Traditionally, if you wanted to get fit, you would sign up for a gym and go there regularly to lift weights, use the treadmill or perform other exercises. Alternatively, you could focus on cardio and take up running, cycling, or other sports. In either case, you could get a personal trainer to provide guidance and help you achieve your goals.
The events of this year have changed those options drastically, however. As a result of the restriction on movements around the world, outdoor sports have not been an option for a few months, and nor have going to the gym or meeting with your personal trainer. Those happenings have all culminated in a defining moment for the fitness industry, shaking the traditional models up and presenting a plethora of opportunities for entrepreneurs willing to exercise their business muscles.

The global online fitness market size was estimated to have a value of 6,046 Million dollars in 2019 many studies have projected that it will likely attain a size of 59,231 Million dollars in 2027. That would represent growth of about 33.1% annually each year. This growth is largely driven by a variety of products and services that have sprung up to revolutionize the fitness industry by making it safer and more convenient to access fitness training through on-demand classes and workouts taught by experienced fitness trainers. These are typically accessible using apps that can be downloaded onto mobile phones, computers, and TVs. The personal trainer experience is diluted to an extent in this model because the classes and workouts are not personal in that they are produced like any other video and then published for the access of all subscribers to the service.
Nonetheless, personal trainers are able to still provide effective direction and motivation for most people to have a complete and satisfying workout. In addition, the prices for the streaming services are generally very affordable, with many of them being in the $20 range, thus making removing cost as a barrier for most people.

For those who find the pre-recorded workouts too impersonal, the next step up is to find a personal trainer who offers virtual coaching classes. These classes are held using tools like Zoom and Google Meet which though not originally intended for use by personal trainers, lend themselves well to the purpose. With those tools, trainers can cater to groups of students in live sessions and offer a more personal and interactive session that can be obtained using the streaming services.
Many startups have launched to facilitate these classes, connecting students to personal trainers. Even with the fees that these companies charge for their services, personal trainers are still able to earn sums of money that far outstrip the average personal trainer salary. Most of the services allow the personal trainers to set their own fees, and those are usually influenced largely by the persons reputation as well as the certifications and accolades which they have acquired in the course of their career.
The Peloton is probably the most popular one in this category, representing a full package of integrated software and hardware that allows you to take fitness classes designed specifically for the device. Some, like the Peloton, are for one sport, while others, allow for users to explore a variety of workout types.
The workouts are usually led by personal trainers and users may be able to pick whether to stream pre-recorded classes or to have live classes with specific coaches. In addition to offering convenient ways to exercise, these devices also typically offer advanced tracking features that allow users to track everything from their heart rate and temperature to the minutest details of their exercises.

Top fitness executives are fighting to keep gyms open amid coronavirus – Business Insider
While the pandemic has put a damper on Thanksgiving plans for many Americans, rising coronavirus cases are also hindering traditional pre-feast fitness routines like annual turkey trot races and family gym outings.
As of Thursday, four states including Minnesota, New Mexico, Oregon, and Washington re-issued state-mandated shutdowns requiring gyms to temporarily shutter to halt the spread of the virus. And while gyms in most states remain open for now, officials in regions like New York are enforcing earlier closing times and stricter capacity limits for fitness centers.
The closures are sparking outcry and exacerbating existing feuds between gym owners and state officials regarding what types of businesses are permitted to remain open and determined essential.
In conversations with Business Insider, the chief executives of Life Time Fitness, Self Esteem Brands, and Retro Fitness made their case for leaving fitness centers open and explain why they feel closing is a threat to public health. Here's what they had to say.
Compounding the struggle for gym owners and consumers alike is a lack of conclusive data regarding exposure and infection rates at gyms, leaving many experts and policymakers at odds over the best course of action.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintains that "indoor spaces are more risky than outdoor spaces" and several reports found fitness centers including a spin studio in Ontario, Canada and an indoor ice rink in Massachusetts tied to several coronavirus outbreaks. Further, a recent analysis by Northwestern University found that gyms were among superspreader venues early in the virus, based on cellphone mobility data.
Still, other studies including a September report from the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association are reporting contrary findings that show low risk of infection at gyms. While IHRSA reported infection rates as low as .0023% across 2,873 fitness centers, The Washington Post reported that concerns have arisen over the methodology of the survey and conflicts of interest in its development.
Regardless, gym owners are fighting tooth and nail to keep their facilities open, using any helpful data point to their advantage.
Among the most vocal opponents of gym closures is Bahram Akradi, the founder and CEO of Life Time Fitness, a Minnesota-based company that operates more than 150 gyms in 41 markets in the US and Canada. Based on data reported by Life Time Fitness analyzing 3.15 million visits to Minnesota locations since June, there were 352 positive COVID-19 cases tied back to the gyms "which equates to .0001% of total amount of cases in the state," it said in a statement.
According to Akradi, forcing gyms to close is "gross negligence" on behalf of state lawmakers, who he said are perpetuating "rhetoric" that points to gyms as coronavirus spreaders. Under his guidance, Life Time Fitness filed a letter to the governor of Minnesota last week requesting access to the data that informed the decision to close gyms, and urging lawmakers to reconsider shuttering fitness centers.
"Were asking for all the data they have used to conclude their decisions," he told Business Insider. "Our basic knowledge so far based on all the different communications we've had with different states with these shutdowns is that there is no solid data."
Self Esteem Brands another Minnesota-based health company that owns Anytime Fitness, The Bar Method, and Basecamp Fitness has also joined the push against policymakers, sharing a memo of their own.
CEO Chuck Runyon told Business Insider his company has had the benefit of operating in 40 countries, many of which have deemed gyms and fitness as essential businesses.He said that while he is "frustrated" the same considerations aren't being made in his company's home state, he is optimistic that lawmakers may be amendable.
"There is some good news that policymakers around the world are noticing that [fitness] is essential," Runyon said. "They are keeping gyms open, knowing the essential services we provide people, especially in a time of duress."

