Stop Worrying About Whether Fitness Influencers Are on Steroids – Lifehacker

The best and the worst thing about social media is that it lets us compare ourselves to others. When it comes to athletes and fitness influencers, those comparisons can inspire us. But what happens when somebody tells you youre a fool for idolizing (fill in any name here), because theyre obviously on steroids? Does that change how you feel about their accomplishments? More importantly, does it change how you feel about yourself?
This is a social media rabbit hole you can slide down forever: watching video after video investigating whether famous people are natty or not (natty meaning natural) and arguing on Reddit about what you learned. The people who get most worked up about an influencers alleged steroid use often say theyre doing it to protect others from the harms of the drugs, and to temper beginners expectations about what is possible without drugs. I think the opposite is true: obsessing over whether others are on gear is likely to do you more harm than good. Let me explain.
If youre lifting weights with a plan of gaining either strength or visible muscleor bothyou probably want some way to gauge where you are on that journey, and what might await you in the future. Some people say you should only compare yourself to your past self, but there is such a thing as being inspired by others. Imagine telling a musician not to listen to musicians who are better than them, or telling a writer not to read good writing. I have my own personal list of athletes and influencers who inspire me, most of them women my size who lift mind-boggling weights.
Are some of them taking steroids? Maybe. Its possible. High-profile athletes get popped all the time. But on the other hand, there are plenty of people who get accused of using performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) when they havent, like Stacy Burr, a powerlifter who spoke about her drug use on the Empowered by Iron podcast. She says she was constantly accused of using PEDs for years before she ever decided to start taking them.
Or, for a historical example, look at people like Eugen Sandow and Miriam Vulcana Williams, who had strong(wo)man careers at a time when steroids did not exist as a performance-enhancing drug. People with that same amount of muscle (or less!) routinely get accused of drug use in natty-or-not discussions online.
G/O Media may get a commission
Lets forget about muscly influencers for a minute, and look at the influencers who make video after video (or encourage discussion after discussion) about whether such-and-such person is on gear or not. Its important to know that these accusations are hugely popular content and they are created as content. If you click and/or argue, youre part of somebody elses moneymaking scheme. These videos dont exist to educate you, they exist because its a thing people like to yell about on the internet.
Its true that plenty of athletes and fitness models are on PEDs. But its not like you can know just by looking. If it were, the World Anti-Doping Agency would get rid of the urine tests and just hire a bunch of YouTubers with expert eyeballs to look at athletes and declare whether theyre doping or not.
What really happens, in the making of this content, is that the natty-or-not crowd will look at anybody with an above-average physique or results and declare that person must be on steroids. Some of the things that will get you a chorus of steroid accusations on the internet:
It quickly becomes an echo chamber with zero relationship to reality. An influencer only has to say (or hint) that somebody is on gear and that they believe this because of X observation, for their followers to parrot the line amongst themselves. Its not like theyre guessing who is on gear and then having the answer revealed, and admitting who is and who is not; its just a constant stream of accusations as the influencer and their followers become more and more convinced of the truth of rumors they themselves made up.
There are influencers and athletes who are on gear and who talk about it openly, but many of them are in countries other than the U.S., due to our drug laws. Its a catch-22 if someone is not on gear, though: They either deny it and are seen as doubling down, or they ignore the accusation and are seen as guilty for their lack of response.
Okay, so youll never know for sure if your favorite athlete or influencer uses steroids (unless they come out and tell you), and its not exactly a secret that many of them are using. So whats the harm in speculating?
Heres the thing: Its true that steroids help you to grow more muscle, but there are plenty of athletes who are able to grow a lot of muscle without drugs. Anyone at the top of their sport is likely to have good genetics and a long training history, whether they add to that with steroids or not. (For a realistic look at how much strength and muscle a person can really gain with steroids, theres a science-based breakdown here.) Its like pointing out that a basketball player is tall when shes wearing high heels. So what? If she took off the heels, shed still be tall, and shed still be better at basketball than the rest of us.
The real end game of the natty-or-not obsession is not obtaining a realistic sense of expectations, shrugging, and walking into the gym to focus on yourself. No, it leads to further warping your own expectations of what is possible. Maybe this is just me spending too much time on Reddit, but I feel like theres a pretty strong correlation between the people who care the most about calling out fake natties are the people who have the least experience in the gym (and pretty weak lifts).
