Pacific Northwest fitness, outdoor companies thrive in the pandemic, but will their sudden success endure? – OregonLive

After suffering its worst year ever in 2019, Nautilus is enjoying its best in 2020.

The Vancouver maker of home fitness products enjoyed record operating profits and a huge, 152% increase in sales in its third quarter, the company announced Monday. Its stock had leapt twentyfold in a matter of months.

What happened? Strangely enough, the global pandemic.

The virus that has crippled portions of the economy has created unprecedented opportunities in others. While hotels, countless bars and restaurants and even the nations airlines struggle to stay aloft, purveyors of home fitness products, outdoor gear, bicycles and boats are struggling to meet demand.

Consumers are looking for ways to stay fit and active that also offer some safety from the coronavirus, said Matt Powell, a prominent analyst of consumer retail trends. Companies that fulfill both needs are enjoying insanely good times, he said.

Its not just home fitness companies like Nautilus. Millions of stir-crazy Americans are desperate to get out of the house and yet stay safe.

If youre not going to Italy or Croatia, what are you going to do? said Jess Turner of the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable in Washington, D.C. People chose camping, they chose the outdoors. Its a fun and safe way to socialize with your friends and control your environment.

The question now is whether these pandemic beneficiaries can transform their sudden burst of success into something durable. Mondays news that a prospective vaccine may be nearly ready, and that it may be far more effective than many observers anticipated, sent the Dow soaring more than 800 points in one day but pulled Nautilus down more than 20%.

Jim Barr, Nautilus' CEO, argues that the pandemic has changed the fitness business much like it has changed the commercial real estate business. Working remotely has shown everyone that a traditional office is not absolutely necessary. Closures of commercial gyms have shown people that working out at home is a viable option.

We have surveys in which 25 to 30% of people say theyll never go back to a gym, Barr said.

The Vancouver companys dramatic turnaround seemed highly unlikely just a year ago. The company lost $92.8 million in 2019. Sales declined 21%, to $309 million, its lowest total in six years.

From the outside, the company looked out of ideas, out of momentum and nearly out of money. It had just $11 million in cash on hand, compared to more than $63 million the year before. Barr said the company had missed the trend toward connected fitness -- digitally enabled equipment that links users to coaches or other users.

Pelotons rise to the top of the market was largely due to its pioneering role in connected products, with people meeting up online to ride stationary bikes much as gamers meet over the internet to find Xbox opponents.

Then came the virus and the coronavirus recession. Nautilus' stock hit a low of $1.20 a share on March 23.

The companys phones lit up as the pandemic hit. A nation of gym rats who saw their commercial gyms locked up or in liquidation needed to equip their home gyms. Nautilus shares climbed as high as $28.

Two new stationary bikes introduced the prior fall sold in numbers beyond the companys most optimistic projections. The company unveiled adjustable dumbbells, kettlebells and barbells that allowed the user to set the weight. Barr has dubbed the dumbbells the toilet paper of Nautilus because the company cant keep them on the shelves.

Like many other fitness executives, Barr said the unprecedented sales surge led to complex supply chain issues. Nautilus finished its dynamite third quarter with $72.8 million of backorders.

Barr said the company was both lucky and good. It was ideally positioned to capitalize on the unexpected jump in demand.

Impacts stemming from COVID-19 are changing consumers' exercise habits and preferences in profound ways, he said. Our teams strong sustained execution has enabled us to capitalize on in-home fitness trends and elevated demand.

Some local executives are reluctant to talk about their success when so many others are suffering.

Dave Slover, owner of Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe, said his company was in the right space at the right time, which was a function of luck as much as business acumen.

His chain of kayak retail shops and rental locations had a strong summer and a reasonable year under the circumstances. The Portland companys biggest problem right now is it cant keep enough boats in stock. Customers as far away as Florida are calling looking for specific makes and models.

Going into the next year, our inventory is low, Slover said. Were trying to restock. But the manufacturers cant deliver. This whole just-in-time global supply chain is a disaster.

But Slover echoed the sentiments of other executives when he said in the COVID-19 era, his problems are minor. One of Slovers best friends had to shut down his brewpub, a victim of the virus and associated business restrictions on bars.

Hes a COVID loser, Im a COVID winner, Slover said. We dont talk about business anymore.

