Where You Carry Body Fat May Affect How Long You Live – The New York Times

Being overweight is linked to an increased risk for premature death, but which part of the body carries the added fat could make a big difference. Extra weight in some places may actually lower the risk.

Researchers, writing in BMJ, reviewed 72 prospective studies that included more than two and a half million participants with data on body fat and mortality. They found that central adiposity a large waist was consistently associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality. In pooled data from 50 studies, each four-inch increase in waist size was associated with an 11 percent increased relative risk for premature death. The association was significant after adjusting for smoking, physical activity and alcohol consumption.

Waist size is an indicator of the amount of visceral fat, or fat stored in the abdomen around the internal organs. This kind of fat is associated with an increased risk for heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, cancer and Alzheimers disease.

But increased fat in two places appears to be associated with a lower risk of death. Three studies showed that each two-inch increase in thigh circumference was associated with an 18 percent lower risk of all-cause mortality. In nine studies involving almost 300,000 participants, a four-inch increase in a womans hip circumference was associated with a 10 percent lower risk of death.

Thigh size is an indicator of the amount of muscle, which is protective, said a co-author of the review, Tauseef Ahmad Khan, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto. And hip fat is not visceral fat, but subcutaneous fat, which is considered beneficial.

Comparing waist size with other bodily measurements reveals still more information about the risk for premature death. Given two people with the same hip size, the person with the larger waist is at higher risk for premature mortality.

For example, consider one man with a 34-inch waist and 37-inch hips, and another with the same hip size but a 41-inch waist. The latters relative risk of death, the researchers found, was almost 50 percent higher. Small changes in this waist-to-hip ratio make a big difference: In 31 studies that reported the ratio, each 0.1 unit increase in waist-to-hip ratio was associated with a 20 percent higher relative risk of death, with a stronger association in women than in men.

It is unclear if there is a risk in having too small a waist. There is a range in these measures, Dr. Khan said, a range in which these numbers are beneficial. Above that range, there is higher risk, but more research has to be done about lower ranges.

Losing excess weight is of course desirable, but there is probably no way to redistribute weight, or lose weight in the waist alone. It doesnt work that way, said Dr. Khan. You have to reduce overall weight, and that also reduces central fatness.

There is a way to put many of these various factors together in a single measurement, using a formula called A.B.S.I., or a body shape index. This calculation includes not only weight and height, like B.M.I., or body mass index, but also age, sex and waist circumference. It may produce a more accurate estimate of risk, the authors say.

A.B.S.I. is used mostly as a research tool, but anyone can calculate it here: https://www.fatcalc.com/absi. Each 0.005 unit increase in A.B.S.I. was associated with a 15 percent higher risk of all-cause mortality.

The takeaway message is watch your waist size, Dr. Khan said. Its more important than a simple measure of weight. You can have a normal weight and B.M.I., but if your waist is large, that puts you at high risk.

Julie celebrates 25 years of helping others lose weight – Malvern Gazette

A WEIGHT Watchers leader from Malvern is celebrating clocking up 25 years of helping people across Worcestershire lose weight.

Julie Baker, who first moved to Malvern 29 years ago, originally joined to lose four stone.

Since then, however, she has become a group leader and helped thousands of people in Worcester, Pershore, Churchdown and Malvern lose weight.

She said: As you can imagine I have seen many changes and innovations over the years with WW, all of them aimed at helping members become a much better version of themselves.

To this day I still get so much pride and satisfaction from helping and watching members achieve their own personal wellness journeys.

Two people who have been helped recently by Mrs Baker are Alison Palmer and Sami Heath, who have lost 175lbs (12.5 stones) between them.

Mrs Palmer went to Mrs Baker for help in June last year as she suffers from an auto-neurone condition and osteoarthritis.

Her medical team suggested steroids, painkillers, hydrotherapy and crutches, but 47 year-old Mrs Palmer instead joined Mrs Bakers Worcester workshop.

Since joining the group, Mrs Palmer has lost seven stones in 14 months, dropping from 18.2 stones to 10 stones 12 lbs.

She said: I am incredibly grateful to Julie for helping me turn my life around.

Amazingly, I can now do a little exercise within my limitations and I enjoy walking.

I also enjoy cooking and all the family partakes in healthy meals, the recipes to which I source through the WW app.

Mrs Heath, 53, has dropped from 15 stone 10lbs to 10 stones 5lbs.

She said: Julie is an amazing coach.

She has the knack of saying all the right things to motivate you and keep you going on your journey.

