New year’s resolutions to lose weight could harm those with eating disorders – WIFR

ROCKFORD, Ill (WIFR) -- The new year means new resolutions. One of the most popular resolutions is to lose weight. While that mindset might work for some, others who struggle with eating disorders are at risk.

As gyms become packed and health sections at grocery stores are over stocked, those struggling with body-image are exposed to weight loss. Health professionals say it's important to change your mindset to become healthier in the new year, instead of lose weight.

"So whatever you can try to do to reframe your thoughts or say, no this is what's actually going to be better for me, and tell that eating disorder those thoughts," says Erika Oltmanns of Mercyhealth. "And try to rework more helpful positive thoughts, I think that's a really good tool."

She says it's also important to have a strong support system in the new year.

Weve always been honest about our weight loss: the Pinch of Nom chefs on their recipe for success – The Guardian

Kay Featherstone and Kate Allinson were at a Spice Girls concert last spring, just two figures in a sea of people. As they gazed around the stadium, Kay broke down in tears. Not because of anything the Spice Girls were singing, but because the two chefs were consumed by the thought of their own followers; they have more than 900,000 on Facebook. When we go to a gig, its like: We could fill this space so many times! It becomes very, very scary, Featherstone says.

They got the same feeling at Fleetwood Mac. Featherstone has sweaty palms just thinking about it. She and Allinson, who are business as well as life partners, try to forget the noughts and imagine a community of 900, but its still a long way from the days when they had their own restaurant with customers who came in every Sunday and even brought the pair presents if they went on a cruise.

No wonder Allinson, 48, and Featherstone, 34, sound bewildered, if not downright terrified. Their success as the chef duo Pinch of Nom has been sudden. Last spring, their first book of simple slimming recipes sold 500,000 copies in just five weeks (and recently passed the 1m mark). Last months follow-up, Everyday Light, sold nearly 130,000 in its first week, knocking David Walliams from the top of the bestseller list.

It has been a little bit crazy, Featherstone whispers, as if danger lurks nearby. They have had offers for TV shows offers for everything but have declined them all because they are really shy, says Featherstone, although she is the gobbier half because Kate doesnt usually like to talk. (Thats fair, says Allinson, whose T-shirt is emblazoned with the slogan: Introverts unite separately in your own homes.) When I ask if they might choose to meet their followers Im thinking of events they say that they did bump into some once, and you cant say it wont happen again. But it has never been about us, Featherstone says, and Allinson, a sort of quiet chorus, echoes her words. Its never been about us.

This is something of a mantra for Featherstone and Allinson, and Im intrigued by their wish to deny they are protagonists in their own enterprise. After all, many of their recipes are autobiographical. Tin of praters, a bacon, potato and onion bake, is lifted straight from Featherstones childhood, while the entire Pinch of Nom adventure took off when the two went along to their local Slimming World in Wirral four years ago, then began to post their own recipes to a growing Facebook community.

Their personal story is at the heart of their business but so is their disavowal of it. We dont spout about ourselves. Were not that sort, Featherstone says. They dont take selfies; even on their first date, the only picture they took was of a gull. Photographs of them are rare.

Neither of them has ever followed a specific diet; not Atkins, 5:2, keto nor intermittent fasting. In many ways, they are unlikely authors of a diet book. And this, I suspect, is at the heart of the pressure they feel a double bind in which the story of their efforts to lose weight speaks to their community, but also creates an expectation for a narrative of progress. I sometimes worry what people will think of us. Like, why the hell are you pushing a diet book when youre not a skinny minny? Featherstone says. Because its the accepted norm that people lose weight, [then] they do a book. But were still in that process.

In newspaper articles, Allinson and Featherstone are often described as two fat chefs. They laugh uproariously when I point this out. Do you know we have a little list of the things we have been described as? Featherstone says. Fat. Middle-aged. Jolly. Allinson chuckles. We found it really funny, Featherstone says. Then the tone abruptly shifts.

