How to Lose a Pound a Day While Eating Your Favorite Foods – Reader’s Digest

You embrace vegetables. You choose skim milk over half-and-half. You opt for whole wheat bread over white, mustard over mayo. So why does the number on the scale keep creeping up?

The possible culprits, of course, have been the subject of other successful diet books. You might be prone to wheat belly. You might lack belly-slimming MUFAs. Perhaps you suffer from an imbalance of gut bacteria. But even if you have one of these conditions, chances are excellent the following three factors are helping to pile on the pounds and make you hold on to extra weight.Start with the easy fixes listed below, and follow this mix-and-match meal plan to lose weightand keep it off.

Take the humble burger. If you make your patty with ground beef; top it with lettuce, tomato, a couple of slices of cheese, and a big squirt of ketchup; and plop it in a regular bun, thats a 570-calorie meal. If, instead, you make your burger with 95 percent lean ground beef, replace the cheese with sauted onions or mushrooms, and use less ketchup, you can slash 332 calorieswithout sacrificing any taste. Or consider the restaurant menu at TGI Fridays: The ten-ounce Jack Daniels sirloin has 130 more calories than the ten-ounce grilled sirloin. Why? Extra carbs in the sauce. These are the 12 foods that will turns your meals into calorie burners.

Sometimes calorie differences are not that dramatic: One slice of Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse Honey Wheat Bread is 120 calories; a piece of the brands Whole Grain Honey Bread is 110 calories. A Freschetta frozen pizza has 50 more calories per serving than a Newmans Own version. The large bowl of Vegetarian Minestrone soup atAu Bon Pain has 80 more calories than the small. But over time and in larger portions, these differences add up. You could gain up to 20 pounds a year by consistently adding these few extra calories to your meals. Try these 10 sneaky tricks to cut calories from your meals.

California Pizza Kitchen has a Chinese chicken salad that I used to loveuntil I found out it had 790 calories, 36 grams of fat, and 39 grams of sugar! Luckily, CPK offers half-size portions of its saladsand Im not hungry even though Im eating only half as much. How can that be? Study after study has found that the more food were served, the more we eat. In one study from Penn State University nutrition professor Barbara Rolls, PhD, people who bought a bigger portion of pasta ate nearly 50 percent more calories than those who had a regular size.

Whether its because we were told to clean your plate as kids or because we hate to waste food or we just dont notice how much were eating, this tendency to eat all were given has become a big problem. Thats because the portions were given have grown. In the mid-1950s, McDonalds sold only one size of fries, and it was one third the size of a supersize order in 2002. Burger King sold only a 3.9-ounce burger in the 1950s; in 2002, one option was more than three times that size. If the only change you make to your eating habits is to make your portions smaller, you will shed calories and pounds.

Andrew Purcell for Reader's Digest

No one wants to outlaw carbs, subsist on smoothies, or forgo dessert forever. As any serial dieter can tell you, too-restrictive plans arealmost impossible to stick with. This is my first book that includes comprehensive information for people who frequently eat out and rely on convenience foods. Youll learn how making smart choices at every meal and snack can add up to big calorie savingsand a big change on the scale. You stop eating unhealthy versions of the foods you love so you can drop the weightup to a pound a day.

With the help of registered dietitian Mindy Hermann and the ReadersDigest health team, I went aisle by aisle through the grocery store to evaluate more than 40,000 products. Then we gathered information from popular chain-restaurant menus, along with recipes for everyday dishes youre likely to cook at home, such as pancakes, chili, and spaghetti. The result: theultimate guide on what to stop eating, and what to start eating, to lose.

The heart of the diet is a three-phase plan that offers mix-and-match meals that are calorie controlled and nutritionally balanced. Kickstart, the first phase, accelerates weight loss so you can shed pounds quickly for maximum motivation. The second phase, Steady Loss, allows a slightly higher calorie allowanceyou keep losing weight while still enjoying your favorite foods so you dont feel deprived. The final part, Maintain, ensures you stick to your healthy habits to keep the weight off.

But the soul of the plan is a comprehensive guide to the best (and worst) food choices wherever you are, whether youre cooking at home, perusing the grocery store, or dining out. Across soups, salads, breakfasts, sandwiches, main dishes, drinks, desserts, and snacks, Mindy and I identified more than 700 delicious, accessible foods to eat and drop weight.

