HEALTH AND FITNESS: Seven habits of highly healthy people – Aiken Standard

Most common health problems, including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and many cancers, are linked to health habits such as smoking, what you eat and how active you are. Changing these behaviors can have a big impact on your health and feelings of wellbeing.

There is no one right way to create a healthy lifestyle, but there are some habits that are common among healthy people. Here are seven habits of highly healthy people.

There is no way around this one quit! Ask your doctor about prescription and over-the-counter medications that can make quitting easier. Ultimately, though, quitting smoking is a behavior change that takes motivation, willpower, social support and time.

Prolonged sitting has been linked to negative health effects that are similar to those of not exercising. The good news is that you can offset the health effects of sitting too much at work and at home by taking short breaks to get up and move.

You should strive to be as active as possible throughout the day. At a minimum, aim for 30 minutes of activity each day, but more is better. You can meet this goal by taking the dog for a walk, playing with your kids (or grandkids), and doing housework or yard work. Even using the stairs instead of the elevator or parking farther away and walking to your destination are good ways to make activity a habit.

While being active on a daily basis is a good goal, there are additional benefits of doing structured exercise. This could include walking, running, or cycling outdoors, visiting a fitness center, a group exercise class, or a doing exercise at home. In addition to improving endurance, strength, and flexibility, regular exercise helps with weight control, can lower blood pressure, and helps prevents and treat diabetes.

Healthy eating isnt necessarily about eating less or avoiding certain foods, its about making smart choices when you shop, cook or eat out. Eating fresh and minimally-processed foods, more fruits and vegetables, and less added sugar and salt are good ways to eat smart. Learning about the food you eat and cooking meals at home more often is another common recommendation.

Chronic stress can have serious emotional, psychological and physiological effects that lead to or exacerbate many health problems. While it is impossible to avoid all stress in life, minimizing stressors and managing the way you respond to stress can have important benefits.

Regular exercise, including yoga, managing time better and getting enough sleep, can help with minimizing your feelings of stress as well as the effects it has on your body.

Keeping track of your health status and habits can help you set goals, evaluate your progress and prevent surprises, like sudden weight gain. Some of these are measurements your doctor will make including blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose. Others you can complete yourself like your weight, what you eat and what you do for activity. It works, too: Research shows that people who weigh themselves regularly are better able to maintain weight loss.

Adopting these seven habits can help you prevent and treat many chronic diseases. Some of these behaviors may be difficult to change. But keep in mind that you dont have to be perfect even small changes can add up to big health benefits!

Prosper health and fitness competition enters final weeks – Star Local Media

The time-tested custom of trying to knock off the reigning champion has reached the ITS TIME TEXAS Community Challenge, as not one but two cities are doing their best to take the statewide title from Prosper.

The ITS TIME TEXAS Community Challenge is the statewide competition to determine the healthiest towns and cities in the state. Its designed to encourage residents, mayors, schools, businesses, churches and organizations to adopt healthy habits by offering incentives, including a trophy, and a cash prize of $1,800. Prosper is the current champ in the small-town category.

Prosper mayor Ray Smith, never one to leave a challenge unanswered, has declared his intention to repeat as the competitions statewide champion in the small community category.

Mayor Marcus Knight in Lancaster has thrown down the gauntlet. Hes committed to beating us, said Smith. Then, Trophy Club entered the fray and its now a three-way race. Im confident, though, that Prosper residents, schools, churches and businesses are up to the challenge. Were in it to win it.

Cities and towns win by amassing the most points in the competition. Points are accumulated by residents, school officials, clergy and businesses who register on http://www.ittcommunitychallenge.com and return to their accounts on that site to upload healthy selfies, track their weight loss, monitor their workouts and complete the appropriate pledges. One of the last events set to add more points to the Towns total is Windsong Ranchs Bliss Fest on Saturday, March 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

We have a very healthy community, with sports teams galore, a Town Council thats committed to providing opportunities for health promotion, a Parks and Recreation Department second to none, a school district that consistently excels academically and on the sports fields, and a population that understands the importance of healthy living, he said. There is no reason we should not win this every year.

The competition ends on March 31, when the final tally of points is conducted and the winner is declared. Mayor Smith has recorded several videos in support of the campaign, and a number of local fitness and exercise centers have also stepped up their participation. The Parks and Recreation Department is taking the lead in encouraging full participation.

Were doing what we can, but ultimately, its the residents, pastors, school officials, businesses and other partners who will determine the winner, added the mayor. I have confidence that we can do it, but everyone has to pitch in. Getting healthy, developing good wellness habits and staying in shape are all positive consequences of the program. And, of course, winning the challenge would be great.

Input into the challenge will continue until midnight, March 31.

Report: UCal Berkeley leader got fitness freebies – Lowell Sun

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) -- The outgoing leader of the University of California's Berkeley campus improperly accepted free benefits, mostly related to personal fitness, an investigation found.

A report released Friday was heavily blacked out, but the readable portions said Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks didn't pay for $5,000 worth of a gym membership and 48 personal training sessions. He also had an elliptical exercise machine worth at least $3,500 installed at home, the Los Angeles Times reported (goo.gl/meb7Mh).

