Constant Dieters Might Be Choosing the Wrong Way to Lose Weight – UPJ Athletics

Dieters looking for a healthier substitute of their favorite high-fat foodsuch as a bag of potato chipstypically have two choices in the grocery aisle: a smaller package of the exact same food or a larger portion of a light version. In a series of studies, we put this choice to consumers and found that people who frequently try to cut back on their eating or are essentially always on a dietknown as restrained eatersprefer the larger portion size of the light version, even though both contained the exact same number of calories. Participants who indicated that they rarely dieted tended to pick the smaller size with the full flavor.
Our first study involved a vending machine choice between a medium-sized bag of Lays Baked BBQ potato chips and a smaller package of the regular versionboth 150 calories. Participants who took a survey in which they reported frequently trying to cut back on their eatingfor example, by taking smaller servings and skipping mealsopted for the larger bag of baked chips. We got similar results over four additional studies involving other snacks, such as popcorn and cookies.
People tend to want food to be tasty, healthy and filling. Our studys restrained eaters were definitely interested in choosing a snack that seemed healthier, but their choice of the larger size suggested they wanted a snack that they felt would make them feel full as wellpossibly at the expense of taste. Feeling full can help people consume fewer calories overall.
The problem is research suggests eating more of lighter foods might not make people feel full, and this may point to a reason why most diets fail. Some psychologists argue that restrained eaters do not achieve the health and weight outcomes they desire possibly because, in depriving themselves of the fattier, tastier food, they may later engage in binge-eating or overconsume.
By opting for the lighter, less pleasurable food, even in larger packages, restrained eaters might be depriving themselves of the food they actually craveregular chips, buttered popcorn or a sugary cookie.
More research is ultimately needed, however, to test whether the emphasis on increasing the portion sizes that one can eat of light foods, rather than focusing on eating smaller portions of foods that are more satisfying, is a successful long-term strategy. Or, as past research indicates, might it actually backfire and contribute to failed dieting? Its still not entirely clear.
At the moment, we are working on new research examining how people decide what to eat, how much to eat and how frequently to eat it. For example, why do some people decide to try to avoid any treats, whereas others try to seek moderation? If they seek moderation in their diet, would they rather have a small treat every day or have a cheat day on the weekend?
Were also trying to understand whether or not consumers actually feel as full as they think they do by eating more lighter foods rather than less of calorie-dense foods.
We use a variety of approaches in our research on food, including conducting lab and online-based experiments, field studies and exploring existing data sets, such as food diary data. For this particular research, we recruited participants to pick chips out of a vending machine and used online panels to simulate real-world choices.

The Pitch Perfect star has lost over 40 pounds since she began her weight loss journey.
She previously spoke about losing weight and becoming healthier in anexclusive interview with The Sun.
The actress said: "Weirdly this year was always going to be the year of health. I've been naming my years now, and, that's kind of having these resolutions but for the whole year.
"I always thought that I may be psychic and I always felt this year I wasn't really going to work much.
"I turned 40 as well in March and so I thought, this is gonna be it. This is going to be the year for me to just concentrate on the health benefits."

Also during the interview, Rebel revealed that she was paid to remain at a certain weight for different film roles.
She explained: "It's not like I want to lose weight and get to around a certain number.
"It's more than that, it's about dealing mentally with with why I was overeating and I had a job where I was paid a lot of money to be bigger, at times which kind of can mess with your head a bit."
The star added: "So now I'm just trying to work on the mental side and the physical job and doing a lot of personal training and, and on the nutrition side like it's, it's cool.

