This Startup Is Building A Fitness Tracker For The Planet – Fast Company
It seems like everything is tracked and measured these days. Order a pizza, and you get a notification when its put in the oven. Curious about how many times an NBA player (any player) dribbles per possession? That information is neatly presented on the leagues official site. Even dreams are being produced, collected, and analyzed as part of our quantified self data.
One startup is working on tracking something more ambitious: the planet. Instead of measuring basic heart rate or blood pressure, Descartes Labs is applying machine learning to both public and private satellite imagery to determine rates of deforestation, forecast food supplies, identify where new wind farms are being constructed, and more.
The company, which spun out of Los Alamos National Lab, has access to a massive archive of satellite imagery sourced from NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and other commercial constellations. The archive goes back decades and grows larger every daycurrently, it houses five petabytes of data (thats 5million gigabytes).
Its really an inherently good data set. Its hard to imagine that the data were generating, like deforestation data, can be used for some sort of nefarious purpose, right? At some point, everybody ought to know this data, because its just data about the world we live in, CEO and cofounder Mark Johnson tells Fast Company.
Every day, Descartes Labs AI reads and processes nearly five terabytes of new data, including weather readings and the latest imagery from satellites orbiting the planet. Analyzing quadrillions of pixels at a time, and comparing it to past data, its fully automated algorithms can determine, for example, whether a field is growing corn, or soy, or something else like turnips, as well as how much of it has already sprouted. Infrared readings allow the AI to determinethe health of a given crop, too.
Why the hell dont we know exactly how many trees have been cut down over the past 40 years? [Image: courtesy Descartes Labs]Johnson says this allows his team to accurately peer into the future of the planet. For example, Descartes Labs AI says it can predict the yield of Americas 3million square kilometers of cornfields with 99% accuracy.
Investors always ask, Whats the secret sauce on your corn model? says Johnson. And I always tell them, You wont like this, but theres no secret algorithm. Its really that weve taken more data than anyone else, cleaned it up better than anyone else, and ran more iterations on it than anyone else.
That tool has obvious applications outside U.S. borders, too, for both governments and private companies. With the aid of a just-awarded $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Descartes Labs is now using its technology to anticipate food shortages and predict hot zones of sociopolitical conflict in the Middle East and North Africa.
This is the kind of work we wanted to do as a company as we founded it, says Johnson. We have 40-plus years of imagery on the planet. We can start to see, even without weather effects, how the climate has changed based on whats growing there and whats not. Drought and famine precede and oftentimes are big drivers in political instability. Better understanding those patterns is key.
We have 40-plus years of imagery on the planet. We can start to see, even without weather effects, how the climate has changed. [Image: courtesy Descartes Labs]Better understanding those patterns right now is critical. As many as 20 million people around world are already on the brink of famine, and well have to feed as many as 2billion more people over the next three decades.
Its much cheaper to send in humanitarian resources than troops. And nipping [causes of conflict] in the bud is not only good for the people on the ground, because theyre happier and healthier, and child mortality rates goes down, but also you avoid future problems.
At the same time, Descartes Labs is trying to democratize its data, putting its tools in the hands of both humanitarian organizations that can intervene early enough to save lives, as well as leaders at every level of government so that they can make better decisions about how to allocate resources. But Johnson made it clear that he wants this information to be accessible to everyone, not just people with PhDs in machine learning or elected representatives, so his 30-person team is investing in artificial intelligence that can better classify and categorize new satellite imagery as it comes in, and make it easier to read.
What were focusing on is making it easy for people from the outside world to use the infrastructure weve built, he says. ESAand NASA are both putting up lots of really interesting Earth observation satellitestons of data is being generated. And thats not to mention all the potential sensor data well be getting from combines, tractors, cars, boats, barges, trains, ships, grain silo. Everything is going to have sensors on it, so making sense of all that data is the sort of challenge were aiming toward.
Descartes Labs isnt trying to tackle this challenge alone. As part of their push to open up the platform, the team was part of a hackathon with theNational Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), where they made the platform available to participants to explore how geospatial analysis can be used to study food security.
Everything is going to have sensors on it, so making sense of all that data is the sort of challenge were aiming toward. [Image: courtesy Descartes Labs]There are 150 million square kilometers of dry land on earth; more than twice that area is covered by water. Greater awareness of how bothland and sea are managed, Johnson hopes, will foster a more symbiotic relationship, even intimacy, between human and planet. In practice, the work of Descartes Labsand that of other companies like marine data analytics company Windwardmight encourage businesses to restructure their value chains and even guide our global village toward new approaches to climate action.