To ensure that Stop & Drop Diet was as simple and effective as I envisioned, I recruited nine Readers Digest readers and employees to try it with me. Every single one of us lost weightat least a pound a day in the first five days for the majority. Everyone agreed that the plan was easy and convenient. I needed something that would fit with my hectic schedule, says Karen Woytach, 34, a stay-at-home mom of three who lost 18 pounds after 21 days. Knowing I can go to the grocery store, stick to my budget, and feed my whole family is a huge part of why I was so successful. Angela Mastrantuono, 47, who dropped eight pounds in the first five days, couldnt believe the foods youreallowed to eat. For Donna Lindskog, 48, it was all about Stop & DropDiets flexibility. It gave me solutions I could easily find at a fast-food place or restaurant, says Lindskog, who shed 12 pounds in 12 days. I was eating more balanced meals, so I had fewer cravings. I was more satisfied while eating less.

You can lose weight if you make swaps based purely on calorie counts, but over time you might deprive yourself of valuable nutrients. I worked withregistered dietitian Mindy Hermann to make sure all the meals in Stop & Drop Diet are high in protective nutrients and low in health-harming ingredients. Power up with:

Lean protein to boost metabolismand muscle strength. Dieters on a high-protein, high-dairydiet lost more fat and gained more muscle than those eating less protein and dairy.

Fiber to keepyou full. Researchers compared a high-fiber oatmeal breakfast with low-fiber cornflakes. Oatmeal eaters had less at their next meal. Here are 30 ways to get fiber in your diet without even trying.

Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), found in nuts andolive oil, to help shed dangerous belly fat.

Calcium to burn more calories. In the Framingham Heart Study, people who ate the most dairy gained less weight and fewer inches around their waists than people who ate less dairy.

Vitamin C to boost your immune system and fat loss. Peopledeficient in vitamin C may have a harder time shedding not only colds but also pounds.

And stop eating:

Saturated andtrans fats, which raise cholesterol and increase inflammation. The 41,000 people inthe Harvard Nurses Health Study were more likely to gain weight if their dietwas high in these fats.

Sodium, which can raise blood pressure and cause bloating.

Added sugarsand other refined carbs, which contain empty calories and raise blood sugar.

I’m Dying of Thirst All Day After a Long Run. What’s Happening? – Runner’s World

After a hot run, how can I replace the fluids and electrolytes that I lose?

RW HALF & FESTIVAL: Race with the Runners World editors this October for an experience like no other.

Thirst is a signal from your body that you do not have enough fluid on board. For most runners, weight loss is equal to sweat loss, so six to seven pounds of weight loss per hour is a very high sweat rate.

If you remember the saying, a pint's a pound the whole world round you can use your weight loss to develop a fluid replacement plan.

RELATED:5 Expert Tips to Find the Best Sports Drink for Your Body

The average sweat rate is about two pints per hour, with a range of less than a pint to as much as eight pints per hour across the broad spectrum of normal runners.

Watch how to keep your water bottle cool longer on hot summer runs:

This wide range of sweat fluid loss makes it impossible to give a standardized fluid replacement recommendation for runners, as the person who sweats just one pint an hour will have considerably different fluid needs than someone like you, who sweats much more heavily. A runner who replaces too much fluid is at risk of exercise-associated hyponatremia, a life-threatening medical condition.

On the flip side, a runner who sweats heavily and does not adequately replace fluids during activity loses intravascular blood volume, reduces the ability to transfer heat from the working muscle to the body surface, and is at increased risk for exertional heat stroke (also a life threatening condition).

Finding a balance between sweat loss and safe fluid replacement is a conundrum distance runners face. Someone who sweats a pint or two per hour can usually use thirst as a guide to adequately replace fluid and avoid drinking too much during a workout or race.

A runner with a high sweat rate, however, should confirm the weight loss over several runs and in different temperature conditions, and develop a plan for fluid replacement during runs.

To feel better after runs, you probably need to replace more than 16 ounces of fluid. Most runners can easily absorb about two pints of fluid per hour during exercise, so increasing your intake may help with your post run thirst.