Sadly, it is the way that some people talk about people of our size. Fat is a word that people will use willy-nilly to describe people of size. And I personally hate it, Featherstone says. It makes me angry deep inside

In March, the pair revealed they were aiming to lose 190kg (30 stone) between them. Featherstone had so far lost 44kg and Allinson 31kg. Im curious as to how they divvied up the target. Featherstone says: We came up with that between us. They didnt figure out how much each wanted to lose? Weve never really had a target, Allinson says. Because I think that can put a lot of pressure on.

And we dont do pressure, Featherstone adds. But surely two books in the space of a year put pressure on them? We dont intentionally put pressure on ourselves, Allinson says. Is a better way of putting it, Featherstone nods.

Im curious to know if they have lost more weight since the first book, but Featherstone says that the numbers are still what they were.

The body of any diet author will always be taken as a measure of success. Is that on their mind? It cant not be, Featherstone says. We think about things a lot. Its why were both so anxious all the time We still struggle. Even now. We kind of fluctuate. We have a steady loss. And while fluctuation and steadiness may seem at odds with each other, no doubt those who are sharing their weight loss journey will relate to the apparent contradiction.

Weve always been really honest and open about it, Allinson says.

They have had an intense and challenging year, adjusting not just to huge public interest, but also to the loss of Allinsons mum. Or, as Featherstone puts it: Weve had a great year, but weve also had a shit year. Allinsons mother died in January, the day after the couple told her they were going to publish a book. When Allinson says this, her eyes are wet and shiny.

Has anyone got a tissue? Featherstone interjects. I assume she is asking for Allinson, but she quickly adds: Because Im wearing mascara and I know whats going to happen. Allinson fishes in her bag and passes her one. They happily rattle off their differences Allinson is organised, decisive and likes strong tea; Featherstone is disorganised, indecisive, talkative and takes her tea milky. But the two of them seem to understand and meet each others needs.

They met nearly 15 years ago, having seen each others profiles on Gaydar Girls. But I didnt message you for ages, Featherstone says. When they met, they got in the car and ended up in Rhyl, north Wales.

Within six months, Featherstone had moved into Allinsons family home in New Brighton, Wallasey, where the pair still live with Allinsons older sister, Lisa, and her dad (whom the three of them look after) as well as two cats. Ive been in the same house for how long is it? Forty-five years, Allinson says. Before this one, she lived in the house over the back, which was her nans B&B. I am trying to picture how the house just an old Victorian one, Allinson says must have felt with five adults in it. When they met, Allinson ran her own restaurant, Cromwells, in nearby Irby. Featherstone quickly took on front of house. Food was the driver of their relationship, and they went into work even when the restaurant was closed. I washed the pots. I wanted to learn how this whole thing worked. In their downtime, they watched, among other things, Two Fat Ladies (they have the DVDs) and ate lots of Chinese takeaways.

While Allinson had been to catering college and had gone on to be the head chef for the Boddingtons chain, Featherstone had left school at 16. She had helped a bit in her parents florist shop and did voiceovers at a radio station in Liverpool, but food and Allinson provided a place that felt like home.

The restaurant was hard work. Things came to a head when Allinsons mum, who did the accounts, had a brain haemorrhage. Within a few months, the restaurant closed, as they focused on caring for her. We grieved for the restaurant, Featherstone says. It hit us hard. Next they worked for a Canadian IT company which, if Ive understood correctly, speeds up the internet by using datacentres on the edge of the cloud. It sounds an unlikely fit, but both women say they wanted nothing to do with food after the restaurant shut. In between were months where we didnt do a whole bunch of much.

Then, in January 2016, Lisa persuaded them to go to Slimming World. They began to create the dishes that went into the first book in the tiny family kitchen that, they say, is smaller than the toilet in the offices of their London publisher, where we are meeting.

They photographed their food at the dining room table. It must have been a squeeze, but Allinsons mum said: If you want to do it, do it well. Allinsons dad lost a stone unintentionally just by eating their food. Then at Slimming World one week, they heard another person discussing a Pinch of Nom recipe and realised how far they had come. At that point, no one in the group knew who they were.

