Fitness Trail: Think about the exercise and body position – Sky Hi News

When choosing an exercise for your program one of the most important components is to determine what the bodys position will be during the exercise.

For example, if you intend to train your pectoral muscles with dumbbells or a barbell, where your body is positioned in space and time is critical. This is due to the fact that you must be opposite of gravity to effectively train the pectoral muscles with free weights. The pectoral muscles must be opposite of gravity (i.e. body position is supine chest facing the ceiling) in order to overload the muscle group. Consequently, you will not be able to effectively train the pectorals with free weights in a standing position as this will load up the deltoids far more than the pectoral muscles.

Now, if you are training with resistive tubing, TRX Suspension System or RIP Trainer, your body position, in terms of the relationship with gravity will vary. You may train the pectoral muscles very effectively in a standing position with resistive tubing because the resistance tubing is pulling against you. However, the bodys position in this case will need to be facing away from the anchor point of the tubing, TRX Suspension System or RIP Trainer so that you are pushing load away from the anchor point thereby engaging the pectoral muscles effectively.

Below are four tips on how to determine what your body position must be in order to effectively train specific muscle groups. Prior to beginning any exercise program, consult your physician.

No. 1 Determine the location of the muscle or muscle group. Is the muscle group anterior, posterior, lateral or medial? Is the muscle group an upper body or lower body muscle group? In the example above of the pectorals, this is an anterior muscle group that is responsible for performing pushing movements. Consider how you would push a load effectively with the pectorals.

No. 2 Consequently, if training the pectoral muscles, you will need to lie supine when training with free weights, face away from anchor points when training with resistive tubing, TRX Suspension System, RIP Trainer or cable/pulley systems.

No. 3 When training with the TRX Suspension System, body weight is the load that you are displacing. Consequently, in the example of training the pectoral muscles, you would face away from your anchor point and the closer to the floor your bodys weight is positioned the more challenge will be placed upon the pectoral muscles. If you are training the latissimus dorsi (i.e., the wide part of the back), you want to face your anchor point and, the closer your position is in relationship to the floor, the more load will be placed upon the lats.

No. 4 Determine the correct and most effective line of pull for each exercise. Thinking back to tip 3, the more direct the line of pull is established, the more load is placed upon the muscle or muscle group, thereby eliciting a greater amount of work. Therefore, if you are attempting to strengthen your lats, performing an inverted row with the TRX Suspension System, you would want to position your sternum directly underneath the anchor point above you.

Jrgen Klopp on Sadio Mane fitness and changes v West Ham – Liverpool FC

Jrgen Klopp has provided more details on Sadio Mane's absence for Sunday's Premier League meeting with West Ham United.

The forward was not part of the squad at London Stadium as a result of a minor muscle injury sustained during the midweek win over Tottenham Hotspur.

It happened in the game against Tottenham a couple of days ago, the boss told Sky Sports. Nothing too serious but serious enough to not be involved today.

Roberto Firmino dropped to the bench for the game against the Hammers, with Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri joining Mohamed Salah in attack.

Thats [so] something like this doesnt happen again, [like] with Sadio, added Klopp.

Its less than 72 hours we play [again] nobody wants to hear it, but its like this. We have to try to make sure the boys could recover as good as possible.

Thats it, pretty much. Thats the only reason Bobby is fine.

VCs Share What It’s Like To Test Out Fitness Apps Before They Invest – Crunchbase News

Sometimes the best way to know something works is by trying it out yourself.

Subscribe to the Crunchbase Daily

Health and fitness-related goals are commonly a New Years resolution for many consumers, so we decided it was worth asking five venture capitalists who invest in fitness apps and platforms, how they go about evaluating potential investments. Some of them tried out a few apps or products, while others tried out as many as they could get their hands on, as they decided what to invest in and what to pass on.

When it comes to fitness apps and platforms, whats more certain is there is big money to be had in the sector, in part due to the global pandemic keeping everyone at home for much of 2020. Not only did home become a workplace, it also became a gym.

Investors pumped $7.3 billion into just over 730 U.S.-based fitness apps and platforms in the past five years, with $2.4 billion coming just in 2020, according to known funding rounds within the Crunchbase database.

