Here’s A Simple Explainer On The Ketogenic Diet – Huffington Post Australia
When you're trying to lose weight, get into shape or manage a condition like type 2 diabetes, it can be confusing to choose from the 20 different diets that all promise superb health and massive weight loss.
One diet that has gained popularity of late is the ketogenic diet, also known as the 'keto diet', a strict low carb, high fat way of eating.
To find out more about the keto diet, The Huffington Post Australia spoke to two health experts.
"The keto diet is basically a very low-carb diet to encourage the body to use fat as fuel instead of glucose," nutritionist Fiona Tuck told HuffPost Australia. "The lower the carbohydrate intake, the quicker the body enters a fat burning state."
The diet promotes eating fewer than 50 grams of carbohydrates a day to encourage the body into a state of ketosis, where the body is almost completely fuelled by fat (rather than glucose in the form of carbohydrates).
"When we dramatically limit carbohydrate intake, the body needs to look for an alternate fuel source, calling on the body to convert its supply of fat to glucose, a process called ketosis," Tuck said.
"Ketosis produces ketone bodies which are produced from the breakdown of fats in the liver. When the body calls on fat stores to supply energy, we lose weight.
"Some keto diets promote as little as 15-20 grams of carbohydrates a day. Carbohydrates are contained in a variety of foods such as bread, rice, pasta, whole grains, fruits and starchy vegetables."
According to nutritionist Anthony Power, by drastically reducing cabrohydrates in the diet, increasing fat and pushing the body into ketosis, the body uses a more stable source of fuel.
"The ketogenic diet is producing an alternative fuel for the body, not fuelling primarily on glucose from carbohydrates. It's fuelling on the breakdown of fat. We don't need outside glucose," Power said.
"A few thousand years ago, the body needed to be able to breakdown our own fat, or fat in animal products, to fuel our brain and body. And it did that by ketones."
Fat also has a much smaller impact on blood sugar levels, Power added, especially compared to carbohydrates and protein.
While giving up carbs sounds like an impossible feat, there are two significant pros for the ketogenic diet.
"The positives -- it's a quick and reliable way to lose weight quickly," Tuck said. "So it's better suited to someone that needs to lose weight quickly in a short period of time. For example, a morbidly obese person in need of medical intervention."
Because fat does not impact insulin the way carbohydrates too, Power said the ketogenic diet is ideal for people who are diabetic or insulin resistant. Research is proving this to be effective, too.
"The World Health Organisation currently estimates that 400 million people worldwide have diabetes -- nearly half a billion people," Power said. "Why? Because eating carbohydrates (which converts to glucose) then increases our blood sugar, increases our insulin, leads to weight gain and eventually heart disease and diabetes.
"The majority of patients I use the ketogenic diet for are diabetics, those with heart disease and gastrointestinal tract issues (reflux, constipation, bloating), and they've had great results when they reduce their carbohydrates."
According to Tuck, following a ketogenic diet can be potentially damaging to health, particularly in terms of nutritional deficiencies.
"If followed under medical supervision for a short period of time, it can be very successful. However, long term is not recommended due to potential side effects," Tuck said.
"Side effects of a long term ketogenic diet can include muscle loss, dizziness, loss of mental clarity and focus, kidney damage and acidosis.
"Cutting out food groups for a long period of time may also put the body at risk of nutritional deficiencies. Limiting carbohydrate intake means a higher fat and protein intake, leading to possible over-consumption of saturated fats and proteins."
Due to the strict nature of the diet, following a ketogenic diet can also be isolating and unsustainable.
"Cutting out carbohydrates to the degree that is required for the body to go into ketosis makes the diet very limited and potentially antisocial to follow," Tuck said.
Before starting any diet, it's important to see a GP, particularly those with health conditions, who are elderly, pregnant, on medication and who have a high intensity job and rely on mental alertness or physical exertion.
"Whatever diet you start, do it for a reason and have an endpoint," Power explained.
And if you don't need to diet, don't.
"If you're getting along fine in terms of the food you're eating, your body is not inflamed, you're not diabetic, you're not overweight, then terrific. But for those 400 million patients in the world today, putting them on a carbohydrate restricted diet works."
The main principles of the keto diet is a reduction of carbs to 50 grams or fewer, and an increase in fats.
"The ideal fat is grass-fed meat and butter, olive oil, avocado, oily fish, nuts and seeds -- not having mountains of highly processed vegetable oils or margarine that have been highly treated," Power said.
A person can check whether they're actually in a state of ketosis through urine testing strips as well as through blood and breath tests.
Power does warn people against starting the ketogenic diet without supervision or properly researching (researching online for 10 minutes doesn't count).
"That's the problem. Patients can feel pretty bad -- achy, irritable, poor sleep, cramping," Power told HuffPost Australia. "But they haven't increased their sodium, potassium or magnesium.
"When you go on a ketogenic diet, your body does change, including levels of electrolytes, potassium, sodium and magnesium. You're changing in a positive way but for many patients, for the first few weeks (especially those who are diabetic or have blood sugar issues) you have to really monitor it."
Even still, the ketogenic diet may not work for you.
"Everyone responds differently. You may lose 30 kilos, your best friend may lose three kilos and feel horrible. It's such an individual thing," Power said.
"It's not 'no carbohydrates' forever. It's just finding what amount is good for you and finding that sweet spot."

