Refinery29
Howdy, folks! Im Chinazor Offor, aka Chichi, the new associate writer on Refinery29's Shopping team. My specialty is plus-size style (all my thick gals, stand up!) Im passionate about fashion inclusivity, or lack thereof, and helping my fellow chunky cuties access the wild world of trends we're so often excluded from. As far as my personal style goes, its evolved over the years; Ive experimented with emo-girl prep, teen-mag chic, wannabe hipster, edgy-college core, and so forth. Now, at the ripe age of 25, I cant really say that Ive landed on any vibe in particular (I blame ADHD for that). What I have learned is how to zero in on the hidden gems sprinkled around the internet that cater to large bodies. My mind is always in a million places and so is my closet but, I do have my tried-and-true staples which I've lined up ahead. These pieces are my go-to's that I've worn into the ground, they're the ones I reach for when my brain is all mushy, and (most importantly) they make me feel put together. And now I'm sharing them with you, my new R29 fam. Jump to these when thinking hurts! At Refinery29, were here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. Plus-size Instagram made me do it, and Ive never looked back. Denim is especially tough for those of us with large booties and thighs. As Beyonce beautifully puts it, If you don't jump to put jeans on, baby, you don't feel my pain. I almost gave up on the idea of owning a mom jean cut denim because there weren't many plus options available, but these babies changed that; they're high-waisted and actually comfortable, plus they make me feel like an all-American cutie.Shop American EagleAmerican Eagle Outfitters AE Stretch Curvy Mom Jean, $, available at American Eagle OutfittersEloquii Bow Back Organza BlouseCloset Staple: Statement Blouse If you are like me, then you often imagine you are the lead character in a drama about your life. Watch This Bodybuilder Take on the U.S. Navys Intense New Fitness Test – menshealth.com
Following on from his last military fitness test fail, bodybuilder and trainer Steve Cook sets out to redeem himself in his latest video by taking on the U.S. Navy's Physical Readiness Test once again. Back in fighting shape after recovering from COVID, this time Cook is trying out the new version of the test, due to be rolled out in March, which switches out the traditional curl-ups for a forearm plank in order to better evaluate core strength.
"I really like the fact that they looked at it and thought, that full situp isn't a great indicator of how strong your abs are," says Cook. "Also, all that spinal flexion really isn't good for the lower back."
The first round of the test is two minutes of pushups, and Cook comes strong out of the gate; the maximum score for any age group in the test is 92 pushups, and he churns out 100 reps with a couple of seconds to spare. "I feel good about that," he says.
After three minutes' rest, the second test is the plank, which Cook has to hold for 3:25 to get the best score for his age group, while maintaining a 90-degree elbow position and a flat back, and not letting his head drop. "I've never done a plank for this long," he says. "A minute, maybe a minute and a half; 3 minutes is intense."
He ends up maxing out at around the 3:25 mark. "I definitely felt that in the hip flexors, transverse abs, everything, even shoulders still" he says. "That's why we do the plank after the pushups, because you need the stabilizing muscles for pushups, but doing the plank right after that... Maybe should have rested."
This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.
For the final round, Cook opts for a 2,000-meter row over a 1.5-mile run, aiming for a time of 7:20 to keep his perfect score going. He over-performs on this event too, hitting 2,000 meters in 7:14. "Much better rowing than running a mile and a half... but it still sucked," he says. "That was a doozy. That absolutely kicked my butt."

If you need a solid smartwatch but arent willing to shell out hundreds of dollars for something like an Apple Watch or a Fitbit Sense, head over to Amazon today. The online retailer is selling the Garmin Vivoactive 3 for $99Remove non-product link, matching an all-time low price that we also saw around the holidays last year. The watch usually costs around $130, and it debuted at $230.
The Vivoactive 3 is a popular choice among fitness enthusiasts who want a focused wearable, since it offers a reliable GPS feature and good activity trackers. It also includes a heart rate monitor, of course, and stress tracking as well.
The Garmin Vivoactive 3 can also display smartphone app notifications with Android phones. It lacks a music component for those long runs however; integration with Spotify is reserved for a special music edition of the smartwatch.
The watch supports NFC for Garmin Pay contactless payments, which works most places that accept contactless payments in the U.S. As for the physical attributes of the watch, it has a 1.2-inch diameter display, up to 7 days of battery life when connected to a smartphone, and 13 days without.
Bottom line? The Garmin Vivoactive 3 a nice little smartwatch that focuses strongly on fitness, but it doesnt have some of the more advanced features weve seen in other (higher-cost) devices like the Apple Watch. If youre looking for more of a fitness tracker that doubles as a basic smartwatch, though, its definitely worth consideringespecially at todays steep sale price.