I joined just over a year ago having walked past a shop window and shuddering at what I saw staring back at me.

"Julie guided me from my eating habits of takeaways, no breakfasts and massive portions to a healthy, more satisfying way of eating.

My terrier is also grateful to Julie as he now has lots more walks as I go for my daily exercise with him."

Mrs Baker added: Overall it has been an amazing journey.

For me, WW has always been about family and community.

Ive been lucky enough to see my members have their own families and even watched their children join as well.

All in all it has been a privilege to support the people of this local community to lose weight and I am looking forward to the next 25 years.

1

Rice cakes are an old-school diet staple. But the simple carbohydrates rank notoriously high on the glycemic index (GI) a measure of how quickly blood rises in response to food on a scale of one to 100 (rice cakes come in at 82). High GI foods provide a rush of energy but can leave you hungry within a few hours. Researchers at the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center found high-GI snacks caused excessive hunger and increased activity in craving and reward area of the brain the perfect storm for overeating and weight gain.

2

"I try to avoid excessive caffeine," says Dr. Mamta M. Mamik, Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. "An adult can safely consume up to 400 milligrams of caffeine a daywhich is equivalent to four 8-ounce cups of coffeebut drinking any more than that can cause calcium excretion, which, over time, may lead to osteoporosis. Avoiding excess caffeine also helps to ward off uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms like lethargy, insomnia, headaches, and irritability."

3

"Although I love them, I try to stay away from cream-based soups. They not only bother my stomach, but they are also loaded with empty calories and often have concerning fillers like hydrolyzed proteins, food dyes and corn syrup that I find out about later!" says, Dr. Taz Bhatia, integrative health expert and author of The 21-Day Belly Fix.

4

"I try to avoid foods that contains trans fats, corn syrup, and added sugars," says Eugenia Gianos, MD, cardiologist, Co-Clinical Director, Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease at NYU Langone Medical Center. "Often listed as hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils, synthetically engineered trans-fats increase your bad (LDL) cholesterol levels and decrease your good (HDL) cholesterol levels, upping your risk of heart attack and stroke." Oftentimes, grocery chains or bakers will use partially hydrogenated oils to extend the shelf life of their "fresh" baked goods. Besides the potential for PHOs, these pastries are often times calorie-dense, and won't do much to keep you energized all morning.

5

"I avoid soymilk," notes Guillem Gonzalez-Lomas, MD, sports medicine specialist and assistant professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center. "Yes, the horror stories linking overconsumption of soy products to estrogen-like effectslike the development of enlarged breasts in otherwise healthy malesare exceptional. However, the fact is that soy mimics estrogen and activates estrogen receptors in the body. Do you want to take that risk? There are plenty of other milk substituteslike almond milkthat don't carry the same potential side effects."

6

"As a plastic surgeon, I'm always thinking about my figure," says New York City-based physician, Lara Devgan, MD. "To that end, I never eat energy bars or granola bars. Although they can be tasty, for the amount of calorie-dense carbs and fat they contain, you might as well eat a candy bar. Many of these bars are packed with simple sugars, and they aren't quite filling enough to substitute for a meal or snack."

7

"This is as far removed from a natural egg as you can get," says Dana James CDN, a nutritionist from Food Coach NYC. "Heat pasteurized and made from factory-farmed eggs, this product is processed so much that makers actually have to add in synthetic vitamins to boost its nutrient density. "Go for the real thing instead," says James. Choline, found in eggs, lean meats, seafood and collard greens, attacks the gene mechanism that triggers your body to store fat around your liver.

8

A fruit smoothie sounds like a virtuous choice for an afternoon pick-me-up, but be forewarned: Many store-bought options are blended with high-calorie dairy bases and cheap sweeteners that make them more dessert-like than diet-friendly. Take Naked's Might Mango Fruit Smoothie, which has 57 grams of sugar per bottle.

9

"Talk about turning a good food bad," says Leah Kaufman, MS, RD, CDN a New York City-based Registered Dietitian. "When you transform produce into juice, you take away its fiberone of the major benefits of consuming whole fruits and vegetables. What you wind up with is a drink that's so concentrated with sweetness, it can have as much sugar as a soda." More and more research has begun to show that some fruits are actually better at fighting belly fat than others. And the master fruits all have one thing in common: they're red, or at least reddish. Raspberries, strawberries, blueberriesthey're packed with polyphenols, powerful natural chemicals that can actually stop fat from forming.

