Have you heard of the Zone diet? Heres all you need to know – The Indian Express

Among numerous other diet fads is one that advises eating meals with a specific ratio of protein, carbohydrates and fat, or what is known as the Zone diet.

The Zone diet is not new; it was developed almost three decades ago by biochemist Barry Sears, who published his book The Zone in 1995.

Sears is known to have developed this diet after losing family members to early deaths from heart attacks, says Healthline in an article. He went on to develop a diet to reduce inflammation in the bodya cause of heart attack and strokes. Inflammation also leads to weight gain, while the Zone diet claims to help lose fat at the fastest rate possible, besides preventing spikes in insulin release and maintaining insulin sensitivity.

Research, however, suggests a lack of scientific support for the connections made between diet, enocrinology and metabolism. In fact, a review of the literature suggests that there are scientific contradictions in the Zone Diet hypothesis that cast unquestionable doubt on its potential efficacy, notes a 2003 study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

The ratio for the Zone diet is as follows: 40 per cent carbohydrates with low glycaemic index, 30 per cent protein and 30 per cent monounsaturated fat. It is designed to be followed for a lifetime and not just in specific phases.

As per the diet, one should eat five times a day, with three meals and two snacks, with no more than five hours of gap between meals.

The hand plays an important role in this diet, whereby the size and thickness of the palm are used to measure protein while two big fists measure favourable carbohydrates and one fist unfavourable carbohydrates.

In a new book The Mediterranean Zone, Sears shows similarites in the foods consumed as part of the Zone and Mediterranean diets. This includes fish, chicken, tofu, soy porducts, egg whites, low-fat cheese, low-fat milk and yogurt for protein, and avocado, nuts, peanut butter and oils like sesame oil or olive oil for fats. Carbs include fruits such as berries, apples, oranges and plums, vegetables like spinach, tomato, mushroom and chickpea, and grains like oatmeal and barley.

High-sugar foods, processed foods, carbonated drinks should be avoided. Tea and coffee consumption should be kept to a minimum.

Fame came very early for Sophie Turner. In effect, the filming of GOT started when she was only 15 years old. This celebrity early the has affected many mentally and physically :

I was a victim of mental illness. My metabolism has suddenly decided to fall into the depths of the ocean and I started to become uneven and to take the weight, and all this would happen to me in front of the camera.

Today, she has found comfort and support from the singer Joe Jonas whose career exploded with the Jonas Brothers :

Today, I love myself, or in any case, more than before. Im with someone that makes me understand that I have the qualities. And when someone tells you that he loves you every day, it helps you to love yourself a little more.

In the columns of the magazine Extraher husband , Joe Jonas had been very touched by the progress of his wife, Sophie Turner, and declared :

This is huge. I think the best thing about this is that she can now encourage other young people living similar experiences and to be a voice that they can listen to it Im proud of it.

All this reminds us that no one is in the shelter of the dictates and especially not the stars. To this, we would like to give the example of Miss France In 2019, Vaimalama Chaves, who has not hesitated to send his haters on the roses.

In all cases, the future seems to smile to Sophie Turner since most of his marriage, and his success in Game of Thrones, it will be also cast in the highly anticipated X-Men : Dark Phoenix which will be released on June 5, 2019 in the dark rooms :

It is important to feel good in her skin, regardless of its weight, and to avoid the gaze of the other. Come in and discuss it in our forums and more especially in our section on self-Confidence, accept.

Husband and wife married for 24 years support each other to slim – and lose nearly 16 stone – Stoke-on-Trent Live

Married couple Di and Carl Meakin have lost 15 stone 11lbs between them and now enjoy running and cycling.

The couple, from Biddulph, have been married for 24 years and have been supporting each other at Slimming World.

Di, aged 55, topped the scales at 15st 9lbs in March 2016 and now weighs 8st 2lbs a loss of 7st 7lbs. She has maintained her weight loss for two years. Fifty-two-year-old Carls heaviest weight was 23st. He is now 14st 10lbs a loss of 8st 4lbs.

Di said: One of my reasons for joining was to be able to do more things with my granddaughter, Scarlett. Before, the only things I could do were colouring and puzzles.

"Now I jog alongside her while she rides her bike and I can fit on all the slides with her!

It was tough the first couple of weeks with getting my head around everything. You can eat so much and still lose weight. It isnt a diet plan, its a lifestyle change.

