Fitbit Inspire 3 Review: A Tiny Fitness Tracker With Big Battery Life – CNET

The $100 Fitbit Inspire 3 (85, AU$180) is a great entry-level fitness tracker ideal for Fitbit newcomers as well as a major refresh for anyone upgrading from an older Fitbit. It has a color AMOLED display, a new menu system and the same long battery life. The Inspire 3 is compatible with Android and iOS to receive notifications or call alerts from your phone, plus it tracks sleep in the same way as the most expensive Fitbit trackers and smartwatches. So it's easy to recommend the Inspire 3 if you want the best battery life from any Fitbit -- 10 days -- without the bells and whistles from our current favorite, the $150 Charge 5.

The Inspire 3 comes with a six-month free trial of Fitbit Premium, the $10-a-month subscription service that unlocks more data on sleep and recovery. The previous Inspire 2 model came with a one-year trial. While not required to use the Inspire 3, Premium is fast becoming an essential part of the now-Google owned Fitbit experience and definitely something to consider when looking at the total cost over the lifetime of the device.

Plus, several less-expensive fitness trackers have been nipping at Fitbit's heels for the past few years so there's more competition than ever. In particular, the $60 Xiaomi Mi Band 7 has an even larger screen than the Inspire 3 and offers similar health features, even if it lags behind on sensor accuracy. Garmin also has the Vivosmart 5 with even more fitness-tracking options, but it's more expensive at $150 and has just a monochrome screen.

Earlier Inspire models had to make do with a monochrome display, but the Inspire 3 gets a boost with a color AMOLED screen. This is really the biggest reason to upgrade if you are coming from an older model, as it makes all the difference to the user experience without sacrificing battery. The case measures 1.55-inch, but the screen itself doesn't take up all the usable space on the device. Depending on the light, you can see the edges of the display and the bezels.

You might be curious about how the Inspire 3 compares to the $130 Fitbit Luxe, released in 2021. If you're choosing between the two, apart from price, the Fitbit Luxe is a tiny bit slimmer and its screen is a hair larger, but the difference is hardly noticeable unless you inspect them side-by-side. So unless you really value the sleeker look of the Luxe and want a more jewelry-like finish with bands and accessories, the Inspire 3 is a far better value overall.

The display can stay always on, so the clock face remains visible at all times, though that does eat into overall battery life, reducing it from 10 days to 3 days. The clock faces are all big enough for me to see, but I think if you need reading glasses, seeing your workout metrics on screen might be a bit of a challenge as the text is quite small.

Navigating the Inspire 3 is a little different than on earlier models. There are now two haptic buttons on either side that you can pinch to turn on the screen or to return to the clock face from any menu. Swipe left and right to access workout tracking, breathing exercises, timers and alarms or notifications from your phone. Swipe up and down to get to settings and your daily health overview, respectively.

A new $20 clip attachment lets you wear the Inspire 3 elsewhere on your body to track a workout when you can't wear it on your wrist, like for boxing. But the Inspire 3 doesn't have the same quick-release buttons as the Charge 5, which make it easier to swap bands; instead they're toggles that are quite fiddly to adjust. The Inspire 3 is water-resistant to 50 meters (164 feet).

The Inspire 3 without a strap, in the clip-on attachment.

For newcomers to Fitbit, the Inspire 3 can track steps, heart rate and blood-oxygen levels throughout the day and night. Workouts and sleep can be tracked automatically or manually as well. The Inspire 3 uses a metric called Active Zone Minutes to help you reach recommended activity levels, and it takes into account how much time you spend with your heart rate in certain zones, personalized to your age and fitness level. I really like how it's tracking all this passively in the background, even if I forget to start a specific workout. Just going up and down the stairs several times a day can help contribute to your Active Zone Minutes goals.

Starting a workout on the Inspire 3

The Inspire 3 has connected GPS rather than a GPS built-in to the device. This means you'll need to take your phone with you to track outdoor route information and distances for things like walks and runs. You can track over 20 different workout types with space to store six workout profiles on the device itself. To swap in your favorites, you need to load the Fitbit app then resync to the band.

