SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) You may have seen the ads on the internetvinegar as a super food to shed pounds quickly or turmeric to cleanse and detox your body.
The Kardashians have reportedly done it, and so has actress and healthy lifestyle guru Gwyneth Paltrow. We are talking about the apple cider vinegar diet making a splash on the internet.
Testimonials brag about following the diet, incorporating the cloudy potion and watching the pounds melt away. But are these alternative facts or the real deal?
Recent reports have shown that regular consumption of apple cider vinegar can lead to digestive health improvement, reduce bloating, increase absorption of vitamins and mineral from food, as well as more balanced PH levels within the body, saidBen Lazzarini, who is with Whole Foods Market.
We have a wide variety, ranging from 16-ounce on the go beverages to somebody who wants to incorporate into more of a daily routine,Lazzarini said.
I think that every year there is a new thing, said Leah Groppo, who is a dietician and diabetes educator at Stanford.
If you go out to eat at a restaurant, you choose a really large burrito. You pull your vinegar out of your purse and you put it on top of that burrito. Is that really going to offset the 150 grams of carbohydrates that youre eating? No, its really not. Groppo added.
Yet on the internet, countless posts cite studies about the wonders of the apple cider.
Reports suggest national shows and news networks have all agreed. Some refer to major research universities including Stanford.
Groppo says she doesnt know of any conclusive studies and adds if you are reading anything on the internet, pay attention to the fine print.
If you look at the vinegar detox diet, it is looking at 650 calories a day, Groppo said. And so on average, people are consuming upwards of 1,800, maybe to lose weight 1,500 caloriesbut 600 calories is significantly lower. Adding vinegar on top of that, if you attribute it to the vinegar, it is the calories that you are intaking.
Groppo says vinegar is not a bad thing, and putting it into your diet can have some benefits.
She says that is true of other ingredients like turmeric to help with inflammation.
Theres really not one big thing that you can add to your food thats going to be the ah-ha moment that your body is going to suddenly turn into this fat-burning, weight-loss machine before you, Groppo said.
Groppo says although it may not be what some people want to hear, managing your weight is still focusing on the basics.
And what about all of those celebrities and their claims about diets and cleanses doing the body good?
Celebrities probably have personal chefs, dieticians, people to encourage them, they have trainers. Its a different ballgame than what most people are in in this world, Groppo said.
Also popular right now are cleanses,a prescription of elixirs that are supposed to detox your body and make it clean again.
Once again, when it comes to your health, there is no quick fix or special potion or fad diet that will reset your body and ultimately make you healthier.

The reason this diet provides rapid weight loss is because it is a low calorie plan and it is a type of intermittent fasting.

At her heaviest, Lisa Jackson was drinking six cans of coke a day.
This left Lisa tipping the scale at 24st and a dress size of 24. Her body mass index was 53.2 double the healthy weight range.
The 29-year-old said the initial weight gain began in 2007 when she found herself getting too comfortable in her new relationship.
By 2013, Lisa had doubled her weight after spending days eating chip buttys, crisps, chocolate and pasta or pizza.

In February that year, Lisa saw a picture of her that would make her change her lifestyle. Standing next to a slim friend, she couldnt believe how large she was.
Lisa began to eat fruit and yoghurt for breakfast, tuna for lunch and chicken breast with sweet potato for dinner.