A major argument among fitness executives for keeping gyms open is the advantage of maintaining physical and mental health during the pandemic, which experts say can stave off the virus and prevent severe symptoms that require hospitalization if contracted.
"If you look at a macro level, what's frustrating to us is this country has a health problem and it's not just COVID," Runyon said. "The underlying issues are obesity, Type 2 diabetes, inactivity, mental health. There is no better time for health officials around the country to remind people to take control of our health."
According to Runyon, maintaining a fitness regime plays a vital role in "lifestyle medicine," the concept of proactively staying healthy in order to prevent disease.
"Lifestyle medicine is absolutely critical and the ultimate cure to healthcare costs is healthier people," he said. "It's frustrating that lawmakers underestimate it, don't understand it, or don't believe in it. They should be fighting to keep health clubs open. They should be fighting for health coaches to be just as essential as a nurse or physical therapist."
Andrew Alfano, CEO of the gym chain Retro Fitness, said government officials should be concerned not just about the obesity in America where the adult obesity rate is currently at 42.4 percent, according to the CDC but also the long-term impact of weight gain and unhealthy eating habits adopted during pandemic quarantines.
"Health clubs are an extension of health care," he said. "Exercise is medicine and being fit and healthy is the best vaccine anyone can have."
Akradi echoed Runyon and Alfano, and said his goal is to help prevent skyrocketing hospital admission rates by keeping Americans healthy, that way if they do contract the virus they won't experience severe, debilitating symptoms.
"Our goal as a public health company is to reduce the pressure on the hospitals as well," he said. "If people are exercising and they're healthier, even if they get COVID, they are less likely to need hospitalization and put pressure on the hospitals."
Though business has improved for some gym owners since the early days of the pandemic, executives like Akradi are still operating with no profit margin, a challenge he said likely won't be alleviated until the national rollout of a vaccine.
As a result of the pandemic, Akradi said Life Time is likely to lose about $600 million in earnings, adding that he has forgone his salary since March in order to help keep the books balanced.
"We're financially well-heeled enough to take the damage, unlike many other operators who are in a much tougher situation," he said. "This is not a good thing for the health and wellbeing of the communities, to have so many health club operators not be able to make it."
According to Runyon, in certain regions of the country, Self Esteem Brand-owned businesses experienced a surge in memberships after initial lockdowns were loosened and restless residents sought ways to get out of the house and stay fit. While he said the company is projected to soon reach up to 80% of pre-pandemic usage levels at its fitness locations, he said the vaccine will be vital to reclaiming lost business.
"There are obviously some consumer confidence issues that are related to COVID, and I do think a vaccine helps put everyone in the mindset that they can see light at the end of the tunnel," he said. "There are reasons to be enthusiastic, but that being said, we have still not at our COVID levels when it comes to usage. I think the rest of our members are just waiting a bit more until they feel it's 100% safe."
Meanwhile, Retro Fitness has seen a 20% increase in membership sign-ups since its gyms reopened this summer, Alfano said. He anticipates moving forward that health and wellness will become a bigger priority for most Americans after having to endure a pandemic of this scale.
"Health and fitness is about to be more relevant than ever," he said. "If we learned anything during the pandemic, it's that the country had far too many unhealthy behaviors. People want to get back to their health club, they want to be fit and healthy, and I challenge all governors to focus on public health as more than just the virus."

