Reporter’s notebook: What I learned about my body after being in a metabolic chamber – ABC News
ABC News' Mara Schiavocampo shared her experiences after spending a day inside a metabolic chamber at Mount Sinai St. Lukes Hospital in New York City. Schiavocampo's journey, which aired on "Good Morning America," was the first time that TV cameras were allowed to peek into a metabolic chamber, which is used to monitor your total energy expenditure and better understand how your body uses energy in everyday tasks such as resting, eating and exercising.
Three weeks ago I spent an entire day inside a vacuum-sealed metabolic chamber at Mount Sinai St. Lukes Hospital in New York; 23-hours trapped inside a room the size of a prison cell. Why? Its the most cutting edge way to measure how your body burns calories, and just might provide a glimpse into the future of weight management. The room has previously only been available for research purposes, and Im one of the first people to ever use it commercially.
After analyzing the data for weeks, I finally got the results. As someone who spends a lot of time reading about health and wellness, I wasnt expecting to learn much. Instead, I was shocked by the results. Heres what I learned about the way I burn energy:
The chamber measures oxygen consumption and CO2 production to provide the most accurate measure of calorie burn available today. So we also decided to compare the results from the chamber with the estimates provided by online calculators and fitness trackers. Unfortunately, those weight loss tech tools often missed the mark. Here are some of my findings from the metabolic chamber compared to what was calculated with the other gadgets I have used.
The bottom line: The chamber reminded me how different we all are, which is why broad weight loss plans often dont work for many people. But it also reaffirmed my belief in focusing on overall health, as opposed to getting caught up in numbers, and my commitment to honoring my body with the joy of fitness and a diet of mostly whole, unprocessed foods.

Deniz Eke: Looking After Yourself Means That You Respect Yourself – Huffington Post
This interview is part of the Real Talk Real Women interview series, where we bring you the life-changing, heart-warming and inspirational stories behind the most successful women in health and fitness. Make sure to follow us on Instagram for the latest interviews! For this installment, we are joined by Deniz Eke.
Lets start off with a general introduction. How would you describe yourself, what are you all about and how did you get involved in health and fitness?
I was working in sports media. I presented the news and worked as a reporter but sports has always been in my life. And sports resulted in one of the happiest moments of my life. I was going to the gym from time to time and lifted weights.
I was unemployed for some time. I dedicated myself to sports more during that period. And my progress made me happier. Yes, I realised that was the place where I belonged. I did not return to my media work and started to compete instead. Now, I am an IFBB athlete.
Where does your motivation come from?
My ambition for winning is what triggers my motivation. I constantly want to make myself better. My trainer is an important factor. His name is Ali Emre who is also an IFBB athlete and classic bodybuilder Europe and World Champion. He is an incredible man that motivates me.
As you decided to make a career out of your passion - what were your biggest stumbling blocks along the way?
The sport is still fairly uncommon in my country which at times can be a challenge. The fitness market here is not developed yet. There is very little investment in athletes. I always had to work hard in order to pay for my competitions. And I am still working.
Whats your perspective on the importance of self-care?
Looking after yourself means that you respect yourself. In other words, looking after yourself is some kind of taking care of your own environment. A motivated person who is and thinks positively, looks after him or herself. Not only physically but also mentally.
What are some of the biggest misconceptions about women lifting weight?
Women think that they will become Arnold a month into lifting weights, which is completely wrong. They abstain from weight lifting and always complain about not getting into shape. Women think that their appearance will be deformed immediately and abstain from doing sports or chose the wrong training methods, such as doing cardio for 2 hours! It will never be like you think, believe me.
Deniz Eke
Many young women who want to lose weight believe that not eating is the way to do it, without realising the consequences of that kind of behavior.
Why do you think this is and whats your perspective on educating society on healthy nutrition habits?
Those wrong ideas come from lack of research. Or wrong dietary suggestions. All facts can be obtained as a result of curiosity and research. When women think of losing weight quickly, they use information obtained without effort; for example the advice of friends. They do not question anything. I believe this is not related to education but the person must question the situation that he/she is experiencing.