CNC makes ready-made meals on the go – Jamaica Gleaner
Want to drop the pounds but don't have the time to create the balanced meals your body needs? Now you can just pick up your healthy meals off the shelves in selected supermarkets, courtesy of Complete Nutrition Care (CNC).
CNC seeks to provide Jamaicans with a wholesome, healthy lifestyle through customised meal packages, diet counselling and suggested exercise regimes to improve the quality of life of their clients.
"Our meals are well balanced, nutritious, hence the tag line Meta-Balance 360, and provide the right caloric intake based on a complete assessment of clients' needs," Janet Rankine told Food.
Rankine started customising meal plans for individual clients in 2014 and has now taken her business to the next level, making pre-packaged meals as well as snacks.
Rankine has a genuine desire to improve the lives and welfare of those around her after seeing an increase in non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. She noted that many have resorted to making unwise food choices due to time constraints.
Rankine conducted a market survey to see exactly what was in demand and found that more individuals sought frozen pre-packaged meals that had a shelf life for up to six months once kept frozen. So while they geared their planning towards three main daily meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) with healthy snacks inbetween, she takes her customers' opinions seriously, thus using their input to help fine-tune her products.
Supermarkets will have frozen meals - complete with protein, staples and vegetables, perfect for lunch or dinner. These dishes are prepared without oil, are low in fat, high in fibre, low in cholesterol, use all-natural seasoning, properly portioned, and do not interact with the glycemic level.
Snacks like mixed nuts will also be available. These are best between meals to prevent the body reacting to 'starvation', thus increasing one's metabolic rate, allowing one to lose weight quickly.
CNC has already been lauded for its good work, having received the New Manufacturer of the Year Award for 2015-2016 from the Jamaica Manufacturers' Association. They also will be providing meals for TVJ's new weight-loss programme 'Losing it'. But with all this growth, what means the most to Rankine is the results of her clients.
CNC is always available for consultation at various locations in Kingston, including Endocrinology Diabetes and Associates, Farico Medical, and Constant Spring Medical; and in Portmore - Greater Portmore Medical Centre, Portmore Medical Service and CNC Diet Centre at 1477 Cumberland Boulevard, Cumberland. They also still do deliveries of meals for free at convenient locations in and around the Corporate Area.