The fitness tracking experience is pretty simple, though you can see heart rate, time elapsed, pace, calorie burn, steps and your active zone minutes goal by swiping through each screen during a workout. After you're done, it shows a quick summary of your metrics, and when you sync with the Fitbit app, you get the full rundown on your phone including route information and a map if it was an outdoor workout.

This tracker also has high and low heart rate alerts, plus irregular heart rhythm detection during sleep, which can notify you if it registers signs of atrial fibrillation.

Fitbit's sleep tracking is comprehensive, and even on this small device you still get a full deep dive into sleep stages. It's all easy to interpret in the Fitbit app when you sync each morning, and if you have Premium you'll see trends over time as well as metrics like skin temperature overnight. After 14 days of wearing the device, you'll get an in-depth sleep profile and each month you'll get an updated sleep animal that depicts your sleep style. I'm a tortoise, if you're playing along at home.

All your workout and sleep data is pulled together in the Daily Readiness Score, also a Fitbit Premium feature. This helps indicate if your body is up for taking on more activity that day, or if you should take it easy and concentrate on something a little more relaxing like breathing exercises or yoga. I'm a big fan of the score and love the personalized workout recommendations it gives. There's also a stress management score that can indicate how your body is coping with stress, calculated from metrics like heart rate, sleep and activity levels. A higher score means you're coping better, but I don't find it as helpful as the Daily Readiness Score overall.

The Inspire 3 is fairly bare-bones when it comes to smart features. You can see notifications come through from your phone, with the option to filter them by app type from the Fitbit app. There's a timer and alarm app built-in to the tracker, plus a find-my-phone feature to ping it so long as it's within Bluetooth range. It's also compatible with Google Fast Pair so it connects quickly to Android phones.

But that's about it. There's no Fitbit Pay for contactless payments from your wrist, music playback control or music storage onboard. Really, you're getting this tracker for its passive health and fitness monitoring -- not as a smartwatch alternative.

The 10-day battery life of the Fitbit Inspire 3 is really impressive, and includes sleep tracking, some basic workout tracking and essentially wearing the device 24/7 during my tests. That battery life matches the Inspire 2, even with the new tracker's more vibrant color display.

While battery life could vary based on your usage -- and substantially so if you use the always-on display mode that brings it down to three days of battery life -- I was still really impressed with not having to charge the tracker anywhere near as often as other Fitbit models I've reviewed.

Fitbit nails the formula for a basic fitness tracker with the Inspire 3, especially if you want something that tracks passively in the background with only occasional recharging. But its most useful features require Fitbit Premium, which is an additional monthly cost once the free trial is over.

The Inspire 3 should meet the needs of someone looking at Fitbit's slightly more expensive $130 Luxe tracker, and even surpasses it with longer battery life. But if you want Fitbit Pay and even more fitness-tracking features without spending extra on a Fitbit Versa smartwatch, the $150 Fitbit Charge 5 is the best overall buy.

Now playing: Watch this: The Fitbit Luxe matches style with substance

National Fitness Day is back, so get active and develop a fitter, healthier Ireland – Independent.ie

National Fitness Day is back with a bang this year. Leisure and fitness facilities across the country are opening their doors to the public with open days, classes of all kinds and free giveaways on Thursday next.

he aim of the day is to promote the benefits of physical activity, while showcasing the range of facilities, sports, and options available across the country for people to choose from. National Fitness Day is spearheaded by Ireland Active and supported by Sport Ireland, Healthy Ireland, and the European Commission.

Ireland Active is the national association for leisure, health and fitness sector and represent over 350 publicly and privately-owned leisure centres, gyms, swimming pools, fitness education providers and recreation facilities nationwide. They were instrumental in the safe return of gyms following the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns.

Now, Ireland Active are working tirelessly to lobby government in tackling the cost of the energy crisis which is causing havoc in the Irish leisure industry.

The bottom line is that without financial support in the upcoming budget, people are facing the loss of fitness and swimming facilities that they rely on for their health and wellbeing while children will lose out on learning to swim.

