The natural law of lag in our lives – Ladders

To lag describes the fact that there is a delay between an action and a result. You most often hear the terms leading or lagging indicators when describing/predicting the behavior of financial markets.

A great example of lag would be when you just had a medical procedure where the doctor immediately tells you that it was a success. Yet honestly, you dont feel that way the next day. Because your body needs time to heal and for you to gain strength. You wont feel healthy again until many weeks later. Your return to health lagged the declaration that your medical procedure was successful.

A contrasting set of statements to this example might include: I fixed my bed today. I cut the grass, Cooked dinner. Washed our windows. Raked the leaves. In these very specific one step processes, there is very little lag between starting the chore and finishing it.

Reflect on the language we use daily in many situations. I joined a gym to lose weight. We instituted a marketing plan for our product. We introduce a new food policy for the organization. Our fundraising plan has been published.

Mistakenly we believe, far too often, that stating intention automatically equals achieving the outcome. As if by stating the intention, the outcome magically appears. But life doesnt work that way. I use the phrase of the natural law of lag in our lives for exactly this reason. For most everything we say we are going to do, there is a natural built-in delay between start and finish. For everything we hope to accomplish, there is this same delay between hope and outcome.

None of us can get away from this natural phenomenon. Realizing that there is this natural lag helps us temper our initial excitement while continuing to put in the work to get to the outcome we desire. The plan, the goal, the intent is only a starting point to many more things that need to happen to get to the result you envisioned.

This is why weight loss, organizational change, company strategy, acquiring new skills or training, settling into a job, mastering a hobby or musical instrument, implementing a new marketing or fundraising program, and so onare so difficult to implement and achieve. They all follow the natural law of lag.

It is this lag that is most difficult for us to navigate. For we tire and lose interest quickly. Our focus gets distracted too often for us to get things done. We become frustrated where nothing immediate happens and so we quit.

The stories we tell ourselves and others about our intentions or goals are crafted only to romanticize the big steps. Little steps each day, with little evidence of progress, do not give us or our egos enough content to create stories that others would marvel. Sadly, keeping our own selves in the dark. Discouraged & impatient, testing our will to persevere when things dont readily seem to be coming together.

Making it imperative for us to make time and patience be our friend instead of our fleeting enemy. While understanding that the lag in our lives has nothing to do with our ability but with our lack of self awareness of how life really works.

The natural law of lag brings so much meaning and focus to the journey of our lives rather than its outcomes. For its during the lag, that the thorns and obstacles in our life test us. Making us stronger and wiser each time, regardless of the outcome.

Enjoy Wedding Season Without Worrying About Weight Gain With These 6 Tips From Nutritionist Nmami Agarwal – NDTV

Weight loss: Try to manage 15 minutes of exercise to burn some calories during wedding season

Weight loss tips: The wedding season is in its full bloom and we do tend to out, almost every day. From sleepless nights to binge drinking, there is room for lots of indulgence and even negligence (of health) when someone close to you is getting married. But, with the help of a few tips and tricks, you can prevent unnecessary weight gain, indigestion, acidity, bloating and other health issues because of constantly eating out, binge drinking and being unable to get proper sleep. Talking about these tricks is nutritionist Nmami Agarwal on Instagram. Keep reading to know what she has to say.

All it requires is some mindfulness, keeping a check on your water intake, practicing portion control, etc. Follow these tips to stay healthy this wedding season:

Refined white sugar is nothing but empty calories. They are a major cause of weight gain during the wedding season. Stay away from sugary drinks, aerated drinks, fruit juices and energy drinks. Also, stay away from candies, cookies and baked food items usually contain lots of sugar, tend to be very low in nutritional value and lots of calories, mentions Nmami in the video.

During the wedding season, make sure that you include fats in your diet. Including healthy fats can help you to stay on track in terms of maintaining weight, keeps you full for longer and reduces your cravings for junk food. All these three are essential prerequisites for maintaining weight and health during the wedding season.

Wherever possible, grab a bottle of water and gulp it down. Attending a close friend's or relative's wedding may keep you very busy, but drinking sufficient water is something that you can take care of without much time and effort. Drinking sufficient water is important to prevent health problems, maintain your weight, for a glowing skin, prevent water retention and bloating, suggests Nmami.