Experts reveal the four best ways to lose fat fast – Daily Star
HOW to lose fat quickly, according to experts.
GETTY
You know how it goes.
Your weight loss journey will always begin with the best intentions.
Youll cut out all the excess junk, go to the gym more often and the weight will start to slide off. But restricting yourself is a hard lifestyle to keep up.
Rather than crash dieting, you can make a few small tweaks to your current diet and exercise plan that will help you lose more fat and keep it off.
20 fat-burning foods that help you lose weight

Avacodo - includes monosaturated fatty acids that are more likely to be used as slow burning energy than stored as body fat
1. Eat more regularly
Eating every three to four hours can help prevent fat gain as it will give your body long-lasting energy and stop hunger and cravings that will make you reach for the chocolate.
Make sure your meals are filled with fruit and vegetables, as well as whole grains and lean protein.

2. Do interval training
High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has been proven to promote fast weight loss.
The exercise which consists of short bursts of exercise with quick rest periods in between lead to a spiked heart rate which burns more calories.
Co-founder of SoHo Strength Lab Albert Matheny told Mens Health that the best kind of interval training to do is a Tabata-style workout which will boost your metabolism.
This kind of workout involves 20 seconds of intense exercise like burpees followed by a 10 second rest. You will do this for 20 minutes with five different exercises lasting four minutes each.
3. Strength train three times per week
Muscle mass will increase the speed of your metabolism and building muscle mass through weight training will increase how many calories you burn, Albert said.
He suggested doing three or four sets of squats, lunges, bench presses, bicep curls and tricep pull downs. Increase your weight when your current weight becomes too easy to lift.

4. Make sure youre getting enough sleep
A study published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine found those who sleep for eight and a half hours a night for two weeks lost twice as much weight than those who slept just five an a half hours per night even though both followed the same diet and workout plan.
This is because sleeping helps to keep your hunger hormones like leptin and ghrelin at bay so youre not waking up craving bacon.

Diet Doc Reveals Dangers Of Original hCG Diet And Offers Doctor-Supervised Weight Loss Alternatives – Marketwired (press release)
CLARKSBURG, WV--(Marketwired - March 01, 2017) - Losing weight can be a long process and despite the surplus of weight loss programs promising a 'quick fix,' weight loss can be emotionally challenging as well. Many individuals struggle with emotional eating or weight regain even after following a weight loss regimen. This makes consistent, long-term weight loss difficult for most people. Fortunately, even modest weight loss (10% or less) makes a significant difference for obese or overweight people. For individuals consistently struggling with long-term weight loss, medical weight loss programs, doctor-supervised and customized weight loss, and nutritional counseling are also available.
The hCG diet involves reducing overall caloric intake and taking low doses of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) that burns "abnormal" fat located in cells and around organs. hCG is a hormone produced during pregnancy and although it has been historically utilized to "lose weight fast," it can be very dangerous. The original version of the hCG diet, also known as the Simeons method, is essentially a starvation-based diet that limits daily consumption to 500 calories and unsurprisingly, results in harmful conditions like muscle loss, general weakness, and hair loss. However, since the initiation of the Simeons method, hCG has been applied in less extreme situations.
Diet Doc, a nationally recognized weight loss program, has a history of discouraging the Simeons method and educating patients about an alternative that involves consuming between 800 to 1250 calories everyday without significantly reducing the rate of weight loss.
The hCG drops available online are neither FDA-regulated nor prescription-strength and individuals considering hCG should consider less harmful approaches. For instance, Diet Doc offers personalized diet planning and various prescription medications in the form of injections and sublingual tablets. Diet Doc also offers unlimited clinical support, direct doctor supervision, and easy-to-follow diet plans that are customized to each patient's specific health and nutritional needs.
Diet Doc programs and aids have a long history of promoting rapid weight loss and thereby alleviating issues like heart disease, high blood pressure and hypertension. And with a team of doctors, nurses, nutritionists and motivational coaches, Diet Doc helps patients curb hunger and lose weight fast. In fact, more than 90% of Diet Doc patients report losing rapid weight monthly and keeping it off long-term.
Patients can get started immediately, with materials shipped directly to their home or office. They can also maintain weight loss in the long-term through weekly consultations, customized diet plans, motivational coaches and a powerful prescription program. With Diet Doc, the doctor is only a short phone call away and a fully dedicated team of qualified professionals is available 6 days per week to answer questions, address concerns and support patients.
Getting started with Diet Doc is very simple and affordable. New patients can easily visit https://www.dietdoc.com to quickly complete a health questionnaire and schedule an immediate, free online consultation.

