So here are six strategies to gain weightand ensure that those added pounds come in the form of strong, lean muscle instead of fat.

While some evidence suggests you can gain muscle while in a calorie deficit, its much more difficult this way and your potential for how much gained per week will be lower, says Jones.
Your best bet is to increase the number of calories you are eating each day. Think of your meals and snacks and add a little more to eachnot to overwhelm your stomach in one sitting, but rather increase the total for the day in spurts.
I would then suggest adding around 250 to 500 calories per day to your average calorie intake, says Martin.
And consider tracking calories.

For muscle growth to occur, muscle protein synthesis must be greater than muscle protein breakdown. For this reason, those who wish to gain muscle must prioritize adequate protein intake, says Martin.
Spread protein intake throughout the day. I often notice men trying to eat large amounts of protein at once when trying to gain lean mass, but rather than extra scoops of protein powder post workout and 12 ounces of poultry at a meal, aim to include more energy from carbs and split protein intake up so that its delivered more regularly to the blood stream and muscles, allowing for more continuous recovery, says Jones.
Going long periods without food means its harder to spread your protein intake throughout the day, putting your body in a catabolic (breakdown) state for too long, says Jones.
This can mean tapping into muscle protein reserves for energy during your fast, regardless of how much you eat in your short eating window. So, dont fast, and make sure you eat every two or three hours during the day.
You might think you can indulge because you need those extra calories. Not quite true.
Regular or excess alcohol intake impairs recovery processes, which can mean slower gains in both muscle mass and progress with your training program, says Jones.

Obesity has emerged as a significant risk factor for poor outcomes in patients infected with COVID-19. Based on how doctors and others in health care have previously treated patients with obesity or overweight conditions, my guess is that many will respond by declaring: Well, its their own fault for being overweight!
In the spirit of recognizing that people who struggle with weight loss include our family and friends, let me propose a different sentiment.
To those who we have shamed for having excess body weight and/or failing diets: You were right, and we are sorry. After giving you undoable tasks, we ridiculed you. When you tried to tell us, we labeled you as weak and crazy. Because we didnt understand what you were experiencing, we looked down on you. We had never felt it ourselves. We did not know. And for that, we apologize.
This is just one version of the apology we owe our fellow human beings whom we told to lose weight using diet and exercise. Then, when it didnt work, we blamed them for our treatment plan failures and smothered their feedback with prejudice and persecution.
As a physician and researcher, I have worked in this space for many years. I have witnessed firsthand the life-altering power of preexisting ideas, judgments and stereotypes. As time goes on, you feel increasingly discouraged and depressed because of this untenable situation. Frustration wears on your sense of optimism and chips away at your happy moments. You have this rash and you cant tolerate the treatment plan, but no one believes you. They judge you, and say you choose not to use the cream because you lack willpower and resolve. You overhear their conversations: Its her own fault, they say. If that were me, I would just use the d#$% cream.
This is the very definition of prejudice: an opinion, often negative, directed toward someone and related to something that the individual does not control. Although it has been extensively demonstrated that the causes for overweight and obesity are multifactorial, the myth that its the patients fault is still widely accepted. This perception of controllability leads to the assignment of derogatory stigma.
That evening you sit alone. You think theres not a single person on the planet who believes your body wont tolerate this treatment. Society believes you brought this on yourself to begin with; there doesnt seem to be a way out.
We have driven those with overweight and obesity conditions to this place far too many times. We have set them up to take the fall for our failed treatment approaches. When they came to us with the truth about tolerability, we loudly discredited them and said they were mentally weak, noncompliant or lazy.

For starters, we need a new approach, founded on respect and dignity for patients. A fresh lens of acceptance and suspended judgment will allow us to shift our focus toward treatments for the body, rather than mind over matter, which is a concept we use for no other medical condition. A perspective based in objectivity and equality will allow caregivers to escape the antiquated blaming approach and perceive those with overweight or obese conditions in the same light as those with other diseases. Only then will we finally shift the paradigm.

