Here’s how Apple Watch killed Samsung’s first fitness tracking smartwatch – 9 to 5 Mac
The Apple Watch has notably caused smartwatch efforts by other companies to fail, and a new profile from Fast Company details the impact Apple had on Samsungs efforts in the category. The report explains that it all started back in 2011, when it was first rumored that Apple had an interest in developing a smartwatch.
Once those rumors emerged, Samsung executives reportedly began thinking of how to best compete with Apples efforts, and ideally, beat Apple to the market. From the start, Samsung decided to place a focus on health features, fearing that the Apple Watch would otherwise have an immediate advantage with advanced, clinical-grade biosensors.
In typical Samsung fashion, sources say, the executives in Korea wanted Samsung to beat Apple to the market with its own advanced health wearable. They especially wanted to get a product announced before the Apple Watch was announced, one engineer told me.
You mightremember back in May of 2014, when Samsung showed off its Simband wearable that could be fitted with a custom set of health sensors. This device was believed by many to be Samsungs Apple Watch competitor a year before the Apple Watch was announced.
Samsungs event was held a week before WWDC in 2014 as the company feared Apple could unveil Apple Watch at that developer conference. The team working on Samsungs Simband wearable was pushedright up to the day of the event, to simply create a single working prototype.
As we now know, the Apple Watch wasnt announced until September of 2014 and released the following April. Samsung, however, says that the Simband wasnt meant as a response to the Apple Watch rumors and expectations, but rather a way to play offense rather than defense:
The one current Samsung executive I spoke to for this story, Francis Ho, vice president at the Samsung Innovation and Strategy Center (SSIC), denies that Simband was a defensive act against Apple, at least from his vantage point in Silicon Valley. No one really knew what they were going to do, to begin with, Ho told me. So we were much more interested in playing offense than defense.
Following Samsungs event in May of 2014, the company continued work behind the scenes on Simband and showed off a much more advanced and stable version of the wearable at a November developer event. For the most part, that was the last time Samsung addressed Simband publicly and even that event was overshadowed by the Apple Watch, which had been announced two months prior.
For the Simband/SAMI initiative at SSIC, the announcement of the Apple Watch was when the air went out of the tires, as one engineer put it. The project lost much of its reason for existing.
Since then, the Simband team has seemingly stepped out of the limelight. Key engineers and researchers left the project and no one really asksany questions about its future. Some at Samsung, however, still have big plans for the initiative, including Francis Ho, VP at Samsungs Innovation and Strategy Center:
Ho still has big plans for the application of Simband in clinical settings, too. He doesnt have to hesitate to think when he describes what success might look like: Its rolled out; maybe its approved by some reimbursement plan, maybe its sponsored by your employer, and we have it [available] to millions of people, Ho told me. Thats our dream.
Essentially what happened here is that Samsung overestimated the potential of Apple Watch and misjudged when the device would be unveiled and what sort of health tracking features it would offer. The company had planned to preemptively strike a blow to Apples efforts, but because of the shaky first demo and lack of clear focus, the Apple Watch overshadowed.
This isnt the only device the Apple Watch has put to rest, either. Microsoft was also believed to be working on an iOS-compatible fitness band in 2014, but because of the Apple Watchs unveil, it was also overshadowed. The device did ultimately hit the market, but if youre like me, you probably couldnt name one time youve seen somebody actually using one.

Mom’s Side-by-Side Fitness Photos Show Why Social Media Perfection Isn’t Real – Huffington Post
Many moms struggle with the changes to their bodies after pregnancy. Whether youre trying to get fit or just trying to get through the day, Mia Redworth is spreading her message of self-love and body confidence to all the new moms out there.
Redworth is an Instagrammer and mother to a 13-month-old son who is sharing her fitness journey through the photos and inspirational captions she shares. And shes all about keeping it real.
REALITY CHECK! reads a recent Instagram post that showcases two side-by-side photos of Redworth wearing yoga pants in what she calls bloated vs posing positions.
No one is perfect, she writes. I have stretch marks from carrying a baba for 42 weeks, a little tummy pouch from an emergency c section, I have eczema from stress on my stomach and spend most of my time looking like the picture of the left! No awful teas that promise the world can fix this, humans just get bloated! Its totally normal and fine to look like this.
Redworth came to her hard-won perspective after being shocked by what her body actually looked like post-pregnancy. Because society so often shows only Photoshopped models and celebrities who bounce back from pregnancy within days, she had never seen what a real postpartum body looks like, or even heard anyone talk about it. She initially hit a low point in her self-confidence.