Tim Chang, a partner at Mayfield Fund, 1 was a seed investor in Tonal, a smart home gym that uses artificial intelligence and coaching to provide strength training, in 2015. He has been involved in health tracking, training and nutrition for the past 20 years, and his particular interest was in weight lifting.

I tried all of the devices and every machine even building out a home gym, Chang said in an interview. Tonal was wonderful and became a huge part of my identity. When Tonal came along, I understood it because it was where personal passion fits where you invest, but initially, no VC wanted to touch it. Silicon Valley looks down on strength training. They think it is for meat heads, and only want to focus on distance sports without sophisticated equipment.

Tonal did go on to raise $200 million in known funding since it was founded in 2015, according to Crunchbase data. It was something that Chang knew would eventually happen.

Its gratifying to see the market catch up to what Ive always known, he added.

An early investor in Peloton, Elizabeth Edwards, founder and general partner of H Venture Partners, was able to look at the manufacturing prototype for the app-connected stationary bike. This was prelaunch, and there werent any classes to sell yet, but Edwards saw the products potential.

What sold us was the quality of the bike, the plans and the type of content they were looking to do, she said in an interview. It was taking that SoulCycle experience and bringing it into your home. I was familiar with the type of content, doing yoga for the past 15 years.

While she likes the bicycle part, Edwards leaves that to her husband and is much more into Pelotons streaming yoga content, which she exercises alongside frequently. She also hopes Peloton will come out with an elliptical product.

Peloton, now a public company, went on to raise a total of $994.7 million in known funding, according to Crunchbase data.

Spark Capital founder and Partner Todd Dagres recalls trying out Mirror, a connected fitness platform that streams classes via a mirror-like screen, after the company first got started in 2016. It was a unique experience, not only because he could touch and try it, but he could feel the results.

We were able to demo a prototype, and that helped a lot, Dagres told Crunchbase News. We were sold on Mirror when we saw how different and unique it was, and we also felt it was an opportunity to be a leader in emerging categories.

Spark went on to lead both Mirrors $13 million Series A and $25 million Series B in 2018. Mirror was later acquired by Lululemon for $500 million in June 2020.

Dagres himself then co-founded a connected fitness platform, Liteboxer, that provides a boxing experience with music and training. The company raised $4 million in seed funding in 2020 led by Will Ventures.

There are two things to know about Kyle Lui: One, he is a big product guy you name the fitness app or platform, and he has probably tried it. Two, he thinks that asking someone what is your at-home fitness set-up is a common question in 2020, but definitely was not in 2019.

I try them all, the DCM Ventures partner said in an interview. Im passionate about the space and am looking for the next compelling product.

Lui said there is a lot of room in the fitness space, and while a product might speak to him, he knows it doesnt necessarily speak to others. Some of the products and services hes tried had a good brand and marketing, but lacked true uniqueness. He also thinks some of the pure digital experiences those with one-way interactions wouldnt be able to keep consumers attention long-term, he added.

He was most recently involved in Tempos $60 million Series B. Tempo is a home fitness platform that combines equipment, training guidance and social motivation with 3D sensors and artificial intelligence. DCM led the companys $17 million Series A round in 2019.

We had a good sense of what we were looking for in Tempo, and the first time we tried it, we had a wow experience, Lui said.

Mark Wan is another VC who has tried many fitness apps and platforms along the way to investing in some of them. Causeway Media Partners, where Wan is managing partner, focuses on later-stage sports and fitness investments.

Two have been Zwift, an online fitness platform involving indoor cycling, and Freeletics, a digital fitness company that offers tools to help promote physical fitness and mental strength. Causeway invested in both companies last September: It led Freeletics $25 million Series B and was involved in Zwifts $450 million Series C.

Wan sees pitches from between two and five companies in this space per month, and while he doesnt try all of them, he is happy to test quite a few of them.

