Planet Fitness opens in Pine Bluff – Pine Bluff Commercial

Planet Fitness opened a gym Monday in Pine Bluff, affording another option for people to exercise.

Apart from a Planet Fitness gym in Fayetteville, Arkansas is one of the last states to be developed by the franchise. The company bills itself as an environment without judgments.

Planet Fitness members came to the gym on Friday afternoon, using weight machines, treadmills and elliptical machines.

Virginia Flemister joined Planet Fitness and exercised on a weight machine. She called the environment clean and comfortable. A Pine Bluff resident, Flemister plans to exercise at Planet Fitness for a long time. If not for the new gym, she would exercise at the Jefferson Regional Medical Centers Wellness Center.

Rob Baker became a member and was walking briskly on a treadmill on Friday. He noted that he will exercise inside whether the outdoor temperature is cold or hot.

I signed up when they advertised in the newspaper, Baker of Pine Bluff said.

He planned to use the cycle and lift weights and visit the massage bed.

Thats my reward after I get through working out, Baker said with a smile.

Ken Horn is the marketing manager of PF Arkansas, the franchisee who operates the Planet Fitness club at 2801 S. Olive St. in the Jefferson Square Shopping Center. He noted the center is open and staffed 24 hours per day and seven days per week.

It is really important to be available for people to start and continue a healthy lifestyle, Horn said. We make sure no one is by themselves. We opened a day earlier than expected. We had an eight-week pre-sale period. We have seen a lot of folks try us out in the first four or five days.

He declined to release membership numbers.

Pine Bluff has taken to the judgment-free concept, Horn said. We are excited to sign folks up. We love the fact that people seem to appreciate our location in Jefferson Square Mall. We are looking forward to a long future in Pine Bluff.

Fitness or fatness? The choice is ours – The Augusta Chronicle

Theres a new study out saying Augusta is one of the unhealthiest cities in America.

Wed tell you to take it with a grain of salt, but theyd probably ding us for that, too.

But the truth is, all these various rankings, regardless of their methodology and sincerity, are subjective and suspect.

The recent WalletHub.com survey ranks Augusta 141st out of 150 cities in terms of health using four criteria: health care, food, fitness and green space.

OK, well try to look at it objectively, though its hard to when your hometown is getting shamed.

You would think health care would be in Augustas favor. Weve got terrific hospitals and our vibrant health care community is the envy, and the destination, of the region.

As for our food, fitness and green space well, all right, we could stand some improvement there.

Augusta is cherished as a bit of Old South and that comes with a diet that is infamously fattening and unhealthy. A 2015 study, wrote Forbes magazine, reported that People who reported high adherence to a Southern style diet had a 56 percent increased risk of developing coronary heart disease.

It may be one reason that our 11-state region Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia is known as the stroke belt.

And while outdoor sports are wildly popular here, the kind of green space that invites vigorous exercise often comes at a premium in cities such as ours.

In our defense, walking, biking and jogging trails are growing in the area, and the Augusta Canal and its towpath are a jewel were only now discovering the full value of.

One of our challenges one of Americas challenges is promoting the kind of healthy eating that leads to healthier, more active lifestyles. Augusta is home to more poverty than it should be, and poor households often have poor eating habits and availability. Indeed, on that last point, the closing of the Kroger on 15th Street means the drying up of food availability for the area.

Our obesity rate reportedly at about 35 percent was a big factor in WalletHubs ranking.

So, while we might take issue with being 141st in the country, theres definitely room for improvement in Augustas health.

We encourage folks who are concerned about their own health and lifestyle to take that first step toward doing something about it. Join one of the growing gyms in the area. The Family Y not only has great facilities, but also great programs and classes (as do most private fitness facilities). Take up bicycling or jogging or walking on the canal or at an area recreation center.

Then theres the Kroc Center at 1833 Broad St. a terrific community and fitness center made possible by the generosity of Ray and Joan Kroc, founders of McDonalds.

The riverwalk is a great place to walk or jog or even have a moving meeting. Downtown strolling is available every day, too.

Whatever you can do to get healthier, do it for yourself. Do it for your loved ones. Do it for your city. We cant take this lying down.