Things looked grim last spring for Metolius Climbing in Bend when the virus shutdown was extended to most of the significant rock-climbing sites in the state.

Sales of the companys cams, carabiners and other technical hardware cratered, said Metolius vice president Brooke Sandahl.

But Metolius also sells climbing wall footholds and handholds, hang boards and other home training products for climbers.

Unable to climb on actual rock and also unable or unwilling for safety reasons to go to the neighborhood climbing wall, climbers improvised. Many built their own climbing walls in their garages or backyards.

Metolius was perfectly positioned to capture the fast-expanding home market.

The company started selling kits dubbed a climbing wall in a box. They couldnt keep up with demand. The company is headed toward record sales this year, Sandahl said.

Metolius Climbing Inc. enjoyed a record year in 2020, despite the coronavirus. It sells the colorful plastic holds used in climbing walls.

After years of ho-hum sales, bicycles became one of the hottest products in all of retail in 2020.

Dave Guettler, owner and founder of River City Bicycles in Southeast Portland, said before there was any sign of a boom there was a bust in March, echoing the experience of many other businesses. The virus had hit, Oregonians had been asked to stay home, and River Citys sales plummeted.

Guettler, whod been expecting a strong year, had a huge inventory of new bikes on his shelves. That was when I had my freak-out phase, he said.

But customers soon returned. Guettler improvised to try to keep everyone safe. River City didnt allow customers into the store but rather set up a tent in the adjoining parking lot where customers would wait for his staff to show bikes that they thought would fit customers' needs.

The fact that weve had so little guidance on what to do and how to do it ... It forced us to make it all up as we go, Guettler said. Were not infectious-disease experts.

The enormous inventory that had been keeping Guettler awake at night seemed to vanish overnight. Instead of too many bikes, River Citys problem soon became a shortage. And it wasnt just bikes.

There were no parts, there werent any tubes or tires, Guettler said. This is something unlike weve ever seen before.

He got on the phone with employees who didnt feel comfortable working retail during a pandemic and begged them to return.

His staff was overwhelmed by the volume. At one point, his mechanics faced a backlog of 120 newly sold bikes that needed final assembly.

For those who want to go farther and faster than a bike can reasonably get them, there are motorcycles, power boats and the rig of choice for the outdoors intelligentsia the sprinter van.

Greg Storm has been in the van business since 1973 -- back to the days when a customization meant installing green shag carpet and porthole windows in the back of a Ford Econoline and then spray-painting a mural on the back quarter-panel.

He now works for Van Specialties of Tualatin, which builds custom interiors for sprinter vans. Business has been brisk for years and got even more so in 2020. People just got cabin fever real bad, Storm said. People wont fly. But they want to escape, whether its an RV or a bicycle.

Sprinter vans are not cheap. An empty van costs $40,000 to $70,000, he said. A full custom buildout of the interior can be another $50,000. Want a bathroom? Add another $12,000.

Many of these well-heeled customers are plainly surprised to find themselves considering buying a van. The COVID customer, as Storm calls them, has typically never towed a trailer and has never owned an RV.

I dont think they could probably spell van a year ago, Storm said. But theyre good people. Theyve got the beans.

Reading and regaining fitness Satwik’s priority on recovery road – The New Indian Express

Express News Service

CHENNAI:Sportspersons are known to be mentally tough. But the coronavirus pandemic has challenged even the stronger ones across the world. Closer home, it is no different for Satwiksairaj Rankireddy. For India's badminton doubles specialist, who contracted the virus in August end, it was more of a mental battle that he had to fight after recovering from the infection.

The 20-year-old joined the Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad last month and has begun light training with foreign coaches Namrih Suroto and Dwi Kristiawan. With parents by his side in Amalapuram a town in East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh he was able to retain his sanity during 20 days spent in isolation. Though he has recovered completely, Satwik steps out only for essentials and is confined to a room when not training. While getting on to the court has kept him in good stead, he admits there have been days when he felt low with no one around as only a handful of juniors are currently practising at the academy. With his brother's advise, he has turned to books to keep himself busy.

"It's lonely sometimes, especially after you have spent six months with your family," opened up Satwik. "I do fitness training in the morning and on-court practice in the evening. After that, I'm in my room figuring what to do next. I'm usually not into books but because of my brother, I have bought one My Olympic Dream (by Irish boxing champion Katie Taylor). Now that IPL is over, I need to find something to be occupied. Hope reading will help."