RELATED:8 Extreme Athletes Share How They Exercise Outside Even When Its Sweltering

You will probably have to split that quart of fluid into three or four smaller portions over each hour of your run. Sodium may also be beneficial, so using a sports drink (such as Nuun) during your runs may help. But because youre losing upwards of six or more pounds on your run, you will need to replace the rest of that fluid loss before your next run.

To start, make sure to ingest a couple of pints immediately following your run. Most foods are about half water so plan to eat a meal with extra fluid within a couple of hours. Then plan consistent fluid and meal intakes throughout the remainder of the day until your thirst subsides and you are urinating freely. This will let you know its safe to go for another run.

Runners with high sweat rates must also choose wisely when it comes to racing and training distances. If you weigh 160 pounds and lose six pints an hour without replacement, you will be down about four percent of your body weight at the end of an hour, which is generally tolerable.

However if you are out for three hours without replacing any fluids, you will lose about 11 percent of your body weight, which would put you in a severely dehydrated state and could lead to problems.

Replacing six pints over the three hours would still leave you more than five percent dehydrated and put you at greater risk for heat stroke and collapse.

Training your body to tolerate higher fluid volume ingestion while running will help you replace fluid while you are training and racingconsider getting a hydration vest, which holds more water, and drinking a bit more during your runs.

High sweat rates can be a safety risk, so it is important to know your sweat rate and your individual limits for safe running.

Overweight driver standowns at Fonterra a bigger industry issue – experts – Stuff.co.nz

CATHERINE HARRIS

Last updated14:42, August 30 2017

MARION VAN DIJK/STUFF

Fonterra trucks have always been risky for heavier drivers, management has discovered.

Fonterra's decision to stand-down overweight truck drivers is a much wider issue in the trucking industry, and maybe other industries also, experts say.

Fonterra said on Tuesdaythat someof its drivers understoodto be two wouldbe offeredalternative duties because they were much heavier than the weight safety ratingson their driver's seats safely allowed.

The company also said that 50of its drivers weighed inbetween 140 kilograms and 150kg, the seat weightmaximums on its two main typesof tanker.

Road Transport Forum chief executive Ken Shirley said that Fonterra'ssituation was not new, and that there had been court cases in New Zealand and Australia previously over the matter.

"I've been in the job for 10 years and throughout those10 years, we've had health seminars on it... And I put to you too that it's not just our industry, it's across the board.

DANIEL WHITFIELD/STUFF

Fonterra general manager of national transport and logistics Barry McColl said the company would try to get drivers to lose weight so they could get back on the roads.

"There's all manner of jobs which an employee's performance can be severely compromised with severe obesity."

Fonterra was not only right, "it'stheirresponsibility", to do something about the problem, Shirley said.

The dairy giantsaid it had been looking for some months at how to make its trucks safer, and talking with manufacturers about alternatives such as seatbelt extensions.

But there was arisk the belt would not perform to safety standards. The beltswerenot attached to the vehicle frame, as they werein cars, Fonterra general manager of national transport logistics Barry McColl said.

He said there was no intention to make anyoneredundant, and the companywastalkingwith the affected drivers about health programmes and temporarily doing other duties.

If they were unable to or chose not to lose weight, the company would offer themother work, possibly"within the depot or, indeed, upskilling them to work in manufacturing roles".

Angus McConnell, deputy secretary ofthe New ZealandDairy Workers Union, said it was a"very delicate situation" for all involved. Many of the overweight drivers would have been reliable and valued workers and it was "quite a dilemma" for some people.

At the same time, Fonterra had to comply with the law and while the union would be checking Fonterra'sinterpretation, itwasn't just a matter of fitness for the job.

"This is a little bit more complex around compliance and safety."

However, "nobody's employment is at risk at this point. There is a lot more to be worked through."

Mainfreight boss Don Braidsaid it was the first time he'd heard of a driverbeing stood down because of weight.

His company used owner-operators, so weight was not so much of an employmentissuebut the companystill took driver health seriously.

"We see them as part of the family, and we run healthy cafeterias in all our operations and we have a nutritionist in Auckland who works with drivers and any of our other people who might be overweight."

