Brian Pink has squeezed me in between international meetings - one in Switzerland, the next in France, where he is planning something big; the creation of a ''super-census'' able to collect more information about us more cheaply.
Australia's chief statistician slips into Rocksalt in the Canberra suburb of Hawker like a local, which he is. He lives nearby in Belconnen, the north Canberra satellite where the Australian Bureau of Statistics has its headquarters, about 10 kilometres from the apex of government in the parliamentary triangle.
''Our location is an advantage,'' he says over a simple starter of dips and bread. ''Probably 60 per cent of my Canberra staff live in the Belconnen catchment.'' It locks them in, keeps them with the bureau.
So does the rare privilege of having an office in each state capital. ''Many of the graduates we hire want to go back to their home states. We can let them - each state office has a specialty. All of our agricultural work is done in Tasmania for example. Our competitors can't; they lose staff.''
Pink has run the bureau for five years. Before that he ran Statistics New Zealand, landing the job because he was an ABS veteran, having joined what was then the Commonwealth Bureau of Census and Statistics straight out of university in 1966. ''I processed motor vehicle registrations in the Sydney office by hand,'' he says. ''We had to count up the number of Holdens and Falcons on lists sent from the motor registry.''
''I said to the lady who was in charge of it - all of the adding machine operators were women - we ought to be able to write a program to do this. Before long I was computerising the office flexitime system.''
Spiced calamari and pumpkin filos arrive, with nothing stronger than water. Pink is far from reserved, but extravagance and indulgence have been anything but hallmarks of his time at the bureau.
When Canberra called the first time Pink didn't want to go. He and his first wife, Sandra, whom he met when sailing on Middle Harbour, were planning a family. The northern beaches area, his home since childhood, was his playground. (His father died only recently in the family home at Seaforth, aged 97.) He accepted the move on the proviso that it was only for six months and they could commute. ''But they promoted me twice, so we moved to Belconnen.''
Harnessing the power of computing has been the dominant thread in Pink's ABS career, as has putting distance between the bureau and politicians.
Within months of taking the top job on his return from New Zealand he cut off the early access to key statistics traditionally offered to the Treasurer and other ministers, insisting they see them at the same time as everyone else - 11.30am.

It can be sobering to realize that beach and pool season is right around the corner. Maybe that diet you hoped to go on got stuck in neutral. What can you do now?
The prospect of days spent in the sun without the security of a bulky sweater or baggy pants to cover up bellies and bulges often inspires people to reassess their fitness goals in an effort to lose weight. There are some right and wrong ways to shed a few pounds, and here are some guidelines to get you started.
Crash diets
Nutritionists have long noted that crash diets can be unhealthy and ineffective with regards to long-term weight loss. But new research disputes those claims. A recent study from Tufts University found that a slow-and-steady diet is only successful for the very few who are not sidetracked by rich foods or other common food challenges in daily life. In fact, they confirm that, if done correctly with a healthy, calorie-cutting, foodbased diet, fad diets can produce quick and lasting success.
Clinical experience shows that somebody with a serious commitment to weight loss can lose up to 20 pounds - and two to three dress sizes - in two months.
This is not to say you should sustain yourself on grapefruits or cabbage soup. Weight loss that results from such diets is more water weight than fat. Reducing portion sizes and caloric intake could provide a metabolism boost.
Exercise
Being active is usually conducive to losing weight. But the right exercises are also key. Heavy manual labor may not be the best route to take, as building muscle could also increase overall weight and add bulk to the body. Cardiovascular and light toning exercises can help many people achieve their weight-loss goals more quickly than dieting alone.
Many people find the warm weather naturally inspires them to be more active. Make the most of the beautiful weather by getting off the couch and going outside for a walk or a jog.

However, having these skills (or working with a financial advisor who does) is only a prerequisite for success. They won't serve you well if you don't have the patience and discipline required. As Warren Buffett has noted, "The most important quality for an investor is temperament, not intellect."
Unless you can achieve your financial goals while limiting your investments to the safest investment-grade bonds (something very few can do), your must accept that you and your portfolio will face many "stress tests." Economic crises happen with great frequency. Over the past 40 years, investors have been confronted with more than 15 major crises, or about one every 2.5 years. And if you're like most investors, it's unlikely you can recall even the majority of them -- because they were resolved fairly quickly, though success didn't seem so clear at the time. And which investors fared the best? Those who had the patience and discipline to stay the course.
The value premium (value stocks have outperformed growth stocks) has been well documented in the academic literature. Not only has it been large and highly persistent, but it has existed in almost all developed markets (with the exception of Japan) and most emerging markets as well. However, the past five years have seen value perform poorly. This has led many investors to abandon their well-thought-out plans.
From 1927 through 2011, the annual average value premium was 4.7 percent. However, from 2007 through 2011, the value premium was negative in four of the five years, with the annual average premium being negative 3.7 percent. And it has continued to be negative in 2012, testing investor patience and discipline.
But this type performance should have been anticipated. If there weren't long periods of negative performance, there would be no risk and no value premium. The only thing unexpected is the timing of the underperformance, which we can't predict as there are no investors with clear crystal balls. Those investors who knew their financial history would have known that we had experienced similar periods in the past, all occurring during periods of financial crises. The literature demonstrates such periods is just when you should expect the risks of value companies to appear.
Clearly, these periods were difficult for value investors. That's the nature of risk. If you want to seek the higher returns of risky assets, you must accept that there will be periods, even long ones, when you will experience negative outcomes. And there can be no guarantee that even over the long term you will be rewarded for taking risk. If that was the case, there would be no risk. The premiums would be free lunches. That stocks are safe if your horizon is long enough is just another of the many falsehoods believed by many investors. The following are just two examples:
How you react during crises will determine the likelihood of successfully achieving your goals. Unfortunately, most investors, even those who use their heads to develop investment plans, allow their stomachs to take over during crises. And stomachs don't make good investment decisions. They cause us to overreact to the noise of the moment. We succumb to the mistake of recency -- the tendency to give too much weight to recent experience and ignore long-term historical evidence. Fear sets in, and panic takes over as the controlling emotion. And we lose the discipline and patience that's required to be a successful investor.
The bottom line is that while the necessary conditions to be a successful investor are that you have the knowledge of financial history and the math skills to develop a well-thought out financial plan, those conditions aren't sufficient. You also need to have the right temperament. Asking yourself, and honestly answering, these questions will help determine if you have what it takes to be a successful investor:
As you consider the answers, think back to how you felt and acted after the events of September 11, 2001, and during the financial crisis that began in 2007. Experience demonstrates that fear often leads to paralysis, or even worse, panicked selling and the abandonment of well-developed plans. When subjected to the pain of a bear market, even knowledgeable investors often fail to do the right thing because they allow emotions to take over, overriding what the brain knows is the right thing to do.

