What the health? Doctor prescribes tips for wellness in his new book – The Spokesman-Review
Sun is bad for you. Everything our parents said was good is bad. Sun, milk, red meat college. Annie Hall
What Woody Allens character Alvy Singer uttered in his Academy Award-winning film is relatable since so much of what we believe is healthy has actually been deemed harmful for us. What should we consume? Are eggs essential, or are they cholesterol bombs? Does coffee help ward off ailments or cause the jitters? What activities should we engage in?
Dr. Gregory Charlop has much of it covered in his new book Why Doctors Skip Breakfast: Wellness Tips to Reverse Aging, Treat Depression, and Get a Good Nights Sleep.
Charlop, 45, an anesthesiologist and expert in wellness and nutrition, details why fasting is healthy and reveals what those with longevity have in common and what we should absolutely not skimp on in order to be at our best.
Most of us grew up with the adage that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Whats with doctors skipping breakfast?
The concept that breakfast is the most important meal of the day came from Dr. (John Harvey) Kellogg, who invented corn flakes. He was a doctor, but he was also a brilliant marketer! He made a big deal out of breakfast so people would buy his cereal 100 years ago. But modern research indicates that we dont need breakfast, especially the sugary kind of food that is often for breakfast, and that fasting is good for you in so many ways. If you can go 16 hours between meals, youll be fine.
But that means set times for meals are out the door.
If you have dinner Monday at 6 p.m., then you can have lunch at noon. I understand its not ideal for everyone since some people like to eat with colleagues in the morning or families have a dinner at 6 p.m. every night.
Considering how on the go, pre-coronavirus, everyone was, its more feasible since busy families tend to be running everywhere.
Thats true, but its not so much about when you eat. My dad loves breakfast, but thats his big meal of the day. If you fast for much of the rest of the day, youre good.
So fasting is better for your body than say the paleo diet?
Yes. And people who fast lose weight easier. Youre consuming less calories. If you eat less and exercise more, youll have more energy. Regarding paleo, one of the reasons people do the paleo diet is to increase their ketone levels. A high level of ketones are good for your brain. Instead of going paleo, you can drink ketones. You can order ketone esters on Amazon.
Will fasting prolong your life?
Every indication indicates that fasting will give you a longer life span.
You have 7-year-old twins. Would you recommend that children, who are obviously developing, fast?
Children should not be fasting. Children are one of two groups who shouldnt fast. The other group is professional athletes who need to consume.
Were you a typical child when it came to nutrition?
No. I remember being at a birthday party when I was 9 at a skating rink. I refused to eat the birthday cake. I knew that I already had too much sugar. My parents couldnt believe this! I didnt like sugar! When I was 10, I got into a debate with my school principal about artificial sweeteners. I told him it was like eating poison.
What do we know now about aging that we didnt know in the past?
Thanks to groundbreaking research from Harvard and USC, we understand what causes us to age and how we can reverse aging. My book tells you what foods, medicine and lab tests you need to take to look and feel great. What we thought was that the body gradually decays. We were right about certain things, such as smoking definitely shortens your time. But in terms of aging, there are certain factors. There are zombie cells. You develop those as you get older. You have more of those because of your diet, but you can get rid of those with the right supplements. Another important factor is telomeres, which are structures at the end of a chromosome. Shorter telomeres are markers for old cells. You can do things to prevent the shortening telomeres, and you can lengthen them.
What can we do to lengthen them?
Meditation can lengthen them. I discovered that the common denominator between many successful people and those who live a long life is they meditate. Its very good for the mind and body.
There are two schools of thought on sleep. Theres the notion that seven to eight hours a night is necessary. And then there are those who insist that as little sleep as possible is what drives them. I have a friend who boasts about how much he accomplishes by sleeping four hours a night, but it sounds like hes killing himself slowly. Proper rest seems essential. What should we do about sleep?
You hit the nail on the head regarding sleep. It is critical for people to get enough sleep. We all need seven to eight hours a night. People who wear lack of sleep as a badge of honor are fooling themselves. Getting enough sleep isnt just important for humans but also for animals.
Aside from the obvious, what are the negative effects of lack of sleep?
Sleep deprivation increases the risk of dementia, Alzheimers and cancer. Sleep deprivation also ages a person and causes depression. Your friend is slowly killing himself.
How harmful is soda consumption?
Soda is pretty poisonous. If you have just one can of soda a day, it increases your risk of death. Thats so for regular and diet soda.
Diet soda is full of chemicals, which obviously are bad for you. Whats another reason to avoid diet pop?
The artificial sweetener causes your brain to crave sugar. You might drink a diet soda and shortly thereafter have an overwhelming desire to eat a pie. Artificial sweeteners and sugar cause obesity.
Sparkling water is a good substitute for soda, which takes us to what can we drink during a 16-hour fast.
You can certainly drink sparkling water, chamomile tea and coffee. Black coffee is very good for you.
Thats interesting since coffee was like the egg since years ago the question was if caffeinated coffee was harmful.
Black coffee is very healthy. Coffee reduces the chances of getting Parkinsons disease and certain types of cancers. It decreases the risk of auto-immune deficiency.
What else should we add to our diet?
Herbs and spices, such as turmeric, oregano and garlic. Add it to your food. It adds flavor and is so good for your body. Also, olive oil is very good for you. So get enough sleep, fast, and enjoy moderate exercise.
So does that mean that extreme exercise, such as running a marathon, is bad for us?
Running a marathon doesnt lengthen our lives. It shortens our life. Our ancestors didnt run marathons. There was a reason for that.
How do we deal with depression?
Ketamine with good diet and lifestyle choices are the ways to deal with depression. Oral antidepressants arent very effective.
So we can alter the course of our lives.
You control your own destiny. If you alter what you do, you can change your mind and body for the better.

