What is liposuction? How the procedure works and how painful it is – Business Insider India
Liposuction is a surgical procedure to remove extra fat from your body. It started in the 1980s and has become one of the most popular plastic surgeries in the US. An estimated 258,000 Americans got it in 2018.
Today, you can expect to pay around $3,500 for liposuction and most health insurance plans won't cover the cost. But if you're willing to pay the price, liposuction is a relatively safe and quick procedure that can help you shed fat that diet and exercise can't.
Some of the most common places to have fat removed are the belly, thighs, buttocks, arms, back, the upper neck just under the chin, and jawline/jowls.

Then, surgeons will often inject into the area of operation a solution containing a mix of saline solution, a numbing medicine, and medicine the decreases bleeding. This is to help the skin and fat separate from important structures like muscles and blood vessels so they aren't damaged during the suctioning process.
After liposuction, your surgeon will likely recommend you wear a temporary band or brace over the area of operation to help the skin heal. The band or brace also helps prevent fluid from building up in the area of operation where the fat was removed, between the skin and deeper structures like muscles and blood vessels.
Whether you are awake or asleep during liposuction, you shouldn't feel any pain during the procedure, says Marco A. Pelosi II, MD, a cosmetic surgeon with experience performing liposuction procedures. The recovery, also, should be a relatively mild process.
Ongoing pain near the area where the cannula was inserted is a risk of liposuction, and if the pain grows or pain killers don't help, you should tell your surgeon.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, you should not use liposuction as a weight loss alternative. It recommends that if you want to lose weight, you should first try diet and exercise, then use liposuction to take care of more stubborn areas like the chin or belly fat.
There are some important safety tips to look for when choosing a liposuction provider.
Pelosi says that doctors should also do blood work testing and medical clearances before a liposuction procedure to ensure your safety. These tests are to make sure you can safely undergo general anesthesia without complication. If, for example, you have an infection or are pregnant, you may not qualify for the surgery.

Age: 52Occupation: MarketingHometown: Lincoln, CaliforniaStart Weight: 275 poundsEnd Weight: 195 poundsTime Cycling: 7 yearsReason for cycling: I started cycling to help me lose weight, and in the end discovered a new hobby that has helped me keep my sanity. I can get on a bike and get lost for hours at a time.
I am a 52- year-old United States Marine who got lazy about his weight while climbing up the corporate ladder, and in 2012 I topped out at 275 pounds. I went on vacation to Hawaii and took some pictures of myself at the beach with no shirt on, and oh my god, I was huge. When I reviewed the pictures at home, I was utterly disappointed in myself and depressed. I decided not to keep the picturesor the weight.
That same weekend, a friend called and invited me on a bike ride. I said No, I have to come up with a plan to lose weight. He just replied, Cycling is great exercise.
I wentand it was the worst experience of my life. It was 105 degrees, I didn't have enough water, and I had a crappy Wal-Mart mountain bike that barely worked. We biked a grand total of 20 miles in Sacramento, California, and when we were done was I exhausted. I remember collapsing in the grass next to my car.
But I was instantly hooked. That same night I went out and bought a $700 Fuji hybrid bike, and I started riding every night. First two miles, then four, then eight, then more. I started weighing myself, and the more I cycled the more the weight came off.
I work from home so I have a lot of flexibility with my ridingI can ride in the morning, afternoon, and nights during the week and whenever during the weekend. During the weekends as the weight came off, I rode long rides with my friend who originally introduced me to cycling, and we explored local paved trails in the Sacramento area.
After my Fuji bike I bought a Giant, then a Specialized. I saw an ad on Craigslist for a Cannondale I liked, did some research and the price was too good to be true. I honestly thought it was stolen, but it was a college kid at UC Davis that was on the cycling team and needed the money. I got involved in a Cannondale Facebook group, and Ive been a Cannondale fan ever since then.
Story continues
I currently have two bikes, a Cannondale Evo Super Six and a 2002 Cannondale CAAD 5 Stars & Stripes. The story goes that shortly after 9/11 a group of NYC fire fighters planned a charity bike ride from NYC to LA using the same route as one of the planes, and Cannondale made them some special bikes for the event. These became popular and public wanted them so Cannondale made some for the public.