Take a minute to boost your fitness the easy way – Irish Times

Trainer Claire Mc Glynn has seen mobility, strength, fitness, self-belief and confidence boosted in her classes.

If you think that running for the bus is a waste of time, think again. Even if you dont catch that bus, you will be doing a lot more for your fitness than you might realise. The latest research shows that taking exercise in short bursts could be just what the doctor ordered. Its known as high-intensity interval training (Hiit) and it is now part of any fitness instructors offering. Even those who cant be bothered to go to a gym or who dont have the time can benefit.

High-intensity training means really pushing yourself for a short amount of time, resting, then pushing yourself again. Whats shocking is how little time it can take to make a difference to your fitness.

A report published in the PLOS One journal last year followed two groups over 12 weeks: one spent just 10 minutes on training that included intense intervals that added up to one minute; the second group worked out at a moderate, even pace for 45 minutes. The surprise is that the two groups saw similar improvements in health. There are a number of other studies showing equally encouraging results.

Claire Mc Glynn, a competitive weightlifter and personal trainer at cmgfit.com in Dublin, loves to use Hiit and says it is the best and quickest way to achieve positive results in your physical and mental health. Its very simple really everyone knows that when you put 100 per cent of effort into something, you get the best results and there is no exception when it comes to exercise.

Mc Glynn points out that she can do the same Hiit routine as a beginner, but if they both do it at their top level of intensity, they both benefit dramatically. There is no need for modification of a routine for beginners. They key is to feel that you are pushing past your own comfort.

They might curse me for asking them to do it, she says, but once theyre doing it, the adrenaline kicks in and its just a matter of working through the process. Afterwards, endorphins happy hormones have been released and theyre tired, yet contented and have an air of accomplishment, and sometimes surprise at what they have been able to achieve.

The 29-year-old runs hardcore classes in CrossFit353, which involves using heavy weights or pushing around massive tyres for fun. But she also teaches members of the Retired Teachers Association of Ireland, who are between 50 and 70.

Their progress has been unbelievable. Many started with me two years ago and now they are blitzing sessions of many, many squats, lunges, push-ups, plank holds for up to three minutes and so on. Their mobility, strength, fitness, self-belief and confidence has increased tenfold.

Hiit also boosts your metabolism, ie the rate at which you burn calories, for hours afterwards.

Good form is key on whatever exercise you are doing, she says. There is no point in repping out 100 squats if your back is rounded and knees are caving in, youll just do more harm than good.

You dont have to join a class to experience the benefit, however. These are principles you can put into practice every day. This doesnt mean you should give up on beach walks, rather that you should run after that bus with abandon, for a minute anyway. And regardless of whether you catch it or not, you will have done yourself some good.

The World Health Organisation advises adults do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity a week or at least 75 minutes of vigorous activity. Incorporating Hiit doesnt mean slacking off, simply realising that a few sharp bursts can be valuable too.

If you cannot exercise most days, but try to get out at the weekend, take heart. A report last month in the JAMA Internal Medicinejournal shows that weekend warriors, who did all their exercise on one or two days of the week, were found to lower their risk of dying from cardiovascular disease by 41 per cent and cancer by 18 per cent, compared with the inactive. Even those who didnt manage to get the 150 minutes of activity advised by the WHO reduced their risk of early death by one-third.

For those not exercising now, walking quickly can count as high-intensity if you push yourself. Even a brisk 20-minute daily walk could reduce your risk of early death, according to research published in the American Journal of Clinical Exercise in 2015. The study of more than 334,000 Europeans found that twice as many deaths may be attributable to a lack of physical activity compared with the number attributable to obesity, but that a modest increase in physical activity could have significant health benefits.

An earlier study in the Lancet in 2012 said that inactivity was killing about as many people as smoking.

If you have been following this series, you should be eating a pretty balanced diet that gives you more energy. Put that energy to good use by adding in some extra exercise or even just some exercise.

The maxim still holds that you cannot outrun a bad diet, but to be healthy you need to do some exercise too. Using the principles of high-intensity interval training is an easy and effective way to achieve results without putting in too much effort.