Now they have a test kitchen, a team of 11 and an army of followers they are scared to think about. Featherstone, Allinson and their family all eat the food they make. When people are trying to diet, and the rest of the family dont need to, it can feel as if youre on your own, Featherstone says. She knows this from personal experience. At her all-girls school, she was the tall one and the big one and dieted to fit in, but was bullied. The experience of being different hardened me, she says. But I suspect this hardening is a work-in-progress.

I am surprised, when I get home, and reread the articles that describe Allinson and Featherstone as two fat chefs, to see that the person who chose those words was none other than Featherstone herself. I email her to ask why, given how the description angers her, and she replies that it was a way of saying it first Its an ownership thing. I can call myself fat but no one else has that right.

Over the past six months, however, something has shifted; her feelings have evolved. Its not a word I like any more.

Keeping the weight off in the new year (for good) – WZZM13.com

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich A New Year means a new you.

Its no wonder that weight-loss is often cited as the number one New Years resolution for Americans.

But even if we manage to lose a few pounds, sometimes keeping weight off can be just as difficult.

According to Leslie Heinberg, Ph.D., of Cleveland Clinic, the first step in weight loss success is to understand that the journey to weight management is not a one-and-done approach.

The way we have set things up, in our own mind, is that you lose weight, you go on a diet, and hooray, youre done, she said. Unfortunately, thats not the finish line thats just the starting line to a much longer, and somewhat more complicated challenge, which is keeping that weight off over time.

Without actively working on weight-loss maintenance, Dr. Heinberg said the vast majority of people will regain their weight, because their bodys biology will fight to get back to its old weight.

Thats why its essential to find a way to work more movement into your lifestyle.

Physical activity is helpful when it comes to losing weight, but where it really is powerful, is fighting against that biology, said Dr. Heinberg. Ongoing physical activity, and quite a bit of it, 150-250 minutes of moderate physical activity a week, is what seems to be very helpful in weight-loss maintenance.

When it comes to weight-loss, there is no such thing as a quick fix. To achieve long term weight loss, slow and steady wins the race.

Making lifestyle changes that you can keep up, past January, is key.

It took quite a while for weight to come on, and it takes a long time for weight to come off, said Dr. Heinberg. Diets that are extreme, and that promise an enormous amount of weight-loss in a short period of time, are the ones associated with the highest dropouts, and often times, more weight regain.

Dr. Heinberg reminds people there is not a one-size-fits-all approach to weight loss. Many people try several approaches before finding a plan that works for them.

She recommends enlisting the help of a healthcare professional to help figure out what works for you.

Weight-loss balloon company gets another $34m in funding – The Boston Globe

Allurion Technologies has obtained another $34 million in funding as the venture-backed Natick startup prepares to seek US approval this year for its medical device to help people lose weight.

The sum includes $20 million in venture capital from investors such as New Hampshire-based Novalis LifeSciences and Boston-based Romulus Capital. It also includes a $14 million growth capital term loan from Bridge Bank that Allurions chief executive said was a vote of confidence in its product, a polyurethane balloon that stays in a patients stomach for four months.

This funding allows us to continue growing at a very fast pace, said Dr. Shantanu Gaur, the chief executive, who cofounded Allurion in 2009 with a fellow Harvard Medical School graduate after they realized that obesity was the common denominator in many diseases.

Allurion grew to 100 employees from 60 last year and invested $1.5 million in a new manufacturing plant in Natick. Its device has already won approval in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and Asia, and the company has sold 20,000 of them in 25 countries since 2016.

The product, called the Elipse Balloon, is part of a wave of medical devices that have been developed in the Boston area and elsewhere to combat the worsening obesity epidemic.

During a 20-minute office visit to the doctor, a patient swallows a large capsule that contains a deflated polyurethane balloon attached to a thin catheter. The doctor then fills the balloon with about 2 cups of water and pulls the catheter out of the patients mouth.

The balloon sits in the stomach for four months, curbing appetite. Then it collapses and leaves the body the old-fashioned way.

In one of the largest gastric balloon data sets ever collected, 1,623 patients across 19 weight loss centers in seven countries lost, on average, 28 pounds after swallowing the Elipse, according to Allurion.

The company has tested the device on 416 patients in the United States and plans to seek clearance by the Food and Drug Administration this year based on the results, Gaur said.