We all know it seems to be easier for men to lose weight than women. But that's not why Top Chef head judge Tom Colicchio says he usually loses weight when taping a new season, whereas host Padma Lakshmi tends to gain a few pounds (as much as 17 during Season 4all that deep-dish pizza in Chicago!).
She eats more than I do on the set because she does the quickfire challenges and the eliminations and I only do the eliminations, Tom explained in a recent PEOPLE interview. I actually tend to lose weight believe it or not.
While the show is filming, Tom's schedule is more relaxed than when he's at home, allowing him to squeeze in more exercise, he added. I work every other day so I have more time to workout then I do when Im home, he said. So I usually maintain my weight or sometimes lose weight.
Padma, who claims she consumes thousands of calories a day while taping Top Chef, resorts to her go-to cleanse to help keep extra pounds at bayher "Cranberry Drano." Despite what the diet industry is telling you, your weight isnt an accurate measure of health, according to executive director for the Eating Disorder Support Network of Alberta Sue Huff.
Ahead of International No Diet Day on May 6, Huff explained weight and health are often confused with each other.
They arent the same thing, Huff said. People can be healthy at all sizes.
She said most people aren't aware of the risks associated with dieting or fast weight loss.
Trying to lose a lot of weight quickly can turn on an eating disorder in people who are genetically predisposed, she said.
Dieting can also be harmful to the brain, according to Calgary psychologist Dr. Angela Grace.
Any time there is restrictive dieting, youre denying the body nutrients to survive and thrive, she said. We all need food but its more important to focus on the nutrients youre putting into the body, not what youre taking away from (it).
She encouraged people who want to lose weight to find ways to nourish their bodies instead of restricting their intake.
We have a multi-billion dollar diet industry that preys on peoples low self-esteem, on their body-esteem, and promoting that thin equals health, Grace said.
Look at restoring overall health and wellbeing for your whole life not just narrowing it down to thinness.

‘The Biggest Loser’ Creator Is Making Another Weight-Loss Show – SELF
The Biggest Loser has been a popular show for years, but it faced some serious backlash last year after The New York Times profiled an explosive study that revealed the contestants' weight loss is often unsustainable and can actually harm their metabolisms. Now, The Biggest Loser creator J.D. Roth is working on a new show, The Big Fat Truth , in an attempt to find out why so many of his former stars regain the weightand to help six of them who will appear on the show lose it again. (Roth will also try to help others lose weight as well.)
In a clip for the show obtained by People , Roth acknowledges the criticism around The Biggest Loser . The New York Times published an article telling everyone that, You cant get away from a basic biological realityas long as you are below your initial weight, your body is going to try to get you back. Could this really be true? How do you get lucky enough to get a lottery ticket to be on The Biggest Loser , lose all the weight, end up on the cover of People magazine, and then gain it all back? he says. So is it your metabolism? Or is it your choices?
The article Roth references cited a study published in the journal Obesity in 2016, in which researchers tracked contestants who participated in the shows eighth season, which aired in 2009. Scientists found that within six years, 13 of the 14 contestants studied regained all the weight theyd lostand four are heavier than they were before the show started. Researchers determined that, among other reasons, their metabolisms slowed after the show and stayed that way.
Contestants also said they felt hungry all of the time , which scientists found was because they had lower levels of leptin, a hormone that helps control hunger. Contestants had very low leptin levels at the end of the show, and as they regained weight after the show, their leptin levels went upbut they stopped at about half of what they were beforeleading to constant feelings of hunger.
While Roth doesn't reveal how he helps people lose weight on his new show, he implies that it's a similar method to how they lost it on The Biggest Loser . Fatima Cody Stanford, M.D., M.P.H., M.P.A., instructor of medicine and pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and obesity medicine physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, tells SELF that the show's methods revolve around extreme behavioral changes that are not sustainable over the long term, including exercise that is well beyond what most normal people can commit to. Its almost taking them outside reality, Stanford says.
But Roth says that his weight-loss methods work, noting that within 10 days of working with former contestants for this new show, they saw "considerable weight loss," as well as significant decreases in insulin levels and bad cholesterol levels. This series is proof that the mind is the gateway to transforming the body," he says. Roth also says in a press clip for the show that he gives people the tools to transform their livesbut its up to them to follow through.
