Weighted Vest | Running With a Weighted Vest – Runner’s World
Earlier this year, the coronavirus outbreak forced gyms and fitness studios to close, which forced us all to get creative with our running and training routines. One popular running add on: a weighted vest.
Its hard to pinpoint exactly where the idea of working out or running with a weighted vest originated. The military and firefighters have long used weight vests in training to mimic the load of equipment they carry during duty. But the trend became more mainstream when CrossFit incorporated weighted vests into certain memorial Workout Of the Days (WODs) to make them more challenging.
But can adding heft actually improve your running performance? We asked running and fitness experts to break down the benefits, risks, and everything in-between.
Wearing a weighted vest while walking or running essentially increases the load on both your muscles and connective tissues. That weight increase brings a challenge and a new stressor on the body, and change only occurs when the body is stressed, says Mat Forzaglia, certified personal trainer and founder of Forzag Fitness in New York City. By adding stress, you can improve your overall fitness.
Sure, you can add stress by doing speed intervals or lifting weights, but the idea is that by increasing weight while walking or running, the athlete is making weighted training as specific to their sport as possible, explains Jason Fitzgerald, USATF certified coach and creator of Strength Running in Denver, CO.
When it comes to boosting endurance and increasing speed, its possible to move the needle when done safely and progressively. Running with a weight vest has the potential to make you faster by reducing your injury risk so you can train long-term, and by increasing your aerobic fitness, explains Fitzgerald.
Even if youre not initially running at the same speed or intensity that you usually can (and you probably wont be able to!), you can still reap the benefits. Weighted walks or low-intensity running are more challenging than the same activity without a vest, so respiration will be higher at lower intensities, and that can help boost endurance while reducing an athletes risk of injury, says Fitzgerald. Plus, added strength gains will help mitigate injury riskand staying healthy is one of the best performance enhancers possible.
Join Runner's World+ for the latest training advice and tips!
While running with more weight on your body will help you build some muscle, it will be marginal compared to other forms of resistance training. It wont be like if you were to squat or deadlift, says Forzaglia. It can help you learn to endure heavier weight for longer periods of time.
Just like with all other forms of exercise such as walking, running, cycling, and weight lifting, running with a vest is one method that burns calories. But your diet and lifestyle play important factors as long-term weight loss is more complicated than simply: Calories in need to be less than calories out.
Adding weight and stress to your runs will help burn more calories, but how quickly you lose weight will vary depending on your body composition, nutrition, and other factors, says Kenny Santucci, NASM, personal trainer and creator of STRONG New York in New York, NY.
The extremes of exercise will always be more productive, such as high-intensity, long-duration, and very frequent exercise, adds Fitzgerald. Follow these science-backed tips if youre interested in running for weight loss.
If youre going to try it, its important that youre ready and capable to do so in order to prevent injury. One of the most important things to consider when it comes to training is being prepared to train, explains Santucci. If youve never run before, or you dont typically use weights to train, Santucci doesnt recommend running with a weight vest as the joints wont be prepared to handle the load.
Running with extra weight does increase the stress of running, so it can be an injury risk, explains Fitzgerald. Id advise that you begin by hiking [or walking] with a weighted vest, and once that feels good, reserve only very slow running for the vest. In other words, strap on a weight vest for your shorter, easier running days, or try hiking or walking with a vest on cross-training days. You dont want to slot this in on recovery days as the extra load will not allow your body to fully recover.
Fitzgerald also points out that its not smart to wear a weighted vest during any kind of speed workout. The goal is speed, and a vest will slow you down, he says.
Forzaglia suggests using a weight vest during the off-season. Its a tool you can utilize in the strength training block, early in the off-season, he says. Its not something to try as youre leading up to a race.
Training with a weight vest adds a whole new load onto the body. In order to not end up too soreor worse, injuredyou should start light, with a weight possibly even less than you think you can handle so your body can get used to this new load. Err on the conservative side and wear enough weight that you just notice it at first, says Fitzgerald. You can always add more later.
Santucci recommends starting with 10-pounds and then gradually increasing from there. Youll work up to the standard weight vest amount for women, which is 14 pounds, or men, which is 20 pounds, he says. Your goals will determine how much weight you add.
Forzaglia recommends vests that have individual single pound or two-pound weights that you can progressively add in or on to the vest as you get stronger and feel more comfortable with the vest.