Over 60 Ireland Active member leisure centres and gyms will participate in National Fitness Day events. Schools will take part in a Take on the Teacher challenge, pitting students against teachers in sports day games in the hope of winning fitness equipment for their classrooms.

Offices and workplaces will also be putting on free yoga and aerobics classes as a way of invigorating staff while incorporating more physical activity into the workday.

Regular exercise has a number of beneficial factors, from creating a healthy mind and body to a greater quality of life. However, many of us find getting fit troubling. It becomes a challenge, and it shouldnt be that is why we believe a day like this is so important.

With a multitude of free events available on the day, it is a fantastic opportunity for those who might not be regular gym-goers to get moving and exercise.

David Nolan, National Fitness Day Ambassador and sports scientist, writes that: Being physically active and engaged in exercise has a wealth of benefits for your physical and mental health.

While you may be familiar with the physical benefits of improved fitness, reduced risk of lifestyle-related diseases and achieving a healthy weight, you may not be as au fait with the mental health benefits.

Those who exercise regularly, on average have better mood states, reduced anxiety, improved mental function and reduced risk of neurological diseases such as Alzheimers and other dementias.

National Fitness Day is for all demographics, whether old or young, gym fanatic or newcomer. For this reason, Ireland Active are partnering with ExWell Medical, who provide medically supervised exercise as a means of rehabilitation and disease prevention.

As Nolan explains: Exercise is especially important as you get older, particularly strength-based exercise as it strengthens your bones and muscles. This allows you to move better and maintain your independence and quality of life as you age. Strength exercises also reduce your risk of falls and fractures, which we all know can have a drastic impact on your health.

No matter your age or ability, there is a form of exercise you can reap the benefits of. Seek out qualified professionals who will be more than happy to help you get started. Whether its strolling, swimming, or squatting, you wont regret starting.

Our national physical activity guidelines recommend children and adolescents (2-18 years) should be engaging in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity for at least 60 minutes every day, while adults should be physically active for at least 30 minutes for five days a week. However, research has shown that only 13 per cent of children and 46 per cent of adults meet these guidelines.

In addition, significant gender gap in physical activity levels persists, with 54 per cent of men to just 38 per cent of women meeting the guidelines.

So, National Fitness Day is a nationwide effort to break down these barriers and provide free classes along with a welcoming and enjoyable experience to gym-goers. How you celebrate National Fitness Day is entirely up to you. However, there is no shortage of events taking place across the country.

Karl Dunne, Chief Executive of Ireland Active, sums it up well when he states: At Ireland Active, we are passionate about developing a fitter, healthier Ireland. This years National Fitness Day will run as part of the 2022 European Week of Sport, and we are particularly proud that we will play our part in what will be a fantastic week of activities.

After what has been a difficult year for our industry, we are really looking forward to seeing everyone get involved on the day and making use of the excellent facilities on offer across the country.

If you wish to get involved, a map of all activities in Ireland, along with sign up details can be found on nationalfitnesday.ie.

Flatten Your Stomach With This Total-body Workout, Fitness Expert Says Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

When you're trying to get lean, you may believe doing a few core exercises will lead to "a flat stomach." Contrary to your belief, you've got to put solid work in and keep up with your healthy habits. While cardio workouts for burning belly fat can be effective, when it comes to resistance training, full-body workouts are the way to go. To help you out, we've put together the ultimate total-body routine that'll help flatten your stomach.

The goal here is to incorporate ab-building exercises along with movements that tax the legs and the upper body. That way, not only will you get a productive ab workout in, but you'll also strengthen your entire body and burn more calories, which will help shave off those unnecessary pounds on top of your stomach.

This regimen is a circuit-style session. That means you'll move straight from one exercise to the nextwithout breaksuntil completing the circuit. You'll rest for 1 minute before repeating. So gear up, and keep reading for the total-body workout that'll flatten your stomach.

Grab a dumbbell or use just your body weight for this first exercise. Stand with your feet hip-width distance apart. Keeping your chest upright, push your hips back and down, and descend until your hips go below the height of your knees. Then, come back up, making sure to push your knees out as you go into the squat, and keep your weight on your heel. Perform 20 reps.