Does The Tummy Flattening Tea Khlo Kardashian Promotes on Instagram Actually Work? – Yahoo Health
The appeal of a detox tea is 100 percent understandable: drink, and done. Take a sip, reset, kick start healthy habits, shed a few toxins and maybe a few pounds by simply drinking a steaming cup of the good stuff twice a day. But does it really work?
Celebrities like Khlo Kardashian say yes. The reality star turned jean queen took to Instagram (for a fee, of course) a couple of month ago to praise Flat Tummy Tea, a two-step detox tea she claimed left her feeling sooo good today. Cleanse starts Monday, right? she joked to her 61 million plus followers, telling them I aint about nothing but results.
The woman who kick-started the whole revenge body trend (and currently hosts its namesake reality show) does truly seem to be all about results when it comes to health and fitness these days. After her inarguably rough divorce from NBA star Lamar Odom, the curvy Kardashian dropped 35 pounds by following an intense fitness regime and diet makeover. But how much of those results can really be credited to detox tea? Not much, it turns out.
Detox is a scam, Louis J. Papa, M.D., an internist and clinical professor of medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center, tells Yahoo Beauty. You cant detox your body. It has a very sophisticated system that has developed over millions of years to filter out what we dont need. Detox sounds good but its not something that can be done.
A relatively healthy human body does the job of removing what the body needs to get rid of quite well, agrees Michelle Dudash, RDN, author of Clean Eating for Busy Families. Rather than look for a quick fix, Dudash recommends focusing on a healthy diet that supports the bodys natural detoxification process, specifically by drinking enough water, eating plenty of fruits and vegetables (especially those like broccoli, cauliflower and berries, among others), consuming enough protein, and eating fermented foods like pickled vegetables, kefir and yogurt.
Oh, and definitely up that fiber intake to at least 25 grams per day: High fiber foods like lentils, black beans, whole grains, fruit with edible skins, and vegetables keep the digestive track moving along. Soluble fiber even helps clean out the cholesterol, she explains.
While Flat Tummy Tea, which claims to stop you from feeling bloated and sluggish (bluggish, theyve coined it), is not packed full of fiber, it is packed full of what Dr. Papa says looks like a lot of really delicious stuff. But its all stuff that you can cook and eat, there is no reason that you have to drink it in a detox tea.
The tea regimen comes in two parts: a daytime tea filled with natural ingredients that have been traditionally used to help support your metabolism, give you an antioxidant energy kick and get your digestion ready to start the day on an all-natural high, and a nighttime one made from natural ingredients that have been traditionally known to work together to help get (and keep) that tummy flat by helping to detoxify your intestinal tract free of built of toxins and reduce water weight.
What are these ingredients, exactly? Some of them, like peppermint and licorice root, have been used to aid digestion in the past. Some patients do well with peppermint oil to really help their reflux, says Dr. Papa, while licorice root has sometimes been used to help with constipation and what not. The problem is that sometimes, in large amounts, licorice root can affect kidney function and your acid-based metabolism. Green tea, which is contained in the daytime detox tea, has many known health benefits. But when it comes to weight loss, Dr. Papa says the results are inconclusive. There were some studies to show that individuals that drink green tea were able to lose weight, he explains. But we dont know if that was because they were just filling up with fluid, or if it was the green tea itself, specifically.
What else do the teas contain? Laxatives, to put it simply. Detox teas may help reduce bloating via laxative effects, which isnt recommended for regular use, says Dudash. Flat Tummy Teas nighttime brew does indeed list Senna, a gentle, FDA-approved herb that is found in many over-the-counter laxatives, among its ingredients. While there is probably nothing wrong with using a product containing this if youre feeling a bit constipated from travel, dietary changes, and change in sleep schedule, it would be wise to first consult first with your physician rather than dive in head first in search of results, warns Dudash. A tea that contains laxative ingredients could cause you to lose some weight quickly, but not necessarily in the healthiest of ways. First, it causes you to have bowel movements, which, yes, you are physically losing weight. But to do that on a regular basis is not sustainable. A laxative also causes you to lose water and possibly become dehydrated, which is also not beneficial in the short-term or long-term.
Also, prolonged use of laxatives like senna can disrupt the potassium balance of the body. Potassium is an important electrolyte that regulates fluid levels in the body, blood pressure, and muscular performance, explains Dudash, and senna used with other stimulant laxatives, like rhubarb, which is also in this product, can cause a further drop in potassium levels, which is not a good thing for most people.
Bottom line? When it comes to any health and wellness product, just because its natural, do not assume that it is a safe thing, warns Dr. Papa, though he notes that the Flat Tummy Tea is probably not dangerous. The actual ingredients that are going to be in a tea are going to be so small that the actual effect is going to be diluted.
So go ahead and drink up if you like, just be prepared to put in some sweat alongside those sips if you want to see results.
Unfortunately, there are no shortcuts, he explains. Wellness takes work. We have known forever, and it still holds now, that a diet that is high in fruits and vegetables, combined with healthy choices of protein, regular exercise, and adequate restful sleep, is the foundation to maintaining good health for the rest of your life. If you want to have a cup of tea in the morning and evening, go ahead. But you still have to do the work.
Something Khlo, who has been nothing if not open about her body-positive propensity for hitting the gym, likely understands.

