If you're on a mission to lose weight but don't have the time or energy for a more intense workout, walking is a great place to start. And with fitness trackers and GPS apps readily available on our phones, it's easier than ever to track your steps, time, or distance whenever you hit the pavement.
So, let's say you walk for an hour during the day: will you lose weight? One study in JAMA Internal Medicine showed that subjects who, without making changes to their diet, worked out at a rate equivalent to walking 12 miles per week for eight months saw fat loss. The authors further stated that the controls in this experiment gained weight, but that could be reversed with 30 minutes of daily walking.
Plus, exercise physiologist Tom Holland, MS, CSCS, told POPSUGAR in a previous interview that you can certainly see weight-loss results by walking just 30 minutes per day. He recommends that true beginners start with walking three to four times per week, then increase from there. But, just how effective your workout is depends on a number of factors.
"The intensity at which you walk plays a key role in helping your body burn more calories and improve your cardiorespiratory system," Denise Miklasz, an ACE-certified personal trainer at Northwestern Medicine Crystal Lake Health & Fitness Center, told POPSUGAR.

If you're walking at a casual stroll, you're probably not going to achieve the weight loss you want. One way to pick up the pace? "You could include 30- to 60-second bursts of faster walking every three to five minutes, followed by a 30-second recovery walk," Miklasz said. You can also try walking with weights or picking a route with hills to add some intervals to your workout.
"An interval-training workout will continue to burn more calories after your workout due to a physiological effect called excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, or EPOC. EPOC is sometimes referred to as the 'afterburn effect,'" Miklasz explained.
Even more important is your diet. You know this, but you can't eat whatever you want or as much as you want the second you start exercising. "In order to lose weight you need to create a calorie deficit," Miklasz said. One pound is equal to 3,500 calories, so you'd need to carve out 3,500 calories each week in order to lose one pound, which experts consider a safe and healthy goal. In other words, "you need to either burn an extra 3,500 calories or remove 3,500 calories from your diet," Miklasz explained - or a combination of the two.
"Combining exercise with a healthy diet is more effective than restricting calories alone. Exercise can help you maintain and increase lean body mass, which results in a larger calorie burn per day," Miklasz said. To that point, when you're ready to start building muscle, remember that walking alone won't cut it. She noted, "Ideally, incorporating strength training along with aerobic exercise will increase muscle mass and boost your metabolism." Mum lost five stone in a year and became super fit after the dramatic birth of her baby – MyLondon
A mum who had two surgical emergencies performed simultaneously lost five stone in a year after her ordeal inspired her to become super fit.
In agony, pregnant maths teacher Mari Wyn, 33, of Bangor, was rushed to hospital on January 6, 2018, with a ruptured appendix.
Then, after removing the damaged organ, hospital surgeons delivered baby Gwion five weeks premature, by caesarean section, feeling it was the safest option to protect the lives of both mother and child.
I was petrified on the way to the hospital and in a lot of pain, recalled Mari, whose husband, Gerallt, 33, is a construction technician.
I knew me, and my baby could be in serious danger.
Everything was such a blur. When I came to, I had no idea if I had a baby or not.
Thankfully, little Gwion had arrived safely, weighing 5lb 12oz, and soon after both mother and baby were allowed home.
Put through the mill, Mari needed three months to make a full recovery, which she mostly spent stuck on the sofa, unable to properly care for her newborn son, instead, relying on Gerallt to take look after them both.
But her recovery signalled the start of a new dawn for Mari who, in April 2018, then an unfit size 18, vowed to get into the best shape of her life, so she never missed out on a moment of her sons life again.
Mari explained: Not being able to take care of Gwion for those first few months after the operation was heartbreaking.
Ive always yo-yo dieted and never been one to exercise a lot. But those 12 weeks were a real wake up call. I was so weak I could barely bend down to pick up my son.
It made me realise that to be the best mum to Gwion when I recovered, I needed to be as fit and healthy as possible, so I never missed any moments with him again.
But losing weight meant changing the habits of a lifetime for Mari a serial yo-yo dieter, whose weight had crept up to almost 15 stone.
She said: Throughout my life Ive struggled with my weight and yo-yo dieting and Ive never been able to stick to a weight loss plan for long.
I suppose I never had enough motivation or willpower to.
At 5ft 3 and weighing 14 stone 12lbs, Mari had a body mass index (BMI) used to measure a healthy weight of 36.8, compared to the NHS recommended figure of between 18.5 and 25, meaning she was classed as obese.
But, at last, her baby had given her the motivation to slim down successfully.
Having little Gwion was all the motivation I needed to get myself as fit and healthy as possible, she said.
And, by April 2019, Mari had shrunk from 14 stone 12lb to 10 stone, reaching her goal weight.
But not content simply to maintain her slender size 10 frame, by April this year Mari had shed another half a stone and even ran her first half marathon in Cardiff in September.
This is the slimmest Ive ever been in my life, she said. I hit my goal weight a year ago and over the last year Ive lost another half a stone.