CAP Adjustable Weighted Vest, 20 lbs.
Aduro Sport Weighted Vest 4 to 30 lbs.
$120.00
JBM Weighted Vest 12 or 20 lbs.
$40.00
RUNFast RM_40 Pro Weighted Vest 12 to 60 lbs.
This really depends on your goals. In the beginning, all experts agree to start slow as your body gets used to the additional weight. Doing too much too often may end up sidelining you. Once youre comfortable with it, you can work it into your routine.
The frequency with which you wear a weight vest does depend on the race youre training for but in general, a few times per week will work well for most runners, says Fitzgerald.

Competitive Eater from New York Faces Food Challenges Throughout the Mitten – 9&10 News
A competitive eater hailing from New York just wrapped up his Michigan food tour after going up against several eating challenges.
Photo: Mark Gdd
Mark Gdd has been making his way across the nation with a goal to do at least four challenges in each state. During his visit to the Mitten, he took on the Bagger Daves Burger Taverns Freight Train Challenge, City Limits Triple Bypass Burger Challenge, Trini & Joes Taco Wall of Fame Challenge, and Old Iron Bar & Grills Hoginator Sandwich Challenge.
I went to Trini & Joes and did their taco challenge, not expecting to set a record, said Mark. The record was 40, and I got 41. So, the guy who had the previous record will probably going back to reclaim his title.
Mark originally began his competitive eating as a way to lose weight. In January 2018, I was having a little bit of a problem with my weight, and I couldnt really get it down. I got into doing food challenges, and the only way to be good at it is to have an empty stomach. So, I tailored my diet around everything I needed to do in food challenges. Despite eating foods like the Triple Bypass Burger, Mark also consumes a wide variety of healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables. I lost weight, and now its something that I just enjoy doing.
As of now, Mark is not quite sure which food challenge is next on his list. COVID-19 is really taking its toll on a lot of these businesses that do these challenges, and so Im not 100% sure where Ill end up next.
In the meantime, you can keep track of the locations he has already visited on his YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram pages.
His Michigan food tour videos will be released on his YouTube page started with Bagger Daves Burger Taverns Freight Train Challenge on November 7.

The #1 Way to Lose Weight You Haven’t Tried Yet, Say Doctors – Yahoo Canada Shine On
More Americans are trying to lose weight today than ever before. According to a massive 18-year study of nearly 50,000 people published last year in the journal JAMA: Diabetes and Endocrinology, the number of adults over the age of 20 who have embarked on weight-loss plans jumped to 42.2 percent in 2016 compared to just 34.3 percent in 1999. The sobering news, however, was that the study also notes that a startling number of those efforts simply didn't work at allregardless of the fact that the weight-loss strategies evolved over time to factor in the latest science and research.
If you're among the countless Americans who have adopted a dedicated weight loss plan and haven't seen the results you wantedwhether it's via a fad diet or cutting calories or trying to go full ketodoctors say there's still hope for you yet. In fact, there's at least one targeted weight-loss method you should definitely try before you consider giving up on losing that extra weight for good: Fine-tuning your diet to get your gut health in order.
For perspective, know that your body is actually home to roughly ten times as many bacteria cells as it is to human cells. They accumulate on your skin, in your mucus membranes, in your mouth, and all throughout your digestive system. (Be thankful your cells are much bigger than bacteria cells, or else you'd look a lot different.) "All of this bacteria perform vital protective, structural, and metabolic functions," says Anthony S. Padula, MD, a rheumatologist and Gut Council Member for Jetson Probiotics. "Perhaps the most important bacteria are present in your gut as they produce hormones that can affect your metabolism, immunity, and behavior. There are trillions of bacteria living in your gut. Together with other microscopic organisms like viruses and fungi, they form your microbiome, which is unique to every individual."
The bacteria in your gut have long been thought to serve one primary purpose: to aid in the digestion of food, helping you absorb the maximum amount of nutrients and ridding your body of any excess. What's actually going on is a more delicate dance than most of us recognize, with the specific balance in bacteria in our digestive tract working as the deciding factor in who gets to enjoy an effortlessly fit body and who's stuck trying to shave off the same stubborn weight year after year.
"In most folks, the microbiome is not a healthy place anymore," says Florence Comite, MD, a clinician-scientist and founder of the Comite Center for Precision Medicine&Health in New York City. "It's not healthy because our environment has changed and our gut is the largest organ in our body to interact openly with the foods we eat, the air we breathe, and the fact that we take antibiotics and our whole structure has changed."