Why the hell dont we know exactly how many trees have been cut down over the past 40 years? This is this is something where we have the data to answer that question, says Johnson.
To me, this is critical for our future on the planet right. Decisions we make now could have massive repercussions for generations to come. And I want to be armed with a massive amount of data. I want to know where we should marshal our resources to be most effective in protecting the resiliency of humanity.

What It REALLY Means to Build a Functional Fitness Community – BarBend (blog)
In the modern era of exercise, health, and wellness, functional fitness is the new craze. Many of the old powerhouse globo gyms have seen a large drop off in memberships to smaller, community based fitness facilities. Whether their clients have gone to CrossFit, Soul Cycle, Orangetheory Fitness, or one of the many other types of boutique gyms, one thing is clear: community based functional fitness is the new craze, and its here to stay.
The question some might be asking themselves is, Why have so many people gone toward a group fitness training model, and what exactly does a fitness community entail?
At Westchester Fit (formerly known as CrossFit Westchester), over the past seven years weve been centrally focused on the client experience. From the first impression when a client walks into the gym, until the time class is done, the goal has always been to make this the best hour of someones day. We are literally trying to melt their stress away.
This is not just about physical exercise, but also about obtaining mental clarity and peace of mind when someone is done with class. The community is a place where the vulnerable feel comfortable to fail as often as they succeed. Its through failure that true growth occurs, and our mission has been to create a place where this is not only acceptable, but where pushing yourself is encouraged, as that is where progress is made. At the end of the day the community is a place where friends of all ages and walks of life come together to workout with one common goal in mind, be better than yesterday. The euphoria and sense of accomplishment our members feel creates an addiction to our program.
Outside of the culture, people gravitate towards functional fitness for the physical results. You might ask yourself, why would anyone go into a group fitness class, if they can workout on their own for a fraction of the cost at a globo gym?
Theres something really powerful about groups and shared experiences. People might be skeptical about their ability to change if theyre by themselves, but a group will convince them to suspend disbelief. A community creates belief. Duhigg, The Power of Habit
Working out as part of a community not only helps to keep people motivated, but there is a certain level of accountability that will never be experienced by training alone. The camaraderie and relationships built help to create intensity and purpose in ones workouts which yield results.
In addition, the classes are always led by an instructor who is there to motivate and educate the athletes. There is a sense of semi-private personal training within the group model. The top functional fitness facilities will always make their clients feel as if theyre receiving personal attention, which is paramount for retention. Lastly, in these communities the good coaches actually care if you show up. The old model of having people pay and hoping they dont show up is gone. Its flipped the industry upside down.
The tides in the fitness industry are always shifting, and while functional fitness is impacting health clubs memberships around the world, it is important for their business owners to be light on their feet and be able to shift their focus when needed.
Seven years ago, CrossFit gyms only offered CrossFit. Gyms that havent adapted with the changing tide have now fallen off. Offering additional services such as weightlifting, endurance, gymnastics, mobility, and non-barbell classes to name a few have set the larger gyms apart.
The ability to cater to the community and their shifting needs is what will keep these business around for the long haul. People have already grown accustomed to high intensity training, and the good feeling received from the workouts; the way to keep the community alive and thriving is always ensuring that the services offered are in line with client demand. Ruling the gym with an iron fist will eventually lead people to seek services outside of your facility, even if they have grown to love you and your staff.
Make the choice easy for them to stay by offering what your community wants, and not just what you want.

According to Warners attorney, Shawn Holley, shes been battling insomnia, which prompted her to be under the influence of a prescribed sleep aid.
'RHONY' STAR LUANN D'AGOSTINO'S DAUGHTER VICTORIA ARRESTED FOR DWI
We have letters and reports from Jackies doctors which prove a long history of insomnia and which strongly support our contention that Jackie was driving unconscious after taking Ambien, which had been prescribed to her, Holley toldTMZ.
I reached out to the D.A.s Office weeks ago and was assured that deputies would review our reports before filing charges," Holley added. "We are extremely disappointed that the D.A.s Office filed these charges without reviewing our evidence, as promised.
The West Los Angeles Sheriff told E! News that there were no injuries and that Warners vehicle rolled back, prompting it to hit a police car. Warner got out of the car without issue and was reportedly compliant with officials on the scene before the arrest. Police arent sure how the car rolled back and the case has been assigned to a detective.

This isnt the first time Warner has faced trouble.
After her reality TV series, Work Out, ended on Bravo in 2010, she sold her Beverly Hills gym. On her website, Warner revealed that after she turned 40, she fell into [a] crisis.