She added: Ive completely transformed my life. I never imagined Id be able to run a few miles let alone half a marathon. I feel incredible and also in the best shape to be the best mum.
Maris dramatic transformation has been thanks to following a WW eating plan and adding in exercise to her routine.
But, mostly, she credits a change in mindset for being able to maintain her weight loss one year on.
My mindset has changed forever Im never going back to the way I was, she said. I still enjoy food, and the odd treat, but now its all about balance and making healthy choices.
Mari had struggled with her weight throughout her adult life, even though she was at her heaviest in April 2018.
She recalled: When I wasnt trying to diet, I didnt have the healthiest eating habits. Before I started WW, breakfast was usually a bowl filled with sugary cereal Id eat as much as I could fit in it.
She continued: Lunch was usually some sort of meal deal where Id buy a sandwich, chocolate and a packet of crisps.
And dinner was something carby like pasta with lots of sauce and a slice of bread. And my portion sizes were too big because Id have the same sized dinner as my husband.
For pudding, I could polish off a whole bag of Maltesers or Minstrels in one sitting.
Stressful situations would also drive her to comfort eat.
If I had a stressful day at work, Id come home order a takeaway and wash it down with a bottle of wine and chocolates, she said. If I was stressed, Id snack too Id eat crisps and chocolate and never think to work out how many calories I was actually eating.
At the time, it made me feel better, but really it was just a short-term fix.
And, though she was delighted to be able to being Gwion home, she still struggled, given that she was recovering herself.
It was really tough, I was a new mum, but I could barely do anything for my son myself, she continued.
Because I wasnt able to do anything my husband took over all the cooking, and it was a lot of quick easy meals like toast, pasta or microwave meals. And because I couldnt move around much my weight started to creep up.
Her turning point came when she had Gwion and, three months into motherhood, joined her local WW class.
I wanted to get back into shape to be the best mum possible and as a kick start, I gave myself a month to lose one stone, she explained.
I joined WW and I followed the plan to a tee and within the first week Id lost 9lbs.
Swapping sugary cereal and snacks for three balanced meals a day, Mari says the weight soon fell off.
She explained: It was really easy to follow because all the meals were really tasty breakfast was usually eggs on toast, lunch was a chicken salad or chicken wrap and dinner was usually fish or meat with some healthy carbs and lots of veg.
Shedding one stone in one month, when Mari went on holiday to an all-inclusive hotel in Cyprus with her husband Gerallt and Gwion in May, she still stuck to the healthy eating plan.
She said: Usually, if I was going to an all-inclusive, Id happily eat everything I saw. Id have the attitude of, Ive already paid for this so Im going to eat it.
But by that point Id changed my mindset and I didnt think anything of reaching for the fruit and yogurt for breakfast.
For lunch Id have fruit and salads, and for dinner Id eat what I wanted, but I just make sure to have smaller portions.
And since losing weight, Mari has not looked back even adding exercise into her routine, something shed never done previously.
She said: I started jogging, which is something Id never done before in my life and I started walking two or three miles every day with the baby, so the weight just seemed to come off.
And in March 2019, just one month before she reached her goal weight, Mari ran her first ever 10km.
Exercise isnt just good for losing weight, its great for your mind too, she said. Jogging has kept me on track and helped me stay positive and motivated throughout my weight loss journey.
Then, in September, she ran the Cardiff Half Marathon.
I never believed Id ever be able to run half a marathon, she said. It was amazing experience running along to all the crowds and Gwion and Gerallt were there to cheer me on too.
Being an accomplished half a marathon runner has also helped when it comes to dashing around after her little boy.
Gwion wont sit still, hes constantly running around doing things, she said. If I hadnt lost the weight theres no way, Id be able to keep up with him.
Now Im fitter than Ive ever been, and I can be the best mum to my son. When I couldnt take care of Gwion for those few weeks it really made me think about looking after myself and my own health.
She continued: Even though Id tried to lose weight before I was never in the right mindset or didnt have enough motivation to do it. But having my son as motivation set me on the right path, because I wanted nothing more to be the best mum.
Now Im in the best shape of my life and all it took was a change of mindset, a healthy eating plan and some exercise. Im proof the WW plan really does work.
Ray Kaur a nutritionist at WW, said staying motivated can be a challenge as our brains can latch onto the idea that we are going to get an instant return for our hard work.
She explained: While its natural for our motivation levels to dip, which can mean defaulting to old habits or giving into temptations, its important to remember its not a permanent state.
Remembering your why the purpose that drives you and setting small, measurable steps will help you towards your overall goal.
Studies have shown the effect a few small changes can have on our overall wellbeing.
This could manifest itself in tweaks to our routines like experimenting with new recipes, trying an online exercise class to shake up work outs or even getting to bed a little earlier, meaning youll feel more refreshed the next day.

