Under Armour joins with charity to promote fitness – WTOP

WASHINGTON Want your kids to improve their grades? Getting them to exercise may help.
And this week,Baltimore-based Under Armour sponsored donations of sports equipment to four area schools:Kelly Miller Middle School and Ross Elementary Schoolin D.C., and New Song Academy and Jeffers Hill Elementary in Baltimore.
You should see some of the research.Kids who are active every day versus kids who are not theyre doing dramatically better in school, said Jim Baugh, founder of PHIT America.
PHIT (Personal Health Investment Today) uses money from corporations and individual donors to bolster school physical education programs with things such as sports equipment, curricula, training and, in some cases, transportation.
We gotta get these kids moving, so it pumps blood to their brain and they learn better, Baugh said. The sit-and-learn approach to education is failing us.
PHIT America GO! Grants differ depending on the needs of the school applying for help.
Its a matter of what will get those kids off the couch and away from their desks for a few moments to get them active in school-based programs, Baugh said.
In the past two years, PHIT America with the support of a nonprofit calledKids in the Game has helped physical educationprograms in nearly 300 schools nationwide.
Nearly half of the high schools in America have no gym class, Baugh said, and many have cut recess.

Fitness questioned of former teacher accused of sex with students – Chicago Tribune
The attorney for a former Carpentersville Middle School teacher accused of engaging in sex acts with one-time students has raised doubts about whether the 28-year-old Geneva woman can assist in her defense, according to court records.
As a result of the attorney's "bona fide doubt," Kane County Judge D.J. Tegeler has ordered Lindsay Anderson to be evaluated by the Kane County Diagnostic Center to determine whether she is fit to stand trial. Anderson remains free on bond and is scheduled to return to court May 24.
Anderson has pleaded not guilty to a 15-count indictment charging her with criminal sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual abuse, indecent solicitation of a minor, child endangerment, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and distributing explicit material to a minor.
Authorities began their investigation into Anderson in May 2015 after the mother of one of her former math students, a then-15-year-old boy, became concerned about their relationship. The boy told police he and Anderson smoked marijuana and had sex in the back seat of an SUV, court documents state. The indictment from 2015 added charges alleging Anderson engaged in multiple sex acts over several months with a second teen she knew from school. Police said Anderson admitted to the encounters during an interview, court records show. She is also accused of sending the second boy at least one nude photo via social media.
Anderson received court supervision in 2014 after pleading guilty to a delinquency charge in a case that involved inappropriate text messages and bringing truant students to her home, court records state.
Anderson has also pleaded not guilty to an unrelated charge of filing a false police report in 2016.

The saying, your health is your wealth, ispossibly be the best way to sum up this Wisconsin-based fitness instructors career. To the unknowing eye, Delores Steil is quite the opposite of what youd expect from your typical fitness instructor.
Whys Steil so different? Shes 88 years old and has been teaching fitness classes at the same YMCA for the last 27-years. Fox12 Oregonrecently did a news story on Steil and her fitness instructing career, which is covered in the video below.
Possibly the best part of the video is Steils thoughts onwhat others think abouther.When asked if she sees herself as an inspiration like many of her peers do, she simply responds by saying, I dont feel special, but my daughters do, they think Im great.
If that doesnt prove Steil is in the fitness industry for the right reason, then I dont know what will. Here we have a woman receiving national news coverage and she shrugs off any attempt to point herself out as an inspiration to many people and stays humble. To top it off, Fox 12 Oregon state that shes only missed one class in the last 10 years. Keep in mind, she teaches classes three-times a week.
If you Google Delores Steil, chances are the only thing youll find on her is thisrecent news story. This scenario reminds me of the article we wrote in November on Mark Bells Why I Will Never Stop Lifting, video.
In this day and age its easy to get caught up in the flash and glamour of the fitness industry. With things like YouTube, Instagram, and influencer marketing, the fitness industry is becoming much more saturated with those who do fitness simply because they can.
Its increasingly harder to find those who do it for the pure love and enjoyment. Steil might be the definition of the pure love and enjoyment fitness can entail when youre improving yourself and others around you.