I bought mine on eBay used and abused, fixed it up as best I could, and rode it as is. At one point I drove down to SoCal and rode this bike up to the Hollywood sign. Eventually, I went to my local bike shop and enlisted their help and we completely refurbished the entire bikethe only thing original is the frame, seat post, and handlebars.
Now, I ride every day, usually 20 miles in the morning before work, and then 30 to 50 miles a day on weekends. I work from home so my schedule is flexible and allows me to ride. Last year I discovered the gymwhich I had never done beforeand it helped me to accelerate my weight loss. And, last January we got a puppy, so I walk the dog two or three times a day.
Previously, my diet was horrible. I ate a lot of fast food, and I used to constantly drink Pepsi throughout the day. Now my diet is much better, and I tend to eat high-protein meals these days. Fast food is very rare for me, usually once a month. I love pizza to the point where I run a pizza Facebook group, but I limit myself to a slice or two a week.
Facebook has also helped me connect with other cyclists, and Ive even started a cycling group. I am an old-school kind of computer guy and love Facebook. During the recession I was unemployed and I took a lot of selfies and put them on Facebook. Because I wear prescription glasses, most of my selfies were of me in my prescription wayfarer sunglasses which gave me a small amount of notoriety locally. I started a local Facebook group for my town, which now has around 6,000 members (for a town of 50,000 people). I run a number of groups (including the pizza group), so and it was only a matter of time before I created the cycling group. Its quiet but growing.

The Carnivore Diet Can Lead to Weight Loss, But There’s a Catch – Fatherly
The carnivore diet is not for the weak of heart. Dubbed the no-carb diet, those who follow it eat only meat and occasionally eggs and dairy and, anecdotal evidence suggests lose weight. Where other diets have failed, could a meal plan that skips all fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, or grains really be the answer? If it seems too good to be true, it usually is. In this case, experts point to the risk of health issues such as heart disease and gastric cancer as reason enough to maybe just eat a bit healthier?
The carnivore diet was born of the controversial (read, overly simplistic and evolutionarily preposterous) idea that humans evolved to eat meat so thats what we should be eating now. Anecdotal reports say the diet reverses stubborn diseases and conditions that no treatment has. The two biggest benefits proponents claim are to autoimmune disorder management and weight loss. The evidence of these claims is thin as paper.
To date, no scientific research has analyzed the health effects of the carnivore diet, and the person who is arguably most famous for promoting it doesnt really bear the credentials to buck the lack of research. Former orthopedic surgeon Shawn Baker brought attention to carnivory with his 2019 book The Carnivore Diet. Bakers medical license was revoked in 2017 by the New Mexico Medical Board due to concerns about his competency.
In the short-term, a carnivore diet probably wont hurt anyone. But its a fad diet, Liz Weinandy, a dietician at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, told Everyday Health. Some critics are harsher. This diet is absolutely ridiculous, specialist dietitian Nichola Ludlam-Raine told Insider. Long term it could have some pretty serious health implications, not to mention a poorly functioning immune system leaving you more susceptible to catching coughs and colds.
Do you plan on taking your kids trick-or-treating this year?
Thanks for the feedback!
The carnivore diet is in some ways a more extreme version of the low-carb keto and paleo diets. People who attempt it have usually tried one of the other two in the past and didnt find the results they were looking for. Although there is no one way to follow the carnivore diet, some practitioners recommend eating fatty meats and other high-fat animal products. Eating high-fat foods, in contrast to protein-heavy foods, is more likely to lead to ketosis the process of burning fat for fuel instead of carbs, which can lead to rapid weight loss in the short term.
Eating foods high in fat can also make a person feel full. Feeling satiated from consuming these food items can help reduce your caloric intake, as you wont feel as hungry, likely leading to weight loss, Hollie Zammit, a clinical dietitian at Orlando Health, told U.S. News. It can also be harder to snack on an all-meat diet. Though youre used to popping chips in your mouth as you watch TV, youre probably unlikely to do the same with pieces of chicken breast.