I didnt like doing the type of TV that I was doing, which made me uncomfortable and uneasy, wrote Warner. I had succeeded in many ways, but always had very tumultuous relationships, which caused me quite a lot of misery. Shortly thereafter, I sold my clinic and gym and found myself wondering whats next? My last TV show didnt do well and the shooting conditions were so bad that I vowed never to do television again unless it was a fully positive experience."
Warner also added that she quit drinking for a year and I quit dating for a year, as well as relied on prayer to help her find a new purpose in life. Warner insisted that after hitting the gym more, she was mentally and physically stronger than I have ever been in my life.

Fitness guru Richard Simmons hospitalised – Starts at 60
Fitness guru Richard Simmons has been taken to hospital after complaining of severe indigestion.
Spokesman Michael Catalano has told ABC News US his client has been taken to an undisclosed hospital in California, After a few days of battling severe indigestion and discomfort while eating. His condition has since improved and he is expected to fully recover.
The normally energetic personality first developed an interest in fitness after being obese as a teen. He appeared on a number of television shows, from General Hospital to CHiPs and Saturday Night Live, but is well known for his own, The Richard Simmons Show, as well as the range of aerobics videos he has produced.

Juice Bar New Hub of Fitness Culture – The Arkanas Traveller
Clean cut wood-finished panels, bright hanging lights and succulents stand out when first entering Nutrition Hog, a local fitness-promoting nutritional shake bar. But its the quality of its health drinks that seems to make it stand out among the growing fitness culture of the town.
Nutrition Hog provides a series of drinks as well as free wellness tests at their new location. It also is coming in something different then most fitness clubs of Fayetteville: a tea bar with meal replacement protein shakes, plus tea and aloe, all of which are pharmaceutical grade products.
I wanted something that was easier, cheaper and good for me, owner Dean Martinez said, as he describes his inspiration behind opening the business. I got into optimum nutrition for the best price.
The teas and protein shakes vary in the types of flavors, such as birthday cake and cookie dough, that are offered but the products they offer are set apart from others, Dean Martinez said.
We use a green tea leaf extract rather than the coffee bean, Martinez said. Its different from the bean since the tea leaf gives more of a steady increase of energy along the way unlike the high spike and then crash that the bean gives.
These teas actually burn calories when being consumed. They are shown to have quick results with weight loss as well, Martinez said. In as little as three days, there has been a few inches of weight lost around the waist, he said.
The different teas as well as the aloe shots and various different shakes are really drawing the crowd in, he said.
Wife and co-owner Cherry Martinez said there was a big boom with the business when it opened at the Grove Drive location March 6.
Right now, were cooling off, Cherry Martinez said. It all started with one post and then we exploded.
The new Nutrition Hog location was inspired by the owner of the original location on Township, Rick Hall, Cherry Martinez said.
One of the main mottos of Nutrition Hog is said to be affirming people where they are and growing them from there, Cherry Martinez said.
We love to empower people, Cherry Martinez said.
The clubs also works with sororities and other organizations for percentage nights and other activities, she said.
The percentage nights are cool because they not only give back to the charities of the organizations, but it in turn helps us attract business, Cherry Martinez said.
This business attracts students on normal nights too, he said.
This is my second time coming here and I really like coming here because I feel healthy without having to work out, senior Peyton Cashion said.
Not only do people like the health benefits they also like the tastes of the shakes and teas, Dean Martinez said.
The shakes taste like ice cream, senior Anna Travis said. The teas are sweeter but they are still good.
The success of Nutrition Hog in Fayetteville inspired the Martinezes to open a location in Romania, and they are hoping to donate proceeds to help stop sex-trafficking of girls there, Dean Martinez said.
We really want to help give the opportunity to people who dont necessarily have it, Dean Martinez said.
Not only is Nutrition Hog trying to attract business with their selection of drinks, but they hope to encourage health and overall fitness too, she said.
Nutrition Hog is located off of Wedington Drive on Grove Drive near Planet Fitness. Its hours are from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Bayern Munich hopeful on fitness of Hummels, Boateng, Lewandowski – ESPN FC
The FC crew preview the second-legs of the UCL quarterfinals, including Real Madrid's 'game-changers' against Bayern. Carlo Ancelotti is confident Jerome Boateng will be fit to play Real Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League. Carlo Ancelotti expects to see Bayern Munich put their loss to Real Madrid behind them when they face Leverkusen. Sid Lowe finds Real Madrid to be a Champions League enigma, at times under-performing yet proving their brilliance. Bayern Munich's Carlo Ancelotti remains defiant about their chances of qualification despite a home loss to Real Madrid.