The investigation concluded in September, but the report was kept private for six months.

UC ethics rules bar employees from the unauthorized use of campus resources or facilities or the "entanglement" of private interests with UC obligations.

UC spokeswoman Dianne Klein said Dirks has apologized and repaid the money.

Dirks, who declined to comment, will step down June 30.

Dirks took office as UC Berkeley's 10th chancellor on June 1, 2013, and during his tenure launched major initiatives to strengthen undergraduate education and to optimize fundraising. But he came under fire for allegedly being too lenient when handling sexual harassment cases involving high-profile faculty.

In one case, Sujit Choudhry, the former dean of the law school, received only a temporary pay cut and orders to undergo counseling as punishment after an investigation substantiated claims that he repeatedly kissed and touched a subordinate.

Dirks has said he plans to become a full-time professor at the university.

Last week, Carol T. Christ, a scholar of Victorian literature and former president of Smith College, was named the next chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley by the UC Board of Regents.

She will be the first woman in the school's 149-year history to hold the position.

4 Ways to Handle Your Fitness Setbacks (and Keep Moving Forward) – The Good Men Project (blog)

Perhaps you didnt lose weight as quick as you expected or your business isnt taking off as much as you expected.

Each and every one of us will experience a setback and disappointment in life, its unavoidable.

Setbacks are a normal part of life, especially when it comes to our health and fitness.

Setbacks arent the same as a failure. Failure is only when you wave the white flag and give up. Setbacks and difficult obstacles are what makes you a better man and separates you from the average man who isnt striving to better himself.

Setbacks are a necessary part of your journey of growing because to level up in your career, fitness, and relationships require you to step outside of your comfort zone.

How you handle these obstacles is the difference between moving forward, achieving your goals, and getting exactly what you want out of life.

You cant choose what life throws your way, but you can choose how youll react in each of those situations.

As Henry Ford remind us, Life is a series of experiences, each one of which makes us bigger, even though sometimes it is hard to realize this. For the world was built to develop character, and we must learn that the setbacks and grieves which we endure help us in our marching onward.

Here are four ways to handle your fitness setback (and other life setbacks) and not let it stop you on your journey to bettering yourself.

First and foremost, its important to realize that things happen. You can prep and think about all the potential scenarios that could get in the way of your fitness goals, but the unexpected will always happen.

If you never experience any setbacks or obstacles along the way, are you actually pushing yourself as much as you could? Losing weight, building muscle, or any other fitness goal brings about its fair share of adversity. Let this adversity become a useful lesson that will only make you a better man in the long run. Speaking of that

After accepting the situation for what it is and not letting yourself wallow in the past, its time to learn from this situation.

Take a moment to put things into perspective and investigate why this particular situation happened. Maybe your nutrition wasnt good this week. But, why wasnt it good?

Was it due to lack of boundaries this week, not being prepared, or other stressful events in life that caused this lack of ideal habits?

You past week of nutrition cant be altered, but you can use that experience to become more self-aware of your psychology that plays a pivotal role in your behaviors.

George Santayana states that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

While the past provides lessons to implement for the future, its important to not get trapped in the past. Dwelling over the past only brings about guilt, shame, regret, doubt, and self-loathing which arent conducive to making you a better and healthier man. Shifting to the future only brings about anxiousness and numerous what if scenarios.

Your actions and mindset need to be focused on the present momentwhich ultimately is the engineering factor into a desirable future.

By focusing on the present moment, youre becoming process oriented which is completely under your control. Being process oriented keeps you from being overwhelmed with the variables of the future.

The glass is always full, not half empty because the air takes up the other half. Things could always be worse. Focus on the opportunities in front of you and what has gone right for you instead of what isnt going well.

Maybe the weight isnt coming off as quick as you like, but think about where you were months ago (and even a year ago). Odds are youre in a better position that you were then.

Therefore progress has been made, maybe not at your preferred rate, but progress is still progress.

Antonio Giovinazzi to race Sauber as fitness issues stop Wehrlein – FOXSports.com

Italian rookie Antonio Giovinazzi will stand in for Pascal Wehrlein for the rest of the weekend after the German admitted he didnt feel fit enough to do a race distance.

Ferraris third driver Giovinazzi will thus get a chance to make his F1 debut after testing for the Swiss team in Barcelona.

Ferrari protgs Giovinazzi and Charles Leclerc have both been linked with FP1 running for Sauber and Haas, with the Sauber reserve role obviously of interest to the latter given the potential problems for Wehrlein.

Pascal Wehrlein stressed that his withdrawal was purely due to concerns over his fitness, and that there are no issues with his back injury, sustained in the Race of Champions in January.

Although he had been approved to compete this weekend by the FIA, it was while doing long runs in Friday practice that Wehrlein realized that his preparation had been badly compromised, and that he would struggle to perform at his best over the race.

He told the Sauber team in the post FP2 briefing, Ferrari agreed that Giovinazzi could drive, although the FIA paperwork for the Italian was only completed at 3 a.m. Australian time.