Itwas acknowledged thatdriversfacedhigher health risks, as it was a sedentary job with variable hours, shift work, and sometimespeople madepoor food choices.

NZ Post said italways ensured its drivers werefit enough to operate their routes safely.

"To help them do this we provide a range of resources and information, so they are well supported to make healthy lifestyle choices whilst they are either at work or at home."

Employment lawyer Max Whitehead said he first heard about the policyfrom a colleague of an affected truck driver who weighed 150kgand had worked for the company for seven years.

He suggestedFonterra was being discriminatory and the policy was "grossly unfair and in breach of New Zealand law".

But another employment lawyer, Susan Hornsby-Geluk, said it was arguablethat the courts would see it as discriminatory.

Obesity was not one of theprohibited grounds ofdiscrimination inthe Human Rights Act. And while an argument had been made overseas for obesity to be seen as adisability, that argument had not been establishedin New Zealand yet.

"And even if it was defined as a disability, you still have to be able to perform the functions of the position."

Fitness for work was not an uncommon employment issue, she said.

"It's not unique to the truck driving industry. There are certainly cases I've been involved in in other industries where a certain level of fitness has been a genuine requirement of the position, including where people are required to climb or move around a significant amount."

How One Dad Lost 25 Pounds By Having Balloons Put in His StomachSeriously! – Reader’s Digest

Courtesy Adeena FriedIn many ways, Eric Wilson of Dallas is your typical guy. Content with life, hes got a great job, a great wife, and adorable kids, who often speak the truth that others are too polite to mention. It was Wilsons kids (and a less-than-flattering photograph) that finally convinced the dad of three to trade in contented for ecstatic, by doing something about the spare tire he was sporting around his middle.

Like lots of us, Wilson would commit to an exercise routine for a couple of weeks, and then find himself in a workout plateau, falling off his routine, and into the arms of a large container of fries (heres why you probably have hit your own workout plateau). He knew he was overweight, but not morbidly obese. (Morbid obesity is defined as being 100 pounds over your ideal body weight, or having a body mass index (BMI) of either 40, or 35, with health-related issues). Wilsons BMI at 30.12was higher than it should have been, but not to the point where his doctor was crying code red. (Heres a quick explainer on your BMI.) I kept eating junk food, and promising myself that tomorrow would be the day, he says. Wilson found himself approaching the Big Four-0, and was starting to realize that his nasty habits were catching up with him. At the same time, his kids started in on a teasing campaign about his protruding belly and he also caught sight of himself sideways in a photo, and was aghast at what he saw. Coupled with those less-than-subtle knocks on the head was the realization that, at this weight, he wouldnt pass the physical required for him to remain on active duty with the Air National Guard. For Wilson, that was it. It was time for a change.

Wilsons wife works for Obalon, and she clued him in about a new FDA-approved process for weight loss, which uses inserted, expandable balloons, lowered into the stomach, through the mouth. The buoyant balloons take up room in the stomach, reducing appetite, and creating a feeling of fullness. They are inserted one at a time, over a three-month period. When I heard about the technology, I thought it sounded neat. I qualified for it because of my BMI, but thought, I can probably not do this, and get away with it, what am I doing? And then I looked at that photo of myself again, and realized, Ive said this a thousand times. Wilson realized he was powerless over changing his eating habits on his own, and was just kidding himself. So he committed to the procedure.

The Obalon Balloon System is designed for people who are 30 to 100 pounds overweight, and is not currently covered by health insurance plans. (The Obalon cost is around $6,000 to $9,000, based on individual factors). Unlike more radical forms of gastric bypass surgery, this non-surgical system is designed to be a temporary fix, by providing a six-month window during which people can lose weight safely, while receiving counseling and guidance are provided about weight loss and healthy eating (like these 50 best healthy eating tips of all time), and lifestyle habits. After six months, the balloons are deflated, and removed, under general anesthesia. Wilson took full advantage of his six-month window, by working with a dietitian, and listening to her advice. But first, he had to have the balloons put in.

