Adidas is working on new, ‘open’ digital fitness products – Engadget – Engadget

"It's not just about 'Can we develop a new piece of hardware that is a standalone Adidas ecosystem,'" Burr told Engadget in an interview at SXSW 2017. "You'll be seeing that we'll be opening up a bunch of our content and know-how to other third party devices, and [making] it more of an open platform scenario so that we can extend onto other people's devices as well." She says the goal will be to make fitness experiences that are tailored for each individual, since not everybody takes the same approach to training or working out.

"It's not about creating these monolithic experiences that we want everyone to be in, in the same way," Burr said. As for when we can expect these new products, whether this may be an app or a wearable, there's no timeframe right now, but Burr says they're coming "down the road."

HEALTH AND FITNESS: Your metabolism explained – Aiken Standard

Many people are interested in speeding up their metabolism in an effort to lose weight. There are drugs, supplements and even certain foods that are thought to increase metabolism. The effectiveness of many of these things is unproven, and some may actually be dangerous. The goal of this article is to explain what the term metabolism really means and how it can be changed.

Metabolism refers all of your bodys processes that expend energy or burn calories. Practically, this is how much carbohydrate, fat and protein is burned throughout the day to provide energy for your cells. This matters because expending more energy than you consume in your diet can lead to weight loss over time.

The amount of energy you expend in a day is composed of three main components: your resting metabolic rate, or RMR, something called the thermic effect of food, or TEF, and the energy you expend in activity.

Resting metabolic rate is sometimes called the basal metabolic rate, or BMR, but many people refer to it as their metabolism. No matter which name is used, it refers to the calories you burn at rest. It represents the energy needed to maintain your essential body functions: heart rate, breathing, body temperature and normal cellular processes.

The resting metabolic rateis important because it represents about 60 to 70 percent of the total calories a typical person burns in a typical day. Even though resting metabolic rateis important, you shouldnt worry about it too much.

First, it is difficult to change. Resting metabolic rateis based mostly on your lean body mass, so the only way to increase it is to gain muscle mass. While this is a good goal, it is challenging to do, especially while you trying to lose weight.

Second, although it does vary among people, it isnt as different as people like to think. It is easy to think that someone who gains weight has a slow metabolism or that someone who is thin must have a fast metabolism. In reality, the RMR probably isnt much different, certainly when you take lean body mass (muscle) into account. The explanation for the differences in weight among people probably has more to do with what they eat and how active they are.

The thermic effect of food (TEF) represents the energy needed to digest, absorb, and store the nutrients you eat. It accounts for only about 10 percent of your total energy expenditure and it is practically impossible to change, so you can ignore it.

Activity is the most variable component of energy expenditure and the one you can most readily change. Obviously, it will vary based on how active you are, but for most people it accounts for 20 to 30 percent of total energy expenditure.

Activity includes both purposeful movement such as exercise and doing work or tasks that require you to move. Activity also includes non-exercise activity thermogenesis, or NEAT, the calories you burn when you move around, but not in a purposeful way. Maintaining your posture when sitting or standing, fidgeting in your chair or other light movements count as NEAT.

The surest way for you to increase your metabolism is to limit the time you spend sitting, be active as possible at all times and dedicate time to exercise every day. Doing prolonged aerobic exercise such as walking, jogging or exercise classes directly burns calories and including strength training will help increase your muscle mass, which can increase up your resting metabolic rate.

The bottom line is that speeding up your metabolism requires you to move. So, get up off the couch and go for a walk!

Adidas aims to open fitness app efforts to third-party partnerships – Retail Dive

Dive Brief:

Adidas is looking to partner with third party firms to create more personalized experiences for its fitness technology solutions as it shifts those efforts to focus on building an ecosystem for the Runtastic app it acquired in 2015, according to an Engadget report out of South by Southwest 2017.

The sportswear brand last month said it would be consolidating its digital efforts under the Runtastic banner, which already had 100 million users when it was acquired by Adidas, and shutting down its miCoach platform of health and fitness products.