Asymptomatic when he tested positive, Satwik's other challenge was getting back in shape. Having lost four kilos during the lockdown with a proper fitness regime and diet tweaked consciously to remain healthy, he gained weight when he was away from physical activities at home. His priority now is to attain full fitness gradually and then sharpen skills.

"Everyone, from the security guard to the cleaning staff here, said I have become mota (fat). I smiled and told them 'blame corona.' It's difficult at times when you see juniors in full swing and you can't do the same level of intense training," added Satwik. "But patience is the need of the hour. My focus is 70 per cent on fitness and 30 per cent on on-court training. Initially, there was some muscle fatigue. After three-four weeks, I was able to move freely."

Ever since he joined the academy, India's head coach Pullela Gopichand has been in constant touch with him, asking him not to rush back. With no tournament lined up this year, Satwik is targeting the Asian leg of the World Tour a Super 1000 event scheduled for January in Bangkok.

"I will increase the intensity after a week or two. It's important that I don't get injured. The Asian leg is in two months, but we still don't know if it would be held. Ahead of the Olympics, it's important that we get to play three to four tournaments to get into the groove," elaborated the shuttler, who won silver in men's doubles in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Myzone Offers First-Ever Virtual Live Group Fitness Class: MZ-Remote – Club Industry

Myzone has recently launched the worlds first virtual live group workout, MZ-Remote, where participants can connect and exercise together, while receiving real-time biometric feedback and personalized coaching from a trainer, based on their effort.

MZ-Remote is a live virtual gym training tool that displays the heart rate feedback of all participants on one screen, no matter where they choose to work out. Once participants connect through the Myzone app, their live effort performance is tracked via their Myzone heart-rate monitor and is shared with the virtual group, allowing everyone to work out together from their smartphone.

The platform incorporates heart-rate feedback as well as bespoke coaching for all participants, underscoring Myzones commitment to social connectedness despite physical distancing still required for some clients.

A big part of our program here at Kellys Bootcamp involves outdoor workouts, so MZ-Remote is a dream come true for my outdoor classes, said Kelly Young, founder of Kellys Bootcamp. I connect my laptop to WiFi and have all the heart rates on display while we are training outside as well as those that livestream our outdoor classes from home. I use the heart rates to push my students, but I also use the data to provide extra breaks and make sure we are not overtraining. My students have learned so much from heart rate training, and they truly appreciate that effort is rewarded vs. always giving shoutouts to the most fit.

MZ-Remote offers a unique solution when paired with Zoom streaming platform. The instructor hosting the class can monitor the collective effort of everyone within the session and provide encouragement to participants using the feedback derived from the color zones. Now all Myzone users can connect and work out together, and the benefit of the shared feedback on the screen allows for competitiveness, which leads to greater encouragement and motivation, just like in a real class.

Myzone CEO of the Americas Mike Leveque said: At a time when physical distancing may be necessary due to closures, occupancy restrictions or member fear, it is essential to stay socially connected. We wanted to provide our Myzone community with a way to do this through exercise. MZ-Remote differs from other live virtual fitness classes as we do not just simply broadcast our class; we provide personalized coaching to all participants based on their live effort feedback, which everyone else in the workout can also see. Since the start of lockdown, we have had thousands of new users join every week, so we are very excited to offer MZ-Remote where our Myzone community can stay both physically and mentally fit by working out together, remotely.

If you would like to explore how MZ-Remote can improve your members virtual workout experience, we would love to hear from you. Simply email [emailprotected] and a business development representative will contact you.

What Zumba Fitness CEO Alberto Perlman and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos Have in Common, And It’s Not the Danc – Tech Times

Amazon has been around for decades and founder and CEO Jeff Bezos arted it from scratch and he continued to strive until he became the richest man in the world and his company included in the top five most valuable in the world.

Well, there is at least one similarity between Bezos and Alberto Perlman, CEO and co-founder of Zumba Fitness - their ability to listen to customer feedback.

(Photo : CNBC/YouTube)Zumba Fitness CEO Alberto Perlman

Bezos started Amazon in 1994 as an online bookstore, but later made it as "the everything store" after getting response froma thousand random customershe emailed for feedback.