One other explanation for carnivores weight loss has nothing to do with eating meat. Instead, it has to do what you dont eat: pastries and sodas and sugars. Cutting out these foods can help with weight management or weight loss. (But you can also cut them out of your life without eliminating foods that come from the ground.) Because there have been no studies on the carnivore diet, its impossible to say for sure why or even if it causes weight loss.
Besides lost pounds, other short-term effects are a lot less pretty. In the days or weeks after making the switch, some people report diarrhea. Comedian Joe Rogan tried the diet and although he lost 12 pounds, he had explosive diarrhea for weeks. And although weight loss is one of the biggest draws of the diet, some people who attempted it have reported rapid weight gain and bloatingamong other issues such as bad body odor, acne, and an upset stomach.
Following the carnivore diet for a prolonged long time could lead to a score of health issues. Its massively devoid in nutrients, carbs, and fiber which will most likely leave you feeling lacking in energy, Ludlam-Raine said. Fiber isnt found in animal products, and a lack of it could lead to constipation and upset in the gut microbiome. Avoiding fruits and vegetables can also mean missing out on key nutrients and vitamins, although supplements can help to make up for what carnivores lack in their diet. Plus, fruits and veggies are simply good for you. Eating plant-based foods is associated with a lower risk of heart disease, Alzheimers, type 2 diabetes, and other chronic health conditions, according to Healthline.
Although the carnivore diet doesnt provide enough of some nutrients, it provides far too many of others. Carnivores are at a high risk of overloading with saturated fats, which can raise LDL cholesterol levels and increase the risk of heart disease. Processed meats, such as bacon, salami, and ham, have high levels of sodium. Eating lots of salt raises the risk of health dangers such as kidney disease and high blood pressure. Eating processed meats is also associated with increased rates of some cancers.
Theres also the oft-overlooked fact that the carnivore diet is extremely boring. The idea of bacon and steak all day every day may be appealing at first, but it gets old and can also trigger unhealthy feelings towards food. Following any restrictive diet can often lead to loneliness and social isolation. It can build distrust with yourself, disconnecting the relationship you have with your body and food, Zammit said. All this can affect your quality of life in a negative way, especially if following long term.
Talk to a dietitian or other health professional if youre considering the carnivore diet or any extreme diet. Although one way of eating may be healthful for some people, it can be harmful to others. People with kidney disease and a history of disordered eating, for example, should not try the carnivore diet. And if youre in it for the weight loss, remember that not all forms of weight loss are healthy and being healthy is more important than being thin.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Taking Liver Supplements? – South Florida Reporter
Consumers must address liver health to avoid serious disease development. When it comes to the liver, the individual must consider what toxins they are exposed to each day. Pollution and contaminants in the air can cause liver damage. These increases in toxins increase the risk of diseases of the liver and make the individual experience a myriad of symptoms.Ingesting foods and beverages that arent safe for the liver increases the risk of developing liver disease. A common denominator when it comes to liver disease is alcoholism.
Starting supplements before showing signs of liver disease could help individuals decrease their risks.
Improving Liver Function
Liver function is vital to great health, as it is the natural filtration system for the body. If the liver isnt functioning, the body will have toxin buildup that creates unhealthy consequences. Taking supplements for the liver can improve its function and prevent negative health consequences. Individuals can learn more about liver support supplements by contacting a retailer right now.
Reducing Inflammation in the Liver
Inflammation in the liver is a symptom of many diseases. They include alcohol abuse, autoimmune diseases, viral infections, and obstructive jaundice. As doctors treat these conditions, they address inflammation by providing prescription medications that decrease inflammation and improve the function of the liver. Dietary supplements designed specifically for the liver can provide anti-inflammatory properties to prevent these conditions. While it isnt a cure for liver diseases, the supplements could ease the individuals pain by decreasing the frequency of liver inflammation.
Improving the Metabolism and Maximizing Weight Loss
Increasing the metabolic rate helps people lose weight and burn fat at an accelerated rate. When dieting and exercising, it is important to increase the metabolism to eliminate fat deposits. As individuals age, their metabolism slows and causes additional fat deposits to develop in problem areas such as the abdomen. This makes it more difficult to lose weight and arrive at an ideal weight. The individual needs help via dietary supplements to increase their metabolic rate for burning off fat when exercising. Keeping the metabolism at a higher level makes it possible to burn fat through digestion and prevent the person from gaining extra weight while dieting.
