Its easy to look at an actor thats lost up to ten pounds or more in a week and say theyre dedicated. Its also just as easy to say that theyre tearing up their body for their craft. Rapid weight loss and weight gain is impressive only to those that dont seem to understand what the implications are. If more people knew what it takes to actually lose that kind of weight and what it does to the body they might not praise actors for their dedication and discipline.

Here are just a few reasons why rapid weight gain and loss arent that impressive.

It can affect how your organs function.

If you put on too much weight its more work for your lungs to fill up and expand, meaning youll start noticing breathing problems eventually. Should you go the other way and lose too much too fast then you run the risk of throwing your bodys fluid balance out of whack. This can eventually result in damage to the internal organs such as the liver and the heart. Believe it or not you need those to exist.

Losing weight too fast can affect your metabolism.

If you start losing the pounds too quickly, no matter how you do it, your body will go into whats called survival mode. This means youre not getting enough nourishment and as a result the body will start storing calories so that it wont begin to shut down. In this case youre actually bound to gain weight rather than lose any more.

Gaining weight too fast can damage your joints and put undue pressure on your bone structure.

Ever see a person that cant run, walk, or even hobble their way down the street because they weigh so much? Some of those people might have a problem with their glands, but others just dont know how to gain weight evenly or put the snacks down. Gaining weight too fast puts more weight, and therefore more pressure on your joints, which are needed to help you move about. The more pressure you put on your knees in particular, the less time its going to take for something to pop out of socket or just give up entirely, which could result in serious injury.

Whether you gain weight or lose weight too fast, your energy levels will fluctuate at a dangerous rate.

Your body depends on a certain amount of fuel to be present to operate at optimal efficiency. The less you eat the less energy youll have. In the same breath if you eat too much and pack it on too fast your body will lack the proper nutrition to keep working the way it should. A healthy balance is what is needed in order to keep your body running the way it should.

A lot of us have seen stars such as Robert DeNiro, Matthew McConaughey, Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, and even Natalie Portman lose or gain insane amounts of weight to prep for a role. What people need to realize is that as much as theyre trying to stay true to their character, theyre also doing a large amount of damage to their bodies that will eventually catch up with them.

The Debrief: Are we policing them our ourselves?

In some not so newsworthy news: presenter Holly Willoughby has lost some weight. At least, thats what the panel on Loose Women were gossiping about yesterday, unaware they were already on air. 'Holly Willoughbys disappearing!' Loose Womens Nadia Sawalha was heard exclaiming, while a shocked Holly looked on.

Social media users have also been expressing their thoughts on Hollys supposed weight loss, writing things like: Wish I knew how to lose that much weight so quickly and #WhereHaveHollysBoobsGone.

Its sadly not the first, nor the last time someone has expressed their opinion on someone elses physical appearance. When theres a noticeable change in a celebritys weight, especially when said celebrity is a woman, people talk about it.

If they lose weight, everyone wonders how and why, if they gain weight, everyone wonders if theyre pregnant or sick or depressed. The positive and negative connotations involved with this are a whole mine-field in themselves but also why is this any of our business? We saw the same thing recently when Rihanna, who has apparently gained some weight as of late, was re-nicknamed Thickanna. After the initial is she pregnant speculation most of the internet seemed happy with her new appearance - bar a sports writer who worried shed make being fat a trend and encourage all the hot girls to gain weight - UM WHAT!? (He subsequently lost his job so yes there is good in the world.)

Elsewhere on the interwebs came hundreds of thousands of heart eye emojis. Perhaps some departure from the usual reaction to famous women gaining weight but wait hold up why is this our business again? The fact that we place so much emphasis on womens appearances as important and valuable is detrimental, no matter whether that judgement is coloured as criticism or praise.

Thing is, it kind of feels like were basing our own worth, and forming our own judgements on appearance through that same sphere. Because if Rihanna gains weight it means its okay if I gain a little weight too, right? The internet seems to think so, with tweets like: "Rihanna's getting thick. I feel so much better about my thighs. You go gerl [sic] #Thickanna.