In 2018, Bezos wrote in his letter to shareholders that Amazon Web Services were mostly built "based onlisteningto customers." He added that it is important to ask customers what they want, carefully listen to the answers, and thoughtfully make a plan to provide it quickly.

Bezosalso said that he still read customer complaint emailsand promptly forwards them to respective executives for proper amendments. And this is how the richest man manages his own company: hands-on and ears-on.

Perlman said that the "biggest mistake" business people make is thinking they "know more than their customer."

"Customers cannot tell you what to do, but they can tell you what they're frustrated with," Perlman told CNBC Make It. He said entrepreneurs should have time to listen as well as listen between the lines to customers.

(Photo : CNBC/YouTube)Zumba Fitness founders

Business owners should always use feedback from customers to their advantage, particularly when they share what they love or frustrated with a business. "You can start connecting dots, and that's how you create and solve their problem," he added.

Perlman's constant learning from customer feedback helped Zumba succeed throughout the years. In 2016, Zumba launched Strong Nation, a high intensity interval training (HIIT) program, which easily became a hit.

Similarly, customer feedback also helped Zumba thrive amid the coronavirus pandemic, particularly as the fitness industry wasamong the hardest hit of the lockdowns.

Also, likeother companies, Zumba shifted to online and launched a platform where customers can have virtual Zumba classes. The team keeps updating it with new tools and features based on trainer and customer feedback. This allowed instructors to generate more income as they reach more students, even during the pandemic, although the CEO did not give any figures.

Perlman spent nearly two decades to make Zumba a global brand. From his humble beginnings as an unemployed young man, he wanted to build his own company, but unsure what to venture with. Until one evening in 2001, his mother told him about her aero instructor who is selling out gym classes. He checked out Beto Perez's class.

Once the music started, everyone followed Perez's lively choreography on Latin music as if they dancing with friends, instead of working out. Perlman told the instructor to put his choreography on video to allow more people enjoy it at home.

However, both of them and even Perlman's childhood friend Alberto Aghion whom he worked with his accelerator had the money to make it happen. Instead, they got a camera and decided to shoot a promo at the beach with 200 of Beto's students. They took a video using a Handycam and showed it to potential investors. However, everybody said "no."

However, all the sold out classes Beto had fueled them, so they did not give up. "We knew that the class was powerful, we knew that something was there," Perlman said. Then in 2001, they got a deal they got an Ohio-based company to make a Zumba workout DVD, but the production ate most of their profit.

Also, students and customers wanted to have someone to follow, just like those in the video. Then in 2003, they began certifying instructors and the first class had 150 enrollees.

In 2012, the New York TimesreportedZumba already has more than 100,000 certified instructors with market value of $500 millionafter the Raine Group and Insight Venture Partners invested in the company.

Looking back, Perlman thought everything happened because he listened to customer feedback and used it to improve and further the company's success.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday Sales Will Have the Best Fitness Deals Weve Seen This Year – menshealth.com

Lets face it, its been a challenge to get and stay in shape in 2020. Remember when gyms shuttered, and fitness equipment suddenly sold out in April? Luckily, over the past few months, brands have worked hard to restock fitness favorites that weve missed more than we ever thought possible. Since many gym memberships remain in limbo, among the highly-anticipated Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals are at-home fitness gear and equipment. Retailers arent holding back for 2020expect Black Friday and Cyber Monday fitness deals on everything from gym equipment and activewear to fitness trackers, smartwatches, and other gear.

Its time to say goodbye to excuses and usher in a healthier version of yourself.

Lets start with the basics. Black Fridaywhich is observed on the fourth Friday of Novemberis regarded as the largest shopping event of the year. This year, Black Friday will take place on Friday, November 27. Whether youre on the market for fitness gear or home gym equipment, the key to a successful Black Friday is to get most, if not all of your shopping done digitally.

While online shopping continues to grow exponentially, expect Black Friday to function differently this year. In addition to newly-implemented in-store crowd restrictions, dont expect to line up and camp outside retailers as the clock strikes midnight on Black Friday.

Cyber Monday is traditionally the biggest one-day online shopping event of the year with digital carts overflowing after (the last!) guilty long weekend of eat, sleep, and repeat. But Cyber Monday is also changing with the times. Were expecting retailers to reveal steep fitness web-exclusive deals earlier than ever before. Due to the increased emphasis on digital shopping, from both retailers and consumers, this year, we expect many deals to last well-beyond Cyber Monday.