Detoxing the Body
Filtering out toxins from the body is the livers job, however, it could fail and cause serious health consequences. If the liver isnt performing properly, the individual experiences a buildup of toxins in the body. Taking liver supplements detoxes the body and forces these harmful substances out of the bloodstream through waste products.
The additional help prevents the individuals from becoming lethargic and bloated because of the toxins in their bodies. The liver supplements provide an effective filter and provide a faster detox to improve the individuals health and well-being.
Eliminating Waste Product Buildup
Evacuating waste product buildup helps the body become healthier. If the digestive system and kidneys arent performing properly, the body cannot remove the toxins filtered by the liver. The waste products linger in the body and could escape into the bloodstream. This could lead to a serious infection or sepsis. Understanding how the digestive system and liver work together helps individuals discover why both organ systems are vital to their health. Taking liver supplements can remove excessive waste products from the body and improve how the liver and digestive system operate. This could prevent serious health complications and prevent a life-threatening situation.
Enhancing the Immune System
The immune system reacts whenever bacteria, viruses, and funguses are found in the body. It delivers antibodies throughout the body to eliminate these harmful substances. If the immune system doesnt function properly, the individual could succumb to simple illnesses and take longer to recover. Immune systems must perform properly to keep the body healthy. If the immune system is compromised, the individual could face complications each time they become sick.
Taking liver supplements improves the immune system and improves the way the body manages toxins and harmful substances. Improving the immune system prevents individuals from facing serious illnesses because their liver isnt filtering out harmful bacteria and viruses.
Promoting the Regeneration of Liver Cells
The liver is the only organ that can regenerate itself and promoting regeneration of the liver cells helps the organ stay healthy. Liver supplements enhance the liver on a cellular level and improve its ability to regenerate. The supplements include enzymes that can repair damage and enhance the way the liver works. It is vital to improving liver function and its ability to regenerate as the individual ages.
Several activities could lead to liver damage, including excessive consumption of alcohol and a high-fat diet. The supplements could promote regeneration after liver injuries or serious diseases such as cancer or cirrhosis of the liver.
Remove Toxins That Affect the Mood
The buildup of toxins can affect the individuals mood and increase irritability. This general feeling of malaise is caused by an imbalance in the body, and it could increase depression, mood swings, and aggression. Taking the liver supplements forces out the toxins and improves the mood. They can revitalize the body and increase serotonin and dopamine in the body. These natural feel-good hormones uplift the mood and manage discomfort and pain effectively. As the supplements help the liver detox the body, the individual experience fewer mood swings and exhibits a balanced mood. Taking the supplements every day controls the toxins in the body and achieves greater health.
Consumers take a variety of dietary supplements to address common health concerns, and they determine what supplements address specific organ systems. The liver is the bodys natural filter, and if it doesnt perform properly, the individual could experience a buildup of toxins and waste products in the body.

Weight loss: can your ‘settling point’ prevent you from losing weight in the long term? – T3 (Australia)
Each day, we learn more about how to lose belly fat efficiently through research and while many people believe in the positive effects of diets such as the keto diet and intermittent fasting, evidence suggest that in the long run, people will put the weight back on that they lost initially.
When we try to lose weight, we work against our bodies, which likes to hang on to fat reserves as it expects bad times to come. "Human preferences for energy-dense sweet and high-fat foods may have evolved for reasons of survival", as this 2010 paper on Human Perceptions and Preferences for Fat-Rich Foods suggest. Our bodies are happy to reserve some fat because it knows that at some point, it will have to use it to keep us alive. So in theory, more fat reserves equals to an increased chance of survival.
One of the issues is that we live in a world where energy-dense food is abundant so there is no need for us to store fat. We can buy avocados and watermelons all year around and we also have access to a variety of supplements. As well as that, we also created an environment around us that preserves energy: we live in warm houses, move less and so on.
