Al Roker is the picture of fitness and health. Hes lost over a hundred pounds since gastric bypass surgery he had in 2002. But it hasnt been a cakewalk by any means. Roker has made it clear in the past that losing this weight, keeping it off, and at times gaining and losing again is a daily struggle.

Find out what caused the popular Today Show host to finally commit to losing his excess weight and whats helping him keep it off.

Roker has dealt with weight issues since his childhood. He loved to eat and just couldnt help himself. In his 2012 book, Never Goin Back, the Today Show personality remembers when his weight began to bother him when Bill Cosbys Fat Albert animated series surfaced on TV.

He told NPR in 2013, Im black, Im fat, my name is Albert. It was the embodiment of who I had become. It led to a great deal of teasing by his classmates, which Roker said he learned to navigate by being the funny fat kid.

Roker says his girth became like a third person in his marriage to journalist Deborah Roberts of ABC News. Roberts would urge Roker to get fit, causing endless conflict between them, as Roker revealed in an article for Today.

Its one thing if youre both overweight, but when were talking about couples who are mixed-weight (I love the term mixed-weight couples; Ive heard of mixed-race couples, but mixed-weight?!), it plays a big deal, especially if one person is active and healthy and the other person is a bit of a couch potato.

The 65-year-old finally decided to have gastric bypass surgery in 2002, after promising his father, dying of lung cancer, that he would lose weight.

[My father] said, Look, Im not going to be here for your kids. And youve got to be here for your kids. So I want you to promise me youre going to lose weight, the morning show staple wrote in his book.

I dont know if youve ever had to make a deathbed promise to someone you love, but if you have, you know the kind of guilt and massive responsibility I felt in that moment.

After the surgery, Roker lost 100 pounds. In 2011, his mother was hospitalized, causing him to revert to unhelpful eating habits. He gained back 40 pounds by the time she passed away.

I was out of my routine, commuting [to Long Island] to see her, and feeling guilty, Roker told Parade in 2012. I consoled myself with food. I got blindsided and, I think, to a certain extent, I got cocky.

Roker told Today in 2013, Im thrilled about where I am, Roker said. Life is terrific; I wouldnt trade it for a moment. But you always wonder where you would be if x hadnt happened. Im thrilled that Ive finally got to this place at 58 years old. I finally got it figured out. I feel good about it.

Roker has been able to maintain his weight by working on his strength and watching how much he eats. He saw recent success with more dropped pounds through the Keto diet.

He told Peopleearly this year that he was able to lose 10 pounds in two weeks on the Keto diet. The worst part? Having to avoid bread.

The toughest part is not eating bread, Roker said. Last weekend I was in Paris to drop my daughter off at school for her sophomore year. I think its the first time in 35 years going to Paris, but I did not have any croissant or any bread.

Weight loss for diabetes: Heres how to shed those extra kilos – TheHealthSite

Weight loss is the top priority of millions across the world and for good reasons. One of the essential reasons behind the importance of shedding those extra kilos is diabetes, a hormonal condition characterized by high blood sugar. Affecting a large cross section of the global population, diabetes has been linked with obesity by scientists. In fact, there are innumerable studies stating that 9 in 10 people who suffer from type-2 diabetes is overweight.

It is not yet clear if there is any cause-and-effect link between obesity and diabetes. However, several studies have proved that being overweight can increase your risk of this condition and managing weight is essential for people suffering from high blood sugar levels.

Unfortunately, losing weight is a tough task for diabetics. Diabetics are unable to use insulin hormone in their body efficiently. This, in turn, leads to the increase of fat tissues in the body. Increased fat, on the other hand, reduces the bodys capacity use insulin sufficiently. By losing weight, you are improving your bodys glucose tolerance and insulin resistance while reducing the risk of common diabetes-related complications like eye diseases (retinopathy), neuropathy (nerve damage especially to your feet, which may lead to amputation), kidney failure, liver damage, high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease.