Foods like pizzas, burgers and curries with all the extras might be delicious, but they're also laden with excess salt and saturated fat.
In a bid to curb the growing obesity crisis, Public Health England is urging takeaway and delivery suppliers to voluntarily cut calories by as much as 20% over the next four years.
The move comes as its estimated that around one in every four adults and around one in every five children aged ten to 11 are obese in the UK.
Until widespread change comes into place, there are ways you can enjoy a less calorie-laden takeaway - and it doesnt mean crunching on salad.
Nutritionists shared some easy tips for ditching the high-fat, fast foods without feeling like you've missed out:
Newsflash: if youre ordering a takeaway and you have a perfectly good kitchen nearby, you dont need to buy a whole meal.
Nutritionist Jenna Hope says: If youre ordering a curry, you can serve it with some cooked vegetables at home rather than ordering fried rice."

Reverse dieting can be described as a diet after a diet and is something that has become popular among bodybuilders and professional athletes, allowing them to increase the amount they eat while maintaining their weight and body composition.
Many people believe that reverse dieting could be a strategy to ease back into eating more calories after a restrictive period. But does this work?
A calorie deficit and adding back calories
The fundamentals of losing weight revolve around burning more calories than you consume. Over time, your metabolism adapts to the decreased amount of energy you consume by slowing down. This is why we often reach plateaus and struggle to lose more weight after an initial quick loss.
Many people struggle to maintain their new weight when they quickly increase their caloric intake. But reverse dieting allows you to slowly increase your calorie intake by about 50 to 100 calories for four to ten weeks.
This may help boost your metabolism and help your body burn more calories without additional exercise, but there is currently no concrete scientific evidence that this is what happens.
How could reverse dieting work?
While the evidence is lacking, there are other reasons why reverse dieting could be effective in helping you maintain a post-diet weight.
When someone becomes used to controlling their calories to lose weight, they may feel "out of control" as soon as they reach their target weight and start eating normally again. By slowly adding back calories, it would allow you to feel in control.
Reverse dieting can also slowly help to ease someone back into eating more without being too restrictive, and reduce the fear of quickly regaining weight.
Slowly increasing your calories after being in a caloric deficit may also help balance your hunger hormones such as leptin and ghrelin, although there are as yet no studies to back up this theory.

You overhear their conversations: Its her own fault, they say. If that were me, I would just use the d#$% cream.
This is the very definition of prejudice: an opinion, often negative, directed toward someone and related to something that the individual does not control. Although it has been extensively demonstrated that the causes for overweight and obesity are multifactorial, the myth that its the patients fault is still widely accepted. This perception of controllability leads to the assignment of derogatory stigma.
A setup for failure
That evening you sit alone. You think theres not a single person on the planet who believes your body wont tolerate this treatment. Society believes you brought this on yourself to begin with; there doesnt seem to be a way out.
We have driven those with overweight and obesity conditions to this place far too many times. We have set them up to take the fall for our failed treatment approaches. When they came to us with the truth about tolerability, we loudly discredited them and said they were mentally weak, noncompliant or lazy.

So where do we go from here? If we agree to stop stigmatizing, stereotyping and blaming patients for our treatment failures, and we accept that our current nonsurgical paradigm is ineffective what takes its place?
For starters, we need a new approach, founded on respect and dignity for patients. A fresh lens of acceptance and suspended judgment will allow us to shift our focus toward treatments for the body, rather than mind over matter, which is a concept we use for no other medical condition. A perspective based in objectivity and equality will allow caregivers to escape the antiquated blaming approach and perceive those with overweight or obese conditions in the same light as those with other diseases. Only then will we finally shift the paradigm.

