The 2012 movie Robot & Frank described a "near future" that would allow us to spend our golden years living "co-dependently independently," fulfilled by ever-present robot companions that could watch out for loss of balance and falls, prompt us to do constructive home projects like gardening and even become something like our best friends.
That future might be nearer than we think.
At least that's the vision of USC Professor Maja Matari. After more than a decade and a half of testing and researching the positive effects socially assistive robots can have on vulnerable populations, Matari is looking at how she can help speed this technological march into our living rooms and care facilities.
As the first step in that march, the USC Viterbi School of Engineering vice dean of research and USC Interaction Lab director co-founded the Pasadena company Embodied Inc., which is working on developing and bringing affordable socially assistive robots to market. The first "Embodied robot" for consumers will begin its testing within the year.
"I want to take the robots out of the lab," Matari said. "This is especially important to me because the users I am focusing on have special needs and the sooner we can help them, the better."
Matari's research robots have already motivated and brightened the days of patients in the cardiac ward of Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center, the autism clinic at Children's Hospital Los Angeles and the Alzheimer's care unit at Silverado Senior Living, as well as special education and public elementary schools and Be Group retirement homes.
The personal robot revolution
As Steve Jobs once said that the personal computer was a bicycle for the mind, it may just be socially assistive robots that get us on the stationary bicycle, especially in an age where so much technology demands we stare at a screen.
"Embodiment"the live presence of a robotis the key difference between the assistive technology Matari has developed and the multiple screens that encompass our current machine-assisted lives. Matari's research has shown that even just the presence of humanlike robotsthough not so human as to take us into the "uncanny valley"can be enough to motivate the elderly to exercise in a way they wouldn't with screen prompts, or they can be a conversation piece that allows children with autism to better relate to their peers.
"The social component is the only thing that reliably makes people change behavior: It makes people lose weight, it makes people recover faster," Matari told a recent national gathering for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). "It is possible that screens are actually making us less, not more, social. So that is where robotics can make a differencethis fundamental embodiment."

This won't be the world presented by the film WALL-E, where hoverchairs and telescreens are enabling the worst of our lazy and anti-social habits.
Matari's AAAS appearance represented something of a benchmark, coming nearly 10 years since she was inducted as a fellow and 20 years after she first started at USC.
Making the world a better place?
So how do socially assistive robots make the world a better place? Think of Rosie from The Jetsons, but with software by Tony Robbins.
As coined by Matari and her then-graduate researcher David Feil-Seifer 12 years ago, socially assistive robotics represent a sort of amalgam of two other areas of development in robotics: assistive robotics (robots that help the disabled through direct physical interaction) and social robotics (robots that socialize with people).
Matari's research has shown promising results among a variety of patient groupschildren who are autistic and obese, those recovering from stroke, Alzheimer's and dementia sufferers, and the elderly population in general. Her 2014 study found improved autonomous behavior in children with autism who copied the motions of socially assistive robots, while a 2015 study found those in stroke recovery responded more quickly to upper-extremity exercises (pushing buttons on a button board) when prompted and motivated by a socially assistive robot.
Socially assistive robots can also help to make up for the traditional shortfall in available caregivers, especially as baby boomers and successive generations exponentially swell the ranks of those needing care. The robots can act as a bridge to assisted living facilities, allowing patients and seniors to maintain quality of care in the home. Assisted living not only has an impact on quality of life, but studies have shown a twofold mortality rate for relocation of care, especially in patients with dementia.
"When there is a lack of available care, as is the case with numerous growing special needs populations, a personalized robot can complement and serve as a force multiplier for human care," Matari said.
The coming decades promise to be an exciting time for this nascent industry, as toy robots and Roomba vacuum cleaners are replaced by more complex and interactive machines that are as adept at "pushing our buttons" as we are at pushing theirs.
"My work aims at human augmentation," Matari said. "I want to use robots to help humans have the ability to do their own work and do it better, increasing their health and wellness."