According to the experts, if you are a diabetic, you need to target the fat around your waist first as central obesity is the greatest risk to your diabetes and its effects. Here are few ways in which a diabetes patient can lose weight.

While starting your weight loss plan, start by assessing what you are currently eating. To achieve this, the aim should be to strike a right balance between carbohydrates, fats and protein. You should cut back on carbohydrates from your diet. This is because, in order to digest carbohydrates, your pancreas has to release insulin, the hormone which is insufficiently produced or inefficiently used in case of a diabetic. If you have to eat carbohydrates make sure choose the ones that are less likely to spike your sugar level. Have carbs in the form of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Other than cutting off carbohydrates, there is another step that you need to take in terms of food: Adding enough protein to your diet sufficiently. At least 20 percent of your diet should include lean protein, which is found in fish, tofu and chicken. When it comes to fat, leave out bad fats (saturated fats) and include good fats (unsaturated fats) found in canola oil flaxseeds, nuts, etc. Filling up on high fibre foods can help in keeping your blood sugar steady and your tummy full, reducing the frequency of meals. Consulting a nutritionist about your diet regimen is a must for a person living with diabetes, especially if he or she needs to shed those extra kilos.

This is a must foe your weight loss mission to be successful. If you stay fit and active, you have a better chance of reducing your weight and controlling diabetes. Exercise is considered as probably the best way of managing type-2 diabetes because muscles can use glucose without insulin when youre exercising. Workouts can also make your insulin more active, which helps your cells use glucose more effectively. People suffering from diabetes and obesity are at a high risk of developing blocked arteries, which can lead to stroke or heart attack. Exercise helps in reducing bad cholesterol level in the body, which is blocking your blood from passing through the arteries.

Study shows Americans’ effort to lose weight have limited success – Healthcare News Reports

A new study has revealed that Americans have been trying hard to lose the extra pounds by reducing their food intake, exercising,drinkingplenty of water and trying out new diet butthey were not reaching their goals.

As per federal survey report the number of people who tried to put down their weight was 34% during the period 1999-2000 and it increased to 42% during the period 2015-2016. The average BMI was 28 during the period 1999-2000 while it increased to 29.4 during the period 2015-2016. The people surveyed were in the age range from 40-64 years. Dr. Lu Qi, senior researcher and director of the Tulane University Obesity Research Center in New Orleans, said that although the efforts for weight loss have been increasing, obesity is not decreasing as expected. Qi said that the reason for this might be that people are not trying out their diet in an effective way.

Qi said that the most famous weight-loss strategy was eating in lesser quantity. But by doing this people tend to include fattening foods even though they reduce their food intake. There was decrease in food intake but no decrease in calorie intake. The chief of obesity surgery at the Lenox Hospital, Mew York City, Dr. Mitchell Roslin, said that research has shown that reducing food intake and exercise was not enough for a long-term weight loss plan. When one eats less, it signals the brain that one is sick. When the brain realizes that one is sick and has lost weight, it does work to put that lost weight back. So this does not help in shedding the extra weight. So eating right is also important for maintain a healthy heart as well as to avoid diabetes.

The director of Obesity, Metabolism and Nutrition Institute at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Lee Kaplan said that true care for this condition of obesity may require therapies or medications which will assist on the self-regulation of fat in the body.

Maintaining the ‘Miami image’: The reality of disordered eating at a party school – Miami Student

The women interviewed for this piece are only referred to by their first names for the sake of their privacy.

Taylor pays careful attention to every detail. Tanned and unbelievably slim, she practically floats through the crowd, attracting the eyes of all around her. Girls like her are omnipresent; you see her at every house party, fraternity function and, despite her hangover from the previous night, at Brick Street Bar & Grill on Saturdays.

Everyone knows someone like Taylor. She embodies the Miami University image that so many strive to reach. But obtaining this image has a price.