What are the most unexpected lessons youve learned on your health and fitness journey this far?
The biggest lesson I have ever learned is that there is only one right, so make sure you choose who you listen to and take advice from carefully.
What do you do to maintain balance in your life?
I am familiar with discipline and maintaining order. This is not something new to me. I am only restricted by time but otherwise I feel perfectly balanced. I have a very busy schedule and thus I live like a soldier. This allows me to keep things in balance.
How do you stay productive?
I like to win. I breathe thanks to my objectives. Some women become happy by going on vacation or shopping. I become happy by setting goals and achieving them. Struggling keeps me strong. I like living like I am in an adventure. And I get a sense of winning from others.
Can you give a breakdown of your current diet, training and supplementation regimen and the thinking behind it?
This depends on the period but generally my diet is based on a high carbohydrate and protein system. I take 2 grams of protein and 6 grams of carbohydrate per kilogram of bodyweight. I eat all sorts of vegetables and fruits. My diet has various elements and it is joyful.
I have an intensive training schedule without limiting myself. I am a lucky athlete as my metabolism is fast and I do not get fat. Walnut and hazelnut are fat sources that I like. Black rice is my favourite.
If you could only choose one thing, what would you tell your younger self?
When I fell in love, I wasted a lot of my time for nothing. I'd definitely say not to spend your time for nothing.
What are your goals for 2017?
I saw the semi finals in Europe last year. My biggest goal for this year is to rank higher. I worked so much and I believe I deserve this!
Where can people go to learn more about you online?
You can stay up to date by following me on Instagram.

Healthy Living With TAU: Done with glucose fluctuations! Solutions to successful and sustainable weight loss – The Suburban Newspaper (blog)
Nicer weather has finally arrived. The sun is starting to warm the atmosphere. Bikini season is fast approaching, and with it, the desire to leave behind the few extra pounds accumulated during the winter. To reach the goal, we think of following a diet. However, with a diet that starves the body, the weight loss will certainly be fast, but it will be muscles melting and a vital loss of water for the body. It is important to know that losing weight this way doesnt necessarily mean fat will be lost. This method is neither healthy nor durable, and the pounds lost with difficulty will be regained quickly.
To lose weight in a healthy way, its necessary to lose fat while maintaining the muscle mass. Easier said than done! Concretely, how can it be done? The accumulation of fat in the cells is mainly caused by blood sugar level imbalances (glycaemia). When glycaemia increases, insulin, a hormone, is secreted. This hormone normalizes sugar levels but also favors fat storage in the body, mainly around the waist. Cravings are also caused by glucose fluctuations.
There are two nutrients that stabilize glycaemia:
- Proteins: they allow maintaining the muscle mass, regulate the appetite and limit cravings in between meals.
- Soluble fibers: while absorbing the liquids, they slow down sugar absorption and increase the feeling of fullness. These factors are very important to win the battle against extra pounds.
These two key nutrients for a healthy weight loss are found in my favourite product this month, the PGX Satisfast proteins and vegan bars from Natural Factors. Each portion provides a good quantity of digestible proteins as well as PGX, a highly soluble fiber complex. Combined with a healthy diet, physical activity and sufficient hydration, they form a winning combination for a healthy weight loss!
TAU wants to be your partner in turning your health around. At TAU, we are attentive to your needs. TAU will accompany you in your approach and you will discover a variety of products and health food sources. Moreover, in TAU, you can still enjoy the sound advice of our naturopaths and our natural health counselors.
Gators think Antonneous Clayton is ready to turn some heads – GatorCountry.com
Every morning that Antonneous Clayton wakes up hes thinking about what has to be done that day. There are weights, class, film and practice and, of course, he has to eat.
Clayton arrived at Florida a heralded five-start prospect but at 215 pounds he wasnt anywhere near where he needed to be to play defensive line in the Southeastern Conference.
I wasnt that SEC body that I wanted to have, he said Monday. I was highly ranked but when I got here those stars didnt mean nothing. I still had a huge learning curve.