Di was a size 22-24 when she started. She previously worked in Sainsburys cafe and Wetherspoons and explained that after a long shift she would be in horrendous pain and her feet would ache.

Di said: I didnt really do much exercise at the start. I was always on my feet with work but I didnt do anything else. But then I gradually started to do a bit of walking. Id walk so far and then Carl would pick me up.

I built up my distance to about 10 miles and then I decided to start running and actually did the Potters Arf last year.

Perhaps the biggest improvement for Di was her mental wellbeing. She said: I struggled with my mental health. There was a period of nine months when I barely left the house. I only left a couple of times to go shopping with Carl but most of the time I said no.

Now Di loves socialising and being around her loved ones.

She added: Before I would always make excuses to not go out with friends but now I always say yes. I love going out to buy clothes because I know that whatever I buy will fit. Ive had such lovely comments from friends. They say my weight loss has taken years off me.

As a consultant, Di is able to support her own members as they lose weight. She added: Its very emotional and amazing to see people doing so well with their journey. It means a lot to me that I am helping people.

I think my top tip for anyone wanting to start their journey is to write everything down. Food diaries can be really useful especially if you are struggling to lose.

Carl turned 50 in 2018 and also had a knee operation and wanted to make some positive changes to his lifestyle.

After seeing Dis success, he decided to follow the Slimming World plan.

He said: I followed a lot of the plan from home but then about a month ago I finally joined.

I was always a typical bloke and said I didnt want or need to go to group. Then I finally went and within 10 minutes I was chatting away to everyone and really relaxed it was like I was with my mates just having a chat.

"You start to get to know people and they can share tips with you and pass things around that they have found to be useful in their journeys. We are all proud of each other.

Carl lost more than 8st following the plan and says it has been a massive journey. He added: I think the biggest change is that I dont wake up with everything aching anymore. I started to get more dog walks in to get my steps up and went on lots of bike rides. Theres some great areas around Biddulph and you can literally ride on the train tracks.

Carl loves that he can still eat a lot of his favorite foods following Slimming World including burger and chips.

Carl explained: Ill make my own burgers from scratch and they taste just the same as if you ordered it - maybe better. You can add cheese, gherkins, fried egg, those kinds of things and its the same. You dont have to miss out.

Di is a Slimming World consultant at Biddulph High School on Wednesdays. During the lockdown, she is doing groups on Zoom. Visit her Facebook page for details.

A B.C. municipality is getting rid of these bizarre old zoning laws – Vancouver Is Awesome

When Coquitlam introduced its first zoning bylaw in 1947 it was 12 pages long.

Fast-forward 73 years and the document has grown to fill an entire binder as the number of regulations for how properties can be used and developed has ballooned. Many of the rules are obsolete today but are still on the books, prompting a staff review of the citys commercial zone with an eye toward reducing some of the unnecessary red tape.

These are the types of regulations that have cropped up over time as we have amended the zoning bylaw over the last 70 years and they have piled on top of each other to create the series of regulations we have today, said Andrew Merrill, Coquitlams manager of community planning.

We are looking at trying to clear away some of that to have a crisp, clean and clear zoning bylaw that makes sense to our applicants and also for our staff to administer.

One example Merrill highlights as a regulation the city could probably stand to get off its books deals with reducing salons.

These businesses, where people would place a vibrating leather strap around their stomach in an effort to lose weight, fell out of fashion years ago, but are still regulated under the citys zoning bylaw.

The CS2 zone specifically calls out a 100-year-old form of weight loss that nobody does anymore as something that is critical for our zone to regulate and control, Merrill said.

The obsolete regulations can sound funny, but they do have an impact on how businesses are run in Coquitlam.

Gas stations, for example, are extremely limited in the types of products they can sell besides gas, which is why there are so few attached convenience stores or fast-food restaurants at service stations in Coquitlam, Merrill said. (They are allowed to sell artificial Presto fire logs, according to the zoning bylaw, he notes).

Another regulation states that a business can only conduct music lessons if it also sells music supplies and instruments.

Because if you teach music without doing that, the world will collapse, Merrill said sarcastically.

According to a staff report, the commercial zoning regulations are overly specific and very restrictive. By consolidating some of the similar uses into general categories, the city hopes to make its regulations more flexible, the document states.

Consultation with the business community began in February and March and bylaw amendments are expected to be before council for first reading later in the spring.

