Jennifer Sherlock demonstrates that fitness is for everyone through Life Balance Fitness in Greenwood
By Cleveland Dietz II
*Photo by Cleveland Dietz II: Jennifer Sherlock.
Since Life Balance Fitness opened for business last August, its clientele has grown more than sevenfold.
The small group studio hosts classes capped at 14 people throughout the day. Some allow parents to bring their children while they exercise.
One of the biggest things here, and its on all of our information, is that were fitness for everyone, owner Jennifer Sherlock said.
She has trained people with intellectual and physical limitations throughout her career. Sherlock prides herself on being able to adapt routines to the individuals without impacting the rest of the group.
Her own fitness journey began near the end of a 12-year career in construction as a project manager and custom home builder. She was laid off from her job and left the construction industry entirely.
She thought shed study to be a nurse practitioner, but it wasnt for her. Back then, Sherlock said, she was overweight, depressed, anxious and suicidal. Getting fit and becoming a group trainer at the Community Life Center helped her discover her passion.
I wanted to help people who were like me, who had hit the bottom of the barrel and didnt know how to take themselves out of it, she said.
By the time she graduated from IUPUI with a degree in exercise science in May 2016, she already had a lease for the studio and had been running classes out of her home.
Life Balance Fitness doesnt cater to the super athletic, Sherlock said. Her goal is to show people they can be fit even if they arent ripped like a fitness person.
Im breaking the norms of fitness, she said.
Why did you open this business?
Theres a need for small group training places for people that want personal training that cant afford personal training, but they want to have the accountability.
What did you do to prepare for opening your business?
I knew I was going to have to get something larger. Because this space has been empty for so long it wasnt like I was biting off way more than I could chew. That was probably the biggest thing. A lot of places are so expensive and this is a very inexpensive place to lease.
Who is your ideal customer/client?
[People] who need more accountability, somebody who can say, Why werent you here?
How do you plan to be successful?
I plan to be successful by helping my clients reach their goals and do the things that they want to.
What would we be surprised to learn about you or your company?
I dealt with severe depression, severe anxiety, [I was] suicidal. I was a very sick person. Thats probably the biggest surprise. My clients see who I was before and see me now. That gives them hope.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez building fitness, eyes first-team spot – ESPN FC
Jurgen Klopp has said his Liverpool side need a reaction after their 3-1 loss to Leicester in the Premier League.
Liverpool's Joe Gomez says he is still looking to build up his match fitness as he looks for a first-team recall.
The young defender is continuing his comeback following a year out with ACL and Achilles injury, and has made three appearances for Jurgen Klopp's side this season.
Gomez, who signed a long-term contract at Anfield back in January, has also been regularly featuring for the club's under-23s side and played 90 minutes against West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night.
"It's important that I keep building," he told the club's official website. "You can always keep learning and it's good for me to keep getting minutes, as well as learning in training from everyone in the first team.
"I feel very good. I feel like I'm learning and finding myself each game. It's a great experience for me and good to come into such a strong team and be able to play a part.
"It's important that I come into every game and keep getting into good habits and doing my best to help be a leader within the team. We've got a great bunch of lads, some great talent and we have to just keep learning and building and we'll keep progressing."
The centre-back started all three of Liverpool's FA Cup ties this season, but has yet to appear in the Premier League.
Sources told ESPN FC in December that Klopp considers the England under-21 international to be the "real deal."

Bluegrass, and old time, fitness ideas for spring – Bluegrass Today
Its the first of March, and if warm weather hasnt hit where you are (not even close where I am), its coming soon. Its a time when some of us start to think about fitness, or at least about other peoples fitness. The winter fat layer has been building since Christmas, not counting that traditional burst of fitness awareness which takes up the first week of January, at most. Many of us just dont feel bluegrass festival-ready, especially for the traditional evening swimwear set that many bands play at festivals (maybe you dont stay up late enough to catch those shows).
For road musicians, finding a consistent plan for physical exercise is challenging. Were told that sitting is the new smoking, which isnt good news for us; most of us were under the mistaken impression that sitting is the new black, or the new untucked shirt. A new study (published by a guy somewhere) estimates that your average road musician sits for the equivalent of at least three packs a day. This puts us at risk for all sorts of health issues, like heart disease, diabetes, and standing.
For Bill Monroe and his band, physical fitness was never a problem: in the early days, he had all of his band members organized into a baseball team (Lester Flatt at third). Bill also worked with draft horses when he was home, and he was renowned for getting his band members to work on the farm with him. He also danced on stage.