Content continues below ad

The Obalon Procedure

The night before the procedure, Wilson was given a placebo pill. Thats just to make sure you can swallow the Obalon pill. I did not like that part, and found it difficult. I thought to myself, what am I doing? But I had committed to doing it, and was committed to seeing it through. Between the time I had first heard about the procedure and the night before it was scheduled, I had seen my BMI climb, a huge red flag. Wilson went in the next day to have the first balloon inserted. The deflated balloon is tethered to a catheter. They give you some water, and some apple sauce, if you need it. The catheter goes down your throat for around three to eight minutes. The balloon is then opened. If I had been able to laugh I would have, when the doctor said he was waiting for my balloon to hatch. Once the balloon is open, a proprietary blend of gases is sent down through the catheter, to inflate it. The balloon is then set for the altitude of the user. (Scuba diving and skydiving are not allowed while the balloons are in your stomach, but flying, and most other activities, are OK). The catheter is then disconnected, and pulled out through the mouth. The uncomfortable part for me was not being able to talk, and having the catheter tickle the back of my throat.

The Results

Wilson found the first week with the balloon a bit uncomfortable, but has adjusted since then. That first week I thought to myself, what have I done? I was uncomfortable, and had cramping. But I knew those feelings would only last a week, because thats what my doctor told me to expect. Wilson has also lost a significant amount of weight, much to the delight of his kids, who keep asking him where his tire went. I did it for me. My wife urged me to do it for me, he says. Most importantly, the balloons have motivated him to exercise. Twomonths later, with all three balloons inserted, he is now running almost daily, and is committed to making better decisions about food. He keeps a food journal, which has proven to be a powerful tool, and has lost a total of 27 pounds, plus six full inches, off his waistline. He has another four months left on the program, and a goal of losing an additional 10 pounds. Wilson says he can feel the balloons a little bit when he is lying down, and when he is hungry, but has adjusted to the feeling. He has also adjusted to the congratulations, and his new, improved health.

Ready to lose weight? Here are 13 quick, nutritionist- and- doctor approved weight loss tips.

The Defenders Takes Misty Knight One Step Closer to the Comics – Screen Rant

Warning:SPOILERS ahead for The Defenders

Marvels The Defenders not only unites four of Netflixs headlining Marvel superheroes Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) but their adventure to save New York City from the ancient evil organization known as The Hand is grand enough to bring all of their supporting players into action as well. Iron Fists love interest Colleen Wing (Jessica Henwick), Jessica Jones best friend Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor), everyones favorite nurse Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson), and Daredevils closest friends Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) and Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) all join in the chaos but none of them lose a part of themselves to the action quite like Detective Misty Knight (Simone Missick).

Misty debuted in Luke Cage as a detective working the Harlem beat who ultimately helped Cage bring down the villains plaguing Harlem, Cottonmouth (Mahershala Ali) and Diamondback (Erik LaRay Harvey). In the months since Luke Cage ended, Misty has been promoted to an all-city task force, which is how she and the NYPD are drawn into the massive web of death and destruction that the Defenders battles with the Hand leave in their wake. After welcoming a paroled Luke Cage back to Harlem, Detective Knight gets summoned to an apartment where a cache of C4 explosives are found, along with Jessica Jones as a person of interest. Her interrogation of Jones is interrupted by Matt Murdocks surprise appearance as Jessicas new attorney. From there Misty, out of loyalty to Luke and Claire, finds herself doing her best to protect the Defenders from prosecution by the NYPD.

However, there was a literal sword of Damocles hanging over Misty throughout The Defenders. Marvel fans who are familiar with Misty Knight know that her comic book incarnation has one particular trait she is known for that her live action incarnation lacked: a bionic arm. Did The Defenders bring Misty that one step closer to her comic book form?

Misty Knight debuted in Marvel Premiere #21 (1975) as a New York police officer and a friend of Colleen Wing. She lost her right arm when she saw a terrorist throw a bomb into a bank. She took the bomb, but it exploded before she could throw it. The explosion maimed her, but fortunately (in a circumstance lifted from the popular television series of the era, The Six Million-Dollar Man), Misty had a bionic arm grafted to her that was designed by Stark International. Her bionic arm allows her superhuman strength, and has been upgraded since with other weaponry. However, because the rest of Misty isnt bionic, she cant lift more weight with her bionic arm than her body can safely manage.