Taylor starves herself until her hands shake, even under thick mittens. Her face is broken out from purging every White Claw and Trashcan from the weekend before. Her chapped knuckles, sore from forcing herself to vomit, sting when she applies Neosporin to them. As she walks to class on Monday, her skin has an almost translucent, greenish tone in the frigid Ohio winter.

Eating disorders like Taylors are common at Miami.

Rose Marie Ward, associate dean of the graduate school and a specialist in eating disorders and party culture, explained that one in five students at Miami have an eating disorder.

Not only do Miami students exhibit binge eating disorder (BED), the most common eating disorder in the United States, they also experience anorexia nervosa, a disorder that causes an individual to refuse food to lose weight, and bulimia, a disorder characterized by a compulsion to vomit or over-exercise to lose weight.

Even more common on college campuses are undiagnosed disordered eating behaviors. Among these is drunkorexia, a behavioral pattern of starvation, purging, or both that occurs before pre-planned binge drinking.

An eating disorder is something totally different from drunkorexia. An eating disorder is a pervasive part of their life that [sufferers] feel they cant control, Ward said. An eating disorder has to be diagnosed by a clinician. Drunkorexia is more related to alcohol disorders and alcohol use.

With the spread of unattainable body ideals across social media, there has been a rise in disordered eating behavior among college-age people. Miami students are feeling the impact, especially at an intersection with the universitys reputation as a party school.

I do think the label and the celebration of [disordered eating] is more common now, Ward said, explaining that Miami has had the reputation of a party school as long as she has been teaching at the university.

Ward said Miami is an ideal place to study the convergence of disordered eating and party culture because of the so-called Miami image.

You have to come off in a certain way, pass off as a certain way, have to be good looking, Ward said. People are going to make choices about their food, their exercise, because the other part of the Miami image is that you party with no consequences [i.e. weight gain].

The effect of eating disorders extends outside of a clinicians office. The prevalence of disordered eating at Miami is evident at parties and bars. Many women are not afraid to speak openly about these behaviors.

Emerging from a stall in the Brick Street Bar bathroom, the smell of spilled alcohol and vomit fresh in the air, Maddie opened up.

Oh yeah, its pretty normal, the first-year said, gesturing to the toilet behind her. Ill [intentionally vomit] a few times depending on how much [alcohol] I have.

I [intentionally fast] almost every day, Maddie added. Just to make up for [weekend binging]. You have to eat more not to pass out, but you also want to look hot.

Annie, a first-year, nodded as she stood next to Maddie with her eyes locked on the mirror.

[I vomit] to not bloat, she said. You dont want bloating [from alcohol]. I dont drink beer because of that.

Annie admitted that she struggled with an eating disorder beginning in high school and was working on her recovery process.

Its hard here [at Miami], she said. Everyone does it here, so I get triggered, like, all the time.

Others in eating disorder recovery have reported the same feelings.

I relapsed in my first semester, said sophomore Olivia while fumbling with a White Claw in each hand at a Miami fraternity party. It was fucking brutal. If anything, [the disorder] got a ton fucking worse.

Olivia said the culture in some sororities at Miami perpetuates a slim-body standard that requires unhealthy fasting, restriction or purging to maintain.

She admitted that the party culture at Miami has altered her path to recovery.

Olivia now suffers with drunkorexia and deliberately vomits after binge drinking in an effort to prevent weight gain. She acknowledged that her destructive habits have affected her both mentally and physically; even coughing can trigger her to vomit.

Its literally everyone, Olivia said, referring to the number of eating disorder survivors at Miami who relapse.

Shruti Ram Shankar, a Miami clinical psychology doctoral student specializing in eating disorders, said theres a reason that students are struggling with the combination of a drinking and disordered eating culture: people dont acknowledge theres a problem.

Clinically, [drunkorexia] is a real diagnosis which is actually called comorbid eating and substance use disorder, Ram Shankar wrote in an email to The Miami Student. Drinking and dieting are both common in college and pathological behaviors such as abusing alcohol or drugs, restricting your diet or binge-eating can go unnoticed or [be] seen as socially acceptable.