If the FDA approves the device, a patient would have to pay about $4,000 out of pocket for the balloon as well as a smart scale that connects to an Allurion app, and for coaching by a nutritionist.

While the product would not be covered by health insurance, the cost is considerably less than for gastric-bypass surgery, which is covered by some insurers but not others, Gaur said.

Allurion had previously raised $36 million in venture capital.

Marijn Dekkers, the founder and chairman of Novalis LifeSciences and former chief executive of Bayer and Thermo Fisher Scientific, said Allurion is taking a cutting-edge approach to one of the worlds largest unmet medical needs.

A study published last month by the New England Journal of Medicine predicted that by 2030, nearly one in two adults in the United States will be obese. Obesity is defined as a body mass index of 30 or higher.

While the gyms a great place to break a good sweat and even torch fat to lose weight it doesnt have to be your preferred choice. It certainly wasnt 35-year-old Arun Kumars, who lost 12 kgs in 4 months without ever stepping inside a gym.

Says Arun, up until a couple of years ago, I was not bothered about getting fit at all. I was a big foodie and also a lazy couch potato. Id eat what I want and when I wanted to eat it. This what mainly comprised a lot of sweets, junk food and soft drinks. I knew my weight was going up pretty rapidly and my body was also kind of getting out of shape but as I said, I was not bothered.

Over time, I realised that I was becoming the laughing stock amongst my friends owing to my weight and tummy. Id counter their jokes and remarks but theyd still make me feel bad. At the same time, I still couldn't control my eating habits to bring about a change. My favourite clothes stopped fitting me as well but my love for biryani remained endless, he adds. My wake-up call arrived shortly after returning from a vacation with my friends. I realised how fat and chubby I was looking in the pictures we'd taken during the trip. I used to be skinny during my college days, and comparing that to this my body and face being complemented with layers of fat was really disappointing.

It made me comprehend the reality of where my life was going and also made me set on losing weight to take control over my body. Consequently, I trimmed from 90 kgs to 78 kgs by following the below weight loss plan.

My weight loss plan was only made up of two things and none of these two things involved going to the gym and lifting weights.

I followed these 2 practises to lose weight:

Say no to sugar: The most important thing that I did was say a big fat no to sugar in every form. No sweets, no soft drinks, no ice creams and no chocolates. Initially, it was difficult to stay away from sugar, but within a week my cravings for sugar reduced.

Other than these two practices, I didn't follow any other workout routines or even supplements. But I was conscious about what I was eating. The below diet plan will give you a better perspective on the same:

I started avoided junk food and eating mostly home-cooked food such as rice, wheat rotis and veggies. And, whenever possible, Id eat carb-free foods such as egg whites and chicken.

Early morning: A glass of warm water

Breakfast: Two dosas or three idlis

Lunch: Three chapatis or a bowl of boiled rice with some veg curry and two egg whites

Evening snacks: A bowl of fruit salad

Dinner: Two omelettes and a banana or an apple

Post-dinner: A glass of warm water

I rarely craved any junk food during this phase but if I did crave something a lot, I didnt stop myself from eating it. I also ate biryani, once a week, I considered it as a reward to myself for all the effort I am putting in!

At the end of 4 months, the result really made me feel very good about myself. But I started feeling like I am looking weak, and decided that nows the right time to hit the gym to build some muscles and develop stamina. So, now I maintain my weight by going to the gym regularly and taking more protein in my food in the form of egg whites and chicken.

Singing sensation Adele was recently photographed on vacation on a beach in Anguilla, and the photos left some fans in a state of shock. The English singer has lost a dramatic amount of weight, allegedly to the tune of over 40 pounds.

The Someone Like You singer was vacationing with fellow Brit stars Harry Styles and James Corden. While on the beach, she donned a polka dot dress, and while clutching a cocktail drink, went for a dip in the Caribbean Sea.

Adele, who has been known in the past for her full figure, was widely praised for slimming down in recent years. However, these pics left some wondering if shed gone too far. Some praised her for shedding the pounds and others suggested we all just leave her alone.