Now this is another very common scenario that would-be brides, may be grooms and brides' best friends follow just because the wedding season is approaching. Following crash diets or low-carb diets for quick weight loss may offer temporary weight loss benefits, but the weight is quickly gained back once you resume regular eating habits. What's more is that these fad diets can make room for cravings, fatigue, mood swings and irritability and these side effects are the last thing you want when you attending a loved one's wedding. If you want to lose weight for a wedding, the practical thing to do is plan well in advance.

Otherwise, the wedding season should not be looked at as the only opportunity to look your best. You should aim towards that goal throughout the year and work towards it more sustainably. In case you have overeaten at a wedding, make the effort of getting back to your regular routine of eating and exercising at the earliest, rather than again opting for fad diets to quickly lose the weight you gained.

"Eat and burn," says Nmami in her video while adding that you should not deprive yourself of anything you like to eat and make sure that you burn it as well. So, if you are able to manage to take out even 15 minutes of a high intensity workout, then it can help you burn some calories you consumed and prevent unnecessary weight gain and health issues. You can also opt for going for a quick morning walk or running session to burn some calories.

This tip is from celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar. In case drinking alcohol cannot be avoided, an efficient way to prevent it from affecting your health is by drinking a glass of water after every drink you take. Alcohol causes dehydration which makes room for a lot of health problems. Also, do not mix drinks as that will intensify the damage caused by alcohol on your liver. Drink slowly, have only one kind of drink and do not binge drink. Alcohol is best avoided, no matter what the occasion.

Make sure you have fun and enjoy the wedding season with full fervour!

Consuming diet pills and laxatives linked to eating disorder diagnosis – Tech Explorist

Many ladies turn to diet pills or laxatives when theyre looking to lose weight fast. However, there are serious concerns over the safety and effectiveness of consuming diet pills and laxatives for weight loss.

Laxatives have become a popular method of weight loss. Many people believe that using laxatives can help increase the frequency of bowel movements and allow for quick, easy, and effortless weight loss. But, the truth of their safety and effectiveness is a serious concern.

A new study shed light on this concern and found that girls and young women who use diet pills and laxatives to control their weight are at increased risk for eating disorders.

Scientists from Harvard Gazette conducted the study, which suggests- consuming diet pills has higher odds of having a first such diagnosis within one to three years than those who did not report using these products.

Scientists analyzed the data from more than 10,000 girls and women, aged 14 to 36, from 2001 to 2016. They used multivariable logistic regression models, adjusting for age, race/ethnicity, and overweight status to estimate the association between weight-control behaviors and subsequent eating disorder diagnosis.

Among those who initially did not have an eating disorder, 1.8% of those who used diet pills in the past year said they received their first eating disorder diagnosis over the next one to three years, compared to 1% of those who did not use diet pills.

The researchers also found that 4.2% of those who used laxatives for weight control were subsequently diagnosed with their first eating disorder, compared to 0.8% of those who did not use laxatives for weight control.

Senior author S. Bryn Austin, a professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Harvard Chan School and director of STRIPED, said, Weve known that diet pills and laxatives when used for weight control can be very harmful substances. We wanted to find out if these products could be a gateway behavior that could lead to an eating order diagnosis.

Our findings parallel what weve known to be true with tobacco and alcohol: Starting harmful substances can set young people on a path to worsening problems, including serious substance-abuse disorder.

The study strictly recommends that policymakers and public health professionals should develop and evaluate policy initiatives to reduce or prohibit access to diet pills and laxatives abused for weight control.

First author Jordan Levinson, clinical research assistant, Division of Adolescent Medicine, Boston Childrens Hospital, said, Our findings are a wake-up call about the serious risks of these products. Instagram took a step in the right direction recently by banning ads to minors for over-the-counter diet pills and detox teas, which are often laxatives.

Its time for retailers and policymakers to take the dangers of these products seriously and take steps to protect youth.

The study was published online in the American Journal of Public Health.

The Myth of Calorie Consumption: What Boosts Fat Burning? – ISPO

Many recreational athletes are struggling with the fact that they do sports regularly, such as jogging, but their fitness does not improve any further. How's that?Basically, I think a lot of people are stepping into this trap. Although these sports units, as described by you, are training in a way, but the body no longer needs to adapt. In other words: I do my sport, which is very good per se, but I only call up my existing fitness level at this point.