Despite common belief, she explained, drunkorexia and eating disorders arent exclusive to women. The pervasive nature of this issue across every demographic on campus may contribute to the difficulty in acknowledging a problem.

All groups, all gender identities do it to conform [to party culture], Ward said.

Ward identified that disordered eating habits do not differ between men and women, but the factors that lead them to develop disordered eating behaviors are usually different.

People who identify as men are more likely to say theyre [using disordered eating behavior] to increase their buzz, and so theyre not going to drink a lot because [they] get drunk quicker, she said.

Ram Shankar acknowledged this occurrence as well.

Males are less likely to engage in traditional disordered-eating behaviors like vomiting and using laxatives and are more likely than women to engage in bulking, increased caloric intake in order to build muscle, or cutting, which is restricting calories to reduce fat and achieve a more leaner body type, she wrote.

Although many suffer from disordered eating or exercise habits, there is a notable reluctance among men to speak on the issue. The Student reached out to five men in bars and at fraternity parties around campus, but they either did not respond to the questions or did not recognize a problem with disordered eating behaviors among Miami men.

Because eating disorders and drunkorexia are so common at Miami, it can be difficult to recognize when healthy habits become disordered behavior.

Miami Universitys Student Counseling Service and psychology clinic offer support services to students dealing with an eating disorder and mental health issues, including substance abuse. However, Ward doesnt believe its only the administrations responsibility to handle the situation.

As a culture, we need to stop valuing this, she said. [Shifting attitudes is] really us changing the norms on campus. [We] need a culture shift.

Mary Cain Still Calling on Nike to Hold Third-Party Probe Into Disbanded Oregon Project – WWD

Two-and-a-half weeks after elite runner Mary Cain aired allegations of forced weight loss and public shaming in a Nike-supported running program, she is still calling for a third-party investigation into the matter.

Her op-ed video I Was the Fastest Girl in America for The New York Times had more than six million views as of Monday afternoon. Cain, who signed up with the now-disbanded Nike Oregon Project in 2013, claimed the programs coach Alberto Salazar publicly shamed her for not being thin enough and bred an eating disorder culture. She exited the program in 2016 after allegedly telling Salazar she has been cutting herself as a form of a self-harm, essentially getting no reaction and phoning her parents to share her problems.

In late September, Salazar was handed a four-year ban from the U.S. Anti-Doping Association for orchestrating and facilitating prohibited doping conduct at Nikes Oregon Project. Nike Inc. executives initially stood by Salazar and then back-peddled days later, cutting ties with the former Olympian. In response to Cains video, Nike challenged Cain in a statement issued earlier this month for not raising her concerns in April when she was looking to rejoin the program. The company also announced plans to launch an immediate investigation to hear from former Oregon Project athletes.

But Cain said Friday, I havent heard much more beyond [that and] they dont seem willing to do a third-party investigation even though I called for it. There really hasnt been much change from their platform and position, so there really hasnt been from mine either.

Should Nike commit to a third-party investigation, Cain said she would happily cooperate. As for whether there will be any legal ramifications against Nike, she said, I dont really know going forward. The truth is a lot of that Im keeping closer to my chest.

A Nike spokesman did not acknowledge requests for comment Monday about the status of the investigation, with specific questions including whether there will be a third-party investigation.

Speaking in broader terms, the recent Fordham grad said she is a big believer in Corporate Social Responsibility in that companies are not people. They are made up of people. The individuals within a company should step up in situations like this and really demand change. If they really believe in a product that they are trying to sell, then they should make sure they are doing it responsibly. And they should make sure that the people they are using for advertising and to sell that product are being treated properly.

She added, In situations like this, a brand should step up and say, Hey, we messed up. Lets do a third-party investigation and make sure that we get this right for the future. Thats the responsible thing to do.