Ashley Borden of the Body Foundation in California, who has trained actor Ryan Gosling, says she uses Hiit training because it is efficient, burns fat and builds muscle. There is no need to have any fancy equipment either, just the focus to really go for it for half a minute at a time.

This all comes with a proviso, of course: as with any form of exercise, you need to be in fairly decent shape to get started. If not, or if you are on medication or have any concerns or conditions, check with your doctor first. And wear the appropriate footwear. Then go for it.

This Busy Mom’s Hack To Make Time For Fitness: Work Out With Her Baby – SELF

When personal trainer Danielle Jones had her first daughter, Honor, two years ago, working out became a totally new ballgame. Joneswho goes by Ms. Boston on Instagramdidn't have a problem motivating herself to hit the gym. But the new mom didn't want to leave her newborn behind while she worked to shed her baby weight. Her solution: Incorporate Honor into her workouts.

She started working out at home with Honor, doing things like push-ups down to her level, giving her kisses after each rep. She'd do sit-ups, too, with Honor sitting on her stomach, getting a kiss each time she crunched her core. And she'd do squats, holding Honor as a weight . For Jones, it was a game changer.

"It became part of our playtime so I didnt have to feel like I was depriving my child and neglecting her just to work out and worry about myself," Jones tells SELF. "I included her in it. It was like, Hey, you helped me gain this weight, so youre going to help me lose it. Were in this together."

Jones did these mini at-home workouts with Honor exclusively for the first ten months following her pregnancy. And Honor loved it. "It made it a lot easier seeing how much she enjoyed it, because she loved it," Jones says. "When I used her as a weight even when she was two months old, she would laugh."

Even after Jones got back into the gym for her regular workouts, she and Honor kept at their home workouts , too. Honor quickly progressed from watching her momand serving as a handy weightto mirroring the workouts alongside her. "The older she got the more she started copying me, and now I look over and see her trying to do the same thing," Jones says.

Today, Jones shares photos and videos of the duo working out on her Instagram, @ msboston . And it's pretty cute stuff. While Jones breaks a sweat, Honor does toowith her own flair added to the moves, of course. "Well be doing push-ups and half the time shes not doing a push-up shes doing a plank," Jones says. "But hey, she thinks shes doing it and one day she will be able to do it. Practice makes perfect."

Jones is working on a fitness calendar featuring her and Honor, and she one day hopes to open a mommy-and-me gym. If she does, Honor seems like she'd make a pretty good fitness coach. "Now it's to the point where shes like, Mom, we didnt work out today! Are we going to work out?" Jones says. "Its something she knows is a part of her life."

Is New Balance’s RunIQ fitness smartwatch a rival to Apple Watch … – CIO

CIO.com's resident reviewer, tech addict and fitness fanatic James A. Martin puts the latest apps, mobile devices, health gadgets and wearable technologies through the paces.

New Balance is looking to win the fitness smartwatch marathon with its recently introduced Android Wear-based RunIQ. But how does it compare to Apple Watch Series 2, which is also fitness focused and shares some core features such as built-in GPS and heart-rate monitoring? I wore both for more than a week to find out.

RunIQ is $300, while the least expensive Apple Watch Series 2 is $369.

RunIQ has a similar perforated band comparable to Apple Watch Nike+ (also $369 and up), the Nike-branded version of Apples Series 2 smartwatch. Both bands are comfortable to wear. But RunIQ feels heavier and bulkier on the wrist.

No wearable Ive tested and Ive tested quite a few has a better screen than Apple Watch Series 2. Its bright and easy-to-read in any circumstance, including outside on a day with bright sunshine.

With RunIQ, I needed to crank the brightness level up to 4 or 5 (the latter is the highest setting) to easily read the screen under sunny skies. Unfortunately, the brightness bump can be a serious battery drain.

Example: I went for a 30-minute run using GPS and heart rate tracking with RunIQ fully charged. After the run, the battery was at 76 percent; the brightness level was 5.

New Balance says the 410mAh battery should last 24 hours, or up to five hours when using GPS and heart-rate tracking.

Imagine that youre ready to run. You step outside, tap the running icon on the RunIQs home screen, and wait for the watch to fix on a GPS signal. In my tests, the wait was typically between one and three minutes. When youre running in inclement weather, three minutes feels like 30.