What is the endomorph diet? Losing weight based on body type – TODAY
Thousands of books and generalized diet programs have been designed to help people lose weight, and yet, the obesity and preventable chronic disease rates continue to rise. If current projections become a reality, almost half of us will be obese by 2030, according to a study led by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. What if the perfect diet was less about the food involved and more about the individual? The endomorph diet is one option that breaks down your daily dose of meals based on your body type. Though the concepts behind the diet lack strong data, its making a comeback in the ever-changing world of weight-loss remedies.
In the 1940s, researcher and psychologist William Herbert Sheldon defined three body types (ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph) that could be assigned to an individual. The last body type, endomorph, was defined as a body that was shorter in stature with larger bone structure. Sheldon defined endomorphs as round and soft. The endomorph structure was commonly associated with a slower metabolism and a propensity to hold onto fat over muscle. Sheldon explained that this made the endomorph more likely to struggle with weight loss. His work was initially embraced (he even identified personalities to each body type) but was later deemed controversial.
Trending stories, celebrity news and all the best of TODAY.
The diet focuses on defining the right mix of macronutrients rather than restricting calories. People following the diet should derive 30% of their calories from carbohydrates, 35% from protein and 35% from fats. Theyre also encouraged to focus on fiber-rich foods, healthy fats and an avoidance of sugar and refined carbohydrates. However, recommendations on specific foods and eating frequency are not defined.
Mascha Davis, a registered dietitian, founder of Nomadista Nutrition and author of the newly released book "Eat Your Vitamins," thinks that the breakdown of macronutrients in the endomorph diet could be effective for individuals struggling to lose weight since the plan focuses on increasing fiber and protein. She cautions, however, that the diet still makes a lot of generalizations, and therefore, its not an approach she would recommend to her clients. There are other ways to create a more personalized eating plan. Davis prefers an individualized assessment and nutrigenomics test, which assesses genes related to diet, weight, cardiac health and fitness. She believes this method yields more personalized results. Finally, in addition to not being customized enough, Davis suggests that the endomorph diet ignores a lot of other factors like genetics, blood work, personal history, stress and sleep.
The data linking dietary behaviors, success in weight loss, metabolism and body type is limited. Only a few studies citing the potential characteristics of an endomorph body type exist. Further, the lack of personalization inherent in the diet is a concern. Ashley Koff, a registered dietitian and the CEO of the Better Nutrition Program, says that the premise of "slow metabolism," or the struggle to gain muscle or lose weight, can be grouped together as a "symptom" or "condition" for which there is a singular approach defies what we know about the human body. She goes on to say that a focus on macronutrients alone without digestive health and micronutrient intake and further looking at lifestyle choices belongs in the 1980s, not 2020.
Based on previous research on lower carbohydrate approaches, the diet may be beneficial for certain individuals who are more prone to carrying excess fat in the belly region, and thus, more prone to insulin sensitivity. But taking the macronutrient breakdown and translating it into a dietary plan means working with a practitioner who can assess your total nutrition intake within the context of your current health, medical history and lifestyle choices. Koff says that science alone won't tell us what is better for humans. It can give insights that practitioners can then use to personalize recommendations. She recommends a digestive assessment as a first good step and states that no results can be gained without better digestion, regardless of body type.
Weight loss depends on many things. Both Davis and Koff agree that the long-term success and sustainability of this diet for individuals is questionable. Your environment, gut health, disease status and even who you socialize with can impact your ability to lose weight and keep it off. The endomorph diet is similar to paleo without limitations on legumes, grains and dairy. So, altering paleo plans to include more high-fiber complex carbohydrates, non-starchy vegetables, healthy fats and limited red meat may be a good starting place.
In the end, the perfect diet is most likely the one you can successfully stay on long term. Living longer and better may be more impactful than getting back into your skinny jeans.