From her perspective, internal investigations inhibit athletes from speaking openly because thats their sponsor and how they make money. Cain said. The company has kind of victim-blamed me in a lot of their statements so that will breed mistrust and a little bit of confusion as to what they plan on doing within an investigation and whether it will be taken seriously.

On a typical day Cain runs between six and 14 miles. Her 30-hour weekly training schedule is comparable to her training at the Oregon Project time-wise, but it is more balanced. She spends 10 hours running with the remaining 20 hours related to recovery. Back then it was 30 hours of heavy training. Now there is more recovery work, physical therapy and things that are less intensive, but that are still time commitments, she said.

Asked if she has signed any new endorsement deals, Cain said, Oh, no, no, this is not why I did this. But after the op-ed broke, various brands sent her running gear. Cain declined to identify any of the companies. She said, The biggest thing that Ive appreciated is that a lot of brands have stepped up and sent me stuff. As a professional runner, for many years Ive been given Nike clothes. Its been kind of cool and fun to try something new and to do something that I havent done in six years train in non-Nike gear.

In a study of Division 1 NCAA athletes, more than one-third of female athletes reported attitudes and symptoms placing them at risk for anorexia nervosa, according to the National Eating Disorders Association. Non-athletes are also suffering from eating disorders more than 10 million American women alone. The issue has been an area of great concern in fashion where models livelihoods are tied to their physiques. Council of Fashion Designers of America first zeroed in on the problem in 2007, by circulating its Health Initiative.

All in all, Cain said she never imagined her story would break past the track world, she said. I just honestly assumed that most people were so ingrained within the system that the reaction would be 50-50 positive and negative. I just genuinely did not expect it to have such an international and national reach. Its really hopeful that it did, because it means theres more opportunity for change. But its almost sad that it did, because it shows how systemic it is and how broadly people can empathize and sympathize with such and experiences. It really does transcend sport.

Allowing that being lean and strong can be desirable for performance, Cain emphasized that taking arbitrary numbers just to be skinny does not create strength and power. And it doesnt make a good athlete. The issue with my story was not the fact that I had a coach who wanted me to lose weight. Sometimes athletes are expected to lose weight over the course of the season. But usually they work with a professional nutritionist. Theres not some arbitrary target thats trying to be reached. Its more go through the process train hard, eat well. Maybe weight would fall off, maybe it wont. Rather than almost targeting a look, she said.

Competitive sports like gymnastics, wrestling, long-distance running, figure skating, diving and dancing may have greater risks of eating disorders, since body size is highly scrutinized among some competitors. With figure skaters, ballerinas and runners, there is very much a picturesque view that the coach will put on the board to say you have to look like that. Genetics dont work like that, Cain said. Societal pressures can really force girls to look one specific way, when in reality theres not one way to be good.

Kara Goucher, Yoder Begley and other world-class runners substantiated Cains claims and pledged their support earlier this month. Goucher offered to share her own experiences via social media. Cain has yet to meet with any of them in the past few weeks, due to geographical challenges. It is really cool to know now that I have this almost second team. Ive obviously made a lot of great connections through this, said Cain, adding she periodically receives texts from supporters to see how she is doing.

While some in the media and via social media have challenged The New York Times for not recognizing Cains struggles when she was profiled for a 2015 magazine piece, Cain defended the new outlet. I was so in the system. They kept the door closed on the reporter [Lindsay Crouse], who I worked with so tightly. I was in college at the time and they made it so difficult for her to get in touch with me. Any time they were going to sit down and talk, a coach or somebody had to be in the room. The process was very difficult. The truth is it was a cult and we really didnt let people in behind the closed doors ever, Cain said. I absolutely dont hold anybody accountable for having not known what was going on. At that time, I wasnt even fully vocal with my parents let alone a reporter I didnt know.