Country music singer Miranda Lambert once revealed that she struggled with her weight at times. Check out these before-and-after pictures from her weight loss journey.
In a November 2019 interview with Health magazine, Miranda Lambert admitted to having battled with self-confidence and her weight occasionally in her profession.
The award-winning singer, who is also an incredible songwriter, likewise shared that she has not generally felt she looked her best onstage.
"My whole life, I've struggled with ups and downs in weight," Lambert confessed, adding that because she only stands five feet and four inches, weight quickly shows on her.
But now, the acclaimed country singer is finally content with the way she looks.She said she has hit a "comfortable place."
"It's so good to find your place," Lambert continued. She added that the last thing she wants to be thinking about while on stage is how her body looks.
Many celebrities usually credit their weight reductionto specific eating regimens or exercise routines. However, Miranda said that she has not been doing a particular regimen or routine, and it is working for her.
In another interview, the singer admitted that spending time at the gym was a huge help in shedding the weight. She credited her cardio and strength training for helping her gain muscle and lose pounds.
Lambert was previously hitched to country singer Blake Shelton. They were marriedfrom 2011 to 2015. Observers think that their failed marriage was the reasonthe lyrics of her greatest hits are all about heartbreak and vengeance.
But the singer appears to have moved on from her very public divorce with Shelton. She discovered love again with her new husband, New York City Police Department Officer Brendan McLoughlin.
The "Heart Like Mine" songstress tied the knot with McLoughlin in January 2019. Their wedding took place in Davidson County, Tennessee.
Before she married McLoughlin, she first had a relationship with Anderson East, a musician from Athens, Alabama,who is currently based in Nashville, Tennessee.
After calling it quits with East, it was rumored that Lambert has had something with singer-songwriter Evan Felker, who is best known as the lead singer of the band Turnpike Troubadours.
Meanwhile, Lambert is one of theperformers who will take the stage for the 55th Academy of Country Music Awards. Other performers includeMaren Morris and Tim McGraw.

Cumnock twins team up to smash weight loss goals shedding seven stone – Cumnock Chronicle
CUMNOCK twins have shed an incredible seven stone between them in just under two years.
Brothers Ryan and Lewis McGregor, 20, have been on a sensational weight loss journey and have hailed their personal trainer Jordan Drummond who got them fighting fit.
Ryan has gone from 19st 3lbs to 15st 3lbs, whilst Lewis has gone from 17st 10lbs to a trim 14st 8lbs.
Lewis lost a total of three stone.
After entering a biggest loser competition at the towns In Da Hut gym, they started to blast the fat which was holding them back and leaving them low on confidence.
Smashing initial targets, they lost a stone each in the first month.
Last week they revealed the incredible results as they set their sights on some new goals.
Ryan told the Chronicle: We were 18 at the time and we were massive.
We were both big props who played rugby but when we stopped playing, we were just really unhappy and
unfit.
We entered the competition as we wanted to become a better version of ourselves.
Lewis and I would join up with another two people, and wed all compete against
each other as a group.
Ryan believes the intense workouts put them on the right track and helped them develop into football coaches for Kilmarnock FC at pro-youth level.
He said: For us it was really intense.
We werent used to that environment of having personal training sessions.
We are always there for each other, thats why weve got the opportunities we have.
Were always there to motivated to push forward.
It has helped us with football coaching. We started going to courses when we were 18 and we were the biggest there.
Now we work in a professional environment and look professional as well.
Its helped our confidence.
The twins helped support each through the testing times as they hit stumbling blocks along the way.
Ryan added: There was times where wed lose so much weight so quickly.
After that first stone, we werent losing. If we did it would only be every second week.
We battled ourselves to get through that.
Jordan was really patient with us.
Jordan added: They have both worked so hard and done exceptionally well.
Its been amazing to see both twin brothers achieving their own personal goals and doing it together.

Incorporating healthy fats is beneficial for weight loss, as well as for your overall health.