A few steps of telephone away, you find the people who heard from somebody who heard from somebody that most influencers and celebrities are on steroids. They say that you need gear to look like Brad Pitt in Fight Club, or Lean Beef Patty. They do look amazing, I agree, but neither has an amount of muscle that would require steroids to achieve. If you have grown conditioned to look at somebody with a moderate amount of muscle and feel dejectedlike you cant possibly achieve that size without steroids, so you might as well give upI would argue yours are the truly unrealistic expectations.

Jared Gordon Fights His Addiction With Purpose – Muscle & Fitness
Jared Gordon, aka Flash, is scheduled to face Leonardo Santos this Saturday at UFC 278, but whether he is victorious on the night, or not, hes finally winning at life.
The UFC lightweights world went into a tailspin at 19 years of age when, battling mental and physical pain, the MMA star became addicted to heroin. Regular drug misuse, and overdose, would plague the fighter until he fully committed to turning his life around in 2015. Its a cautionary tale that Gordon takes ownership of, and he hopes to use those troubled experiences to lift himself and others who may be facing similar demons.
The 33-year-old talks exclusively to M&F about his darkest moments and the important factors that have helped to turn his life around.
As we sit down for this Q&A, Jared Gordon has been in the news again. This time the headlines were generated by an Instagram post that Flash made on August 8, appearing to show an altercation where the former Lightweight and Featherweight Champion had to subdue a man attempting to attack him with a baseball bat. This seems like as good a place as any to begin our chat.
A lot of people on social media seemed surprised that you showed great self-control when restraining your attacker. What went down there?
No one got hurt. [If] you start hitting people, youll probably get involved with the police. I was on vacation in Chicago. I was with my parents who are in their 60s, and I was with my cousin and her husband, and I wasnt about to start beating someones face in, in front of them. (laughs)
He was at a pull-through ATM machine, and on his bumper sticker it said I love crack wh**res, so I saw the bumper sticker and I thought it was funny, so I took a picture of it and he got out of his car and went into his trunk and Im thinking: what if this guy pulls out a gun or like a machete or something, but he pulled out a bat and that was that.
He picked the wrong guy to front up to, thats for sure! Of course, you were already a highly experienced competitor before joining the Kill Cliff Fight Club (formerly Sanford MMA) in 2019, but what has that move been like for you?
Ive known Henry Hooft, the head coach, for quite some time, since I was in my early 20s, so I circled back to him in 2019 and its just more like my style at [this] gym. The wrestling, the way that they hold their practices, the push that we get every day, everyone is good there. The level of training partners is really high. Im learning a lot, Im still learning every day and its just a really good fit for me, so thats why I ended up back down here.
How is life in your 30s different from life in your 20s?
I actually feel better now than I ever did. Also, when I was in my 20s I was a raging drug addict, so that didnt help. But I feel stronger, and more spiritually fit than I ever did. I think Im the best version of Jared Gordon than Ive ever been.
Now that you have turned your life around, do you feel like your toughest opponent was actually yourself?
My worst enemy was always me. I always self-sabotaged. Any time that I took the steering wheel or did what I wanted to do Jareds way, I crashed and burned. Im married now when my relationship is healthy with her, everything else is much better, so it takes a lot of work and if Im not mentally fit, and I dont love myself, how could I love anyone else and give them the attention that they need?
Your wife Christina has obviously been a great support to you. We also thank you for the work that you do, to try and reach out to others who may be going through their own mental health struggles.
One of my best friends took his own life a little over a year ago and I had no idea that he was hurting so much. He would talk to me like everything was ok, and thats my goal now, to use my platform to help other people. I was an I.V. heroin, cocaine addict. I couldnt keep a needle out of my arm for years. Its not about me anymore. Its about everyone else that is sick and suffering, that needs help. You know, Im a sexual assault victim, Ive tried killing myself and I was a terrible drug addict so if I can help people, thats my goal now. Sometimes I feel like a broken record but I know that this is what my mission is. Thats what God wants me to do, is to help others. I need to win, to have that platform.