I dont want to use myself as a proxy for the market because I am a sample size of one, but I am curious to see what the experience is like: The style of workout, the intensity, the equipment, how easy it is to sign up and test the customer service, Wan said. With Zwift, we thought it was the best out there as far as cycling, had real scale and a great management team. Freeletics is one of the best out there that is a pure digital app, with scale and a great leadership team.

The fitness category is especially interesting right now as the global health club market nears $100 billion in value, Edwards said. She cited market research which found that while health club members have returned to those facilities or will once it becomes safe again, younger Americans are enjoying exercising at home and plan to continue.

All of the VCs who spoke with Crunchbase News for this article said that the keys to fitness apps and platforms succeeding is for them to fulfill their promises and motivate customers to use them on a regular basis.

Dagres said hes tested products where the full body benefits were stellar, but it either was going to cause long-term stress to his body or it was so boring that he didnt see himself doing it everyday.

You have to have the efficacy, where if you say you will get the calorie burn from a 30-minute workout, you have to make that happen, he added. The other part is just as important, if not more, it has to be something people will do again and again. If not, it has no benefit.

COhatch starting to mesh in Dublin with fitness facility, progress on Riverwalk – ThisWeek Community News

A. Kevin Corvo|ThisWeek group

COhatch continues to be active in Dublin, even before its new 10,000-square-foot facility opens in June at 25 North St. in the historic district.

The coworking company recently addedMesh Fitness, 6778 Riverside Drive in Dublin,to its portfolio of holdings.

Like many industries, fitness has been rocked by the pandemic, said Matt Davis, co-founder and CEO of COhatch.

Founded in 2016 in Worthington, COhatch offers shared work, social and family spaces for rent, and members receive services, activities and amenities that balancework, family and well-being, said Janet Brumfield, a spokeswoman for COhatch.

The acquisition of majority ownership of Mesh Fitness by COhatch is part of its push to deliver an integrated lifestyle for its members and the local Dublin community, Brumfield said.

Mesh Fitness, which opened in 2016, also will remain open to customers who aren't COhatch members.

Meanwhile, construction is underway on the Riverwalk, COhatch'sfirst built-from-the-ground-up space.

The new building is adjacent to North High Brewing, formerly the Brazenhead restaurant at 56 N. High St.

Set to open in June, the Riverwalkwill showcase 25 private offices, five meeting spaces, a private-event area, a podcast studioand a beer garden patio, in partnership with North High Brewing.

The Riverwalkis under construction on the west side of the Scioto River, opposite from Mesh Fitness, but the two banks have beenjoined via Dublin Link, a pedestrian and bicycle bridge that connects Dublins historic downtown district with the new Bridge Park district.

Colleen Gilger, economic-development director for Dublin, said the Riverwalkwill be a welcome addition to the city.

If there is anything Dublin companies have shown us throughout this pandemic, its their ability to be flexible and innovative in their business approach," Gilger said. "COhatchs focus on chic, coworking office space, community impactand now mental and physical wellness through its partnership with Meshwill make its Dublin location the most unique and broad-serving yet."

The Riverwalkwill be the 11th COhatch facility. It has six in Columbus, two in Cincinnati and one each in Springfield and Indianapolis, Brumfield said.

But 14 are under construction, and within four years, COhatch plans to have 10 locations in each of four cities:Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Indianapolis, Davis said.

As for the Dublin operation, Mesh Fitness will be expanded as part of the acquisition, Davis said.

Our plans to expand Mesh are consistent with COhatchs mission to strengthen communities and improve lives, Davis said.

Mesh Fitness provides fitness programmers, trainers, nutritional services and many strength machines and pieces of cardio equipment.

New amenities include a room for yoga and meditation and a golf simulator, Davis said.

Shannon McGill, founder and CEO of DIAM Business Consulting, is a COhatch member.

As a small-business owner, trying to separate personal life from work is hard," she said. "I appreciate COhatch for providing resources and a support network for entrepreneurs. The acquisition of Mesh makes it even easier to lead a healthy professional and personal life."

Focus on fitness ignited with new year – Community journal

So, despite COVID, or maybe because of it, did you make a New Years resolution to find a place to work out and get healthier? Thats what usually happens about now. And Kerrville has several places that could help. In general, their owners/managers say finding the right fit is the best first step.