To perform pushups, put your hands on the floor in front of you, slightly wider than your shoulder width. Come up onto your toes with your arms straight in front. Lower until your chest touches the ground, then come back up. Perform 15 reps.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

For lunges, stand upright with your feet hip-width apart. Take one large step forward, and then lower your body until your thigh is parallel with the floor. Your knee should be at a 90-degree angle. When done, come back up, and switch sides. Perform 12 reps per side.

Grab a moderately heavy dumbbell or kettlebell, and find a bench or chair. Put one knee, along with the same-side hand, on the bench for support. Hold the weight with the opposite arm, and pull it up to your chest, making sure to keep your core engaged. Bring the weight back down until your arm is straight, and repeat. Perform 10 reps per side.

Get back into the same push-up position as before, but this time, bend your elbows and rest your forearms on the ground. Your elbows should be directly under your shoulders. When you are holding this position, make sure to keep your abs tight and keep your hips in the air with your glutes engaged. There should be a straight line from your shoulders all the way down your body to your ankles, so no sagging hips! Hold for 30 seconds.

For this final exercise that'll help flatten your stomach, lie on one side with your legs extended. Keep your feet stacked on top of each other. Bend your elbow, placing it directly underneath your shoulder, and lift your hips off the ground. Make your whole core stays activated. Perform a plank for 15 seconds per side.

Rest for 1 minute, then repeat the circuit 3 to 5 times.

TO YOUR HEALTH: Bring on fall with outdoor fitness, pumpkin soup – Herald-Banner

As fall is upon us, Im getting excited as I finally have some pumpkins popping up.

I have gourds from last season that I dried. I plan to make some maracas and birdhouses with them for the fall.

Also, a new fitness and wellness season is upon us.Fall days are great to to go outside to get a walk in, or go for a run, or do my boxing workouts in my outdoor gym in the woods.

Pumpkin recipes, soups and ciders are in the cauldron.

One of my favorite spices is turmeric. It pairs very well with curry, and I have a favorite recipe for curried pumpkin soup! You can make it vegan or add your favorite lean protein and have a hearty, healthy, power packed meal. Im including the recipe with this column.

I also make a delicious dark chocolate pumpkin pie that is loaded with nutrition and tastes amazing!

Pumpkin seeds are loaded with fiber and vitamins. They typically require slow chewing, which helps with mindful eating.

Pumpkin is filled with potassium and magnesium which can help with digestion and sleep.Antioxidants help prevent disease and protect your heart. This incredible gourd has tons of beta carotene, vitamin E, vitamin C and selenium. You can also use mashed pumpkin on your face to rejuvenate your skin.

Every part of a pumpkin is full of wonderful benefits.

You can make a jack-o-lantern and use the seeds and the fruit to make your family recipes or you can used the canned pumpkin and packaged seeds which are economical and easy.

Everlast Fitness Launches 8-week Training Camp with Jhon and Erny Matos – Business Wire

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Everlast, the leader in fight sports, launched an 8-week training camp on the only platform dedicated to boxing, the Everlast Fitness App. Designed by certified trainers and professional boxers, the training camp is led by national boxing world champions and brothers, Jhon and Erny Matos, who are also certified personal trainers.

The 8-week camp is designed for all levels of fitness, from veterans of the ring to people just starting their boxing journey. Brothers Jhon and Erny guide participants through round-based boxing circuits and help to establish a solid foundation of boxing training techniques. Each week, participants can expect three days of work in the gym and one day of roadwork homework, taking users through an intensive training program mirroring how some of boxings greats prepare for their next big fight.

Boxing is viewed as one of the hardest sports, and while its challenging, we believe that its meant for everyone. The key to mastering the sport is consistency and its a big part of why we helped format the 8-week Training Camp in this way, Erny Matos says. Our goal is to inspire and empower people with the chance to train like a champion and recognize the greatness within each of us.