How far weve fallen since the robust Blue Grass Boys of the 1940s. What we need to turn around our mushy road lifestyle is a program that turns our everyday road picker activities into fitness opportunities. Here are a few to consider:
Long Distance Parking: Youve maybe heard it suggested that you should park in the area of the lot thats farthest from the entrance. Almost no one in the world has ever heeded this advice, but its something you can easily try when making a stop for food. This is not only a good chance for some exercise, but it also saves you the tedium of driving around searching for the closest space (or having your spouse point out the closest space to you). In some big cities, this far corner of the lot might be where the drug deals are taking place; this just adds the element of danger, which in turn raises your heart rate in a beneficial way. If you explain that you didnt see what theyre doing, they might not kill you.
You should note that its unlikely any of your other band members are going to go for this plan, so youll have to drop them all at the door first. Saying, see you later, lazy slobs is probably not the best way to foster good band relations. Go ahead and say it anyway.
The Bathroom Sprint: Once seated in a restaurant, make sure to sit at a table rather than a booth, or take the outside seat of a booth. As soon as you give your order, instead of sauntering over to the bathroom as you normally would, stopping to sign autographs for people who have no idea who you are, run there at top speed. This will alarm some people in the restaurant, many assuming you have some serious intestinal disorder, but theyll get over it, and youll have turned your restaurant experience into an essential part of your fitness plan. Make sure to run back to your seat (also unnerving to the other patrons). This makes it what the fitness experts call interval training.
Instrument Unloading: Volunteer to unload everybody elses instruments and luggage at every gig.
Maybe that isnt such a good idea.
The Instrument Press: Lie down with your palms open and facing up. Ask a band member or friend to place an instrument case across your chest on your hands and push your arms up, elevating the instrument for ten reps. Do three sets on each instrument, eventually working up to the banjo, the bass, and for the more advanced, a small fiddle player.
The Merch. Table Run: First, run to set up your merchandise (this will just look like youre trying to beat other bands to the best spot). Once your wares are set up, instead of sitting around, staring blankly into space while you wait for customers, run in place behind your table, or do some jumping jacks. This may attract attention and even customers. Try to maintain a jogging pace even when visiting with fans and signing CDs.
The Last Minute Festival Stage Run: Even though youve arrived in plenty of time for your show, deliberately stand at least 100 yards away, but within earshot of the stage. Have your instrument tuned and ready to go. Then wait until you hear your band being introduced and run like crazy to the stage, shouting Im here! Im here! while you do. It will get your heart rate up, and create an atmosphere of excitement around the start of your show.
The Really Long Fiddle Tune: Studies show that in order to derive any fitness benefit from playing instrumentals, they need to be played for at least 12 minutes. So instead of taking a tune twice around and ending it, try playing a long fiddle tune medley. You can also just play the same tune about 20 times in a row. This is also called old time music.

Shirtless Man Spends Night Inside Waterville Fitness Club, Orders Pizza for Police – WABI
A bizarre situation was captured on surveillance camera over the weekend as a man spent seven hours inside a Waterville fitness center after it closed for the day.
What he is accused of doing shocked and surprised police.
Eric Davis is accused of squatting at Champions Fitness Center Saturday night. The operations manager at the gym checked her security cameras online at 2 a.m. Sunday and got the surprise of a lifetime.
Through remote access I was able to view and see that there was an unknown person standing right here, writing things down with no shirt on, Renee Raymond said.
Police said David helped himself to drinks and punched out a ceiling tile in the locker room and ring down the wires, disconnecting the music.
My theory is that the music was loud in there, maybe he wanted to take a nap, Raymond said.
Police said he also ordered eight pizzas from Dominos and had them delivered. He kept two for himself, sent four to the police station and two to Hannaford.
Security alarms sounded between 8 and 10 p.m. Police checked on it twice, but did not see anything out of the ordinary.
The third alarm prompted Raymond to check the surveillance app on her phone.
I see him help himself to a towel. He knew right where they were apparently that was his next step, going to take a shower in the locker room, Raymond said.
Police arrived and arrested Davis.
As they took him into custody he said, No. No you dont understand. Im Basher, the security officer that works here, and obviously he was not, police Chief Joe Massey said.
Davis is facing several charges, including burglary, theft and criminal mischief.
I actually feel bad for the guy. He wasnt here to hurt anybody. Police said he does not have a history of violence, so that made us feel better, Raymond said.