This College Gymnast Pushed the Limits of Your Average Floor Routine and Earned a Perfect 10! – POPSUGAR
After a season cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, I'm beyond overjoyed every time I watch college gymnastics in 2021. There are truly no limits to the creativity and talents of these athletes, as evidenced by Trinity Thomas's floor routine. The University of Florida gymnast recently competed against LSU on Feb. 12 and walked away from the mat with a perfect 10.
Flawless routines aren't anything new to Thomas, who earned plenty of 10s last year. This season, however, she challenged herself even further with unbelievable feats like an over-the-shoulder split and a casual double layout. Thomas is the fourth NCAA gymnast to reach this sought-after high score in 2021, and the second athlete to achieve it on floor following Kiya Johnson's performance back in January. We can't wait to see what Thomas achieves over the rest of the season and beyond as she sets her sights on the Olympics.

Between Amens What is your level of spiritual fitness? – The Record
Dr. Karen Shadle
Like approximately 80 million other Americans, I set some fitness goals for the new year. And like about 79 million of them, I would like to give up. Recently I came across a blog post about the cold, hard truths of exercise that helped explain my mediocre progress so far. Experts say that for exercise to be truly effective in changing your body, it has to be hard. Like uncomfortably hard.
Easy, low-intensity exercise brings many benefits, such as improved mood and better sleep. However, research suggests that if you want to achieve measurable biometric change losing weight, building muscle, lowering blood pressure, rehabilitating an injury, or improving a triathlon time an easy stroll wont do it.
Whatever your starting fitness level, you have to do the difficult things to get results. Furthermore, over time, that which was once hard will become easy and thus less effective at producing change. Simply put, you have to get sweaty and out of breath.
This is unwelcome news for me, a self-smug daily jogger. I have an early-morning exercise routine that I enjoy. It makes me feel productive and healthy. But its pretty easy for me, so I have unsurprisingly made little progress toward my 2021 fitness goals.
So too, Im afraid, with the spiritual life. Im not aware of any research to back this up, but I suspect it is quite easy for Christians with a healthy spiritual routine to become complacent and stall their spiritual growth. We need to take up some hard things. Maybe its a difficult conversation with a loved one, or a visit to the confessional, or putting ones faith into action through advocacy. Whatever your level of spiritual fitness, what do you need to do to change your heart?
Lent seems to come at the perfect time every year, just as new years resolutions are losing steam. Ash Wednesday is an opportunity to recommit to growth, both physical and spiritual.
For Catholics, Lent is a decidedly carnal season. Many use Lent as a time to give up something enjoyable, such as sweets, social media or soda. The church teaches that God wants us to experience pleasure. The delights of this world a comfy couch, a rich dessert, a video game, a glass of wine are good. In excess, however, their goodness can become distorted and they prevent us from a right relationship with God and others.
Ive sometimes heard spiritual leaders suggest an additive approach to Lent that seeks to develop virtues instead of fasting from pleasures. Call a friend, do acts of kindness, or spend time meditating. Those arent bad ideas, but I dont want to overlook the importance of physical sacrifice.
Our faith is incarnational, sensory and bodily. The practices of fasting and giving up other physical pleasures is commendable. Sweating out a tough workout will, over time, change your body. Practicing self-denial will, over 40 days, tame the spirit. Physical sacrifices have the power to focus our attention on God. They also sharpen our appreciation for pleasure. After fasting, feasting carries new meaning.
Ours is a faith for the senses. Its why we have ashes and incense, bread and wine. Catholics, if you want to change, put in the difficult work. This Lent, lets work up a spiritual sweat and perhaps a physical one too.
Dr. Karen Shadle is the director of the Archdiocese of Louisville Office of Worship.