The Health Survey for England 2017estimates that "28.7% of adults in England are obese and a further 35.6% are overweight but not obese".Despite all this, a good chunk of the population is still not obese. If we would crave all the food in the world all the time, surely everyone would become fat in no time? There must be other forces at play than just sheer will that regulates how much we weight.
One theory is that your body has a 'set point' or 'settling point': a bodyweight it likes to keep and return to most of the time. According to a research paper titled Set points, settling points and some alternative models: theoretical options to understand how genes and environments combine to regulate body adiposity, published in 2011, "the set point model...suggests that there is an active feedback mechanism linking adipose tissue (stored energy) to intake and expenditure via a set point, presumably encoded in the brain" while "the settling point model is based on the idea that there is passive feedback between the size of the body stores and aspects of expenditure."

Both theories suggests that our bodies have a preferred weight it likes to keep whether we like it or not. This would explain why we pile the weight back on once we are finished with the latest 4-week diet-fad. The theory also implies that once we stopped forcing our bodies to do something it really doesn't like doing (i.e. getting rid of fat storages), it will return to point it thinks will serve your survival the best.
Bad news is, this system can not only be flawed but also abused by people. For example, our bodies can suffer from leptin-resistance, leptin being a hormone often referred to as the 'starvation hormone'. A study called Leptin resistance: underlying mechanisms and diagnosis suggests that "a decrease in tissue sensitivity to leptin leads to the development of obesity and metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance and dyslipidemia".
Bad diet can also influence these theoretical set points, especially strict calorie restrictive diets. When we force our bodies to lose weight through starvation, it tends to reduce our energy expenditures as a response. After we return to our usual diet, the body will happily restock the fat it lost and does it even quicker since it already reduced its energy expenditure by lowering resting basal metabolic (BMR) rate, as explained in this research paper titled Reduced Metabolic Rate after Caloric RestrictionCan We Agree on How to Normalize the Data?
This could also explain why people put on more weight when they return to the normal food intake levels after low calorie diets. Since the body lowers its BMR, eating the same amount of food you used to eat will result in an even greater calorie surplus and therefore quicker fat reserve replenishment.
An article called Does Metabolism Matter in Weight Loss? and published by the Harvard Medical School mentions that "our bodies are also programmed to sense a lack of food as starvation. In response, our BMR slows down, which means fewer calories burned over time. That's one reason why losing weight is often difficult."
The more often and longer you go on extreme calorie restricted diets, the more likely you will damage your metabolic-system and sustain the 'losing weight-putting more back on cycle'.
Is it pointless to diet? Of course not. Normal BMI is associated with better health prospects in general, so it is worth losing some weight if at all possible. But how?
One solution might be to keep a somewhat calorie restricted diet all the while boosting metabolic rates. Metabolism can be boosted just by walking a bit more and including certain food items in your diet.
This might be more challenging to some than others leptin-resistance can be at play in some cases but in non-extreme cases, it is more than achievable to drop some weight through the combination of moderate exercising and a balanced diet. Resistance training is also said to help keeping the weight off, as noted in a paper aptly titled Resistance Training Conserves Fatfree Mass and Resting Energy Expenditure Following Weight Loss.
An important thing to keep in mind is time, as in letting your body adjust to changes. Your body is extremely adaptable but also slightly pessimistic, so it can change quickly in response to negative stimuli such as a lack of food, but reacts slower to positive ones as it expects that lack of food to happen again in future...
A gentle decrease in calorie intake and moderate increase in exercise levels can help put the body on a more sustainable and healthy bodyweight trajectory in the long run.

There’s a New Reason You Can’t Lose Weight, According to Science – Yahoo Lifestyle
If you're looking to keep your weight under control, common knowledge would have you believing it boils down primarily to two things: the number of calories you consume, and the number of calories you burn off. While these factors certainly play a prominent role, you may have found that no matter how many salads you eat and how many workouts you do, you still can't shed those pounds. Why? Well, new research is shedding light on the fact that thinking of weight loss purely in terms of the physical acts of eating and exercising is a mistake. In reality, the reason you can't lose weight may be because of the way your brain is seeing and smelling food. Read on to learn more, and if you want more tips on why the number on the scale is stuck, here's How to Overcome a Dreaded Weight Loss Plateau.