10

"I don't drink soda. A long time ago cola had cocaine in it, and it's arguably gotten even more unhealthy since then," says Gonzalez-Lomas. "Most sodas contain phosphorus, which binds to calcium and increases calcium loss, which is terrible for bone health. Plus, just one can is filled with 40 grams of sugarthe equivalent of 20 sugar cubeswhich makes it challenging for the body to maintain healthy glucose and insulin levels. And diet soda is potentially worse. Diet beverages contain low doses of carcinogens and artificial sweeteners that have potentially dangerous effects on the brain and metabolism. While everything in moderation is reasonable, I steer clear of sodashigh risk, no reward."

11

"One of the leading health food impostors!" says Lisa Moskovitz, RD, founder of The NY Nutrition Group. "One tiny cup of granola has nearly 600 calories, 30 grams of fat, and 24 grams of sugar. That's the equivalent of starting your morning with two slices of cheesecake." Moskovitz adds, "If I want a crunch cereal, I'll go for a lighter alternative like Cheerios or Special K. They pack the same satisfying crunch with a fraction of the calories, fat, and sugar," she says.

12

"I eat a very clean, plant-based diet so the avoid list is long for me. However, even for those who eat meat, the processed varieties are a bad choice," warns David L. Katz, MD, MPH, Director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center and President of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. "While the link between meat and chronic disease is fairly tenuous, the connection between salt-, sugar- and chemical-laden processed meats and chronic disease risk is strong and consistent. If you eat meat, it should be purelike you want your own muscles to be. If you eat the highly processed, adulterated meats they may pay it forward to the meat on your own bones."

13

"I avoid any product marketed as 'low-fat.' Typically, these items are extensively processed and packed with chemicals that are added to try to achieve the consistency or reproduce the flavor of the full-fat models on which they are based," explains Rebekah Gross, MD, a gastroenterologist at the Joan H. Tisch Center for Women's Health at NYU Langone Medical Center. "I'd rather indulge in a smaller portion of a food naturally high in fat or sugar than ingest an artificial substitute. In most cases, the real deal tastes better, is more satisfying, and doesn't cause the gastrointestinal upset that can be associated with highly processed foods," says Gross.

14

"It's called ketchup because, over time, it's going to catch up to you," jokes Moskovitz. "Just two measly tablespoons has up to 8 grams of sugar and 40 calories. And most of those calories come from high fructose corn syrup, which has been shown to increase appetite and, over time, lead to health problems such as obesity and diabetes." If you really can't live without the stuff, "use an all-natural version with no added sugar, chemicals or HFCS," says Moskovitz.

15

"Most cold cerealseven the ones that seem healthyare carb-laden, sweet and highly processed. They are definitely not the breakfast of championsat least not thin champions," says Lauren Slayton, MS, RD, founder of Foodtrainers. Instead, "Starting your day with lean protein, like eggs, is the best way to ensure that you'll stay energized and full into early afternoon," says Slayton.

16

"I avoid flavored coffee creamers because they are filled with fake ingredients that can do more harm than the flavor is worth: trans fats, artificial sweeteners, carrageenan and artificial coloring," says Gina Consalvo, MA, RD, LDN, Pennsylvania-based owner of Eat Well with Gina. "Over time, your morning shot of non-dairy creamer can raise dangerous LDL cholesterol levels and increase the risk of blood clots and heart attack. "Lighten your coffee with a half and half that only lists milk and cream as ingredients," she says.

17

"Nutella is one of those foods that people believe to be healthy because it contains a nut," says Kaufman. "But check the ingredients: spreads like Nutella are primarily sugar and palm oil, with almost no actual nuts involved. With over 20 grams of added sugar and only two grams of protein, the spread just winds up at your waist."

Americans typically eat only one-third of their recommended daily intake, so you may be surprised to hear us knock any form of vegetable. Unfortunately, we've got to go there. Why? Some veggies of this variety are stored in cans that are laced with BPA, an industrial chemical used in various food and beverages containers. "There is a lot of controversy around BPA," says Consalvo. "It is thought to pose some health risks in fetuses, infants and young children's brain development." She notes that there are many brands that are now using BPA-free cans and hard plastics. We suggest going with fresh or frozen veggies, which tend to be healthier and free of salt and preservatives, too.

19

"We've been conditioned to look for low-cost food instead of the high-quality food," Dan Roberts, celebrity trainer and creator of Methodology X tells us. "Now, to eat organic seems like a luxury when it really isn't. For both moral and health reasons (it's free of growth hormones), I always buy and eat free-range organic chicken."