With a Twist: Overcoming a Fear of a Fitness First – Daily Trojan Online

Admittedly, walking into a fitness studio for the first time can be extremely intimidating. I know firsthand the fear of the unknown hour that lies ahead can easily prevent oneself from trying a new class. If you relate to this feeling or have a friend that is hesitant to join you in your fitness endeavours, this blog is dedicated to overcoming a fear of a fitness first with a twist.
Three years ago, I stepped into my first cycling class and was terrified within the first two minutes. When I opened the doors to the studio, I was shocked by the lack of natural light, the intensity of the music and the abundance of people spinning a mile a minute. To make matters worse, my bike was front row center, located next to what seemed like professional cyclists. I sat down, hesitant about what I just got myself into. However, after 45 minutes of struggling and sweating, the lights turned on, the music turned down, and I felt a newfound sense of pleasure from pushing myself to try something new. While cycling can take a few classes to get used to and I do not recommend sitting front row for your first class, this fitness first taught me a lot about myself. I was so used to doing the same workout that I felt a great sense of accomplishment after conquering my fear of cycling. I can proudly say that I now enjoy cycling, but could not have gotten to this point if I did not challenge myself. The ultimate takeaway from this experience is to not be afraid to break out of your fitness comfort zone.
Fitness is not just physical; it is also mental. This brings me to my next first: a mindful meditation class. My first mindful meditation class was a completely different experience from my cycling class. Instead of loud music, there was a soft sound of the ocean playing in the background, and the darkness was not intended to intensify the atmosphere, but rather play a soothing role.
Overall, I walked into this fitness experience with a much calmer mindset. However, once the class started, my fear of this fitness first started to kick in. The instructor told the class to use ones imagination as she guided us through a meditative course. I could not turn my mind off,and as I started to think about all of the things I needed to do after class, I worried about how distracted I was and could not complete the instructors requests. I left the class feeling frustrated by my inability to have a successful experience, but, taking my own advice from my cycling class, I pushed myself and tried again. The second mindful meditation class I took, I was able to remind myself that not all things come easily on the first try. This put my mind at ease and I was able to focus on the techniques my instructor was teaching. I can now vouch that success should be measured on a personal scale, and if you focus on yourself rather than the experiences of those around you, you will be much happier with the results of your fitness first.
It is crucial to remember that a fitness first is not intended to be easy, but rather it is a way to test your abilities. Overcoming a fear of trying something new tests your inner strength, while completing a new type of exercise challenges your physical strength. So, next time you want to try a new class but are afraid of the unknown, remember the reward is greater than the risk.