Misty and Colleen Wing, dubbed the Daughters of the Dragon in the comics, formed a private investigation agency called Nightwing Restorations, Ltd. and have been frequent partners of Luke Cage (Power Man) and Iron Fist. In addition, in these vintage comic book adventures, its Misty who has a longtime romantic relationship with Iron Fist, not Colleen.

Misty is on the sidelines for much of The Defenders, trying to get to the bottom of whats actually going on as Matt Murdock, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage all find themselves in her precinct after a violent battle with the Hand that destroyed the Royal Dragon Chinese restaurant in Hells Kitchen. As she gains more understanding of exactly what the Defenders are up against, Misty agrees to provide safe harbor for the Defenders closest allies, bringing Karen Page, Foggy Nelson, Trish Walker, Malcolm Ducasse (Eka Darville), Claire Temple, and Colleen Wing to her police HQ for their own safety. Even though Misty found Colleen walking around New York City with a katana sword weird, she allowed Colleen to keep it with her just in case.

When Murdock, Jones, Cage, and Wing broke out of the precinct house for their ultimate confrontation with the Hand at the Midland Circle building in Hells Kitchen, Misty took Claire with her and gave chase. Misty let the Defenders into Midland Circle so they could rescue Danny Rand and save the city from the Hand, while she agreed to stall the rest of the NYPD. When Misty learned Colleen had brought the C4 explosives which she took from evidence in order to implode the building, Misty entered the building herself.

Inside Midland Circle, Misty came upon Colleen Wing battling her sensei and one of the leaders of the Hand, Bakuto (Ramon Rodriguez), in a sword fight. When Bakuto nearly executed Claire, Misty intervened and Bakuto cut her right arm off. After Colleen was finally able to end Bakuto, she and Claire were able to rendezvous with the rest of the Defenders (minus Daredevil), and they managed to get Misty medical attention before she bled out and before the Midland Circle building was destroyed.

Finally, Colleen visited a recuperating Misty in the hospital and told her Danny Rand owned a state-of-the-art hospital that might be able to help Misty. Theres really only one direction this is heading: Misty Knight will get a robot arm. Furthermore, Simone Bissick is confirmed to be a part of season 2 of Iron Fist, so its safe to expect Misty Knight will receive her new bionic limb in that series, unless she arrives in Iron Fist season 2 already suitably armed. Given that Danny Rand accepted Matt Murdocks plea to take Daredevils place as protector of New York City, the Immortal Iron Fist will certainly need all the help he can get.

Marvels The Defenders is now available to stream on Netflix.

Bendigo researchers believe caffeine and estrogen could help trigger weight loss – Bendigo Advertiser

Bendigo researchers have begun a search for new drugs to speed up your metabolism.

Bendigo-based researchers could one day help speed up peoples metabolisms using caffeine or estrogen.

La Trobe University PhD candidates Lachlan Van Schaik and Will Sievers began exploring whether caffeine or estrogen could be developed into a weight loss drug this year.

They shared their research during National Science Week.

Both researchers wanted to trigger neurological networks into burning fat, targeting parts of the brain regulating brown fat.

Unlike other forms of fat produced by the human body, brown fat could burn energy and produce heat, speeding up peoples metabolisms.

RELATED: Researchers mending broken hearts for the love of science

Caffeine and estrogen had already been shown to fire up brown fat stores.

Caffeine could get brown fat burning, but the doses needed to fire up the metabolism were far too high to safely consume, Mr Van Schaik said.

His research was focused on finding ways to trigger the brains caffeine receptors.

Both researchers said targeting neural pathways was important for minimising unwanted side-effects.

Mr Van Schaik said that historically weight loss treatments had come with nasty side-effects.

You can design drugs in such a way that they only act in the brain. Thats part of the challenge of the projects of finding a drug, or a way of administering a drug, that would act in the brain without us actually going in and (physically) changing it, Mr Sievers said.

Mr Sievers was hoping estrogen would hold the key to faster metabolisms.

Researchers had already observed women who had gone through menopause often put on 10 to 15 kilograms, he said.

Lachlan Van Schaik and Will Sievers

If theres an increase in estrogen signalling (to receptors in the brain), will we see an increase in metabolism? Thats what Id like to know, Mr Sievers said.