Which Gyms Are Open on Thanksgiving 2020? Planet Fitness, LA Fitness, Equinox Opening Hours – Newsweek
Some gyms are open on Thanksgiving, which this year falls on November 26. Here we look at the hours of operation at some major gyms across the country, including Crunch Fitness, Gold's Gym and more.
Most Planet Fitness gyms are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Contact your local venue to confirm before visiting.
The fitness chain has implemented several safety measures amid the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, including "requiring all members to wear masks while in-club so you can gym safely and confidently.
"Keep a safe distance by putting an imaginary treadmill, or two, between you and others," the company noted.
Guests can also see how many people are at their local branch before visiting through the Planet Fitness mobile app. "Just open up the app and tap Crowd Meter to view how many members are there," the company advises.
Some LA Fitness locations have yet to resume operations amid the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, while several have reopened. Some LA Fitness gyms have been on a reduced schedule on Thanksgiving in previous years, while some facilities have been closed. Contact your nearest venue to confirm Thanksgiving opening hours before visiting.
The hours of operation at Equinox over holidays, such as Thanksgiving, vary by location. Check your local branch to confirm opening and closing times before visiting.
Equinox gyms have also issued new safety guidelines amid the ongoing pandemic.
"Physical distancing of at least 6-to-10 feet, depending on local guidelines, between members and employees is required at all times. Please respect floor markings and any other visual cues that facilitate distancing at the front desk, in our locker rooms, studios, and other club areas.
"Mask requirements vary by local government mandates," and guests are advised to check their local branch for details before visiting.
Guests are required to make a booking for their gym session before their visit using the Equinox mobile app, while some branches may require a temperature check.

Some branches of Crunch Fitness are operating on reduced hours on Thanksgiving.
Crunch Fitness gyms have introduced several safety measures, including mask requirements for staff "alongside other PPE [personal protective equipment] if required by public health officials.
"We recommend members wear masks within the gym (unless mask wearing is required at all times by public health officials)," the company said.
Social distancing guidelines and enhanced disinfecting equipment have also been implemented, including the "airPHX clean air systems" which "uses atmospheric cold plasma to change a small percentage of the oxygen molecules in the air into a unique spectrum of oxidizing molecules that kill bacteria, viruses, and mold," the company noted.

In a statement updated on November 17, the company said: "All safety guidelines will be made available upon entrance, throughout the gym, and via digital platforms. Live and video monitoring of clubs will be implemented by each franchisee to ensure protocols are being followed.
"Gym capacity [is] limited to a certain number of people, for example five people per 1,000 square feet if required by local mandates," while "no contact training and no equipment sharing training sessions" are allowed.
Staff members will be "strongly encouraged to wear masks and gloves at all times whenever provisions are available," the company noted.

The opening and closing times at Gold's Gym branches vary by location. Contact your local venue to confirm the hours of operation for Thanksgiving before visiting.
The company noted: "Many of our gyms have reopened with modified hours to allow for additional cleaning and safety measures throughout the day.
"Capacity limits for workouts and group exercise classes will be determined based on each gym's state and local guidelines. Visit your local gym page for information on operating hours, class schedules and more.
"All machines and equipment will be staggered by at least 6 feet" and "some amenities may remain temporarily closed or only be available in a limited capacity," the company said.
Some 24 Hour Fitness have reopened amid the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, while others have yet to resume normal hours. Contact your local branch to confirm it's open before visiting on Thanksgiving.
The company noted: "As we begin to reopen clubs, we are introducing new technology, stringent cleaning procedures and social distancing protocols to support the health and wellness of our members and team."
Several safety measures have been introduced, including dedicated hours for senior guests only at some branches.
"Clubs will close overnight to allow for enhanced cleaning" while "all Kids' Clubs, spas, saunas, steam rooms and drinking fountains will remain closed for now, as well as pools and showers in some locations," the company noted.