I just feel like I cant do the whole race at my best performance, thats what I told the team yesterday, said Wehrlein. So we decided together that it would be best to skip this race, to not take any risks, and to be back then in China.

Wehrlein admitted that his training had been badly disrupted by his recovery.

The injury happened I think nine weeks ago, and that was the time where you just have to prepare as good as you can for the season. It took me a step backwards, of course, the injury, and now Im just catching up. I felt like everything was OK, but just not for the whole race distance.

You never drive under race circumstances, and yesterday in the car in the long run you feel it more than in testing or in shorter runs. I just told the team yesterday in the meeting that I cant do the whole race at my best performance.

Fitness Connection is latest addition to Shops at Tech Ridge – MyStatesman.com

Posted: 12:00 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2017

RD Management took ownership of Shops at Tech Ridge, 12901 N. Interstate 35, last year.

This will be the second Fitness Connection in Austin. The first is near Lakeline Mall.

A New York real estate firm is wasting no time filling up empty storefronts at a North Austin shopping center it recently acquired.

RD Management last year took ownership of Shops at Tech Ridge, 12901 N. Interstate 35, shortly after a SuperTarget store closed, leaving more than 100,000 square feet of space vacant.

First, RD Management and The Retail Connection, which handles leasing for the center, landed Floor & Dcor, a flooring superstore. Now, they say Fitness Connection is also on the way.

The gym will occupy 55,000 square feet in the 504,154-square-foot center.

This will be the second Fitness Connection in Austin. The first is near Lakeline Mall in Northwest Austin.

Fitness Connection is one of the newest and fastest growing health club chains in the U.S., and we are eager to bring a facility that offers top-notch fitness classes, personal training and nutritional services to the community, said Richard Birdoff, principal and president of RD Management. We are working diligently to bring in additional businesses of this caliber to Shops at Tech Ridge that will best serve Austins rapidly growing population.

Theres still some space in the former SuperTarget building that needs filling, and RD Management is also planning to construct two freestanding buildings for businesses such as banks or restaurants. There has been a high level of interest for the balance of this space, RD Management and The Retail Connection said.

We have very much enjoyed this collaborative project with RD Management, said Lance Morris, president of The Retail Connection in Austin. Shops at Tech Ridge represents a unique chance to bring our two companies expertise together to curate a diverse tenant mix of home dcor, apparel, fitness and other key retailer categories in an established open shopping center in North Austin.

Center lands tenants

Springdale General, an East Austin commercial development geared toward makers and creatives, has secured its first two tenants.

Caffe Medici coffeehouse and the Notley Group have both signed multi-year leases at the project, at 1023 Springdale Road, according to the developer, Central Austin Management Group.

The mission of Springdale General is to provide affordable, flexible space for our creative communities and The Notley Group and Caffe Medici are the perfect tenants to attract other like-minded businesses in the community, said Central Austin Management Group founder Daryl Kunik.

The Notley Group, which offers funding and support to businesses working toward positive change in the world, will base its new Center for Social Innovation at Springdale General.

The concept behind Springdale General aligns perfectly with what we are trying to achieve with the Center for Social Innovation, said Notley Group founder Dan Graham.

The first 40,000 square feet of space in the Springfield General development should be ready this fall. When fully complete early next, the entire project will span 165,000 square feet.

Mueller gets fit

Add Barre3 and Orangetheory Fitness to the ever-growing list of businesses bound for Austins Mueller development.

Theyll be in the same Aldrich Street building that houses Alamo Drafthouse.

Barre3 plans a May opening, while Orangetheory Fitness is aiming for a summer debut.

Ive had my eye on the Mueller community for some time now, said Emily Ballenger, owner of the Mueller Barre3. Ive watched it grow and Ive seen the number of people on the trails and in the parks who share my passion for health and wellness. Im teaching pop-up and community free classes before we open, and the response has been incredible. The residents and local businesses are so supportive, and everyone is really excited about our Aldrich Street studio. Im looking forward to welcoming the community to our space in the coming months.

The express lane

Randalls has started construction on a new grocery store and gas station in Georgetown. It will be in the soon-to-open Oak Meadows Marketplace shopping center at 5721 Williams Drive. Randalls said it expects to make its debut by years end. March openings at Domain Northside include Joie boutique, Lily Rain, Velvet Taco, Toulouse Caf & Bar and Hat Creek Burger Co. The Blue Starlite drive-in movie theater has relocated from East Austin to 12419 Lowden Lane in South Austin. Amenities include an expanded concession stand, improved restroom facilities and a more advanced digital projection system. Chair King is shutting down its Central Austin store, located at 1201 Barbara Jordan Blvd. in the Mueller development. The furniture chains Lakeline and Lakeway stores will remain open. The Quiznos sub shop at 3637 Far West Blvd. in West Austin has closed. My Attic Self Storage, 1602 W. Pecan St. in Pflugerville, and Store Here Self Storage, 8956 Research Blvd. in North Austin, have both teamed up with U-Haul to offer rentals of moving trucks and other equipment.