Neither researcher believed their work would lead to a wonder drug that people could take without also leading a healthy lifestyle.

People would still need to diet and exercise even as they used drugs designed to speed up their metabolisms.

Diet Doc Explains Why Customized Dieting is More Effective than the Popular Keto Diet – GlobeNewswire (press release)

Oklahoma City, OK, Aug. 16, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- When people want to lose weight quickly, keto diets are a very common choice and for good reason. Low-carb dieting has been successfully used for years to drop pounds due to ketosis. Ketosis is what occurs when the body begins to burn fat for fuel, rather than carbohydrates; thus resulting in accelerated fat loss. In spite of the fact that it produces quick results, Diet Doc cautions that there are some additional characteristics of the diet that may not be as welcomed.

A diet low in carbs and high in protein cannot be sustained long-term given the effects of added protein can have on the kidneys, along with its negative effects on muscle and liver glycogen stores. Ketogenic diets often lack essential nutrients. If not balanced, a keto diet can lead to nutrient deficiencies such as b-vitamins and fiber. Healthy carbs are important for maintaining energy and fiber is critical for gastrointestinal health and weight reduction.

Customized diet planning on the other hand, can offer personalized guidance that takes all health issues into consideration to ensure that nutritional needs are being met and that weight loss is happening quickly. Body & Mind Medical Weight Loss Center’s Jump Start to Health Program Delivers Visible Results With 10-Day … – PR Newswire (press release)

ONTARIO, Calif., Aug. 8, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- For those looking to quickly, safely lose weight and improve their health markets, Body & Mind Medical Weight Loss Center (http://www.bodyandmindontario.com/) offers the KE Diet as part of its innovative Jump Start to Health program. This medically supervised intervention has already helped patients achieve tremendous results; more information about the program is available by calling 844-695-4331.

"Burning fat is key to losing weight and reversing lifestyle diseases like hypertension and type 2 diabetes," says Dr. Tanya Scurry, founder and medical director of Body & Mind Medical Weight Loss Center, "and the KE Diet has proven to be the best and safest way to turbocharge the fat-burning process. That's why it's an important element of our Jump Start to Health program. At Body & Mind Medical Weight Loss Center, we're helping people embrace a better way of life."

The KE Diet is administered during the first 10 days of the Jump Start to Health program. Patients receive a complete education on the diet during their intake and throughout the program. Under local anesthesia, a small naso-gastric tube is inserted to continuously deliver a specially formulated feeding solution rich in protein and fat. An obesity medicine physician closely monitors the patient throughout the diet, with no less than three follow-up appointments. Lab tests before and during the KE Diet ensure patient safety by checking electrolyte levels, ketones and other important markers.

Originally developed in Italy, the KE Diet has helped hundreds of thousands of people lose significant amounts of weight in a short time. At Body & Mind Medical Weight Loss Center, a 56-year-old male with hypertension, high cholesterol and an increased amount of abdominal fat shed 22 pounds in only ten days.

The KE Diet works by forcing the body to burn fat rather than carbohydrates for energy. The feeding solution has zero carbs, which acts as a "hard reset" for the body. While carbs are an important part of a balanced diet, the standard American diet of today suffers from an excess of this macronutrient. Simple, highly palatable carbs are especially a problem. Many preventable health issues are a direct result of excess fat and obesity caused by carb-rich diets. The 12-week Jump Start to Health program offers the tools and resources to learn healthier food choices and eating habits.

To qualify for the KE Diet, patients must have a body mass index (BMI) over 30, or over 27 with a medical condition related to obesity sleep apnea, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc. Patients of normal weight but high body fat percentages (over 25 percent for men, 32 percent for women) may also participate.

Once the KE Diet portion of the Jump Start to Health program concludes, patients work with a registered dietitian to develop a personalized meal plan to sustain their progress and set them on a path for a lifetime of better health. Patients also receive a personal fitness assessment by a personal trainer. The goal, according to Dr. Scurry, is to be successful in fat loss, not just weight loss.