Adele’s former trainer speaks out over ‘fat-phobic accusations’ over her weight loss – Today.com

Adele's former trainer is speaking out about "fat-phobic accusations" after the singer showed off her weight loss in a photo celebrating her 32nd birthday on Wednesday.

Pete Geracimo, who said he used to train the "Hello" singer in London, called the "negative commentary" questioning why Adele decided to lose weight "disheartening."

"She let her incredible voice do the talking, or should I say singing! She never once pretended to be something that she wasnt. What you saw was what you got. And we all LOVED it!" Geracimo wrote on Instagram.

Trending stories, celebrity news and all the best of TODAY.

The singer hasn't commented on her weight loss and the stir it has created. Many fans left comments telling her she looked fantastic, while others questioned why the singer felt she needed to lose weight.

"When Adele and I started our journey together, it was never about getting super skinny," Geracimo said. "It was about getting her healthy. Especially post pregnancy and post surgery."

Adele has a son, Angelo, with her ex-husband Simon Konecki.

Geracimo said helped Adele get ready for a 13-month tour to support her album "25," which was released in November 2015. That's when he said Adele started to make some changes.

"In that time, she warmed to training and made better food choices. As a result, she lost considerable weight and people took notice. Her body transformation was splashed across every media outlet," he said. "The attention it generated was mind-blowing."

He said he "could not be prouder or happier" to see Adele smiling and achieving her goals.

"She did not lose the weight to make others feel bad about themselves. This personal transformation has nothing to do with me or you. Its about Adele and how she wants to live her life," he said. "She has not changed from the Adele we grew up with and have loved."

Long Island town told to go on a diet but residents say ‘fat chance’ – New York Post

Uncle Sam wants you to lose weight.

Lawmakers in the Long Island town of Huntington rolled out a shocking new initiative on Wednesday to combat citizens weight gain during the coronavirus lockdown. Officials insist the voluntary program will help Huntington residents stay fit and sane throughout quarantine.

But the very suggestion that they should start working on their post-lockdown beach body went over about as well as youd expect with residents like Joanne Meyers.

The Huntington native calls the town-wide diet ridiculous. The 52-year-old paralegal adds that she didnt quite believe that the government would try to institute a fat camp.

I thought, Its not a gimmick? Its real?

Town officials say yes, the recommendations are real but they deny the new program is anything like a fat camp.

Were not limiting anyones soft-drink size, Legislator William Spencer tells The Post, calling to mind the triggering New York City soda ban.

Spencer says he gained about 10 pounds himself since entering quarantine, and as a physician, he worries about the connection between COVID-19 and weight.

One of the trends that we saw among the people who were being intubated and having trouble recovering were comorbidities like diabetes, asthma and obesity, says Spencer, the chair of the local Legislatures Health Committee and the chief of otolaryngology at Huntington Hospital.

He adds that Suffolk County has been a hotspot for COVID-19, and the area has 35,275 confirmed cases.

Spencer tapped his colleague Dr. David Buchin, who heads up bariatric surgery at the hospital, to put together a diet plan to rein in snacking in Huntington.

But Meyers isnt biting. My weight loss is my own business, she says, although she cops to gaining the so-called Quarantine 15.

Im working from home, and its getting ridiculous, says Meyers, who set up an office in her kitchen and says its led to unwanted mini-meals. My clothes dont fit anymore. Ive been wearing sweatpants and yoga pants, and its not cute.

Meyers decided about a week ago to take up the low carb, high-fat keto diet Its worked for me in the past, she says but adds that part of her weight gain is due to the stressed and depressed times, brought about by the pandemic. Food can be very comforting, she says.

Buchin hopes to cover stress-eating in his Facebook Live events, which start on May 11. There, people like Meyers will be able ask questions about shedding pounds in real time.

Ill be giving advice on how to control emotional eating and how to avoid comfort foods and high carbohydrate-rich foods, says Buchin in a press conference on Wednesday enlisting locals for the fight against the battle of the bulge.

Bunchin will also be offering virtual counseling and nutritional advice including healthy grocery lists through his website where clients can sign up to track their diet progress, too. Free exercise classes on Zoom through Intelligent Fitness, of East Northport, and Blue Lotus Center for Yoga and the Arts, of Huntington, will also be available to Huntington residents.

Spencer says hes even working to get gym equipment delivered to constituents.