In order to get an adjustment in the body I have to vary my jogging bases. For example, by running longer laps or increasing the intensity. The topic of intensity is not about jogging 30 minutes faster, but about training at intervals. That's enough, that the heart rate adjusts, the blood circulation is increased, because the muscles need more oxygen - so I force my body to adjust.

So the same parking round should always be avoided? If you want to boost fitness and calorie consumption, yes. At the beginning, training is more and more stimulating because the body has to get used to it first, but after a certain time the body reaches a kind of plateau and at that point you have to change something again.

Eden Hazard: "At one point this summer I weighed 80 kilos" – AS English

Real Madrid's Eden Hazard has always been one of Nasser Al-Khelafi's footballing desires. In 2012, before the Belgian joined Chelsea, the PSG chief tried to sign him, but the offer was quickly rejected.

The winger joined Los Blancos in the summer and has slowly built up his sharpness following injury with recent signs suggesting he is closing in on the form that had Florentino Prez digging deep into his pockets. And as the international break comes to an end, Hazard has confessed to French outlet L'Equipe that he had also received another offer from the Parisians, which he again declined.

"I will never play for PSG," he categorically stated. "They have wanted me many times.

"I don't have any intention to return to a Ligue 1 club other than Lille. I have always said no to them [PSG]. "In my head everything is clear. It is a team that would give you a chance of winning the Champions League, but they are not among my priorities.

Real Madrid star Eden HazardJAVIER GANDUL(DIARIO AS)

"If I return to Ligue 1, it will be Lille," Hazard affirmed.

Upon being asked about his weight in pre-season, the Belgian was forthcoming: I won't hide this, when I'm on holiday, I'm on holiday. I'm one of those people who can gain and lose weight easily. When I was 18 and with Lille, I weighed 72 kilos. This summer I went up to 80 kilos but managed to lose this in just over ten days.

The Belgian claimed that he has found his feet at his new club followinga difficult start: I've been happy with how things have gone in the past month. I've scored, provided assists and won a spot kick for the side. In this past month, I've been on the ball more and been able to accelerate past rival players. In my initial games, I tried to play in a more straight forward manner

Courtois has been key in helping me adapt but with so many French speakers at the club...Varane, Mendy and Benzema, it makes things far easier.

The player was also askedaboutthe responsibilityof inheritingthe No.7 shirt previouslyworn by Cristiano Ronaldo: It was initially being used by Mariano and I didn't want to make a fuss about a number as its not my style. I knew that Modric wore number 10 and when at Chelsea I wore the number 17, but I also knew that that was allocated to Lucas. In the end it was a decision made by the club.

Real Madrid's French coach Zinedine ZidaneBENJAMIN CREMEL(AFP)

The winger concluded analysing his relationship with French coach Zidane:He's a man of few words. He keeps things simple but he always takes time to talk to me before a match which helps me feel more relaxed. Be happy, he tells me. He's a person who goes straight to the point and is hugely fond of his players. He's keen to maintain an emotional link with the team, even with those players who fail to start. Wee always train with the ball and focus on straightforwardquick drills. Sarri was a little more strict and focused on repetition. I spent three seasons with Italiancoaches and it's easier to find oneselfwith Zidane.

Hazard admits he was overweight when he first joined Real Madrid – Sport English

Eden Hazard, Real Madrid's star signing last summer, has recognised in an interview with L'Equipe that he was overweight when he turned up for preseason with the club.

Upd. at 13:00 CET

SPORT.es

"It's true. I won't hide it. When I am on holiday, I am on holiday. If not, you would never have a holiday. I'm the type of person that puts on weight quickly and later I lose it quickly as well. When I was 18, at Lille I weighed 72 or 73 kilos. Putting on more muscle, I went up to 75. This summer I was 80, but I lost it all in 10 days," the Belgian forward said.

Hazard, who explained that he's turned Paris Saint-Germain down several times, also analysed his performances for Madrid so far.

He added: "I am satisfied with the last month. The only bad thing is the statistics." He has only scored one goal and set up four more since joining Madrid, numbers a long way short of what he posted at Chelsea in England last season.

Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has been an important figure for Hazard and he's delighted to be working with the Frenchman. "The first time I spoke with him was at Euro 2016. He told me: 'It would be good if you came (to Madrid).' When Zidane calls you, it's serious. In my first few months at Madrid, when things were coming off as I wanted, he told me to stay calm. 'Be happy,' he repeated. He loves his players."