Women physicians are paid less than their male counterparts. That's according to a new study by researchers from the University of Michigan Health System and Duke University, who found that among 800 top researcher-physicians, women earned an average of $12,194 less than men each yeareven after factors like work hours and area of specialty were taken into account. Over a 30-year career, women earn about $360,000 less than men working the same hours, with the same qualifications. Findings were published Wednesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Researchers can't yet explain what's driving the wage gap. One possibility? Women may be less aggressive when negotiating for pay, or may accept lower salaries in return for, say, less time being on call. "I was both surprised and disturbed," study author Reshma Jagsi, an associate professor at the University of Michigan Health System's Department of Radiation Oncology, told The Detroit Free Press. "Many expect academic institutions to be relatively progressive employers, so if anyone were to have the opportunity of equal pay, you might expect it to be cream-of-the-crop academic researchers."

Summer officially begins next Wednesday, June 20. So hows that New Years weight-loss resolution holding up?
A new survey suggests many people arent ready to hit the beach and show off just yet and work might be to blame.
The survey by jobs website CareerBuilder, released last week, found 44 percent of workers said theyve gained weight at their current jobs with more than half saying they gained more than 10 pounds, and a third saying it was more than 20. Only 16 percent of workers said they lost weight at their current job.
The survey also found weight gain was linked to certain high-stress and sedentary positions, including police, teachers, and IT workers. Here are the reported causes
Based on those tips, CareerBuilder also offered some advice on keeping fit at the office
Take the stairs instead of the elevator, or stop by a coworkers desk instead of sending an email, CareerBuilder suggests. Depending on your commute, you could also make time before or after work for a jog or the gym. Or if you dont drive, get off at an earlier train or bus stop to get in those extra steps.
Snacking can seem innocent when done in small bits and pieces, but the extra calories will start to add up quickly, CareerBuilder says. Keep healthy eating options like carrot chips, bananas, or nuts on hand.
Bringing your lunch to work helps you better control your portions and also saves you money, CareerBuilder says. The survey also reports 10 percent of workers eat lunch from the vending machine once a week, and just 11 percent bring their lunch every work day. Packing your lunch takes a little longer, but it tastes better and costs less. And if you keep track of your calories with a smartphone app, knowing what you eat in advance lets you add them when youre not too busy and might forget.
Skip soda and juice and stick with H2O instead. This helps make you feel fuller faster, and cuts down on the calories, CareerBuilder says. Plus: free refills.
Take daily walks with a coworker, replace your chair with an exercise ball for part of the day, and keep free weights at your desk, CareerBuilder says. Why Jessica Simpson? Because God forbid a new mothers first order of business be to bond with her baby. She has weight to lose and fast!
Its terrible the amount of pressure placed on celebrity mothers and, by extension, non-celebrity mothers to lose baby weight as quickly as possible as soon as they leave the hospital.
Worse, are the celebrities that face the pressure themselves and then turn around and cover magazines promoting their weight loss as an even prouder moment than birthing a healthy baby.
Even Queen Bey has completely fed into this nonsense. She made headlines after telling her fans at a concert that she lost 60 pounds in five months by running on a treadmill and eating lettuce. I hope she was only kidding because that is ridiculous, especially since she is (or was?) breastfeeding.
New mom, actress and author Tia Mowry says that she was encouraged to seek surgery to help her lose her baby weight. At a book signing in DC, she told BellyItchBlog.
Money was being thrown at me to do surgeries and I said no, I want to do it the right way because I know there are moms out there who can relate.
I lost 5 lbs a month which is what your OB/GYN suggest you to do, I would work out 3 times out of the week because moms, who are working moms, who want to spend time with their baby, dont have time to be in the gym 2 hours a day.
And why should they? Its one thing if a person had a baby a decade ago and is still calling the extra poundage post-baby weight, but we really need to give these brand new moms a break.
Studies have shown that most mothers return to their pre-pregnancy weight just a year after giving birth.So why glorify someone who has dropped the weight in five weeks as though that is something to be proud of and aspire toward? Its unrealistic at best and dangerous at worst.