20

Jim White RD, ACSM HFS, Owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios says that "White bread has been bleached and stripped of its bran and germ, the elements of the grain that contain beneficial nutrients. For this reason, white bread isn't very filling, has almost no nutritional value and is converted into sugar once you eat it. Like table sugar, it then spikes insulin levels, which promotes fat storage." Jay Cardiello, NSCA, personal-trainer to the stars, adds, "Also, don't get caught up in phrases like, 'made with whole grains'. This catchy phrase can make you think your bread is a healthy choice, but it only means that the bread is made up of a mixture of whole-wheat flour and some other less nutritious flour that won't benefit your health."

21

"Tossing back a handful of candy may not seem like a big deal, but it's the equivalent of chowing down on pure sugar. I would never do that and neither should anyone else," explains Lori-Ann Marchese, fitness celebrity and owner of Body Construct LLC.

Pendle teacher ready to share secrets of her success after shedding an incredible three stone in lockdown – Clitheroe Advertiser

Although she started to lose weight at the end of January, Karen actually managed to shed two stone and two pounds during the lockdown period from March to July.

She credits healthy eating, cutting back on alcohol and walking for her success which inspired teacher Karen, who lives in Nelson, to train as a consultant for Slimming World and her classes begin next week.

Karen, who turns 55 next week, said: "Walking has definitely been the key to success for me.

"During lockdown I was out every day doing three mile walks. It wasn't hard work because we have so many lovely walks in our beautiful countryside.

"And now I can go out and walk for hours, I love it. I decided to train as a consultant because, while I have managed to lose weight in the past, it has always gone back on.

"Becoming a consultant will give me focus and incentive to keep it off."

A teacher of RE and Health and Social Care at Rhyddings Business and Enterprise School in Oswaldtwistle Karen is also a former 'Redcoat' at Butlin's in Minehead so she will take to her role as a consultant with ease.

She said: "Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK. When I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight but now I just cant wait to get started.

"After losing three stone and completing my training, its a privilege for me to be able to pass on the experience,

insight and understanding that helped me, so that I can give my members the support they need to get to target, then to stay there.

Support is really the most important thing. It all starts with feeling that youre not alone. I couldnt have lost three stone without the weekly help, encouragement and understanding of my own consultant and group.

"As someone who has lost weight myself I know the challenges people can face, which is why, along with the group, I will be there to support every one of my members all the way to their chosen target weight.

"Setting targets, sharing recipes and other ideas, and working together as a group to overcome challenges and celebrate success is so important to a successful journey. Thats why, at my group, therell be tons of support, encouragement and fun."

Karen, who has been nominated for a local Woman of the Year award, joined the Sliimming World class at Barrowford to lose weight in time for her son, Adam's wedding in August.

Dropping from a dress size 18 to a 12 to 14 was just the boost Karen needed to look a million dollars as the mother of the groom. But the wedding has been postponed until May, 2021, and Karen, who has been married to her husband Steve for 31 years, has her outfit all ready for the big day.

Karen added: Like a lot of slimmers, I had tried to lose weight so many times before by following other diets, but they were never sustainable because Id always get tired of restricting what I ate.

"I thought I was destined to struggle with my weight for the rest of my life, but when I came to Slimming World it was different. I had never been able to say what weight I wanted to be. It didnt feel like I was on a diet due to the foods that I could eat.

"The eating plan encourages you to eat lots of tasty, filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and lean meat and fish.

"Therefore, you are never hungry and no foods are banned so theres no deprivation. I couldnt believe Id found a way to lose weight without starving myself and still being able to have some of the naughty foods that we all enjoy. You can still go out for meals and eat foods without other people realising you are changing your habits.

"In fact quite often people will say to me can you really eat that?' "

Jen Blevins, who runs a Slimming World group in Burnley and manages Karen as a team developer, said: "Slimming World consultants are chosen for their positive outlook and because they genuinely care about the health and happiness of others.

"With Karens experience of being a successful Slimming World member and her kind and warm personality and great sense of humour I just know that shell be an amazing support to members, cheering them all the way to their target weight.

Karens Slimming World group will be held at Read and Simonstone Village Hall every Monday evening from Monday, October 5th. For more information or to join Karens group call her on 07878210114.