And while its important to have all sorts of definitions and examples of beauty, and we can rejoice that weve come quite some way to having broader definitions of that, perhaps what would be even better would be to not place so much emphasis and importance on outer appearance.

Its important to remember that our bodies are likely to grow and change multiple times over the course of our lives. That there are tons and tons of factors that play a role in the appearance of our bodies, lives and minds and that actually whats most important is that were living healthy, happy and fulfilling lives. The truth of that will, and often is, reflected in a healthy and happy appearance.

Because the thing is, not only is looking at pictures of someones shrinking or expanding ass and trying to judge them or ourselves accordingly a waste of time, but it actually wont get us any closer to achieving that. Ever.

The fact is, we just dont need bigger boobs (or a flatter stomach, or a bigger ass, or a more Instagram face.)

Brothers lose 342 pounds combined in 2 years – Today.com

Twins Dillon and Cory Sasvari are identical in almost every way. Their laughs sound indistinguishable, their blood pressures match and even their pulse rates are the same. And, they both spent their entire lives overweight.

While playing football in high school kept their weight around 200 pounds, after graduation they just gained until they both weighed more than 400 pounds. They felt unhappy but didnt know what to do.

Looking at myself in the mirror ... I knew I needed to do something about it, Cory, 25, told TODAY.

Dillon, 25, also felt helpless and weighed 400 pounds at the time.

I didnt know what else to do, he told TODAY. I didnt have diabetes, but I was close to it.

That's when their grandmother, Leona Mesler, intervened.

She said Listen, you and your brother are the biggest I have ever seen you, Cory said. My family, they were concerned about my health I was always fatigued. I was depressed.

Mesler felt especially worried because the then 23-year-olds faced health problems. Both experienced high blood pressure and cholesterol. And Cory had gout that prevented him from moving some days.

Their entire lives Dillon and Cory were overweight. Finally, their grandmother intervened and urged them to lose weight for their health.

Mesler urged them to do something. She mentioned gastric bypass surgery and thought maybe it could help them.

They researched it and visited a doctor at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's Magee-Womens Hospital, who told the twins they needed to lose 10 percent of their body weight before surgery. After meeting with a nutritionist, they had a better understanding of how to change their diets.

The first thing they did was cut soda.

I would drink two or three liters a day, Dillon said.

Simply cutting soft drinks helped tremendously.

Pre-op the weight actually fell off really quickly, said Cory who weighed 405 pounds at the time. I just stopped eating bad foods.

That meant the twins cut sugary cereals, chips, pizza and other processed foods. They noshed on vegetables, fruits, lean proteins and drank lots of water.

Before the surgeries, Dillon lost 50 pounds and Cory lost 70 pounds.

Dillon had his surgery first in April 2015 and Corys took place a week later in May.

Thats how we usually do it. Everything that I do, he does, Dillon said.

Since losing weight, the Sasvari twins feel happier and enjoy playing sports again.

Throughout their weight-loss journeys, the twins supported each other.

Luckily I had a brother who went through the same thing. We always like to compete, said Dillon.

They continue their healthy eating habits and have added exercise into their lives. Both play softball, football and hockey while lifting and running at the gym.

Surgery is not a cure all. It is just a tool to help, Dillon said.

Now, Dillon weighs 225 and Cory weighs 238. While they are happy with their weight, they both agreed they wouldn't mind losing more.

I would definitely like to get around 200 flat and start building muscle after that, said Cory. Dillon agreed hed also like to reach 200.

I dont want to be as big as I used to be, he said. "I like buying smaller clothes. I dont want to buy bigger clothes or go back to my old clothes." Today, the twins no longer need medications and feel confident.

Because I lost the weight, I am more out of my shell, Dillon said. I am more social now.

They provided tips to help people interested in losing weight.

Cory knew he had to lose weight for the doctors to perform surgery. He set a goal to lose 20 pounds. Because he focused on meeting the promise he made himself, he lost much more.

Create more goals and reach those goals, he said. Stay dedicated to what you are doing. Dont lose hope even though you will reach road blocks.