Now imagine youre wearing an Apple Watch. You step outside, say Hey Siri, start a run, and within a few seconds, youre ready to go, and so is the GPS. It doesnt get any easier than that.

Its worth mentioning that RunIQ has three buttons: one to start/stop a run or cycling workout; one serves as a home button; the third controls laps or music. Apple Watch has two.

In my tests, RunIQs heart-rate monitoring was on par with Apple Watch Series 2 in terms of heart-rate accuracy.Both looked pretty on-target, but chest straps like Polar's H7 usually offer the most accurate consumer-grade heart-rate sensor.

RunIQ enables you to download and play music on the watch and listen to tunes via Bluetooth connected headphones/earbuds (Android only). You can do the same with Apple Watch.

One possible advantage for RunIQ: Jabras NB PaceIQ Earbuds ($110). The wireless earbuds include a dedicated button that, when pressed, gives you on-demand workout stats, when paired with RunIQ. (I wasnt able to test this feature.)

The round RunIQ has an attractive, black case/black band masculine look. More band color options will be available in mid March. I prefer all the case color and band choices you get with Apple Watch, but its a matter of personal taste.

At least for now, any iPhone user looking for an Apple Watch alternative should hold off on buying RunIQ. There are simply too many features Apple Watch offers that RunIQ currently doesnt. For example, you cant add apps to RunIQ via your iPhone. And only Android users can take advantage of the watchs built-in Wi-Fi connectivity.

Android Wear 2.0 will bring additional features to iOS and Android users. RunIQ doesnt support Android Wear 2.0 at the moment, though an Intel spokesman said the New Balance watch will support Android Wear 2.0 this spring. (Intel developed RunIQ in partnership with New Balance.)

BWI fitness center hopes travelers sweat before they fly – CapitalGazette.com

When travelers walk by BWI airport's newest business, many of them do a double take.

It's not often you see treadmills, weights or showers in an airport.

"We get those looks a lot," said Debra Regan, general manager of ROAM Fitness. "But when they find out about us they always say, 'This is a great idea.'"

ROAM Fitness opened its first location at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport this month and is one of the few gyms located in an U.S. airport. The company hopes to convince travelers that working out at an airport and still being on time is possible.

Located in the connector between the D and E concourses after security, the gym has cardio equipment, free weights, a stretching space and private showers. Through April, prices cost $25 for a day, $150 for a month and $500 for a year.

About 20 people can workout at the gym at any given time, Regan said.

If travelers didn't pack workout gear, the gym pass includes the ability to rent Lululemon apparel and Brooks running shoes. There's also lockers to store carry-on luggage and include outlets for people to charge their electronics.

And yes, people can just use the gym's shower. An Amazon Echo, known as "Alexa," will inform users when they've reached their 15-minute shower limit.

Most of the gym's customers have come in the morning before their early flights, Regan said.

In many cities, if people want to work out during a layover, they have to take a taxi to a nearby gym, said Regan, who has worked in the fitness industry for several decades.

"I haven't seen anything as elaborate and premium as this," Regan said.

The company's biggest hurdle is not convincing people to join the gym, but finding airports that have the space, said CEO and co-founder Cynthia Sandall. Airports tend to have long leases for their businesses and finding airports that have an opening has been a challenge.

She said the company chose BWI as its first location because of the airport's recent renovations and its interest in healthy living.

BWI has designated walking trails and bike rentals for people to take a ride around the perimeter of the airport. The restaurants also started offering healthier options to travelers.

The Physicians Committee Responsible for Medicine rated BWI the best airport in the U.S. in 2014 for healthy meal options.

ROAM Fitness' goal is to open two more locations this year and about 20 locations in the next five years, Sandall said. She declined to name specific airports, but said there will be locations on both coasts.

The membership will also be valid at all of ROAM Fitness' gyms, Sandall said.

ROAM Fitness isn't targeted for a specific type of traveler, like a frequent flyer, she added. The goal is to have a gym that suits the needs of people at different workout levels.

"It's not a gym for training for the Olympics," she said. "But if you want to get rid of some kinetic energy, you can do that."