04 Strength garage gym

David and Lizzie Riley opened 04 Strength garage gym in early March 2017, and now are operating in their third location at 2610 Junction Hwy., Kerrville. David said they outgrew two previous locations, offering their functional fitness training sessions.

They offer classes six days/week, including 5:30 a.m. classes Mondays through Wednesdays, and Fridays; and as late as 6:30 p.m. three days/week.

Nothing is off the table for what we do. And mostly what we do is train with standard dumbbells, plus we carry odd objects sometimes most days its a combination, he said.

Riley said with prospective/new students, first he or Lizzie talks to them about their current fitness level, age, health, and comfort working out.

So far they have about 60 percent men taking classes, and about 40 percent women, and an age range right now of 13 years to some in their 70s. All are equally intent on their personal fitness and for some, possible competitions.

Our weights start at 1 pound, and go up from there, Riley said.

The personalities of the adult students leads to impromptu contests at the end of some classes to try varying heavy weights on barbells one student at a time, to see one more time who improved their score or can lift the most weight.

Riley said there are hundreds of functional fitness competitions, and many of his students enjoy competing. At least two have been training to compete nationally the first weekend in February.

Our weekday clients are usually less hard core, Riley said. The couple works with one fulltime and two parttime employees for daytime classes.

This is not their only job; the Rileys both are fulltime teachers for Kerrville Independent School District. David is a math teacher at Tivy High and Lizzie is a second-grade teacher.

Costs for the classes are listed on the gyms website http://www.04 strength; and Riley said they chose to ask clients to pay by the month, without written contracts.

He said they usually contact the Rileys by phone or email, or send messages to social media.

If they come by in person to our gym, our biggest class days are Mondays and Wednesdays; and classes last 45 to 60 minutes. Our approximately 80 students include fire and EMS personnel and they have to juggle their different shifts, he said. Memberships are unlimited and people can be in multiple classes in a day.

He said they are operating their gym literally in one side of a garage building, without air conditioning or heating, (Rocky Balboa type) but the east side has five garage doors and one set of glass entry doors. And so far, even into January, all the doors remain open for fresh air during classes, Riley said; and students exercise activities are keeping them warm enough.

We do have a big propane heater we turn on, mainly to warm up the equipment. The floors are padded with stall mats.

Their equipment includes plates that start at -pound and increase to 45 pounds; and kettle bells, round weights with handles on top at varying weights; and squishy balls weighing 6 to 150 pounds.

Riley said when a student needs to start with lighter equipment, he can start them stretching and warming up with a long piece of PVC pipe; and some use those without weights. Various sizes of wooden boxes are used, to work on stepping on and off.

Its always a marathon, not a sprint. Workouts mimic different things we do in life.

Salvation Army Kroc Center

Lance Wilke, fitness and wellness coordinator, said his baby right now at the Fitness Center is the Fit4Life program.

This is a free, year-long program focusing on four areas of wellness including the physical, spiritual, mental and helping others.

Participants have to qualify to be part of this program with two major medical conditions.

Applications for upcoming cycles are available at the welcome desk. The application for the summer 2021 cycle that runs May 1-Aug. 17, is due March 31 at the Kroc Center. Those who complete this program earn added activities, he said.

For others who want to pick a studio class, the options are numerous, ranging from AB Attack and Abs w/ Glutes, through Barre Joy, Boot Camp, Cardio Fusion, Chair Yoga, Funtastic, Gentle Myofascial, Indoor Cycling and Power Yoga, to Quicksilver (a class for seniors), Sculpt, Silverdancers, Stretch and Tone, Sunrise Barre, Tabata, TRX, Yoga and Zumba.

There are two classes, Water Aerobics and Water Tabata, that are possible because of the new inflatable and heated roof/housing over the lap pool outside.

Some of these classes start as early as 8:15 a.m.; a few are held in the evenings. Check the schedule for days and times.

Wilke said the Kroc Center is the first place here to offer on-demand video classes.

We have hundreds of trademarked classes that can be streamed into a studio, he said. And group exercise is one of our big draws.