At 4 a.m., two men entered the American Restaurant on State Street in Niles and, at the point of a revolver, ordered the night clerk to throw open the cash register and turn over the contents to them. The young man did as he was commanded and immediately after the two men left the place, he turned in a call to the police. He was able to give a good description of the men to officers.
At 5:45 a.m., the officers found two men in the woods near McDonald and placed them under arrest. The two tallied with the description given by the clerk and they were taken before him for identification. He identified them almost instantly. The men, residents of Niles, were locked in the city jail awaiting a hearing before Mayor Crowe.
Chief Rounds was of the opinion that one of the men was connected to several other minor robberies that had been committed here.
Another man of Depot Street was being held for a hearing on a charge of having liquor in his possession.
50 years ago in 1970
Trumbull County recorded its first drowning of 1970 with the death of a 17-year-old Girard High School student at Mosquito Lake.
The young man developed a cramp while swimming and drowned in about 10 feet of water despite efforts by two companions to save him.
The young man was pronounced dead on arrival at Trumbull Memorial Hospital, and Trumbull County Coroner Dr. Joseph Sudimack Jr. ruled his death an accidental drowning.
The victim was described as a good swimmer who had called for help after swimming out into the lake about 35 feet to a friend about 15 feet from him. The friend struggled to keep the victims head above water while bringing him closer to shore.
A second friend had not gone into the water but was napping on shore. When he heard his friends thrashing in the water, he plunged in but the victim had gone under by that time as his rescuer developed a cramp in his right leg and lost his grip on the victim.
The victims body was recovered by Cortland firemen in water between 8 and 10 feet deep about 20 feet northwest of where he went under.

Although it was hard to believe anyone would want to fill out more paperwork after visiting a state license bureau, 500 people had signed petitions or had sent letters to state officials on behalf of Carolyn Evans, the soon-to-be former deputy registrar at Truck World License Bureau.
But Leo Skinner, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety, the state agency that gave the bureau contract to someone else, said Evans had no other recourse but to take the matter to court.
Only the court system can grant an appeal, he said. Evans had recently lost her bid for renewal of a three-year contract to run the bureau at Truck World she had operated for nine years.
The bureaus were privately run by state appointed deputy registrars who earned $2.25 per transaction to dispense everything from temporary license tags to motorcycle permits. The deputy registrars hired their own employees and ran the bureaus as businesses.
Applications for deputy registrar were evaluated on a point system. Evans, who had never had a mark against her business record thought she was a victim of politics.
Evans friends and co-workers at the bureau, soon-to-be out of a job, hoped the state would make a change before the appointment became permanent.
Evans said she was not part of the letter writing campaign and would not take the matter to court.
I dont expect to win, but the fact that 500 people sent letters makes me feel good, she said. If nothing else, I walk away knowing I did a good job.

Bill Germanakos knew he had to do something when he couldnt fit in a roller-coaster ride with his daughter and then couldnt get out of it.
Germanakos, who lost 164 pounds on the NBC show, the Biggest Loser in 2007, told a crowd of about 120 people at the Lincoln K-8 School that was the signal he had to lose weight.
Everything just ended for me, Germanakos said of that moment. I was toast.
Germanakos was at the Atlantic Street NE school as part of the 6th annual TMH Foundation Move to Improve wellness program. Those in attendance got to see a sample of the Jump Stretch workout and the zoomba dance workout.
The wellness ambassador for Quest Diagnostics, Germanakos shed 164 pounds, or 49.1 percent of his body weight, to win season 4 of the hit reality show.
He said the biggest thing he took from his television experience was the importance of education when trying to slim down. He said the show had a full staff of dietitians and exercise experts to teach contestants what they need to lose weight.
Im here to help the people who feel helpless, he said.
Germanakos said one of his main goals was to stay healthy enough to walk his daughters down the aisle on their wedding days.
My goals are long term, he said.