Sometimes Dillon and Cory slip into a pair of fat pants and marvel at how much smaller they are. It helps them remember how exhausting it was being overweight.

The difference is amazing and makes me want to keep going, Dillon said.

Since twins Dillon and Cory lost weight, about 175 and 167 pounds, respectively, the two can fit into one pair of pajama pants that one of them wore when they weighed more than 400 pounds.

While the twins had each others backs while they lost weight, they had loads of people encouraging them, which made it easier.

If you have negative people it is going to make you quit and gain the weight back, Cory said.

Most of us have been there: You're eating healthily, working out, and the pounds are coming off, then there's a break in the momentum and you gain a few pounds out of nowhere. It's a frustrating setback, to say the least.

Tired of yo-yo dieting and determined to find out what was keeping her from losing those last few pounds, Sylvia Tara, Ph.D., author of The Secret Life of Fat, spent five years researching fat and speaking with more than 50 world leaders in the field. The complicated answer involves genetics, bacteria, viruses, gender, age, hormones, and, yes, water weight.

Gaining a pound or two in just a few days is almost always the culprit of water weight, because fat takes more time to accumulate. Glycogen, the stored form of glucose, holds much more water than fat because of its biochemical makeup. Tara compares it to a checking account: something we reach for when our glucose levels are low. "It's not as readily available as glucose, the 'cash' in this scenario, but is nearby," says Tara. "Fat is a whole different, long chain molecule that follows a completely different pathway than fat. Fat can be compared to a certificate of deposit. You will burn it last. It holds a lot more energy, the most compact energy we have compared to glycogen."

Stored in the liver and muscle cells, glycogen is hydrated with three to four parts of water. (It's essentially hydrophilic or "water loving" and fat is hydrophobic or "water hating.") So, when you lose weight quickly, you lose glycogen stores, but that leaves the liver and muscles greedy and wont to hold onto any bit of glucose consumed and its accompanying water. Its a cascade of casualties: Bad bacteria in the gut can trigger inflammationin your skin, joints, brain, everywhereand send your bodys immune response into overdrive as it tries to rid the body of the bacteria. This can lead to insulin resistance, which can promote weight gain, says Hyman. The theory is that more good bacteria helps you process food more efficiently and reduces cravings. We are actually all born with very little bacteria in our guts, but through exposure that amount slowly increases. It varies wildly based on the type of birth (vaginal versus C-section), environment (city versus country), and diet and lifestyle factors. The average American today has a lot less bacteria than in the past, mostly because of a modern-day diet thats low in probiotics (live microorganisms, including bacteria) and prebiotics, the fibers that feed probiotics, says Josh Axe, a clinical nutritionist and the author of Eat Dirt. Top it all off with antibiotic and hand-sanitizer overuse, both of which wipe out vital gut flora, and you have an imbalanced gut that could be causing you to hold on to extra pounds.

Avoid processed foods and items high in sugar and carbohydrates, says Axe. Studies have shown that both sugar and artificial sweeteners can decrease good bacteria levels in the gut.

Fiber can lower blood sugar, reduce cholesterol, and promote weight loss, says Hyman. Whats more, fiber slows the rate at which food enters your bloodstream and increases the speed at which it exits your body through the digestive tract, keeping you fuller longer. While all fiber is good, here are some great prebiotic fiber sources: Jerusalem artichokes, onions, garlic, and leeks, as well as chia seeds, flaxseeds, and hemp seeds. Aim for 25 grams a day, if not more. Or consider a fiber supplement, says Hyman. Try: PGX, a blend of konjac root and seaweed fibers.

In one study, women who took probiotics for 24 weeks lost 51 percent more weight than those who didnt. Yogurt and kefir products contain live, active cultures, as do fermented foods like kimchi, miso, and sauerkraut. Its also a smart bet to take a probiotic supplement twice daily, says Hyman. Look for at least 25 billion live CFUs [colony-forming units] from diversified strains of bacteria, such as lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, he adds.