Making matters worse, when harmful bacteria take hold in your gut, your weight isn't the only thing to suffer. Harmful gut bacteria are linked to the development of leaky gut syndrome, a condition in which toxins borne from your gut bacteria inflame your digestive tract. Once your digestive tract is sufficiently angry, microperforations can develop, allowing those toxic substances to escape their confines and leak out into the bloodstream. This can lead to the development of chronic inflammation throughout your body, and that inflammation, in turn, can throw a wrench in your metabolism. The worst foods to avoid for your gut health will be foods that further inflame it.
"Processed foods, with their high sugar levels, omega-6 fatty acids, excess sodium, and junky additives, on the other hand, can stoke the fire of inflammation," Sydney Greene, MS, RD, told us recently. "When inflammation is high, it taxes the immune system leaving us more susceptible to disease and illness." (See here for the full list of The Worst Foods for Gut Health.)
So how can you restore balance to your gut? For starters, you need to exercise more. "Studies have shown that athletes, especially marathon runners, had higher levels of bacteria called Veillonella in their guts, especially after completing a race compared to inactive people," says Padula. "While you may not be a professional athlete, a good workout may boost different bacterial strains that will enhance your endurance and help you lose weight."
Story continues
You should also take steps to relax. "Stress can affect your gut health as it directly alters the microbiome and increases intestinal inflammation," Padula continues. "Some 'bad' types of bacteria are increased in the presence of stress while other, 'protective' bacteria are decreased. Also, levels of short chain fatty acids produced by the bacteria can be decreased when exposed to stress."
However, the single best thing you can do restore balance to your gutand boost your chances of losing weightis to nourish your gut with the foods it craves. To know what those are, courtesy of Padula, read on, because we've listed them below.
"There are numerous prebiotic and probiotic foods that contain fat burning microbes and also boost your microbiome and weight loss efforts," he explains. "Probiotic foods contain live strains of bacteria that increase the population of good bacteria in your digestive system, while prebiotic foods contain types of fiber that act as food for good bacteria. Both sources are designed to increase the number of bacteria in your gut and improve your microbiome." And for foods you should definitely avoid, take note of these 50 Worst Foods for Weight Loss.
1
fermented foods in glass jars
"Fermentation is a process that uses yeast and bacteria to preserve foods," says Padula. "Fermented foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, pickles, sourdough, and some cheeses are great sources of probiotics and therefore boost the population of your microbiome's bacteria."
2
bananas with individually wrapped stems
"These are good sources of the prebiotic fiber called inulin, which helps good bacteria grow. Two bananas a day are enough to boost your bacteria and reduce bloating."
3
Woman picking out kale and leeks at a farmers market or grocery store
"Research shows that leafy green vegetables such as spinach and kale have a specific type of sugar that stimulates healthy bacteria's growth. They are perfect sources of fiber and nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin K, and vitamin A."
4
different types of grains
"For your colon to work optimally, it requires at least 25 grams of daily fiber. Unlike other refined carbohydrates such as white bread and pasta, whole grains provide a lot of fiber. The bacteria in your gut are the only ones that can break down fiber. When that happens, it creates acids that protect your gut from harmful bacteria."
5
bowl of chili peppers
"Polyphenols are powerful antioxidant chemicals found in plant-based foods. Some examples are teas, soybeans, chili peppers, sesame seeds, and many others. These prebiotic foods maintain your gut health by moderating the gut's microbial balance." You Got This: Mum shares 30-minute habit behind 32kg weight loss – NEWS.com.au
Welcome to You Got This, news.com.aus weekly slice of fitness inspiration featuring tips and advice from real women whove experienced it all.
Molly Sprocket reached breaking point two years after the death of her mother.
The 39-year-old retail manager from Sydney said watching her terminally ill mum pass away impacted her both emotionally and psychologically.
As a result, Ms Sprocket she stopped taking care of herself properly, developing a poor relationship with food.
She didnt realise how it was affecting her until she stepped on the scales and it reflected almost 100kg.
I thought to myself, that is not who I am. I know that life is so short and the only person I was hurting was myself, Ms Sprocket told news.com.au

Being overweight prevented me from living my best life, Ms Sprocket said.
I was not active and sat on the sideline rather than participating.