A woman was motivated to lose seven stone after an outfit she wore for her hen party made her feel like big bird".
Sarah Burke, 29, from Cork, decided to drop the stones seven years ago.
She explained: I went on a hen about seven years ago with a yellow theme and I remember thinking - Im a size 22/24; where am I going to get something yellow?
I tried on my dress and my nana was like is that a joke? I had to wear it and it actually haunts me to this day!
After losing the bulk of the weight, Sarah was delighted when she fell pregnant with her son Luke, and although others worried she may put the weight back on, she knew she was determined to stay on track, RSVP Live reports.
When I fell pregnant everyone was like you just lost the weight and now youre going to put the whole lot back on, so it did take away from it but I worked really hard during the pregnancy.
I gained two stone in the pregnancy and I lost that when he was six weeks old. I was in such fear of going back to a 22/24 there was no way I was doing it to myself. The fact that people were commenting on it as well like when you tell people youre pregnant theyre meant to say congratulations - but people were worried for me.
But Sarah didnt use her pregnancy as an excuse to throw in the towel and the birth of her son Luke only motivated her further.
Having Luke definitely motivated me. With Slimming World being self-employed its up to you how much you earn, your groups can be as small or big as you want and of course I wanted to provide Luke with as much as I could.
But Sarahs admits that self love is so much more than just reaching your target weight.
I think when people think about losing weight we all think its going to fix everything and make you much happier.
"I would have been very bubbly and outgoing before and as I lost the weight I actually became quieter. I had a lot of loose skin and things like that. So yes I feel better in myself health-wise but theres a lot of things I want to work on for myself as well.
When youre on your own with a three-year-old and they go to bed it is lonely like youre just sitting there at night, so thats when my energy goes into what Im going to do to benefit myself more than just sit there and eat crap."
This decision to lose wight would not only lead to a complete lifestyle change for Sarah but it also kick started her career as a consultants with Slimming World after her own incredible eight stone weight-loss.
My best advice to anyone starting their weight-loss journey would be that its one day at a time, and no two days are the same. Some days youll be amazing and some days you mightnt be but thats okay.
"I am driven, but some days I have to drag myself up to do it. But its a case of if I dont do it, its not going to benefit me. If I eat crap for a day I just get up the next day and treat it as nothing, otherwise itll go on and on.
You need to control the food rather than the food controlling you. So just get in control of the food and just go with every single day as best as you can - and dont give up cause giving up wont get you anywhere.
Sarah was due to tie the knot last month, and when the relationship broke down, even through all of this she is still a bundle of positivity and motivation.
I actually was due to get married last month but the relationship ended. I had surgery scheduled for the skin on my stomach and breasts but I had put it off because we wanted more kids but now that thats gone the opposite way Im going to get the surgery done.

The parents and two brothers of Silvia Deyanira Melendez, 24,areall in therapy after losing their daughter and sister to COVID-19 on March 28.
"I dont have the wordsto say howbeautiful and nice to the family she was,"her father, Marcos Melendez, said Friday.
She weighed more than 300pounds with a body mass index of 60,double the BMIconsidered obese.Thismost likely contributed heavily to her Type 2 diabetes, hypertensionand a heart condition that required open heart surgery two years ago.
The chronic conditions that increase the risk of serious illness and death ofCOVID-19 are by now well known: diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and being older than 65.Obesity is less well known or understood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention groups "severe obesity," defined as having a BMI of 40 or higher, with the other known "risk factors for serious illness" for COVID-19.
CDC data show the percentage of adultsconsidered obese increased from 30% to 42% between the 1999-2000 period and 2017-2018. Nine percent hadsevere obesity, up from 5% in1999-2000.
"Before we had COVID, we had an obesity epidemic going on in the U.S. and we've had this for some time," said Dr. Robert Fildes, a pediatric kidney physician.

