Dietitians share common myths about nutrition

Year-round, dietitians strive to help individuals make informed food choices. We hope that you hear our messages regarding healthy physical activity and food habits at all times of the year, but you may notice they become a little louder each March as we celebrate Nutrition Month.

Finding reliable information can be tough. The media, internet and book stores are full of nutrition books and articles, so how do you know who and what to trust?

Many food and nutrition books are written by an individual who wishes to share a story about their journey to better health. Its important to recognize, however, that there is not one single diet or food plan that can work for all individuals.

Registered dietitians complete at least five years of post-secondary training that allows them to translate food and nutrition research into individualized goals that can help you achieve success.

Each year Dietitians of Canada choose a nutrition theme to focus on. This year, dietitians are aiming to help you get the real deal on your meal by busting common nutrition myths. Dietitians from around the country have submitted common nutrition myths that they hear from their clients. Lets take a look at a few:

Myth: Sea salt is natural so its better for you than table salt.

Reality: Sea salt, just like kosher and gourmet salt, has about the same amount of sodium as table salt. The differences between sea salt and table salt are taste, texture and how they are made. Most Canadians consume too much salt so, whichever salt you choose, aim to use less. For a flavour boost, sprinkle food with orange or lemon juice, garlic, herbs or spices.

Myth: Superfoods will keep you superhealthy.

Reality: No food has superpowers to keep you healthy on its own. Even if a food is bursting with a beneficial nutrient, your body needs more than that to be healthy. Unfortunately, theres no official superfood definition, and the term is sometimes used to market trendy, expensive foods. Many fruits, vegetables and whole grains that arent labelled super can be equally nutritious, less costly and more widely available.

Myth: A detox diet is a good way to clean out the toxins in your body.

Diet Tips for Business Travelers

Toothbrush? Check. Dress shoes? Check. Your diet? That's all too easy to forget. For those whose jobs require frequent travel, a balanced diet all too often goes right out the window along with a balanced work-home life. A study published last year in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that frequent travel not only expands the waistlines of businesspeople, it can also lead to weight-related medical conditions such as high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, especially in those who spend at least 21 nights away from home each month. You're hardly to blame: A hectic schedule coupled with limited dining options on the road are enough to derail the most determined dieter.

But even with the odds stacked against you, there are ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle while on the go, says Elisabetta Politi, nutrition director at the Duke Diet and Fitness Center. Planning ahead can go a long way. "If you have a plan, you're likely to do better because you're not letting your environment control you," she says. Here are a few tips to keep your regimen on track while you're on the road.

[See: Easiest Diets to Follow: in Pictures]

Pack some snacks

When packing your bags, make sure to throw in some healthy munchies. "We approach the food environment passively, and we don't do that with any other aspect of the environment," says David Katz, founding director of the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center. "If it's cold, we pack warm clothes, and if it's raining, we don't just hope to stay dry. We deal with environmental changes all the time when we travel, and food is no different." Katz recommends that alongside your dress shoes and tie, you throw in some wholesome snacks--like granola or fruit--to help you curb hunger pangs while you're in transit. This will help you stay in control of what you eat. "If I get hungry, the person who's in control of my dietary destiny is me," Katz says. "Not some nincompoop who stocks the vending machine."

[See: 10 Things That Can Sabotage Your Weight Loss]

Stay on schedule

One of the most challenging feats is sticking to a regular meal schedule while traveling. Flights can get delayed or canceled, stranding you in the airport terminal with nothing but a greasy something to wolf down. Long car trips can provide no option but a rest stop. That's why having healthy snacks with you is so vital. Frequent travelers also face time changes and jet lag, which can quickly derail an otherwise perfectly timed eating schedule. According to Katz--who says this problem also plagues shift workers like nurses and security guards--it doesn't matter when you eat as long as you do so regularly. "Getting used to a new schedule is difficult, and everyone adjusts differently," he says. "If it turns out that 3 a.m. is your time for dinner, then do it. A routine really helps regulate what and how much you eat."

Stay hydrated

People often mistake thirst for hunger, says Politi. Hydrating often can help prevent overeating. The Mayo Clinic recommends that men drink roughly 13 glasses of liquids each day, while women should aim for around nine glasses. But just like your diet, your drink choices can negatively affect your weight. When the drink cart makes its way down the airplane aisle, opt for flat water instead of soda to avoid empty calories (and the tummy growls often caused by carbonation).