Theres a complex interplay between your hormones and your gut and how they affect one another, notes Raphael Kellman, M.D., an integrative and functional medicine physician and the author of Low thyroid function, in particular, can contribute to gut sluggishness.

Nurturing the beneficial creatures in your digestive tract may be the surest route to reaching your healthiest weight. Within a week of following a gut-friendly diet, you will notice a drop in cravings, promises Kellman. And you could be eating the same amount of calories as you were before, but you will lose weight. In fact, you may be able to eat even more.

Holly Willoughby looks awkward as giggling Loose Woman Nadia Sawalha comments on her weight loss – The Sun

HOLLY Willoughby looked shocked today as she overheard Nadia Sawalha make a comment about her weight loss.

The 36-year-old telly favourite was presenting This Morning when she and co-host Phillip Schofield linked over to the Loose Women studio however the panel seemingly didnt know they were already live.

As they laughed among themselves Nadia was heard exclaiming: Holly Willoughbys disappearing!

Both presenters looked stunned by Nadias on-air remark, with Phillip shouting at them, Cue, cue! as Holly stood there speechless and looking upset.

Ruth Langsford quickly tried to cover up this morning, telling them: You caught us by surprise there. We were talking about incontinence Phil!

And as her co-host continued to joke with the Loose Women, Holly stood silently and looked clearly concerned by Nadias slip, while Nadia was seen looking nervously off set.

Holly managed to regain her composure quickly and went back to her usual self, laughing at Phillips joke, but no doubt the remark will sting after she had been subject to many online comments about her weight.

Yesterday fans asked on her social media how she had lost weight so quickly and even moaned that she was losing her Willoughboobies.

Posting next to her recent snaps, admiring fans wrote Wish I knew how to lose that much weight so quickly, Always beautiful, Looking slender! and How is @hollywilloughby so naturally beautiful?.

But others were more forlorn about what they saw as the loss of Hollys Willoughboobies, with one leaving the cheeky comment: #WhereHaveHollysBoobsGone.

Another crestfallen fan added No more boobies :-(.

8 Tips to Overcome a Weight Loss Plateau

The journey to a healthier you isnt without its ups and downs, but not seeing consistent progress can be understandably frustrating. Have you hit a plateau in your weight loss? Are you no longer seeing a change to the numbers on the scale? If so, youre not alone. Most people trying to lose weight will experience periods of time where it seems no amount of dieting or exercise will melt those pounds away. For some, it lasts a few days. For others, a weight loss plateau can last weeks.

Hitting a plateau in your weight loss can be discouraging and frustrating, but it is not abnormal, and with a little extra effort, you can break through the plateau and begin losing weight again. Here are eight tips to help you overcome a weight loss plateau:

Evaluate your current nutrition and exercise habits. Has anything changed in your diet and fitness routine? What are your sources of calories on a daily basis? Dont forget to account for liquid caloriescalories you drink are still calories. Keep a daily food journal to record exactly what you are eating. Seeing it on paper will help you better evaluate whats going into your body and see where you may need to make changes.

Increase your protein intake. How much protein are you eating each day? Protein helps the body burn fat, so the more protein you consume, the faster your metabolism will be and the more effective your body will be at burning fat. Pay close attention to the fat content of the proteins you are eating and make low-fat protein choices whenever possible. Talk to a nutritionist to determine just how many grams of protein you should eat a day.

Make a change in your fitness routine. If you are doing the same workouts every day, your body will adapt to those exercises and become more efficient. We normally think of efficiency as a good thing, but when youre talking about burning fat, the more efficient your body is, the fewer calories it will require to expend the energy required to complete your workout, thus you wont lose fat as quickly. Consistency (working out at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week) and variety are key. Change things up. If you go for a walk one day, try biking or swimming the next. Do not allow your body the opportunity to adapt to your fitness routine, or youll only be frustrated.

Include strength and cardio in your workout routine. A cardio workout may burn more calories, but the more muscle your body has, the quicker it will burn those calories, so strength and aerobic exercise are equally important for weight loss. Be sure youre getting in at least two strength workouts every week.