Its hard to think about tank tops and swimsuits when there is still snow on the ground, but summer bodies are made in the winter. If you dont feel comfortable going to a gym during a pandemic, there are still plenty of ways to get yourself feeling good.
You can now choose from many online and streaming workouts. Many of the programs dont even require equipment. However, you might benefit from buying a jump rope, yoga mat or weights.
On-Demand Classes
If you dont mind paying a membership, you can check out Beachbody on Demand. It has more than 1,500 programs and classes you can pull up right on your TV. It costs about $40 for three months, and its something you can do in your own living room and on your own schedule.
Many women took barre, yoga and Zumba classes at the gym before the pandemic. Now, in addition to subscription services like Beachbody, you can stream hundreds of free classes on YouTube and on Prime Video if youre a member of Amazon Prime.
Workout Connections
Do you thrive off the camaraderie of being around other determined women during your workout? If working out alone and listening to a recorded instructor doesnt motivate you, then check out Fit4Mom.
Fit4Mom offers pre- and-postnatal fitness programs in person and virtually. For example, you can join Stroller Barre, a cardio and strength interval class or Body Well, an eight-week program which includes small group fitness coaching and nutritional guidance. You can workout from home but still be with women from across Northeast Ohio.
Lyndsey Stephan is a mother of two, group fitness instructor and owner of the Cuyahoga Falls/Stow/Kent Fit4Mom branch. She says working out with other women is beneficial.
It helps with support, accountability and creating new friendships, especially in a time where people need each other more than ever, she says. In a time where we feel so isolated and alone, it is nice to be able to virtually see the moms in my village, she says.
No matter how you work out, Stephan says its important to change up your exercise routine.
You dont want to continuously work the same exact muscles every workout, she says. That will lead to muscle fatigue, which could eventually result in injury.
Stephan recommends that the average adult get 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week.
Regular exercise isnt only good for your physical health but also has a positive impact on your mental well-being, which helps fight depression and anxiety and reduces stress levels, improves sleep and boosts your mood.
Dont like working out virtually? No problem. Stephan says you can get in a great workout other ways.
It can be as easy as going for a 30 minute power walk, jog or run, she says.
Kids Join in
Only have time to work out when your child is with you? Try a program that incorporates your child in the exercises, such as Stroller Strides.
Stroller Strides is a functional, total-body conditioning workout designed for moms with kids in tow, says Sarah Andrecheck, the Fit4Mom owner and instructor in Beachwood/Shaker Heights. No more mama guilt. This class is all about self-care in a supportive and encouraging environment.
Have a Peloton account? Check out the virtual family classes they have available. You can find five- to 20-minute classes geared toward the entire family.
There are also a lot of free options on YouTube or Amazon. Just search for family workouts.
You must take care of yourselves in order to take the best care of your kiddos, Andrecheck says. You cant pour from an empty cup.
Whether you want to drop a couple pounds or just want to feel healthier, remember there are plenty of options out there. Do something today that your future self will be grateful for tomorrow.

The large hole left inside the Milledgeville Mall by clothing retailer JCPenney is soon to be filled.
Planet Fitness, a gym chain with locations all across North America, is slated to open in the second quarter of this year, according to Scott Breault, VP of marketing for Planet Fitness Southeast.

We had been actively seeking an opportunity to bring our Judgement Free Zone to Milledgeville for some time, Breault said in an email to The Union-Recorder. Through a tremendous effort during the pandemic, we are building out this 20,930 square foot club and we are excited to finally serve the community once we open.
Memberships to the gym start at $10 per month, and Planet Fitness is currently offering a pre-opening special rate of $19.99 for its black card membership that comes with extra perks like bringing a friend for free anytime and use of any club across the country. The special membership also gives access to the gyms black card spa that features hydromassage.
Our intent is to provide a place for local residents to improve both their physical and mental wellness, added Breault. Our spacious layout and enhanced cleaning policies will allow the community to gym confidently knowing that their health and safety are always our top priority.
The incoming Planet Fitness plans on hiring between 10 and 12 employees initially. Prospects are invited to apply online at jobs.jobvite.com/planetfitness, or send an email with resume to the companys recruiting team at recruit@pfsoutheast.com.