John Robertson reveals Caley Thistle signing Shane Sutherland’s drive to lose weight and take full-time chance – Press and Journal
Caley Thistle manager John Robertson says Shane Sutherland has undertaken a rigorous fitness programme with a view to grasping his full-time opportunity.
Former Elgin City forward Sutherland signed a pre-contract to rejoin Inverness for a second spell in January, with his contract at Caledonian Stadium starting in July.
The 29-year-old returns to the club he left in 2013, having spent the last seven years with part-time clubs Elgin and Peterhead.
Despite having not played or trained since March, Robertson revealed Sutherland has lost around 6kg in recent months in a fitness drive geared towards being ready for the Championship campaign.
Robertson said: We spoke to Shane, who had not long come back from an injury he suffered just after we signed him in January.
The players were sending in their weights during lockdown. We were kidding on with Shane at that time that he was probably the heaviest player at the club. He wasnt happy because he thought he was lighter than Mark Ridgers, and we were having a bit of fun about it.
Shane was part-time and coming back from injury, so he was 92kg. The following month he was a shade over 90kg, the following month he was down to 88kg and hes now 86kg. That shows the determination Shane has to hit the ground running.
Sutherland has netted 99 goals across four spells with Elgin, while also scoring 15 goals in two spells which amounted to 18 months with Peterhead. Despite playing at a lower level, Robertson feels Sutherland has developed since his last spell with Caley Jags.
Robertson added: He has scored goals for this club before. He has been here, Elgin, Peterhead, Elgin, Peterhead, Elgin and back to here, and if you look at his record he has scored goals for everybody.
Its a lower level, but if you are a goalscorer you are a goalscorer. We are hopeful Shane can keep up his percentage of goals.
Robertson hopes Sutherland can be one of many goalscoring outlets this season, with the boss still hoping to add to his frontline. He added: Shane brings great competition. He can play as a striker, off the front or wide right coming off the left.
We hope Aaron Doran and James Keatings continue to chip in with close to double figures, while Miles Storey has shown he can play out wide or as a striker and Nikolay Todorov got seven goals from not many appearances.
If we can get Roddy MacGregor and Daniel MacKay firing and hopefully add one more, we have great flexibility in the front men and good competition.

I had a doctors appointment earlier this week. Every visit starts the same way: Im led back to an exam room and immediately told to step onto a scale. This weeks visit was no different.
What was different this week was what the nurse said to me when she came in to take my blood pressure and temperature. She mentioned happily that I had lost eight pounds since my last visit a month ago. I scratched my head a little and said, Uh, thats great!
I knew I had lost a couple of pounds because I vaguely remembered how much I tipped the scales when I was weighed at the end of last month, but I was surprised because I really had made no concerted effort to exercise more in that short period of time. I knew my eating habits had changed a little over the summer. In simple terms, I hadnt been eating as much as I normally did, and I didnt eat as often. I had also covered several assignments for the paper during which I walked around quite a bit.
Like most Americans, I had been under standing orders from my doctor to lose weight, so my achievement prompted the nurse to check my records to see how much I weighed during an appointment I had on June 1. The nurse immediately spun her laptop around and started pointing to a list that showed my weight over the past six months. Somehow, between June 1 and this week, I had shed a total of 30 pounds. And I hadnt even realized it.
At first I thought, Uh oh. Unexplained weight loss can be a sign of a serious health problem. But I dismissed that idea, despite my tendency to think like a hypochondriac. Over the past couple of months, I had undergone some scans and a number of blood tests during a biannual checkup on a health condition I have. Things had checked out OK, and the more I thought about what and how much I had been eating lately, it started to add up.
For most of my life, I have been one those people who never met a carb he didnt like. Sweets, potato chips, bread it doesnt matter, I loved it and would eat a lot of it. But over the past few months, something changed. I didnt find myself craving that stuff so much. Combine that with the fact I had been going grocery shopping less frequently, and thus had fewer opportunities to buy junk food, and I had inadvertently started eating a somewhat healthier diet and one that included much fewer calories. I was happy with the result of my new eating habits, but since I had expended little or no effort, I couldnt take too much pride in my accomplishment. But I decided I wouldnt let it go to waste and committed myself to carry on with what I was doing, and more importantly what I wasnt doing, which was eating a bunch of garbage.
After my appointment, I messaged a friend and told him what had happened at the doctors office. He replied, So, youve been intermittent fasting. He explained what that meant (basically, you eat one meal a day 24 hours apart) and that he had been doing it himself since hed become a father a couple of years back. He has a sedentary lifestyle (hes a journalist, too) and is currently enjoying the benefits of married life. He offered some advice and encouragement, and I promised I would try to keep up what I was doing, whatever that was.
Ive still got a long road ahead of me to reach a healthy, ideal weight. I know if I live like a responsible adult (which isnt always easy for me), Ill get there one day. Its going to be a gradual process, and Ill need my doctors advice and guidance. Im just not going to overthink it, since being thoughtless seems to have gotten me this far.