The editors of the medical journal Obesity last month said coronavirus createda "dual pandemic threat" and urged health care providers to "take up the cause" of fighting obesity with their patients.
A growing number of studies and data onCOVID-19 deaths confirmthe link. The extra weight on people in the 40-plus BMI range who contract COVID-19increases the chance they will require hospitalization, most likely in the intensive care unit. It also hampers the ability of physicians to treat them, especially with ventilators, doctors say.
A study by French researchers in the journal Obesity showed a high frequency of obesity among patients admitted tointensive care with coronavirus.The severity of the disease increased along with BMI.
Along with making mechanical ventilation harder, being severely overweight can make it harder to breath, reducing the patient's own ventilation, said Dr. Kevin Kavanagh, a Kentucky physician and founder of the patient advocacy group Health Watch USA.
It also reduces the amount of oxygen per breath, so patients have less of a reserve when they get sick.
Marcos Melendez said he was heartened when his daughter seemed to be improving in the hospital, where her mother also was being treated for COVID-19. Melendez had to communicate with both of them by video chatdue toto the risks in the hospital and because he and his sons were quarantined at home.
"The coronavirus was making big damage in her lungs and after that, the virus went to her heart," Melendez said. "She was responding good with oxygen and then the virus started attacking her heart. It went the other way in a big way."

Dr. Jeanette Brown, a University of Utah Health pulmonologist who treated Melendez, said the young woman's size prevented Brown and the ICUstaff from placing her on her stomach, which is the safest position for patients with breathing tubes hooked up to ventilators. Brown did not identify the patient by name, but Marcos Melendez confirmed it was his daughter.
Placing patients in this position allows doctors to reduce the amount of oxygen needed from the ventilator by allowingpatientsto use the less-damaged part of the lungs.
When Melendez was on her stomach, her ability to take in oxygen worsened.
Sorather than spending up to 17 hours in that position, "we had to flip to her back and try not to lose the airway," Brown said. "She wasnt even able to tolerate that more a few minutes."
Silvia Deyanira Melendez died about 24 hours later when her heart failed.
"As a provider, you want to help people, but when they are severely obese, the deck is already stacked against you," Brown said.

Depending on a patient's size, an ultrasound's view is more limited because of the excess tissue. Some of the most obese patients may not even be able to have a CAT scan because the machines have weight limits, Brown said.
"Literally, if they are large enough, you lose some of the tools in your tool box," she said.
Fildes, who recently retired from his nephrology practice in Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia, worked with children who had diabetes that would turn into renal disease if they didn't comply with their dietary and glucose guidelines.
Fildes said some of his teenaged patients weighed 300 to 400 pounds and some developed high blood pressure as young as 11.
The risk of having a high BMI isso serious that Dr. Talal Munasifi said he and most other plastic surgeons won't perform an elective, cosmetic procedure on patients with BMIs of 35 or higher unless they lose weight. "Once you go over 35,the complication rate gets high," said Munasifi, also a clinical professor at MedStar Georgetown University hospital. The most likely complications are infection and delayed wound healing.

Excess fat cellscreate other problems, too. They are believed to release inflammatory signals that cause the immune system to overreact to coronavirus, creating something known as cytokine release syndome, according to new research.
Brown, who is Mexican American, said obesity and its risks are a familiar topic, personally and professionally. She'sbeen especially worried about her parents, whom she described as obese, during the pandemic because they have Type 2diabetes.
"The unfortunate thing is we tend to have many of the co-morbidities," Brown said of the Latino population.
She said her parents are eating more carefully now, especially since her father realized he was still eating bread when he had tortillas.
Marcos Melendez said a couple of his friends died recently of COVID-19, and obesity was their only risk factor. He is Peruvian-American and his wifeis from Costa Rica. Their daughter's loss has made everyone in the familyimprove their diets and exercise.
"We need to take care of it all," he said.
Since Silvia Melendez's death, the family drinksprotein shakes in the morning, doesn't drink sodasand stops eating at 6 p.m., with only water until bedtime. They are "walking and doing a lot of things" recreationally, he said.
Silvia Melendez's mother, also named Silvia, hasdiabetes and high blood pressure like her daughter. She has continued the diet she started before her hospitalization and has already lost 30 pounds.
After losing his daughter, Melendez couldn't imagine losing his wife.
"I was really scared about her, too," Melendez said. "That virus is very dangerous. It goes after the weakest thing in your body, especially if you are overweight."