Weight loss is incredibly complicatedthat can't be overstated. As this entire debate shows, if you'd like to lose weight, it's not just about what you eat and how you exercise. There are many factors in play, like sleep and stress , and even some that fall outside of people's control, like your hormonal fluctuations, effects of medications you're taking, and any health conditions you may have.
Beyond all of that, the brain has a set point for weight that it likes to maintainand it fights hard to keep someone at that weight, Stanford says. When we take the body outside that realm, the brain does whatever it can to get back to that set point where it feels comfortable, she explains. Its very similar to how it defends your body temperature when you have a fever. This process can involve a slowed metabolism .
Bartolome Burguera, M.D., Ph.D., director of Obesity Programs at Cleveland Clinic and executive medical director of the National Diabetes & Obesity Research Institute ( NDORI ), tells SELF that the rate at which people lose weight also factors into this dynamic. When you lose weight quickly, your brain doesn't have time to catch up and still wants you to try to maintain your old weight, he explains. "Unless you lose weight slowly, your brain is going to want you to go back," he says. "The only way to be successful is by changing your lifestyle in a way that you lose weight slowly and it doesn't set off too many alarms in your brain."
That's part of the reason why, if weight loss is a goal of yours, experts recommend making tiny tweaks to your lifestyle for sustainable changes, rather than overwhelming yourself by trying to lose a lot of weight ASAP. Being overly restrictive in an effort to lose weight will likely lead to bingeing at some point, which is mentally and physically taxing enough on its own. But it can also get you into a cycle of yo-yo dieting , or repeatedly gaining and losing a lot of weight. Over time, yo-yo dieting can boost your risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and other health issues.
Avoiding those kinds of drastic changes is safer physically, but it's also just a kinder way to treat your body and mind instead of putting yourself through absolute misery.
If you're trying to lose weight, much of that progress will come down to building healthier habits. Let's be real: Breaking old habits and building new ones is hard . For example, people often turn to emotional eating and alcohol when stressed, Peter LePort, M.D., medical director of MemorialCare Center for Obesity at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center, tells SELF.
Making long-lasting changes often comes down to hammering out specific goals that will help you keep working toward progress. That's partly why The Biggest Loser is so successful at helping people lose the weight at first, LePort says. There's a cash prize for whoever loses the highest percentage of weight, which can be motivational. But when the contestants are no longer motivated to lose weight for money, they can regain it if they don't have another goal, LePort says.
Saleh Aldasouqi , M.D., Chief of the Division of Endocrinology at Michigan State University, agrees that mindset is "very important" in the weight loss process. He cites an example of a patient with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease who repeatedly struggled to lose weight but failed until she read about fatty liver disease and its potential impact. "That was the click," he tells SELF. "Doctors should always look for what they think clicks and is important for the patient."And if you don't have a doctor or registered dietitian guiding you, it's about figuring out your own intrinsic motivation that won't just fade away when things get hard, then making changes from there. (If you've ever struggled with an eating disorder, be sure to consult your doctor before changing your eating or exercise habits.)
Weight loss isn't a one size fits all approach, Stanford sayssome people do well with modifications in diet and exercise, while others may need medications or weight loss surgery. And, while a change in mindset is necessary and helpful, losing weight and keeping it off ultimately involve more than that.
Deciding to lose weight is an incredibly personal process. What works for someone else might not work for you, and vice versa. But if it happens to be a goal of yours, there are healthy ways to do itand that's really what's most important. LePort says some people can change their exercise and diet habits and keep weight off with various approaches, but it's most likely to happen if you go about it with methods that are safe, realistic, and actually doable for you. "It's so important to lose weight in a way thats healthy and you can sustain that effort long-term," Burguera says.
If youve lost a significant amount of weight and are struggling to keep it off, Stanford recommends seeking the help of a doctor who specializes in weight management. They can help you decide the best course of action from there.