She gave birth to her second child, Cairo, two years ago.
The actress says she took her time losing the weight and didn't feel rushed to "snap back."
Tia Mowry welcomed her second child, daughter Cairo, two years ago. And now, shes opening up about how she slowly lost a bunch of weight from her pregnancy.
Ive lost to date 68 pounds since giving birth to my daughter, Tia wrote in a new Instagram post alongside a pic of herself in cut-off jeans and a turtleneck sweater. Im very proud that I did it my way and in my time. I didnt feel rushed to snap back.
Tia also said she enjoyed breastfeeding and spending quality time with Cairo and her son Cree, 11. She wrapped up on this inspirational note: To all the women who are feeling pressured after birth. Do YOU! Do what makes YOU proud and do it in YOUR time. Not anyone elses. .
Tias famous friends showed up in the comments to cheer her on. Such a babe!!!! Love this and you and the hard work on YOUR time , wrote Daphne Oz. Great job, mama! said Vanessa Bryant.
This isnt the first time Tia has spoken out about the pressure to snap back after having a baby. Last October, she shared a pic of herself doing yoga on Instagram, and had some choice words for people who pressure postpartum women into losing weight quickly.
I was called fat during my pregnancy and I was called fat after my pregnancy, she wrote. Why do we do this to each other? Instead of love one another other? I will never understand that.

Tia said at the time that shes intentionally being open about her journey to show #women that its okay to go at your own pace, it is okay to love yourself no matter where you are in your journey.
Tia has shared little updates on her fitness journey here and there on Instagram. In December, she posted a video of herself doing lunges and Pilates exercises to Beyonces Who Runs the World. Shes also repeatedly stressed in her posts that self care isnt selfish.

Diligent handwashing, keeping a safe distance and a swanky face mask collection is all well and good, but our best insurance to swerve Covid-19 is to lose weight.
If youre carrying even a few extra pounds, odds are already stacked against you. Obesity increases risk of Covid-19 death by nearly 50%. A terrifying statistic and far higher than global experts thought.
If this doesnt shock people into losing weight what will?
Perhaps this weeks revelation that a successful vaccine wont work well for overweight people might.
Scientists say all the cards are stacked against the obese. But theyre still not listening even though fear is the populations current setting.
Fear of Covid, fear of the fear of Covid, fear of getting out and about, fear of going back to work, fear of sending children back to school, fear that the invisible virus lurks where we least expect it.
But the clearest protection from this fear, other than thorough hand washing, is maintaining a healthy weight. But people still have their fingers in their ears, blocking out the advice. Lalalala. Its just too difficult.
The hard facts are clear our immune system and ability to fight infection is compromised by extra weight. Flab around our stomachs visceral fat produces chemical signals making our immunity less effective, so anyone who is obese is at twice the risk of becoming seriously ill from coronavirus. Twice. A big statistic.
That means a 63% of adults in England. Another big statistic. A scary 63% of adults in England are overweight or obese. Many have obesity-associated conditions, are on multiple medications and their organ ages are much older than they actually are.
Obesity-related illnesses currently cost the NHS 6 billion a year. One in three children leaving primary school are overweight or obese.
This week, scientists in the most comprehensive study revealed that once a vaccine is available, it wont work well on overweight people.
And thats more of us now after four months of lockdown. Weve all joked about our Lockdown Lard and Covid Cushions. Its so easy to gain a stone comfort eating without realising but a huge challenge to lose it.
Sales of booze, snacks and ice cream soared during lockdown and two-thirds of British adults say they had put weight on, comfort eating to get through difficult times.
But losing a stone or more now is the best way to approach post-Covid life, especially with winter and a talked-of second spike on its way.
Shrink in September should be the national campaign.
Just how much we hold the power to reverse the damage we are doing to our bodies by eating too much is illustrated by Michael Moseleys Lose a Stone in 21 days on Channel 4 this month.
Adopting a Mediterranean low-carb diet of 800-1000 calories a day can dramatically reduce a persons heart age and reverse the chances of diabetes.
So why, if tweaking lifestyle can extend life span and banish life-threatening conditions so quickly, why arent we doing it?
Its depressing that people would rather pump themselves full of medication, be uncomfortable and unhealthy than doing something about it, choosing to stare death in the face, costing the NHS and missing out on so much life than taking their own future into their own hands.