If you're old enough to recall the '80s and '90s, you probably remember it as a time of low-fat everything. Dietary fats, regardless of type unsaturated, saturated, omega-3s or trans fats were, for the most part, lumped together and seen as problematic when it came to weight loss and heart health.
It took us some time (read: a few decades) to understand that this line of thinking wasn't entirely accurate and that avoiding all fats was hurting our hearts and waistlines.
Fast forward to today where the keto diet is king, and it appears we're now living on the opposite end of the spectrum. We've gone from limiting fats as much as possible, to a trendy diet that is about 75 percent fat, 20 percent protein, and 5 percent carbohydrates.
So, where do fats belong when it comes to managing our weight and overall health?
The truth is, somewhere in the middle, and the science on this will continue to evolve annoying, I know. The current Institute of Medicine guidelines, based on available science, recommend a diet that is 20 to 35 percent fat, 45 to 65 percent carbs and 10 to 35 percent protein.

Dietary Fat and Weight Loss
Fats are a crucial part of our diet. They are a source of energy and they help our bodies produce hormones and better absorb fat-soluble nutrients like vitamins A, D, E and K, as outlined by the American Heart Association.
A gram of fat (regardless of type) has 9 calories. They're more calorically dense than protein (4 calories per gram) and carbs (also 4 calories per gram). This is one of the reasons why we pursued low-fat diets long ago.
But it's important to keep in mind that eating an excess of calories, regardless of the macronutrient source, will lead to weight gain, and be aware that fats are actually beneficial for weight loss. Here's why:
Dietary Fats Slow Down Digestion
Dietary fats naturally slow "gastric emptying," i.e., the time it takes for food to leave your stomach and continue its course through your GI tract, according to the July 2014 issue of Today's Dietitian.
We know that foods that take a while to digest leave us feeling fuller longer. So, adding a little bit of fat to your meal, like olive oil on a salad, or avocado in your smoothie, will help to slow down how quickly you digest your meal.
Furthermore, research shows adding fiber slows down the digestion of fat even further.
Dietary Fats Favorably Affect Hunger Hormones
There's a growing body of research looking at the effect different types of fat have on various hunger hormones and satiety levels.
A March 2019 study published in Appetite found that eating meals higher in polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs) led to a greater decrease in ghrelin (a hormone that triggers hunger) and higher CCK levels (a hormone that suppresses hunger) compared to monounsaturated fat. The diet high in PUFAs also resulted in lower hunger ratings, although there was no difference between the amount of calories consumed and the reported feelings of fullness.
4 Fats to Add When Youre Trying to Lose Weight
Adding some avocados to your tacos will help you digest the meal slower.

What makes avocados so special when it comes to weight loss? It's the healthy fat and fiber combo. A serving of avocado (one-third of the fruit) has 4.5 grams of fiber and 9 grams of fat, according to the USDA.
If you pair the avocado with a salad, chips or tacos, the added fat will help to slow down the digestion of the meal and the grams of fiber slow it down even further. The only caveat is portion control. Avocado is good, yes, but polishing off a bowl of guac isn't going to help your cause.
Yes, eating fish is great for your health and waistline but salmon (and a few other fish like tuna and sardines) may have the upper hand. These specific types of fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and it turns out, these fats may help improve leptin resistance, according to a July 2015 article published in Today's Dietitian.
If you are carrying some extra weight, chances are you also have chronic inflammation and it's the inflammatory chemicals that cause our body to be less sensitive to leptin, a hormone that decreases our food intake and regulates our metabolism. Omega-3s however, can help make your body less resistant to leptin, allowing it to do its job.
Nuts are a good source of healthy fats they can be up to 80 percent fat, per the Mayo Clinic. And, all tree nuts are good for us. Eating nuts is great for our heart because they help to lower LDL cholesterol levels and reduce inflammation linked to cardiovascular disease.
But walnuts are a standout because they're unique in that they contain a solid dose of omega-3s, according to California Walnuts. This also means they're rich in PUFAs, which we know has been shown to favorably alter our hunger hormone levels as well.
A drizzle of olive oil on your salad may help with your weight-loss efforts.