Repurposed drug helps obese mice lose weight, improve metabolic function – National Institutes of Health
News Release
Thursday, May 14, 2020
Treatment with disulfiram, normally prescribed to treat alcohol use disorder, shows health benefits in animal study.
An off-label experiment in mice using disulfiram, which has been used to treat alcohol use disorder for more than 50 years, consistently normalized body weight and reversed metabolic damage in obese middle-aged mice of both sexes. The international study was led by researchers at the National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health . The results were published online in the journal Cell Metabolism on May 14.
The scientific team studied groups of 9-month-old lab mice who had been fed a high-fat diet for 12 weeks. As expected, this diet made the mice overweight and they started to show signs of pre-diabetes-like metabolic problems, such as insulin resistance and elevated fasting blood sugar levels. Next, the scientists divided these mice into four groups to be fed four different diets for an additional 12 weeks: a standard diet alone, a high-fat diet alone, a high-fat diet with a low amount of disulfiram, or a high-fat diet with a higher amount of disulfiram. As expected, the mice who stayed on the high-fat diet alone continued to gain weight and show metabolic problems. Mice who switched to standard diet alone gradually saw their body weight, fat composition and blood sugar levels return to normal.
The mice in the remaining two groups, with either a low or high dose of disulfiram added to their still-fatty food, showed a dramatic decrease in their weight and related metabolic damage. Mice on the high disulfiram dose lost as much as 40% of their body weight in just four weeks, effectively normalizing their weight to that of obese mice who were switched back to standard diet. Mice in either disulfiram dose diet group became leaner and showed significant improvement in blood glucose levels on par with the mice who were returned to standard diet. Disulfiram treatment, which has few harmful side effects in humans, also appeared to protect the pancreas and liver from damage caused by pre-diabetic type metabolic changes and fat build up usually caused by eating a high-fat diet.
The NIA scientists, Michel Bernier, Ph.D., and Rafael de Cabo, Ph.D., collaborate frequently with researchers at NIH and beyond on studies into how changes in dietary patterns like intermittent fasting could lead to cognitive and physical health benefits. They first became interested in disulfiram after reading about the benefits this class of drug has shown in treating type 2 diabetes in rats, coupled with the growing interest in repurposing drugs that may also improve healthy aging.
When we first went down this path, we did not know what to expect, but once we started to see data showing dramatic weight loss and leaner body mass in the mice, we turned to each other and couldnt quite believe our eyes, Bernier said.
According to studys research team, the key to the positive results seem to stem from disulfirams anti-inflammatory properties, which helped the mice avoid imbalances in fasting glucose and protected them from the damage of fatty diet and weight gain while improving metabolic efficiency. Both groups of obese mice (control and disulfiram) were not subjected to any form of exercise, nor did they demonstrate noticeable spontaneous behavioral changes. Based on the evidence they observed, the researchers believe the beneficial results of disulfiram stem solely from the drug. They did not observe any negative side effects from disulfiram in the mice.
The research team stresses that these results are based on animal studies, and they cannot be extrapolated to any potential benefits for human at this point. It is recommended that disulfiram not be used off-label for weight management outside of the context of clinical trials. Still, given the findings, they are planning future steps for studying disulfirams potential, including a controlled clinical study to test if it could help individuals with morbid obesity lose weight, as well as deeper investigation into the drugs molecular mechanisms and potential for combining with other therapeutic interventions.
The research was supported by NIA through its intramural research program, NIA grants AG031782 and AG038072, in collaboration with colleagues from the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, Yale University, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, and University of Sydney, Australia.
This press release describes a basic research finding. Basic research increases our understanding of human behavior and biology, which is foundational to advancing new and better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat disease. Science is an unpredictable and incremental process each research advance builds on past discoveries, often in unexpected ways. Most clinical advances would not be possible without the knowledge of fundamental basic research.