Clayton was a star lineman for Dooley County High School where he was First Team All-State as a senior, and came to Florida at 235 pounds. By his own admission, he had put on the 20 pounds hastily, chasing a number more than worrying about how that actual weight came on. After quickly putting that weight on a virus sapped him of 20 pounds during fall camp, bringing him back to square one.
The sickness and weight loss set Clayton back. Learning plays and his responsibilities were another issue. Claytons learning curve was so big that defensive line coach Chris Rumph wondered aloud to the media if he had made a mistake offering Clayton a scholarship.
I said, Man, Rumph, you sure missed out on that one. He was bad. I mean he was bad, bad, bad, bad, Rumph said last October. But then all of a sudden you just saw him, he wants it so bad. Hes just so eager, and hes just great to be around. Hes just like right there on your hip. I mean, youre talking to somebody else and you turn around and hes right there trying to absorb everything.
Clayton played in five games last year before breaking a bone in his hand during a freak accident warming up for a game against Florida State. With his season over, Clayton threw himself into the offseason-conditioning program.
For a guy that weighed 215 pounds and needed to put on weight quickly, Clayton had to eat but not just anything, he needed to put the right kind of weight on. That meant even more schooling, this time from Collier Perno, Floridas Coordinator of Sports Nutrition.
Clayton estimates that hes taking in approximately 6,000 calories a day just trying to maintain his weight while he goes through the rigors of spring camp. That means food, lots of it and, Sorry, Dr. Atkins, it means a lot of carbohydrates too.
I leave practice theres a little shake bar right here, a protein bar that we get and that helps with recovery. You burn off (at practice) but you put back in. Also when I leave here I got to the training table and get things like baked chicken, baked fish, broccoli, mozzarella, lasagna, really help put on that good weight, Clayton said. Not just late night snacking, eating every 3-4 hours, snack bar, wheat thins, stuff like that. I need to keep those carbs inside so I can keep the weight on. I lose weight really really fast. Getting with Collier and the magnificent nutrition program just really helped me out to maintain the weight.
Its working. Pernos station is set up just outside of the indoor practice facility. On Monday she had shaker bottles labeled with players names on them, guys that she is closely monitoring their weight. Clayton dutifully walked out of his media obligation on Monday and made a stop there to pick up his pre-dinner snack. Keeping the 30 or so pounds hes put on is a top priority because Florida will be looking for Clayton to take on a bigger role this season. Florida needs to find someone to rush the passer and the Gators believe that Clayton can fit the bill.
I feel like Clayton is really stepping up to the plate, defensive tackle Khairi Clark said. I feel like he can actually be potentially a Dante Fowler role in his near future. He just has that dog in him in my opinion.
Clayton was quick to put the spotlight on other players like CeCe Jefferson, Keivonnis Davis and Jabari Zuniga.
Im still learning as of right now, he said. Im just a sophomore.
But his teammates who have watched him for a year and see how hes attacked his goal of adding weight and learning the playbook think hes being modest. They think Clayton is ready to not only contribute but to start getting your attention like hes gotten theirs.
Of course hes going to turn heads this year, defensive end CeCe Jefferson said. Hes a high energy guy, hes going to get off the ball. I know he can come in and do some damage.
A South Florida native, Nick developed a passion for all things sports at a very young age. His love for baseball was solidified when he saw Al Leiters no-hitter for the Marlins live in May of 1996. He was able to play baseball in college but quickly realized there isnt much of a market for short, slow outfielders that hit around the Mendoza line. Wanting to continue with sports in some capacity he studied journalism at the University of Central Florida. Nick got his first start in the business as an intern for a website covering all things related to the NFL draft before spending two seasons covering the Florida football team at Bleacher Report. That job led him to GatorCountry. When he isnt covering Gator sports, Nick enjoys hitting way too many shots on the golf course, attempting to keep up with his favorite t.v. shows and watching the Heat, Dolphins and Marlins. 5 Simple Ways To Lose Weight Without Dieting Or Setting Foot In A Gym – Elite Daily
I used to pound the treadmill every morning and feel absolutely miserable. Not only was I slaving away the hamster way, but I still couldnt get rid of the last few pounds I carried around my hips and stomach.