Health-conscious workers in The Gateway will soon have another gym to choose from, Fountains at Gateway developers announced Friday morning.
Anytime Fitness has leased a 4,477-square-foot retail space on the ground floor of One Fountain Plaza, the recently completed 105,500-square-foot office building at Fountains at Gateway, said Scott Graby, president of Hearthstone Properties.
Construction is underway and Anytime Fitness is set to open in May.
An excellent fitness center is essential for a Class A office and retail development, and Anytime Fitness is a perfect fit for Fountains at Gateway, Graby said.
Anytime Fitness at Fountains at Gateway is locally owned and operated by Ryan Creque, an accomplished fitness coach. She and husband Michael Creque, a longtime Murfreesboro business owner, are the franchisees.
The convenience, flexibility and prime location will appeal to busy professionals with working hours that span the clock, Ryan Creque said.
The 24-hour gym will feature an open design and private bathrooms with showers.
Staffed by trained fitness consultants, Anytime Fitness offers individual and group fitness options, a range of cardio and strength equipment and hundreds of free classes. Members also have access to more than 3,300 gyms around the world.
Our new, state-of-the-art gym at Fountains at Gateway will provide an affordable, high-quality fitness facility that is open 24/7, said Ryan Creque.
Open around the clock, every day of the year, Anytime Fitness prides itself on providing its members with fitness options in well-maintained facilities which feature top-quality exercise equipment.
The wide range of equipment, services and classes, combined with 24-hour secure access, will attract business tenants as well as local residents and medical staff from neighboring Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital, Graby said.
Anytime Fitness joins Burger Republic, Tom+Chee, Fuzzys Taco Shop, Nothing Bundt Cakes and Tressler & Associates/Tressler Title in leasing retail space at Fountains at Gateway. Board & Brush opened in January.
Developers had previously announced Brixx Wood Fired Pizza had leased space in the commercial development. The franchisee decided to not open in Murfreesboro.
Developed byHearthstone Properties, the $80 million development will include 400,000 square feet of office space in three office buildings, 70,000 square feet of retail in three free-standing buildings and street-level retail space in the office buildings, as well as a 100-unit apartment community and a mid-size business hotel.
The first retail building, with 11,200-square-feet of space, is under construction and will be completed this spring.

Flash Fitness Health Mob to hit Fred Miller Friday – Citizentribune
By Friday afternoon, temperatures in Hamblen County should reach the 70s, with no rain predicted a perfect setting for a little fitness in the park.
As part of the Healthier Tennessee Initiative, local supporters will meet at 3:30 p.m. at the Fred Miller Park pavilion for Morristowns inaugural Flash Fitness Health Mob.
The theme is designed much like the flash mobs of YouTube video fame, but fitness activities will be substituted for the typical song and dance.
Local fitness instructors Sharon Bauer, Christi Coates and Becky Hodge will lead participants in a variety of healthy activities for around 10 minutes. The activities will focus on the fun side of fitness, according to organizers.
The Flash Fitness Health Mob will kick off Healthier Tennessee Week, March 27 April 1.
As part of the Healthier Tennessee Initiative, the Healthier Hamblen Committee is holding quarterly events to promote health and wellness opportunities within the community. In February, the committee kicked off with the FX3 (fun, fit and fabulous) fitness fest.
The Healthier Tennessee Initiative is a movement to make the community healthier to help its citizens be more physically active, eat more fresh fruits and vegetables and to stop using tobacco. The goal of the movement is to ensure Hamblen County is officially named a Healthier Tennessee Community.
A healthier community such as ours doesnt happen by chance but by choice and change. This is highlighted by the many opportunities we have in our county with our park systems, growing greenways and activities, Chad McCoige, Hamblen County Health Council chairman, said.
In addition to the Healthier Hamblen Committee, the Flash Fitness Health Mob is supported by the Hamblen County Health Department, Hamblen County Health Council and Morristown Parks and Recreation.
Healthier Tennessee Week was proclaimed by Gov. Bill Haslam and Secretary of State Tre Harget, citing the states greatest resource is its citizens and their health and well-being is critical to its success.
Tennessee consistently ranks in the bottom 10 compared to other states in overall health measures and improving the health of Tennesseans will directly affect the quality of life in the state, attracting more quality jobs, lowering healthcare costs, increasing productivity and reducing absenteeism in the workplace and bettering life in communities.
According to the proclamation, the Governors Foundation for Health and Wellness is dedicated to encouraging and enabling Tennesseans to lead healthier lives through its Healthier Tennessee Communities initiative and by providing a series of free, online wellness tools to help individuals quit tobacco, get more physical activity and eat healthier.
More than 2,000 workplaces and faith congregations, 77 communities and 80,000 individuals throughout the state are engaged with the foundation and its tools, and the Centers for Disease Control shows improvement in the past two years in rates of obesity, exercise and overall health rankings.
We are building a healthier Tennessee, community by community, with each other, one step at a time, Haslam said.