Step up the intensity of your workouts. Increasing intensity as you become more fit is also important. As you lose weight and your body adjusts to regular exercise, you will need to increase the intensity of your workouts. Try to boost the intensity of your workout a little bit every week. For example, if you are going for a brisk 30 minute walk three days this week, next week, try walking for 5 minutes and jogging for 30 seconds to one minute, on and off for the duration of your workout.

Reduce your stress level. The body reacts to stress by storing fat. Incorporate a stress-reducing activity into your daily routine. A few ideas include yoga, meditation or prayer, gardening, taking your pets for a walk find something that relaxes you and make time for a few minutes of that activity every day.

Find support. Dont expect to take this journey alone. Finding support and encouragement from others who are on the same journey will be essential for your long-term success.

Have vision. Throughout your weight loss journey, its important for you to stay focused on your vision of a healthier, fitter, thinner you. Visualize your success and regularly remind yourself where you are headed and what your goals are.

Plateaus are frustrating, but hitting a plateau doesnt mean youre done losing weight for good. Put these small changes into place and youll begin seeing progress again in no time.

Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Cut Your Budget to the Bone to Get Out of Debt – HuffPost

So you have some debt that you need to pay off. If you listen to the advice of many get-out-of-debt gurus, you should pay it off as quickly and intensely as possible. They say you should never set foot in a restaurant, go on vacation, or do anything extra until the last credit card and student loan are paid off.

This seems like a good approach. If you can just cut out all your extra expenses and maybe bring in some additional income youll get out of debt much sooner, right?

In fact, becoming debt-free may be quite similar to getting to and maintaining a healthy weight. The intense, fast options may seem like a good idea, but they can actually have negative consequences.

Paying Off Debt & Yo-Yo Dieting

Intense weight loss strategies can often result in whats called a yo-yo diet. Its when you lose a bunch of weight quickly only to gain it back quickly after your intense efforts are done. Even Biggest Loser contestants arent immune to this problem.

If you cut calories dramatically for three weeks before a big event, sure youll lose weight. But you havent made sustainable changes that will help you stay healthy over the long term.

This is similar to getting out of debt. Sure, you can cut your budget to the absolute bare bones to pay off credit cards in a matter of months. But does this approach really help you build sustainable habits and a sustainable budget for the long run? Maybe not.

My husband and I struggled with this early on in our marriage. We wanted to pay off our student loans and car loan desperately. So for a few months, wed cut everything extra out of our budgets. No restaurants. No fun money. No nothing.

It would work for a bit, and wed make some progress. But eventually, wed get to the point where we felt so restricted, we just had to break free. And break free we did. Usually to the tune of a couple hundred dollars or more of unnecessary spending.

We went through this cycle for literally years until we learned to take a more measured approach to our debt diet. We still keep a close eye on our spending and try not to waste money. But we each have a monthly allowance for things like new clothes, our hobbies, and other personal items. And we have a date night fund so that we can enjoy each others company out of the house at least once a month.

This extra spending means were not paying off debt as quickly. But it also means that we avoid those splurges that used to throw us completely off track.

You Should Still Enjoy Life

Whats the main point of losing weight on a diet? Sure, you want to look good in a pair of jeans. But you also want to be able to move more freely, have more sustainable energy levels, and just enjoy life more.

Whats the main point of getting out of debt? Sure, you want to stop paying ridiculous interest rates on your credit cards. But you also want to free up money in your budget so that you have more options financially, so that you can enjoy life more.

So whats the point of dieting or paying off debt if youre miserable for months or years while youre doing it?

When youre dieting, you could cut out everything but salads with dry grilled chicken and probably lose weight very quickly. Or you could learn to make delicious, healthy meals that you love. And you could give yourself tiny splurges once in a while. You might see slower, steadier weight loss progress, but youll enjoy life while working towards your goal.

Again, youll see slower, steadier progress, but youll actually enjoy life while getting to that debt-free goal.

Your Approach Depends On Your Situation

Are there some times when a quick crash diet may be appropriate? Sure. Bodybuilders who are already in excellent shape will often cut calories dramatically right before an event. Theyre just taking their everyday discipline one step further for a few days or weeks.