She continued, In any situation like this, theres a tendency to cast blame whether its on the victim, family, friends, the sports world, media anything. But its most important to reflect on the fact that this is systemic and yes, in my case, there were certain bad eggs. But the truth is so much of what I went through so many people do. Its about rewriting the general, societal and cultural pressures that we put on people to make sure this doesnt happen again.

Cultural awareness, as in high school and NCAA coaches discussing the issue with their teams to make people feel comfortable about being more open and talking about their experiences, would be a good starting point, according to Cain. Longer-term, educational programs for coaches and athletes are needed, perhaps along the lines of sexual abuse awareness ones that have proven to be effective, she said. By doing so, athletes would recognize instances of abuse before they escalate to remove themselves or to cause the abuser to be removed sooner.

With an undergrad degree in business and having completed her premed requirements, Cains short-term career plans are to pursue running. On a broader sense, she aims to take on advocacy roles for women in sports with the hope of changing the system. Longer-term, Im not quite sure. In so many ways, I just love athletics. It would be really hard for me to pivot outside of the sports world. But I have so many aspirations in that regard that Im just going to let the next few years play out and take it one step at a time, Cain said.

As for whether Cain has any regrets, she said there are always regrets after situations like this. But she reminds herself that some of the issues that she suffered from at the Oregon Project are systemic throughout running. I cant say with confidence that had I not been in the NCAA or gone to another program that some of these issues wouldnt have still been a problem, she said. Based on the reaction of my piece, its really clear that a lot of girls on so many different levels within the sport go through this. My experience was particularly egregious, based on the nature of it being a professional program. But nonetheless, that does not mean it was a one-off take. Its easy to look back and say, Oh, I should have done something sooner or I shouldnt have listened to them. But I believe that everything happens for a reason. Its incredibly sad to reflect upon what happened. But I cant live my life with regret because then you can never move forward.

What is the Optavia diet? Prepared food and weight loss – TODAY

Among the hundreds of diet plans out there, a newer plan that has gained popularity as a structured path to weight loss is the Optavia diet. The diet, which lays out how many meals to eat each day and sells packaged food, has been mentioned by some well-known names.

But what is the actual diet and how much does it cost? Can it help people lose weight and keep it off?

Some people might remember the Medifast diet, which had its main claim was that it was developed with doctors. This diet is a reboot, with some additions.

There are three different diet programs from which people who want to follow the Optavia diet can choose.The variations include how many meals a day to consume and how many are pre-packaged versus made at home.

One weight loss plan, for example, is based on six small meals a day, five of which are provided to you by the company and are referred to as fuelings. The fuelings are essentially a months worth of bars, cereals, shakes, cookies, soups and snacks none of which require any real cooking. The sixth meal is made at home with regular grocery items, which the company refers to as lean and green meals. These primarily consist of protein and vegetables, with an encouragement to include some healthy fats and omega-3 fatty acids. The program provides transition meal plans when people are ready to stop using using their prepared foods.

One of the additional elements this plan provides is support. In addition to the food, there are coaches, online support and instructions that favor one habit change at a time. Finally, the company provides programs tailored to seniors and teen populations, as well.

If quick weight loss is a goal, this plan could be a solution. This is most likely a reason why it has soared in popularity. The diet may also seem easier and more achievable since the majority of meals and snacks are pre-determined.

In addition to quick weight loss, the plan eliminates alcohol and sugary drinks, which have strong ties to disease when consumed in excess. It also discourages desserts, including chocolate, as well as most solid forms of fat, including butter and coconut oil. If a participants can change their eating habits to avoid these foods as a result of following the plan, that would be an independent beneficial aspect.

Finally, the plan provides access to their online community support, weekly support calls and coaching. For some people, this can be an essential component to success in weight loss.

The long-term data on whether people using the plan maintained their weight loss, however, is lacking.