Don’t Lose Weight Too Quickly – Gulfshore Life
Find out the best pace for weight loss.
By Justin Paprocki
Sometimes, slow and steady does win the race. In the case of weight loss, thats usually true.
According to the Mayo Clinic, a healthy decline in weight may not seem like that much; doctors typically recommend a gradual loss of 1-2 pounds per week. Thatll require patience, but in the long term, its the best pace for success. The fast and furious mentality for dropping pounds may see quicker results, but it could be setting you up for health complications down the road. It may also lead to a yo-yo diet, where the pounds tend to come off quickly but then be gained back just as fast.

Ellensburg’s Jake Gordon loses 45 pounds to wrestle his senior season – Daily Record-News
For some high school athletes, sports are all about the thrill of a win. For others, it is an extracurricular activity just to have fun.
But to Ellensburg High School senior Jake Gordon, it turned into a motivation to lose weight and get back in shape.
Gordons journey
Story continues below video
Gordon wrestled in middle school, then joined the high school wrestling team as a freshman and wrestled for a season and a half. He took a year off during his junior season to concentrate on his academics, but when he returned to the team, he was too heavy to participate in any weight class.
I started the season out weighing 330 and the highest weight class was 285, Gordon said. Ive always been known as Big Jake to my friends, but I wanted to wrestle again, so I worked my butt off.
Gordon attended practices and work-out sessions with the team, but he did not want to just watch and root on his teammates from the sidelines. He wanted to be out there, helping them win matches.
The first thing I did was go out and get a gym membership, Gordon said. I was practicing hard trying to get that weight off, but I knew I had to do more. Working out an hour and a half during practice wasnt going to cut it.
During the weight-loss process, on a match week, Gordon sat on the stationary bike and pedaled 10 miles after practice if he was close to making weight.
He also changed his eating habits by eating more salads, drinking fruit smoothies and controlling his hunger.
I just wouldnt eat lunch because I knew if I was going to go out, I was going to eat McDonalds or Taco Bell, Gordon said. Before I left the house in the morning Id eat breakfast and then go home and eat.
Another hurdle
A month and a half into the season, Gordon planned on wrestling in the Bulldogs home tournament, the Ray Westberg Invitational on Jan. 14. One hour before weigh-ins he was a single pound too heavy.
According to the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association, high school wrestlers must not only pass the body weight portion where you must be at or under your desired weight class, but must also pass a hydration test reading from 1.000 to 1.025.
Instead of giving up, Gordon ran upstairs to the gym and jumped on the bike.
I rode 12 miles on the bike with a sweatshirt on and tightened the strings around my face, Gordon said. By the time of weigh-ins I was a half-pound under.
He lost his first-round match to Selahs Adrian Valdovinos but it was the first match in almost two years where his family and friends could watch and root him on.
I was so proud of him when he came to me and wanted to do that, said his mom, Alisha. I was actually shocked how quickly he did it, only because losing weight isnt easy.
Gordon kept off the weight and went on to finish eighth in the district tournament when he pinned Prossers Steve Garcia in 1:50.
He wanted to give up many times.
I thought a lot of times about just not showing up to practice and saying to myself, I dont need to wrestle but later in the season I realized how many people came out just to see me wrestle, Gordon said.
Now that wrestling is over, Gordon has hung up his singlet, but looks back on it as a lifestyle change. He lost 45 pounds over the course of the season and said he feels like he has much more energy.
I would have regretted it if I didnt wrestle, Gordon said. During the season and cutting all that weight was hard and I was negative about it, but now that it is over I wish the season was longer. It was awesome.