Weight loss success for Co Down mum who shed more than five stone in just seven months – Belfast Live

Just one year ago, Joanne Morgan struggled to walk down the stairs without grimacing in pain, she struggled to enjoy playing with her children due to constant exhaustion caused by her aches and pains and slow recovery after major surgery.

Now, the 32-year-old Co Down woman has a spring in her step and has never felt better after shedding 5 stone, 5 lbs in just 7 months.

Joanne credits WW, the new Weight Watchers with helping her lose weight and keep it off, as well as improving her quality of life tenfold.

Having struggled with her weight on and off for years, Joannes frustration at not being able to shed the pounds increased after she underwent a hysterectomy in January 2019.

I didnt know what weight I was when I started WW I just knew I had a lot of weight on. The year before I started, I got out of hospital on New Year' s Day, I had to have a hysterectomy and I sort of was in a rough wee place at the start of last year. I just wasnt 100% and I knew myself I had the weight on and I was sort of trying to get it off but it wasnt coming off and I was really stressing myself out about it.

An unexpected trip to visit her brother and newborn baby in Australia gave Joanne a whole new outlook and she started to realise she had the mental drive to lose weight if she was really focused.

Whilst I was there [in Australia] I went for this walk along the coast and I just thought to myself how lucky I was to have my children and things like that. My friend had joined WW the week I left for Australia and I told her I would join when I was ready. I kept getting told as well by the surgeon and the doctors to give myself a year's recovery and I did, and as soon as I did that and I got my head and my hormones right, after Christmas-the first week of January, I joined WW and never looked back.

At her heaviest Joanne was 16stone 1lb and set herself a goal of losing 5 stone 5lbs, and she achieved that, in just 7 months using the WW programme. Joanne says it was bad food choices which led her to pile on the pounds, particularly her fondness for chocolate and takeaways, but now, she still enjoys both, just in moderation.

My downfall was basically bad choices with food, anything convenient, couldnt be bothered cooking dinner tonight, we will get McDonalds, we will get Friar Tucks, takeaways and chocolate were the two things that I pinpointed as my issue.

The best thing about WW is still being able to have your treats and you can easily track everything, everything is so easy to find on the tracker app and you can carry over some of your points if you know you have a meal out or drinks coming up at the weekend, you can still enjoy those things and lose weight.

WW is definitely an easy plan to follow, its not tough and you have so much variety. I would be obsessed with chocolate bars and what I do now is instead of having say a Snickers, I would have two Skinny Whip bars and its still less points than a Snickers, Im very much I need my chocolate fix every day but on WW I can have that.

As well as her svelte new figure, with losing the weight, also came added health benefits for the mum-of-two, who struggled for years with chronic pain/

I would have suffered from chronic pain in my back, I broke my tail bone quite a few times and have had surgery on my right shoulder twice, and the left one wouldnt be that great either. But I was getting reflexology and dry needling done for the aches and pains, but once I started to lose the weight I cut down on those appointments, the pain subsided and now I would get the dry needling done maybe only once a month.

She also believes daily walks have helped improve her mobility and helped with the weight loss.

I walked the bit out as well, I walk once a day minimum, if its my day off Ill try and get two smaller walks in and it keeps my head right as well. If I was in a bad place and it was usually over my health and not having the energy to do the things like not being able to do what I want to do with my children because I was constantly tired. But now with the weight off Im jumping out of the bed. I used to have to walk downstairs sideways due to the pain in my back and my legs and the weight didnt help that so I feel so much better now.

Despite the temptation that surrounds her daily whilst working in a busy fast-food cafe, Joanne says she was kept on track by her local WW coach Deirdre Murdock.

My WW coach Deirdre Murdock was so supportive, everyone that is thinking of going to WW in the Newry/Warrenpoint area, Deirdre is brilliant, shes so authoritative, she gives brilliant advice and words of wisdom, were always waiting every week for her wee one liners. When lockdown came I had hit the three stone off and I thought Im not giving up on her either because she is so good and I didnt want to let her down, never mind myself.

I was made redundant from my job last year and I thought I was just getting myself together before I got that wee job in the cafe and I felt it wasnt probably the right job for me to go into with the weight on but it suited with the children and school hours but I still managed to lose the weight.

Urging anyone who was in a similar position of wanting to lose weight but unsure of how to get started, the Newry woman added: First of all, as long as your head is in it and youre ready to do it for you. And just stop making excuses! I made excuses for years as to why I was putting on a few pounds here and there and its not doing you any good. Just be ready, be prepared to give it your all. WW is so manageable and so realistic, there is nothing you cant have in moderation, but you need to be in control.