The Keto dietis eating more fat the key to weight loss? – Medical Xpress

Credit: Arizona State University

Models, athletes and celebrities swear by the ketogenic "keto" diet to help shed those unwanted pounds. The keto diet encourages eating more cheese, butter and bacon; it's a low-carb, high-fat diet akin to the Atkins Diet created in 1972 by cardiologist Robert C. Atkins. The latest fad diet has amassed a following of devoted supporters, including Tim Tebow, LeBron James and Kim Kardashian, but does it really work?

Carol Johnston, professor and associate director of the nutrition program in the School of Nutrition and Health Promotion at Arizona State University, explains why the low-carb, high-fat diet is so popular, how it works, and what dieters should be eating to lose weight.

Question: Does the science behind the keto diet make sense? Would nearly eliminating carbs while increasing fat consumption help a person to lose weight?

Answer: The short answer is yes. There is mounting evidence that suggests calorie restricted, low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets are effective for weight loss, and the keto diet is an extreme version of this. Low-carb diets can be more satiating, allowing dieters to feel full longer, eat less, and thus experience greater weight loss success. However, calorie restricted, high-carb diets are also effective for weight loss.

Overwhelmingly, the most important factor in weight loss success is diet adherence. In research trials, most individuals who lose weight regain most of it within a year, regardless of which diet they were on. The downside of many of the fad diets you see today is the lack of emphasis on long-term lifestyle changes, which is necessary for long-term weight loss success.

Q: In your opinion, why is this diet so popular?

A: The keto diet is popular because it is easy to follow and on the surface seems effective. In the first few days after starting the keto diet, a person can experience a significant loss of water weight. When carb intake is restricted for a few days, glycogen stores in the muscle are reduced. Glycogen is responsible for water retention, so when its levels fall, so do our water levels. To the average person, the diet appears to be working. The number on the scale is going down. But, since most of this weight lost is water weight, it will return when the person consumes carbs again. While most people rely on scales to monitor weight loss and think any weight loss is good, the goal is actually to lose fat, which isn't always reflected on the scale. Additionally, the elevated levels of satietyfeeling fullmay help people stick to the diet longer and experience greater weight loss success.

Q: Is the keto diet healthy?

A: Keto diets have safely been used as an effective therapy for epilepsy for years. There are some risks associated with an extremely low-carb, high-fat diet, including elevated blood triglycerides (linked to elevated cardiovascular risk), increased urinary uric acid (which may lead to the formation of kidney stones), and lethargy. Adults on a low-carb diet are also at risk for adverse impacts to their bone health.

Q: We're always hearing about the evils of carbohydrates when it comes to losing weight. How important are carbs to our health and what role do they play in weight loss?

A: Carbs play a critical role in our health. We get energy either by burning glucose from carbs, or by burning fat. The keto diet focuses on the latter. Though carb-restricting diets are popular, carbs are actually less likely to convert into body fat than dietary fat.

Carbs are important for our brain and muscle health. Our brains rely entirely on glucose for energy productionthey can't get it from fatmaking the consumption of some carbs necessary. Our muscles can use either glucose or fat for energy, but during high-intensity exercise, they prefer glucose.

When we eat more carbs than we need, they convert to body fat, which contributes to obesity. In general, average Americansthose with a relatively sedentary lifestyleconsume more carbs and calories than they actually need. Athletes, on the other hand, need to keep their carb intake elevated to support their energy output. Balance between energy intake and output is key to maintaining a healthy weight.

Q: For people who are trying to lose weightwhat foods should they avoid? What foods should they include in their diet?

A: Energy-dense foods should be avoided (gravies, dressings, sauces, sweets, pastries, cakes, cookies, sugary drinks, etc.) and low-energy, nutrient-rich foods should be prominent in the diet (unprocessed plant foods, low fat dairy and lean, unprocessed meats).

Q: What should people know about the effectiveness or safety of fad diets like Atkins, keto, liquid diets, paleo, calorie restriction, etc.?

A: Any diet that restricts calories will typically result in weight loss if a person sticks with it. What is important when following a calorie-restricted diet (about 500 less calories per day) is that it has healthful attributesa diet composed of plant-based, unprocessed foods with low fat contentsuch as the Mediterranean diet. (Note, 500 calories equates to two 12-ounce sodas and a large chocolate chip cookie!)