He said the approximately 10 trainers are independent contractors and work with the Kroc staff to draw clients in. And each instructor teaches groups of 18-25 people at a time.

Each new annual member is allowed a free one-hour assessment and session with a certified personal trainer. And for a fee, a new member can get a one-on-one lesson on how to use the fitness equipment and machines safely and what they each do.

We see a lot of new people in January and February; and try to promote annual memberships.

Assessments start with whats good for the client at that point. We start our personal training offers in January for a reason. We talk about whats good for the client, and its up to the client to continue, Wilke said. Some come, pick the trainers brain and work out, while others come and do their own thing and leave.

Wilke said one way to get information as a newcomer to regular exercise is to attend a monthly Lunch and Learn, especially one that he subtitles Ask the trainer! A personal trainer Q&A Panel Discussion. He planned one Jan. 26 with five trainer-speakers; and said these programs will be monthly again starting this spring, with free boxed salad lunches for the first 20 attendees.

Wilke said they also have periodic challenges to the general membership. The current example for March is to challenge members to lose 10 percent of their body weight in a certain time period. And the names of eight successful clients go into a hat, to award prizes at the end.

Another upcoming challenge is the Route 66 Member Challenge with registration April 19-28, for activities May 3-July 11. Participants will walk 200 miles on treadmills over 66 days, a nostalgic trip through classic Americana. Each days travel will be inspired each day with verses from the each of the Bibles 66 books.

Wilke said in August through October they will hold Couch to 5K, a workout program of walking and running that finishes with participation in the Krocs annual Pumpkin Run.

Overall, Wilke said, You cant outrun a bad diet. It all starts with whats on the fork. Its a pretty effective combination if its diet changes and exercise.

He advises newbies to first seek a doctors guidance about what to avoid and what to incorporate; talk about goals and after that, keep to consistency, patience and willingness to change.

He said the biggest mistakes are usually doing too much, too soon; and best is an exercise you do consistently and then adapt gradually to make it more challenging.

Peak Fitness

Duane Shortt, owner and general manager at Peak Fitness, said his fitness center at 1337 Bandera Hwy. is open 24/7 and somebody is there all the time.

Customers can check in automatically at the front desk, though now that comes with a thermometer for checking temperatures and hand sanitizer.

He has five contracted trainers, and a group exercise instructor.

Basically we have one type of membership but different ways people can implement it, including individual to corporate or full corporate wellness program.

Newbies can get a tour of the facility, information on what to expect, advice on goals to set, and what kind of membership will benefit the individual based on one free consultation with a trainer.

The trainer will call to set up a meeting; then discuss options, classes and programs, he said.

Later the trainer may be available again for a fee.

New people may ask about a specific activity or sport; or weight loss, or lean muscle, or strength, he said. I have more than 30 years experience and my staff a total of a lot of experience.

Folks want a good quality of life and to stay healthy and be mobile. We talk to a lot of them about mobility and illness effects, Shortt said. Theres a little bit of intimidation there where it looks like everybody is buff and in shape. Thats the wrong picture to send. Its about feeling good and having healthy wellness.

Peak also offers childrens sports.

Their 30,000 square-foot facility includes modern equipment and a 30-yard indoor field for agility, strength and balance activities.

January 2021 was slower with New Years resolutions. But breathing better is a huge plus, and staying healthy by boosting your immune system.

Peak asks for a completed physicians release form; and newbies are told what to bring, how to dress and timing of activities.

Classes arent necessarily lengthy, often 35-40 minutes each

Because were here 24/7, it takes all the excuses out. Theres somebody here to keep you company, Shortt said.

The goal is to make the New Years resolution a part of the persons life, a lifestyle change that continues into next year. Every membership level has access to the entire facility, including the natatorium for swimming activities, along with the hot tub and dry sauna there.

If they stop exercising, they wont stay at the same level for long. They have to make it all part of their lifestyle.

Peak Fitness asks new members for an initiation fee, then seven levels of membership fees, plus the option of guest passes.

For more information, visit their location, or call 315-PEAK; or visit the website, http://www.KerrvillePeak. com.