You are definitely not a broken record. You only have to reach one person who needs to hear your story and it could make all the difference in the world. Support systems are so important and another person that has been a positive influence in your own life is Jason Strout . How would you describe the bond that you guys have?
I met Jason Strout when I was like 23, back in New York City and he saw me go through it all. I would show up to the gym with track marks on my arms. He never stopped trying to help me. So, hes like my older brother now. Hes cornered me in close to 20 professional fights. Hes made me the fighter that I am now, and I owe him so much. He gave me what I needed to hear and it would give me a lot of motivation and drive to better myself. Jason is a huge part of my network. And I have so many other people. I have a sports psychologist, I go to a therapist; a trauma specialist. I have my family, my wife my parents have been the backbone of my life. I would one hundred percent be dead right now or in prison [without that support].
Well, thank goodness you had that support. And there will be people watching your fights that are in similar situations, wondering if they can make positive changes. What would you say to those people?
I would say that if I can do it, you can definitely do it, too. I wasnt just like smoking pot and drinking a couple of beers here and there. I was panhandling, I was homeless. I was a real drug addict to the core, you know? I was in and out. I just didnt [quit drugs] in one shot. I was in and out of treatment centers, psyche wards, homeless shelters, therapeutic communities jails. It wasnt east for me. It took me years. So, I would say you need to find a purpose, find your higher power whatever it is, it could be anything if you have children, or a sick parent that needs your help, you could use that as your bigger reasoning. You gotta get professional help and it can be done. Ive seen people come back basically from the dead and live a beautiful life.
When did you realize that you had to make changes for yourself?
I had my last overdose on Christmas Eve, 2015. I had been living on the street. For 4 or 5 months I was really hitting it hard, and you know, when I woke up in the hospital on the 26th of December Id just had enough. I was just sick of doing what I was doing and I checked myself into a detox, and I just started listening to people that had been though what I had been though, and they told me what I needed to do and I said alright, Ill do it. I gave it a shot and then slowly things started coming back to me. I started getting healthier again. I got back in the gym, I continued doing the things that they told me to do and then I got into UFC a year later and I recently bought my first house. I have the trust of my friends and family again, which is priceless. I want to help other people, which is also priceless. I literally had nothing and now I have everything that I need. Staying in the moment is the only thing that matters. Right now, what can I do to make my chances at surviving, and being a better person, higher? Thats where Im at now. I have to work at my life every day.
Do you use any of the Kill Cliff products?
The CBD drinks, we drink them. We have them in the gym, stocked up all the time. The Joe Rogan flavor (the Flaming Joe), the pineapple is one of my favorites. They are really, super clean with lots of vitamins and nutrients that we need, to recover to stay fueled through the day. Kill Cliff has got a good thing going, for sure.
Youve had some issues with making weight at 145 pounds. Now that you have moved up to 155 pounds does this remove some of the pre-fight stress? Do you have to train differently for heavier opponents?
Its not necessarily that they are stronger, but [maybe a] longer [reach], or taller. So, I definitely had to make some adjustments. But theres a lot of guys in that division that are my height. What Ive learned is, its not necessarily about being bigger and stronger, but just being better and more technical.
Making weight now is a lot easier than it was at 145. I feel stronger, healthier, and Im not so focused on the diet and cutting the water weight. So, I get more out of my training sessions and I can focus more on technique, instead of like Oh, I need to lose weight which is very stressful, you know? Im not 22-years-old any more. Im 33 now, so its harder and harder to cut weight, especially if you are cutting a lot. So, Im healthier, Im fitter. Less injuries. Better for me in general.
Do you have any preferred methods of recovery?
I do a lot of ice baths, and I do a lot of saunas. I also use Epson salt baths. But I also do a lot of breathing stuff. Meditation and [controlled] breathing really brings me down to a restorative, regenerative state. I get the most gains when Im training really hard and then I focus on my recoveries. I do [meditation] in the morning, early afternoon and then night time. I wont look at social media before noon I live in Florida so I just go in my back yard and Im in the hot sun. I think its really important when you first wake up to get that vitamin D, drink some water and get going for the day.
