Boxing fitness center to open in Green Hills – Nashville Post (subscription)

Fitness service business Pepper Boxing is slated to open in early May in Green Hills.

According to a release, the boxing concept offers a high-intensity, full-body workout in a classic old-school boxing environment.

Pepper Boxing will operate from a space located in a retail strip center with an address of 2176 Bandywood Drive. (See the building here courtesy of Google Maps.)

The studio will serve both beginning and experienced boxers with a circular ring-like bag layout and an instructor positioned at the center of the ring, creating a clear line-of-sight for clients (Pepper Boxing bills this orientation as distinctive to similar boxing businesses in Nashville). The Pepper instructors offer various group fitness backgrounds, including those in professional boxing, Muay Thai and yoga.

Alexander Kaufman, Pepper Boxing founder, said classes will deliver a full-body workout with clients burning between 750 to 1,000 calories per 50-minute session.

Of note, the studio will feature water-filled teardrop punching bags that, he said, allow for effective blow absorption and less stress on bones and joints.

Boxing is a very graceful sport and a big stress reliever, which is why its no surprise that its been named the top workout of 2017 by many fitness experts, said Kaufman, a New York City native who has trained worldwide and previously owned training companies in Berlin, Paris, London and New York.

Were focused on building a sense of community and camaraderie at Pepper Boxing so that clients can see the beauty in getting ugly during their workout, he added.

MTLC Building Group of Franklin is serving as general contractor, with Nashville-based MHP Architects handling design.

Kaufman, a former professional power lifter with more than 20 fitness certifications, is not disclosing the cost to get the business operational or terms of the lease.

Pepper Boxing will offer special programs for young boxers, ages 12 and under, through its Pepperonis program as well as discounts for college students, Kaufman said.

The studio is currently pre-selling class packages at a 20 percent discount, and all classes will be free throughout opening weekend in May with advance online booking, he said. The per-class price is $26 and private training is available for $100 per session.

Lynn students punching away at fitness – Daily Item

March 13, 2017

PHOTO BY SCOTT EISEN Aidi Domenech of Lynn Classical High School boxes at Title Boxing in Saugus.

By GAYLA CAWLEY

SAUGUS About 40 Lynn Classical High School students took a brief reprieve from classes on Monday to roll with the punches at Title Boxing Club.

The physical education/health students ranged from ninth- to 12th-graders, and from all different fitness levels. When they arrived at the gym in Saugus for their one-hour boxing class, the teenagers had their hands wrapped to prep for the punching bag.

Colleen Peterson, a PE/Health teacher at Classical, said she thought the class would be a hit because theres interest in boxing at the school, and its becoming a trend.

We do a lot of fitness-based curriculum in our PE classes, so I feel like this is going to really complement it, Peterson said. Its really for lifetime fitness, them seeing this as teenagers, because not everyone thats in PE right now is an athlete, so I feel like its really going to give them exposure to life after high school sports and keeping in shape.

Peterson said she and the other PE teachers decided to put the idea out there and see if 50 kids would sign up. Forty signed up by the deadline last Friday. Title was doing the class for free, and students only had to pay for their hand wraps. The $10 sign-up fee included transportation by bus. Peterson said it was the first time she and the other PE teachers have done a field trip similar to the boxing class, and she was hoping to do it every semester if it went well.

It gives them a great cross-training experience, said Joan Wiendczak, a PE teacher. We dont want them to do the same exercise everyday because your body gets used to that. Enabling them to do something like this will cross-train them and use new muscles that perhaps they werent using before, and get them out and doing something that would interest them that they otherwise wouldnt be exposed to.

Goudreau keeps rockin in Swampscott

Wiendczak said the boxing class takes on all fitness levels. She said the whole idea was to get the students to move around and strengthen, so their fitness level continues to go up.

I just thought it was interesting, said Eric Lluveres, 18, a senior, about why he wanted to take the class. I used to box before and I thought it was a good opportunity to get back into it.

Eric Lopez, 18, a senior, said he came for the experience. He said he has boxed a little bit before, but nothing too serious.

When asked if it provided a nice break from the school day, he said, Its not every day you get to come to the gym like this and box.

Senior Gilley Kabamba, 18, also thought the class would be interesting and was hoping to learn.

Junior Julie Mejia, 18, signed up because she thought the class looked exciting and to get a good workout.

Shakia Warner, 17, a junior, said she usually boxes at home.

I box all the time with my dad, so I guess I just like boxing, Warner said.

Lucky Henry, a fitness instructor at Title Boxing Club, said before the class that the students would be taken through a warm-up and then would be shown how to punch. They would engage in shadow punching and would go through a full-body workout.

After eight rounds of punching and combinations, he said they would do 15 minutes of ab and core work. He said everything in boxing is generated through the core. Kicking, punching, all of it comes from balance, Henry added.

Henry said anyone can take the class.

Its not a competition with anybody, he said. Its all based on yourself. What can you do with the amount of time youre given?

Google says crowdsourced data makes for better fitness apps – Engadget

Head of Health and Fitness Apps for Google Play, Mary Liz McCurdy, said in an interview at SXSW that applications in the category aren't just loggers anymore. Instead, she says, they've become much more beneficial to users by turning their data into deeper experiences, which can translate to things like personalized recommendations on how to eat healthier, sleep better and have effective workouts. That's what you see with apps like Runtastic and Nike+ Training Club.

"Now everyone can work out with a personalized coach, whether it be a real coach or in most cases a robo coach," says McCurdy. "People are willing to pay and they're willing to spend a lot of time working out, so these [apps] are all just different pocket-sized personal trainers that continue to improve and get more adaptive and smart with time." Still, despite how valuable these types of apps have become to people, she says they're not meant to replace a human trainer or a doctor. "This is augmenting your experience if you actually have a condition. That doesn't mean that you do not need to go to the doctor, it just means you're an informed citizen. You're in control of your health."

McCurdy believes it's helpful for users to connect with like-minded people through social aspects, which she says wouldn't be possible without crowdsourced data. "The apps give you the knowledge that you need to make informed decisions," she says, "and live your best, healthy life."

Burnout can occur when we do more than we are ready to handle.(Photo: shironosov, Getty Images/iStockphoto)

Do you ever feel like youre full of energy and enthusiasm during your day, but when its time to head to the gym you feel exhausted and drained? This is in part because we give so much of our energy to our work. Its great to love what you do, but its also easy to become rundown in the process if youre not taking proper care of yourself.

One of the most common causes of burnout is excessive overload or simply doing too much. We become overeager and do more than we are ready to handle. The second most common cause of problems is inadequate rest. Not getting enough proper rest can drain our energy stores and leave our bodies feeling wasted.

Implementing a few simple self-care protocols will help you stay on top of your game, so youre in the best shape for work, workouts and whatever life offers you that day.
