Change your life, by decluttering - really?
Well, yes - it's true - allow me to explain...
If you were asked to list 10 life changing events, I'm pretty sure that decluttering won't have featured on it.
Items like these: -
...will come to mind way beforesorting out the clutter you may have.
BUT..
Decluttering - done right - really and truly can change your life.
In fact, it can produce a fundamental shift in the way we think about our homes and our lives - and it can be incredibly empowering.
Let's go into it a little deeper...
Unfortunately, decluttering in a way that makes real, fundamental changes to your life, in a way that sticks - is not a quick fix at all.
But it doesn't have to be hard either!
Let me give you an analogy: -
When you decide to diet, you want to lose weight quickly and easily. Your weight is your clutter. You may reduce the food you eat and therefore eat less calories each day. You go through weeks of restrictions and yes, you find that you lose some weight - but chances are it will pile back on as soon as you start to live your life as normal again. Unless you make changes that work with how you live, those changes won't last and won't fulfil you.
Decluttering tends to be the same.
You want to lose the excess "stuff", so you spend a few days/weeks going through your home finding anything and everything to get rid of. However, after all that you still find you haven't fundamentally changed anything. You're either left with less than you want, or you end up creating new piles of stuff over the months that follow and the pattern starts again.
The 'weight' from both situations goes for a while - but usually comes back.
The reason? - you've made changes that make a visible difference, but you haven't gone deeper. You haven't looked at the fundamentals that will ensure those changes last.
Life changing?
I think not.
As with most effective answers - it's simple really.
To change your life in a way that lasts, you need to work out what you want you're really trying to achieve and work from there.
You want to go deeper than the superficial and get to grips with making your home (and life) the way you want it to be.
Instead of starting with a bin bag ready to fill, start with a pen and paper instead.
To do this, simply follow these 5 easy steps: -
THIS IS YOUR CLUTTER. PLAIN AND SIMPLE.
The rest? - well - that's all the stuff that helps you live your life - and that should all stay.
Start with what you really want to do with your life, and what your goals are, and you will much more easily be able to declutter that which doesn't help you get there.
All achieved by decluttering the right way.

No 1- Food diary
Nowadays there are so many quick fixes and fad diets, which yes will help you lose weight but will you maintain it???
90% of the time the answer is NO! See if we lose a lot of weight quickly we lose some very important and essential lean tissue (muscle), which controls our metabolic rate (rate in which we burn calories). Weight regained after the diet could be fat tissue which is a lot lazier. For every 1lb of lean tissue we burn 50 calories at rest but for every 1lb of fat we only burn 4 calories. So it is pretty lazy!!
Even if you dont over-eat you could regain weight anyway because of the greater the proportion of lazy fat tissue in your body, because your metabolism is slowed and because lost fluid will replace itself.
The only way to maintain weight loss and adapt and keep a healthy lifestyle is a slow and steady weight loss, and take baby step with changing things in your diet, a drastic exclusion of too many things will deffo set you up for failure.
Realistically we can only lose about 1-2lb of actual fat per week, the rest is fluid. Maybe the first few weeks if you have a lot to lose you might lose more but that will stabilise after a few weeks.
A very useful tool if your goal is weight loss would be to record a food diary. Maybe 5-7 days and just have a sheet of paper with you, it doesnt have to be anything fancy!
Record everything from water consumption, a lot of uncounted calories can be consumed in liquid form so record all drinks, if you have sugar in your teas/coffees, portion size of each meal and snack, how you are feeling if you reach for that sugary treat. Some people dont realize it but our emotions play a lot in our eating habits.
If we are feeling tired or down or had a bad day we tend to reach for sugary things kind of like a reward to cheer yourself up, so just put a little note on it of how you were feeling and see if there is a pattern there.
Times in which we are eating at which is also very important .. We all know how important having our breakfast is dont we? Its so very very important.
Metabolism needs to be kicked right in the butt first thing It slows down as the day goes on and by evening/night it can be very slow so eating huge portions and junk food at them times will just store as unwanted fat. So put times on your diary too.
Then when the 5-7 days are up have a read through it yourself and check for things like, did I have breakfast today?, did I snack in between meals, have I drink enough water? Have I had too much sugar in my tea/coffee (if you put the same quantity of sugar you usually put in tea/coffee into a container and at the end of the week see how full that container is or add up the tea spoons, will you be shocked??)
FYI: As an adult our recommended allowance of added sugar PER DAY IS 5 TEA SPOONS. So do the math and see how you go.
Am I getting enough of all food groups? ( fruits, meats, veggies, dairy, grains), is my diet varied?, am I following my metabolism, ie. eating a well-balanced breakfast, mid-morning snack, well balanced lunch, mid afternoon snack, and dinner. Little and often is key. This well help stabilize blood sugar levels and prevent sugar impulses.
Am I drinking enough H20?! People can suffer from mild dehydration and not even know it, if you drink a lot of tea/coffee you are at risk of mild dehydration as tea/coffee are diuretics. What this means is they can make you want to wee a lot which so you will lose a lot of fluid that needs to be replaced, so youll feel thirsty again and probably reach for more tea/coffee and then it will just do a full circle!
Your energy levels will drop also and if you train your muscles could cramp due to lack of hydration. A little tip on how to work out your recommended water intake would be to multiply your weight in kg by 0.033. This would have to be increased with activity level.
Also IF ITS NOT IN IT WONT GO IN! Everyone knows if the bad stuff isnt in the presses you cant put them in your mouth!!! So dont buy them in your weekly shopping. Simples!