Researchers at the Zlotowski Center for Neuroscience at the Ben-Gurion University (BGU) in Israel recently discovered what they describe as "a neural subnetwork of connected regions between the brain and gastric basal electric frequency that correlates with future weight loss based on connectivity patterns." In lay terms, this means that people who see and smell food in a way that triggers their brain more enthusiastically are the same people who consistently overeat and gain weight.
The study looked at 92 people during an 18-month lifestyle weight loss intervention, led by Prof. Iris Shai of BGU's Department of Epidemiology. All had a large waist circumference and abnormal level of blood lipids (the fatty substances found in the blood, including cholesterol and triglycerides). "It appears that visual information may be an important factor triggering eating," principal investigator Prof. Galia Avidan, from the BGU Departments of Brain and Cognitive Sciences and Psychology, said in a statement. "This is reasonable, given that vision is the primary sense in humans."
The findings, which were published the journal Neuroimage, led the researchers to conclude that "weight loss is not merely a matter of willpower, but is actually connected to much more basic visual and olfactory cues."

Of course, weight management is a huge concern for many Americans. According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 36.5 percent of American adults are obese, and another 32.5 percent are overweight. Additionally, 49 percent of U.S. adults surveyed between 2013 and 2016 reported trying to lose weight at some point during the prior 12 months, according to the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). Women were more likely to be making an effort to slim down (56.4 percent of women versus 41.7 percent of men).
Further research is needed on the link between your eyes and your weight, but this latest study suggests we need to think of weight loss as being as much to do with neurology as it is biology.

However, it is not just about the quantity of what we eat, but also about the quality. If we binge on processed, unhealthy foods, it is inevitable to gain weight, even when you practice portion control. At the same time, a diet on its own can do little for the body if you do not provide the process with regular and consistent physical activity in the form of some or the other exercise.
Since exercise and diet both play such a vital role in weight loss, it is important to know the right amount of exercise, and the right nutrients you must consume to achieve your goal weight.Greata Sherene Robinson, nutritionist, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Chennai, shares with us the importance of diet and exercise for a healthy body, how much of each you need, and a healthy recipe to help you in the practicality of the weight loss idea.
The most effective way to achieve a complete fitness goal is to knowthe calculation of what we eat. It is important to know the components of your food, such as how manycarbohydrates, how much protein, fat, calories, etc are you consuming. Excuses burn zero calories is a common statement we come across which can be altered by saying that exercise burns a ton. When your heart says yes toa yummy cheesecake, the mind keeps warning us about the waistline. So, fitness and food gohand in hand. If your left-hand lifts a dumbbell, make sure your right-hand gets a bowl of protein snack.
Food fuels our body. Whether you walk, jump or swim around, you need to eat a nutritious balanced diet to fuel your body. The macros play a major role in this balance.Coming to the carbs, it forms the base of any diet. The body utilizes them as glucose which is used by the muscles for energy. Choose carbs wisely by sticking to more of complex carbohydrates. All your ripped muscles need to undergo repair for which protein is a must.To help access all the stored carbohydrates, healthy fats come in place. Carbs and fats are the main sources of energy during any fitness regimen. Microminerals and vitamins like vitamin C, E, carotenoids and flavonoids helpin healing muscle injury.Water keeps the muscle activated and prevents dehydration.
One calorie is basically the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water through 1 C.
To understand it the simple way, (1 g =? kcal)Carbohydrates - 4 KcalProtein - 4 kcalFat - 9 kcal
For example, suppose you buy a chocolate bar on which the label reads as:Carbohydrates 58.5 g x 4 kcal = 234 kcalProtein 7.8 g x 4 kcal = 31 kcalFat 31.1 g x 9 kcal = 280 kcal
Makes a total of 545 kcal/100 g.
This is the way we calculate calories. But remember that calorie intake differs from individual to individual based on factors like age, height, sex and lifestyle. Lets look at how to get the right food in appropriate quantity to keep our fitness goals on track.