Adidas told Engadget that because not everyone takes the same approach to working out, it is trying to tailor fitness experiences to individuals. It will look to do that in part by opening its own content and technology to third party devices.

So, Adidas is deciding to focus its personal fitness development energies around an app that long ago passed 100 million users (and which Adidas spent almost $240 million to acquire). This seems like a no-brainer and also maybe something that should have happened sooner.

These efforts come not long after Adidas competitor Nike revamped its Nike+ mobile app, a move that was intended to create a more seamless experience across a variety of Nike applications. By folding one app platform (miCoach) into another (Runtastic), Adidas may be looking to make things less confusing for itself and users by supporting fewer platforms.

Fitness apps are very much tied to the wearables market, and the wearables market has not developed the way some major device companies have figured it would, a notion most recently displayed in Best Buy's fourth quarter 2016 earnings report, which showed wearable to be among the product categories that experienced sales declines during the holiday period. It's not clear yet which other third party firms Adidas will be working with, how those partnerships will take shape or who will bringing what to the table. Opening itself to more partnerships could in some cases mean that Adidas' ability to move quickly with new offerings will be somewhat dependent on those partners.

Still, Adidas has its head in the right place with this effort. It is trying not to impose its own iron-clad device and app vision on fitness app users, recognizing that people want to use fitness apps in different ways and focus on using different features and functions, depending on how intensely they work out and what they train for. Creating an ecosystem that can bring as many new features and combinations of feature to the table as possible could be what helps Adidas stand out in the fitness app world.

Would new town recreation center compete with businesses? – Palm Beach Daily News

A new recreation center in Palm Beach likely wont have an impact on local pilates and yoga studios, but it could affect the islands only fitness center open to the general public.

As part of its proposal to build a new recreation center, the town includes a 1,800-square-foot fitness center with 15 to 18 machines. Revenue from the sale of passes to the fitness center is supposed to help keep the center economically viable.

Craig Campbell owns Palm Beach Fitness, a 2,000-square-foot gym at 165 Chilean Ave. near Town Hall. Excluding boutique barre, yoga and pilates studios, its the only gym on the island not part of a private club or hotel. Campbell said hes kind of indifferent to the idea of a new gym in town, but doesnt think municipalities should try operate fitness centers like businesses.

I think its better handled by private people than governments getting involved, he said. I think if the market needed another fitness center on the island then wed have one.

Many residents agree with Campbell. Theyve argued at several meetings that adding a new fitness center will hurt other island fitness businesses.

What affect will a subsidized facility have on existing providers in town who themselves either own the parcels, pay taxes, pay rent in addition to all of the costs associated with running a business? resident Anita Seltzer asked at a Recreation Advisory Commission meeting this month.

Others have raised similar concerns over the past several months.

If we add a fitness center and all of these classes, we could hurt current Palm Beach businesses Councilwoman Julie Araskog has said. We must study this very carefully or we may run the risk of causing a loss of their profits and perhaps even cause some to close.

If you have a cheaper gym, people will abandon the gyms that they are members of and they will come to a gym that is less expensive, recreation board member Khooshe Aiken has said. It will put gyms out of business if people give up one membership and get another.

Recreation Director Beth Zickar has said its not the towns intention to put anyone out of business.

Our intention is to enhance services that are being provided on the island, she has said. We want to supplement services that are already being provided.

Ken Ballard of Ballard, King & Associates, the firm that prepared the business plan for the new center, has said adding a fitness element wont negatively impact the existing market.

We find across the United States that public facilities and private facilities have a very different market focus, he recently told the recreation board. In fact, in many cases weve found that the public side of things kind of ultimately feeds the private sector side by getting people introduced to the market. In many cases, people will pick and choose where they go and maybe join certain facilities for certain programs and the recreation center for others.

Ballard also said the recreation centers gym wouldnt be big enough to dominate the market.

Its a pretty small space in there, he said. It simply is not large enough to service a massive population in terms of exercise classes or just use of the fitness pieces. I dont see virtually any market impact.

Island biz reaction

Campbell said hes not worried about losing existing customers, but might be worried about gaining new customers if the town undercuts his prices.