Wrestlers scale down on drastic weight-cutting measures

Coach Brian Smith will gather his Missouri wrestlers for a team meal tonight in anticipation of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, Thursday through Saturday at Scottrade Center. The pre-tourney dinner has become a ritual for the Tigers, and the table will be especially full and boisterous this year because Missouri is the only team to qualify wrestlers in all 10 weight classes.

What a change from Smith's competitive days at Michigan State in the late 1980s and early '90s.

"The night before a meet, guys would never eat," Smith said. "We'd be trying to cut 10 pounds or more before the weigh-in. I look back and say 'I'm so glad we don't have that any more.'"

But the sport needed a triple tragedy 15 years ago to see the light.

Three collegiate wrestlers died in a span of 33 days in 1997, each trying to "cut weight." The practice involves drastic methods, such as fasting, vomiting, excessive exercise in saunas or sweat suits and other dehydrating practices, to quickly drop 10 pounds or more.

Cutting weight was viewed as a point of pride, a badge of honor, a part of the culture.

The methods caused pervasive physical side effects, including fatigue and greater risk of injury because of a lack of fluids in the joints. Though considered a sign of mental toughness, cutting weight also could exact a psychological toll.

"The kids would focus on the scale instead of wrestling," Smith said. "They would worry about how much weight they had to lose vs. how to improve technique."

The NCAA Wrestling Committee moved swiftly to enact sweeping changes in the same season, and the new rules spread to the high school level within a few years.

Among the changes:

Work it Good

No matter what you think about ObamaCare, no one can argue that healthcare costs are very high right now.

Health insurance has quickly become a no-win situation for both employees and employers. No one wants to foot the ever-increasing bill for insurance coverage.

Here in Baton Rouge, one man has a great solution. Denver Benton helps companies develop corporate wellness programs that both benefit employees and reduce healthcare costs for the employer.

I think all companies can be more active in their employees health, Benton said in an interview last week. Because thats their bread and butter their employees.

Benton is part of a growing national trend in corporations to tackle healthcare through prevention. From offering yoga classes at lunch to building a weight room in the basement, more and more business are taking an active role in the health of their employees and the employees are loving it.

Benton has been developing personal wellness programs for a while. Hes a professional running coach, a fitness consultant, and he teaches the occasional fitness class. About a year and a half ago, Benton turned his attention, and skill set, to corporations.

Theres such a need for corporate wellness programs, he said. Most places dont offer anything to their employees. I saw a need for it.

Benton said he first became interested in the idea when a friend of his working at Albermarle approached him.

They wanted to provide more to their employees, more than just a discount at the gym, he said.

He sat down with Maria Rowland, communications program manager at Albermarle Corporation, and head of the wellness committee there.

Professional Eaters Scarf Down Slices, Tip the Scales Pre-Diet

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire -03/09/12)- Today DietBet.com, an online social dieting game that gives players the opportunity to compete to lose weight, announced the winner of its "last supper" competitive eating contest of gigantic pizza slices at the Ripley's Believe It or Not! Times Square Odditorium, located at 234 West 42nd Street.

Crowds cheered on the three members of All Pro Eating who bulked up on 32" Koronet pizzas before pulling a dietary 180 and weighing in for the start of their four-week long weight loss competition. The winner, Will "The Champ" Millender, not only scarfed down the most slices, but was also the heaviest of the bunch, tipping the scales at a whopping 446 pounds. Joel "The Cannon" Podelsky weighed in at 271.5 pounds and Mike "Sisco-Kid" Sisco weighed in at 268 pounds.

Players who reach their goal of dropping four percent of their starting weight in four weeks will split a $1,000 pot. Trained to do nothing but consume everything in front of them as quickly as possible, these men-turned-eating-machines will think twice before competing over the next month in wing-offs, ravioli races, taco triathlons, and milkshake marathons.

Members of All Pro Eating participating in the competition include:

The Champ, The Cannon, and Sisco-Kid competed live at Ripley's Odditorium on 42nd Street, while the others weighed in remotely. Ripley's Believe It or Not! Times Square's own Greg Dubin, known as the "Great Dubini" emceed the fattening festivities. Amazingly, all three eaters continued to munch on cheesy pizza well after time ran out on the clock.