Fitness brands and retailers are continuing to extend deals beyond Monday and into the week of November 30, best known as Cyber Week. Last year, brand and retailer favorites generously extended deals and discounts to the Tuesday after Cyber Monday, according to Salesforce.

There are plenty of great fitness deals to expect for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, whether youre building out your home gym and on the market for fitness equipment, or youre looking for activewear, sneakers, fitness trackers, or smartwatches.

On the equipment front, Rogue Fitness typically holds their Matte Black Friday sale throughout the month of November. We expect that some sales this year will be limited due to higher-than-usual demand. Referencing previous years, we also expect deals from equipment brands like Precor, TRX, Titan Fitness, FringeSport and XD Fitness, among others. Like many of you, were also keeping our eye out for offers from interactive home gym favorites including Mirror and Peloton.

In addition to equipment, we expect retailers and brands to offer deals on activewear and footwear. What good is a workout without the proper fitness gear? Were watching for deals on gear from brands including Nike, Reebok, Adidas, Puma, New Balance, Champion and more. And how do you plan to track your fitness progress? Cant forget the top fitness trackers and smartwatches of 2020. Last year, we saw unbeatable deals from brands like Suunto, Garmin, Fitbit, Samsung, Apple, Fossil, Mobvoi, and more.

The best fitness deals will come from brands and retail stores. In addition to monitoring deals from brands like Nike, Reebok, Adidas, Puma, New Balance, Champion, were keeping our eye on top retailers that carry fitness equipment. These include Dicks Sporting Goods, Walmart, Amazon, Academy, Target and Home Depot, among other favorites.

These deals will come and go fast. Keep your eye out for digital Black Friday ads, typically released by retailers and brands in early November. In addition to ads, we recommend signing up for newsletters from brands and retailers. Like with most things this year, Black Friday and Cyber Monday may require more advance planning.

With diligent research and a little organization, youll be well on your way to securing the tools to become the fittest version of yourself (note: motivation not included).

Users can choose the frequency and which specific vital signs they want to be announced, so there is no need to check a display screen.

The OxyStrap also has the potential to save lives by accurately tracking oxygen levels, pulse, and body temperatures, and alerting users to abnormalities which could indicate conditions such as altitude sickness, heart malfunctions, and heatstroke. Research has been conducted by the OxyStrap team on Mount Everest. Many people have experienced and suffered from adverse effects of altitude sickness as a result of not properly tracking their oxygen saturation levels during high altitude activities. The OxyStrap offers real-time audio announcement options that are a viable and convenient solution for timely vital sign information. The OxyStrap can help users avoid unnecessary health issues or even deaths that arise from not knowing or accurately tracking vital signs.

"With OxyStrap, we built our device with the medical knowledge that the head is the ideal location for accurate tracking," said Dr. Ron Gertsch, M.D., a bariatric physician and surgeon, and founder of OxyStrap International. "OxyStrap is the only 'on the move' fitness tracker that provides accurate body vital signs including oxygen saturation, heart rate, and body temperature. It offers real-time audio announcements of fitness data so the user can achieve an ideal heart rate and workout intensity for the best possible exercise results with enhanced safety."

Dr. Gertsch added that when he tested the most popular wrist-based fitness trackers on the market, he found they didn't offer the essential features for accurate measurement of body vital signs during workouts. He stated that many respected medical scientific research articles support this claim. Please see p. 18, sec. 4.1, paragraph 1:

Row House offers a 45-minute, full-body rowing experience.

We welcome everyone to come give us a try, local owner Chad Ramsey said. Weve seen folks from 13 to 88 come in here and row. Everybody can create their own intensity.

Husband and wife duo Chad and Shelley Ramsey opened the fitness studio in June and currently have a staff of 11 including class instructors.

We just have a lot of fun overall, Chad Ramsey said. Weve seen some really cool things happen among our members from weight loss, lowering diabetes and improving mental health for some.

Like many businesses, Row House has adapted to the current coronavirus climate with increased cleaning measures in place. Chad Ramsey is optimistic after seeing the growing membership numbers.

Were a small studio and dont share any equipment, he said. As more people continue to learn about us and what we do, hopefully we will continue to have our membership base grow and be able to provide a lasting change and impact in a positive way. Weve already seen it, and its super motivating.