In a curry house this week, having my one and only EATHO experience I cant be the only person to feel guilty about public money paying for half my vegetable saagwala knowing my sons will end up paying for the billions of pounds racked up all their working lives?
Looking around the restaurant, about 80% fell into the need to lose weight category. But they were there, piling up their plates because it was half price, not because they needed it.
Eat Double, Pay Half would have been a more fitting title.
Im still trying to work out how the invitation to gluttony fits with the governments Better Health campaign trying to get us all to lose weight.
But then were all slippery and in denial about how much we eat. Only 10% of British people who are clinically obese admit they are, thinking they are a bit overweight.
Women see it more than men, apparently.
Now we know the facts, and that a successful vaccine wont be effective, its irresponsible to carry on.
Parents are kicking up a fuss about sending children back to school next week but are willingly overweight?
The professor behind the global study at the University of North Carolina was shocked at just how at risk the obese really were. If it shocks the scientist, we should be petrified.
Exercise doesnt work alone. Key to weight loss is eating less. Smaller portions of healthy food.
It might feel like a person sentence, but its better than death or being wired to a ventilator in a coma for months, which is the reality.
Time really is of the essence here. Its important to start getting in shape, right now.
And only we can do it for ourselves.

According to THR, the love scenes between the two characters are extremely intimate, and Winslet describes the most explicit one.
"Saoirse and I choreographed the scene ourselves," Winslet says. "It's definitely not like eating a sandwich. I just think Saoirse and I, we just felt really safe. Francis [Lee, the director] was naturally very nervous. And I just said to him, 'Listen, let us work it out.' And we did. 'We'll start here. We'll do this with the kissing, boobs, you go down there, then you do this, then you climb up here.' I mean, we marked out the beats of the scene so that we were anchored in something that just supported the narrative. I felt the proudest I've ever felt doing a love scene on Ammonite. And I felt by far the least self-conscious."
Winslet is also proud of getting to act her age in the film, which included purposely not losing weight for the role.
"I'm nearly 45, and Saoirse is almost half my age," she points out. "And to have an opportunity to be my real 40-something self, post-children, you know? Women aren't really having the courage to do that. I was just excited to say, 'This is what it is, peeps. This is how I am now, and it's very much not the body I had 20 years ago.' And I also worked on maintaining that sort of heftiness to Mary. There is a grit to her, there's a weight to her. I changed up my exercise a little bit. I made sure that I didn't lose weight -- which I do a lot, actually, on films. I hate to talk about weight, but I only say it in the context of, it was a conscious effort on my part to really make sure that I didn't shrink or change myself for the sake of being naked. I did the opposite."
"It's a story about women speaking up, speaking out," she adds. "I think uncovering stories where women were repressed in such a systemic way is highlighting how history has covered up those successes. We're not going to do that anymore, world."
Later, Winslet is asked about working with multiple men who have faced sexual assault allegations, including Harvey Weinstein (2008's The Reader), Roman Polanski (2011's Carnage) and Woody Allen (2017's Wonder Wheel). Winslet says that she herself was "safe," and also praised those who have spoken out.
"It was very f**king real. Casting couches existed, yeah," she says. "All I can tell you is I was safe. I made sure I was. But this is a different time, and we're [now] protected by the stories of the brave people who have spoken out, and we have to look after one another, and we will not be disrespected, degraded, marginalized and undermined any f**king more. That's it. We're done. Boom!"
Back in 2017, Winslet told The Los Angeles Times that she deliberately did not thank Weinstein during her 2009 Oscars acceptance speech, when she won the Best Actress award for her role in The Reader.
"I remember being told, 'Make sure you thank Harvey if you win.' And I remember turning around and saying, 'No I won't. No I won't,'" she recalled. "And it was nothing to do with not being grateful. If people aren't well-behaved, why would I thank him?"
"The fact that I'm never going to have to deal with Harvey Weinstein again as long as I live is one of the best things that's ever happened and I'm sure the feeling is universal," she added.
At the 2018 London Critics' Circle film awards, she also said she had regrets over working with certain people in light of the Time's Up movement.
"As women around the world and from all walks of life marched last weekend, I realized that I wouldn't be able to stand here this evening and keep to myself some bitter regrets that I have about poor decisions to work with individuals with whom I wish I had not," she told the audience. "It has become clear to me that by not saying anything, I might be adding to the anguish of many courageous women and men. I know we all stand together in hoping that this moment in history paves the way for a transformed future for generation upon generation to come."