Fitness Blogger Mallory King Says Instagram Removed Her Proud Cellulite Selfie – Allure Magazine
While Instagram has become a beloved platform for posts that spark conversations about self-love and body inclusivity, it also has a track record of allegedly deleting those same kinds of posts, which don't seem to be in violation of their rules. For instance, there was a time three curvy girls showed off their adorable swimsuits only for the picture to allegedly be deleted, or when Instagram was accused of removing a photo of a fully clothed woman with period blood-stained pants. Instagram also [deleted] a partially clothed woman's "booty appreciation" selfie, only to later apologize for removing it.
"We try hard to find a good balance between allowing people to express themselves creatively and keeping Instagram a fun and safe place," a rep said at the time. "Our guidelines put limitations on nudity and mature content, but we recognize that we dont always get it right. In this case, we made a mistake and have since restored the content."

Perhaps Instagram made another mistake when it allegedly removed a recent photo taken by fitness blogger Mallory King. The picture in question was a response to trolls who jumped at King in her comments section after she posted a photo proudly revealing her cellulite. King's next move was to post a side-by-side photo of herself with her cellulite front and center as she was giving the middle finger, on the right, and giving a thumbs up with her boyfriend, on the left. "To that guy who made a negative comment about my cellulite yesterday," she wrote in the photo's caption, as Cosmopolitan.com points out . "There are so many worse things in life than cellulite, like your shitty attitude. Let people do whatever the fuck they want and look however they please and post whatever makes them happy. Find a hobby and worry about ya damn self."
Courtesy
However, once the photo was regrammed by @SundayMorningView, it was mysteriously deleted.
King commented on the removal of the photo in another post, writing, "If you follow @sundaymorningview you probably saw the image they posted of me that's very similar to this one except I was giving the middle finger to the haters that leave negative comments about my cellulite. The image blew up, getting an overwhelmingly positive response. Well, that image was deleted by @instagram this morning. This upsets me for two reasons 1) Why do thousands of posts go unremoved that show butts and boobs in WAY more vulgar ways than mine? Is it because my cellulite is offensive? Is it because I'm not trying to be sexy? Is it because I don't have the body type that is continuously shared on here? 2) Why are people so threatened by a woman unafraid of showing her body and speaking her mind? People used the excuse that their kid could see the photo. Don't let your kid on social media! No, that's not it. It's either people feel threatened by my fierceness or people are so brainwashed by media that a perfect pair of tits or butt is fine to flash but a body that's outside of the norm is offensive. Fuck that. Y'all can report my photos as much as you want, I'm gonna keep sharing them because the world needs more women unashamed of their bodies and unafraid to share their voice."
More body positivity:
Instagram's website clearly states that the number of times a photo gets reported doesn't actually make the company remove the photo. So, if Mallory King's picture was in fact deleted, it's not because people reported it. It also doesn't seem like the photo violated nudity guidelines , which state that you cannot post "photos, videos, and some digitally-created content that show sexual intercourse, genitals, and close-ups of fully-nude buttocks." As Cosmopolitan.com notes, the possible use of the middle finger isn't a violation either, as there are currently more than 370,000 posts hashtagged with #middlefinger. .
We've reached out to Instagram for comment and will update this story when we hear back.

Workout woes: 3 fitness-related side effects and how to fix them – Philly.com (blog)
Does your fitness routine make you feel funny? Im not talking about knock-knock joke funny, I mean runny nose, side stitches and bubbly bowels, funny.
If you workout, you may have experienced some of these bizarre exercise-related symptoms. While exercise improves our cardiovascular health, muscle strength and overall well-being, it also can cause some fitness related frustrations, like that not-so fun moment at mile two when you get the runs from your run.
If you suffer from exercise-induced symptoms, check out these quick fixes to turn your aches and pains into gains.
If a case of the sniffles comes on every time you workout, grab a tissue because this is definitely an annoying issue. When exercising, your body requires increased oxygen levels to perform. This heavy breathing can dry out the nasal passages resulting in an increased production of mucus to lubricate your airway.
The easiest and most obvious cure for a runny nose is to pack a few tissues in your pocket on your next exercise excursion. If you find that your leaky nose is too much to tolerate, and is really interfering with the quality of your exercise, visit your physician for an exam and ask for a nasal spray prescription.
Youre laced up, stretched out and ready to hit the streets for your evening run. One problem: youre only halfway through your jog before a serious side stitch slows you down.