Are you a lover of Style, Beauty or Interiors? Maybe you want the latest tips on keeping fit, eating right, organising your home and staying well, not to mention all the latest showbiz goss and the craic around town then follow Belfast Live's brand new lifestyle page Be.

You can find us on Facebook ,Twitter and Instagram.

Everyone says to me you did so well because I work in a fast-food cafe and the temptation is real with the goujons and big fat fries and I could have carried that on but I didnt, its a lot about self-control and a positive mindset."

Operation Transformation doesnt need to lose stones and pounds, says regulator – The Irish Times

Operation Transformation, the RT One television show that tracks peoples attempts to lose weight, is not obliged by law to use metric units of measurement and can stick with imperial stones and pounds, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) compliance committee has ruled.

The verdict follows a complaint to the broadcasting regulator that suggested the reality TV programmes avoidance of metric units kilogram and gram was not complying with a statutory instrument and that by focusing on imperial units, RT was both breaching legislation and undermining the authority of the State.

In its response, RT noted the EU legislation, introduced in 2005, allows for derogations reflecting cultural traditions and that stones, pounds and ounces are in everyday use in Ireland. It denied that Operation Transformation was undermining the authority of the State.

The BAI compliance committee agreed, saying there was no evidence to support the view that Operation Transformation either undermined the authority of the State or infringed the requirements of the BAIs code of programme standards.

Separately, the BAIs executive complaints forum rejected a complaint against RT Radio 1s arts programme Arena after it broadcast a clip of the pandemic-themed film Outbreak that included a character using the term f***ing s***. A complainant objected to the broadcast without warning of this language, which aired at 7.15pm, saying his three young children were listening to the programme at the time.

RT said Arena was not a childrens programme and that, by definition, the arts often involved challenging material, including content that some might consider offensive. This was a well-established audience expectation, it said. In the context of a discussion about two Hollywood pandemic films aimed at adults Outbreak and Contagion it was not deemed necessary or appropriate to advise on the nature of the language in the clip.

The BAI agreed that Arena had not been unduly offensive by broadcasting Outbreaks sweary dialogue.

Two other complaints were not upheld. Michael Tomney, a League of Ireland referee, complained to the regulator after RT sports commentator George Hamilton mistakenly said during pre-match commentary of the 2019 FAI Cup Final that he had not before refereed an FAI Cup Final. Mr Tomney, who referred the FAI Cup Final in 1995, said the inaccurate remark had caused him personal harm and discomfort, and negatively impacted on his reputation.

RT said the comment was human error and no disrespect or harm was intended. The BAI compliance committee said it considered it unfortunate that this error occurred but agreed with RT that as the broadcast was not a news and current affairs programme, it was not covered by the BAIs code of fairness, objectivity and impartiality in news and current affairs.

The BAI executive complaints forum also dismissed a complaint about a radio ad by the Road Safety Authority, which aired on Newstalk. The complainant alleged it was misleading to instruct pedestrians to always walk on the right-hand side of the road, facing oncoming traffic, if no footpath is provided.

Newstalk responded that RSA is the body charged with keeping road users safe, while the RSAs advertising agency, BBDO, said the advice on pedestrian safety was based on the legal requirements, as contained in the RSAs Rules of the Road.

Why gyms shouldn’t close if there’s a second lockdown – Telegraph.co.uk

But that has been indicative of the continuing disconnect between government messaging on health and wellbeing and their approach so far to the leisure industry.

Weve seen hospitality benefit from the Eat Out to Help Out campaign and VAT relief, but no such support for our sector.

When the government did launch their Better Health campaign to help people lose weight, get active and eat better, it was based around banning unhealthy food adverts and calorie labelling, not encouraging people back into gyms.

The outdated thinking at government level is also demonstrated by their language, which always focuses on losing weight. Clients at Barrys often come for one reason, and yes, that might be more toned arms or a six-pack. But nine times out of ten they stay for something else completely, and thats a mental, not physical thing.

Its one hour of the day for themselves, where they are able to achieve something that makes them feel better almost immediately, thanks to the happy chemicals of endorphins, dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin that you experience from exercising.

With the pandemic clearly taking a huge toll on peoples mental wellbeing, and suicide rates at their highest in two decades, we should be encouraging our communities to exercise not just to lose weight, but also to improve their mental health.

Our Prime Minister, however, just jokes that if you exercise before breakfast, at least you know nothing for the rest of the day could be worse. Thanks for nothing, Boris.