There are some gym owners who are saying, If you want to maintain your membership, Ill deliver an elliptical to your house and I can coach you via Zoom, says Spencer, whos quick to deny that the healthy lifestyle guide is a mandate. Ive had a few people who have called up asking if the town is putting us on a diet, but I explain to them its just resources.

He wont be intercepting any pizza deliveries, either. Food provides comfort, and I dont want to take that away from people.

Meyers plans to stick to grilled chicken, salmon, and spinach omelettes to get her body back in fighting shape, and thinks politicians should stick to bigger issues than ballooning waistlines.

I would think there are better or more important things they should be doing, she says.

Weight loss: Eat this healthy snack daily to lose weight – Express

Weight loss can be an uphill struggle for many people. With many diets to choose from, people often dont know which would suit them. Snacking is one of the huge problems people face when trying to lose weight and an expert has revealed how eating this one snack regularly can help with the weight loss journey.

Almonds contain lots of healthy fats, fibre, protein, magnesium and vitamin E.

The health benefits of almonds include lower blood sugar levels, reduced blood sugar and lower cholesterol levels.

They can also reduce hunger and promote weight loss.

Speaking to theExpress.co.ukDr Deborah Lee, Dr Fox Online said: Many people remain unaware that eating nuts regularly has health benefits and can help them lose weight.

READ MORE:Adele shocks with incredible weight loss in new picture - how the star lost over 8st

She explains that during a 2014 study, a group of 108 women who were overweight or obese were studied closely.

They were divided into two groups and both groups were asked to follow a calorie controlled diet for three months.

One group was also asked to eat 50g almonds per day, Dr Deborah Lee explained.

After the study, both groups had lost weight. However, weight loss was significantly greater in the almond-eating group compared to the non-nut eaters.

The average weight loss in the almond group was 3.68 Kg compared 1.27 Kg in the non-nut group.

The group who ate almonds also showed significantly lower cholesterol, just one health benefit of eating almonds.

Dr Deborah Lee explains how nuts are high in protein and fibre.

She said: They help you feel fuller for longer. It has been suggested they may lead to an increase in your resting expenditure (thermogenesis) although this has not been proven.

A lot of people tend to avoid snacking on nuts as they are high in calories.

However Dr Deborah Lee states that eating a handful of nuts every day is a healthy snack which can aid weight loss.

Healthline suggests that because of the high amount of fibre found in almonds and all nuts in general, they keep you fuller for longer.

Both protein and fibre are known to increase feelings of fullness. This can help you eat fewer calories which in turn, will help aid weight loss.

In order to lose weight your diet needs to be in a calorie deficit. This means your body is burning more calories than you are consuming.

The NHS recommends losing around one to two pounds a week but everyones body is different and everyone has a different metabolism and weight loss can differ from person to person.

Nuts, including almonds contain several nutrients that your body struggles to break down and digest.

A portion of almonds does not count towards your five a day due to their high fat content.

However, according to BBC Good Food, a healthy portion would appear to be around 20g-50g a day for adults incorporated into a balanced diet.

Your body does not absorb ten to 15 percent of the calories in nuts. Due to their satiating properties, nuts are a great addition to an effective weight loss diet.

The benefits of eating almonds help stretch much further than weight loss but incorporated into a healthy diet plan can help achieve results.

Do you believe these three myths about weight loss? – The Star Online

By the time this movement control order (MCO) is entirely lifted, most people would likely weigh heavier.

Despite being physically active, our fitness routines may not be as intense as before and were probably burning fewer calories these days.

Heeding our Prime Ministers call to treat the MCO as an extended sit-at-home vacation also makes it difficult to resist the temptation to comfort-eat as the kitchen is just a few steps away.

The stress of being worried whether we or our loved ones will come down with Covid-19, job security, finances, and basically, what lies ahead, may lead to elevated cortisol levels that stimulate your appetite, causing you to forage for food in the fridge.

Do remember that cortisol not only promotes weight gain, but it can also affect where you put on the weight.

Many Malaysians seem to be cooking up a storm staying home, judging from their social media posts and thanks to YouTube videos.

Im fortunate to have a personal chef (my mother!) who dishes out nothing but the best at every meal.

For the past six weeks, shes also been baking consistently for the grandkids with me being the delivery driver.

As there are only two of us in the house, the neighbours are also beneficiaries of her sumptuous delights.

One neighbour commented that shed have to go on a diet if my mother fed her in this manner daily.

Im sure there will soon be tons of people looking for diet solutions after this vacation is over.

