UNC partners with fitness nonprofit to support youth sports – SFGate

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) North Carolina is partnering with the National Fitness Foundation in its work to raise awareness and funding for youth sports and physical-education programs.

Foundation executive director Clay Walker said the partnership announced Wednesday is the first for an NCAA institution. The congressionally chartered nonprofit offers grants and training with the goal of improving youth health through fitness and sports.

Athletics director Bubba Cunningham said UNC is still developing plans, such as possibly having coaches running instructional clinics virtually amid the coronavirus pandemic or eventually in-person for adults coaching local youth teams.

Theyll show up if the assistant basketball coach shows up or the assistant baseball coach goes and works with the little league coaches, said Cunningham, adding that UNC will partner with a local fundraising group benefitting youth sports programs in areas with limited resources.

Walker said the UNC partnership is a pilot model with the goal of expanding to other NCAA schools for direct local impact. The foundations partnerships include the NFLs Los Angeles Chargers, AAU and private companies.

Man United sweating on Maguire, Lindelof fitness vs. West Brom – sources – ESPN

6:08 AM ET

Rob DawsonCorrespondent

Manchester United are sweating on the fitness of first-choice centre-back pair Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof ahead of West Brom's visit to Old Trafford on Saturday, sources have told ESPN.

Maguire was able to complete 90 minutes for England against Iceland on Wednesday but afterwards reported bruising to his foot and will be assessed when he returns to Carrington on Thursday.

- Stream ESPN FC Daily on ESPN+ (U.S. only)- ESPN+ viewer's guide: Bundesliga, Serie A, MLS, FA Cup and more

Meanwhile, club medical staff are growing increasingly concerned about Lindelof's back injury.

Guardiola extends Man City deal until 2023 Lampard 'still searching' for Pulisic injury solution De Bruyne: Foden to become world's best New FIFA rules to protect female players German club to produce own kit next year Sources: Man Utd defensive issues mount Mourinho: I'm now "The Experienced One"

The 26-year-old has been playing with the issue for much of the season and the problem flared up again during the 3-1 win at Everton before the international break.

Lindelof managed 90 minutes for Sweden in their 2-1 win over Croatia on Saturday but was forced off during the second half of the 4-2 defeat to France on Tuesday.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is already having to carefully manage Lindelof's workload to navigate a packed schedule that will only get more hectic through December and January.

Lindelof was left on the bench for the 2-1 defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir despite an injury forcing off Axel Tuanzebe at half-time. Midfielder Scott McTominay filled in at centre-back instead.

United have Tuanzebe available to fill in and Eric Bailly is nearing a return after missing more than a month with a muscle problem. The Ivory Coast international hasn't featured since the 6-1 defeat to Tottenham on Oct. 4.

United are hopeful of having left-back Alex Telles available to face West Brom after returning a negative test for the coronavirus while on international duty with Brazil.

The 27-year-old, who has already spent a period in isolation after contracting COVID-19, will have to return a second negative before being cleared to play but United are confident he will be able to deputise for Luke Shaw, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Shaw could be out for another month but is targeting a return to action in time for the first Manchester derby of the season against City at Old Trafford on Dec. 12.

Should Telles feature against West Brom, it would be his Premier League debut following his summer move from Porto.

Rohit Sharma arrives at the NCA amid lack of clarity over fitness | ESPN.com – ESPN

A week after returning home from the UAE as a victorious IPL captain, Rohit Sharma, who played the last three weeks of the tournament at "70 percent fitness" according to the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, arrived at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru on Thursday. It isn't clear yet if Rohit is at the NCA to finish his rehabilitation or take a fitness test.

There has been some confusion surrounding Rohit's hamstring injury. It was expected earlier that he would fly with the rest of the team to Australia directly from Dubai on November 12. And only a week prior to the departure, Ganguly had asked Rohit to exercise caution given the nature of his injury.

"Rohit is injured at the moment. Otherwise, why would we leave out a player like him? He is the vice-captain of the national [limited-overs'] team," Ganguly had said. "We will have to assess him. I don't know [when he can come back]. He hasn't played so far since the time he has got injured. We want him to recover. It's the BCCI's job to get their best players on the park. If he recovers, he plays."

ALSO READ: Wriddhiman Saha back at India nets, on road to recovery

Rohit had suffered a hamstring tear in his left leg during the Mumbai Indians' match against the Kings XI Punjab in Dubai on October 18. He missed the team's next four games, but came back for the last three, helping them seal the title with a match-winning half-century against the Delhi Capitals in the final.

The selection committee had first left Rohit out of all three squads for Australia, but he was later added to the Test squad. If he is cleared by the NCA staff and Sunil Joshi, the chief selector who is also assessing the fitness of Ishant Sharma at the NCA, Rohit will join the squad directly ahead of the Test series.

But it isn't yet clear if Rohit and Ishant will be available for both the warm-up fixtures leading into the first Test in Adelaide from December 17.

Watch These Calisthenics Athletes Take on the U.S. Army Fitness Test – menshealth.com

Inspired by fellow YouTuber Stan Browney's recent attempt, Yannick and Michael from the Calisthenics Family channel threw themselves into the U.S. Army physical fitness test (PFT) for their latest challenge video. The PFT, which assesses whether a candidate's functional fitness is sufficient to start basic training, consists of 2 minutes of pushups, 2 minutes of situps, and a 2-mile (3.2 km) run.

Given that bodyweight exercises fall very much in these guys' wheelhouse, Yannick and Michael aren't too concerned about the first few rounds of the test. They start off with the pushups, where a minimum of 42 reps is required in the allotted 2 minutes for a passing score. Each repetition must be completed with correct form: hands at shoulder width, and a 90-degree elbow angle at the lower end of the movement.

Yannick goes first and nails a perfect score with 76 pushups in 2 minutes, while Michael also gets full points, with one less rep at 75.

Following a 15-minute recovery period, they take on the next round: situps. The required form here involves a 90-degree knee angle, with somebody holding their feet, and they have to both touch the ground with their upper back and come all the way up for a rep to count. 50 reps are needed to pass, while 80 or above constitute a perfect score.

Yannick completes 88 reps (a perfect score) before collapsing back onto the mat, out of breath. "You're making it tough for me now," says Michael, who is up next and determines to do even better. This time, he narrowly beats Yannick, and wins with 89 reps. "I'm feeling kind of dizzy, man," he says, telling Michael: "If you didn't get 88, I would never have got 89."

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

The third and final round of the PFT is the 2-mile run, where a minimum time of 15:54 is needed in order to pass. Yannick and Michael do this portion of the test together, and complete the run at the same time, with another perfect score: Yannick has a time of 10:53, while Michael finishes one or two seconds ahead of him.

"At the beginning it felt easy to run that hard," says Michael. "Then I felt it... especially after those situps."