But about 12 weeks postpartum, she started weight training with the goals of building muscle and returning her rear end to its curvy, pre-pregnancy glory. She decided to document her fitness journey for all the other moms out there, but with a focus on self-love.
I always wished I had someone to look up to on Instagram and as much as I love the fitmums on there, their lives are so unrealistic for most! Redworth told The Huffington Post. Not everyone can live in the gym and not everyone will have abs after pregnancy. I thought about how many other women are out there looking for the same thing. After this, I decided to document my fitness journey, all the ups and downs being as real as I would need someone to be.
A centerpiece of her body positive style is that she doesnt worry about clothing sizes or goal weights. In fact, she hasnt weighed herself at all since the day she found herself feeling embarrassed by her postpartum weight at a meeting with a trainer.
When I got home that night, I asked myself why I was embarrassed at all. Us mothers have it rough enough feeling like a huge uncomfortable whale for almost a year then to wake up with a baby, a totally new body and all this self hatred isnt fair! Especially when you add the stress of a newborn. I got so overwhelmed I eventually sat there and said, Ive had enough! I had a baby, and no matter what anyone says sometimes your body needs to gain weight. Who cares?
Redworth also points out that muscle weighs more than fat, which means your weight on the scale can be deceiving when youre getting into shape.
Recently, Redworth decided to make a point about clothing sizes by posting two photos of herself trying on a pre-pregnancy skirt. In the first photo, from a few months ago, the skirt doesnt even come close to fitting. In the second photo, she is able to button all but one button, but the skirt has gotten much shorter due to her now more muscular butt and thighs.
She urges her followers not to focus so much on clothing sizes and numbers.
Dont get so obsessed with numbers they mean nothing, you could fit into any size clothing and find issues with your body. Focus more on loving yourself for you, getting rid of the negativity and challenge yourself on why a clothing size is so important to you. Fitness becomes much more enjoyable if you arent constantly putting yourself down.
Redworth points out that clothing size says nothing about your health, adding that she was very unhealthy from starving herself when she was a size 4, but has gone up a few sizes in jeans since building up her leg and butt muscles.
She also regularly pulls back the curtain on the different poses, angles and tricks that people use on social media to make their bodies appear a certain way.
On a collage of three photographs of herself from behind, she writes, Instagram is full of posing pictures especially fitness accounts so I thought I would post a different kind of #transformation picture. Me posing 10 months ago vs now and to show you guys what my bum actually looks like when I stand normally without tensing or doing the infamous butt pose.
Redworth says we need to stop comparing ourselves to pictures and people online, and pierces the bubble of social media perfection by pointing out her own stretch marks, cellulite and scars.
She says her son is her motivation to stay positive, because she never wants him to see her appearing unhappy with her body or to have to tell him he cant go swimming because she feels insecure in a bathing suit.
You just have to sit and think, Would I let a stranger say the things I say to myself in my head? and Would I want my child to ever think these things about their own body? and the answer will always be no! she says.
And whether you have fitness goals you are trying to reach or are just learning to accept your body as it is, her advice to new moms is the same.
You have all the time in the world to change anything you arent happy with, but you only get one chance at making amazing memories with your baby, so never take that for granted. Love yourself despite any flaws and enjoy your life as much as you can. Youre beautiful.

Interview With YouTube Fitness Star Cassey Ho – TeenVogue.com
Cassey Ho, the brains behind Blogilates, has the kind of career every self-proclaimed fitness fiend dreams of. She started her YouTube channel in 2009 with the simple goal of helping people realize how easy and attainable it can be to stay or get fit and live a healthy lifestyle. But what began as a fun way to educate and inspire her subscribers, ultimately turned into so, so much more. Fast forward almost 8 years and 30-year-old Cassey is now running the show at her very own full-fledged fitness brand. As the founder of POP Pilates and PIIT28 and the designer of POPFLEX Active not to mention still running her personal channel it's no wonder she's been called one of the top health and fitness influencers in the world.
Despite her powerhouse reputation and perennially busy schedule, though, Casey somehow still manages to remain regularly connected with her fans via her various social platforms. And with over a million followers on Instagram and Facebook, it's quite obvious she's not only a fitness guru, but a social media maven, too. Though we happen to think her 'gram is where you can get to know Cassey the most. Her uplifting feed is flooded with everything from inspirational quotes to quickie workout tutorials and even the occasional shameless selfie. What's arguably so appealing about Cassey's overall brand is her ability to stay true to herself and to find ways that make fitness fun for everyone not just the twice-a-day gym-goer but those of us who might put working out pretty low on our priority list.