However, the foundation of every successful weight-loss program remains a healthy, calorie-controlled diet combined with exercise. For successful, long-term weight loss, you must make permanent changes in your lifestyle and health habits.
How do you make those permanent changes? Consider following these six strategies for weight-loss success.
Permanent weight loss takes time and effort -- and a lifelong commitment. Make sure that you're ready to make permanent changes and that you do so for the right reasons.
To stay committed to your weight loss, you need to be focused. It takes a lot of mental and physical energy to change your habits. So as you're planning new weight-loss-related lifestyle changes, make a plan to address other stresses in your life first, such as financial problems or relationship conflicts. While these stresses may never go away completely, managing them better should improve your ability to focus on achieving a healthier lifestyle. Then, once you're ready to launch your weight-loss plan, set a start date and then -- start.
No one else can make you lose weight. You must undertake diet and exercise changes to please yourself. What's going to give you the burning drive to stick to your weight-loss plan? Make a list of what's important to you to help stay motivated and focused, whether it's an upcoming beach vacation or better overall health. Then find a way to make sure that you can call on your motivational factors during moments of temptation. Perhaps you want to post an encouraging note to yourself on the pantry door, for instance.
While you have to take responsibility for your own behavior for successful weight loss, it helps to have support -- of the right kind. Pick people to support you who will encourage you in positive ways, without shame, embarrassment or sabotage. Ideally, find people who will listen to your concerns and feelings, spend time exercising with you or creating healthy menus, and who will share the priority you've placed on developing a healthier lifestyle. Your support group can also offer accountability, which can be a strong motivation to stick to your weight-loss goals. If you prefer to keep your weight-loss plans private, be accountable to yourself by having regular weigh-ins and recording your diet and exercise progress in a journal.
It may seem obvious to set realistic weight-loss goals. But do you really know what's realistic? Over the long term, it's best to aim for losing 1 to 2 pounds (0.5 to 1 kilogram) a week, although initially you might lose weight more quickly than that if you make significant changes -- just be sure the changes are health supporting. To lose 1 to 2 pounds a week, you need to burn 500 to 1,000 calories more than you consume each day, through a lower calorie diet and regular exercise.
When you're setting goals, think about both process and outcome goals. "Exercise regularly" is an example of a process goal, while "Lose 30 pounds" is an example of an outcome goal. It isn't essential that you have an outcome goal, but you should set process goals because changing your processes -- your habits -- is a key to weight loss. Also make sure that your goals are SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-limited. An example of a SMART goal is aiming to walk for 30 minutes a day, five days a week for the next three months, and logging your results.
Adopting a new eating style that promotes weight loss must include lowering your total calorie intake. But decreasing calories need not mean giving up taste, satisfaction or even ease of meal preparation. One way you can lower your calorie intake is by eating more plant-based foods -- fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Strive for variety to help you achieve your goals without giving up taste or nutrition.
In particular, get your weight loss started by eating a healthy breakfast every day; eating at least four servings of vegetables and three servings of fruits daily; and using healthy fats, such as olive oil, vegetable oils and nut butters. In addition, cut back on sugar, choose low-fat dairy products and keep meat consumption to a 3-ounce portion (about the size of a deck of cards).
The key to weight loss is burning more calories than you consume. Because 3,500 calories equals about 1 pound (0.5 kilogram) of fat, you need to burn 3,500 calories more than you take in to lose 1 pound. So if you cut 500 calories from your typical diet each day, you'd lose about 1 pound a week (500 calories x 7 days = 3,500 calories).
While you can lose weight without exercise, exercise plus calorie restriction can help give you the weight-loss edge. Exercise can help burn off the excess calories you can't cut through diet alone. Exercise also offers numerous health benefits, including boosting your mood, strengthening your cardiovascular system and reducing your blood pressure. Exercise can also help in maintaining weight loss. Studies show that people who maintain their weight loss over the long term get regular physical activity.
How many calories you burn depends on the frequency, duration and intensity of your activities. One of the best ways to lose body fat is through steady aerobic exercise -- such as brisk walking -- for at least 30 minutes most days of the week. Any extra movement helps burn calories, though. Lifestyle activities may be easier to fit into your day. Think about ways you can increase your physical activity throughout the day if you can't fit in formal exercise on a given day. For example, make several trips up and down stairs instead of using the elevator, or park at the far end of the lot when shopping.
It's not enough to eat healthy foods and exercise for only a few weeks or even months if you want long-term, successful weight loss. These habits must become a way of life. Lifestyle changes start with taking an honest look at your eating patterns and daily routine. After assessing your personal challenges to weight loss, try working out a strategy to gradually change habits and attitudes that have sabotaged your past efforts. And you have to move beyond simply recognizing your challenges -- you have to plan for how you'll deal with them if you're going to succeed in losing weight once and for all.
You likely will have an occasional setback. But instead of giving up entirely after a setback, simply start fresh the next day. Remember that you're planning to change your life. It won't happen all at once. Stick to your healthy lifestyle and the results will be worth it.

"There's things that are going to go wrong whether it's in your bones, whether it's your hormones, your muscle tissue, whatever. You need to have that balance," said Ms. Udzella.
It's why Ms. Ramos says to reach her personal goals, dieting alone won't get the results she wants. "I'm trying to incorporate more fruits and vegetables in my diet and trying to come here like after I get out of work."
Ms. Udzella says aim to drop one to two pounds per week so that you protect lean muscle mass. If you plan to diet, she recommends small changes over time because it's easier to make it part of a healthy lifestyle.

Pearl the morbidly obese pooch has lost nearly three stone thanks to a strict diet and an underwater treadmill – Metro

Just two years ago, Pearl the Jack Russel-cross was scheduled to be euthanised thanks to her weight.
She weight close to six stone, making her morbidly obese, and had to be wheeled everywhere on a special cart.
Vets feared her heart could stop at any moment. She had so many rolls of fat she couldnt walk or turn her neck. Poor Pearl.
Abandoned on the streets, it was found that there was no medical condition that had made Pearl such a large size just neglect and severe overfeeding from her previous owners.
She was scared, depressed, and had pain in her joints, having been fed nearly to death.
Vets were astounded that she was still alive.
Thankfully, she was discovered by Dog Networking Agents Inc, who decided to step in and save Pearl from her growing weight.
Pet rescuer Hayley Zielinski quickly put Pearl on a special diet and exercise plan, setting her up on an underwater treadmill so she could work out without putting too much pressure on her body.
Two years on, shes lost two stone and eight pounds and looks like an entirely different dog.
But shes still got more weight to lose.
This dog was absolutely morbidly obese, she couldnt walk at all or move her head because her neck was enormous, she even had to be wheeled into the vets, said Hayley.
No one had seen such a morbidly obese dog that was still alive and vets told us that her heart could stop at any moment.
At times, we didnt think she was going to make it, we feared she was going to have a heart attack, but she didnt and she fought on, Im really proud of her.
Shes came so far in her weight loss and emotional wellbeing. She went from being trapped in her own body and scared of the outside world to confident, plus she can even jog every now and again.
Dogs like Pearl would normally be euthanized in the shape she was in but we wanted to give her a chance and Im glad we did, shes amazing.
Pearl is now a local celebrity for her amazing weight loss, popping along to Weight Watchers meetings and strolling around the town showing off her transformation.
Shes a real character, shes hilarious and very lazy, said Hayley.
I will take her for a walk and after a while she will just drop on the floor and refuses to move.