Julie explains: Because of the skin, I feel like I cant be the wife that I want to be.
My husband knows that I come up with reasons to avoid intimacy until he goes to sleep.
I dont have that drive or that motivation to be intimate with my husband because I dont want him to see me naked. And that takes a toll on our relationship.
I also feel like I cant be the best mum that I want to be for my kids. I dont like it when my kids touch my skin.

You dont ever want to tell your kids dont touch me. It just feels me with guilt.
The skin makes me feel distant from my whole family. Its a constant reminder that I was the fat girl, fat friend, fat wife, fat mum.
And as long as I have the skin, that will never change because I cant even hide it.
I just hate my body and no matter how hard I try there is no covering up this skin.
As long as its there, you can see it. And I gave up trying to hide it because I cant.
Its miserable and Ill never live the fulfilling life that I feel like I deserve. I need skin removal surgery, or Im never going to feel comfortable in my skin.

"I am happy that Ive lost massive amounts of weight, but Im not happy with the way that my body looks.
"I never thought that I would have this much skin after the weight loss. You get sweat underneath all of this right here, and it causes rashes.
"I try to deal with it by powdering but it doesnt matter how much you powder up, you feel unclean.
"Its just something that really holds me back because you have all this skin and you have to cover it constantly just to feel some semblance of normalcy.
"Whatever I try to hide it, its always there, its like a constant reminder of the abuse and neglect of my body."
My Extreme Excess Skin airs on Thursdays at 10pm on TLC.