Dear Nutritionist, Ive been trying to lose weight. Im a middle-aged female (54) and have done Weight Watchers, but didnt keep the weight off. Im interested in giving Keto a try. so I would like to know if you think its a fad and also is it safe? Betty
Dear Betty,
I get asked this question a lot actually. I will go into my reasons below, but the short answer is no, its not a fad and yes, keto is safe for almost all people.
There are some medical conditions that make keto problematic, but that is not the vast majority of folks. Lets unpack the keto diet a bit to understand why its not a fad.
We have all seen diets come and go. Across the board its safe to say they would be unnecessary if we ate only natural food that we are biologically adapted to eat, in the right proportions, with some moderate movement in our daily lives.
Its a myth that dieting is natural. If we look at the vast majority of our history as a species, its food scarcity and not overeating that impacted mortality. In the developed countries to varying degrees we have now gone in the other direction.
Its also a myth that we need to be gym rats to be fit. Just look at 80-year-old farmers around the globe. Staying fit has to do with staying active and that can be any activity from work to house keeping to gardening to walking the dog to my personal favourite dancing around the living room. Movement keeps us fit. But diet keeps us slim.
Please read that again if you are interested in losing weight. Body composition is determined by your diet. You can not exercise off a bad diet. And trying to will leave you frustrated and often injured.
Consuming a healthy, biologically appropriate diet will get you to a good body composition meaning the fat to lean tissue ratio, which is what we are talking about when we talk about weight loss. If you are short and stout by nature, with a lot of muscle, you are never going to diet yourself twiggy. But you can be lean, with a nice shape and healthy fat distribution.
What does that mean?
Well, a healthy person has a little fat just under their skin all over their body. An unhealthy body holds fat in the middle. That is the primary indicator of longevity, heart disease, diabetes, and a whole host of other disease states.
If you want to know your risk, look at your waist to hip ratio. If the waist is bigger or even close to your hips, youre in trouble. If you have a muffin top over your jeans or look pregnant when youre not, you can stand to lose fat, no matter how thin your overall frame is. This will reduce your disease risk more than anything you can do.
This is where keto comes in.
Historically, our ancestors had periods of plenty and periods of scarcity. They would migrate to follow food. They never got to choose a diet, as we do today. They never had processed foods.
Even growing crops and using grains is relatively new in terms of our development! For the vast majority of our development as a species, we existed on what we could pick or dig and what we could hunt and catch in terms of animals.
Its also noteworthy that we used the entire animal in times of scarcity and in times of plenty there is evidence that dogs (which co-evolved with humans) ate the muscle meat while we ate the organ meat and bones. The organs were often consumed raw after a kill. Today (when dogs and humans eat natural food) that trend is reversed.
In this respect, our paleolithic ancestors would have naturally had cycles of ketosis because ketosis is what happens when the body runs on fats for fuel rather than carbohydrates or protein.
When game is the primary source of sustenance, fat becomes the natural fuel source for the body. Healthy human bodies dont use protein for energy in the presence of fat. And they dont burn fat in the presence of carbs. In a time when carbs were scarce (fruit in season, which was far less sweet than it is now, and a few tribes that used tubers more often) the body would naturally default to using fats for energy. This is ketosis. It is our natural state of being.
And its why the body stores energy as fat (the primary human fuel source) for times of scarcity. If we look at this even a century ago, we can see that even agricultural societies before the advent of modern food production and storage technology would lend itself to ketosis because carb-rich foods are ready in the autumn and would be consumed to pad the body for the famine of winter. Then, when winter scarcity set in, the body was using its own fat to survive. This is ketosis.
With a keto diet, the body becomes more efficient at using fat for energy because during that time it burns its own fat stores, which many people now want to take advantage of. It also decreases the strain on the digestive organs and decreases inflammation (as insulin and adenosine are both highly inflammatory and both are down-regulated with this diet).
A keto diet is also very low in allergens and does not contain anti-nutrients that vegetarian proteins contain. Its easier to digest. And it contains bones, the perfect source of minerals. No other mineral source is as healthy or as sustainable. And no other nutrient group is as essential for human health and longevity.
Werent there carbs historically speaking?
For the most recent agrarian part of our development there have been carbohydrate-rich foods but there were ways of consuming the carbs that made them healthier for us than what we do today.
First of all, there were no factories and processing them was lengthy so they were less plentiful. Bread was not the sticky, glutenous gooey nonsense we have today. The crop was different and the processing was different. Access was minimal due to the work to process it.
Maize (corn) was not the sweet crop we know today and it was always processed with lime or ash. This process is called nixtamalization. You can read more about it here. When this was not done there was an upsurge in pellagra, which causes psychosis, thinking problems, skin rashes, photosensitivity, and aggression.
Is it a coincidence we now have improperly processed corn in so many of our processed foods and are experiencing so many mental health conditions with these features today? Hmmmm...
Thus, returning to a diet that mimics the natural, evolutionary state of being adapted to using fat for energy (ketosis) is natural and healthy. Its often dismissed as a fad by people who say its not balanced enough or simply because its popular.
But thats what people thought about the automobile when it first came out. A fad. And dangerous. Totally impractical technology. But just because something becomes popular does not make it transitory in nature. Look at televisions. Look at industrialization. There are many many more examples.
The idea that ketosis is dangerous is fuelled by people who dont understand metabolism. They confuse it with ketoacidosis, which is very dangerous. But its an entirely different thing. The truth about the keto diet is that it can reverse a host of health conditions that other diets cant. Diabetes and metabolic syndrome alone are good enough reason to hail this diet, as it does more to reverse them than any other.
The only time a keto diet is unhealthy or dangerous is when its composed of processed fatty foods like processed meats and bars and keto snacks. You will still lose weight on them, but they are not natural foods.
In the industry we call this dirty keto. Its far superior to return to a minimally processed animal based diet with natural animal fats and healthy veggies and occasional fruit.
This naturally puts us in and out of ketosis cyclically, with ample nutrients. This is the diet I advocate in my practice, not because it helps with weight loss (although it does) but because it reverses many disease states even serious mental health conditions like psychosis and seizures. Weight loss is actually just a side effect of eating for health. Its really not the goal.