Similarly, what if youre generally good at managing your money but just had an unexpected emergency a broken-down vehicle or a medical emergency, for instance that bloated your credit card debt? In this case, a few weeks or a couple months worth of cutting your budget to the bone to pay off the debt may make sense. Since youve already got good money management habits in place, youre unlikely to rebound into more unnecessary spending.

But if youre staring down a scale that says you need to lose 50 pounds? Research shows that slow and steady is the way to go.

Make smart swaps on things you eat every day. When youre trying to cut calories, its amazing how much progress you can make just by switching to a lower-calorie salad dressing or sprucing up your breakfast routine. The same goes for your finances. Try refinancing your mortgage or auto loan, renegotiating or even eliminating your cable bill, or revamping your insurance policies for painless ways to save money month after month.

Radical diet sees Eddie McGuire lose 15 kilos in three weeks – The New Daily

Footy fans were left shocked at the sight of a streamlined Eddie McGuire on Friday evening, but experts have warned that the crash diet that saw him lose 15 kilos in three weeks can be very dangerous.

McGuire has dropped the weight after following Dr Shuquan Lius The 101 Wellbeing Program, which involves drastic fasting, cupping and acupuncture.

It claims to help patients kick start their journey to achieving and maintaining a healthy and balanced body and is the same plan Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull followed in 2011. He reportedly lost 14kg doing so.

The Collingwood president did not eat for two weeks, drinking three cups of Chinese herbal tea and unlimited water and black tea to get through each day.

In his third week, he told the Herald Sun he was allowed to have half a cucumber before 1pm and 50 grams of chicken each day and, amazingly, that he never felt hungry during the radical three-week detox.

I feel great. I did not feel tired at any stage, he said.

Brisbane-based Tracie Connor, an accredited nutritionist and an expert in sustainable weight loss, said the program came with several health risks.

Eliminating food for such a long time its definitely not suited to everyone and poses risks, she told The New Daily.

If people have a toxic diet, involving junk food, and then stop eating suddenly, it can cause headaches, pain, nausea, sleep loss the list goes on.

Its fantastic that it worked for both of them [McGuire and Turnbull] but fasting only suits a minority of people.

Ms Connor urged anyone considering the program on their own to seek help from a registered practitioner because of the issues that can arise.

It [the program] can be very dangerous, especially if someone does this with no guidance, she said.

People must get help from a trained practitioner before they start this and its not just about supplying tea and then thats it. There needs to be regular check-ups.

Symptoms can arise at any moment, too, so a practitioner should be on call 24-7, with check-ups every second or third day.

Associate Professor Leonie Heilbronn, an expert in weight loss and fasting from the University of Adelaide, said the program simply wasnt healthy.

If you have an underlying health condition, you can definitely get yourself in trouble [doing this], she told The New Daily.

Its huge [weight loss by McGuire] but by not eating for such a long period, you will drop a lot of water weight. That is put back on quickly when you start eating again.

The program isnt cheap, with News Corp reporting in 2015 it cost between $4000 and $9000.

It runs for 101 days hence the name but many patients do not finish the program.

Patients are told theywill lose between five and eight kilos in the first two weeks of the program.

They are also told that longer term, you can expect to notice an overall improvement in your health, greater ease in maintaining your weight, a better quality of life, lower stress levels and an ability to function at a high level without relying on medication.

Associate Professor Heilbronn said that patients would need to be very careful or they would quickly put on most of the weight lost.

The hormones released from your gut that tell your brain that you are full they are [confused]. Your hunger drive becomes very strong after a diet like this, she said.

Ms Connor said the challenge was far from over once finishing the program.

Statistically, most crash diets, after six to 12 months, most people regain half of the weight they have lost, if not more, she said.

After fasting for that long, people need to gradually introduce food and make good choices.

McGuire acknowledged that would be a battle, saying the next stage for me is to get myself physically fit again and keep the discipline up and make sure I dont plonk it [weight] back on.