"These slices of pizza were bigger than the contestants' heads ... and the crowd couldn't believe how quickly the pro-eaters swallowed them down," said Michael Hirsch, president/general manager of Ripley's Believe It or Not! Times Square. "In true Ripley's style, the event showcased a Believe It or Not! twist."

"Maybe that is why I got into competitive eating -- I would never turn down a free lunch," said Joel "The Cannon" Podelsky.

DietBet injects fun, competition, and social collaboration into Americans' seemingly never-ending quest to shed extra weight. Players use the DietBet message boards to offer both encouragement and trash talk. Getting into the spirit, Will "The Champ" Millender already shipped a case of Twinkies to Todd "The Hungry Genius" Greenwald.

"I've been in all kinds of eating competitions and this is one of the most unusual," said Jammin' Joseph Larue. "Getting professional eaters to lose weight ... it's like asking fish to walk or librarians to scream."

"We relish the opportunity to watch these expert eaters tackle a different kind of food-related competition. We're curious to see what they do to fill the time. Maybe Joel 'The Cannon' will get into Words With Friends," said Jamie Rosen, DietBet's founder.

Weight Loss Success: Kim Konkel Stopped Drinking Soda And Lost 98 Pounds

Got a success story of your own? Send it to us at success.stories@huffingtonpost.com and you could be featured on the site!

Name: Kim Konkel Age: 31 Height: 5'7" Before Weight: 236 pounds

How I Gained It: I have always been big. I just read an article that said if you are over 8 pounds, 7 ounces at birth you are considered a large baby. Well, I was 8 pounds, 9 ounces, so right off the bat I was bigger than most kids.

While I was growing up I never really exercised. I was diagnosed with severe asthma that made it hard for me to do much of anything for any length of time. I would play outside and ride bikes and go swimming, but that was about it. And that was only during the summer. Since we live in Wisconsin, playing outside in winter is possible, but only when it's not super-cold, and usually that is just to go sledding.

When I got pregnant with my daughter, I developed severe preeclampsia and got up to 263 pounds. My blood pressure skyrocketed and my doctor put me on medication.

Breaking Point: I was sitting at my computer one day in March of 2011, and I read an article written by Dr. Oz. In the article he was talking about how to lose weight and he said cutting out just 100 calories a day could result in dropping 10 pounds in a year. I had been diagnosed with cervical cancer in December 2010, and I figured the healthier my body was the more likely I was to beat the cancer. I was drinking at least six sodas per day, so that really got me thinking. I did the math and realized by stopping drinking soda I could easily cut out over 700 calories a day, just that easily.

How I Lost It: I started drinking sparkling water instead of soda. If it wasn't for that stuff I would have never been able to give it up. It tastes just like soda, but without any calories, sugar or sodium. I keep a huge supply of it on hand at all times! In the first month I dropped over 12 pounds, by just not drinking soda.

Then, I decided to actually try to start eating healthy. This is hard for me, especially at night. I suffer from severe insomnia. I am awake every two hours, like clockwork. Before, I would get bored or a little hungry and eat a whole TV dinner. I have since discovered I am a huge fan of guacamole! Now, at night when I wake up, I have some guacamole and some tortilla chips and that satisfies me for the next four times I wake up, so I don't eat anything else. I eventually thought about trying to lose more weight. My first goal was to get down to 200 pounds. That happened within a few months, so then I decided to get down to 184. That happened shortly thereafter. I just kept adjusting my goal weight as I would reach the next one.

I stepped on the scale today at 138. I am beyond thrilled. To get to this point I have been extremely disciplined about eating. I went from eating any and everything I wanted to knowing how much fat and how many carbs are in basically every piece of food on the face of the earth! I read tons of articles about weight loss and did a lot of research to educate myself so I would know off-hand what I should eat and what I should avoid.

I discovered that salad dressing doesn't have to be creamy to be good. I love fat-free Italian dressing. Put a touch of parmesan on the salad to give it some protein, and it tastes just like a Caesar salad! I found that in order for a person to be successful in losing weight, he or she needs to find foods that are healthy and tasty. You can't follow a diet if you don't like the food, it won't work. You have to figure out what will work for you. For me, it's all about tricking my brain into thinking I am eating unhealthy food, when I am really not. Take green beans: I flavor them with I Can't Believe It's Not Butter spray. That way, I get the taste of butter with less fat.