How to buy a smartwatch or fitness tracker in 2017 – CNET

If you're shopping for a piece of wearable tech in 2017, you're facing compromises. Smartwatches and fitness trackers aren't really the must-have devices many companies hoped they would be. And no, you don't really need one. But if you're looking for a piece of tech for your wrist, here are the best choices right now, followed by a list of what you need to consider.

For most people, The Apple Watch Series 1 is all you'd need. But if you want to swim or use GPS away from your phone, the Series 2 is the one to get. (And note: If you have an original Apple Watch, there's not a huge need to upgrade to the Series 2 unless you really need that swim-proofing or GPS tracking.) But the Apple Watch wins mainly because it's well hooked-in to iOS, and functions as a great wrist-remote. The Apple Watch isn't perfect by any means, but its feature set is ahead of the competition.

The decision gets harder for Android users. Android Wear is the most hooked-in platform that connects to Google's apps and services (including Google Assistant), and Android Wear 2.0 is a big improvement. But there aren't any truly great watches for Android Wear yet. LG's Watch Sport and Watch Style, the first to have the updated software, are full of limitations.

The best watch hardware isn't Android Wear at all: it's the Samsung Gear S3. Samsung's large smartwatch has deep features and decent fitness tracking modes, plus use-anywhere Samsung Pay (which requires Android). But it requires a separate set of Samsung Gear apps and syncs to Samsung S-Health for fitness. This requires more conduits and app plug-ins than you might have patience for. It's not as seamless an experience, and sometimes feels too removed from core Android functions.

If you have an Android phone and you're absolutely sold on getting a smartwatch, the Samsung Gear S3 is the best option right now, but that could change once older Android Wear watches are updated to Android Wear 2.0. We're also waiting for Fitbit, Misfit and other companies to release their smartwatches in 2017.

The smartwatches and fitness trackers we can't wait to see in 2017

A Fitbit is the right choice for most people. The whole range can track the basics like steps, distance, calories burned and sleep, and some can even measure heart rate and include guided breathing sessions.

One of the reasons we recommend Fitbit is for the app. If one of your friends owns a fitness tracker, there's a good chance it's a Fitbit -- the company has the largest user base. The benefit of this is being able to compete with friends and family members in a variety of competitions, which helps keep you motivated and more likely to reach your goal. The app also integrates a number of third-party devices and services.

A reason to skip the Fitbit would be if you're already invested in an ecosystem like Withings or Garmin. In that case, it's best to get one of their trackers.

Athletes and outdoor enthusiasts are better off with a GPS watch to accurately measure pace, distance, speed and other metrics.

All of these watches are waterproof down to at least 50 meters, include multiple sport profiles, can track daily fitness metrics like steps, sleep and heart rate, and can display notifications from an iPhone and Android phone.

Cyclists should consider a GPS bike computer for measuring distance and speed. These devices can also connect with other sensors on your bike to measure additional metrics like cadence and power.

The wearable market is getting smaller. Fitbit bought Pebble, Jawbone has pivoted away from consumer trackers, and other companies (such as Motorola) have put their smartwatch plans on hold. But there's still a wide variety of smartwatches and trackers to choose from. Here's how to find the right one.

That still matters, to a degree. The Apple Watch works with iPhones -- and only iPhones. Android phones work with Android Wear. Samsung's Gear S2 and S3 watches work with Android phones, too. Both Android Wear and Samsung watches pair with iPhones, but in a more limited way that is nowhere as good as what the Apple Watch offers. Fitness bands tend to work cross-platform, but not always.

Many premium smartwatches still have battery life of two days or less between charges. The Apple Watch, Google's Android Wear watches, and Samsung's Gear S2 and S3 are high-maintenance, and need daily or every-other-day charging. Are you ready to live with that?

If so, the Apple Watch, Samsung Gear S3 or an updated Android Wear 2.0 watch might be worth a try. Pebble's long-battery smartwatches still exist, but Pebble's sale to Fitbit and Pebble's uncertain watch future as a platform means we don't recommend current models anymore.

Most wearable bands and watches aim for fitness tracking, but some are better than others. The best pure overall fitness tracker is still the Fitbit Charge 2. Garmin also makes several good alternatives, and good running watches.