The diet may teach people how to lose weight with their food, but what happens when they have to make their own meals? This may be the biggest downfall to the Optavia diet. Although the diet removes the burden of decision-making in meal planning, it cant solve some of the other barriers to losing weight and keeping it off when it's time to transition away from eating their foods. These factors are part of what researchers call an obesogenic' environment that includes intense food marketing, availability of food and portion size, coupled with stress and sedentary lifestyle.

Though the plan factors in transition foods over time, participants are still dependent on their options to get through the weight loss period, which means they may shell out hundreds to thousands of dollars just to stay on Optavia's packaged foods. Additionally, the food options may provide the quantity that makes weight loss sense, but the food is processed and lacks nutrient density. Supplements are recommended to enhance nutrition during the diet.

People who follow the diet strictly will probably lose weight. This has less to do with the program and more to do with the fact that any low-calorie plan will increase your chances of weight loss. But, its the long-term data that should be more important since sustaining weight loss is the ultimate success barometer, not the weight loss itself. In fact, studies show that weight loss maintenance can be a more challenging endeavor than weight loss. A recent analysis reviewing multiple studies showed that more than half of the weight loss the participants achieved was gained back in two years, and 80% was gained back in five years.

Losing weight is hard and very few programs that make buying their food a requirement have been shown to lead to permanent weight loss.

Though the social support on this program may be beneficial, cooking and consuming real food may be a better way to lose weight today and keep it off tomorrow.

Top nutritionist and fitness blogger Graeme Tomlinson has revealed that your choice of cup of joe could be adding over 15,000 calories to your monthly diet.

Despite this, he says you can still incorporate coffee into a healthy diet, as long as you make the right choices.

He says: "There is nothing wrong with consuming cappuccinos, lattes or caramel macchiatos.

"But if one is persistently bemoaning lack of progress regarding composition, reduction of such beverages offer a very easy opportunity to support a caloric deficit without upheaval of habitual eating habits."

In particular, Graeme highlights thatcoffee in its purest form - such as a large americano - contains no calories whatsoever.

However, if you opt for a caramel macchiato you would be consuming 250 calories, and if you have 14 of these a month that's 3500 calories.

Similarly, a large caffe latte contains 290 calories, and 14 of these a month would total up to 2660 calories.

And a large cappuccino contains 120 calories, and you'd be drinking 1680 liquid calories a month if you had 14.

Graeme points out that simply picking an americano over a macchiato, latte or cappucino could make a huge difference to your diet and maximise your weight loss results.

He says: "Selection of alternative coffee inclusive drinks at lower (or no) caloric cost can ensure that one still gets their fill of daily coffee whilst also getting more progress in their compositional goal."And while it may be difficult to ditch that creamy coffee at first, small changes can ultimately make a big difference.

Graeme adds: "Whether its coffee, a biscuit or any given food, seemingly insignificant alternations to minuscule parts of overall diet are likely to be the tweaks that finally deliver significant results.

"But more importantly, make the results last forever."

NHS tips for weight loss success

The NHS has shared their three key tips for weight loss success:

Lots of useat and drink more than we realise and do little physical activity. The result is often weight gain.

To lose weight, we need to change our current habits. Thismeans eating less even when eating ahealthy, balanced diet and getting more active.

Fad dietsand exercise regimes that result in rapid weight loss are unlikely to work for long, because these kinds of lifestyle changes can't be maintained.

Once you stop the regime, you're likely to return to old habits and regain weight.

Graeme's comments come after scientists found a cup of coffee can help the body burn calories faster.

They say it stimulates "brown fat", which burns calories to generate body heat.

Professor Michael Symonds, from the University of Nottingham, said theirs is the first study to show how coffee can affect brown fat in humans.

He said the breakthrough could help tackle the obesity crisis.

"Brown fat works in a different way to other fat in your body and produces heat by burning sugar and fat, often in response to cold," he explained.

"Increasing its activity improves blood sugar control as well as improving blood lipid (fat) levels and the extra calories burnt help with weight loss.

"This is the first study in humans to show that something like a cup of coffee can have a direct effect on our brown fat functions."