Want to lose weight? 2-3 cups of coffee linked to lower body fat in women – Times Now

London: This news may make coffee-lover men depressed a bit as new research has revealed that women who drink two or three cups of coffee a day have been found to have lower total body and abdominal fat than those who drink less.
The study indicated that some compounds in coffee may have anti-obesity properties.
Overall, the average total body fat percentage was 2.8 per cent lower among women of all ages who drank two or three cups of coffee per day and the findings were consistent whether the coffee consumed was caffeinated or decaffeinated, and among smokers/non-smokers and those suffering from chronic diseases when compared to those in good health.
In men, the relationship was less significant, although men aged 20-44 who drank two or three cups per day had 1.3 per cent less total fat and 1.8 per cent less trunk fat than those who did not consume coffee, according to the study published in The Journal of Nutrition.
"Our research suggests that there may be bioactive compounds in coffee other than caffeine that regulate weight and which could potentially be used as anti-obesity compounds," said Dr Lee Smith, senior study author from Anglia Ruskin University in the UK.
To reach this conclusion, researchers examined data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, organised by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in the US, and looked at the relationship between cups of coffee drunk per day, and both total body fat percentage and abdominal or 'trunk' fat (adiposity).
They found that women aged 20-44 who drank two or three cups of coffee per day had the lowest levels of adiposity, 3.4 per cent lower than people who did not consume coffee.
Among women aged between 45-69, those who drank four or more cups had an adiposity percentage 4.1 per cent lower.
"It could be that coffee, or its effective ingredients, could be integrated into a healthy diet strategy to reduce the burden of chronic conditions related to the obesity epidemic," said Smith, adding that it is important to interpret the findings of this study in light of its limitations.
Coffee naturally contains a variety of compounds including caffeine, antioxidants and diterpenes. These contribute not only to the unique flavour but also to the well-researched physiological effects of coffee.

Valerie Bertinelli recalls being fat-shamed by her fifth-grade teacher: ‘I became really aware of my body’ – Home – WSFX
Valerie Bertinelli was eager for a change before turning 60.
The actress, who celebrated her birthday on April 23, normally focuses on shedding some pounds, a decades-long challenge she has endured. But this year was different.
Gaining weight, losing weight, gaining weight, losing weight Id never dealt with any of the emotions, Bertinelli told People magazine on Thursday.
The former One Day at a Time star, who is now the host of Valeries Home Cooking on the Food Network, revealed she has always struggled with self-acceptance even as a child.
I was always trying to be better. Thinner. Nicer. Prettier, said Bertinelli. I remember my fifth-grade teacher patted me on the belly and said, You might want to keep an eye on that. That was the first time I became really aware of my body.

VALERIE BERTINELLI RECALLS POSING IN A BIKINI AFTER WEIGHT LOSS: THERES A LOT A PRIDE AND A LOT OF SHAME
My mom had me these green hot pants with a bib, she recalled. I was wearing green tights and a turtleneck. I thought I was stylin. Now I think: how dare he? At that age were so full of joy and then to have someone slap you for nothing. For just standing there. Now I can be angry for that little girl. It feels like so much time wasted. I dont want anyone else to waste any time.
Bertinelli told the outlet that it would take years, even after achieving fame on television, to learn that lesson. Even during her teen years on One Day at a Time, she said: I was made to feel like I could lose a few, like, lets see if we can get you into a smaller size.
These days, Bertinelli said shes trying to let go of the scale.
I dont weigh myself as much anymore, she said. Ill put on some jeans every once in a while to see how they feel. Why do I have to know what number I am? I know its really about the internal work.
Bertinelli said that watching women like Lizzo, Ashley Graham and Nabela Noor on social media have inspired her.

It would have been nice to have had women like that when I was growing up, to look up to, she explained. It doesnt freakin matter what size they are. They glow from within. Thank God for them.
As for Graham, 32, Bertinelli remarked: She is stunningly beautiful. Im like why is she a plus-size model. Shes a model and shes stunning.
The star hopes that her personal journey will inspire other women to create their own paths toward self-acceptance.
If I can help somebody be kind to themselves, hopefully, that will help me be kind to myself too. And my hope is I can connect with someone who needs to hear my story.