So whats really cramping your stomach and your style? Here are the top offenders:
Exercise can make you feel pooped and like you have to poop - badly. Sorry, theres no pretty way to phrase it, and unfortunately it happens to the best of us. The stomach is stressed while running. Things are jumping and bumping around, which causes the digestion process to accelerate. At the same time, blood is being redirected from the stomach to the working muscles, which affects its ability to function properly.
Dehydration, anxiety and bad food choices can also cause stomach distress. Luckily, there are ways to help this frustrating fitness side effect, so dont go flushing your workout down the toilet just yet.
Guidelines for Guzzling:
If all else fails, choose a workout location where you have easy access to a restroom.
Know how to stop your symptoms before they start.
Earn it.

The best fitness trackers 2017 – BGR
Whether theyre counting your steps or helping you keepcaloric tabson that late-night McDonalds trip, fitness trackers have taken the guesswork out of personal health. Now, weve taken the guesswork out of fitness trackers.
After someintensive research and comparisons, weve found the best fitness trackers money can currently buy. Understanding that everyone is unique in their fitness needs, we hunted down a diverse selection of trackers and looked for the best inpure monitoringcapability, style, and affordability.
The end result? There really is a fitness trackerfor everybody. Lets take a look at the best fitness trackers of 2017.
You knowthat guy at work who constantly bragsabout topping10,000 steps onhis Fitbit? He may actually be on to something.
Jokes aside, Fitbit stepped up its game with the new Fitbit Charge 2, delivering a sleek and stylish fitness tracker thats jam-packed with coveted features, all at a surprisingly affordable price point. While the aforementioned step counting is as sharp as ever, theres so much more to love about this devicefrom Fitbit.
For starters, the Fitbit Charge 2 is one of the more aesthetically pleasing fitness trackers, boasting a slender OLED display, steel body, and interchangeable bands to match your personal style. The tap-sensitive display is markedly better than its predecessor the Fitbit Charge HR.
Speaking of the Charge HR, the Fitbit Charge 2 kept its forerunners most important feature: an optical heart rate monitor. The wrist-based monitor offers a 24/7 look at your cardiac activity, including some stellar features in the Fitbit app that chartout yourheart rate for the day. In typical Fitbit fashion, the app can also assigned you a Cardio Fitness score that gives you something to aspire to. By takingyour body mass index (BMI) andyour average resting heart rate, the Fitbit app will assign you a score and let you know how well youre doing for your age and gender. Admittedly, this can be somewhat demoralizing at the start, but its always good to have goals, right?
Lets talk more about the Fitbit app; its fantastic. For many people, its the single biggest draw to the Fitbit brand and its completely warranted. The easy to use app tracks literally everything, including steps (duh), stairs, nutrition, water consumption, and even your standing time. In fact,if you stand too long, Fitbit will nudge you to stop standing still and start knocking out those hourly steps. If theres any single unblemished selling point for the Charge 2, its got to be the Fitbit app.
Of course, its not always about getting the heart pumping. The Fitbit Charge 2 also houses a handy feature called Relax that helps you catch your breath properly. Sounds nice, doesnt it? Really, theres no frills here; its a simple timed breathing guide that helps you properly recover from you toughest workout.
Unfortunately, nothing is perfect. Even though the Fitbit Charge 2 is the best overall fitness tracker on the market, theres still some pitfalls that Fitbit should address. The most glaringis that the Charge 2 isnt waterproof. At all. Yes, itll hold up to sweat and a fair amount of rain, but taking this tracker for a quick swim or accidentally wearing it in the shower will ruin it and likely your day.
A far less egregious issue(but still annoying) is the lack of native GPS. Essentially, if you want to map out your runs, youre going to have to lug your phablet along with you. While thats not a deal breaker for most, its certainly alienates a corner of the diehard fitness market.
The battery life is a middle-of-the-road 5 days, which isntbad, its just not great. The heart rate monitor also gets a little finicky with more elevated heart rates, but thats fairly par for the course when it comes to wrist-based heart monitors. Other than the glaring GPS and waterproof omissions, these issues are fairly minor nitpicks that youd likely find with any fitness tracker sold today.
Despite its minor flaws, the Fitbit Charge 2 is the best all around fitness tracker on the market. With an unparalleled app, stylish design, and renowned tracking proficiency, this device checks all the right boxes for the everyday consumer. Foran affordable $129, you cant find a better fitness tracker today.