Generally I was always covered up and a bikini or bathers would not have been an option.
However, that all changed in 2019 after an emotional conversation with her doctor which resulted in her deciding to make changes.
The 39-year-old went on to lose 32kg after she was put on a low calorie diet which consisted of three main steps meal replacement shakes, plenty of water and a low-impact daily 30-minute walk.
Changing my lifestyle helped me process the emotional toll the death of my mother had on me, she said.
When I accepted that I needed to lose weight, I began to take control back.
I still miss my mother every day, but I feel far happier mentally and at peace with both myself and my mothers passing.
Today, Ms Sprockets diet consists of two Optislim shakes a day alongside a balanced meal made up of either beef, chicken or fish with salad or vegetables.
Ill usually have a snack throughout the day which is either an Optislim bar, some fruit, or some low fat yoghurt, she said.
When it comes to exercise, she tries to keep her step count to a minimum 10,000 a day.
Exercise is primarily walking 30 minutes a day. I do have a cardio HIIT (high-intensity interval) trainer that I use if I cant go on a walk due to the rain.
While her journey was never about appearance, Ms Sprocket said she certainly feels more confident and happier when looking in the mirror prior to her transformation.
My journey was more about taking control of my life and losing weight so that I can live a healthy and active life, which I find is incredibly helpful in maintaining mental health too, she explained.
Having achieved a total weight loss of 32kg, Ms Sprocket believes anything is possible so long as you are honest with yourself.
If you are overweight, you are most likely in denial and if youre in denial, you wont do anything about it, she said.
For me it was a willingness to accept the truth, and a willingness to do something about it that turned my life around.

Breakfast or lunch: Whats a better time to have a cheat meal? – Times of India
Your cheat meal is more likely to be loaded with carbs, fat or sugar. Having any of these things in breakfast can lead to digestive issues. Your breakfast should be in general healthy and balanced. That's because in the morning our metabolism is slow due to lack of energy and our stomach might have difficulty in digesting heavy meals. Having food loaded with carbs and fat can put extra pressure on your stomach which might cause gastric issues, ingestion and heartburn.
Secondly, in the morning we are famished due to overnight fasting. Imagine if at that time your favourite food is served in front of you. You will definitely overeat, which can easily sabotage your weight loss goal. Having a cheat meal is good, but overeating is not. Even when indulging in your favourite food, do not forget about the calories. The number is important to stay on track.

The smart golfers guide to eating on the course, according to a nutrition expert – Golf.com
By: Luke Kerr-Dineen October 30, 2020
Eating well on the golf course is one of the most underrated ways to improve your score.

Welcome to Play Smart, a new game-improvement column that drops every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from Director ofGame Improvement content Luke Kerr-Dineento help you play smarter, better golf.
It was about this time last year when I decided to lose some weight. There was no real reality check moment for me; rather, it was a slow burn. More and more people seemingly all at once started referring to me as big guy hey, big guy! which caught me off guard. And then there were the times when I felt generally uncomfortable in my own body, which were growing more and more frequent. It was most notable when I was swinging a golf club. It was like I wasnt or maybe couldnt move as nimbly as I needed to.
So I shook things up. On the left I clocked-in at just north of 211; in the picture of me from two weeks ago on the right, Im maintaining my goal weight of about 163.
The process of losing weight is actually very simple. You eat less of some things and more of others. You can read about all the stuff I learned right here, but ultimately its about the choices you make and your ability to stay disciplined. My favorite Bojack Horseman quote of all time pretty much sums it up:
Every day it gets a little easier, but you gotta do it every day, thats the hard part.
Something that was indispensably important to me throughout it all was WW, formerly Weight Watchers. I use the app to track my food and genuinely love it, because the system isnt about counting calories or telling you what you cant eat, but rather helping you manage what you do.
And so, to glean some advice along those lines for all us day-in, day-out golfers out there, I called up WWs Head of nutrition & wellness Jaclyn London, MS, RD, CDN, who shared a host of helpful tips for golfers about the kinds of foods they should eat on the course, whether they want to lose weight or not.
Ive often wondered whether drinking coffee is conducive to a sport like golf, where the rounds are long and the movements often require a calm, precise touch. But far from not being detrimental to your game, London says coffee can be a good for golfers, consumed at the right time and in the right dosage.