Instead of coming up with popular strategies to save Christmas surely this government should be thinking longer term. Gyms and fitness studios are not just committed to keeping the nation fit and healthy - both physically and mentally. They are also some of the safest and cleanest places in the country, full of people for whom health is a priority. They must be kept open.

Nutrisystem Launches Innovative Partner Plan to Encourage and Help Maintain Weight Loss – WFMZ Allentown

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 8, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --Nutrisystem, a Tivity Healthbrand, announced today the launch of its new Nutrisystem Partner Plan, a program designed to enable two people living in the same home to experience the benefits of losing weight together. Studies continue to show that dieting with a partner leads to greater success and helps people maintain their weight loss.

According to a recent JAMA study, individuals are more likely to lose five percent or more weight if their partner joins them. A five percent weight loss is considered clinically significant to reaping health benefits like reduced risks of developing diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancer. Evidence suggests that people tend to exhibit the health behaviors of those around them and that partners greatly influence that behavior, especially in relation to diet and exercise. For Nutrisystem customers, social support and accountability are two factors proven to facilitate weight loss. Now, the Partner Plan offers Nutrisystem customers a shared experience to leverage those factors.

"Eating is a social event and with the new Nutrisystem Partner Plan, friends and loved ones can enjoy meals together," said Tommy Lewis, President, Nutrisystem. "We are less likely to stay on a weight loss program when we feel like we're all alone. Having a built-in support system at home means you'll be able to motivate and celebrate each other as you hit goals. In today's climate, it is more important than ever for our health to connect with and lean on the strength of loved ones."

On the Nutrisystem Partner Plan, customers will receive one shipment every two weeks that includes meals and snacks for two people at one great price. The program also provides free access to the NuMiapp, unlimited support with Nutrisystem weight loss counselors and dietitians by phone or online any day of the week, and free shipping.

Customers can lose weight while eating the foods they love, made healthier. The program meets, or in most cases exceeds, recommendations set forth in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The plans include the right mix of nutrients to fuel your body - plenty of healthy, lean protein; high fiber to help keep you feeling fuller, longer; low-glycemic carbohydrates to stabilize blood sugar; and never contain artificial sweeteners or flavors.

Those with specific dietary needs can customize their program to include diabetes-friendly foods, vegetarian foods, or to exclude foods that contain milk, wheat, nuts, and more. Customers can tap into the knowledgeable team of Nutrisystem weight loss counselors to help them select foods that work for both partners' needs.

Pacing it right – Sabrina Pace-Humphreys on her 100-mile run – Runner’s World (UK)

Sabrina Pace-Humphreys, 42, is a mother of four and grandmother of two, who took up running 11 years ago to lose weight and manage depression. The inclusivity campaigner, coach, Runner's World cover star and inov-8 ambassador just ran 100 miles...

Ive lived in the Cotswolds since I was two, so the Cotswold Way (CW) is a trail Ive always been aware of and trained on. My plan was to qualify for the Cotswold Way Century race, but COVID put paid to that, along with two other mountain races. I needed a focus in lockdown, so I made it my mission to recce the CW. And once I had, I thought Why not run it as my own challenge?. I wanted it to be as close the race conditions as possible and my goal was sub-30 hours.

I believe in being specific for races and I came to know each nook and cranny of the CW over three months. This was coming off marathon training, where I knocked eight minutes off my PB and which set me up well for running on very tired legs.

It was one hell of an experience. The CW is not to be underestimated. There are a lot of ascents and descents in the first 60 miles and its technical too, a mixture of rocks, stone, chalk and mud. My legs felt great, which is testament to a good S&C programme. However, I started suffering with nausea which became quite severe from about mile 20 to mile 70. The feeling of being on the edge of being sick was absolutely awful. At 55 miles in, it brought me to my knees that was a pretty dark affair. However, I had a great team around me and once I managed to get through the night a new sense of I can do this came over me. I was lucky to be joined by my coach, Damian Hall, and another friend. They helped speed me back up and I managed to finish in 29 hours and 24 minutes.

The lowest was the climb from Stroud up to Coaley Peak; 2.5 miles uphill with my nausea at its worst and I had to have words with myself.

The highest point was the last viewpoint, at Bath Racecourse, with 5K to go. Even though my quads were smashed, I started to believe I could get the sub 30 hours. I zipped up my wo(man) suit and got it done.