Wong is known for getting actors into shape and has personally trained Adeles friend, Jennifer Lawrence.

Adele is reportedly very private about her workout sessions, choosing to do them at home behind closed doors rather than in a public gym. She follows the regimes and plans at home using videos and tutorials. The results in the last six months have been immense.

Healthy eating, such as cutting down on sugar, along with performing pilates, has also been instrumental in her weight loss.

Opinions have been very mixed over Adeles most recent weight loss, with many people online lamenting the loss of the singers plump figure and natural curves.

Its that time of year again Christmas is over and many of us are considering our resolutions for the year ahead.

One of the most common New Years resolutions is to lose weight. Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is important for many aspects of health and wellbeing, but losing weight is not always easy.

Nutritionist and weight loss specialist Kim Pearsonsees many clients in her clinic who have attempted to lose weight but haven't been successful, despite sticking to a healthy diet.

Here Kim shares with us five reasons why you might be struggling to lose weight even though youve stuck to your diet.

Youre retaining water

This is a common issue for women around the time of their period. Note what time of the month it is, its not uncommon to go up by a couple of pounds just before you are due on.

Are these 'healthy' foods making you gain weight?

Dont panic, this should last long and you should find your weight continues to drop once this time of the month has passed.

Youre gaining muscle

A good weight loss programme should include optimal amounts of protein to ensure that the weight youre losing is fat, not muscle. You may find youre eating more protein than you did previously and even without exercising, this can result in your muscle mass increasing. This is a good thing! Bariatric surgery effective for Wisconsinites looking to lose weight – WEAU

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) - Obesity in Wisconsin is becoming a serious health issue.

For the past 10 years, the Bariatric Surgery Department at Mayo Eau Claire has offered more than just surgery and dietary counseling to its patients. The program works to get people to lose weight and transform their lives.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 26% of those in the Badger State were considered obese. That's people with a Body Mass Index, or BMI, of 30 or greater.

Wendy Payson is the Bariatric Coordinator for Mayo Eau Claire. She said being obese can have serious health consequences.

It puts them at an increased risk for high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, heart disease, acid reflux, things of that nature, she said.

The Bariatric Surgery Program at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire helps patients who are dangerously obese.

We are a kind of multi-disciplinary group that includes behavioral therapist, dietitians, exercise physiologists, bariatricians and family practice doctors that are part to help patients lose weight throughout the program, Payson said.

The program works to get people to lose weight and keep it off.

Dr. Chris Hower is the Director of Bariatric Surgery. He explained the two most common procedures done at Mayo Eau Claire.

The sleeve gastrectomy is making your stomach like a banana or long thin stomach, he said. The roux-en-y gastric bypass not only makes a small stomach but it also rearranges some intestines so there is some malabsorption.

Dr. Hower says the reason patients are so successful after having a Bariatric surgery, is the commitment to life style changes, the psychical changes that the surgery provides and the support system offered by the program.

Typically the average patient one-year post operation from surgery will lose about 70% of their excess weight, Hower said. Weve also followed patients 10 years later and they've still kept over 50% of that weight off.

Hower says the best part of this program is seeing how patient's lives are completely changed.

Other benefits of having surgery, long term patients are living longer, there are fewer cardiovascular diseases, meaning less people are dying from heart attacks that undergo weight loss surgery, Hower said. There are actually less cancers in women who undergo weight loss surgery.

Its a perennial question: Can you lose weight without exercise? Lets start with this: Exercise is terrific for your body and mind, in so many ways. It cuts down on your risk for a multitude of diseases and can lower your incidence of depression, anxiety, and other mental health problems, as well as boost your energy, help you sleep, and more. It can also help you get and keep a fitter, slimmer body. So exercise = health, and we should all move our bodies every day.

That said, when it comes to losing weight, what you eat is keyand studies show there are plenty of weight loss strategies that have nothing to do with exercise. Check out these 14 science-backed, slim-down tips.

When youre at home, eat from smaller plates and bowls. Youll likely take in fewer calories, and it tricks your brain into thinking youre chowing down on more than you actually are. (Do the opposite when youre eating healthy foods, like salads or roasted veggiesthen it makes sense to supersize those dishes!). Another important tip: Dont eat from packages of anything, even those healthier chips or crackers. Portion some out into a dish, and put the bag or box away.