It may seem counterintuitive to add oil to your salad if you're trying to lose weight, but olive oil may actually help you better manage your body weight. It is a staple of the Mediterranean diet after all, which has been touted as one of the healthiest and most researched diets that we can follow.
Researchers looked at 11 different randomized clinical trials addressing olive oil and weight management and concluded that a diet enriched with olive oil led to a greater reduction in weight than a control diet without, according to a November 2018 meta-analysis published in Revista Espaola de Salud Pblica.
2 Fats to Limit if Youre Trying to Lose Weight
The biggest thing that will lead to weight gain is overeating no matter the source of calories.
That said, we know some foods are beneficial for our health while others are not. Trans fats and saturated fats provide no benefit to our diet and can do more harm than good, although more research is coming out on the effects of different saturated fats stay tuned!
Here's the deal: Trans fats have no redeeming qualities, so much so that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has required that the artificial fat be removed from all processed foods. While the amount in our food supply has been cut back drastically, some still exists, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Margarine, refrigerated dough, baked goods and fried foods like French fries and doughnuts may all contain trans fats.
You won't find trans fats in healthy fat sources of food like chia seeds and almonds, but you may find them in ultra-processed junk food that is typically high in refined grains, too. These are the types of foods you'll want to limit if you're trying to lose weight.
If you're trying to lose weight, chances are you're watching what you eat and trying to eat less. When we do that, it's especially critical that we focus on nutrient-dense foods so that we get all of the nutrients that we need.
By limiting the saturated fat in our diet which we know provides no benefit we leave room for more beneficial sources of fat like mono- and poly-unsaturated fats.
You'll find saturated fat in fatty meats, fried food and butter.
Additionally, saturated fats may increase inflammation by kicking on a pathway that triggers what's called obesity-induced inflammatory response, according to an April 2018 study published in Nutrients. So, if you're overweight, eating foods high in saturated fat may trigger a greater inflammatory response in your body.

When trying to hit a weight loss goal, a diet plan and exercise can help achieve this. The keto, or ketogenic, plan has grown in popularity in recent years.Slimmers who follow it must eat low carb and high fat foods.
Dieters on the plan will usually try to eat less than 25 grams of net carbs a day.
Instead of carbs, they can fill up on foods high in healthy fats and with a moderate protein content.
Doing this is thought to help the body enter into a fat-burning state called ketosis, according to personal trainer and health and fitness tutor for The Training Room Daniel Reilly.

He said: "The theory behind the ketogenic diet is that if you deprive your body of its main source of energy and bring carbohydrates down to less than 10 percent of a person's daily caloric intake, it goes into a state of ketosis, where it burns fat stored in the body for fuel instead.
"During this process, by-products called ketones are produced, which are then used by the body's muscles, tissues, and brain.
"Unlike many fad diets that come and go, the keto diet has been practised since the 1920s and is based upon a solid understanding of physiology and nutrition science.
"This diet works well for so many people because it targets several key, underlying causes of weight gain including hormonal imbalances, elevated insulin, and high blood sugar levels."

Keto-friendly foods include meat, fish, nuts, eggs, dairy, vegetables and low-carb fruits.
Those hoping to lose weight should avoid foods high in sugar and carbs such as bread, pasta, rice, some fruits and sweet treats.
While the diet has worked in some cases, the expert explained it may not be any better than other plans out there.
He added: "A review study by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that after a year, the effects weren't significantly different to those achieved via conventional weight loss methods.
"Research published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition has also shown that drop-out rates are high among people following a keto diet because it's restrictive."
Although the keto diet can help some people lose weight but it may not be sustainable long-term, the expert said.
He warned dieters to consider the impacts before using the keto plan.
"While restrictive weight-loss diets might work in the short-term, the majority of people using them regain that weight and often more," Daniel explained.
"This is partly because restrictive behaviours and eating plans aren't sustainable.
"The carbohydrate restriction may cause nutritional deficiencies, fatigue, low mood, irritability, headaches, constipation, and brain fog."