What's more? Cassey never, ever makes you feel like you should work out simply to "look better" or drop the lbs. As an eating disorder survivor, Cassey maintains a fitness-should-feel-good attitude and says the goal should be about boosting your mood and overall confidence rather than about what you see on the scale a message we obv stand behind 100%.
...Which is why we were beyond-pumped to have the opportunity to catch up with Cassey to chat about what else? but all things fitness and healthy living. From how she handles negative comments and body-shamers to her go-to post-workout snack, read on for the deep dive on our fitness guru favorite.
Teen Vogue: How do you handle cyberbullies and body-shamers?
Cassey Ho: I don't allow them to get to me. I focus on the positivity that I am sharing with the world and the amazing community that surrounds it. If the bullies can't contribute to that, they have no place in my heart or mind.
TV: Whats one reason you would give someone to work out that has nothing to do with what you look like?
Cassey Ho: Working out should make you FEEL happy, energized and motivated to take on the rest of your day. Feeling good will translate into looking good, too.
TV: How do you start your morning?
Cassey Ho: I set up my morning for success! I wake up early, make my bed, brush my teeth andpop in my Alcon DAILIES TOTAL1 contact lenses. I thendo a PIIT28 workoutand make a healthy breakfast before I head off to work at the Blogilates HQ. The momentum of my morning pushes my motivation for my day at work!
TV: Do you have a favorite snack to eat after a workout and why?
Cassey Ho: It's super important to fuel up with a balance of healthy carbs, protein and fats to refuel your body from all the hard work you just accomplished. An easy way to do this is with a smoothie! I love doing a Peanut Butter and Banana almond milk smoothie with spinach!
TV: What's one thing everyone should do for their wellness routine this spring?
Cassey Ho: De-clutter and focus on making positive changes that improve your overall wellness! I love organizing and refreshing my house because I find that eliminating unnecessary physical things frees up space in my mind as well.An example of a seemingly small but impactful change Ive made to improve my overall wellness is switching to Alcon DAILIES TOTAL1 contact lenses. Vision is an often overlooked part of fitness and staying in shape. Like the right apparel, footwear and diet, it is important to have the right contact lenses because they arecrucial to your performance.
TV: Any must-have equipment for turning your dorm /dorm room into a gym?
Cassey Ho: Get a yoga mat! Since you have limited space, all you need is a mat to get a killer workout in. I just released some beautiful new styles in thepopflexactive.comshop. So much color! Color makes me happy 🙂
TV: How do you stay motivated when youre feeling lousy?
Cassey Ho: Let yourself take a moment to recharge and recollect your thoughts. Being negative and feeling down won't get you anywhere. Getting outside or talking with a friend is the best way to boost your mood and get yourself motivated!

Planet Fitness coming to Butte and locations throughout Montana – Montana Standard
Months after opening a Planet Fitness in Helena, Dave Leon of Albany, New York, says hes bringing the New Hampshire-based franchise to Butte in addition to four other new locations throughout the state.
Leon, who has been a franchise owner with Planet Fitness since 2004, told The Montana Standard by phone Wednesday hes in the process of bidding on two properties in the Mining City, one of which is the old Hastings books and music store, 2307 Harrison Ave. He declined to name the other potential location but said both properties were between 20,000 and 23,000 square feet.
Should everything go according to plan, Leon said, the Butte Planet Fitness should open January 2018 and be similar to the Helena location, which boasts more than 100 cardio machines among other fitness equipment.
The gym will employ 20 to 25 people with four full-time employees and one manager and will be open 24 hours a day Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Leon said.
Basic memberships will be $10 per month while Black Card memberships will be $21.99 per month and include access to tanning, massage, and hydrotherapy among other amenities. All members will have free access to certified instructors.
Leon also has locations planned for Great Falls, Billings, Bozeman, and Missoula; the latter is slated to open in 30 days.
He said he was hesitant at first to open in smaller markets like Helena and Butte, but so far the Helena Planet Fitness has been generating interest and given him confidence that a Butte location can be successful.
A 30-year veteran of the fitness industry, Leon plans on relocating to the Big Sky State. He said hes always loved the pristine landscapes and wide open spaces of Montana and is an avid outdoorsman.
Leon has a development agreement with Planet Fitness for a territory that includes Wyoming and Montana, and he also has current and planned locations in Colorado and North Dakota.