Yours is such an inspiring journey and we wish you continued success! Speaking of right now, you are still training hard and doing these fight camps and sweating it out. After all these years and the ups and downs, do you still enjoy the process?
Oh, I love it. So, martial arts is my passion. I love competition, I love challenging myself. Even though fighting will never give me fulfilment, just like the shiny stuff, its my passion; learning and then also being of service to other people in the gym like younger guys, my teammates; if they need my Im there for them. Its a brotherhood and thats why I love it. I dont get sick of it. Sometimes, I get like oh my gosh, Ive got to train again but Im so used to it. I love the grind.

Cincinnati (AFP) Andy Murray said match fitness will be the key to the remainder of his season after reaching the second round of the ATP/WTA Cincinnati Masters on Monday.
The two-time champion at the US Open run-up event reached the second round with a gruelling 7-6 (7/3), 5-7, 7-5 win over fellow veteran Stan Wawrinka.
After half a decade of injury problems including a pair of hip surgeries, the Scot knows the remainder of his season, and career, will depend on his physical state.
"Physically I felt pretty good for the last few months, but in a lot of the tournaments I've lost in the second round," he said.
"I've not had that opportunity to have a really good tournament and then maybe take a break and rest.
"I hope I can get to that level again where I'm consistently getting to the latter stages of events, and therefore, we will be able to plan and schedule my tournaments better."
The three-time Grand Slam champion was tested to his limit over almost three hours against Wawrinka, like himself still recovering fully from long term problems (foot, knee).
"There have been some good moments this year, but it's not been easy these last few years to stay fit and healthy and play enough tennis to build confidence, get robust enough to compete week in, week out," Murray said.
"It's positive that I got to play more matches this year. Hopefully I can continue that through the end of the season."
Murray's comeback effort this season has included finals at Sydney in January and on grass in Stuttgart two months ago.

MSU institute promotes love for fitness and works to reduce "professionalization" of youth sports – WKAR
Dan Gould has recently retired as director of the institute. Hes a professor of kinesiology and the emeritus Gwendolyn Norrell Professor of Youth Sport and Student-Athlete Well-Being. Karin Pfeiffer is also a professor of kinesiology and is assuming the role of director from Dan.
Gould talks about the institute being born out of the state legislature in 1978.
The Institute for the Study of Youth Sports was started by the state legislature, says Gould. Our mission is to scientifically study sport for children and youth and then to disseminate that information to the larger sporting public to make sports better for kids.
Pfeiffer is an exercise physiologist.
My research has focused on two major lines, Pfeiffer says. One is how we assess how physically active people are, and the other is interventions to increase physical activity. Most of my work has been done with children and adolescents.
A lot of my research is in the area of sports psychology and the psychology of coaching, Gould continues. I have done a lot of programmatic work on what makes an effective coach. We've really focused on life skills like psychosocial skills and characteristics like teamwork, goal setting, and work ethic that kids can learn through sport and then hopefully - they're called life skills - transfer those skills to other aspects of their life. I was a wrestler through high school and college, and I learned to work hard. Did that transfer to other avenues like being a professor?
What are some of the key and current topics that the institute grapples with?
One is the equity issue, says Gould. There are really two youth sports in America. There's the middle-class youth sports where the kids go to sports camps or they're on travel teams and pay for play, and then there's either rural kids or urban kids who have fewer opportunities. How do we bridge that divide? That's one. How do we further increase quality coaching? I think that's a big one that we want to work on going forward. Youth sports has become very professionalized. Ninety percent of kids are never going to play in college. How do we have them fall in love with physical activity?
Even though we could view sports as a means to achieve physical activity recommendations, we don't always have the best-case scenario in terms of what's happening at practice, Pfeiffer says. And I think we have a couple of issues going on where parents are dropping children off at practice thinking, Okay, they're going to get a lot of physical activity during this time, and most people would think Yep, that's what's going to happen. But in the end, if you examine what's occurring during some of these practices, there's a fair amount of standing around.