Carlo Ancelotti has said Robert Lewandowski will definitely play for Bayern Munich, who are confident defenders Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng can both overcome injuries in time to face holders Real Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinal second leg on Tuesday.
Lewandowski has scored 38 goals in all competitions this season -- including seven in eight Champions League games. However, Bayern's top scorer missed the first leg in Munich and has not featured since landing heavily on his right shoulder against Borussia Dortmund on April 8. The Poland striker scored four goals for former club Dortmund against Jose Mourinho's Madrid side in the 2013 semifinals.
Ancelotti confirmed at the prematch news conference in the Bernabeu: "Everything is fine with Lewandowski; he's trained without any problem. He's fit."
Ancelotti's side must overturn a 2-1 defeat from last Wednesday's first leg to progress, but Bayern's boss believes the return of their star striker gives Bayern a real boost.
"It will help us that Lewandowski can play. He is a super player, a top goalscorer and gives us more confidence," he said.
The news was also encouraging regarding Germany's 2014 World Cup-winning defensive partnership, Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels, who both face late fitness tests in a bid to make the second leg.
Hummels picked up an ankle injury in training last Sunday, while Boateng missed the weekend's Bundesliga goalless draw at Bayer Leverkusen with an adductor problem.
"Both Jerome and Mats trained individually yesterday, but they need a test with the ball. They both have good chances to play, but we will see how they are tomorrow morning."
Both Hummels and Boateng, as well as Lewandowski, took part in Bayern's public training session on Monday -- the first 15 minutes of which were open to the media in the Bernabeu.
Ancelotti added: "We are disadvantaged after the defeat in Munich. We will have to play fantastically to progress and will have to play our best cards tomorrow."
Speaking about potential scorelines in Bayern's favour: "A 2-0 would be good, also a 3-2," Ancelotti said.
"There are many permutations, but we must see how the game develops. Real can always score a goal, when Cristiano Ronaldo finds a yard of space then he scores. We must take care of the minute details -- that is what will decide tomorrow."
Ancelotti led Los Blancos to La Decima in 2014, beating Bayern 5-0 in the semifinals along the way. Asked about his return to the Bernabeu: "I don't know how I feel tomorrow in the stadium, but I had two good years here with lots of lovely memories. I will never forget them."

Popular Fitness Model Bares Cellulite and Imperfections to Inspire Followers – Yahoo Health
Nicole Mejia, a fitness model and guru on social media, reveals her personal body issues to inspire followers. (Photo: Instagram)
Nicole Mejia found popularity and fame on Instagram as a fitness model, gathering well over 1 million followers as she showed off her shapely curves. Now, the creator of the #FitAndThick franchise revealed in a new Instagram post that her journey is shifting from physical beauty to overall acceptance and health.
Mejia, who hails from Pembroke Pines, Fla., began her modeling career eight years ago at the urging of friends and has worked with some top commercial brands and magazine outlets. Using an affable approach to fitness and body positivity, Mejia candidly revealed her own struggles with body acceptance in one of her recent Instagram posts and explained that Fit and Thick is about more than looking the part.
From Mejias post: Time for me to get real with you guys. My body fat percentage is currently the highest that its been since I started Fit and Thick. Funny thing is, so is my happiness and self-acceptance. When I was on my quest to look the part of entering the fitness industry, I ended up losing what fitness was for me in the first place. It never used to be about looking a certain way, but about the mental clarity and emotional release that I was able to achieve after an hour of pushing my body past what I thought I was capable of.
Unabashedly showing skin in a light green bikini, Mejia didnt shy away from revealing examples of cellulite, both up close and at a distance. That boldness isnt uncommon for Mejia, who has posted images of herself without makeup or in the middle of workouts looking less than glamorous but with her usual upbeat attitude.
Mejia concluded in her vulnerable post that shes embarking on a new set of goals for fitness but is moving past the desire to look good in a two-piece. Instead, shes making it her mission to inspire others on their journeys.
Mejia was the target of a lawsuit in early 2016 by an ex-manager who alleged that the model failed to pay a percentage of her revenue in return for putting her on the scene. The case seemingly came and went, and it didnt slow any of Mejias momentum this year. Mejias Fit and Thick brand was created in 2013, culminating into an app that designs workout plans, videos, and meal suggestions along with other fitness aids.
The 28-year-old has famously bragged in past interviews that her body carried the proper amount of fat and muscle, which gave credence to her pride in her natural curves and made her a popular figure for her 1.4 million followers.