Theres a lot of pride and a lot of shame associated with that cover, said Bertinelli. I worked really, really, really hard. Physically, definitely. I wish to God I had worked just as hard on my mental shape. But when I dont work on whats eating me, Im going to start eating.
According to Bertinelli, 11 years later she was determined to do the mental and emotional work associated with her complicated relationship with food.
I wanted to lose 10 [more] pounds for my 60th birthday and then it became much more than that, she explained. It became, Id like to lose the weight, but I may never lose the weight. How do I love me for who I am right now? Today. At this body. At this age.
That means you have to do the internal work, Bertinelli continued. Ive been really good at covering it up and eating through it. Its just Id like to be good at something else now.

Bertinelli hopes her story will encourage others to not struggle with the scale, but rather learn to embrace their body at any size.
So many kind people have reached out to me, and said, I feel that way too, said Bertinelli. Its overwhelming. It would be a gift to connect with people and hopefully have them feel good about themselves. Treating each other with kindness starts with ourselves.
As for that famous green string bikini, Bertinelli told the outlet she still has it. The swimsuit is tucked away in a closet drawer.
The funny thing is, the green bikini was a size large, she said. Even at the lowest weight Ive been in decades, I was still wearing a large. Everybodys shape is what we should be celebrating.

Adele’s Weight Loss and the Obsession Over Her Body Highlights Fatphobia – Showbiz Cheat Sheet
People who see the latest picture of Adele out of context might not even recognize her. The Rolling in the Deep singer is tiny. She revealed her new look in an Instagram post, although fans already had some hints that she was looking slimmer.
Adele attended Drakes birthday party in October and was photographed there. The photos definitely showed that shed lost weight, although it wasnt clear how much until her new post. She posted the picture to celebrate her birthday, and the internet exploded.
Celebrities immediately began commenting on Adeles new photo. All of Adeles famous friends were happy for her and congratulated her on her weight loss. Chrissy Teigen, who has famously struggled with weight herself, was shocked. She commented I mean are you kidding me, on the birthday post.
Teigen forgot to add a birthday message to her comment, but other celebs didnt. Rita Wilson congratulated Adele, calling her gorgeous after wishing her a happy birthday. Jameela Jamil, Lil Nas X, and Questlove also commented on the post and wished Adele well.
Its not just Teigen who forgot to add a nice happy birthday to their comment. Other celebrity commenters were too shocked to remember the happy birthday message. The Ellenshows Kalen Allen just said: THAT WAIST IS SNATCHEDDDDDD!!!!
Adele was never bothered too much by her weight. Sure, she wanted to fit into off the rack clothes. But she didnt start dieting to get thinner. She was actually worried about damaging her voice with her unhealthy eating habits. Shes had issues with her vocal cords in the past, and the incident scared her. So she got a new personal trainer and started the Sirtfood diet.
The diet cuts out processed foods, as do most healthy menus. But this diet goes a few steps further. Sirtuin activators are found in a lot of foods, most of them green, and theyre known to suppress the appetite. The Sirtfood diet focuses on foods with the most sirtuin activators.
That means a lot of kale, green tea, and buckwheat. Red wine and cheese are also allowed, but not in the beginning. During the first week of the diet, practitioners can only consume 1,000 calories a day. Adele survived on mostly green juice at the beginning of the diet, but it paid off. She feels healthier and has more stamina.
Many of Adeles celebrity fans might say the diet paid off because Adele is now thinner. But Adele didnt lose the weight for her looks, she did it for her health. The focus on her new look has a lot of fans upset over fatphobia.
Adele was always gorgeous. She has a singular look that goes with her singular voice. So some fans were upset at what they see as an attempt to change that look, which was always beautiful. Theyre also upset at media outlets and commenters calling Adeles new look gorgeous because it seems like it invalidates how beautiful she was before.
Plus, some people are treating this as if its Adeles biggest accomplishment. The woman has more than a dozen Grammy awards, so her weight being the most important thing about her is kind of insulting to some fans.
Adele hasnt spoken up about her weight loss, but her personal trainer has. He says the important thing for fans to remember is that Adele didnt lose the weight to be skinnier. She never intended to make fans feel bad by taking away a plus-sized icon. She only wanted to be healthy, and have enough stamina to continue with her demanding career, especially now that she has the added stress of motherhood.
In fact, according to her personal trainer, her son is one of the reasons Adele came to him for help. According to her trainer, Adeles weight loss journey was about getting her healthy. Especially post pregnancy and post surgery.