Jhon and Erny Matos join professional boxers, Errol Spence Jr., and Heather Hardy along with, six other certified professional trainers on the Everlast Fitness roster. Combined, the Matos brothers bring in over 30 years of experience in boxing, 17 National Championships, and expertise in strength and weight training, cardio, HIIT, plyometrics and more, ripe for users to unlock their greatness through the 32-day program.

Weve stood by our clients over the course of their fitness journeys at 5th Street Gym for years. One of the most rewarding parts of being a pro-boxer, and now trainer, is that I get to share the things Ive learned with others to help them meet and surpass their goals. Now, we have the opportunity to reach even more people through new and innovative ways like Evelasts Training Camp and were honored to be a part of it, adds Jhon Matos. We are both passionate about making the sport more accessible and approachable for people and this training camp is a seamless way to do both.

Community is a cornerstone of our values at Everlast and we are honored to welcome the Matos brothers into the Everlast family and community, says Chris Zoller, Vice President of Marketing and Product Development at Everlast. Our goal is to democratize the sport of boxing and athletics in general, and the 8-week training program is another step towards increasing access to the pros, which is a huge step in the right direction.

The Humble Corkonian At The Forefront Of The Golf Fitness Movement – Balls.ie

An amateur rugby player would leap at the chance to work with the strength and conditioning coach at Leinster. Likewise, a young, aspiring, footballer may only dream of training with a Premier League fitness coach.

If golf is your sport of choice, regardless of ability and skill-level, then being trained by the best is a very real possibility.

Mike Carroll, just a humble lad from Cork, is at the forefront of the golf S&C movement. A trainer of the pros - Seamus Power, among others - he provides a service whereby anyone can avail of expertise.

Through his app and website, FitForGolf, Mike offers personalised training programs for those who sign up, along with free blog posts, a podcast, and exercise videos on his social media pages (he currently has 109k followers on Instagram, and 62.5k on Twitter).

We have come to associate S&C with with adding size and bulk, but when you apply it to specific sports with specific skills, it becomes so much more. Combined with advances in data analytics and the rise of wearable technology, golf is in the midst of a revolution, and, despite being unknown to many fans of the sport, Carroll, and the work that he does, should be seen as an integral part of it.

"Similar to a lot of people in Ireland I was in a pretty sporty household growing up," Mike Carroll tells. "A lot of GAA, soccer. I did a little bit of cross country in secondary school and picked up golf around the start of secondary school as well."

After being inspired by his brother to enrol in the Sport and Exercise Science degree at UL, and acquiring up weekend work at Fitness Works Cork, Mike gradually began to find his calling.

"I started training in the gym as well, I just had an interest in it. I could kind of see pretty quickly that I was interested in the transfer it had to sport. So I noticed after a couple of months of lifting weights in the gym I was hitting the golf ball way further, and I was a bit more powerful on the football field.

"As I was learning in college, I was also getting to practice making programs for general public and people who were interested in different sports. And then coming towards the end of the college degree I kind of had the idea that jeez theres a big gap in golf here in that theres nobody really doing. At least I didnt know about anybody doing good quality physical preparation for golf."

A natural progression for Mike was to get his TPI qualification. The program, run by golf equipment power-house Titleist, has been completed by the majority of golf's top fitness pros, and its website claims that '18 of the last 20 major championships were won by players advised by a TPI Certified Expert'.

During the course, which took place at the Belfry, Mike first met Simon Keelan, future caddie Seamus Power.

The TPI certification opened a whole new world for him, and a youthful ambition and adventurous nature would take him to California, not long after finishing in UL.

"I finished college in 2014, and then in 2016 I saw a job listing on the internet for a TPI certified strength and conditioning coach to work with golfers in Irvine, California.

"I was in my early 20s, was single, had no real ties to home, so I thought it was a great opportunity to work full-time with golfers. I got in touch with the job listing which was by a place called Hansen Fitness for Golf, which was a small studio in Irvine, and is very nearby to where I still am.

"Did a couple of interviews with the boss there, his name is Mike Hansen, and he was able to apply for a visa to sponsor me and come over and work for him. That was in October 2016, when I moved over."