Then one day, I just thought, Fuck it. I canceled my membership and made my own exercise routine using these simple tricks to lose the last few pounds without going to the gym.
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video
The thing is, you need to stop thinking about exercise as a chore and start enjoying it.
I like to run sometimes, but doing it six days a week on a machine felt like torture. Plus, the least amount of weekly exercise you need to be healthy is far less than six days.
My obsession with the gym caused my joints to hurt and my knees were making this creepy, cracking sound. So I thought, what is it that I would actually enjoy doing?
I remembered how I used to love jumping rope as a kid, so I picked up a cheap one and began the new routine. Now my cardio includes 20 or so minutes of listening to The Weeknd (and imagine us dating) while jumping in whatever patterns my brain can come up with.
I still go running, but I do it outside and in places that have some sort of scenic nature. Im telling you, I run for a half hour up a steep bridge and enjoy it because Im surrounded by trees and the sea.
Hiking is an excellent way to be in shape if you really dont want to run. Being in nature is not only super relaxing and will clear your mind, but it will also tone your entire body.
Jumping through branches and rocks while propelling yourself up is no easy business. Hiking will encourage healthy appetite, too. Im talking about fresh juice and quinoa craving, not Ben & Jerrys.
Once you lose the idea that the gym is the Holy Grail of wellness, youll find this fun world of movement that actually feels good.
When was the last time you went to the park and hit up the swing?
Doing just 20 minutes of this every other day will give you rock hard abs. Im not kidding, one night I woke up in pain after a particularly intense 60-minute swing session.
Staying in shape and losing weight is not only a physical reaction. A lot of what is standing in between you and your results is in your head. This is why I picked up yoga.
What yoga will do for you is make you aware of your mood, so youll stop binge-eating for good.
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video
Yoga will also tone you up super quickly. The most important thing is to find the best yoga mat for yourself.
Poses like triangle, warrior one and downward dog will have you walking around with tight buns and thighs in no time. Plus, you can take your mat anywhere and its a one-time investment.
Pilates is a great option if yoga isnt intense enough for you. You can find a ton of videos on YouTube and do it right in your bedroom.
The final step of my wellness strategy is meditation.
I was absolutely shocked to discover how just 10 minutes a day made the knot in my back from the office chair disappear. After you meditate, you will be more aware of your posture and of the dozens of ways you tense up during the day.
Recognizing your emotions will also prevent you from emotional eating, so youll lose pounds for good. This is a lifestyle change and a great investment in yourself.
Finding what you enjoy will make exercise more pleasant, and coupling it with meditation and yoga for self-awareness will forever end your weight loss struggles yes, without a gym or a diet.

Does ‘false hope syndrome’ make it hard to lose weight? – The Sydney Morning Herald
For years, whenever Vik Kapoor spoke before a crowd, his stomach swirled with anxiety, his heart raced and he concluded each lecture drenched in sweat.
"My fear of public speaking affected my self-confidence, which is why I made it my New Year's resolution to tackle this problem," says Kapoor, a life coach and adjunct professor at Howard University's law school. "Initially, I tried to lessen my fear by looking for simple solutions. I vowed to wear black whenever I spoke in public to hide the sweat stains, and I scheduled a doctor's appointment to see if a health issue was causing my anxiety. I also decided to become my own cheerleader by giving myself mini pep talks before each of my lectures."
After coming up with these solutions, Kapoor felt better. But the next time he spoke in public, his planning failed. "As soon as I began my talk, my stomach churned and I started sweating. My mind went blank."
Kapoor became so frustrated that he discarded his resolution.
Kapoor didn't know it at the time, but he now realises he was suffering from "false-hope syndrome," a tendency to have unrealistic beliefs about what is required to change behaviour.
University of Toronto professors Janet Polivy and C. Peter Herman coined the term in 2000 based on their research showing that people frequently underestimate the work needed to meet self-improvement goals. When hope meets reality, the commitment to change often collapses.
Several other social scientists believe that false-hope syndrome helps explain why people struggle to lose weight, quit smoking and exercise regularly.