Its not only in the EPL, however, as the problem is just as rife in the Football League. In a season that has been truncated by COVID-19, what can the average manager do to prevent these happenings and lessen the risk while maintaining high levels of match fitness?
To find out, we spoke again to somebody who knows about football because they work within it. The Secret Coach knows plenty about players fitness, having helped players of various ages cope with the physical stresses and strains of the game we all love. Theyre a professional football coach in English football who will remain anonymous. The Secret Coach has worked with some of the biggest names in the game, been through the coaching badges and is currently part of the coaching team at an English league side and thats all were telling you. As ever, this week, The Secret Coach pulls no punches! They start by explaining to us exactly how it works at the top level.
All teams have improved sports science departments these days, crunching the numbers of players GPS and fitness data so there is a lot more help and guidance for managers, says The Secret Coach. Pre-season is a gradual build-up, with some players not at optimum fitness when the season starts due to international tournaments and holidays to allow for rest. This season, that has not happened, with minimal preparation and players thrown into lots of games. That robustness has not been built up over time.
The gradual process would usually have seen players catching minutes at intervals in a pre-season that allows them to build up to full fitness. Instead, Premier League players got four weeks off since the end of the preceding season due to Project Restart.
These are highly paid athletes in an amazing position who are being paid to do their hobby in effect, says TSC. But they are finely tuned athletes and like a Forumla One car that is finely tuned, the smallest imbalance can cause a breakdown! Managers get the green light from the S&C team and medical staff on players optimum fitness levels and they see who is showing signs of fatigue and might be prone to injury. Its then the managers responsibility to do with that information what they want you dont see the physio making subs! They might have their fingers crossed past the 60-minute mark, but they can only advise!

They train on Monday , travel on Tuesday to play a European away game on Wednesday, then itll be a light session on morning of the game before they play the game, travel home on Thursday before rest and recovery or a light session on the Friday. Those players in European action will likely train on Saturday but not heavily due to another game on Sunday.
It sounds exhausting just hearing about it, but while players are fit as fiddles, TSC believes managers have had to adapt like never before this season.
Managers have to be creative in how they maximise their players training, especially for shape play and tactical work. Match preparation is difficult when they have players all over the place; thats why pre-season is key, there is a lot done in the analysis suite.
Fitness and squad depth are two massive points for discussion in the Premier League this year. How important does TSC think it will be in determining who wins the EPL title?
Squad depth is always an interesting one, they reply. The bigger clubs have more money to pay wages and fans might then argue they are better players, but everyone has the same squad size in the Premier League. You can only name a 25-man squad and as many under-21s as you want, so strength in depth is subjective.
When it comes to the two most successful sides in English football history, The Secret Coach is outspoken.
I look at Manchester United and Liverpool and think they could add one or two quality players with their budget not seven or eight average players just to have bodies. They should promote their youth to give them a chance, otherwise how do they know if they are good enough or not? I used to get frustrated when authorities got involved in fining teams for fielding a weakened team! Who says its weakened? If I rest Ryan Giggs and put in a youth player whos 21, whats to say he wont be as good as Giggs in the future? If I signed him as a professional footballer, he has a contract to play.
The Secret Coach has plenty of ideas to change this, including allowing Premier League Managers to add two more substitutes in the form of under-21 squad players to help protect players from being injured. At lower league clubs, though, life is very different to the Premier League. How bad do fitness levels get in the lower professional league in England and what can coaches do to help players who arent being paid a kings ransom to play?
Lower league clubs have more time, says TSC. There are less internationals, so player fitness can be monitored very closely. At a club Ive worked at, we had an excellent S&C team and medical staff. We had a fair share of injuries but the work they put in with the teamas a whole and individuals was awesome. Fitness work is not just a team thing the whole squad has tailored plans, with six players doing one thing, 10 players doing another and with pairs and individuals working very differently before they join up to play as a team.
Recooperation from injury is immensely difficult for any player, but in such a shortened season where there are no fans and the stakes are so high, is it more of a commonplace risk for teams to rush back players. Could the long-term effects be worse for players and, eventually, teams if the medical staff dont take over?
Ive experienced physios saying, Hes out for 3 weeks only for the manager to say to player in front of the physio If we strap it up will you be able to play? We now have so much data on players fitness and well-being that it would take a poor manager to ignore advice and data from the medical staff and rush someone back, although players will try. Some need reigning in sometimes to save themselves from further injury by pushing too hard to come back.
The best players are often either protected from injury by being rested or played when less than fit. But what is the best option?
Leagues are not won with 11 players today, says TSC. Theyre not superhuman and playing at the level they do, the physical demands can take its toll and you risk burn out, not just injury but when the body is stressed, the immune system is lowered so youre open to colds and other such issues. Just like an office worker who has five meetings and three reports all due the next day can end up ill at the end of the week, managers need to manage the workload of players so fans get to see better players being rested for certain games. You see it all the time, especially with older players look at Sir Alex Fergusons management of Ryan Giggs.
With COVID-19 forcing players into Zoom calls, personal fitness sessions from home and more, the Coronavirus pandemic has a lot to answer for, but could it have had positive effects on some players fitness?
With COVID, players have had to utilise the opportunities theyve had. Fitness can be done anywhere; you have so many personal trainers unable to get to gyms doing things online with clients and only have to look at how many people are now active after being allowed out to exercise in lockdown. Football players are no different.
With clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool both of whom lead the Premier League after the latest round of fixtures training their players on Zoom when lockdown struck, the clubs who think outside the box may yet be rewarded with the greatest prizes at the end of the tunnel.

