Virginian-Pilot in 2010 he doesnt actually see it as work.

Via The Virginian-Pilot:

They ask me if I work out because they say I look big and buff, but I dont. I do my things every day that are totally non-gym oriented. Whens the last time you dug a hole for a fencepost by hand with a post-hole digger? Most people dont do that. They dont see that as a workout.

Despite the obviously different lifestyles and regimens, the veteran drivers are nearly the same in the Cup Series driver standings. After winning the OReilly Auto Parts 500 on almost two weeks ago, Johnson jumped to No. 11 with 190 points. Newman who won the Camping World 500 in March is No. 13 with 163 points.

In Ryans case, he does not have the same body structure (as Jimmie Johnson) nor does Tony Stewart or many of the other drivers but theyre strong, Burton said. They have strength, and they have conditioned themselves to be able to do what theyre required to do.

And although Ryan Newman doesnt look like a physical specimen theres a lot of different body structures on a basketball court he has conditioned himself to do the things he needs to be able to do and do it effectively.

Still, Burton acknowledged the odds are more in a drivers favor if he or she is more physically fit when adverse conditions materialize like if there are higher than normal temperatures, the car isnt driving well or the driver is sick.

Ryan Newman (31) leads Jimmie Johnson (48) during the Folds Of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway (Matt Sullivan/Getty Images)

NASCAR rules dictate the minimum weight of the car without the driver must be 3,325 pounds although that can vary depending on the weight of the driver but teams look for every advantage and still measure car parts on a gram scale.

So being physically fit behind the wheel can also eliminate unnecessary weight holding the car back, Burton added.

It isnt that you have to be a physical specimen to do this job, Burton said. Its how long can you do it and at what percent can you give it? Thats what being in shape is all about.

Treadmill + fitness will get your motor running – The Boston Globe

Lori Haverty (standing center) keeps her clients motivated at Tread on the Mill in Reading.

Much like the Talking Heads alt-rock classic, the knock on the treadmill is that its the proverbial Road to Nowhere. Thats not true. Though users arent actually going anyplace, theyre constantly moving toward their fitness goals.

Thats particularly accurate regarding the new wave a treadmill fitness classes. These sessions, lasting 45 minutes to an hour, combine cardiovascular efforts on a treadmill interspersed with strength training.

The advantages of a tread fitness workout is really about time and efficiency for me, said Lauren Reardon of Reading. Im a busy single mom working full time. I dont have unlimited time to spend at a gym. This workout is the perfect mix of treadmill training along with a full-body floor workout that utilizes weights, bands, and my own body weight.

According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, treadmills comprise the largest selling exercise equipment category.

The day's top stories delivered every morning

Similar to spin classes the tried-and-true stationary bike treadmill fitness classes have helped super-charge this traditional piece of exercise equipment.

Treadmill fitness is interval training at its best, said Lori Haverty, co-owner of Tread on the Mill in Reading . Every five to 15 minutes, you transition between cardio intervals on the treadmill and strength-training routines on the floor. You efficiently strengthen all muscle groups, maximize calorie burn, and increase endurance. Like a spin class, we work together to the beat of the music and the room is thumping with positive energy.

Haverty and business partner Tiffany Freitas opened Tread on the Mill in December, complimenting a second studio Tread Cycle & Small Group Training also in Reading.

When Tiffany moved back after 10 years in Los Angeles, we both knew this was something special and wanted to bring it to the North Shore, said Haverty. In LA, this is an incredibly popular workout. We did a lot of research there and brought the best elements to Reading with some of our unique brand to the classes.

However, these classes are available throughout eastern Massachusetts. The Orangetheory Fitness chain, for example, has studios in Brighton, Burlington, Danvers, Dedham, Marlborough, and Natick.

The great part about treadmill fitness is that it is great for all fitness levels, said Sabrina Checca, head trainer at Orangetheorys Natick studio. Whether youre running, jogging, or power walking, youre still getting a great workout in.

By wearing the heart rate monitor, youre able to tell if youre working hard enough, too hard, or not hard enough, said Checca. This helps you to adjust your speed and incline accordingly to whats best for you and your level of fitness.

Unlike using a treadmill at home, classes provide motivation, not only from instructors but other participants as well.

There are so many benefits of working out in a group versus solo, said Quincys Kina Coutavas, head trainer at Orangetheory in Dedham. First, it takes a very dedicated individual to push themselves as hard as you would when you have a coach watching you and other people moving around you. Some members really thrive on the competition. Seeing how far they can push themselves against others is a serious motivator.

For Lynnfields Kristen Elworthy, the class setting prevents any lapses in commitment.

I push way harder on that treadmill next to someone else than I would on my own, she said. No one is judging, but I think we all know when we see other people doing the work, its harder to slack off.

Readings Annette Najarian has had a similar experience.

Being in a group setting, working out alongside other people, you definitely feed off of the energy in the room, she said. Any age or fitness level can participate successfully setting, reaching, and even surpassing any personal goals with the support and encouragement of your instructors and peers. In any tread class, youll often see mothers and daughters working out together, husbands and wives, friends, neighbors, [and] co-workers.

Elworthy said the classes are designed to be inclusive, to help overcome any sense of self-consciousness.

I think a lot of people feel intimidated by these types of classes if they havent done them and dont know what to expect, said Elworthy. The biggest thing to emphasize is that youre going at your own pace. Theres encouragement to push yourself, but never pushiness from the instructors.

In addition to being cheerleaders, instructors keep the classes fresh by incorporating variety, both in the pace and in the routines.

Theyre always mixing it up, said Lisa Tango of Reading. Some classes may be more focused on the speed, others on the grade. They use intervals that make the time fly by.

An infectious soundtrack, said participants, is another bonus.

We believe in contagious motivation, said Haverty. Getting on a treadmill and running is boring. Going to a class with 25 other people, lights going, music pumping, and a great instructor preaching, is a blast.