I started this business on my own 13 years ago, he said. For them to come in and have a wad of money handed to them, yeah that sucks. But thats the way it is. Whatevers going to happen is going to happen.

Lauren Donovan owns Studios Etc. on North County Road, which includes Momentum Cycle, Labarre and Pilates. She said the new recreation center could be positive.

I think that things that are new and provide activity for the community are always positive, she said. We see our studios as being highly specialized, small boutiques. We dont get too worried or concerned about our clients going elsewhere.

Alyson Limehouse, owner of Sunset Pilates on Sunset Avenue, also isnt threatened by a new recreation center.

I like the rec center, she said. It serves a purpose. Its for the good of the community. Everybody should be able to go where they want to go. We live in America. Its a free world.

Fitness for those with disabilities – WPEC

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (CBS12)

Kids with disabilities like autism and down syndrome and adults with Parkinson's are the focus of unique fitness classes that are changing lives at Beyond Fitness, a specialty gym in Delray Beach.

Colleen Sturgess, Beyond Fitness owner, spoke exclusively with CBS12 News This Morning.

Trainers use dancing, boxing, weights, bands and core work while incorporating balance and movement exercises to help kids and adults with limitations become agile, focused and strong in various ways.

Sturgess explained there is an emphasis on mindfulness training to help them quiet the "chatter" in their heads in order to lower stress.

Overall mind and body health is especially crucial for these particular adults and kids, Sturgess said.

There are a variety of classes offered. One class is called Dancers with Disabilities and is designed for [people with disabilities] that keeps them from feeling comfortable in a traditional dance studio," Sturgess said. "The focus of the class is not perfecting steps, its about the combination of movement, music, and an enjoyable time among peers with no judgement.

Dancers with Disabilities and Dancing with the Stars for Parkinson are a couple of the unique programs offered.

GRAND OPENING: MKT Fitness – Columbia Daily Tribune

When John Stull was released from prison six years ago, he could have moved away to start anew, leaving Columbia where he was an all-state defensive end at Rock Bridge High School and an heir-apparent to the growing roster of NFL prospects on the University of Missouri defensive line.

Instead, Stull, 29, came home. He severed ties with the connections and habits that led him down a path of drugs and crime, determined that those days were behind him. On Monday, his MKT Fitness gym officially opens inside the Missouri Athletic Center at 2900 Forum Blvd. Hes the owner and head coach.

I recognized that I had hurt a lot of people in the community by the decisions I was making, Stull said. He credited coaches and others in Columbia who helped him escape poverty and become a solid student and an elite football player.

I kind of squandered all of that, he said. Stull wanted to stay in Columbia and make amends for what I had done, to leave more of a lasting legacy of positivity that can help people for a long time.

He also credits media coverage of his post-crime life for reframing his story from one that was once headlined with news of assault, drunk driving, selling drugs and burglary.

Now when someone Googles my name, all the trash isnt the first thing they see, he said. Its rare to come out of the situation I did, but its possible, for sure.

Stull knows there are others in the community who need to know you can get past that and not be judged by what you did, but judged by who you are. The transformation that he wants to help facilitate comes through CrossFit-style training that builds strength, endurance and overall fitness.

Stull said his gym will use cutting-edge fitness science and methods to help others reach their fitness goals more quickly in an inviting, supportive way.

He is a certified CrossFit trainer, with additional certification in nutrition and strength and conditioning. He also judges competitive CrossFit events.

MKT Fitness will offer a variety of fitness programs, along with bootcamps and gymnastics.

Stull also is ready to share his own story of redemption to validate his hard work and motivate others.

Its really awesome and humbling to see it all come to fruition now, he said. Im actually opening my own business. Its all really exciting.

Fitness mad mum reveals her impressive six pack just NINE DAYS after giving birth – The Sun

Massy Arias, 28, welcomed her daughter Indira Sarai into the world on February 28

A FITNESS trainer has impressed the web after showing off her rock hard abs just NINE DAYS after giving birth.

Instagram star Massy Arias, 28, welcomed her daughter Indira Sarai into the world on February 28 but just a little over a week later the LA based mum is flaunting a terrifically toned tum.