If youre looking for a fitness tracker that can hang with the most vigorous workout routine, its time to check out the Garmin Vivoactive HR.
This beast of a fitness tracker from Garmin is designed with the fitness buff in mind. The always-on display allows you to sift through an impressive 15 activity modes, including golf and skiing, to get the most out of whatever your workout of choice is. You can also design your own workout and add it to the roster.
Much like the Fitbit Charge 2, this fitness tracker features a wrist-based optical heart rate sensor. This monitor tracks your heart rate constantly and charts out your daily cardio records to help you keep tabs on the health of your heart. Much like the Fitbit, its not perfect, especially with elevated heart rates. If it becomes bothersome, you can pair your Vivoactive HR with a Garmin chest strap and get a considerably more accurate heart rate reading.
Now, lets get to the best part; theGarmin Vivoactive HR is waterproof. Thats right, you can take this puppy swimming up to 5o meters, something our top pick overall was unfortunately lacking. The only downside is that the optical heart rate monitor shuts off when you hit the water, meaning you may miss an important spike in your daily cardiac data, but this isnt unusual with heart rate monitors.Still, if swimming is an important part of your daily workout, it may be worth shelling out the extra money for the Garmin Vivoactive HR.
This tracker also includes on-board GPS another feature the Fitbit was missing. While this isnt as big of a deal as water resistance, the Garmins GPS is a strong selling point to runners who dont necessarily want to keep trackoftheir phones on arun. The battery life is also impressive, lasting up to 8 days without GPS use, placing it among the best in its class.
So why wasnt this our top pick? Unfortunately, the Garmin Vivoactive HR is far from perfect.
On a shallow level, it just doesnt look as good as the Fitbit. Although the large display is nice for checking phone notifications at a glance, the end result is an oversized, somewhat clunkydesign that bears a vagueresemblance to acalculator watch from a distance. Still, aesthetics are no realreason to knock points off of a quality product.
The most glaring issues with the Garmin Vivoactive HR lie in its software. The Garmin app is a confusing mess compared to the sleek and intuitive design of the Fitbit app and truly hinders the potential of this well-built fitness tracker. Theres also numerous reports of syncing hiccups that can quickly become an annoyance. The reality is that a well designed app and fluid software are often more sought after by the general consumer than even the handiesthardware.
The Garmin Vivoactive HR may have some rough patches in its software and app, but its water resistance and native GPS make it a must own for any true fitness die-hard.
If youve always wanted to track your steps while you burn up the wedding dance floor, this is the tracker for you.
The Garmin Vivomove Premium is designed for one thing: style. This classy looking timepiece is the 007 of fitness trackers, going undercover with ease in any situation. But does it do anything other than just look good?
Admittedly, the Vivomove is mostly about style, but the Garmin also offers solid, yet bare-bones fitness tracking, limited to measuring steps, sleep, distance, and calories. Surprisingly, the Vivomove is also waterproof up to 50 meters, just like the Vivoactive HR. The most impressive piece on the Vivomove is the battery, which lasts a year. Yes, an entire year.
Unfortunately, this tracker is plagued with the same issues that the Vivoactive HR was. Namely, software connectivity issues and a confusing app. It also is missed some key fitness tracker features, like phone notifications and a heart rate monitor.
Its not the most practical fitness tracker by a long shot, but if youre in the market for a stylish watch, you might as well get one that tracks your steps and your sleep.
For thoselooking to try a fitness tracker not wanting to drop the big bucks, theres the Xiaomi Mi Band 2.
Right off the bat, of course this $37 tracker isnt going to hang with competition. However, the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 packs quite a punch for the price. This affordable band includes automatic step counting and sleep monitoring, as well as a heart rate monitor that you can check when your pulse spikes. Its also got a passable display to give you all the information you need, with a touch-sensitive button to navigate.
As you may have guessed, this insanely affordable fitness tracker is far from perfect. Namely, theres no exercise tracking a staple in every other fitness tracker. The accompanying Mi Fit app is also nowhere near as intuitive as say Fitbits, but thats to be expected. However, none of the negative are enough to outweigh the incredible value for anyone looking for an affordable tracker. Just keep in mind that if youre looking for anything more than the basics, you may want to check out the other selections on our list.
This is a classic case of getting exactly what you pay for an affordable, no-nonsense tracker that covers the basics, and not much else. Still, at such a cheap price point, the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 is a perfectly competent step and sleep tracker.