FitForGolf then began to take shape. With a growing need to earn some extra cash on the side, and keep up with California's high cost of living, Mike began to build subscribers, while developing the website and the app.

With his experience from Hansen Fitness, and his portfolio from FitForGolf, he was able to apply for a greencard in 2021 and become self-employed, making FitForGolf his full-time job.

In the meantime he had begun to rub shoulders with some of the pros, and began with working with Charles Howell III in 2020, who had discovered Mike through his online content and videos.

Current world no. 78 Mackenzie Hughes copied Howell III in seeking the help of the Corkonian, before his most prestigious client, Seamus Power, followed suit.

"I think it was about three or four months later. My friend Simon [Keelan] had started caddying for Seamus, and I think Seamus had expressed interest that he was interested in maybe changing his physical training and maybe getting a new trainer.

"And Simon suggested to him that he have a chat with me, that I had been working with a few different players on the PGA Tour. Id probably dealt with maybe four or five of them at this stage. And Seamus just one day sent a message basically and asked if we could have a chat. I think that was in about the summer of 2020.

"I was really just trying to help him with his physical training programs, to help him come over his elbow surgery. Try and get him a little stronger more mobile there so he didnt have any nagging aching pain for that, and basically just make sure he is as best a shape possible to withstand the rigours of a PGA Tour season.

"And then most of the guys who get in touch are also interested in increasing their club head speed so they can hit the ball a little bit further, and hopefully have a knock-on effect to shooting lower scores."

Power, who currently lies at 41st in the world rankings, rocketed up from a lowly 459th in April 2021, to a career high of 36th in June of this year.

While Mike takes no credit for Power's phenomenal rise, we know that the margins at the very highest level of golf are atom-sized, and thus, each changeup in one's game and preparation has a sizeable impact.

Mike explains how sees his professional clients 2-4 times per year in person, and may rock up to tournaments for 3-4 training sessions during the week. The rest of the contact is online and through text, and he is currently working on an off-season training plan with Power.

Distance. It's a topic that has a large stake in the golfing sphere, and has brought both delight/awe, and skepticism.

While we can't help but be sucked in by Bryson DeChambeau turning monstrous par-fives into drive and half-wedge holes, there are concerns that courses will be unable to adapt to the ever-increasing average driving distance.

Mike's knowledge and insight does nothing to dispel neither the feelings of delight/awe, nor the skepticism.

He talks about Mark Broadie, the inventor of the Strokes Gained Data Analytics system, which is used by the PGA Tour. The system showed that those who scored highly in strokes gained off the tee, were those with the most success.

The number of golfers on the PGA Tour who are averaging over 300 yards is growing, while those languishing below 290 will continue to be left behind.

Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald, once world no.1, and only 44 years of age, finds himself at 566th in the world with an average driving distance of just 286.5.

Matt Fitzpatrick was once a notoriously short hitter, who scoffed at DeChambeau's search for power. He then saw the light, and worked tirelessly on his swing speed and distance, which resulted in him winning the 2022 US Open.

Young golfers are being taught to increase their ball and club head speed, above other attributes such as their accuracy and approach game.

The result is that players fresh out of college, and some still in college, are hitting the ball considerably longer than in years gone by, and it is leading to a greater amount of success on the PGA Tour at a younger age.

One name mentioned by Mike is Chris Gotterup. Fresh out of college, Gotterup talks about bending two irons with his club head speed, while his ball speed can reach over 200 mph (Cameron Champ, the PGA Tour's leading man in this area, has a ball-speed high of 194 mph this season)

Another interesting point which Mike puts forward, is the rise in the 'coolness' of golf. Young prodigious athletes who might once have chosen a different, more glamorous sport, are now opting to pick up a stick.

"Golf is now way cooler and popular. So athletes that would have once chosen basketball, or football, or baseball, or something like that when they're teenagers, now they might be deciding I want to play golf. So the pool of athletes that is going to be going into the US college system is going to be much more athletic.

"So then the ones who end up making it through college and out on tour, theyre going to have massive raw material that give them the tools they need to compete."