Massy took to Instagram to share a side-by-side photo of herself heavily pregnant alongside another shot of her showing off fit frame, with little Indira resting on her chest, just nine days postpartum.

Massy, who has more than 2.2 million Instagram followers, explained that she is currently recovering and eating the best she can while adding 600 to 800 extra of calories to her diet to support her milk supply.

She has yet to return to exercising but says that she is eating well by tracking the number of grams of protein, carbohydrates, and fats eats each day.

She wrote: You saw how active I was during my pregnancy and how well I ate.

I had a natural labour with no complications (thank God and to this lifestyle)

I am still practicing what I believe in: food is medicine and I dont deprive myself from any food groups.

I just EAT WHOLE AND EAT WELL.

According to Massy, she keeps her protein intake high to support her muscle and she drinks about a four and a half litre of fluids a day, mostly water.

Using the macro calculator on her program, Massy says that she has been able to maintain her physique without working out.

She added: Its amazing what you can do when you know specifically what to eat.

I do miss movement but first, I have to heal properly.

Thousands of people commented on the post, and with many praising Massy for how she had recovered.

One wrote: Looks like consistent hard work pays off. You look amazing

Another added: This is very impressive. The results of hard work and looking after yourself.

To attract more prison guards, state wants to suspend fitness requirements – Concord Monitor

Faced with the need to hire roughly 80 officers to guard the new womens prison, the Department of Corrections is seeking to suspend physical fitness requirements it says have disqualified dozens of applicants.

The Commissioner doesnt see it as a priority for our staff to be able to run a mile and a half during a specified period of time based on their age and gender when they work inside our prisons, said spokesman Jeff Lyons.

Gov. Chris Sununu is supportive, but a union representing corrections officers contends any reduction in standards could jeopardize staff safety.

To think that reducing (standards)is going to somehow fix the problem, it is going to make it worse, said Jeffery Padellaro, with the Teamsters Local 633.

The corrections department has struggled over the last few years to recruit enough people to guard the states three prisons in Berlin, Concord and Goffstown.

Last fiscal year, more prison guards left the job than the department hired, leading to a net loss of 11 corrections officers, Lyons said.

To make up for the staff shortage, prison guards have been forced to work overtime shifts. While employees are prevented from logging more than 16 hours in a row without an eight-hour break, many guards have to work double shifts multiple times a week, Padellaro said. As a result, department overtime spending has skyrocketed in recent years, from $3.3 million in 2009 to $9.1 million in 2015.

Republican Gov. Chris Sununus budget proposal calls for repealingthe requirement that corrections officers pass a nine-week certificationto get hired at a state prison. Sununu supports giving the department direct control over officer standards, said spokesman Dave Abrams.

The department is not seeking the full repeal, but rather a two-year suspension of physical fitness requirements so it can hire guards to work at the new womens prison in Concord, Lyons said.Dozens of job applicants have been found physically fit by a doctor, but havent been able to pass strength or running tests.

The fitness requirements are set by the Police Standards and Training Council, which runs training for law enforcement officers in New Hampshire, including state and local police, Fish and Game and the Department of Corrections.

Women between age 18 and 29 must be able to run 1.5 miles in 15 minutes, do 31 sit-ups in a minute and complete 14 push-ups, according to the police standards and training council. Men in that age range must be able to run 1.5 miles in 12:53 minutes, do 37 sit-ups in a minute and complete 27 push-ups. The requirements become more relaxed for older applicants.

Padellaro says the solution isnt suspending standards, but raising pay to attract more competitive applicants. The Teamsters recently declared an impasse in contract negotiations with the governors office because Sununu was unwilling to raise officer salaries, Padellaro said.

The pool of applicants could go to work at the federal prison system for $10,000 to $15,000 more for starting pay, or go right over the border to Massachusetts, he said.

Sununu said in a statement he was surprised anddisappointed by the stalled negotiations. The contract would cover the 2018 and 2019 fiscal years. Its not clear when talks will resume. This fiscal year, which ends in June, the corrections department has hired more workers than its lost for a net gain of 10 people.