It may seem like a risk to dive headfirst into franchise ownership, but this isnt Leons first time at the rodeo when it comes to owning Planet Fitness locations.
(The intermountain west) is a market Ive been working on for three years, said Leon, who owned 20 franchises in New York, which he has since sold in order to embark on his new enterprise.
Leon said when he started working with Planet Fitness in 2004, the company had just nine locations and was an industry outlier. It offered a judgment free atmosphere that was open to people of all shapes and sizes. Instead of juice bars and body builders, Leon said, Planet Fitness was filled with mere mortals mothers, grandmothers, and everyone in between.
It was an unusual model, Leon said, noting that the company managed to tap into a niche market and now has over 1,300 locations.
We go after first-time fitness users, Leon said. Weve created a very comfortable, non-intimidating environment.
The world judges you. We dont at Planet Fitness, he continued, staying on brand with the company credo.
He added that Planet Fitness extends its company culture to its charitable efforts.
Last year the company gave $1.5 million to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and has collaborated with the organization on an anti-bullying campaign called the Judgment Free Generation. Leon said he makes contributions to local chapters in areas where he owns gyms.

Proposed LA Fitness in Livonia draws concern over parking – Detroit Free Press

It looks like a little more work may have to go into it before approval will be granted for the proposed LA Fitness going in at the former Farmer Jack on Seven Mile.
The Livonia City Council reviewed the waiver petition for the proposed development at the site, located at 29659 Seven Mile,Monday night during its study meeting. After the presentation, several council members said they were concerned with some elements of the proposed work, including the larger-than-needed amount of parking spaces and some of the building's design, including the larger-than-required amount of parking spots currently planned for the entire center.
The proposal currently calls for 523 parking spots for the project, which consists of the proposed LA Fitness, a small shopping center with retail stores and another commercial pad that will house another business at a later date.
"Did I hear correctly that you think you need all 523 spaces?" asked Councilman Scott Bahr. "I'm blown away by the amount of parking on this, and that's something I'm very sensitive to. I'd rather seegreen and shade than more concrete."
The proposal for the redevelopment was recommended for approval by the city's planning commissionlast summer. The proposal calls for the removal of the former Farmer Jack, which has been empty for nearly 10 years, and replace it with a new LA Fitness and two other commercial buildings.
Developers said the amount of parking was done to make sure the facilities would be able to accommodate as many customers as the business could have at one time.

"I think what LA Fitness is trying to portray certainly is with their experience, one spot short turns a customer away," said Karl Zarbo, director of operations for Lormax Stern. "I think they certainly design for the load."
Councilman Brian Meakin said he'd like to see some of the proposed parking space land banked, especially if one of the out-lots is not expected to be developed in the near future.
"I'm sure the neighbors to the east would appreciate something like that, too," he said.
If approved, it would become the second LA Fitness in Livonia: another gym currently operates in Wonderland Village near Plymouth and Middlebelt roads.
Councilwoman Maureen Miller Brosnan said she noticed the design of the proposed building is different than the one in Wonderland Village.
"It looks remarkably more substantial in its building materials then what you're proposing for Seven Mile and Middlebelt," she said. "Is there any way we could get closer to what that looks like? That's a good-looking building."
Officials said they planned on using many of the same designs for the smaller building on the property to mirror the ones in the Livonia Marketplace shopping center across the street. Lormax Stern also owns that shopping center as well.
Zarbosaid there are a few companies who have a lease in escrow at the proposed new center, though he declined to talk about which companies those were in detail. He said the additional pad would be filled most likely at a later date, a strategy that allows the company to be more selective about the type of businesses that go into that center.
"It allows us to be way more selective then just taking something early to pay the bills," Zarbosaid.
The council has two motions on the floor for its next regular meeting: one to approve the development and another to send the issue to the council's committee of the whole for further discussion. The council's next regular meeting takes place at 7 p.m. March 27 at Livonia City Hall.

November Project co-leaders help build community through free fitness – Madison.com
As they do every week, no matter the season, roughly 80 people gathered at the state Capitol building before the sun rose on a Friday in February to work out in 20-degree temperatures.
The size of the group, a branch of the November Project, has steadily grown since beginning with just a few adventurous bodies on a cold morning in February 2013 and includes all fitness levels and ages.
And no one is paying a cent to join the group and stay fit.
I think thats the heart of it, November Project-Madison co-leader Nicole Martin said. Theres no memberships. Theres no sign-ups. People can just show up. Sometimes new things are scary and intimidating. Theres no boundaries here. You shouldnt have to pay $100 a month to have a gym membership to have a community and be able to work out and be fit.