How to lose weight like this guy who lost 28 kgs by making these two small changes in his lifestyle – GQ India – What a man’s got to do

Nothing good a lot of money, a great body or your target weight loss goal will ever come easy. But that doesnt mean that good things are impossible to achieve. A little obstacle or an unconventional halt only makes things interesting and often even help you become a better version of yourself. 22-year-old Prayas Mahajan tells us that his nothing good comprised two things: lose weight (fast) and build a kickass body.

I had a simple thought in my mind I wanted to change the way I looked in order to attain a great physique (a physique that I dreamt of!). So, without wasting any time, I commenced on a weight loss journey to trim from 110 kgs to 82 kgs, he says. Actually, I lost a majority of my bodys excess fat in 6 months by following the below weight loss plan, and since then I have consecutively been working towards bettering my form to reach a step closer to my dream bod, he adds.

To lose weight, I made two very simple yet important changes in my lifestyle. One: Completely alienate sugar and fried food from my diet. Two: Cultivate patience.

Initially, all I wanted to do was to lose as much weight as possible and as quickly as possible. I started hitting the gym regularly and also learnt the importance of nutrition, but it wasnt easy. I hail from a Punjabi family, and all our conversations are always centred around our next meal! I grew up having no proper knowledge of nutrition. So, when I started reading about nutrition and cultivating healthier eating habits to get fit, I realised that what you eat amounts to almost 70 per cent of the change you want to see in your body."

"Prior to this realisation, like many weight loss amateurs, I too had this perception that one could eat whatever they wanted as long as they worked out like a crazy person in the gym. Once I was able to see and understand past this myth, fitness became a part and parcel of my lifestyle. Fitness is not a destination but a process. I made changes to my diet, and started seeing some wonderful changes in my physique.

"A diet plan is very specific to a person's age, height, weight, training type, etc. But this is what worked for me."

Early morning (7:00 am): A banana and a cup pf black coffee before working out

Breakfast (9:30 am): An omelette made from 2 whole eggs and 4 egg whites + cheese with watermelon and papaya (when available)

Mid-day snacks (12:00 pm): A serving of fruits and nuts

Lunch (2:00 pm): 150-200 grams of chicken cooked in low oil or grilled along with veggies and rice

Evening snack (between 3-5:30 pm): A serving of fruits and some nuts

Dinner (9:00 pm): Grilled chicken/fish with a bowl of soup/rice and veggies

Notably, I keep changing my diet as per my goals (bulking muscle, fat loss, etc). And, since my end goal was never weight loss; it was to build a lean and muscular physique, which is extremely hard for someone who used to weigh 110 kgs, I keep changing my workout routines as well. But, the below basic workout regime is very effective for anyone whos new to the gym.

"Each day should commence with warm up and stretching for almost 10 minutes, followed by this workout plan":

Flat Bench Press- 10x4 Go as heavy as you can with correct form

Incline Dumbbell Press- 10x4

Incline Chest Fly- 10x4

I have been working out (minimum 5-6 days a week) consistently for the past 4 years now. I have learnt from my mistakes, have done a lot of research as well as watched a lot of videos on YouTube to gain knowledge and insight to better my workouts, diet and overall health. I personally owe everything in my life to my transformation. It has helped my develop confidence, manage my time better and also brought so much discipline and consistency in my life that every day I take small steps to become a better version of myself.

"I have been able to maintain my weight by trying to keep a track of what I eat and completely avoid fried food. I like to indulge in sweets, so I have a bite here and there, but that's the end of it. I try to clock 10,000 steps daily and also workout 6 days a week. I prioritise sleep and try to get at least 7 hours of it and consume 2-3 litres of water every day.

The first and foremost thing for anyone who intends to make a change is to be patient. Changes dont happen overnight and all the years of following a bad lifestyle will require some time to undo. Small consistent efforts every day will go a long way for anyone to reach their goal. Also, the only person you need to compare yourself with is yourself. There are no shortcuts. Please dont fall for traps such as - lose weight in 30 days, slimming tea, fat burners and steroids. The only way you can lose weight by having green tea alone is if you yourself go and pluck the leaves!

I think the most important part of my journey is the chase. I have this virtually impossible physique in mind (my hero). I know I can never attain it, but thats what keeps me going. Every single day, doing what I have to get things done. I think its very important to keep something not easily attainable because ultimately not having achieved that level is what pushes me every day to outdo myself.