When eating out, portion control can be a tougher challenge, given the giganto serving sizes in restaurants, so before you go, think about how youre going to handle that. You can order an appetizer and small salad instead of an appetizer and main dish; you can split a dish with a friend; or you can ask for a to-go box right up front, and put half your meal in there before you dig in. Like fiber, protein naturally helps you feel full by influencing the production of satiety hormones, says Ansel. It takes a long time to digest, so youre unlikely to go scrounging for a snack after a protein-rich meal. And heres a neat trick: Protein also takes more energy to digest than, say, fat or carbs, so you dont store as many of its calories. For maximum impact aim for 20 grams per meal from lean proteins such as fish, chicken, turkey, eggs, and low fat dairy.

Its well-established that sleep deprivation can lead to weight gain. It comes down to hormones: Sleep deprived people produce more ghrelin, an appetite-stimulating hormone. And they produce less leptin, the hormone that tells you when youve eaten enough. Theres also evidence that the overly-sleepy eat more calories, and more comfort-food-carbs. And its no surprise that when youre exhausted, its harder to control your impulses (meaning, grabbing cookie after cookie may seem like a fine idea).

Im a fan of getting on the scale a few times a week, says Ansel. For a lot of people, weighing yourself can be stressful, but it can provide some really important feedback before things start to snowball. You dont have to weigh yourself every day, but stepping on the scale two to three times a week can help you nip weight gain in the bud, so you dont have to take drastic action with your diet later.

Sometimes when you think youre hungry, youre actually thirstymaybe even slightly dehydrated. So in between meals, before you nosh on a snack try drinking a big glass of water. Its also a good idea to do that before a meal: It leads to greater weight loss, one study showed. And carry a bottle with you throughout the day, to sip as you go.

Its unclear whether sugar in and of itself makes you gain weight, says Ansel. But one thing is for sureit tends to travel in foods that have way too many calories. Whether its soda, sweetened lattes, or dessert, these should be the first foods to go if youre trying to slim down. And remember, the sweet stuff is hidden in all sorts of foodsketchup, bread, salad dressing, and so on.

Its a simple way to take in less calories overall. But theres another important reason to follow this rule: Drinking calories, rather than eating them, is less satisfying and doesnt lead to the same feeling of fullness, research shows. So thats another reason why drinking your caloriesespecially sugary bevscan lead to weight gain.

In other words, slow down. Your brain needs to catch up with your mouth and send the signal that youre full, and thats harder when youre speeding through your meal. Also, studies have shown that when youre distracted, you tend to eat more. So stash your phone, turn off the TV, and pay attention to what youre eating.

A small study showed that prolonged chewing at lunch leads to a eating fewer snacks later in the day. Its worth noting, though, that many of the study participants reported that they really didnt enjoy the lunch, with all that chomping. So worth a try, but it may or may not work for you.

One study found that obese people are more likely to keep food around in highly visible locations. So do the opposite, especially with stuff that you dont want to be munching all the time. Meaning, that bowl of apples? Fine to keep it in your eye line. The bags of chips? Nuh uh.

A recent study found that kids and teens who drink diet beverages eat more calories during the day. This is just one of several studies connecting diet drinks to weight gain. So againwater is a great bet! Want to make it more interesting? Get a water bottle infuser, an easy way to add fruit.

When youre stressed, your levels of the hormone cortisol spike (its that fight-or-flight response). And some older studies have shown that people tend to eat more if theyre high cortisol reactors (you know, those people who particularly tend to lose their chill under stress). So to avoid that nom-nom-nom reaction (and to protect your health in so many other ways), take time each day to do something to lower the stress temperature, whether its meditation, exercise, or sitting quietly with a good book.

It may not be sexy, but study after study has shown that writing down what you eat is one of the most effective weight loss tools out there, says Ansel. Whether its in a journal, using the notes app on your phone, or your favorite weight loss app, recording what you eat is the single best way to identify those sneaky little ways you might be overdoing it.