A pre-round cup of coffee is a great way to up your energy level. It can contribute to your hydration goals and help you stay alert during your round, London says, who points to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans of up to 400 mg of caffeine daily, and recommends finishing your coffee up to an hour before your round.
Changing your coffee order to a 16 ounce latte, with low fat and skim milk, can also provide up to 16 grams of protein which will help you sustain that energy.
You donthave to eat breakfast, London says, but she recommends it. Not just because its an easy way to up your energy levels, but because its a healthy habit: Skipping breakfast means your hunger will come back to haunt you later, and as the desperation to get something in your stomach mounts, youre more likely to gorge on anything you can find.
The key, London says, is to use food as fuel to maintain a nice, steady energy level throughout your entire round.
Establishing a pattern right off the bat of not skipping meals in the a.m. sets you up to make better choices all day even if youre not ravenous when you wake up, London says. Eating within 30 min. to one hour after waking up can help you get the day started and can provide you with some much-needed fuel in the tank.
Complex carbohydrates arent bad, despite what you may have heard, but its important to understand what they do best. In short: Carbs provide quick, intense jolts of energy. That can be extremely helpful for golfers, London says, as long as they stick to a 2-to-1 protein-to-carbs ratio.
The glucose from the carbs gets into your bloodstream really fast, London said. You need the combination of carbs and protein, making sure that you maintain energy and feel satisfied throughout your round.
Snacking throughout your round is another healthy habit recreational golfers should take on board. And when they do, its important they look for higher-protein snacks that will provide some sustenance and steady energy.
Dried cheese snacks like dried parmesan, a piece of fruit or a pack of dried unsweetened fruit; a pack of nuts or nut butters, are all great options, London says. Youre looking for mini-meals with protein, fiber, and healthy fats.
Drinking enough water on the golf course, especially during the hot days, is perhaps the single most important thing you can do. The benefits are almost innumerable: It improves your focus, maintains your energy levels, and aids in digestion, among many other things. And when youre playing golf, you tend to lose water more quickly, so you need to replenish consistently.
Hydration helps with just about everything, London says. It changes depending on your climate, but I use eight-to-10 glasses per day as a starting point for an active person.
Therell be days when you fall off the wagon. Youll stick around after your round, share a few beers and share a plate of something. Its inevitable, and when it does happen, its important to dwell on it. Move on and get back to your consistent routine, based around what London calls the three Ts
Thetype of food youre eating
Thetiming of when youre eating your food
Thetools youre using to manage it.
I often say progress is better than perfection, London says. Practice making good choices so the the next time youre coming into those type of situations, youre not ravenous, but coming in from a hydrated, satisfied place where you dont have as much desire to eat all the cheese fries.

90 Day Fiance Stars Darcey Silva And Stacey Silva Are Getting HCG Injections To Lose Weight – Reality Tea
The name Darcey Silva became synonymous with drunken sobbing, highly impractical outfits, and demands for a marriage proposal. It was outrageous to watch most of the time, but the persona kept Darcey on 90 Day Fiance: Before The 90 Days for three seasons. She even got a spinoff on TLC costarring her twin sister Stacey Silva.
It was during the season finale of Darcey and Stacey that Darcey finally got her proposal. After two failed relationships, a promise band, and an honorary house key, someone gave Darcey a proper ring. And that special someone was Bulgarian fiance Georgi Rusev, who surprised Darcey with a proposal in June.
During filming for the season, Georgi revealed his marital status. He had just begun divorce proceedings from his estranged wife at the time. The process is ongoing, so Darcey will have to wait to walk down the aisle. But that doesnt mean she cant start planning ahead.
Will the wedding be filmed for TLC? You bet it will. Will Darcey want to look her best for the cameras? You bet she will. Thats why Darcey is taking an extreme route to lose weight for her big day. Newlywed sister Stacey is joining her on the regime.
Soapdirt reported that Darcey and Stacey are currently on a low calorie diet. They are also on a HCG program for weight loss. HCG involves injections of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) for a 45 day period.
The unconventional method seems to be working for Darcey. She supposedly already lost five pounds.
Darcey estimates that Georgis divorce will take a few more months to settle, so the couple are planning to wed sometime next year. Darcey revealed that it will be a beach destination, though a definite location hasnt been chosen yet.
The wedding, whenever it happens, will be another marketing opportunity for the twins clothing line House of Eleven, should the bride decide to wear one of her designs for the event.