Full-featured smartwatches like the Apple Watch and Android Wear 2.0 watches can track activities and work with many third-party fitness apps, but connect mainly to Apple Health and Google Fit for synced data.

Many wearables are water resistant to at least wash-your-hands or quick-dunk-in-a-sink level, but the list of real swim-proof trackers and watches is short. You want to look for 3ATM or 5ATM, or anything that suggests meters of water resistance.

The Apple Watch Series 2, Fitbit Flex 2, Withings Steel HR, Misfit Ray, Garmin Vivoactive HR and Garmin Forerunner 235 are some of our favorite swim-friendly wearables. The Pebble 2, Pebble Time and Time Steel are swim-friendly, too. But they don't all do swim tracking.

For swim tracking, look into the Garmin Vivoactive HR, Garmin Fenix 3 HR, Garmin Forerunner 735XT, Apple Watch Series 2, Misfit Ray, Withings Steel HR and Fitbit Flex 2.

Some smartwatches come with phone service inside. The Samsung Gear S3 Frontier, LG Watch Sport and Verizon's upcoming Wear24 work with SIM cards and can function as independent phones. Samsung and LG's watches work with T-Mobile and AT&T, while Verizon's Wear24 is, well, Verizon. Phone service can be useful in case of emergency, but it drains battery life on the watch and requires an extra monthly payment (currently $5 a month on T-Mobile, $10 a month on AT&T) to use. AT&T allows phone-number syncing across devices.

Lots of smartwatches support mobile payments now. They mostly work the same way. Apple Watches have Apple Pay. Samsung's Gear S2 and S3 watches can use Samsung Pay. It adds an extra wrinkle on the S3 model with MST, a technology that works at regular credit card terminals as well as tap-to-pay ones. Android Wear 2.0-updated watches will work with Android Pay as long as the watch has NFC. Not all Android Wear watches do. Right now, in fact, the only Android Pay-enabled watch is the LG Watch Sport.

FCPS partners with Player’s Fitness and Performance – WHAG

FREDERICK, Md. - Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) have partnered with Player's Fitness and Performance in Frederick, Md. to continue a healthy environment outside the classroom.

Staff from the fitness center will help work with health and physical education teachers to develop a stronger curriculum and strength training. The facility will also provide an opportunity for FCPS staff to learn how fitness can help in the classroom and offer students an opportunity to learn about fitness.

"P.E. teachers and the athletic directors, they have a lot of things on their plate to worry about and if we can give our expertise in a very specific such as strength training and conditioning and youth fitness, then I think what we can bring can benefit them a lot, said owner and founder of Player's Fitness and Performance, Andrew Simpson.

The fitness center also awards scholarships to one male and one female student to allow them to train with the company's staff.

Commerce Fitness enjoying successful first month – Commerce Journal

Residents of Commerce have had a new place to feel the burn since Commerce Fitness opened its doors in January.

The 12,000 square foot facility is home to rows upon rows of equipment, and owners Chad and Julie Gentle are living their dream running the business.

My husband and I talked forever about opening a gym, Julie said. Its been a dream come true.

Located in Suite A at 2204 Live Oak, Commerce Fitness has had a successful run since opening on Jan. 14. Gentle said that the building seemed like the perfect location.

I was at Braums and just kind of looked out the window and noticed it, Gentle said. It seemed like it would be a great spot.

The turnaround was fast. The Gentles got the key to the building in November and opened in January. Since the opening, business has been steadily growing.

We were open for free for our entire first week, Gentle said. It got a lot of people interested and people just keep coming back.

The sleek black and grey interior and large sitting area add a very modern but friendly feel to the building, and Gentle says that they want to make a place that feels like home.

We are trying hard to make a relaxing environment, Gentle said. Its important that everyone feels welcome.

Open at all hours of the day, The gym also offers classes that are open for participation by non-members. Classes for Zumba, pilates and cardio kickboxing are currently available, with more on the way. Gentle said that there are many discounts for membership, including student, military and senior discounts. Gentle says that so far the best part about the experience of opening the gym were the stories that people had.

Hearing peoples stories has been the most rewarding part, Gentle said. It makes all of the hard work worth it.