Michael Ferrara Lost 70 Pounds: ‘Never Believe That You’re Too Old to Lose Weight’ – Yahoo Health
Weight-Loss Win is an original Yahoo series that shares the inspiring stories of people who have shed pounds healthfully.
Michael Ferrara is 46 and weighs 230 pounds. In 2014, after gradually gaining for many years, he was able to take control of his weight using a low-carb diet. This is the story of his weight-loss journey.
The Turning Point
My weight became an issue a few years after my family bought a pizzeria in 1983. Over the next few years, my weight started to balloon. After the store closed, I had a few low-activity jobs which compounded the problem. After being married in 1999, I continued to gain weight as fun times with my new wife led to fun fat!
There were a couple of different turning points that started my journey. The first was in 2014: I saw a picture of myself and was completely horrified about how I looked. I always took pride in my appearance and never noticed how terrible I looked because the weight gain was so gradual.
In addition, my brother lost around 75 pounds at the time that I was at my heaviest and he gave me a huge bag of his old clothes. I was always lighter than my brother all throughout our lives but I couldnt even button those jeans he gave me! They were a size 40 and I was snug in a 48. The next day, I started my diet.
The Changes
I tackled losing weight by being practical. I knew it wasnt going to come off in fiveminutes, so I basically took it day by day. I decided to follow the Atkins diet, which is a low-carbohydrate, high-fat, and moderate-protein diet. One amazing thing about the Atkins diet is that you really dont have to exercise, which was good because, at 300 pounds, there wasnt much I could do. I chose Atkins in the first placebecause being a chauffeur, my schedule is pretty much all over the place. I do not have set hours, which makes it hard to plan meals ahead of time. Atkins afforded me the luxury of being able to eat on the road as long as I avoidcarbs or sugars. In a pinch, I could still go to a fast food restaurant for burgers and eat them without the buns, or go to a pizzeria for a sausage and peppers platterwithmozzarella but no sauce. It really opened me up to many different opportunities so I wouldnt get bored eating the same things over and over.
After the first month, I started to feel energized! I had never had so much energy before. I dropped around 12 pounds that first month. That made me feel incredible because I now wanted to go out for walks something I had no interest in before. As the months progressed and people started to notice I was losing weight, it was another incredible motivator.
Plus, Im a clothes horse and love to dress nicely. My fat clothes were literally hanging off my body and when I went to the bag with my brothers smaller jeans, they fit! I dont know if I can put into words how that felt. Seven months after starting Atkins, I went from a size 48 to a 40! At this point, giving up wasnt an option.
The After
After hitting 70 pounds lost, I felt unstoppable. Physically, I was walking more and doing more activities with my kids. Even on days where I am very active, nothing hurts anymore. When I was at my heaviest, if I went for a short walk, my knees and back would kill me. In April of 2015, I did a Color Run with my family at Citi Field and without realizing it, did a 5k! Never in my life would I have thought I could do that. Now we are planning more 5ks to do as a family.
Before starting my journey, there were days where I was unhappy because of my weight. In fact, I was giving more work to my drivers because I was embarrassed about how I looked. No one knew that except me. Today, I look forward to going to work because I dont feel like I look terrible; my confidence is sky high.

I think the only surprise is how quickly the weight came off. My ritual would be to weigh myself once a week to track my progress. The first few weeks felt like hitting the lotto. Three pounds one week, five pounds the next it was all happening so quickly. Once it stabilized, the weight came off slower, but I was still losing consistently.
I try to go for walks 3to 4times a week. I never would have done that before. I also park my car the farthest I can from a store or mall just so I can get in more walking. I take the stairs instead of the elevator. Ive also become more cognizant of what Im eating and listen to my body. There are plenty of times Ill just have a salad or an Atkins meal bar for dinner because Im not that hungry. Ialsodrink at least 2 liters of water a day.
The Maintenance
Today, I make sure to think about what Im going to eat ahead of time.If Im going to be in the car for 10-11 hours, I make sure to take a couple of meal bars in case there isnt a healthy choice for meals where Im going.
My progress really motivates me. Now when I step on the scale, it doesnt shoot upto 300 pounds. To further motivate myself, Ill go out and purposely buy a shirt that I like which is a size smaller, to give me a goal to aim for. I love when people compliment me on how much weight Ive lost. It makes me extremely proud.
The Struggles
Even after two years, there are still days when I emotionally feel fat and want to eat. Being Italian, I really miss eating pizza, pasta, cannoli, and New York bagels. What motivates me not to eat an entire pizza is when I see pictures of myself from two plus years ago. I vow that I will never look like that again.
Advice
Ive done numerous diets before, but since I wasnt mentally ready, I always failed. Keep in mind that Babe Ruth struck out more than1,300 times on the way to hitting 714 home runs. Never believe that youre too old to lose weight or change your lifestyle. I was one of those people who always saw other people losing weight and never thought I could do it. But I found a diet that works for me and so can you!