As many probably know, there is no shortcut to shedding the excess weight and keeping it off forever.

Here are three weight loss myths to take note of if you plan to embark on that journey.

Myth: One diet serves all

A healthy diet doesnt mean you have to stick to eating organic foods or vegetables only. Filepic

We are all built differently and come in all shapes and sizes.

Likewise, there is no single diet that works for everyone.

Your body type, hormones, genes, biological factors, environment, diet etc, all play a role in how quickly you lose weight.

Very rarely do you hear of people saying they tried one diet, and voila, they achieved their dream body.

Most of the time, people would have tried more than one diet plan before they find success.

Just because your friend swears by the intermittent fasting diet, doesnt mean that this diet is right for you.

There is no magic formula; some of us just lose or gain weight quicker than others.

I can have one episode of diarrhoea and shed one to two kilogrammes in a week.

Then itll take me months to put it back on again.

A fellow journalist claims that she can take a slice of cheesecake and put on a half a kilo!

Experiment and see what works for you, or seek advice from a healthcare professional.

Myth: Eat less and exercise more

Resistance, or strength, training helps you lose weight faster, in addition to cardio exercises. Filepic

In theory, this is true because to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume.

If what goes in is more than what comes out, then the excess has to be stored somewhere.

However, just eating salads and drinking protein shakes is not the answer.

Neither is eating purely healthy, organic foods or depriving yourself of desserts.

You need to strike a balance between healthy eating, regular exercise (not weekends only) and proper sleep.

Stop counting the calories and focus on the quality of food youre eating take small bites every few hours, instead of having only two meals, but binging during them.

Snack on nuts, fresh fruits and carrots.

Avoid highly processed food with lots of sugar, but once in a while, go ahead and have that banana fritter youve been craving for.

Your weight loss exercise regimen must include both cardiorespiratory (aerobic) and strength/resistance training.

Aerobic activity such as brisk walking, running or cycling helps increase the number of calories you burn a day, but it doesnt do much to help with muscle tone and strength.

After some time, your body will hit a plateau and you will no longer shed the excess kilos this is completely normal and utterly frustrating.

Thats one reason why you hear cardio bunnies complaining that their fat loss levels have stalled, despite ramping up their efforts.

As you get stronger, so should your workouts, and just because youre breaking a sweat, doesnt mean that youre working as intensely as you should be.

Incorporate some interval training into your plan, e.g. walk for three minutes and jog for one, then repeat the cycle a few times.

The benefits of strength training are plentiful it tones and sculpts muscles, trims fat and builds strong bones.

A good resistance workout increases your post-exercise oxygen consumption, which means your body continues to burn calories and keeps your metabolism active, even while resting.

And you must get adequate sleep because this is when your body rests and regenerates.

You might think that the more hours youre awake, the more calories youre burning, but thats not true.

In fact, people who dont sleep enough at night risk gaining extra kilos.

The longer you stay awake, the greater the chance youll have a craving for an extra snack or two, as the body needs energy to stay awake.

And the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism, so not sleeping enough could be affecting how effectively your body burns calories.

If youre sabotaging your sleep, youll actually end up with more fat than muscles, despite all the resistance training.

Myth: Fitness trackers help you shed weight

Sleep is important for your body to rest and regenerate. TNS

The market is saturated with fitness trackers to track your daily steps, sleep patterns and basic health indicators.

You might be a slave to these initially, but as the novelty wears off, you will lose interest in caring about your fitness patterns.

In a 2016 study published by the Journal of American Medical Association, researchers followed 470 people who were trying to lose weight, for two years.

Subjects were split into groups and asked to either follow a low-calorie diet, increase their physical activity and attend group counselling; or to follow the same regimen, but add wearable technology six months in.

Those who were using wearables lost 7.7lb (3.5kg) on average, but the people who werent using them lost an average of 13lb (5.9kg).

It was puzzling why fitness trackers didnt help subjects lose more weight.

Study author John Jakicic and his team from the University of Pittsburgh, United States, said it was possible that when those wearing fitness trackers saw their physical activity throughout the day, they felt a false sense of security.

Assuming they had met their daily goals, they probably ate more.

On the other hand, the team also suggested that wearables may not have been encouraging for those in the study as they were already struggling to lose weight and didnt like physical activity.

So think twice about getting yourself a fitness tracker, unless youre motivated enough to follow through until your goals are met.