November Project began in Boston in 2011 when two people wanted to hold each other accountable and hold workouts outdoors every day in November. They carried on past that month, and the Madison tribe was born just more than a year later.
According to Martin, the project has now expanded to 33 locations, including London, Amsterdam, Hong Kong, Serbia, Iceland and a number of cities across the U.S. and Canada.
Martin and co-leader Moriah Consigny began showing up to workouts in 2013. Theyve led the Madison group since last year and have helped build a safe, free option for those in the community who want to stay fit.
Rain, shine, cold, snow or sleet these early-risers spend every Friday morning at the Capitol at 6:27 a.m., every Wednesday morning at Bascom Hill at 6:28 a.m. and also partake in the occasional brunch run on Saturdays. Only one workout has been canceled since the group began in 2013.
When your eyelashes freeze over, Consigny said. I like those workouts.
What is this group all about?
Martin: Our whole mission is to build community around this idea of free fitness and really create a place for people to land. When I moved here, I came here for grad school, didnt know anybody, and this group of people has given me a home and a family here in Madison and made a new place feel like a place that Im supposed to be, and I think we try every week to make that for other people. Getting new people to come to our workouts is our very, very favorite thing. We like to kind of push boundaries and break out of the normal routines that people are in where a free fitness group, theres no catch ever. Its always going to be free. Its a big aspect of trying to get people out here with no excuses. You dont have to pay for a gym. You dont have to work out inside.
What would you say to the fitness novice whos nervous to try this?
Consigny: I think our workouts are hard no matter what your level is. Thats the beauty to it. You always feel like you got a good workout in. and everybody gets through it. Thats the amazing part. Everybody gets through this workout because we have each other holding each other accountable, pushing each other and making it really enjoyable. We push people outside their comfort zone in a safe environment.
It looks like you guys run a lot, but what other type of workouts do you do?
Martin: We do all sorts of things. A lot of times, well do different patterns around the Capitol, so we might run up and down the stairs (next to the Capitol) or run the inner loop of the Capitol. Well run down all the hills that spray out from the Capitol. Well do lunges, bear crawl up the stairs, hop the steps. We do a lot of funny, quirky partner exercises. Maybe youll do a wall sit and your partner will do some tricep dips on your knees. Some weird things. We like to break the mold a little bit.
What do you think gets people out of bed this early when its cold?
Martin: I think its the people. The people that you meet here are amazing people, and you build friendships. You build relationships with people that you would never meet in your normal, everyday life. As a grad student or as a college student or whatever you do, you have your circle of people that you interact with in your day to day, and November Project is a place where people from all different walks of life and all different stages of life are all coming together. I really think its walking up these steps and seeing a friendly face and getting to hug your friends in the morning that gets people out here, even when its bad weather.
Consigny: I think its the knowledge that were all going to be here and theyre not. Were all going to be here doing the workout, getting high fives, laughing, cheering each other on and theyre going to be in bed. Its warm there, but this is where the fun is.

Chris Hemsworth’s Instagram Fitness Video Will Put You to Shame – Men’s Journal
Need a little mid-week workout motivation? Well, look no further than the Instagram feed of one Chris Hemsworth and get ready to see an incredible display of Thor-sized beast mode.
The Australian actor is gearing up for the next installment of the Thor movie franchise with Thor: Ragnarok, filming later this year. And as you can see, Hemsworth is already in superhero shape.
The video documents his workout with Luke Zocchi, who according to Hemsworth is the world's best trainer" and your best bet for becoming a "flat-out legend with your personal fitness. Hemsworth proceeds to throw around weights like a bull, swing battle ropes like hes casually playing double-dutch on a playground, and throw medicine balls while attached to resistance bands like its a game. At one point of the video Hemsworth even growls.
It just goes to show the work that superstars put in to look like superheroes, but that doesnt mean you cant use Hemsworths personal training session as inspiration to go a little harder during your daily workout.
But if Hemsworth isnt inspiration enough to get you off your ass and into the gym, another super-fit celebrity just might be: Dwayne Johnson uploaded this Ultimate Workout video to his YouTube channel last week with a simple message that stated: Beat mode activated. Enjoy. The first 45 seconds of the video doesnt even include any exercises that demand ox-like strength so you have no excuse not to follow along with Johnsons planks, resistance band cable rows, and Roman chair ab circuit. But after the Rock chalks up and starts throwing around the 1,000-pound club weights, thats where our human limitations start to kick in.