Losing weight is hard when it seems like youll spend every day of the rest of your life deprived, poking at oatmeal and steamed broccoli. So, in the past few years, fasting diets have become popular. You eat very little one day, sure, but the next day you can eat all the burritos and burgers you desire. Then, not only do you lose weight more quickly, it makes it psychologically easy to hold on in the long run.
This makes intuitive sense. But a new study published today in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine suggests this might not be the case for a specific type of fasting diet called alternate-day fasting. The researchers randomly assigned 100 obese participants to either fast every other day, go on a more traditional diet, or do nothing at all. After a year, the people in the fasting group didnt lose more weight, or have more health benefits, compared to the normal weight-loss group and more people dropped out of the fasting group.

That doesnt mean that alternate-day fasting doesnt work, says study co-author Krista Varady, a professor of nutrition at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. It just means that its not necessarily much more effective than normal dieting. Varady has led the research on alternate-day fasting, and has even written a book promoting it. (This information is included in the papers conflict of interest disclosure.) Her previous studies suggested that this regimen helped people lose weight more quickly, was easier to stick to (once you got over the first two weeks, which are challenging), and had good effects for other health indicators like cholesterol. But those studies only followed the participants for two or three months. Todays study is the first long-term and randomized study weve had on alternate-day fasting, following participants for an entire year. Some people might be disappointed if youre pro-intermittent fasting, but its just exciting to have this type of high-quality data out there, says Grant Tinsley, a Texas Tech University professor who has studied intermittent fasting and was not involved in the study.
For todays study, the people in the alternate-day fasting group were told to eat about 25 percent of their normal daily calories on their fast days and 125 percent on their feast days. The people in the normal dieting group just cut about 25 percent of their calories every day. Nobody was allowed to join a gym. At the end of the year, both groups had lost about 6 percent of their body weight, and there werent a lot of differences when it came to things like cholesterol, insulin resistance, and blood pressure.
When it comes to the lack of other health benefits, Tinsley says this may be because alternate-day fasting is not exactly a true fasting diet. Individuals usually take their one meal in the middle of the day, so that breaks up the fasting period in half, whereas some other programs have the goal of prolonging that fasting period because of the various metabolic changes, he says. In some ways, its really just a very low-calorie intake one day, so its possible that could play a role.
Its important to note that about 30 people dropped out of the study, which always skews the data, especially when there are only 100 people to begin with. Plus, more people dropped out of the alternate-day fasting group, and the people who remained had trouble sticking to instructions. I was pretty shocked to find out that people had a harder time sticking to alternate-day fasting than they did daily calorie restriction, says Varady. They were eating more calories than prescribed on the fast day and also eating less calories than prescribed on the feast days than what we thought, whereas daily calorie restriction was pretty good at sticking to their calorie goals.
This means that, in the end, the fasting and normal dieting groups ended up eating much more similar amounts of food. It also suggests that sticking to the diet is challenging in the long run. Jason Fung, a doctor who runs an intermittent fasting clinic and was not involved in the study, says that trying to restrict to 500 calories might be harder than not eating at all. People have to understand that if you start eating, youre going to want to continue eating, he says. Its like when you have to go to the bathroom when you start peeing you gotta pee out the whole thing and it takes a lot of willpower to stop. In his clinic, he frequently counsels people to fast for an entire day or more and just plan their schedule around that, instead of rummaging in the cupboards and trying to control themselves. He also works to create more individualized plans, though he acknowledges that there are high dropout rates there, too.
Fasting research has only picked up in the past couple of decades, so we still dont know a lot about why some people might find it easier than others. Ultimately, says Fung, the data suggests that both calorie restriction and fasting are viable options for weight loss.
Ive done alternate-day fasting for years, on and off, along with regular dieting. I always liked the idea of fasting more, especially since Im not a snacker and have always had erratic eating patterns anyway. I liked not feeling deprived all the time, and knowing I could have a proper meal in 12 hours helped with the fast days. But over time, it became too hard to stick to.
For now, Fung says, fastings effectiveness might depend on preference. I dont think that theres one approach that really works for everybody and you really have to find what people like, some people like chocolate and some people like vanilla, you cant say one is wrong and ones right, he adds. Its a personal thing, but in a randomized trial like this, youre taking people and saying you are getting chocolate, do you like it? and might be shoehorning them into a dietary method which doesnt work.
Fung has a point: it really is incredibly easy to go over the fast day allotment, which for someone of my size is 500 calories basically two Clif bars. But I also run and just cant go entire days without eating. The schedule was hard on my social schedule, since people unfortunately dont invite you out to dinner on neatly alternating days.
Alternate-day fasting isnt the only type of fasting diet, Tinsley, the Texas Tech professor, points out. Theres the 5:2 diet, where you fast for only two days a week, or various types of intermittent fasting where you only eat within a certain time interval. Theres even a fasting-mimicking diet where you fast for five days a month thats been shown to have good results, though that version of fasting hasnt been used enough to have a lot to compare it to. Varady adds that todays results shouldnt be generalized too broadly. Next, her team is doing research on the effects of alternate-day fasting on diabetics.
In the end, the diet made me too irritable on my fast days and even the promise of a large meal in the future didnt make me less prone to yelling at everyone. I still go back to ADF every so often, but Ive become more realistic about what I can handle.