We've lost that notion of free play, which is also a very important element of development. And I think the other is just what is happening in these practices, not just with are they getting enough physical activity while they're there. But then the skill development piece of that as well, and are they really getting the skills they need to develop fully as an athlete? Whatever happened to intramural sports? Why is it that we have to be the cream of the crop or you just drop out of sport? Why can't we have this whole piece of sports for fun? Maybe you're not the best one out there but you just want to play. People often fall out of love with sport after they don't make an elite team, and that's not how it should be. Everybody should be playing for fun. Fun is the reason why people do a lot of things, including physical activity including sports.
Whats your advice for parents and coaches?
We know people do things because it's fun, says Gould. And people do things when they feel competent. If you don't feel competent, you're highly likely to drop out. Now, competent doesn't mean that I play on the MSU football team. Competence means I swam today for fitness. Well, I can swim. I can do the strokes. If you couldn't do that, it's not going to be very much fun. We want to create an enjoyable atmosphere of fun, but it's not just an unorganized rolling out of the ball and laughing. We're also teaching kids fundamental skills.
How do we develop kids competence relative to their own abilities so they can go out and have fun doing it? And then also it's not just the physical side. It's a coach who's having fun and being supportive and encouraging.
I think sometimes what happens, not necessarily in the older age groups but in some of the younger age groups, you just have a parent who, thank goodness, does volunteer but doesn't necessarily have a whole lot of background in coaching, Pfeiffer continues. And that's okay, but it would be great if we can help that parent a little bit by teaching them some of these kinds of characteristics of having fun and developing skills.
It doesn't have to be really complicated if you're a parent or a youth coach, Gould says. There's something called self-determination theory. All people and all kids have three basic needs. One is relatedness; you want to belong to something. Another is competence; you want to feel like you're getting better. And the other is autonomy or choice. Id like to get every coach to go to a practice and say, What did I do today to make the kids have better relatedness? What can I do to increase competence by having each kid set a goal? What can I do for autonomy?
Our colleague Jim Pivarnik studied exercise in pregnancy, and I always remember some of the research his students did that showed that physically active pregnant women have kids who are more physically active later in life. Be physically active with your kids. Have some balls in the backyard or a little swimming pool. Do things with your kids outdoors. Buy balls and bats and your kids will more likely develop these skills if they have an environment that breeds that.
There is a lot of optimism just with the interest in sport and how many people are into it and want to participate, and I think that's good, and I think we can foster that even better than what we do now, Pfeiffer adds. Mental health has really risen to the top as an important issue for us to address. Safety always needs to be at the top of our minds. We need to pull ourselves back from this almost professionalization of youth sport. We need a little bit of a reset in terms of that. I don't know how we're going to do it, but we need to.
As I retire, I'm excited about how much more we know, says Gould. I was going through some old materials when I cleaned my office and there were hardly any books. Now, there's so much information coming out that we know a lot more about how to help people in these endeavors than we did when we started out; that's a real positive.
Concerns? The U.S. has fallen behind other countries in the world because we have no government agency that looks after sport - a research dissemination system to get parents information funded by the government. Here, we have to backdoor it through other agencies. Now, that's my concern. The good thing is Health and Human Services, Karin's been involved in some of this, are trying to get more involved and do some things.
The Safe Sport Act is a good example. The government passed that but didn't fund it enough so they can't keep up with all the cases. I'm not a huge fan of big government, but at the same time, our government probably needs to get involved. We need a policy on youth in general and on youth sport. To me, there's opportunity there. But it's a concern.
The quality of coaching is so important. You dont gain all the life skills sports can teach from just being in sports. You catch it from having a really good coach who is intentional about what she's teaching and talks about teamwork and then talks about how that would transfer to the classroom or work environment.

Several Welcome Week 2022 events will take place at and around the Student Recreation Center, affecting access and operations. WVU Campus Recreation will offer several alternatives to its members during this period.
The Downtown Fitness Center at Reynolds Hall will be open starting Sunday (Aug. 14). Hours for the facility are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.Sunday and 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Additionally, the Mylan Park Aquatic & Track Complex is available to current WVU Campus Recreation members. The facility is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.Sunday and from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday. To access Mylan Park, bring your ID card.If you use the virtual WVUGO app, please bring a license or other form of ID.
While the Student Recreation Center will be open, please keep in mind the following closures:

The Student Recreation Center will open at noon.
The pool will be closed all day.