I still cant quite believe I completed my first ever 100 miles in the midst of a pandemic. Im so happy I had it to focus on when everything else in life was so up and down. Running has given me that: a constant.

Since we launched Black Trail Runners in July, the response has been largely positive. We are campaigning for greater access, skills and representation of black people in trail running. We want to create a safe, open community for black trail runners across the board, from newcomers to experienced ultrarunners. The response to our first campaign, a call for greater transparency when it comes to including questions about ethnicity on race registrations (in order for us to inform future campaigns and policies) has been positive. Our community continues to grow every day.

From a community point of view, if you are a black person who wants to experience trail running, connect with others, share experiences, trail runs, skills or get involved in more representation, all in a safe community, then join our Facebook group (by searching Black Trail Runners). We are also on Instagram @blacktrailrunners or visit http://www.blacktrailrunners.com

From a campaigning point of view, if you are at a trail race, have a look around you. If you believe, as we do, theres an issue with the lack of diversity in trail running, then speak to the event organiser and ask them what they are doing to encourage more Black Trail Runners to the sport. If you want to give them a helping hand, direct them to contact us.

I have beef with the mountains. In 2021, its all about Sabs versus the mountains!

How to lose weight: 71-year-old loses 62 pounds in 6 months – TODAY

After a lifetime of feeling uncomfortable in her body, Mary Carney wanted to do something about her weight and health. At 71, she was upset by how she looked and wanted to have more energy. But she wasnt quite sure how to start.

My clothes looked horrible. I didnt look good in them, Carney, now 78, of Summerville, South Carolina, told TODAY. I didnt like the way I looked or the way I felt.

Carney knew that losing weight was imperative to her health.

I walked down a long stairway, I got halfway down and I was panting, I said to myself, This is silly, she said. I thought I have got to do something to lose the weight and get back that energy I had before.'"

Thats when she found Autumn Calabrese, a popular Beachbody fitness trainer, and her 21 Day Fix workout program. Carney decided to try it and over six months, she went from 197 pounds to about 135 pounds.

That is crazy at my age, Carney said. At the end of the program, I did a five-minute plank.

While her friends were impressed that she could hold a plank for so long, ride a bike and walk on the beach without getting winded, Carney credits her success to how easy it was to follow the 21 Day Fix. The plan focuses on exercise, including weight training, and developing healthy eating habits, which incorporate fruits, vegetables, lean protein and portion control. Calabrese also provides modifications for workouts so even now at 78 and nursing an injury, Carney can exercise safely.

She did a great thing for me, made me feel energized coming from a size 18/20 to a size 6/8, Carney said.

Trending stories, celebrity news and all the best of TODAY.

While Carney lost about 60 pounds in her early 70s, she recently injured herself and regained some of that weight. On top of moving less, she often ate mindlessly in front of the TV and would snack on something sugary, causing the weight to creep back.

When she noticed that she couldnt keep up with her grandchildren, she knew exactly what she had to do to lose weight and enjoy her time with her 6-year-old twin grandsons Grayson and Gunner.

Anyone who has grandchildren wants to be able to play with them, she said. I want to feel better about myself and be able to play with my grandchildren.

So she recommitted to the 21 Day Fix. Now, she especially likes that she has containers for the proper portions for meals.

Calabrese describes what food to put in the containers so you dont overeat, she said. My energy now, I just cant believe it. I just started back.

Calabrese featured Carneys story in her recent book Lose Weight Like Crazy Even if You Have a Crazy Life. Carney believes that shes proof that anyone at any age can lose weight and improve their health.

It is a successful way, a good energetic way of losing your weight through the 21 Day Fix. You wont hurt yourself. You wont feel bad, she said. You will feel a lot better.

Here are her tips that motivated her to develop healthy habits.

Being overweight kept Carney from enjoying her time with her family.

When your grandchildren come up to you and ask, Can you please get up? Can we take a walk? When you are heavier, you are sluggish and you just want to sit and color, she said. That woke me up again. I did not have the energy or the stamina.

After losing the weight, she's able to be more active with Gunner and Grayson.

It is just beautiful, she said.

Carney loves that the plan clearly explains what she should eat and how she can exercise and it includes modifications so she can easily work out.

She planned it out so thoroughly, Carney said. Its a great thing for anybody of any age.

Carney wanted to lose weight so she could enjoy her life and be active with her family. Being committed to her health goals led to her success.

You cant lose anything by trying it. You will be amazed at what you can succeed at in life if you commit yourself to doing it, she said. I really feel great about myself. I have so much energy.