Truly - YouTube Tony Sander, 43, tells Brand New Me how a car accident led him to make some serious lifestyle changes, including addressing his issues with food and alcohol.
For Tony Sander, a packed and intense working schedule meant that he relied on an unhealthy diet to keep himself going. Over time, food, along with drinking, became a source of relief from that stress. "The food was as much of an addiction as alcohol ever was," he says in a recent episode of Brand New Me.
Then in 2016, Tony's car came off the road while he was driving home drunk. He shattered his knee in the accident, and doctors told him that at his current weight of 429 pounds, it wasn't safe to operate on him. This, he recalls, was the wake-up call he needed, and he started to make some serious lifestyle changes, starting with cutting out alcohol and changing his diet.
"My goal from the beginning was to save my life," he says. "My health was beyond a mess, so that was just self-preservation at the beginning, and then self-preservation turned into 'my health is getting better, let's get physically fit.'"
Working with his trainer Keith, Tony has now lost a staggering 210 pounds through working out and a strict diet plan, and has also found that exercise provides a healthier, more sustainable way to handle his stress and anxiety than food or alcohol.
"It's now my stress relief, going to the gym is my 90 minutes of my solace, it's my office, it's my time," he says. "The mental transformation that I've had, to be able to make the physical changes, I've had to come to terms with who I was, what my addictions were, and how I was going to fix them. The mental changes have been bigger than the physical."
The best advice he can offer to anybody who wants to start making changes to their lifestyle and lose weight: "Just start today. You don't have to wait for tomorrow, you don't have to have a great plan, there is a community out there that wants to help, there's people who have done it, and all they want to do is help other people do it."