How to Maintain Your Fitness Routine During the Holidays – Houstonia Magazine
Raise your hand if youve ever second guessed that second slice of pumpkin pie at Grandmas house after spending all day curled up on the couch looking like the actual potatoes she was peeling for the casserole. Now raise your other hand if you ate the pie anyways.
Its the holiday season, and every year, between the traveling, the general merriment, the sleeping in your childhood twin bed even though youre a grown adult, and the feasting, maintaining any sort of fitness regime falls to the wayside. And come January, when somehow even your stretchy yoga pants are too tight, the resolutions begin.
But how can we keep up some semblance of a workout routine during the holidays, even if were away from home? Just get up and do something, says Ida Clay, head coach of Orangetheory FitnessWest University.
My most important thing is to just move, she says. Even if its a walk.
And if youre used to the equipment of your local gym, there are plenty of household items lying around Grandpas garage that you can sub in, says Clay. Need weights? Try laundry detergent, a backpack filled with books, your carryon luggage, or cat litter. Are you the one doing the cooking? Do some arms curls with the cranberry cans before you make the sauce. Heck, just lifting the turkey is a workout.
But no matter what, Clay, whos been a coach with Orangetheory since 2017, says the main thing she encourages her clients to do is prioritize their wellness, no matter the time of year. I know a lot of times, people are like, January 1, January 1, she says, and Im going to say theres no day like the present.
We chatted with Clay about staying motivated during the holidays and how to work out anywhere, even Grandmas house.
Consistency. Staying committed. And I always talk about commitment to oneself. Whats your why? Why you showed up for yourself in the first place and letting that be your motivator to keep coming back.
One of the things I always tend to focus on is making sure that you make your health a priority. So yes, I have these parties; yes, I have the holidays, and we all sit down around the table and enjoy each others company and enjoy the food; but what are you do for yourself before that? How is self care something thats primary in your life? Because we cannot pour from an empty cup, and a lot of times, for mental and physical wellbeing, we have to fill up our cup first before we can pour into other peoples cups.
First and foremost, set up a plan. If I am going to somewhere else for the holidays, what is going to be my health and wellness routine thats going to keep me motivated and keep me feeling my best self? Is it waking up an hour early and doing some meditation and then going for a walk?
Find a buddy. Get someone whos with you where youre at. Say, Hey, come do this with me. Get the whole familybe like, Hey, before we start cooking today, lets all throw on some workout clothes, pull out the mats. Go toOrange Theory At-Home Workouts on YouTube, and lets get it done. Twenty to 30 minutes, done. Sweat, heart rate gets up, youre feeling goodokay, lets shower and start cooking. And then you have something to talk about, right? Youre not talking about other stuff, youre talking about how youre feeling. Youre feeling good.
Theres a good hamstring stretch: You would extend your right leg outthese are a good dynamic stretchflex your foot; reach down towards the ground with both arms, like scooping something off the ground; and then reach all the way up. I would do 30 seconds on each leg.
For the meat of the exercise, do some reverse lunges with torso rotations. These are just bodyweight exercises. Reverse lunge: Keep your legs shoulder-width apart. And then when you rotate, you want to take your chest away from your back leg, so rotate your chest over your front leg. And when youre in lunges, you always want to make sure your knee is stacked over your ankle and that youre going straight down, rather than leaning forward. Because anytime you go forward, you put pressure on your front feet, and that can eventually result in an injury.
Always stretch at the end. Cool down stretches: Lay down onto your mat or on your back, and do some supine twists. Bring both knees to your chest; circle one way, circle the other. Hamstring stretch: Bring one knee in, extend the other leg. Straighten your leg as far as you can. And then do some cross-body stretches with your arms.
I always like to end with the forward fold, and then rolling up, your heads the last thing to come upyour chin, both arms up to the sky. Big stretch, filling your with oxygen. Breath is so important, and so many people forget that during their workouts. And then you would exhale as you press the air down. And then big shoulder roll up, down, and back, and youre good to go.
So really realizing that when we commit this time to our health and wellness, were actually keeping ourselves healthy and preventing our immune systems from becoming weak. Theyre actually getting stronger. So as a result, our entire lives are going to be stronger. I would say health is wellness.
Dont make it a resolution, make it a commitment to yourself. And thats why I say theres no day like today. And dont wait until January 1.