I get that question all the time. Frustrated folks looking to lose some weight and hoping to improve their health express their wish that they could lose weight as quickly as they gain it.
Theres a standard reply to that question, but its not really a scientifically sound explanation, nor does it satisfy most people frustrated by their slow weight loss progress. Maybe youve said it yourself, or somebody has said it to you.
You didnt gain it overnight and you cant expect to lose it overnight.
Is that supposed to make you feel better? I dont think its an adequate answer; its a platitude. Its a quick and easy explanation that isnt worth the effort it takes to mutter it. Here is the real reason why weight gain is fast and weight loss is slow.
Your fat cells shrink. You dont actually lose them. In fact, you have on averagebetween 10 to 30 billion fat cells. The amount of fat cells you have wasset during adolescence and levels off into adulthood. If you were very overweight as a child, you will have twice as many fat cells as another adult who wasntan overweight child.
So losing weight isnt losing fat cells. Its shrinking them, but they dont burn up and go away. They stick around looking for their chance to return to their lovely full state or grow even larger. Its theorized that those fat cells think its their duty to plump up again and that the body thinks its necessary for survival.
The body thinks its survival has been threatened by disapearingfood sources. When food once again becomes available (you stop trying to lose weight and go back to former eating and exercising habits) it tries to get back to what it considers its normal state. Its trying totake action to save your (and its) life.
Its more than just a matter of hungry fat cells. Your body adjusted to what it thought was a famine by becoming more efficient with its use of fuel. It is burning fewer calories at rest, so its now become easier to create a calorie excess which goes directly into refilling those fat cells.

Even on a sensible diet, your body sheds pounds reluctantly. David Kessler, M.D., is the former U.S. Food and Drug Administration commissioner. He and his team of researchers at the University of California at San Francisco and Yale University researched weight cycling. Kessler says overeating may not be your fault.
According to Kessler and his research team some people have overactive neural circuitry or a drive to clean the plate and the more palatable the food, the stronger the drive. Its less about willpower and more about the hold conditioning has over an individual.Its biological, not genetic, and difficult to resist. Kessler estimates that 50 percent of obese people and 30 percent of overweight people are conditioned hypereaters.
Your body fights your weight loss efforts and throws its full support into helping you gain weight. That might lead you to ask, why bother to lose weight when my body fights it? The answer is personal. If your weight is getting in the way of doing the things you love or making you sick, its worth it.
If your weight is the result of unhealthy habits, work on making changes to your habits to make them healthier. This will result in weight loss, and more importantly, help you to learn skills that are necessary to maintain your lower and healthier weight.

In September last yearthe 37-year-old quithis old, "lazy" lifestyle fuelled byfast food to change his lifefor good. Today he's educating friends and work colleagues about health and fitness.
"I was addicted to food," Ofa says. "I lovedfast food takeaways. I'd eat them three times a day.The yummierthe food, the more I'd eat. That's the problem with our culture,Tongansjust love food."

Ofa holds the pants that he wore when he tipped the scale at 220kg.
In a normal day before hislifestyle change, Ofa would eat 20 chicken bites for breakfast, drink a 1.5L bottle of fizzyat lunch and have afast food family feast for dinner.
With the weight came numerous health problems. He had diabetes,gout,kidney stones, high blood pressure,headaches and insomnia.
He took six pills a day to treat his conditions, but now all of those problems are gone. "I feel totally different."

He spends more than three hours in the gym every day, often visiting twice.
At 17yearsold hewas awarded a rugby scholarship and movedfrom Tonga to New Zealand to play first XV rugby.
Shortly after the move he suffered aspinal cord injury while playing,bringing a halt to his active lifestyle. He stopped working out and "started eating".
In recent years he has tried a number of times to "get motivated", but after a few weeks of eating healthy he would return to his old ways. "But this time was different.I wanted to change my life."

Ofa has beat his fast food addict thanks to his strong mindset.
Throughout his journey a lot of factorshave given himthe strength and willpower to make alasting change.
From his family who help to cook healthy food, to his work mates who compliment him and hisidolDwayne Johnsonwho he aspires to.
"The one motivation that Idon't talk much about is the power of prayer. Ibelieve in God...I prayed for the strength to resist the temptation offast food andfor the the energy to go back to the gym after Ifinishwork.

He is now inspiring friends to join the gym and gets a kick out of showing them the ropes.
"But at the end of the dayit camedown to me, whether I wanted to change or not. That was the main thing, Iwanted to change.
"Now someone can eat KFC right next to meand it doesn't bother me. I'll eat an orange instead."
A typical workday routine sees him wake at 7am, and eat oats and fruit for breakfast. After dropping his children off at schoolhe hits the gym for three hours before starting work at midday.Most nights he'll head back to the gym after work at 10pm.
During the day he'll eat up to 16 boiled eggs, a roast chicken and plenty of fresh fruit.
"Ifind it hard when people ask me what my goal weight is. Idon't have one, it was never about the weight on the scale. Iexercise because it'swhat Ilove.
"Many people ask me when my cheat day is and Isay to them 'Idon't have a cheat day or a cheat meal'. This is a lifestyle change, Idon't want to eat bad.
"I think weight loss is just a good side effect of having a good lifestyle."
A lot of people ask Ofa for the secret to his rapid weight loss. In return, he asks them to join him at hisgym, Anytime Fitness,so he can show them his workout routine.He's now motivated a number of work colleaguesto join the gym.
But in total honesty he says the gym isn't his secret, it'shis mindset.
"I think the mostimportant thing is to be your own inspiration. People wait for something else or someone else to inspire them to take that first step.
"Iam my own inspiration. I did it. I am my own hero. Once you become your own inspirationit comes from within you."
Throughout his lifestyle journey Ofa hasdone a lot of reading and research to learn about "theright food to eat to keepfull andwhat exercise to do to loseweight faster".