About 25 per cent of those who make New Year's resolutions abandon them within a week, according to the statistics website StatisticsBrain.com, whether it's to begin the Paleo diet, sign up for a daily yoga challenge or start a meditation practice. By February, most people have given up on their resolutions altogether.
Sasha Albani, a psychotherapist and marriage and family therapist in San Francisco, says the key to sticking with a resolution is to make sure that it aligns with one's personal values.
"We are more likely to follow through on our goals when we make value-led decisions. For example, if we value the physical and mental health benefits of exercise, we're more likely to succeed at beginning a new exercise program," Albani says.
She says that our goals are harder to accomplish when our values clash. For example, let's say that you want to stop drinking coffee and soda, but you really value how alert caffeine makes you feel. In this case, it's going to be more difficult to change your behaviour.
A theory of behaviour change known as acceptance and commitment therapy, or ACT, may help some people stick with resolutions.
According to the American Psychological Association, ACT therapy may work particularly well when we want to change a bad habit but we are unclear about the barriers that could get in our way.
This psychological intervention can help increase cognitive flexibility by showing people how to identify their values and the steps that they need to take to change their behaviour.
"ACT therapy breaks down goal-setting into three steps by using the guiding principles of values, commitment and willingness to change," says Daniela Tempesta, a psychotherapist and life coach in San Francisco.
According to Tempesta, these are the psychological components that are necessary for achieving your new goals.
After several years of failing to keep his resolutions, Kapoor contacted an ACT psychotherapist. He quickly learned that while he valued speaking confidently, he didn't value himself. When he had tried to give himself mini pep talks, he spoke to himself unkindly.
"I'd tell myself, 'Anyone can do this, it's easy, just pull it together.' I realised that this was negative self-talk and not a pep talk at all," Kapoor says.
With the help of his therapist, he learned how to apply ACT in a way that set him up for success.
"I realised that my fear of public speaking stemmed from a deep worry about not trusting myself. My anxiety was my body's way of propelling into the fight-or-flight response. Once I identified this insight, I had to examine why I didn't feel confident about my abilities," Kapoor says.
For those who make resolutions, Tempesta suggests looking at the changes to be made and thinking about how they can be achieved. She recommends these ACT principles:
Examine barriers: If you're vowing yet again to run a marathon or lose weight, ask yourself what stood in your way before. What will you do differently this time that might make success more likely? For example, if you began training for a marathon by running in the morning even though you're really not a morning person, you might choose to train at a different time of day.
Clarify values: While resolutions often reflect someone's values, they can compete with other values. For example, if you want to lose weight but eating is one way that you cope with stress, you may want to see whether there are other methods that will help you control stress. You might decide to adopt a pet or begin a weekly yoga class. Tempesta says that if you find a way to align your values (managing stress and eating healthier), you're more likely to reach your goals.
Accept emotions: Once you have clarified your values, ask yourself what feelings might arise as you work toward your goal. For example, if you give up caffeine because it can make you anxious, will you then feel irritable, tired or depressed? Personal reflection can help you consider mechanisms for coping with these feelings.
Take action: Commit to making behaviour changes based on your values. For example, if you value eating healthier but your colleagues often invite you out to lunch, think about how you will avoid ordering french fries instead of salad. You might take control by suggesting a restaurant with healthy offerings where you won't be tempted to eat your favourite carbs.
If you stumble along the way, don't give up, Tempesta says. Simply notice the thoughts and feelings that block your path and begin again. Remember that if you falter on your resolutions, you don't need to wait until January1 comes around again to harness new hope.

Rileys weight loss journey began last year when she weighed nearly 18st.
I would take pics [sic] of myself and just be so unhappy. But then I would only last a couple of days eating healthy before I went back off track. My main issue was I would eat one bad thing and then go "oh well, may as well eat EVERYTHING BAD EVER and start fresh tomorrow, Riley explained in an Instagram post.
This would happen day after day. As soon as I allowed myself to have a treat and then get back on track, not let one slip up ruin my day, I was away.

When I look between each pic [sic], there's a difference but it's not drastic. Then looking between the first and most recent there very clearly is a massive change, the trainee paramedic wrote.
